-er: It is not a big deal to insert a formatted example into the ListBox.
The problem with the native numbering is that the locale, which is used for this
numbering, is the one set in tools/options/language settings/Local settings.
So the actual numbering depends on the locale of the OOo.

@os: Oliver, is it feasible to include a sample of the current native numbering
to the Native Numbering listbox entry?

Is this really the case? Hebrew alphabet/character numbering should never used?
This maybe could give us the opportunity to change the character numbering to
fixed Hebrew native numbering. However, if there are uses then changing it is
not possible.

Indeed. Oliver, is it feasible to include a sample of the current native

Hi Eike, Alan, Ronware
We discussed this issue thoroughly about three years ago on the
IVRIX-discussions and Linux-IL lists.

Use of consecutive Hebrew letters HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH through HEBREW_LETTER_TAV
and followed by HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH through
HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH HEBREW_LETTER_TAV for outline numbering is mandated by at
least one repectable old Israeli textbook. In fact, examples of this usage are
rare, and in electronic format do not exist.

There are no examples of consecutive letter numbering in footnote, paragraph or
page numbering, either in traditionally printed religious texts or in modern but
pre-computer Israeli texts.

ayaniger-MRU:
The comment submitted by ronware is correct. Numbering after 10 in OOo is not
handled properly. The link that ronware provided has correct information about
how Hebrew numbering should appear. I can look into fixing this. If I got some
pointers about where in the code the values are set, it would save me some time,
so I'd appreciate your help here.

FME-ER: This is an i18n issue. Looks like the Hebrew numbering uses wrong
unicode code points.

Hi Alan,

First, thanks for offering help.

I'm not sure this is really an i18n problem though. i18n knows different
numberings. For Hebrew there is an explicit character numbering, exposing the
behavior described above, that is similar to a Latin A,B,C,...,X,Y,Z and of
course does not count numbers. The other would be Native Numbering, also
selectable for list numbering, that should behave as requested when used with a
Hebrew locale.

To me this sounds more like a confusion caused by the dialog's listbox where
Native Numbering may not be that obvious opposed to the Hebrew characters one
sees.

Anyway, the implementation of numbering is in
i18npool/source/defaultnumberingprovider/defaultnumberingprovider.cxx
In method DefaultNumberingProvider::makeNumberingString() note the switch
numType cases NATIVE_NUMBER and CHARS_HEBREW.

The Hebrew algorithm for the native numbering is in
i18npool/source/nativenumber/nativenumbersupplier.cxx method makeHebrewNumber()

I put Karl Hong on Cc, he implemented most of the i18n numbering and
nativenumber code, and Oliver Specht who I assume is responsible for selecting
numbering in the Writer application.

Thanks
  Eike

The other would be Native Numbering, also selectable for list numbering,
that should behave as requested when used with a Hebrew locale.

In my case, I am using a US_EN locale, not a Hebrew locale; but I want to create
a document (in Hebrew) with the traditional Hebrew numbering.

As far as I know, noone uses the numbering exposed by OO - at least, no native
Hebrew speaker would use it.

If I had access to the sources, I could modify them myself (I'm a professional
programmer).

ayaniger-ronware:
The locale that Eike is referring to is not the system locale, but the OOo
locale defined in Tools/Options/Language Settings/Languages/Locale Setting. You
can set that to Hebrew, even if your system locale is en_US. If the OOo locale
is set to Hebrew, a document with native numbering will display the numbering
correctly even for numbers higher than 10. In other words, I was wrong and Eike
is right - this is not a bug. Use native numbering instead of aleph, bet,
gimel, and the numbers will be fine.

ayaniger-er:
This is confusing, though. I think it's worth some thought to find a way to make
this more clear to users. Perhaps adding to the string Native Numbering a
sample of the current locale's numbering?

If you create a list and select Hebrew numbers (or use Hebrew numbering for
pages) - then it works ok until ten. From eleven and onward, the numbering
is incorrect (egregiously so). Instead of eleven, OO shows twenty. Instead
of 12, OO shows thirty, and so forth

This site has a reasonable explanation of how the numbers should appear:

http://www.i18nguy.com/unicode/hebrew-numbers.html

I have attached an ODT which demonstrates the problem.
