[AMRadio] Spline Wrenches for HT-37 Knobs
I am taking an HT-37 transmitter apart. I need to know what the spline wrenches size are to take the knobs off. After first of year when everyone's pocket book gets back near normal, I will post the subchassises for sale(very reasonable). Yes, the 811A fit the same socket as a 866. I believe that includes the bayonet pin also. I had a power supply using 866s and went to solid state. Which ferrite beads or filtering should I use, and should I place any such devices on the house side of the entry box rather than, or in addition to at the connection point for each phone? The rfi was present before the hum appeared, so I doubt curing the hum will cure the rfi, although it certainly might at least reduce it. Mike Duke, K5XU American Council of Blind Radio Amateurs ---tom sez- Hi Mike, The last time I had hum on the phone it was caused by a water intrusion problem on the telco line outside the house. The way to check if it is your problem or theirs you may have already gone through this drill, sorry), is to plug a phone into the interface box on the outside of the house, which will isolate all the house wiring from the telco line. If there is hum, give the telco folks a call. If the hum is inside, start isolating things inside until you find it. [AMRadio] 3 kV CT transformer
Jack, K9ACT, before you pay Peter D. to make a new transformer, I wanted to tell you that EBAY has transformers that meet your needs quite often. Search under HV Transformers, and Plate Transformers as keywords, and you will find various parts. You have to look through a list of microwave oven transformers, photocopying transformers, and TRANSFORMERS, those little toys. Buried in there you will see occasional Westinghouse, UTC, GE, and so forth. Depending on the current you need, a 3 KV CT (good for a little under 1400 VDC output with a choke input) might cost about $30-50 on EBAY, if you are lucky. 1100-0-1100 to 1500-0-1500 secondary transformers are much more common than 2500-0-2500 and up. So they don't cost as much. The higher voltage high power models go for >$100 typically, sometimes too much. Depending on your current requirement, you might need something like a UTC 303, 311 or 312. The first is 22 lbs, but the second two are 50 lb units. These were the commercial grade UTCs. Their S Series S-47 or 48 might also fit your needs, weighing 24 or 31 lbs. These are all still found surplus if you look for them. Stancor, Chicago, Thordarson, and Triad all made something in this range also. If you don't mind paying for shipping and crating, I could probably find something either in my shed or at the local junkyard that will be one of these. Here is a store on EBAY, that always has plate transformers, sometimes large. I have bought modulation transformers from them: "Uncle Henry's Basement. RE: [AMRadio] Odd signals in lower 80 meters
I haven't listened on 80 for those signals but I have herd similar to what you describe in the past. A few years ago there were several companies selling scramblers that inverted the audio. A lot of them went into South America and were used by people for their "private" radio networks. I would guess many were not licensed users. You can not decode it by switching side bands. It is simply done by mixing the speech with an audio tone and everything comes out upside down. The high frequencies come out as low frequencies and the low frequencies come out at high frequencies and they are offset by the mixing tone frequency. If you listen carefully you can make out a word once in awhile. 73 Gary K4FMX > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:amradio- > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of A.R.S. - W5AMI > Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 12:05 PM > To: Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service > Subject: [AMRadio] Odd signals in lower 80 meters > > Has anyone beside Don/KYV and myself heard these odd sounding voice > signals between 3700 and about 3750 that seem to be sideband, but can > not be tuned in either lower or upper sideband? Re: [AMRadio] WTB: HV Transformer
- Original Message From: Jack Schmidling <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Did some more "research" on that issue and it's a cute idea but as we discussed, the xformer has a WV of 1500 (whatever that means) and it would be limited to half the current, i.e. 250 ma. Reply from Jim, WD5JKO, Jack, I am not sure what exactly those 'WV' ratings actually mean, or how they are rated with a given safety factor. Maybe someone else can chime in with that. In general, some transformers don't like the center tap to float since insulation in that area might be marginal. If all the HV terminals including the C.T. are insulated with ceramic feed throughs, then using a FW bridge will probably work. You raise an interesting point about de-rating a transformer to 1/2 current when using a bridge. Keep in mind the duty cycle of amateur transmitters on AM. This might be 3 minutes on, and 15 minutes off when in a round table. That means the duty cycle is < 20%. As long as the core does not saturate, run it at rated current at 4 times the output power (twice voltage at same current = 4x power, P=E^2/R) so long as the duty cycle is low. Many transformers rated for CCS at high altitude are excellent candidates for this approach. I am building a power supply for a 8877 linear amplifier, and I plan on using a Collins transformer that goes from 120/240 to 2250 CT at .565 amps (CCS at 10,000 feet). I will be using a FW bridge, and plan on loading the 8877 to 1 ampere at tune up for brief periods. That transformer is BIG and HEAVY, and the HV winding resistance is really low. I don't think there will be a problem, but I'll let you know once I get it built. My 2 cents, Jim __ AMRadio mailing list List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net
Re: [AMRadio] WTB: HV Transformer
Jack, I don't know your space limitations but consider using two 1500 volt transformers or 3 or 4 smaller transformers. You could build 3 or 4 smaller power supplies of 750 to 1000 volts and hook the secondary in series. This has been done commercially to get 3000 to 5000 volts. Just be sure to isolate the power supplies well above ground for breakdown voltage reasons. the transformers in the upper voltage units will also need good winding isolation for breakdown voltages at the 3000 to 4000 volts.
