The attitude is not new to me, I know the method you are talking about. There are users who don't know their problem good enough to actually propose what should have been done. These user vote with their feet and is the 96% silent consumers referred to marketing people. And there are who knows what they are dealing and promptly ask for their needs. Or, the 4% smart customers. Respond-development model make product lean towards 4% smart customers. The typical OSS community attitude is not to approach users who don't subscribe mailing-list and rather try different product instead of asking the question the smart way, rather instead, try convert these users to participate community and abandon those who cannot. I usually like the OSS community approach because since my ego told me I am the smartest person in the world, I should only like to talk with smart guys:) No, I don't mean that:) What I really mean is we should weight the opinion of the people who don't talk instead of getting them here. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Yet attentions obtained on their side for the issue is much less than OOO because scribus have a narrower audience of industrial users compare to OOO having a broader audience of consumer market. Thus it's reasonable I expect this OOO feature request being fixed ahead of that scribus bug report. ... Now with 3.1 I still suffer from this issue. Since a workflow form is involved, the slowness could kill its application, in my case my user would complain why we don't make web application out of it, which 'ruin' the convenience bought by xform because this feature is designed so that we don't have to build and re-build web application for every form. What needs to be done to confirm it? I see it everyday. As a user not knowing to much technical stuff here, I wonder what can I do to make it as confirmd, can I proove it with a video camera clip show people suffer from this problem? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 95900] UTF-8 is not in selectble character encoding list during importing/expor ting DIF formats
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=95900 --- Additional comments from zhangwe...@openoffice.org Wed Jul 22 04:50:00 + 2009 --- Hi thanks for your comment. The issue started from a practical (not in theory xxx should) requirement: because we ourselves are using Linux on all office stuff, and some people choose to use gnumeric for gnome/lightness and some choose to use oocalc, then we find we have to exchange spreadsheets by using xls format which we prefer to stay away from. The requirement for most spreadsheet is not high, just row/column and data type correct would be enough, thus I think of DIF, then again failed for Chinese ideographs contained in. nowadays it is difficult to tell of something is ASCII or not thanks to multiple extension to ascii. The only difference exist is multi-byte or single-byte charset. below quoted from wikipedia: DIF stores everything in an ASCII text file to mitigate many cross-platform issues back in the days of its creation. However modern spreadsheet software, e.g. OpenOffice.org Calc and Gnumeric, offer more character encoding to export/import. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. If you use so few other features of OOO I would recommend you migrating away from OOO and use opensource Abiword instead. Abiword has their own problem too, nothing is perfect, but it at least provides a dialog display word count AND the dialog is alive, you can keep it open when you are authoring. I think abiword's shortage on multi-column layout and footnotes are not important to you. I'd perfer writing with left half of my screen and keep the word count dialog on the right half of the screen. It's good to hear you complain because then ooo people is more aware the competition exists in opensource world too (abiword/ooo). In general I think OOO did a good job, but this bug I think belongs to the papercut category https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts thus should be heard. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. However not because I can replace the UI font, but because the default font-config is smart enough to use a Chinese font when Chinese ideograph is displayed. Changing UI font is still not working for me. Exact steps: 1) option | fonts | Apply Replacement Table checked; 2) option | fonts | set to replace Andale Sans UI with AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni and check the check icon after it to put it to replacement table, make sure both Always And Screen are selected. 3) save options. 4) restart openoffice writer. [sc-issues] [Issue 51345] CSV only first line withou t text delimiter

This requirement of using different delimiter seems is only reasonable if there needs to be a way to separate table header with content, e.g. for tables that have multiple rows of table header, and such case is rare yet confusing, and certainly should not be done if only Turbolister needs it. Instead ask this question on the forum and someone will give a solution using command line (awk for example) or macro, then other users can refer to that solution page instead. My 2cents as an old OOO user. would be glad requirement team come up close this. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. In my projects I often find users who were supposed to manipulate data exported from other systems are often confused with multiple options provided by CSV, e.g. text delimiter, field delimiter. gnumeric recognizes .tsv format and opens without asking user a single question like the text delimiter (because there is none, tab-separated-values do not distinguish text and digits) or field delimiter. This gives advantage for system implementors like me to provide user with TSV format with the confidence user will ask less questions to support team or mess up data by answered wrongly about text delimiter. I think OOO should do alike. Furthermore although TSV format did not specify what is the EOL, I recommend always default to CRLF (despite OS difference) for two reasons: 1) more application accepts CRLF than CR or LF; 2) it provide the convenience that non-Windows users can process the TSV file with text tools like AWK, using CRLF as record separator would let them accept table cells that contain linebreak in either CR or LF. It's not necessary to add TSV available in Sheet from File function because those who use that function is probably aware of the delimiter concepts. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 95958] export CVS: either provide user option for record delimiter or default t o CRLF
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=95958 Issue #|95958 Summary|export CVS: either provide user option for record deli |miter or default to CRLF Component|Spreadsheet Version|OOo 3.0 Platform|Unknown URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|save-export Assigned to|spreadsheet Reported by|zhangweiwu --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Nov 7 12:46:02 + 2008 --- According to RFC 4180 CRLF is the record delimiter for CSV format (there is no second option to use only LF). This is based on the well understanding of more number of current application that takes CSV can accept CRLF then those support CR or LF. Current text delimiter seems to be based on the OS's default. A Linux user may wish to prepare a CSV file for a Windows user who happen to use a program that only accept CSV file line-separated with CRLF. In such situation the user is stuck. He have to use posix command tr but he probably isn't able to or prefer not to use commandline. A second reason to use CRLF for record separator is it gives user possibility to work with data with line-based software, e.g. awk. One awk user can easily set RS (record separator) to CRLF and not worrying about logics to handle table cells containing linefeed (a cell can safely contain either CR or LF but not together). Since the user is actually using awk, he is more likely using Linux or MacOS, which defaults to CR or LF for EOL (but not both), then this user is going to enjoy the CRLF as record separator. Request: either provide user option for record delimiter (always have CRLF selected by default) or always use CRLF for export CSV files. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. This is not enough for a lot of business situations. First: that's not enough: e.g. a company may have an Info field for Project Code, Project Name, Security Clasisification and Status (e.g. if should be archived or not), quickly used up all 4 fields. Adding an revision and Partner (which company also involved in using or creating this document) is not possible. Second: there is space. On my installation OOO3.0 on Linux/PowerPC, the space is available for up to 6 fields. On the other hand in Microsoft Word there are unlimited fields for customized key-value pair as document property. This is confusing especially to first time Fields users. They don't understand why User Data is Sender data, especially if the document is not supposed to be send to anybody at all (I don't send it, so who is the Sender?) I propose to change Sender field-section to User Data. In fact it is better to change both to User Profile because Data is a too general term. User would ask What is my Data? My Data includes my documents and presentations and gets confused when his/her data is only his contact information. They don't get confused when the see a form of contact information which named User Data, but they get confused if they find their contact information during inserting fields of User Data. Generally any data are User Data, this is really not good wording. It pisses the user off if the user himself is a professional editor, which picks on incorrect wording, and which is one of most important user of OOO because their use of OOO shows the product capability. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. What should user fill in First Name if their surname in their culture is placed before their given name? Further the UI for entering user profile data (Option dialog) should be re-organized in this way: +-+--+ |Surname: | Country: _| |Givenname: | Organization: _| | | | Instead of +-+ |Organization: | |First Name/ Last Name / Initial: _ / _ / ___ | | | The purpose of this is to de-emphasize the order of different parts of the name. If we only replace Surname with Last Name, Given Name with First Name, a Japanese, for example, still feel uncomfortable when he sees his Given Name is placed before his Sur Name in the same line. He will not feel uncomfortable if they are in two different lines (so no order issue). This is probably the only way acceptable to cultures with different name orders. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. It seems to because ooo doesn't understand my locale de_DE.utf8. The same (doesn't work) for de_DE.UTF-8. If openoffice start in en_US.UTF-8 the Chinese filenames are displayed correctly in File Open Window. I guess de_DE.utf8 is not in the list of recognized locales for OOO (when built without gtk/qt). Thanks and I am sure I filed duplicated bug (only I don't know how to find the original bug) so sorry if it again took your QA staff time to mark this duplicate. One suggestions: Please add the word CJK, Chinese, Korean, Unicode, font to this issue's description or subject, because they seems to be the keyword the bug reporters use to search before they submit a duplicated bug. Just curious, is there a cross-platform layout engine that can be plugged in to any word processing / layout application to do the things like text justification, calculating space between ideograph? As far as I know this is a problem that a lot other software meets (OOO, LaTex, Scribus, Abiword, Kword, Ted, a2ps, firefox, thunderbird, etc etc) and does it make sense to use a cross-platform library for this? e.g. some text layout issue are very hard to solve (proper vertical top-to-bottom right-to-left layout I used to use in Outlook Express emails when I write email with history scholars). MS seems to be able to solve this problem on a wider scale, e.g. I can make webpages in top-bottom right-left layout with IE and use this layout for writing emails, this is an impossible in all OSS email/browser software I used. Did MS use some cross-product library for their own use? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Yesterday I received email notification from Sun introducing good news that a lot of features are there, check again, no SVG. I suffer because now I can hardly get high resolution diagram printed. I can only use low-resolution png and my diagram happen to be hard to convert to odg (external importer failed). I really don't need all these fancy 3D chart stuff and I am definitely not going to upgrade to 2.3. Suddenly I got a feeling like several years ago crying for png transparency support in IE. I know Sun provided OOO for free and we should be thankful, but I got a mixed feeling. I have waited years and years and read every release note, I subscribe OOO release notification only to wait for the day to come. I tried to change user interface font by subsituting Andale Sans UI to a Chinese font, after subsitution the user interface look exactly the same (bad). This is either a OOO bug or a document bug, or this is more like a document bug. I know Acrobat need an extra package to display Chinese character but such packages are not required if you use one of the font I recommened (I tried both on English-only adobe reader and looks fine!) I recommend ShanHeiSun http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software_2fCJKUnifonts and Ming http://www.info.gov.hk/digital21/eng/hkscs/hkscs_iso.html. Both are free to use. Ming is governmental font from HongKong, the other one is something like GPL. Both fonts I used many years with OpenOffice (and also fine with PDF export) The advantage of the two fonts are for their coverage. They conver really a lot of Chinese characters, the top coverage Chinese fonts that can be obtained for free. The problem with character coverage is that, when you found some Chinese character is missing in one font, it is usually too late (difficult to change the whole document and also past documents' font). So better choose wisely in the begning. I used to use other fonts (like arphicfonts) and now I fall back to only use the two (Mostly I use UniFont/ShangHeiSun, sometimes I use Ming). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 58813] New - text align justifica tion fails with CJK (Chinese Japanese and Kore an) text
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=58813 Issue #:|58813 Summary:|text align justification fails with CJK (Chinese |Japanese and Korean) text Component:|Drawing Version:|OOo 2.0 Platform:|All URL:|http://bossdog.realss.com/SME_IT_guide.pdf OS/Version:|All Status:|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard:| Keywords:| Resolution:| Issue type:|DEFECT Priority:|P3 Subcomponent:|formatting Assigned to:|wg Reported by:|zhangweiwu --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Dec 3 01:09:58 -0800 2005 --- In OOO2 drawing align justification simply doesn't work for CJK text. It's too simple to describe. I am 150% sure I am reporting a repeated bug, someone must have reported already (too easy to observe) only that I tried many ways and cannot find the issue, so I just report it here in case I am so lucky to be the first one find this worth a report. to reproduce: 1) type Chinese ideographs in any text container (take a text box) 2) type ideographs but not puncuations untill you hit the end of this line and bought to the next line, 3) at the begining of second line, type a Chinese puncuation, just use period. This is used to pull last ideograph down from the first line because Chinese puncuations cannot be placed in the begining of a line; 4) type untill you fill up the second line as well. 5) make sure you are using justified align, and you will notice the ending of the two lines are not aligned to the right (although the begining of the two lines aligns at the left side). See example in action: http://bossdog.realss.com/SME_IT_guide.pdf (everything in this doc is made in OODraw and all text are aligned justified, see the right ending of each line does not align) The font used in that file (if you wish to reproduce the issues) is here: http://www.info.gov.hk/digital21/eng/hkscs/hkscs_iso.html Okay, now someone kindly associate my report to the original report please, and don't forget to tell me what keyword did you use to find that original report. [sw-issues] [Issue 58110] cannot select dawing obje ct in front of a picture which anchored as cha racter
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=58110 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Nov 19 04:05:22 -0800 2005 --- sorry for looking stupid: you said in this case, then what's the alternative? E.g. how can I select this rectangle not by clicking? This is important because I have a very long document (some 200 pages) and for some unknown reasons all of the pictures in this file are buggy. Thus I am wasting a lot of time by first remove the picture then select the draw object, after modification take the picture back. also, does what you said mean that this bug is arranged to be killed in the future? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 58110] New - cannot select dawing object in front of a picture which anchored a s character
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=58110 Issue #:|58110 Summary:|cannot select dawing object in front of a picture |which anchored as character Component:|Word processor Version:|OOo 2.0 Platform:|All URL:| OS/Version:|All Status:|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard:| Keywords:| Resolution:| Issue type:|DEFECT Priority:|P3 Subcomponent:|formatting Assigned to:|mru Reported by:|zhangweiwu --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Nov 18 05:07:12 -0800 2005 --- it is very straigthforward. Yet strange to find the reason because it happens randomly, sometimes it happens after document saved and re-opend. But one thing for sure, once one picture begin to behave buggy, it will keep behave buggy forever. So it's pretty easy to catch the bug just by opening the document I attached. to reproduce: 1) insert a picture in this document, anchor it as character; 2) use 'draw' tool bar to draw a rectangle within the picture (in front of the picture); 4) save it and reopen it. 5) chances are, now you cannot select the rectangle anymore, if you click the rectangle, the picture (which anchored as a character) gets selected; fast reproduce: Open the document I attached, you will not be able to select the rectangle over the person's face (on the first page. as this document only has one page). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 57777] New - cannot save outline numbering character style in one odt document
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=5 Issue #:|5 Summary:|cannot save outline numbering character style in one |odt document Component:|Word processor Version:|OOo 2.0 Platform:|All URL:|http://bossdog.realss.com/eoa_manual.odt OS/Version:|All Status:|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard:| Keywords:| Resolution:| Issue type:|DEFECT Priority:|P3 Subcomponent:|save-export Assigned to:|mru Reported by:|zhangweiwu --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Nov 12 01:36:08 -0800 2005 --- Hello. On OOo 2 writer I did specified outline numbering (Tools - Outline Numbering) character style 'Chapter Numbering' for Heading 1' but after I saved and close the document, and re-open it, the Character Style automatically gets back to Numbering Symbols. It has been like it since Beta version and I am xpecting a fix for 2.0.0 but seems the problem is still there. This only happen with one particular document. Here is the document and this is how to reproduce this problem: http://bossdog.realss.com/eoa_manual.odt (becareful: download it, don't open it. Apache seems giving wrong content-type thus open this file directly in Mozilla browser, causing browser hang) The Chinese fonts used in this document are ShanHeiSun and ZenKai. They could both be downloaded freely from a website in case you need them: http://unifont.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/CJKUnifonts Here is how to reproduce in case someone wish to file a bug for it: 1) Open the document; 2) Go to outline and click to change the character style for Heading 1 from Numbering Symbols to Chapter Numbering; 3) Please have a look at any Heading 1 and make sure the leading numbering font color become white above orange eclipse background. As defined in Chapter Numbering style, the font color should be white; 4) save the document and close the document; 5) re-open this document (you don't need to restart openoffice); 6) check Heading 1 text you see the font color is NOT white; 7) go to Tools - outline and the Heading 1 character style goes back to Numbering Symbole. I tried this on OOo 2 and 1.9 on Windows, Gentoo Linux and Debian Linux. OOps. Also please notice this seems to be a bug on saving document. I tried to open the xml files in this odt file with a text editor and replaced the character style in Heading 1 numbering style manually and zip up the files, create a odt file manually, and the result is workable odt file with expected character style 'Chapter Numbering' - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
