On Thursday we went back with a fourth man and a trailer and loaded the cabinet and brought it home. This rig has been properly maintained throughout its years of service and will require little to get it on the air. The output configuration is already a pi-L net with an adjustable 2nd harmonic filter connected between the two sections to ground. Converting this to ham service will not be a problem. A complete set of manuals was included. Since I have a new T368 exciter I am even looking to use that and bandswitching the whole thing to a least 160 to 40. Re: [AMRadio] Knight 50 CW transmitter for sale
I forwarded the message to AM Swap. Joe W4AAB John Lawson writes: (copied to boatanchors) Recently I got in a few Boatanchor Items - among them is this cute little Knight (Allied Radio) 50 Watt CW transmitter - 80-40-20-15-10 - single 807 final. It is in pretty good cosmetic shape, copper chassis and case, a few very minor dings - panel is good, some screws missing here and there. Not a junker or a 'shed special'. The 5U4 was broken; I replaced it. The 6AG7 and 807 are as-received.. It had several broken wires from the front panel switches to the chassis coils - whoever originally built it didn't leave much slack. Also the Grid/Plate switch was (I think) replaced, the plate wires were reversed. Probably all the work on the switch caused the broken wires - a couple of which were just not obvious... anyway it's working now - I have a 40M rock in it and it tunes and loads, making about 35 watts at '200' on the (awful, undamped) Shurite meter. I have a classic J-38 key mounted on a small piece of masonite to throw in... it'll be just like Jr. High SChool in 1962... ;} I have some digital pix I took that I can send if you wish - I have downloaded the two-page description and schematic from BAMA (as jpegs) and a printout of that will also be included. Re: [AMRadio] What is the typical output of a 6LQ6?
I would rather run two 6LQ6's on 6m, as the interelectrode capacitance would probably be too high on 6 with 3 tubes.I had one once with a 6JG6 taking 2 watts and driving a pair of 6LQ6/6JE6's to 70 watts out on 6m.That was on ssb. Re: [AMRadio] Re: ICE STORM
I realize that one could use one smaller, but if you got a 30 amp on hand, crank it up. I have been doing this electronics thing for 35+ years, so familiar with turns ratio, etc.It is good to have things like variacs, like the one I got from WA2RQY recently. Nice to put in 0-140 and get out 0-260 VAC!! Joe W4AAB Joe, This is a great idea but the variac can be much smaller. The current needed is reduced by the turns ratio of that filament transformer. If the primary is 120 vac, then the turns ratio is 120/5 or 24. Therefore, if we take the 30 amps and divide that by 24 we get 1.25 amperes. The variac only needs to be rated for a little over one ampere. I might be tempted to use a light bulb in series with that transformer primary where the current to the load will vary by the bulb wattage rating, and the load resistance. Remember that the resistance of the bulb is very non linear where the cold filament has a much lower resistance than a hot filament. So I'd start with a 100 watt bulb and see if that works. I would not go over 150 watts with the bulb rating though. Having a clamp on AC current probe would be handy in a case like this. I picked another solution to the ice storms. Back in 1976 I moved to central Texas. Getting any ice or snow here is pretty rare. ;-) Regards, Jim WD5JKO __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body. __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Antique Electronic Supply - http://www.tubesandmore.com/ click on the vacuum tubes line on the left. 3 - Are there any suggestions as to what the caps or other key components should be replaced with? (modern day equivalent) Many capacitor values may not be available anymore. But, typically by the 20% rule, you can get away with a value that's off by about 10 or 20% with no problems. Just make sure it has the same or better voltage rating, than the one you're replacing. You can try it with the original paper electrolytics in it, but more than likely, they're dried out/shot, and will need replacing. BTW, you'll be surpised just how much smaller than the originals, todays electrolytics are - as much as 50% smaller! As for the carbon comp resistors in your DX-100 - it depends upon how much they've been subjected to heat. They may still be good. If they are bad, in most cases, today's metal film resistors will be fine. Once again, they will look puny, compared to the old ones. Re: [AMRadio] Hamfest creeps
Some of these guys I see at hamfests could inspire several Bud Light Great Men of Genius radio ads. NOT!! I turn 55 this year, and I am trying to lose weight and stay active so I don't have to ride around in a cart. I know there are some people who are truly handicapped because of injuries or whatever, but too many of us hams eat that civic center food and spend too much time sitting down. I want to still be around for several more years messing with this radio stuff. I concur with a lot of your comments, Rick. It is too easy now to get a license. Are these guys really hams or want to be hams and CBers? I can remember not so long ago when a ham radio operator was a very well respected member of society who had the ability to perform magic with radios and considered to be very bright. Do you suppose the CB revolution and all of the riff-raff (not to say there weren't and are a lot of good CB operators) it exposed society to has forever tainted the image of a good, CLEAN and HONEST ham radio operator? What a shame if it has. Rick/K5IAR For several years I carried a VHS camera to Dayton and other hamfests and made it a point to tape those types of losers. Then replayed at various club meetings, etc. A friend once stated that if a bomb landed on the Dayton Convention Center the nations gene pool would be dramatically improved! One time at Dayton I had several tables set up and another ham helping. One fat creep came by in a motorized wheel chair and he was noticed helping himself to my items. We both went and confronted him and he started making a scene. It ended when we flipped him out of his chair and all sorts of goodies rolled out. Security called a cop over and they hauled him off. Re: [AMRadio] Old Novice Days
Did more research. The date was November 15th, 1972. The FCC changed the 40m Novice band, they authorized the use of VFO's by Novices, and Novices got 28.1-28.2 CW. I remember borrowing a VF-1 to go on the borrowed HW-16 as the 40m crystals I had were useless.Had a note in my logbook about changes. I, personally, don't ever remember the Novice band on 40m being as high as 7200kc -- 73 = Best Regards, -Geoff/W5OMR Geoff, I think you are right about it being only 50kc wide. I don't know when they changed but in the early 60's it was from 7150 to 7200. My one and only crystal then was 7175 kc. You young kids probably don't remember that. :) Of course, there are some rigs and receivers (I'm thinking Heathkit) that had on a glass drum the 'fone segments in a heavy(ier) black line, and 7.2 to 7.3Mc were bold'ed. It couldn't have been long (relativly speaking) from when Phone operation was permitted on 40m. The only Class A bands were 80, 20 and 10m then. 11m was there (don't remember a lot about it, other than it was a ham band at one time, and probably the best DX band hams had) and this was before 15m. Interesting discussion. I wonder if anyone has a time-line on when the major changes in Ham Radio took place, in regards to rules/operating privledges took place? 40m was a CW only band after WWII until the 50's. 75w DC Input was the Novice power limit. 1kW DC Input (which is MUCH easier to measure than PEP but that's another whole thread in/of itself ;-) for Generals and above, regardless of mode. I've visited a few SSB'er hamshacks lately and some (not all) are running amps that are (according to the supposed 'peak-reading' wattmeters) running 2kW PLUS in output power. (Not that it *bothers* me, just an observation). I wonder if this is something that's being done all over, or just a 'specific group' of guys who are running the illegal limit? C'mon, man... a pair of 3CX800A7's? That's 1600w of dissapation, fer-cryin'out-loud! The right voltage on the plates would make 'em sing to -at least- 2kW pep output. And some of these dual 4-1000 homebrew amps I hear on the air? Isn't it the Alpha 8877 amp that runs 2 (not one, but *TWO*) 8877's in the output, EACH with a plate dissapation rating of 1,500w? *shrug* It's nice to remember the old days. And, yes. the times, they are a'changing. It's just that I just don't necessarily think some of us hams are changing in a good/positive way. The Law is Always The Law. It doesn't bend because you run a different mode. She is WB5BBF, recently upgraded to general and renewed her ticket for another 10 years. Even then, I *thought* I recalled the novice frequencies on 40m being from 7100 ~ 7150kc. The fone band was the same as it is now... 7150 ~ 7300kc. Are you sure your first QSO was on 7160kc? ;-) 73 = Best Regards, -Geoff/W5OMR (/5 New Orleans, LA) __ AMRadio mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net
Re: [AMRadio] Modern Equivalent of 35T and 203A
Thanks, Don. I have one 838. Was going to look it up and see what it was for. That circuit just looks like a winner. Of course, with my newly acquired supply of 4-125's, I will go that route. Still looking for mod transformer.Again, thanks to all who responded!! Joe W4AAB Donald Chester writes: You might be able to use a pair of 838's or 805's in place of the 203A's. The 838's have the same pin connections, while the 805's bring the plate lead out of a plate cap on top of the tube; otherwise they are essentially the same tube, with the same filament current as the 203A. The 838 and 805 run zero bias up to about 1000 volts on the plate. Above that, they require a few volts of bias to keep the resting plate current at a reasonable value. Also, a 211 is a near-identical tube, but it is lower mu, and would require larger grid voltage swing and more bias, so your present audio driver might not work satisfactorily with this tube. I have seen 203A's advertised from time to time, not any more overpriced than other triode transmitting tubes in this era of audiophools with an excessive supply of oxygen-free money but lacking in fully oxygenated brains.
