[sw-issues] [Issue 91143] Greek Character Numbering style in Bullets and Numbering

Currently the list looks as ... ε. test. στ. test. ζ. test. ... That is, there is a longer space between the Greek number and the text, for certain numbers. With Greek small letters, this appears for the 'στ' number. With capital letters, this appears more often, without a discernible pattern. It is very important to be civil and not appear condescending. I believe this was due to linguistic/cultural differences. mba: This issue looks like one that should be examined by the release team in order to figure out when to tackle (for which OOo release). Can you please give a pointer to the mailing list where we can ask to have this issue considered for a future release? In addition, is it possible to give some high level instructions for an ambitious developer who would try to give it a go and modify the code themselves? This developer should be able to compile OOo; is there a rough guide on which files need changing? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 17171] Paragraph cannot be longer than 65534 characters
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=17171 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Nov 8 12:50:56 + 2007 --- Just to get an idea what 32-bit or 64-bit size paragraphs can give you: 32-bit size strings/paragraphs amount to about 16 million characters. The Encyclopaedia Britannica has 32 volumes and 44 million words, amounting to about 1.4 million words per volume. If we assume that each word is about 10 letters (actually it is less), then a volume of Britannica fits well into a 32-bit size string (about 14 million letters) and we have over 2 million characters to spare. Therefore, a 32-bit size string can fit in a volume of Encyclopaedia Britannica. Considering that the OOo API strings are 32-bit, it would make sense to go for 32-bit. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=17171 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Nov 8 16:56:24 + 2007 --- Guys, we have to put this in perspective. My point was that 32-bit is just enough for a new limit for the size of a single paragraph. I feel that 32-bit size for a single paragraph is fine. If we try to push for 64-bit, my very good guess is that this issue will get stalled and not resolved in the near future. Since the OOo API for strings uses 32-bit numbers for the size, it appears easier to get 32-bit paragraph sizes. In typesetting terms, it looks like a fringe case to demand from a desktop text editor to handle a single paragraph that consists of more than a volume of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. It looks like a better strategy to focus on getting 32-bit paragraph sizes, because the next option (still 16-bit size but just complain when going over the limit) may not be ideal for the examples shown above. If the string size is 32-bit and you use strings to represent paragraphs, then in order to go to 64-bit paragraph size you need to make too many changes in the program logic, check for regressions, etc, which does not appear to happen. It would make sense to go for 64-bit sizes when the basic data types of OOo are of 64-bit. This might happen in the next years, which would be a more appropriate time to ask for 64-bit paragraphs as well. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 59151] Pasting from firefox caus es writer to lock up
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=59151 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Dec 10 09:09:59 -0800 2005 --- OpenOffice.org appears to be freezing because it is trying to download the needed images from the Internet. When you paste the HTML page to OOo, the images that firefox already downloaded are not included. Actually, it would be interested to make OOo reuse the downloaded images from Firefox.. :) Therefore, you have to wait for a bit until after the images are downloaded. To have an idea when OOo is downloading images, use a tool like TCPView (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/TcpView.html), if you use Windows. Another support issue for OOo would be so show on the status bar that it is downloading images, and which image it is trying to download. Also, if you use a Proxy server to get access to the Internet, you have to tell OOo (in the Options) about it. The default for OOo is to use the system setting for the proxy server. You mention that key navigation on OOo for this document makes the software freeze. I did not manage to replicate this issue. I think you tried to use the arrow keys in the Manauvers table, to go up and down. Between each row there is an invisible row, so when you press the down arrow key nothing happens (the caret becomes invisible), then you press again and it appears. This is because the blinking horizontal bar went into the invisible row. A tip to better use Firefox with these tasks: You can Ctrl-Click on specific elements on an HTML page to select the pieces you want. For example, the Maneuvers table is the most important, so you can select just that and paste in OOo :) To summarise, Reporter, try the above tips and tell us if OOo still hangs on you. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [l10n-issues] [Issue 57426] New - Wrong default font f or Greek, full width Asian font is chosen

This Asian font 1. has Greek characters due to a Japanese/Korean standard requiring them. 2. however it is full width (spacing is to big for western languages) 3. however it lacks characters with accents (they do not appear on screen) Free/open-source fonts with Greek characters are 1. FreeFonts (FreeSans, FreeSerif, FreeMono), available by default with most Linux distributions 2. MgOpen fonts (MgOpen Canonica, MgOpen Moderna, MgOpen Cosmetica, MgOpen Modata), available by default in Ubuntu Linux. Fonts found at http://www.ellak.gr/fonts/mgopen/ a href=http://util.openoffice.org/source/browse/util/officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/VCL.xcu;VCL.xcu /a does not have a section for Greek. Adding such a section and including Greek fonts appears to solve the problem. However, when you choose from the font menu a font to display greek text, and this font does not have greek characters, OOo falls back to the Asian font. According to the last comment at a href=http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16746;bug 16746/a, Greek characters have been treated wrong in the past (as CTL chars) see also issue 30465. This will finally work in OO.o 1.1.3 (not yet available). Considering issue as fixed. I am not sure if there is a regression here. I have created a custom VCL.xcu which includes a greek font (FreeSans) in every field for the en and el sections. When I choose a font that does not have Greek for some Greek text, the Asia font is chosen. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. For example, I get the same behaviour with Ubuntu 5.10. a. Lines 1, 2 Here you can notice that characters are missing; there are characters that have accents on them. The Asian font chosen here conforms to a Japanese/Korean standard that requires Greek characters, however apparently it does not require greek characters with accents. There was a discussion on this at the fontconfig mailing list (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/fontconfig/) in September (due to some issue, archiving of the list stops at August). b. Lines 3-6 (default font) and 7-10 (FreeSans) In line 3, the asian font is used for all characters apart from Omega In line 4, some letters are shown with the asian font. In line 5, all but pi (π) is shown with the asian font. In line 6, all but one character is even shown. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57426 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Nov 6 10:16:25 -0800 2005 --- To sum up, the issue here is that when OOo tries to display Greek and the currently selected font does not have Greek characters, a fallback to an Asian font takes place which is inappropriate for Modern Greek. I have no idea how to influence this internal behaviour; this appears to be the core of the problem. It is possible to get OOo to choose Greek fonts by adding a section for Greek (el) to VCL.xcu. This would fix the issue when the end-user uses the Greek locale. However, when the default locale is other than Greek, (such as English, en), and the font does not have Greek characters, the problem appears. This is a common occurence for different configurations that end-users have. In fontconfig, we placed free (open-source) fonts with Greek characters higher than the CJK fonts (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4639) which solves the problem.
