[AMRadio] Fw: Johnson Viking Matchbox
I wish to acknowledge the post that I received from Bob Sullivan, W0YVA, who assisted me in realigning the differential capacitor in my two Matchboxes, a 250 and 1 KW units. Bob told me that the differential capacitor (the one on the right) was positioned to where the rotor was half way inside each of the two (fixed) stator sections - the one on the top and the one on the bottom. The knob is repositioned on the shaft to read "50" or midscale. The rotor plates are positioned to the left inside the stator. I confirmed what Bob was telling me by removing the cabinet from a Matchbox that had never been opened. Incidentally, when the knob on the left should read "100" when the rotor plates are fully meshed inside the stator. E.F. Johnson did not include this information in the manual since, I imagine, they believed that no one had any business inside the unit to change the settings of the two variables when the tuning knobs were removed - WRONG! And I will be operating the James Millen W1HRX flagship station this year from the Frozen Tundra of Minnesota. So if you hear me, please give a call because I'd like work you! Plus if you're collecting points in the QSO Party, W1HRX and W2AN each count as 10 points. I'm planning to start out on 75 meters at the beginning of the QSO Party, maybe later migrate to 160 if conditions allow. On Sunday I'll probably start out again on 75, shift to 40 meters, and then later shift to 20 meter AM.W1HRX qsl cards are available with an SASE to me. It could be the Guard. The C-124s were used into the 70's by the Guard. Also the KC-135s had the ART-13/BC-348 in the early days. During my time in the UASF (1952 to 1958) all multiengine reciprocated aircraft that flew over water had the ART-13/BC-348 combo. I got the privilege to fly in KB-29s as a crewmember. I got to ride in C-124s, C-119s, and C-123s for punishment! There are some very simple (and reversible) things you can do to improve the audio, switching the mic to dynamic (under the frequency chart) is a good start. Robert Downs has connectors, Fair Radio did have, maybe Wm. Perry too. Do you have the dynamotor for it? Will this cover 160 Did it come with the proper LF oscillator installed? There were two, one has a three position frequency switch, the other has 5. You want the latter, then 160 is a cinch. [AMRadio] RE: AMRadio Digest, Vol 49, Issue 18
We had the ATC (paired with an ARR-41 or ARR-15 as I recall) in some of the P-2Vs in the late 60s-early 70s along with an ARC-38A to talk to the SSB airways stations. It was an impressive and noisy event to watch/listen to the autotune spin the dials on the ATC/ART-13 along with the ARR-15 Rcvr!! That autotune was loud sitting between those R-3350 engines, so I imagine it must be deafening in your typical hamshack! When the squadron graduated from the P-2 to the P-3, we upgraded to a pair of ARC-94 (Collins 618T)transceivers with an ARR-41 (so-called mini R-390) installed so we could listen to time signals or the BBC! We had ARR-41s in our C-130s up until a couple of years ago (the old F models, not the newer Ts or USAF Hs.) Everytime I go past Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, I just imagine what a goldmine of ART-13s/ATCs/ARR-41s/ARC-94s/etc must be out there in the field! I wonder what the breaker yards outside the gate do with all the BA radios they remove? 73 Tom/W4OKW USN Ret ---orig msg-- Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2008 12:43:19 -0500 From: "jeremy-ca" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [AMRadio] My latest toy has arrived, an ART-13A A couple of Mil urls say into the 70's. All Thank you for participating in my little ad-hoc survey of AMers. I will copy the results below. For those responers who responded openly to the list, I thank you and since everyone has already seen your comments, there is no need for me to copy them. For those who responded to me directly and not to the list, then i will honor your trust and not publish your comments. You are free to list your comments yourselves, of course. We had 22 responders. The favorite band was 80 meters, the favorite antenna was a dipole. I was surprized that the favorite feed line was ladder, not coax. Most people use a transmatch, and the vast majority use separate transmitters and receivers. Most activity takes place in mornings or evenings, and on weekends. Most of us spend 4 to 10 hours per week on the hobby, and another surprize was that two thirds of respondents prefer technical work to operating. RE: [AMRadio] My latest toy has arrived, an ART-13A
What's the nomenclature on the ART-13 dynamotor? I have a monster in my shed, but can't remember the details. Rick/K5IAR Id like to find a dynamotor Todd, Ive a big 28VDC supply and it will be a lot faster to get it up and running. It has the 5 position LF switch. Re: [AMRadio] My latest toy has arrived, an ART-13A & Survey
Not an ART-13 story but something maybe similar. In the late 70's I was a contract engineer for NASA. I was on the NASA C-141 Airborne Observatory project. We flew this aircraft above 43,000. One of the Misson Directors was also the Director of the Medium Altitude Missions Branch. When he was the Misson Director he would use the 50W(?) HF transmitter tuned to the 11M(CB) just for kicks. He used the handle "Big Bird". He would tell the truckers his rig was a "TEN WHEELER" with FOUR STACKS and a TEE TAIL! We never did get a citation. I knew WWII radio ops (Europe) that claimed they would often send their strike reports on the emergency frequency. Only problem was the ARC 13 was in the rear compartment and 13 ft to the ground. A few were dropped trying to get them out. Sure did have good coverage from 40,000 ft. Re: [AMRadio] Golden Gate
Good find Geoff !! Looks very much like the circuit I got from Frank Jones (as I recall). I used it in the late 50's or early 60's I think. For a poor GI, the parts list fit the bill. Wont sound like 2x810's but good enuff on a good night.
