Solaris 11.4 issues for Amanda 3.6.0.pre2
Hi I'm testing the release on Solaris 11.4 and the good news is that autogen/configure and build works with the gcc tools provided with the system it builds the 64 binaries with native Perl. Only one Perl module was missing Encode-Locale. Still there is an issues with ambind se debug listings below. I can provide more truss debugging if needed. I guess it has never been tested on Solaris 11 ? Is it a problem with the Solaris port for the 4.5.* version related ambind ? We have never seen this problem in older versions. Let me know if more debugging is needed. Hi, I'm testing the amanda-3_5-packaging-upgrade-wip and now it builds on my solaris 11.4 system. Amrecover fails to connect to the amindexd server see trace from below. Complains about too big message size see trace below. Server works if the amrecover client is 3.4.5 and the backup client seems to be working using th 3.4.5 version. SV: Tape write rate much slower efter upgrade
Hi, Below tape performance from running similar workload in version 3.2.0 and recently upgraded version 3.3.7p1. In this run I'm doing tape to tape vaulting. As you can see a huge degraded writing performance. I'm running the backup on Solaris 10 on sparc. Xfer IO seems to be much slower than in previous version for some reason ? Any ideas how to proceed and find out what's going on ? Hello, every month I run full backups to tape, and I want to make an extra copy of these tapes. I guess that amvault could create these copies and make amanda aware of these copies. On the mailing list I mainly found references where amvault is used in disk-to-disk-to-tape setups, where the backup is done to disk and amvault creates tapes from the disk backup. Is amvault expected to create tapes from an existing tape backup? Is anyone doing this? Successfully? Thanks, Sve

This has worked in all previous version of Amanda. . Ah, so this is using the amzfs-snapshot scripts? Jean-Louis, did something change here? I don't recall if we have a way for a script to change the diskdevice for a DLE? Did that work in 3.1 and not in 3.2? Tnanks Gunnar Gunnarson

OK. You should adjust the length in your tapetype definition, then - your tape appears to be at least 550% longer than you have configured. Can I add the tape length to: define changer vault { tpchanger chg-manual tapedev tape:/dev/rmt/0n changerfile changer.conf } Not sure what you mean by this - what was delayed? The holding disk was filled up before vtape was written. You probably should be excluding ./devices? This worked in verions 3.1.1 something is changed 3.2.0beta3 nothing else has changed on the system. I testaed another Solaris client with this version and got the same problem. ufsdump on submirror
Hi, I'm backuping a busy UFS filesystem in Solaris, fssnap can't be used because it's not supported in SUN HA Cluster. so I'm stuck with using submirrors and taken them offline/online. I do this using amgtar and script tool. My question is can this be done using dump instead. I'm hoping that ufsdump is performing better than gtar on this filesystem - more than 2 millions files. Thanks Gunnar Gunnarsson

I Hoogendyk, Chris wrote: Haven't seen an answer to this yet, so I'll hazard a comment and question. One approach is to do a wrapper, as in http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Backup_client#Chris_Hoogendyk.27s_Example, where I'm doing an fssnap before the ufsdump and following it with deleting the snapshot. You could modify it to fit your needs. That wrapper also has a stop application for xntpd (which is a real time application) when doing an fssnap of the root partition because of a bug in fssnap. What version are you using? I'm using 2.6.* but I'm upgrading to 3.1.0. I'm running Solaris 10 and I can't use fssnap for UFS becuase it's not supported in a cluster evironment. ZFS didn't work out either because it is using variable block size in the filesystem which breaks part of the application so the last resort is using a 3-way mirror and doing detach stopping the application and then restart it, go through with backup and then detach the third-mirror and resync. What are the improvement for scripting in version 3.1.0 and how can this be wrapped into the client ? Since the filesystem contians a lot of files ( few millions ) I belive that ufsdump works better than gtar. Thanks Gunnar Gunnarsson

Its capabilities will be expanded -- it will be able to re-assemble and re-split dumps, so the source and destination volume sizes need not match. The command will still be separate from the usual amdump runs, and won't do the usual report-sending or log-rotating. To put it another way, amvault will benefit from the improvements being made to how changers, devices and data are handled, but I won't have a chance to address the higher-level questions of scheduling, metadata maintenance, tertiary tape cycles, etc. Good working Dustin. Since these datasets can span more then one tape (upto 3.5 TB) just using tar or dump is not the solution (at least I'm not aware how to do this). So can I use amanda for this? I found something about long-term archiving in the faq but it is not to elaborate. I'm surprised nobody wanted to answer this. Amanda is really designed around the idea of repeatedly backing up the same data, rather than doing one-off dumps. Folks certainly have cajoled Amanda into doing what you describe, through manual configuration (editing the disklist all the time). If you're feeling more motivated, we're to the point where Amanda has the tools to do this sort of thing for you -- with a bit of Perl and some studying of the Amanda::* POD, you could write an application that takes a stream as input (say, a tarball) and write it to tape: tar -czf - /my/sequences | write-to-tapes SequenceBackupou working and still use the usual Amanda recovery tools to read that data (amfetchdump, probably -- amrecover would be useless since there are no indices, but I doubt you need indices). If you're interested in working on a script like this, I'll be happy to help. Dustin -- Open Source Storage Engineer http://www.zmanda.com

I'm been using amzfs-snapshot and it works well. One feature that I would like to have in the plug-in is an option to run a script before and after a snapshot is created thus I can shutdown my application create a snapshot bring it online and proceed with the backup. Why not add a general script application that could be user for rman backup for oracle as well in the distribution. Thanks Gunnar Gunnarsson

SV: Backups to disk and tape
On Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 9:22 AM, Peter Spikings [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is that possible? (because I can't see how from reading the man pages). What you're asking about is called D2D2T, and Amanda doesn't support it directly just yet, although preliminary support is a goal for the next release or so. RAIT is the current best option. As long as you're mirroring, there's no problem with deleting a vtape after 7 days. If you need to recover that data, you'll just retrieve the tape and use it directly. So a little bit of shell wrapper can get you up and running with this scheme in no time. I'd be interested to hear folks' high-level thoughts on how D2D2T (or, more generally, data migration) configuration should work in Amanda. Should migration be a separate step from dumping (a la amflush)? Should migration be scheduled somehow (and if so, with what sort of parameters), or should Amanda require explicit instructions on which dumps to migrate and when? We're still laying the low-level groundwork for migration, so there's lots of time to pontificate. One usage of data migrations is archiving which is being used and often implemented as separate config doing only 0 dumps. I think that migration should be done in similar way i.e. separated from dumping - ammigrating with it's own configuration, with parameters selecting images/tapes from amanda configurations. - config, host, disk, level, frequency - tape support Of course the is only one aspect of migrations but important one that would add much value to amanda.
