Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
I am purposely sending this to the list so others see how I feel about the situation. I am one of the sellers that use this reflector. About once a month I post an ad for tubes or parts or equipment. I try to comply with the rules but being human and old, I forget because this reflector is different from the others I subscribe to. The other reflectors go only to the person posting the message when you hit reply . You have to hit reply all to post it to the reflector. Only this reflector does it go to the list when you hit reply. It is a nuisance and pain in the a-- to have to cut and paste when a simple hit of reply should accomplish what you want. I will be happy to unsubscribe if you so indicate. There are a lot more reflectors to sell on, not to mention Ebay. Many of the folks here have gotten used to the current set up, but it will still happen over time as new folks come to the list used to the more standard way. Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
Well, not a good day for me, I guess Some of you should remember when we DID change the config of the list where a simple reply (not reply all) would go to the sender and NOT the list. Everyone complained for about a week or more about that, so I put it back the way it was. That was about 2 years or more ago. What I can do folks??? I make it one way and people complain, I make it another way, and I still get it. How hard is it for someone to simply embed their email address in their for sale ads so someone can just click on it to buy and item ??? My email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], and that took me less than 5 seconds to type in this posting.. Go figure... That's all we/I ask.. I do the best I can with ALL of this. I get complaints in personal email about all the excessive quoting in replies, the buyers saying I'll take this or that, and a lot of other crap. I don't get paid for any of this, and I try to appease all the best I can. I guess the question now is who is it I need to appease. 10 years with this has maybe taken my toll, so if any of you think or want to deal with what I do on a nearly daily basis, let me know. 73 Brian / wa5am __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

If you've just cleared out a bunch of email from other lists or groups and then respond to something here, it's an easy mistake to make. I still screw up now and then, but have gotten better at it over the years. The approach here is to force a reply to the entire list assuming that everyone should see it, and with that comes the inevitable fact that it's gonna force a number of replies here that you don't want to see or even have no relevance. Still, it has to be pretty frustrating to have just put out recent announcements about this (along with regular reminders) only to have it happen again, and again. It's been this way as long as I can remember, back into the 90s. We have 'quiet' spells, then it seems like a torrent of replies to the list that were meant to be private. I'm wondering how many are new or infrequent posters? If I lived closer Brian, I'd come over for a visit to do the math with you, equipped with appropriate arithmetic-enhancing beverage. Brian, Personally, I think you're doing a hell of a good job. To have organization and any degree of sanity you must have rules and they must be followed. You can't please everyone and I think you have found a happy median that is not too difficult to follow. Of course, there will always be the occasional slip, I've sure made my share. RE: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
I normally don't like to get involved in this kind of thing but will put in my 2 cents this time. I have to agree that it would be much simpler to have the reflector set up with the reply to and reply to all to work like most all other reflectors are set up. That, in my opinion, would solve most of the problems. I think this was debated long ago and it was decided that both replies should go to the reflector so that the list doesn't miss anything. Well this is what happens. Most people try to do the right thing, but don't realize at the time what will happen. I think the warnings about don't reply to ads on the list about equal the number of violations. So that doesn't save much archive space either. Concerning extra stuff getting on the list with these replies, It seems to me that there is much more junk on the list about bashing the ARRL or something else that seems to go on and on, compared to a few replies to for sale items. Of course maybe that is what this list is destined for rather than good AM discussions. I about wear out the delete key with this junk and have come close to unsubscribing from the list many times. The for sale replies are small compared to the rest of the junk posts. 73 Gary K4FMX -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:amradio- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Edward B Richards Sent: Friday, February 29, 2008 10:49 AM To: amradio@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST} I am purposely sending this to the list so others see how I feel about the situation. [AMRadio] ADMIN NOTICE, PLEASE READ
With the controversy about the Reply/Reply All buttons, I thought I would explain to all of you why they are configured as they are presently. A couple of years ago the list was having trouble with a similar problem that had to do with personal replies being sent to the list. They were personal messages intended for one person only. Brian instituted a discussion about the problem and how to configure the buttons. The subscribers overwhelmingly decided to configure them as they are now. Their feeling was that the Reply button should go to the entire list and the Reply All button would go to the list as well as the sender. Now I can't tell you why the people who responded decided to do this, I can only tell you that is what the majority decided. After considering all input, Brian configured the buttons as requested, so that is why they work in the fashion they do. Recently, the admin people have had some discussion about this considering the recent problem. Currently, if you hit the Reply All button, you will see all addresses you are sending your message to and you can just click on the addressee you wish to delete and hit your delete key until only the sender's address is left. Brian asked for input on this issue and I urge you to respond. Since most of the traffic on the list is appropriate not much has to be done . But we have had a couple of incidents where we have had to intervene, which caused some controversy. If you will express your opinion, the administration will consider all input and make a decision that takes into account your desires and what is the easiest path for us. I have been urging you individually about the For Sale ads and all I have written or call have been understanding and congenial, and I appreciate your responses. I take it upon myself to read each message for appropriate content and, when I am not interested in the topic it is very boring. However, I do enjoy all posts, particularly the technical discussions. Remember guys and gals, keep your posts appropriate and on topic. Read the rules at the link at the bottom of this message and follow them and post your input so Brian can make an informed decision. Guilty as charged ! Sorry guys, I saw a 51j-4 for $350 within driving distance and hit that reply button. The message went to the list and not the seller. Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
Brian et al; Perhaps it is only my server but when I try to put my address in the body of the text, it puts it in blue which triggers a change to HTML which the reflector rejected. I am not computer literate and had to send the post to a friend of mine in Israel who deleted the HTML so the reflector would accept it. It turns out that if JUNO sees a color or change of font and some other things, it changes to HTML. I am not smart enough to know what to do. In the future I will spell out the address instead of using the @ symbol if that is OK with the moderator. For instance: zuu6k at juno.com. However, people cannot just click on it as a link. Maybe I just won't post any more ads to this reflector. This will hurt the other members more than me. It will deny them access to my items for sale (like new tubes for 1/2 price) while I can continue to sell on other reflectors. I do want to say that I appreciate the use of the reflector and the work that the moderators do. It is just that people don't like to be threatened, including me. Thank you. 73, Ed Richards K6UUZ. Re: [AMRadio] ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS
I would highly recommend that everyone who subscribes to this list opt for the Digest Mode. That way, you receive your messages in batches, not as a separate e-mail for each message. It causes a LOT less clutter in your in-box and makes keeping up with the list more manageable. I have now switched to the Digest Mode for all my e-mail lists. When I hit reply, the message is addressed to the entire list. If I want to reply to the sender only, I copy his/her e-mail address from the header of his posting and paste it into the To: address box, after highlighting amradio @mailman.qth.net and clicking paste. That automatically deletes the reflector address from the send list. Occasionally I forget to paste in the Subject line and it appears as Re: AM Digest... but I try to remember to type or paste in the specific subject line. I don't want to see the WANTED and FOR SALE messages disappear from the list. I have acquired loads of radio literature and parts from the ads here and from the AM Forum. This is especially true now that the pickings at hamfests is getting slimmer by the year and hamfests are becoming less and less cost-effective for acquiring stuff. I don't regularly check the Boatanchors, QTH.com and other lists, plus I like the idea of having the AM community get the first shot at the goodies before the bottom-eaters get wind of it. Eliminating the buy/sell/trade messages would greatly reduce the usefulness of this list to me, and I am sure for many others. My biggest gripe is when people reply to a message and re-send the entire string of preceeding messages in the thread along with their current posting. It is a simple matter to highlight and delete everything in the previously-sent text except those lines that specifically refer to the subject at hand. [AMRadio] FOR SALE: Multi-Elmac AF-68 PS2-V Power Supply
Selling separately or as a combo. I'm selling so I can build up something with a little more power (probably start working on my Class-E rig again). AF-68 - Very nice and complete, purchased from an estate sale a few weeks ago. It has some chassis damage on the lower right corner but otherwise very clean. Top of the deck needs cleaning however. Modulator bias battery was removed by the previous owner and wired to the unused pin on the power connector. I was going to replace this with the more common Zener diode mod but never got that far. I have two brand new Sovtek 6L6GB's that I will be including with the rig. The Sylvania tubes that came with the rig arrived with cracked bases. PS-2V - This is the matching power supply for the AF-67 or AF68 and works perfectly without a spec of dirt anywhere on the chassis.The optional relay circuit to engage HV when PTT is engaged has been wired in and working fine. Includes cable assembly for AF-67 or AF-68 rigs. I have wired it for the rig but the harness has no provision for external bias supply as I was going to remove the mod to get the power from the unused pin. Pics: AF-68 - http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/Elmac/AF-68/ PS-2V Pics - These are not recent pictures, these were taken when I bought the unit. I have since removed the wrongly implemented relay circuit and extra transformer that was strapped on the top. http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/Elmac/PS-2V-1.jpg http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/Elmac/PS-2V-2.jpg http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/Elmac/PS-2V-5.jpg Prices include ground shipping in the CONUS: AF-68 - $135.00 PS-2V - $175.00 COMBO - $280.00 PLEASE REPLY DIRECT - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH (FN42gx) Contest Manager, TARA Skirmish __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
The choice to make the default reply to the AMRadio mailing list the list itself was the right way to go. It maximizes responses to the whole list, rather than to individuals, and encourages discussion. Other mailing lists which have other goals might chose to do it the other way. I certainly hope we don't modify the list configuration (which impacts everyone) for the sake of a few people who can't operate their email programs. Various systems, and various senders of email, define the Reply-to address in different ways. It is always up to *you* to make sure your message is going to the right place. Double-checking to whom your email is addressed is an important part of using email! To much trouble to cut and paste an address or two? Baloney. Inconvinient to glance up at the TO addresses before you hit send? Baloney. If either of those are too much trouble, don't try running vintage gear that you have to manually tune up. It'll be too much trouble. So be it if some people slip and the list get's the response to a for sale post; kaka happens. If the for sale posts are nixed, then the majority will pay for the crimes of the few. Brian, make a decision and stick with it -- you're doing a great job. Expect people to slip up from time to time. Ban those that flaunt the list's rules on a consistent basis. Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
I've never really seen this as a problem. It doesn't bother me in the least that some replies to ads are posted to the whole group. Since that is default reply to method, it's going to happen. I have to sort through about 800 emails a day, so a few more, one way or the other, just doesn't matter. If you're going to make a policy, then put the responsibility on the sellers to post adequate notice about replying off-reflector. If one of them won't follow the rules, then ban them from selling on the reflector. Don't penalize everyone for the transgressions of a few. As far as buyer replies go, just assume that some won't read every word in the ad, some will forget by the time they hit send, and some will just hit send to fast. No big deal. This thread has already generated more traffic than ad responses in recent history. Or maybe I just noticed them more because of the yelling (capital letters) in the subject line. 73, Clay W7CE __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Observations: Most of us here would spend hours trying to figure out which resistor in a SP 600 has gone bad. Most here would spend hours learning what all the buttons on a new fangled rig do. But we can't figure out how to use this system or is it we just don't wish too? We can't copy and paste? It's a waste of time? BS! This reflector is free for all to use. The only cost to everyone is use the system we have and follow the rules. How can anyone complain about something that is free? This is a fraternity and to make this site work we all need to be flexible to make the site better. Why not try and help Brian out by following the rules and being more flexible? Brian you have taken the time to offer the AM community a resource. You have two options. Spend your time making this resource better or spend your time trying to please individual feelings. If you cater to the few then the masses will suffer. One other thought Brian I offer from experience on AMfone. Those that have the most to complain about usually have nothing to offer the community. No loss. So now that I have pissed off most of the whiners I say, shut up , stop whining and get a life.
