I usually use Hospital Grade 20 A outlets in recording studio installations

is far better than the cheap 15 A ones found at most electric depts.
Sure glad I picked up a 5 gallon bucket of military shelter pulls years ago.

Re: [AMRadio] USPS Changes May 14

2007-05-04 Thread Don Buska

Hi Bry,

I do a great deal of Priority Mail shipments. The nice thing is the
USPS allows me to do everything on the web and even schedule for the
mail carrier to pick it up when they deliver the mail. All the Priority
mail boxes are sent to me "free of charge" (packs of 25 boxes) also via
web order. So with all the down sides, especially those I read about
the overseas Global Priority mail, the USPS has made something very easy
for the shipper. Note, that anyone can use these services. So it's
been a long time since I've stood in those lines.

Now I just need to do some research on what direction I'll be going with
my international shipments.

Thank God for FEDEX!

As you know I ship a lot, so it is interesting to me
the changes that USPS is putting in May 14. Rate
increases on everything of course--that's standard.
But their parcel post service is actually changing
quite a bit.

Foreign surface mail shipping has been eliminated.
It's all air mail as of May 14th. That should really
cut down on the number of boatanchors crossing the
pond.

Global priority mail is now limited to 3 ounces. That
kills the best way to ship small parts, mics and
accessories overseas inexpensively.

Parcel Post--ALL packages now have to be measured and
are charged more as size goes up--not just weight.
That should certainly drive a lot of shiping into
UPS/FedEx camp.

There's many other small changes. If you ship a lot,
you probably ought to visit USPS.COM and check it out.

I'm sure everybody purchases insurance or delivery
confirmation when you ship by USPS. But just in case
you don't, for that little item going across town,
when USPS loses it, its gone forever. USPS, unlike
everybody else, has no way to track any package or
letter unless you get the insurance or delivery
confirmation, at extra cost, albeit not much in most
cases. If they do lose it without the above, you fill
out a bunch of paper work, and wait a month or two,
they might just find it, but usually they dont.
What's really neat is when you get this plastic bag
with a mangled, grease covered item in it, where the
post office sent it back saying it got caught in the
machinery, "so sorry".

[AMRadio] FS: Gates BC-1H at HamCom

2007-05-04 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

There are two BC-1H's that will be available during HamCom in Plano
this year. Both are working units, ready to go on 160 meters as is
with simple re-tuning. I have already spoken for one of them. The
other is missing only a panel meter, otherwise totally complete. I
may have a source on a meter that will work. They must both be picked
up and the transaction made at the same time due to time constraints
of the seller.

This is a one kilowatt rig using a pair of 833's modulated by a pair
of 833's. Again, complete except for one panel meter.

If you are interested, and going to HamCom, please contact me OFF-LIST
for more details and price. Please do not wait until the last minute,
as I need to contact the seller to confirm the sale(s). I can likely
get some photos of the unit as well.

Email me direct off the list at ars.w5ami "at" gmail.com. Change the
"at" with a @ of course.

[AMRadio] high-priced accessories and audiophools revisited

2007-05-04 Thread Geoff/W5OMR

From the 'you're kidding me, right?' files...

I mentioned a while back, that there was little that could surprise me
anymore. Once in a while, it happens.

http://hcmaudio.com/comp.asp?compID=335

Their claims is:

"If you are building your own audiophile power cords to improve
performance in your audio or home theatre system then you’ll definitely
want to use the 381. Why build a performance power cable and then plug
it into a ordinary receptacle? The WattGate™ 381 is the perfect way to
fine tune the power source for your high-end audio or home theatre
system. The construction of the 381 is very durable and features
glass-filled, nylon-tough front and rear housings for UV and chemical
resistance. The mounting strap, rivets and grounding strip are gold
plated, solid brass.

Installation of the 381 is simple and efficient due to rear wiring and
large, #10 brass terminal screws. The terminal clamps are gold plated,
solid brass and shaped to better grip the conductors. Like the 330 and
350, the 381 leaves the competition behind with its contacts. They are
configured in a triple-wipe design to allow the plug blade to be gripped
at three separate points. Additionally, the contacts are made of very
heavy-duty material to maximize the clamping spring-rate and ensure
conductivity and the three-layer plating process is also completed on
the 381: Oxygen free copper plating, electroless nickel, and finally 24k
gold plating dramatically improves conductivity and prevents corrosion.
Receptacle is 125V, 20 amp."

Comparatively speaking, you can get the 'lesser' model, for -only- $147
($140ea, if you purchase 4 or more)

If you file an insurance claim with USPS it can take well
over 6 months for them to process it and pay you back.
They charge a LOT for insurance, in my opinion,
considering the poor service and the frequent losses.
