Solaris 11.4 issues for Amanda 3.6.0.pre2

2022-05-27 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi

I'm testing the release on Solaris 11.4 and the good news is that
autogen/configure and build works with the gcc tools provided with the system
it builds the 64 binaries with native Perl. Only one Perl module was missing
Encode-Locale.
Still there is an issues with ambind se debug listings below. I can provide
more truss debugging if needed. I guess it has never been tested on Solaris 11 ?

Thanks GG

Re: Sent out a pull-request to upgrade the packaging system....

2022-03-23 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Is it a problem with the Solaris port for the 4.5.* version related ambind ? We
have never seen this problem in older versions.
Let me know if more debugging is needed. Have you been able to reproduce the
error ?

Thanks Gunnar

2022-03-22 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

I'm testing the amanda-3_5-packaging-upgrade-wip and now it builds on my
solaris 11.4 system.
Amrecover fails to connect to the amindexd server see trace from below.
Complains about too big message size see trace below.
Server works if the amrecover client is 3.4.5 and the backup client seems to be
working using th 3.4.5 version.

Thanks Gunnar

NOTE: it seems at least gcc 7 is a good idea for the Solaris build. Autoconf
2.69 seems to be the minimal level.

To start from a clean set of source.

% git clean -dfx
% ./autogen

( Not sure if autogen is necessary any more. It can be done automatically in
the scripts. )

To build binaries and packages in the top directory (where the source is) ...
depending what you are running on. [Same dir setup as old].

% ./packaging/rpm/build client
% ./packaging/deb/build client
% ./packaging/sun-pkg/build client

To build current working dirs in a subdirectory

Nice to see progress.

I assume you want us to try to build the code in that PR?

pls point to some howto, I can't remember the procedure anymore (autoconf? etc)

I can test on Debian 11, for example.

Amanda version 3.5.1 for 64B sparc 11.4

2022-03-16 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

I'm testing out amanda version 3.5.1 for Sparc Solaris 11.4 ( native perl is
know 64 ) and it compiles when using --without-ndmp ( no 64 support in Solaris
).
I'm getting this error from amrecover. Any suggestion what might be the problem
? Should I compile the code with --without-ipv6 support ?

I have. We have a community release due… way … way way overdue. I’m afraid
it’s been only myself doing it.(A lot of change has been disruptive, I’m
afraid).

In addition... I got the packaging to work for the new Solaris 11 type. So
there’s that. When we have version 4.1.1 out I’ll have more time.

Hi

I’m been trying to compile the latest community release for Solaris for 64

amvault - using vault-storage section

2017-09-19 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hello amanda-users,

When I upgraded to amanda version 3.4.5 I added a storage section in order to
run the amvault and it works. But the daily runs are complaining about not
finding any volumes in that storage sections as they are marked no-reuse. So
what is wrong with my setup ?

SV: Tape write rate much slower efter upgrade

2015-09-04 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

Below tape performance from running similar workload in version 3.2.0 and
recently upgraded version 3.3.7p1. In this run I'm doing tape to tape
vaulting. As you can see a huge degraded writing performance. I'm running the
backup on Solaris 10 on sparc. Xfer IO seems to be much slower than in
previous version for some reason ?
Any ideas how to proceed and find out what's going on ?

I witnessed the same behaviour back in February when upgrading from
3.3.5 to 3.3.7. I tried to post to the list a few times but somehow my posts
never made it, maybe because they had 2 pics attached showing the performance
from the hold disk to the tape drive. Here's what I wrote back then:

"2 weeks ago I upgraded one of my amanda server from 3.3.5 to 3.3.7.
Right away I noticed a ~25% tape write performance degradation to a LTO4 tape
drive. I've attached 2 pics showing the xfer IO rate to/from the
holddisk: one shows a snapshot of the week after the upgrade with the 10th of
Feb still at 3.3.5 (and a xfer rate of ~100MBs) and a drop to ~75MBs after the
upgrade was done. I reverted back to 3.3.5 a few days ago and the 2nd snapshot
shows a return to previous rate."

Support for LVM snapshot revisited ( amlvm-snapshot )

2012-01-17 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

I recently installed LVM snapshot application amlvm-snapshot from
https://github.com/marxarelli/amlvm-snapshot
Having fixed minor problem with the kernel device mapper paths I got it up and
running , substitute ../ with /dev and cleaning unused mount point.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS with Ubuntu Amanda packages version 2.6.1p1.
Why not include this application in the core Amanda distribution properly ?

Define a dst-changer definition in your amanda.conf and run the amvault

Ämne: amvault for disk-to-tape-to-tape setups?

Hello,

every month I run full backups to tape, and I want to make an extra copy of
these tapes. I guess that amvault could create these copies and make amanda
aware of these copies.

On the mailing list I mainly found references where amvault is used in
disk-to-disk-to-tape setups, where the backup is done to disk and amvault
creates tapes from the disk backup.

Is amvault expected to create tapes from an existing tape backup? Is anyone
doing this? Successfully?

Thanks,

   Sve

LEOM and part_size question

Hi,

If LEOM is working on my storage device should I define part_size as well ?
Doing disk backup ( Vtapes ) LEOM is automatically enabled and I don't specify

2010-10-26 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

I version 3.2.0 amgtar is not using PROPERTY directory amzfs-snapshot, has
something changed regarding this in 3.2.0 ?

This has been working in the previous version of amanda, snipped from debug

amgtar should be called with --directory
/export/.zfs/snapshot/amanda-_export-current

SV: amvault report - *** THE DUMPS DID NOT FINISH PROPERLY!

2010-10-09 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar

OK. You should adjust the length in your tapetype definition, then - your
tape appears to be at least 550% longer than you have configured.

Can I add the tape length to:

define changer vault {
tpchanger chg-manual
tapedev tape:/dev/rmt/0n
changerfile changer.conf
}

Not sure what you mean by this - what was delayed?
The holding disk was filled up before vtape was written.

You probably should be excluding ./devices?

This worked in verions 3.1.1 something is changed 3.2.0beta3 nothing else has
changed on the system. I testaed another Solaris client with this version and
got the same problem.

No, it needs to be in the tapetype. It's weird, I know, but there are some

ok it's different machines but I downgraded the client and the log was

Hmm, I don't think we made any changes to how GNU Tar is invoked that would
cause it to no longer be able to read special device files - it never could
do that. If you still have a sendbackup debug log from 3.1.x, can you
compare the tar invocation to the one made by 3.2.0?

SV: Testing amvault

2010-10-08 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi Dustin,

Good work releasing beta3. Few thing that come to my mind while testing amvault
regarding slections of dumps.

- latest dump with --src-timestamp latest
- all dumps without specifying --src-timestamp
- parts by specifying dates eg. --src-timestamp 20100926-20101008

I would likte to select all but only the most recent version.

Thanks Gunnar Gunnarsson

With luck, we'll have a 3.2.0beta2 out by Thursday that will resolve this
problem. If not, you can apply

http://github.com/zmanda/amanda/commit/cfe0f6e656401da07d3c9040a763055808185285.patch

in place (don't worry about the manpage hunk - just patch /usr/sbin/amvault and
$amperldir/Amanda/Taper/Scribe.pm).

Hi Dustin,

A script-tool application for running script taking parameters such as path to
script, PFEXEC or SUDO and when to run etc

define script-tool amplugin-script {

property PFEXEC YES
property SUDO no
execute-on pre-dle-backup,pre-dle-amcheck,post-dle-backup
}

Tailored backup script could then more easily being intergraded into amanda

I bet most of you have some small nitpick with Amanda that you've never felt
warranted an email. Well, now's your chance! I'd like to put some polish on
Amanda, and it's hard for me to see the areas that need burnishing, since I
work on Amanda all day, every day.

 - typo in a manpage?
 - command-line usage oddity?
 - confusing use of terminology?
 - something else?

SV: lvm snapshots

2010-08-27 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

I'm backing up active filesystem using ufs snapsshot and metaonline/offline for
mirrors in Solaris.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas how to proceed.

define script-tool fssnap-script {
  comment snapshot wrapper
  plugin fssnap-script
  property FSSNAP-WRAPPER /etc/opt/amanda/metaonline_snap.sh
  execute_on pre-dle-backup,pre-dle-amcheck,post-dle-backup
  execute_where client # or client

}

define dumptype snap-dump {
comp-root
compress client custom
client_custom_compress /usr/local/bin/pigz
script fssnap-script
auth bsdtcp
}

I am thinking of backing up some DLEs that are fairly active from a snapshot
rather than from the filesystem directly. I looked for documentation on doing
this but could find none, nor any HowTo's.

SV: ufsdump on submirror

2010-07-27 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar

Yes it worked out well in the end. I had one Solaris issue that ufsdump
complained about not being
able to create some directory see below but this disappeared when file system
was mounted. I guess it's some
kind of security issue as backup is run not by root.

sendbackup: 115: strange(?): Unable to create temporary directory in any of the
directories listed below:

sendbackup: 115: strange(?): /var/tmp/

I believe the short answer is yes.

We had alternate boot roots on a FW system and used ufsdump to dump the
unmounted boot roots (as well as the active boot root). Since it was
umounted as specified the device string in the DLE, /dev/dsk/cX...

How about for the enclosing directory? Amanda tries to write the tapelist

How about for the enclosing directory? Amanda tries to write the tapelist
safely by writing to a temporary file in the same directory and renaming. Is
the taper running as 'amanda' or 'amandabackup'?

ufsdump on submirror

2010-06-30 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar
Hi,

I'm backuping a busy UFS filesystem in Solaris, fssnap can't be used because
it's not supported in SUN HA Cluster.
so I'm stuck with using submirrors and taken them offline/online. I do this
using amgtar and script tool. My question is can
this be done using dump instead. I'm hoping that ufsdump is performing better
than gtar on this filesystem - more than 2 millions files.

Thanks Gunnar Gunnarsson

Haven't seen an answer to this yet, so I'll hazard a comment and question.

One approach is to do a wrapper, as in
 http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/Backup_client#Chris_Hoogendyk.27s_Example,
where I'm doing an fssnap before the ufsdump and following it with deleting
the snapshot. You could modify it to fit your needs. That wrapper also has a
stop application for xntpd (which is a real time
application) when doing an fssnap of the root partition because of a bug in
 fssnap.

 What version are you using?

I'm using 2.6.* but I'm upgrading to 3.1.0.

I'm running Solaris 10 and I can't use fssnap for UFS becuase it's not
supported in a cluster evironment. ZFS didn't work out either
because it is using variable block size in the filesystem which breaks part of
the application so the last resort is using a 3-way mirror
and doing detach stopping the application and then restart it, go through with
backup and then detach the third-mirror and resync.

What are the improvement for scripting in version 3.1.0 and how can this be
wrapped into the client ?
Since the filesystem contians a lot of files ( few millions ) I belive that
ufsdump works better than gtar.

Ah, it's a similar problem as in the previous case, then: the device goes into
an error state, and that state sticks.

Probably the better solution is to re-create the device as necessary.

That's odd.. it looks like it wrote 6910315 blocks, yet when it multiplied that

Did this take a long time, or happen immediately? Can you add some print's

Oh, silly me - the code detects that the tape drive needs the
FSF_AFTER_FILEMARK property, by virtue of getting an error from the device ..
but then fails on that very error.

This should be pretty easy to fix - try this patch:
  http://github.com/djmitche/amanda/commit/fsf_after_filemark.patch

You can probably apply that in-place without too much trouble.

Yes it ran for a quite long time.
I added a print in the script see below. It will run over the night.

That all depends on whether you are up on your patches. I went and checked my
Solaris 10 system and found:

 # /usr/sfw/bin/gtar --version

 tar (GNU tar) 1.22
Copyright (C) 2009 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

That is the gnutar release from 3/09, and the only newer one is 1.23 from 3/10.
But, I had done an upgrade late last year (using liveupdate and the 5/09
release), and have also applied the latest recommended and security patch
bundles within the last few months. So, I have

 # more /etc/release

   Solaris 10 5/09 s10s_u7wos_08 SPARC
Copyright 2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
 Assembled 30 March 2009

All of which means, check what your system actually has (and keep it up to
date).

the symbol from there and added to the librestore library. After having cleaned
up the system the build process works using gcc

Odd! getconf_str is a macro defined in conffile.h, so the linker should never
see it.

The reference is most likely from restore-src/restore.c, which doesn't
actually include conffile.h. However, find.h includes diskfile.h which
includes conffile.h, so the macro definition should be available all the same.

SV: is amanda the right solution

2009-08-21 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar

Its capabilities will be expanded -- it will be able to re-assemble and
re-split dumps, so the source and destination volume sizes need not match.
The command will still be separate from the usual amdump runs, and won't do
the usual report-sending or log-rotating.

To put it another way, amvault will benefit from the improvements being made
to how changers, devices and data are handled, but I won't have a chance to
address the higher-level questions of scheduling, metadata maintenance,
tertiary tape cycles, etc.

Good working Dustin.
One more question on amvault what would be the result of calling 'amvault
latest' for a giving configuration - I would expect to
get the most resent 0 dump on each volume in the disk list is that correct ?

So can I use amanda for this? I found something about long-term

I'm surprised nobody wanted to answer this.

Amanda is really designed around the idea of repeatedly backing up the same
data, rather than doing one-off dumps. Folks certainly have cajoled Amanda
into doing what you describe, through manual configuration (editing the
disklist all the time).

If you're feeling more motivated, we're to the point where Amanda has the tools
to do this sort of thing for you -- with a bit of Perl and some studying of the
Amanda::* POD, you could write an application that takes a stream as input
(say, a tarball) and write it to tape:

tar -czf - /my/sequences | write-to-tapes SequenceBackupou working

and still use the usual Amanda recovery tools to read that data (amfetchdump,
probably -- amrecover would be useless since there are no indices, but I doubt
you need indices).

If you're interested in working on a script like this, I'll be happy to help.

Can you tell us more? I don't have the SL24, but, if it works for Solaris, it
ought to just work for Amanda (via mt and mtx).

I did find an exchange on the netbackup list (on backupcentral) where they were
having issues with this setup, and someone pointed out a Sun patch issue that
affected the drivers:

http://www.auscert.org.au/render.html?it=9490
(linked to from
http://www.backupcentral.com/phpBB2/two-way-mirrors-of-external-mailing-lists-3/symantec-netbackup-18/mpt-driver-and-sg-91205/)

Don't know if that will solve your problem, but, with more information, someone
on the list may be able to help.

I don't see it on the mtx compatibility list
(http://mtx.opensource-sw.net/compatibility.php?sorttype=1start=1count=0);
but, then, that is a user contributed list, and people may just not take the
time to contribute. I'm going to add my own library now, because it isn't on
there either (and I've been using it successfully for quite some time now).

Amanda zfs

2009-03-05 Thread Gunnarsson, Gunnar

I'm been using amzfs-snapshot and it works well. One feature that I would like
to have in the plug-in is an option to run
a script before and after a snapshot is created thus I can shutdown my
application create a snapshot bring it online and
proceed with the backup.

Why not add a general script application that could be user for rman backup for
oracle as well in the distribution.

Just a WAG. Only thing in common is Solaris, but it was 9 vs 10.

My mt command often would return while the tape was still rewinding. If run
from the command line, I would get the next shell prompt and yet could still
hear the tape drive and see the tape's activity lights.

Until the tape had actually completed its task, new commands would fail. In my
scripts, I had to insert sleep X (X to be empirically defined) after mt cmds
that might take a significant time.

No, you're definitely seeing weird behavior from your tape changer.

You may want to increase initial_poll_delay in your changer.conf so that it
gives the tape drive more time to unload while scanning for tapes.

- it's a snapshot of the Amanda 2.6.1 *alpha* *development* SVN tree.

Having said that Amanda built from SVN HEAD works pretty well!

Q : Is anyone planning to backup ZFS volumes with Amanda?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

What you're asking about is called D2D2T, and Amanda doesn't support it
directly just yet, although preliminary support is a goal for the next
release or so.

RAIT is the current best option. As long as you're mirroring, there's
no problem with deleting a vtape after 7 days. If you need to recover
that data, you'll just retrieve the tape and use it directly. So a
little bit of shell wrapper can get you up and running with this scheme
in no time.

I'd be interested to hear folks' high-level thoughts on how D2D2T (or,
more generally, data migration) configuration should work in Amanda.
Should migration be a separate step from dumping (a la amflush)?
Should migration be scheduled somehow (and if so, with what sort of
parameters), or should Amanda require explicit instructions on which
dumps to migrate and when? We're still laying the low-level groundwork
for migration, so there's lots of time to pontificate.

One usage of data migrations is archiving which is being used and often
implemented as separate config doing only 0 dumps. I think that
migration should be done in similar way i.e. separated from dumping -
ammigrating with it's own configuration, with parameters selecting
images/tapes from amanda configurations.

- config,host,disk,level,frequency
- tape support

Of course the is only one aspect of migrations but important one that
would add much value to amanda.
