Several members of the Gulf Coast Mullet Society Net on 3885 kcs use the
combination of a DX-60 driving a Heath SB-200 and their audio sounds great,
along with some RF punch to boot.

You see, Dave, I told you the Gulf Coast Mullet Society W4CGM would support
you . A bunch of use have already ordered them and one has one built

When are you going to have a travel agency start booking air fares, hotel

I am tickled to death for you. You though you'd be retired by now, huh?

Re: [AMRadio] retro 75

2010-04-07 Thread Robert Lawson
My friend Ron N4RT built one and had a nice chat with Art N4JK about 90 air
miles away one afternoon recently. And I have one still in the kit form that
I will soon built. It's a fun project for us here at the 65 dollar price
and I will have fun with it just as I do with my Norcal 40A qrp cw 40 meter
transceiver. I am quite sure some will put the Retro 75 retrofitted in a
WWII, Korean, or VN comm handheld/backpack and have a ball at hamfest with a
long whip antenna. It's a venture and I am thankful that the Small Wonder
Labs came out with it..for our fund to build. Kudos I say to Dave
Benson K1SWL. It's not like he had to do this for us, as in I don't think
he's going to become a millionaire from this endeavor. As I am in my
retirement years I laud those who provide us with constructive projects to
complete.

Hear here, hear here, hear here. Thanks Dave.

Re: [AMRadio] RETRO 75 Build

2010-03-19 Thread Robert Lawson
Hi All,

Robert W4RL here in Pensacola FL. I just ordered one and have also sent an
email to Smallwonders about obtaining a cabinet for my Retro 75. Tell you
the truth it's plain just fun building good kits now days and enjoying the
final test runs. Same with my Norcal 40A 40 meter CW QRP transceiver which
by the way has one of the hottest receivers I've ever listened to on the
air. When the 60 meter SSB transceivers come into production I will order
one of those to build. All this certainly beats watching the grass grow
from the shack while in retirement. Money well worth spent to keep mentally
active.

Regards,

Robert

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-24 Thread Robert Lawson
Yes Bernie I agree.

And also true gifts that are unconditionally given to friends and strangers
are those that need not be mentioned publicly, as if so, they are not gifts
but hidden agendas by the giver.

Yes, this is rather sad. But what goes around, comes around. I think
though for some the old adage of "mine is bigger than yours" prevails as
their primary life's mantra.

I'm out of here on this thread.

Re: [AMRadio] Relay Voltage ID

2009-07-04 Thread Robert Lawson
Fellas, I want to take the time and thank you all for helping me learn so much
more about relays.  It never ceases to amaze me how much grey matter is out
there within our ham radio fraternity willing to help.  I know we all feel that
this 'hobby' of ours crosses all professional, religious, and political
boundaries world wide in the pursuit of enjoying all its rewarding facets and
sharing it.  For me, a very important portion of my journey on this earth of

As a knowledgeable listmember replied, this could be a 110VDC coil. It
could also be a "plate relay," used in the plate circuit/load of a relay
control tube (these were typically 10Kohms nominal resistance). Even if
not intended for use in that application, it certainly would work there.

[AMRadio] Relay Voltage ID

2009-07-03 Thread Robert Lawson
Gentlemen,

I've a Potter & Brumfield KR-2349-1 double pole single throw open frame relay.
I am trying to find out the AC or DC voltage requirements as they are not
marked on the coil.  The coil measures 11.7 Kohms.  Any help would be
appreciated.  I've already done a Google search with no results on this
particular relay.  Thanks in advance.

Re: [AMRadio] shocks, interlocks and misc

2009-01-21 Thread Robert Lawson
With both hands raised, I comment. Ah yes, one of several ceremonies
in becoming a grown man and un-idiot. Thank goodness we're not
counting body scars. HI

My claim to fame: While holding a D-104 sitting in an old chrome chair
with worn out seating fabric and leaning back on the two legs mostly and
with my bare feet up on the bench during a QSO in my garage shack I
inadvertently rocked one of the back legs (without the rubber foot) on a
live extension cord. I was just having a good ol'time jawing away on 6
meters AM . But every time I'd lean forward wanting to write down a
comment note I get the you know what shocked out of me. Remember me
holding the D-104? Yours truly aka super brain finally saw what was
happening and the next minute or so I was in deep though on how long I
could remain teetered back in that wiggly frame chair before I figured
how to get out of my predicament And you ask, what was I wearing to
make that AC circuit. We (family-read young wife and two screaming kids
full of sand and sunburned) just came home from the beach and I heard 6
meters wide open. Mother and kids were inside showering and all.
Superbrain was still in his wet salt water bathing suit being called for
the '6 meter chase'. Of note: While still in a state of teetering, my
wife came back out into the garage with her unhappy mama face on and
demanded when I was going to come in and help her with the children. I
said, "Honey, I can't right now, believe me". I will not discuss what
transpired in the next 30 seconds but I was still teetering when she
slammed the door muttering something about how stupid she was to have
in the first place. And then I was alone again.still teetering
but none the worse for ware from her personal evaluation of me, aka her
idiot husband, the father of her poor innocent children smitten with
their father's genes, and so on. How did I escape my delima you ask.
No not the familial one, but the ham radio one. Well, I am proud to
say that I did get my cherished D-104 back intact on the operating
bench. I pitched it as accurately as I could. But in doing so,
(remember me still teetering), I lost my balance in that so name
position and ended up falling out of the chair (which that day ended up
in the trash bin) and me tumbling down the back garage concrete steps
after my route of passing through the door opening to the back yard.
And man did that supper green grass feel good. I kinda laid there a
spell looking at puffy clouds and soaring birds and eventually heard my
wife and kids leave evidently to go out to eat. I compose myself and
went into the kitchen and had a PBJ and glass of milk while reflecting
upon my brush with imminent demise. No not the electrical one, the one
with the wife. This story is true. Want me to show my scars? Yes, the
ham radio ones!

Excellent posting. Have bookmarked it. As an example, I certainly was
focused on the details of the Listening Sonobuoy #0390. Fascinating
reading for a non-engineer type. What does it have to do with BA's,
about near the same as the Pope with Catholicism I would imagine. You
know some late teen young air-dale or tin can Sailor way back had to
digest some of those manual's details like the back of his hand. To
have when the balloon went up. I've listened to old timers who in the
50's / early 60's who during the cat and mouse North Atlantic games
between Navies huddled amid ship in a P-2 or P-3 patrol aircraft in the
dead of winter at night with low overcast bumping along at 500 feet
altitude having to shove those ear bullets out the tube into the seas
and then start their listening routinewithout the conveniences of a
oak paneled gentleman's smoking room complete with open hearth fire and
one's select Kentucky bourbon and seven course mean coming soon. Took
true grit. I guess ya just had to be there to really know.

Re: [AMRadio] Crystal Mic Elements

2007-12-08 Thread Robert Lawson
And as usual, we hams have always come up with a back channel / back
door of ways to make things work cheaper and as good at least and often
times better. It's the spirit of our fraternity from our beginning,
isn't it. I personally hated it when Astatic pulled the D-104 crystal
element plug for us, but we will survive with all the fellas trying to
see what goes with the 'other' elements now on the market with which
they experiment.I have two JT-30's but am embarrassed to say that I
have never put them on the air.

Wish me luck with my Audio-Technica ATR30 30 dollar venture. It
certainly is built very well and has great looks. I will wire it up soon.

Steve/K5LTK, perhaps, ordered some D-104 cartridges. In fact, I think
they were the JT-30 replacement crystal cartridges, which have a very
similar sound to them, if not a bit 'richer'.

With the right amount of EQ, any microphone can be made to sound -at
least- acceptable on the air.

John, in particular, came up with an RC network, incorporating some
inverse feed-back on a 12AX7 mic preamp that flattens out the audio
response on most any crystal element mic (like a D-104 or JT-30, etc...)

Geoff,

Yep, "we" did go through that a few years ago at length, but it seems
there are some "'new' to D-104 crystal element replacement" ham radio
fraternity members joining in such queries to our aging AM affectionatos
with patient answers and suggestions. Don't know about Otis. Would not
want an old stock one anyway now. Things just change in this world,
just like us physically.

Regards and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Robert W4RL

PS, Bob W1PE was there not an article in QST some time back that
featured a homemade microphone with a 'cheap' element? I'll have to go
and find it.

Of note to all, I purchased an Audio-Technica ATR30 from J&R Music World
Computer World for 30 dollars shipped that I am matching to my Icom 756
Pro 3 and then to my BA gear transmitters. More than half the fun in my
ham radio hobby is "tho'in a rock into the woods and see what moves"
with my radio experimentations. Keeps the 'what if' ham radio energy
flowing in this old timer. HI

John, as far I know Astatic has not manufactured them in several years.
There are though some fellas who have replaced the 104 crystal or
ceramic element with a wide variety of elements ranging for Radio Shack,
those supplies by Mouser Electronics, and Heil microphone HC-4/5

with Heil.
I remember a contact on AM with a ham who was using a 3 dollar crystal

[AMRadio] Just a thought for laughter and memory

2007-11-26 Thread Robert Lawson
I would think that most of us ain't no more spring chicken (rosters)
anymore, so I though I would ask this in light of some of the serious
exchanges that I've read/deleted over the AM band plan ala IRAU/ARRL
recently.

Question: What was your favorite April QST April Fool's article, or one
that could have qualified?

I remember from years past "The Vertical Beer Can Special" and also the
ham who wrote the article on the compact antenna mounted atop the roof
of his high rise New York apartment building with the radiating element
being a red light bulb with comments on all those he contacted on the
bands using the antenna aks dummy load.

Of personal note, I remember years ago when we were having a big
family/friend cookout in my backyard with all the young family/children
energies going on, I tried to assemble a beer can vertical or at least
get all the element parts collected. You can imagine the rest of the
story with all the other young non-ham fathers attempting to assist me
in advice and physical efforts. Did we succeed ? Well I'll say this. We
did get the antenna high enough to resonate on 6 meters then we just
kind of lost interest in the vertical extension element assembly for
some reason as each can was becoming more difficult to 'solder' to the
next, :-) then all of us going back to play with the kids and eat more
hamburgers and watermelon even though we had plenty of aluminum raw
materials left over to probably make a 160 meter vertical. Remember
those times?

Have happy thoughts this coming month with you families as they are (the
years) each numbered.

Merry Christmas

Yes, and to all those who love us dearly who put up with our
idiosyncrasies in our ol'silver back age, which is also laced more often
than not with our ham radio (mis)adventure irrational behavioral
habits. God bless them all. And give genuine thankful time to all of
them tomorrow, totally from your heart being head of your household and
responsible for them all. Fall asleep in your easy chair after your
feast, let the women chatter in the background all at the same time
enjoying the love of them all together, have no complaints when you
grandchild crawls upon you and looks into your hairy ears and noses,
then falling sound asleep upon your belly during the college football
game on TV or the older ones playing with video games or outside fooling
around with your tools, coin and stamp collection and such. Play your
traditional part in this world. One of whom they all will remember for
being the real loving you and not necessarily the ham radio operator.

Savor the day both in mind, heart and spirit, but also in the giving
that they have given to you all these years. Sometimes, we just need to
step back and view all that is of and from us, and give back to them,
again and againand again every day. When we are gone, we only exist
in the minds of those who loved and appreciated us.

Good thoughts to all this evening.

I believe in this day of high cost iron, that properly operated carrier
control modulation into a amplifier is cost effective and functional. My

Don K4KYV said -- Controlled carrier AM reduces the
duty cycle demand on the amplifier.

Of course this is true, but attention needs to be paid
to the loss of carrier's value as part of the
wholesome AM experience.
(SNIP)
Reducing the carrier often shortchanges the listener,
and therefore is not recommended.

[AMRadio] Re: SRR-13 (RCA) Receiver

2005-10-09 Thread Robert Lawson
Thanks to those who gave me advice. Of note, the ol' gal was plopped in
the back of a pickup truck bed at a tail gater this past Sat in Florida
Town Fl (near Pensacola). I have no need for it, but if anyone is
interested contact me direct. Think he's take 50 for it at; least that
is what he told me after I said "naw, I don't need one, but thanks"

[AMRadio] NNNN

2005-07-23 Thread Robert Lawson

Fellows,

Where does the text "" originate (radio history) in text messages
below the "signature" line? I see used sometimes, depending on the
particular NWS forecaster, with the National Weather Service text
messages about active tropical storms/hurricanes (which I might add,
seem to be frequenting my area lately HI). Also there is sometimes the
"$$" being used along with the ""

Just wondering.

Heathkit HO-10 if in good shape. Watch out for those heath hv
transformers. They work on the edge of their limits.

Re: [AMRadio] RE: new home brew receiver progress

2003-10-21 Thread Robert Lawson
Bret,

I think what you are doing is GREAT! Really enjoy reading all of your email
notes in the theory, design, construction (and hopefully not too much trouble
shooting on the bench HI). Keep up the good work. I look forwards in reading
your post, as it is actually a tutorial for us all. Of note, I am not an
engineer; I am a retired mental health psychologist. Don't let the "think
they know it all, but their wives know better" types change your course in this
project as this retarded shrink wishes to be on for the bus ride in the back
seat enjoying the view with you driving. HI
