Does anybody know if Heathkit Daystom and Heath products sold in England,
were actually 'kit-i-fied' in England? I have a DX100 coming eventually,
and the only on line book I could find online now was for a DX100U, by
Heath Daystom of England. Reading through it, has all English
terminology, valve for tube, tag for tube socket pin, etc., and all the
hardware is in British sizes, like 4BA instead of 4-40. Did Heath do a
great job of making exportable gear, or was there a mirror subsidiary in G
 land?

To all who responded, commented, offered help, and laughed. On Wednesday
afternoon I went to the station with two of my men. There I met Mike
Holderfield N4RMS who is the chief engineer. We spent about two hours
removing all the heavy iron and loading it in my covered pickup. Some
one had marked all the leads with Brady wire markers so all we had to do
is remove them. On Thursday we went back with a fourth man and a trailer
and loaded the cabinet and brought it home. This rig has been properly
maintained throughout its years of service and will require little to
get it on the air. The output configuration is already a pi-L net with
an adjustable 2nd harmonic filter connected between the two sections to
ground. Converting this to ham service will not be a problem. A complete
set of manuals was included. Since I have a new T368 exciter I am even
looking to use that and bandswitching the whole thing to a least 160 to
40. I have many projects to work on but this one some how got to the top
of the list. Since the tubes are mounted right behind the front panel a
viewing window will be installed and one more high powered AM rig will

Daytime on 80 meters, normal people seem to be on, but at night, I often
hear only the southern hate nets.

If you listen at night, you would think the US is filled with ex cb, ex

people who live in trailers and hate almost everything, talking about

I am surprised that any AM operation is possible on 80 meters at night

CW can already be utilized between 3600-3700Kc, limited only by license

 What is their point?

Reserved space for operators who seldom showed up was the reason the FCC
scaled back the size of the reservation, to more closely match the level
 of
 activity.

But to Don't point, ues, it's up to everyone to populate a clear spot on

of antenna might work. But I understand your situation with the antenna
part. If I ever put the DX-60 back on, I am going to build an external plate

modulation.

Next question.

Many of us have low powered AM transmitters like the small Heath DX series with some form of screen modulation.

These transmitters previously did OK on 40M and up. 15M and 10M don't really require high power.

But what about 20M. It seems to me that to play on 20M a GOOD linear is required for just about any small or medium powered transmitter.

I sure wish I had saved my old log book.
I remember 40 meter round tables getting to be 7 or 8 people at once, with
people coming and going all day, and there being 3 different qso's on 3
different frequencies at the same time, till the broadcast came in.
The page in the log book would have long lists of calls that came and went
over time, many people were regulars every weekend.

I know there must be hundreds of calls I dont hear anymore, where did they
go?
I have my old card file, with hundreds of people I have not heard for many
years.

Did they all just chuck the ham hobby?

Some interesting stuff in the card file, like KF9KU, Gill, in Millwalkee
Wisconson running a ranger, or Jeff,W4OMX in Virginia who used to run
Gonset G76, K4HOL, Ralph, North Carolina, with a globe king, why dont i
ever hear Globe kings anymore?

What happened to Herb, K2JVM in pen yan?
Bruce, WA3JVJ used to be on with his 'wall of sound' but took his antenna
down to put siding on his house and never got on again, the wall of sound
has been silent for about 15 years...

What happened to Bill, W3DUQ?

I hear Bill, W8VYZ on 40 meters often, he sounds like he is about 120
years old, and has always sounded that way for the last 30 years!

The way things are going, I am surprised there is much of a market for old
AM gear, and dont hear many people running the old stuff.

Hi Bernie,

I have a pretty good source for these due to my present job. I also
rescued a Harris FM-3K but thought better than to announce that on the AM
list grin. I hope to get this one shined up and on the air over the
winterlike I need another project.

Last year I rescued a Gates BC-1 and an RCA BT-1 that I passed on to
WA3GGM
as he had a passion for these that I did not. However his enthusiasm
has
rubbed off on me and I have located a Collins 20V-2. This one will be
mine
after restoration and conversion. It was the backup box at a 500w AM
station
that went QRT last Monday. So Saturday morning I will go get it and
haul it

home. thinking of what to tell the wife as I type this.

So my question to the group. Who is the Collins 20v-2 guru and how much
will

be involved to move it from 610khz to 1885khz.

4. FAA registration
5.. Lighting as instructed

(copied to boatanchors)

Recently I got in a few Boatanchor Items - among them is this cute little
Knight (Allied Radio) 50 Watt CW transmitter - 80-40-20-15-10 - single 807
final.

It is in pretty good cosmetic shape, copper chassis and case, a few very
minor dings - panel is good, some screws missing here and there. Not a
junker or a 'shed special'. The 5U4 was broken; I replaced it. The 6AG7
and 807 are as-received..

It had several broken wires from the front panel switches to the chassis
coils - whoever originally built it didn't leave much slack. Also the
Grid/Plate switch was (I think) replaced, the plate wires were reversed.
Probably all the work on the switch caused the broken wires - a couple of
which were just not obvious... anyway it's working now - I have a 40M
rock in it and it tunes and loads, making about 35 watts at '200' on the
(awful, undamped) Shurite meter.

I have a classic J-38 key mounted on a small piece of masonite to throw
in... it'll be just like Jr. High SChool in 1962...   ;}

I have some digital pix I took that I can send if you wish - I have
downloaded the two-page description and schematic from BAMA (as jpegs) and
a printout of that will also be included.

Asking somewhere in the $75 range: re-live your Novice years again, minus
the zits and the orthodontia

Will pack obsessively and ship to the US ONLY.

Paypal is preferred - or MO or cash or maybe personal check (with
FBI/CIA/TSA full backround scan). :)

PLEASE REPLY DIRECTLY TO ME, not back to the whole list.

Re: [AMRadio] What is the typical output of a 6LQ6?

2008-07-13 Thread Joe Crawford
I would rather run two 6LQ6's on 6m, as the interelectrode capacitance would
probably be too high on 6 with 3 tubes.I had one once with a 6JG6 taking 2
watts and driving a pair of 6LQ6/6JE6's to 70 watts out on 6m.That was on
ssb. On AM, I would expect no more than 50 watts and cool it well with a
squirrel cage fan. YMMV.

Has anyone built a linear using a 6C21 or 750TH, I found one of these,
sadly heater o/c in a hamfest recently and thought it might make a great
project if I could find a bit more about it and a working example, so if
you have a 6C21 or a 750TH in your junk box then I would be interested in
making it into a project amp. It would go well with my BC-610, ART-13 and

I wonder if the writer of the original considered this usual approach of
300-2.7 Kc most likely came about from the practice of using the same
filter to select the sideband in the exciter and defining the IF bandwidth
of the receiver.

Rather than on any real spectrum efficiency considerations.

As the the 30 Kc wide AM signals probably another case of the
relatively

poor design of the modern receiver.
I'll keep using my good old Collins receivers.

remember the black Ford sedans, with the loop antennas on the roofs,
cruising around the neighborhood listening for the 455 kc IFs of
unlicensed radio receivers.

If you had a license for your address, that was okay. But, if a 455 IF

a knock on your door, and a summons would be written.

recently I purchased a transmitter--home brew. There is no designation of
what frequency band it operates. It is a plate modulated 807, crystal
control (oscillator tube missing). The output tank has some rather small
tuning capacitors and a air wound coil about an inch in diameter and maybe
eight turns at about half inch spacing with a tap a couple turns from one
end.

Any ideas? Thanks

Re: [AMRadio] Re: ICE STORM

2008-03-09 Thread Joe Crawford
I realize that one could use one smaller, but if you got a 30 amp on hand,
crank it up. I have been doing this electronics thing for 35+ years, so
familiar with turns ratio, etc.It is good to have things like variacs, like
the one I got from WA2RQY recently. Nice to put in 0-140 and get out 0-260
VAC!!

  Joe W4AAB

Joe,

This is a great idea but the variac can be much smaller. The current
needed is reduced by the turns ratio of that filament transformer. If the
primary is 120 vac, then the turns ratio is 120/5 or 24. Therefore, if we
take the 30 amps and divide that by 24 we get 1.25 amperes. The variac
only needs to be rated for a little over one ampere. I might be tempted to
use a light bulb in series with that transformer primary where the current
to the load will vary by the bulb wattage rating, and the load resistance.
Remember that the resistance of the bulb is very non linear where the cold
filament has a much lower resistance than a hot filament. So I'd start
with a 100 watt bulb and see if that works. I would not go over 150 watts
with the bulb rating though. Having a clamp on AC current probe would be
handy in a case like this.

I picked another solution to the ice storms. Back in 1976 I moved to
central Texas. Getting any ice or snow here is pretty rare. ;-)

Jim

Hi everybody,

Hi Bob,

I recently had a DX-100 fall into my lap.

My questions:

1 - Has anyone created a recap/mod kit for this? The radio needs a
recap plus the mods that are posted on the Intraweb. :-)

2- Any good sourced for tubes?

Umm here are a couple of places I've used:

A. RF parts - http://www.rfparts.com/tubetran.html

the only downer - $25 minimum order

B. Radio daze - http://www.radiodaze.com/

click on the components box, and scroll down to the vacuum
tubes/valves

line and click on that

C. Antique Electronic Supply - http://www.tubesandmore.com/

click on the vacuum tubes line on the left.

3 - Are there any suggestions as to what the caps or other key
components should be replaced with? (modern day equivalent)

Many capacitor values may not be available anymore. But, typically by the
20% rule, you can get away with a value that's off by about 10 or 20%
with
no problems. Just make sure it has the same or better voltage rating,
than

the one you're replacing. You can try it with the original paper
electrolytics in it, but more than likely, they're dried out/shot, and
will

need replacing. BTW, you'll be surpised just how much smaller than the
originals, todays electrolytics are - as much as 50% smaller! As for the
carbon comp resistors in your DX-100 - it depends upon how much they've
been
subjected to heat. They may still be good. If they are bad, in most
cases,
today's metal film resistors will be fine. Once again, they will look
puny,

compared to the old ones. Places I've used for components:

Mouser Electronics - http://www.mouser.com/
Digikey - http://www.digikey.com/
Newark Electronics - http://www.newark.com/

Slang is slang; spell it or pronounce anyway you want.

Of course, one could also ask why some don't use a spell checker.

Subject: FS: VIKING 6N2 XMTR

FOR SALE: A nice E.F. Johnson Viking 6N2 transmitter. This is a 100 watt
6 and
2 meter transmitter which uses the power supply and modulator of the
Viking I or
II, Valiant, or Ranger. It is complete with all the tubes, an original
manual,
and a spare final tube (5894), The top of the chassis is dusty, underside
nice
and clean. Three of the knobs are missing the small white insert
(pointer) but
the knobs are all correct and the original crystal cover is also there.
About

half the screws that attach the front and real panels to the cabinet are
missing. The cabinet itself has some wear on the corners and a few light
scratches on top, but no dents or gouges. The switches are tarnished and
need

cleaning. I don't have a companion transmitter to try this with. I made
resistance checks at the tube sockets and found that everything was within
about
20 to 25% of what it should be. The manual says they should measure
within 20%.
most resistances were coming out on the high side. Shipping weight would
be
about 25 pounds. Sell for $95.00 plus shipping. Sorry, no overseas sales
or

shipping.

Thanks for looking,
George

Nothing too specific, just some material for learning about pre-solid
state circuits and design as it may help reduce some of my stupid
questions I frequently spam the reflector with. For the older ARRL
Handbook, I was looking for common operating practices from back then
and project articles.

I just ordered a 1961 ARRL Handbook and the 1946 Radio Handbook was
only $5 delivered so I figured it'd be a decent start. I'll look
around for a 14th or 16th edition as well though.

The original relay probably pooped out and was substituted with a six volt
DC relay. The extra connector on the end of the cable is most likely for
the mobile receiver or front end converter. I got a bad feeling that the
AF 54 67 and 68 will be going up in price soon due to the demand for
quality plate modulated stuff.

Update on my PS-2V..

The relay kit installed is not the original PTR-1 kit that was put
together by Multi-Products. This relay is a Western Electric 24V unit
where the original supplied was a 24V Potter Brumfield unit. The
relay is supposed to be powered by the 24V tap coming off the filament
transformer. However, this installation is powered by the dedicated
6.3V transformer that has been mounted to the top of the plate tranny.
There are then three diodes and a big 1000 uF capacitor in between
the 6.3V tranny and the relay. I don't understand why it was done
like this at all.

crystal oscillator driving a 6146 and screen modulated by the other
half of the 12AT7. I'd kind of like to check out this rig if anyone
could help me find a copy of the article.

I dont operate it either, I have nothing to talk about on ssb.
I never homebrewed any gear for ssb.

I also find it anoying to listen to mostly, although the new icom makes
it sound quite good.
I learned something tuning around with the rig on ssb, the auto
notch works great, and will follow a jammer/carrier all around and notch

it

out
without hardly any degridation of the received audio.
Not sure what FMing would do, but trying to jam someone on
ssb with a carrier is futile with the new rigs.

Maybe I should listen around on 40 meters weekend mornings
of ssb and see if anyone interesting to talk to is on.

I did rtty a long time ago with a model 15, and a vic20 and microlog air

one

card, never did sstv, hate 2 meters and vhf stuff in general.
Never did digital or sattelite stuff, moon bounce, etc.

I am trying to get back up to speed on CW, and am building a homebrew
tube

type
cw tranciever, that should be fun.
Anyone know where I could get 454 and 456 KHz xtals for my bfo???

I enjoy being seen as someone who won't run SSB. Of
course I'm not that serious about it, not as if it
would violate religion or something, but there's a
certain comfort I get from authentically representing
AM as a preferred mode and activity in the radio
 hobby.

In order to do that, I devote my available radio time
to AM, and like it that way.

On the other hand, I have taken part in emergency
communications events (hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and
some Atlantic storms) which are on SSB and involve my
use of a contemporary FT101EE. It's just that none
of my AM friends know about this.

 That's probably a good thing.

Plastic pill bottles have excellent Q. Free at home or real cheap at a

You can buy tube bases, so you dont have to break tubes.
Antique electronic supply was selling them last I looked,
along with coil forms, rf chokes, tubes, sockets, knobs,
and so on.

PVC pipe makes nice coil forms, but to get the best Q, the old B+W
coil stock can not be beat.

the

sound of breaking glass, now where's all those old dead octals gone?
Seriously though you don't have to use old tube bases but you might have

recalculate the coil dimensions, I wonder if there is a simple

to go with it? 73 Max M0GHQ

Cabin Fever could be seen as a cause as easily as all the political
crap on the TV, radio, online, and so on. Sidebanders, wellthis
gets back to the 'bad apples in every walk of life' comment, so maybe
less likely.

The original point (how we choose to represent amateur radio,
basically) is a good one. It warrants some scrutiny if we wish to
showcase amateur radio in general, and AM specifically to upcoming
generations.

Pointing out the obvious should be simple enough without resorting to
doing so in an elitist or antagonistic way. In the end, people are
free to live their lives as they choose, regardless of how ridiculous
or repulsive we might find it.

I prefer to blame the free choice folks make to live their lives
online instead of getting on the air to actually operate, promote, and
enjoy amateur radio. A recent discussion on 80 meters highlighted how
so many who have all the answers both here and on AMfone
mysteriously never seem to be heard on the air. IMO, that's where the
problem lies: the disconnect between talking about it and actually
doing it.

But then again, you know what they say about opinions (o:

That's sad. Are these guys really hams or want to be hams and CBers? I can
remember not so long ago when a ham radio operator was a very well respected
member of society who had the ability to perform magic with radios and
considered to be very bright. Do you suppose the CB revolution and all of
the riff-raff (not to say there weren't and are a lot of good CB operators)
it exposed society to has forever tainted the image of a good, CLEAN and
HONEST ham radio operator? What a shame if it has.

Rick/K5IAR

For several years I carried a VHS camera to Dayton and other hamfests and
made it a point to tape those types of losers. Then replayed at various club

meetings, etc.

A friend once stated that if a bomb landed on the Dayton Convention Center
the nations gene pool would be dramatically improved!

One time at Dayton I had several tables set up and another ham helping. One
fat creep came by in a motorized wheel chair and he was noticed helping
himself to my items. We both went and confronted him and he started making a

scene. It ended when we flipped him out of his chair and all sorts of
goodies rolled out. Security called a cop over and they hauled him off.

The 10 meter E season has begun.

On Thursday and Friday of this week, I made an AM contact each day
 near 6 PM
on 29.0 with my HTX10. Yesterday, I heard 3 other AM stations, but
 had a
dinner engagement, and was unable to stay near the rig.

Remember to check 29.0 often during the summer E season. Don't just
 listen;
occasionally identify or call cq. If we all only listen, we'll all
 hear
 nothing.

Also remember that if 10 is open even marginly, 15 will also be open.

 See you on the bands.

Re: [AMRadio] Old Novice Days

2005-02-24 Thread Joe Crawford
Did more research. The date was November 15th, 1972. The FCC changed the 40m
Novice band, they authorized the use of VFO's by Novices, and Novices got
28.1-28.2 CW. I remember borrowing a VF-1 to go on the borrowed HW-16 as the
40m crystals I had were useless.Had a note in my logbook about changes. Lots
of changes over the years, but that was the most at one time.

Don Schichler writes:

Joe - I just dug out my musty old 1973 ARRL Handbook, and on page 14 it
shows the Novice band on 7100 to 7150. So that narrows it down to either
late '72 or '73 that it was changed. Seems like it was later than that, but
time flies - hi hi! It's fun to do a little amateur radio research now and
then.

A friend of mine who was active during the gooneybox era on 6 and 2m said
that if you had a real strong signal into someone's receiver, it would cause
the tuning eye tube to go dark. The predecessor of S meters. If you were
real strong, the receiving station would say, You're closing the eye over
here. Kind of like S9 plus a bunch.

Hold off on the thanks... after I read and re-read that, something
didn't look correct...

Let me try again, with these statements that I know (to the best of -my-
current education)
to be fact...

I do not ever, at anytime, remember the Novice CW sub-band of 40m ,
being more than 50kc wide.

I've always known the Novice CW sub-band of 40m to be from 7100 to
7150kc.

There. That's what Ive been -meaning- to say and/or stick with.
I, personally, don't ever remember the Novice band on 40m being as high
as 7200kc

--
73 = Best Regards,
-Geoff/W5OMR

Geoff,

I think you are right about it being only 50kc wide. I don't know when
they changed but in the early 60's it was from 7150 to 7200. My one and
only crystal then was 7175 kc. You young kids probably don't remember
that. :)

Of course, there are some rigs and receivers (I'm thinking Heathkit) that
had on a glass drum the 'fone segments in a heavy(ier) black line, and
7.2 to 7.3Mc were bold'ed. It couldn't have been long (relativly
speaking) from when Phone operation was permitted on 40m. The only Class
A bands were 80, 20 and 10m then. 11m was there (don't remember a lot
about it, other than it was a ham band at one time, and probably the best
DX band hams had) and this was before 15m.

Interesting discussion. I wonder if anyone has a time-line on when the
major changes in Ham Radio took place, in regards to rules/operating
privledges took place?

40m was a CW only band after WWII until the 50's. 75w DC Input was the
Novice power limit. 1kW DC Input (which is MUCH easier to measure than
PEP but that's another whole thread in/of itself ;-) for Generals and
above, regardless of mode.

I've visited a few SSB'er hamshacks lately and some (not all) are running
amps that are (according to the supposed 'peak-reading' wattmeters)
running 2kW PLUS in output power. (Not that it *bothers* me, just an
observation).

I wonder if this is something that's being done all over, or just a
'specific group' of guys who are running the illegal limit?

C'mon, man... a pair of 3CX800A7's? That's 1600w of dissapation,
fer-cryin'out-loud! The right voltage on the plates would make 'em sing
to -at least- 2kW pep output. And some of these dual 4-1000 homebrew amps
I hear on the air? Isn't it the Alpha 8877 amp that runs 2 (not one, but
*TWO*) 8877's in the output, EACH with a plate dissapation rating of
1,500w?

*shrug*

It's nice to remember the old days. And, yes. the times, they are
a'changing. It's just that I just don't necessarily think some of us
hams are changing in a good/positive way.

The Law is Always The Law. It doesn't bend because you run a different
mode. The LEGAL output limit is 1500w PEP.

Re: [AMRadio] Modern Equivalent of 35T and 203A

2005-02-04 Thread Joe Crawford
Thanks, Don. I have one 838. Was going to look it up and see what it was
for. That circuit just looks like a winner. Of course, with my newly
acquired supply of 4-125's, I will go that route. Still looking for mod
transformer.Again, thanks to all who responded!!
 Joe W4AAB

Donald Chester writes:

You might be able to use a pair of 838's or 805's in place of the 203A's.
The 838's have the same pin connections, while the 805's bring the plate
lead out of a plate cap on top of the tube; otherwise they are essentially
the same tube, with the same filament current as the 203A. The 838 and
805 run zero bias up to about 1000 volts on the plate. Above that, they
require a few volts of bias to keep the resting plate current at a
reasonable value.

Also, a 211 is a near-identical tube, but it is lower mu, and would
require larger grid voltage swing and more bias, so your present audio
driver might not work satisfactorily with this tube.

I have seen 203A's advertised from time to time, not any more overpriced
than other triode transmitting tubes in this era of audiophools with an
excessive supply of oxygen-free money but lacking in fully oxygenated
brains.
