I noticed an issue with the patch.
Currently the list looks as

...
ε. test.
στ. test.
ζ. test.
...

That is, there is a longer space between the Greek number and the text, for
certain numbers. With Greek small letters, this appears for the 'στ' number.
With capital letters, this appears more often, without a discernible pattern.

(Compiled on LibreOffice 3.3)

piduca: We all want to have this issue fixed. It is very important to be civil
and not appear condescending. I believe this was due to linguistic/cultural
differences.

mba: This issue looks like one that should be examined by the release team in
order to figure out when to tackle (for which OOo release). Can you please give
a pointer to the mailing list where we can ask to have this issue considered for
a future release?

In addition, is it possible to give some high level instructions for an
ambitious developer who would try to give it a go and modify the code
themselves? This developer should be able to compile OOo; is there a rough guide
on which files need changing?

Would it make sense to have a Remove formatting... option, that would open a
window listing the types of formatting that have been applied, and offers
something like

Formating
[X] Hyperlink
[ ] Bold

[Cancel] [Remove All] [Remove Selected]

In this way it would be more general, and help apply to other formatting cases.

What can the community do to help with this issue in a more active way?

There have been several similar cases in other FOSS projects as well (for
example, in Firefox) where bugs have been bugging us for years.

If we were to get a contributor/developer to work on this, what would they have
to do? On which part of the code tree would they need to look?

Just to get an idea what 32-bit or 64-bit size paragraphs can give you:

32-bit size strings/paragraphs amount to about 16 million characters.
The Encyclopaedia Britannica has 32 volumes and 44 million words, amounting to
about 1.4 million words per volume. If we assume that each word is about 10
letters (actually it is less), then a volume of Britannica fits well into a
32-bit size string (about 14 million letters) and we have over 2 million
characters to spare.

Therefore, a 32-bit size string can fit in a volume of Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Considering that the OOo API strings are 32-bit, it would make sense to go for
32-bit.

Guys, we have to put this in perspective.
My point was that 32-bit is just enough for a new limit for the size of a single
paragraph. I feel that 32-bit size for a single paragraph is fine.

If we try to push for 64-bit, my very good guess is that this issue will get
stalled and not resolved in the near future.

Since the OOo API for strings uses 32-bit numbers for the size, it appears
easier to get 32-bit paragraph sizes.

In typesetting terms, it looks like a fringe case to demand from a desktop text
editor to handle a single paragraph that consists of more than a volume of the
Encyclopaedia Britannica.

It looks like a better strategy to focus on getting 32-bit paragraph sizes,
because the next option (still 16-bit size but just complain when going over the
limit) may not be ideal for the examples shown above.

If the string size is 32-bit and you use strings to represent paragraphs, then
in order to go to 64-bit paragraph size you need to make too many changes in the
program logic, check for regressions, etc, which does not appear to happen.

It would make sense to go for 64-bit sizes when the basic data types of OOo are
of 64-bit. This might happen in the next years, which would be a more
appropriate time to ask for 64-bit paragraphs as well.

To get OOo to edit XML documents (as in DocBook), the user interface should be
able to
1. switch the styles to that of DocBook XML, and allow only those styles in the
document
2. it should highlight / provide visual notifications where the document does
not validate.

I believe the idea is to have Calc understand and consider equivalent the
traditional operators and their new Unicode counterparts.

Why this is useful?
1. There are new keyboard maps that cover more parts of the Unicode standard.
2. A user may paste a table from a Web page that uses the more elegant new
Unicode characters.

I suppose at this stage Calc should show the traditional operators, is that
correct?

Suitable FLOSS Greek fonts include
* FreeSans (Sans Serif)
* FreeMono (Mono)
* MgOpen Moderna (Sans Serif)
* MgOpen Canonica (Serif)
* Gentium (Serif, but does not have bold yet).
* DejaVu (All)

Linux distributions such as Ubuntu come with FreeFont (that is, FreeSans) and
MgOpen. This is included in the first CD which is great. Currently FreeSans is
more ubiquitus in the Linux distributions while MgOpen is catching up. DejaVu is
also getting there.

Our preference list looks like
Sans Serif fonts with Greek: FreeSans, MgOpen Moderna, Dejavu Sans Serif
Mono fonts with Greek: FreeMono, Dejavu Mono

Kostas (pkst), could you please have a look with these fonts, if the order
matches their aesthetic result?

I verify this problem with OOo 2.0.1.

I then saved the document as ODT (OpenDocument) and quickly managed to fixed the
layout to match the original screenshot. It worked really well.

I then saved as .doc and tried to view with MSOffice (roundtrip).
The layout was in a worse situation from what OOo was in earlier. That is, the
roundtrip appears not to work.

Is this an issue with MS withholding the details of the Office document formats?

My short term solution with these issues is to save as ODT (OpenDocument) and
manually fix the layout. Then, keep the documents as ODT.

Could you please attach a short test file (.DBF) that uses the CP737 encoding?
This would help to test any solutions.

If you can create such a DBF file now, it would be good to add fields with the
Greek alphabet in capitals, so that it helps non-Greek developers.

Thank you!

OpenOffice.org appears to be freezing because it is trying to download the
needed images from the Internet.

When you paste the HTML page to OOo, the images that firefox already downloaded
are not included. Actually, it would be interested to make OOo reuse the
downloaded images from Firefox.. :)

Therefore, you have to wait for a bit until after the images are downloaded. To
have an idea when OOo is downloading images, use a tool like TCPView
(http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/TcpView.html), if you use Windows.
Another support issue for OOo would be so show on the status bar that it is
downloading images, and which image it is trying to download.

Also, if you use a Proxy server to get access to the Internet, you have to tell
OOo (in the Options) about it. The default for OOo is to use the system setting
for the proxy server.

You mention that key navigation on OOo for this document makes the software
freeze. I did not manage to replicate this issue. I think you tried to use the
arrow keys in the Manauvers table, to go up and down. Between each row there
is an invisible row, so when you press the down arrow key nothing happens (the
caret becomes invisible), then you press again and it appears. This is because
the blinking horizontal bar went into the invisible row.

A tip to better use Firefox with these tasks: You can Ctrl-Click on specific
elements on an HTML page to select the pieces you want. For example, the
Maneuvers table is the most important, so you can select just that and paste in
OOo :)

To summarise, Reporter, try the above tips and tell us if OOo still hangs on
you.

Thanks for the feedback.

Verify that you do not have any specific proxy server settings on your Web
browser.
That's in Firefox, under Tools/Options/General/Connection.
If you have Direct Connection there, then the problem is somewhere else.

Do you have a personal firewall enabled?
What we need to exclude is that something is blocking OpenOffice.org from
connecting to the Internet.
If you have a personal firewall, you can add OpenOffice.org Writer to the list
of allowed applications, or disable momentarily the personal firewall.

Also, please report which exact version of OOo 2.0 you have.
This appears in Help/About. Once you get the dialog box showing, keep Ctrl
pressed while you type S, then D, then T. At this point it will show you which
exact version of OOo you have running.

You use m3, milestone 3.
The current milestone is 143, so there is some development since then.
To exclude any potential system configuration issues, could you please try a
milestone 143-something?

Pavel Janik compiles these milestones and makes them available at
ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/680/SRC680_m145/Build-1/
Could you please grab a version from there and try it out?

I do not know why the internal version number is so hidden.. :(

Is this issue the reason for bug
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57426 ?

Summary: On a default Linux installation, there are limited fonts with Greek
glyphs. Among those are FreeFonts and MgOpen. In addition, certain Asian fonts
have Greek glyphs but are not suitable for Modern Greek as they are full width
(big spacing between characters), and ommit vowels with accents.
PROBLEM: When we open a file with Greek text and the font is missing, those
Asian fonts are chosen. We have no way of avoiding those Asian fonts through VCL
(through our attempts).

In a default installation of OpenOffice.org, when you write in Greek (for
example, in Writer), the default font chosen is an Asian full-width font.

This Asian font
1. has Greek characters due to a Japanese/Korean standard requiring them.
2. however it is full width (spacing is to big for western languages)
3. however it lacks characters with accents (they do not appear on screen)

Free/open-source fonts with Greek characters are
1. FreeFonts (FreeSans, FreeSerif, FreeMono), available by default with most
Linux distributions
2. MgOpen fonts (MgOpen Canonica, MgOpen Moderna, MgOpen Cosmetica, MgOpen
Modata), available by default in Ubuntu Linux. Fonts found at
http://www.ellak.gr/fonts/mgopen/

a
href=http://util.openoffice.org/source/browse/util/officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/VCL.xcu;VCL.xcu
/a does not have a section for Greek.
Adding such a section and including Greek fonts appears to solve the problem.

However, when you choose from the font menu a font to display greek text, and
this font does not have greek characters, OOo falls back to the Asian font.

According to the last comment at a
href=http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16746;bug 16746/a,

Greek characters have been treated wrong in the past (as CTL chars) see also
issue 30465. This will finally work in OO.o 1.1.3 (not yet available).
Considering issue as fixed.

I am not sure if there is a regression here.

I have created a custom VCL.xcu which includes a greek font (FreeSans) in every
field for the en and el sections. When I choose a font that does not have
Greek for some Greek text, the Asia font is chosen.

Description of screenshot
=

I am using the latest Build of OOo, as provided by Pavel, at
ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/680/SRC680_m137/Build-1/OOo_SRC680_m137_LinuxIntel_install_el_deb.tar.gz
The behaviour is similar to the English build. For example, I get the same
behaviour with Ubuntu 5.10.

a. Lines 1, 2
Here you can notice that characters are missing; there are characters that have
accents on them. The Asian font chosen here conforms to a Japanese/Korean
standard that requires Greek characters, however apparently it does not require
greek characters with accents. There was a discussion on this at the fontconfig
mailing list (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/fontconfig/) in September
(due to some issue, archiving of the list stops at August).

b. Lines 3-6 (default font) and 7-10 (FreeSans)
In line 3, the asian font is used for all characters apart from Omega
In line 4, some letters are shown with the asian font.
In line 5, all but pi (π) is shown with the asian font.
In line 6, all but one character is even shown.

In lines 7-10 you can see the correct display of the Greek text corresponding to
3-6.

Relevant bugs:

1. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4639
Fontconfig (font configuration in Linux distributions and more) had a bad
preference list for the display of fonts, giving priority to Asian fonts.
This has been fixed. My system has a patched version of the configuration file,
with a fixed preference order.

2. https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2374
The same bug noted in Ubuntu. There is a long discussion with more details.
Unfortunatelly it does appear to fix the problem.

To sum up, the issue here is that when OOo tries to display Greek and the
currently selected font does not have Greek characters, a fallback to an Asian
font takes place which is inappropriate for Modern Greek. I have no idea how to
influence this internal behaviour; this appears to be the core of the problem.

It is possible to get OOo to choose Greek fonts by adding a section for Greek
(el) to VCL.xcu. This would fix the issue when the end-user uses the Greek
locale. However, when the default locale is other than Greek, (such as English,
en), and the font does not have Greek characters, the problem appears. This is
a common occurence for different configurations that end-users have.

In fontconfig, we placed free (open-source) fonts with Greek characters higher
than the CJK fonts (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4639) which
solves the problem.
How can this be achieved in OOo?

Jean-François, could you please provide a screenshot using the test file
attached with the following issue?
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57426

The direct link to the test file is
http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/31219/DefaultGreekFont-OOo2Build1-Pavel.odt

I am trying to see how the text looks when the text is lowercase.
Also, it shows the representation of the full alphabet.

When saving an HTML document that has Greek in it, the produced file has Greek
as HTML entities (such as Alpha;) instead of the Unicode/UTF-8 values.

The problem exists in the Windows builds only; on Linux the produced file is in
UTF-8.

The problem appears to be the encoding chosen for the output file;
windows-1252 is chosen instead of UTF-8 which is the correct.
Actually, the 8-bit Greek encoding is windows-1253, not windows-1252.

What I would see as the proper solution is to simply set the encoding to UTF-8,
and I believe the issue will be solved automatically.

Created an attachment (id=31121)
Saving an HTML file with Greek on OOo/WinXP. The wrong encoding (windows-1252)
is used, instead of UTF-8, producing HTML entities for Greek.

I just noticed this option in the HTML compatibility section.
Changing the setting to an appropriate encoding that contains Greek characters
solves the problem.

On my system the default setting was windows-1252.
Should the default setting be UTF-8?

I use the Greek version of OOo 2.0 Build 1 (31Oct05).

The same bug exists for Mozilla/Linux, see
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69230

GNOME works with secondary layout, see URL above for pointers.
