Don’t panic guys, QSL.NET is merging with QTH.COM this will be an even bigger
and better site. I am approaching my 65th birthday and it is time to let
younger minds continue. There will NO change in any list other than a small
outage as we move the data from Delaware to Lansing, Michigan. Scott KA9FOX
has an established track record with his QTH.COM site or I would not have gone
this direction.

After many years of great service to hams, Al Waller, K3TKJ, has decided to
retire from the qthqth.net service. This is where ouAMRadiodioAMSwapwap) lists
are based. I know he has surely spent many hours, and money out of his own
pocket providing this service to hams. It would not have been possible for Al
to do this had it not been for the donations (since everything was basically
free) he also received from fellow hams using hwebspaceace, email lists, etc.

It appears that Al will be turning everything over to another person that I do
not know. From the sound of it, things will continue as usual for our list.
Speaking of, tAMRadiodio list has been going now for nearly 12 years!!

Just in case, I do plan to save a list of all our subscribers (fAMRadiodio
aAMSwapwap) so that I can immediately start up my own list server. This is a
worst case scenario, however, if I do have to setup a list server, please be
prepared to consider a donation, as my web host only allows limited traffic on
a list server, as is, without additional money.

If things with tqthqth.net server go as Al projects, I would like to ask (as we
always have) that members please consider donating to the new list server owner.

Details from Al are at this link:

Al, if you read this, thank you for all the time, effort, and personal funding
you have contributed for all these years. We will miss your personal service,
but hope you fulfilldreams you could not see achieve while keeping all the man

What is the diameter of the insulator you need? I have one that looks just like the good one for the back modulator tube. It's in the Bauer 707 I'm rebuilding, and I will not need it in the final "product". It was a feed through to the built in dummy load. The one I have is 1.125 dia. at the base with a slight draft angle to the top, and about .75 deep (panel to end of ceramic) looks to be 10-32 threaded rod.

A safety interlock switch for the rear left door and the ceramic insulator
that brings the HV to one of the modulator tubes.

Re: [AMRadio] Re: Broadcast transmitter rescue Update

2008-11-24 Thread Al Waller, K3TKJ

As you might know this is my 3rd rescue. I got a Gates BC1-E from WDOV
in Dover Delaware and an RCA BT1-R from WILM in Wilmington, Delaware. I
never thought it would be much fun to play with one of these at home
since I do it for a living.. but these old ones are pretty sexy
compared to the new stuff I work on. I am really into this 20V project,
I can't wait to get it on 1885 and get some signal reports.

There was an ATU there that was in 2 20V cabinets but they were destined
to be reused at some other Clear Channel site. I asked about the Collins
FM TX but it was also not available. I tried real hard to get them to
give me the audio chain and the modulation monitor but no luck there
either. I did get several Solid State 872,866,5U4 replacement modules
that I will use for trading. I want Mercury vapor rectifiers just for
the show aspect LOL. The studio board for this TX was a PRE Airwave 12
all solid state and space age looking if you have never seen one.

My 20V was built in September 1960 and went on the air in May 1961. It
was last retubed in 1976 and that was when the SS rectifiers were
installed. It has been an AUX TX for the last 10 years and has not been
powered up since it was retired.

The station was WTFX 610khz and was located on 40 acres W of Winchester,
Va just off RT50. 500w day/night 4 tower directional. CCRadio sold the
40 acres to a developer and the station went QRT last Monday. Friday
they dropped the 4 300+ towers and bulldozers are there now ready to
know the TX building and old studio down.

I have a manual REV 6 that looks to be the correct one. Lots of subtle
changes in the pictures I see depending on the build date of the 20V.

Only issue I hae is a missing insulator on the modulator chassis,
someone fixed it with RTV Other than that it is just dirty.

Al

Nice set of pictures, Al.

Someone elected to use the JAN version of the Eimac 4-400, at least a couple of
examples out of the four in there. So what if the tubes are 20+ years old.

Did you catch any other loot out of there? Nice that they sent along some
spare tube stock, that's always helpful.

Let me know if you've got the book for that transmitter -- I may have one or a
copy around here somewhere.

So what becomes of the station? Is this also a studio site that they are
tearing down to produce more toxic mortgages? It would be way cool if the
station also has, say, a Collins tube board or something from the period to
bolt up to the 20V2.

[AMRadio] Broadcast transmitter rescue Update

2008-11-22 Thread Al Waller
I left the house at 6AM this morning and drove 200 miles to Winchester,
Virginia to retrieve the Collins 20V-2 that was given to me. The station
went QRT Monday and yesterday all 4 320' towers were dropped by cutting a
guy anchor. I was sad to see the destruction of a 60 year old AM site just
so a housing project can be started. The 20V-2 is in fine shape, a few
obvious thing need to be addressedand it has 48 years of dirt to be
dealt with.

Here are some pictures of today's exploits and I will post some more
tomorrow after I unload the truck and trailer.

http://www.dxham.com/2008-11-22/

Notice the nice wall of Collins 2 Antenna tuning units in 20v cabinets, the
20v-2, the far end is a Collins FM transmitter all tubes.

While I was there today I was offered a Harris MW-5 AM TX ( 5KW Ceramic
tubes, Solid state exciter ). It is up for adoption if anyone has the
desire. I have no interest in it. TX is located near Washington, DC it is
BIG and HEAVY.
