Re: [AMRadio] Microphone recomendation

2009-09-21 Thread WB5OXQ
I use a Heil GM-4 hand mike on am and ssb. I also have a deep voice
and used to be in radio broadcasting. The Heil wide element has a
freq response of 60-16k with a bump at 2k to improve intelligence
while still having a good low end. The mike also has the Heil high
freq element with a switch to change into it if needed. I never use
the high element only use the full range. I get excellent audio
reports on am and ssb. I am using a Kenwood TS-2000.

Check JW Davis in Dallas. They may have a good full range 12" made for 20
watts or less. They have a website.

Re: [AMRadio] Hallicrafters R-12 speaker

2009-09-06 Thread Jim WB5OXQ inb Waco, TX
Has anyone considered trying to find a speaker out of an old console radio
or hi fi. The tube amps in them rarely made more than 10 watts. I use a
entensiion speaker from an old Zenith set with a 10" woofer and a pizzo
tweeter and it drives real good from a 3 watt portable radio.

Re: [AMRadio] Odd tuning on 160M

2009-07-19 Thread Jim WB5OXQ inb Waco, TX
Sounds like something in your antenna circuit is overheating and causing the
resonance to change. I had that same thing happen with a trap antenna and
finally a coil in the antenna burned up. I was running about 500 watts on
160. So I build an inverted L for 160 and I am using that will good results
when my rotator dial starts turning and the control box smokes. New I am
buying a new rotator and i am not planning to run power on 160 any more. I
cannot afford it.

Re: [AMRadio] RME 4350 Help!

2009-05-30 Thread Jim WB5OXQ inb Waco, TX
I wonder if it received lightning damage or someone accidentally
transmitted into it? Perhaps an open coil where the antenna is coupled into
the rf amp tube or maybe an open if coil. Some work with a signal tracer
will probably locate the problem. I used to take a small capacitor maybe a
.01 and jump across coils and see if the signal jumps up. If it does you
found a bad one. Of course a schematic would help lots if you can find one.
Good luck and 73, WB5OXQ

Re: [AMRadio] old BC AM FM or TV rigs

2009-04-04 Thread Jim WB5OXQ inb Waco, TX
This was a fairly recent Continental 5KW transmitter, all solid state except
for the single ceramic PA tube maybe a 4cx5000. I figured little value for
ham so it was sold to another small station. It would be very difficult to
get a bc rig into my shack but there could be room in the garage for one.
This weekend I have to lower the crankup and repair my 40 meter dipole that
fell in recent high winds. I listen most evenings on 7160 but often hear
little AM. I am told when I am on I am very loud in some parts of the
country. I understand that 375 watts of carrier is all that is allowed on
AM. I used to think it was 1KW back in the 50s when I used to visit my ham
neighbor.

[AMRadio] 7160Kc - The Video

2009-04-04 Thread Jim WB5OXQ inb Waco, TX
I would love to participate in this but I have no vintage equipment right now.
Except for my linear amplifier I am running Kenwood which with the heil mike
and good dsp audio settings I am told I have excellent audio. My amplifier is
American made TenTec Titan 425 and easily makes legal limit on am with about 10
watts of drive giving my transciever a lot of headroom. I do have a camcorder
and a digital camera that can shoot video and a video capture card in my pc. I
watched the video and was impressed but like most I am not fortunate to have a
broadcast transmitter. I was offered one a couple of years ago from a station
that went dark but it was FM so I knew I could not use it for ham.

Re: [AMRadio] For Wb5OXQ, and anyone else who wants to read the Mail

2009-03-30 Thread Jim WB5OXQ inb Waco, TX
I am surprised I was that loud for having to tune up on the wrong antenna.
We have had a lot of wind lately and the rope that supported the 40 meter
antenna broke and the antenna is on the roof now. I am now on the twin
sloper which uses the tower as part of the antenna system. With 375 watts
forward there is 25 watts reflected and that is not too bad. The 40 meter
dipole would have been better since you would have been perfectly on the
side of it.

Re: [AMRadio] Good Receivers for AM

2009-02-23 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
I had a SX 110 that was about the best short wave gen coverage receiver I
ever owned. Reasonably priced too.
I have had a lot of different receivers in the past few years but this has
real good audio on am and can power a fairly large speaker easily. Easy to
tune too.

2009-01-26 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
I just got home and tried 29 but I figured it is way too late at night. I
called CQ a few times at 25 watts and did not raise anyone. I was not in
the mood to wait for the 3CX800s to warm up and retune the amp for 10M so I
returned to 160.

[AMRadio] 160 meter antenna

2009-01-12 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
Thanks to all who responded to my questions.
As much as I would like to make something work on 160, many of the suggestions
would be hard to do. I guess even 80' is not high enough to make the dipole
work well. This tower is not like a Rohn 25 etc. It is a very heavy tower
made of 3 legs around 1.5" dia ea and the base is grounded and in poured
concrete. The width between legs is around 8' (a guess) at the ground and
about 3' at the top. This was part of a 120' free standing tower and the top
sections were not installed. There is a crossarm at the top about 5' wide
where the 2 fiberglass base antennas are mounted. I was going to have a pulley
attached to one side of this arm so my center insulator would be at least 2'
away from the tower. At the bottom of the tower is the metal building and
there is a 6' metal fence extending in 2 directions from the tower. 1 side of
the fence runs directly away from the tower about 200' and the other side runs
200' and makes a right turn for another 80'. Behind the tower and away from
the metal building there is a road that runs across the property where big
trucks drive and it is only about 20' behind the tower so no wires can cross it
unless they are over 14' at any point and nothing can be on the ground.
The only other tower I have access to is a 193' Rohn 45 and it too is grounded
and guyed and the guys are not insulated from the tower. I don't think you can
shunt feed a guyed tower unless the guys are insulated.
I do know about am broadcast towers but I am not a climber and I have been told
workers are not allowed to climb a hot tower any longer. I did enjoy comments
about the old days where workers jumped onto the tower! Only broadcast work I
ever did was a fm station and that is a different animal completely. The only
time I got scared at the transmitter site was during a bad thunderstorm and I
got in my truck and drove to the edge of the pasture away from the tower until
the storm passed. I never saw a strike but I just would not stay in the small
wooden building where I could not get more than 5 feet away from the
transmitter (a 5kw Continental).

[AMRadio] 160 meter antenna

2009-01-11 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
I always wanted to try am on 160 but like most do not have enough room for a
full size antenna, so,
I am considering building a 160 meter antenna at our clubhouse because there is
a 80' tower there and over an acre of land to spread out a 1/2 wave dipole.
Question is;
1 Is a 1/2 wave wire dipole the best antenna for the band considering there is
room for it.
2 Is 80' high enough for the center of the inverted V?
3 How high do the ends need to be off of the ground?
4 Should I feed it with coax or ladder line to the 10' level (or other) then a
balun to coax to the tuner (coax is the only acceptable line into the shack)?
The shack is a metal building 30X60' and directly below the tower. There is no
way to get ladder line to the operating position since all cables have to run
through a 3" conduit for at least 30'.

The tower is a free standing commercial tower made of 4 20' sections bolted
together with a 2 meter and a 440mhz antenna at the top, all ham antennas.

Thanks for any advice. Jim wb5oxq__

Re: [AMRadio] Radio Noise, BPL?

2008-07-14 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
That is indeed strange. I can think of wireless intercoms, wireless light
controls etc that use the ac line for their carrier usually at low
frequencies I believe. I really cannot think of anything else right now.

Jim,

This meter/inlet panel is on the outside of the attached office building.
The distro panel it feeds is turned off via the main breaker since the
building is vacant at this time. The the much larger power drop and panel
for the main building where my workshop/storage is located is on the
opposite side of the main building and is not a source of noise.

The noise has the fundamental sound of a network cable but without any
traffic. Looking at my IF with a scope, the waveform is a flat top
positive going pulse with even spaced harmonics maybe, 100kc or less
apart. Certainly not phase controller harmonics. I haven't gotten all my
gear up and running yet so some of what i'm seeing may be from front end
overload.
Need to put in some input attenuation to to find the fundamental and
actual signal level. It appears to be in or even below
the broadcast band but the HF receiver only goes down to 1500. At that
point the noise level completely buries any broadcast stations. Will try
using the portable if it stops raining Monday.

My Spectrum Analyzer, Tek 7L12, was heavily smoke and water damaged
recently and I'm a bit lost without it. There is no better tool to locate
and identify noise sources. At least one that I can afford.

Don't know, have to get it removed somehow. Would like to get my station
back on the air and there is no way with this noise.

It is way outside
of a permissible radiation level whatever it is.

Will update when and if the problem goes away.

Thanks !
Bill, KB3DKS

Re: [AMRadio] Radio Noise, BPL?

2008-07-13 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
This does not sound like BPL Noise to me. However I understand some new
meters transmit their readings to the power company using the power lines.
If this is not the case you may have a faulty meter or problem in the
connections inside the box. I would call the power company. Can you
temporarily turn off a main breaker to shut down the whole building to see
if the problem goes away when load is removed?

Subject: [AMRadio] Radio Noise, BPL?

Hello,
I just finished cleaning and some repairs to my main HF receiver and put
up a longwire inside the large old factory room outside of my new workshop
location.
Being inside a building is really not the best thing but this is
temporary and it's an old 4 story 100 yr old mill built mostly of brick
and without any other working industry present. Mainly some artists lofts,
etc.
So what I have found is this white noise like signal with clear harmonic
related intervals from at least the broadcast band up to a significant
level above 40 meters. It completely overloads the receiver below 80
meters so it has been difficult to pinpoint the exact fundamental if there
is one. I am talking about a signal level almost as strong as the local AM
station!!.

Some D.F.ing using a portable with a ferrite having excellent nulls
pinpointed what appears to be the source
as being a large outside electric meter box supplying service to an
attached office building about 100ft away from my workshop. The level of
the RF noise around this panel is unbelievable! This office has not been
occupied for about a year but the last tenant was a cable installation
subcontractor.

There is no intellegence apparent on the noise or what seems to be a
carrier buried in it. No AM FM PM or any other form of modulation. The
level does reduce when there is rain.

Has anyone experienced BPL this close or have any idea what this could be?

Re: [AMRadio] amp for am

2008-04-05 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
I use a Ten Tec Titan 425 which uses a pair of the 3cx800 ceramic tubes and
will go way past legal limit and still have some headroom for modulation. I
originally used a amp with a pair of 3-500zg tubes but about 125 watts of
carrier was all you could get without the plates getting real hot.

[AMRadio] Whic radio might be best on AM?

2008-02-29 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco

Since I trade radios a lot and since the Belton Hamfest is coming soon I am
looking at several transceivers to trade for. I am also keeping my TS-B2000
that I use now for everything.

The current choices are;
A Drake TR-7This says it simulates AM with a carrier and only the upper
side band. That might not sound good

A Kenwood Ts-940SAT
A Kenwood TS-930S.
OR just a receiver and transmit on the 2000 like I do now;
A Grundig Satellit 800
A Drake R-8
A JRC NRD-525
A Yaesu FRG-7
Any comments on these are appreciated. You can email me off the list if
desired. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [AMRadio] Wanted: Receiver - New England

2008-02-17 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
Watch out for some of the very old receivers that don't have a very good
front end and are not very sensitive. I would try to look at specs and find
a receiver that has at least 1 microvolt sensitivity. Stay away from the
smaller rigs that do not have an rf amplifier and some don't. always check
the tube lineup to make sure. Some even have 2 rf amp tubes. I have owned
rigs like the NC183s that have push pull audio out and others like an NC98
that had only a 6aq5 making a watt but sounded real good and rich connected
to the correct speaker and the speaker has a lot to-do with how good the
audio sounds. I use a 2 way speaker that came from a tube type Zenith
stereo radio. It has a 8" woofer and a 2" tweeter and was built to be used
on a radio that only made 1.5 watts of audio so it drives easily with single
ended output radios and sounds very full and rich. If you love rich tone
stay away from small speakers that have small drivers in them but be aware
that if you use a large system built for a home stereo system it may need
more power than many radios can put out.
Here is a good web site that may have useful information for you.

I want to thank everyone who has responded so far, both on and off
list, to this thread. Brett, N2DTS, said, a couple posts posts back,
that I need to take a better inventory of my priorities so let me try
and clarify what they are to me.

From what I've read, there are two categories of receivers;

"Battle-Fields" and Hi-Fidelity and it is very difficult to have your
cake and eat it to. Unfortunately, I am trying to have a mixture of
both but leaning more towards Hi-Fi because it is the pure love of the
sound of AM that is driving me to setup this AM station.

I am learning that there is no perfect receiver and it is very hard
for a newbie like me to pick one. I wish I had the luxury to afford
to buy several different ones like some people but I can only afford
one receiver at the moment A big problem for newbies is the fact
that EVERYONE has differing opinions for each model and it's often
hard to get two people to totally agree on the same model. For
example, I'll ask for opinions on an ABC-123 and one person will
reply, "oh yeah, it's awesome on AM" while another will say "stay
away, it's only good for slopbucket signals". If I could afford
multiple purchases, it'd be much easier to take a gamble and
experiment but I can't so it's very difficult to choose from just
looking at specs and "opinions".

With this said:

AM 75M and 40M coverage is my primary interest at this time, I will
NEVER be using the radio to tune in slopbucket nor CWer. SWL and 160M
coverage would be nice as well but it will be a couple years before I
have space for a 160M antenna.

Hi-Fidelity is near the top of my must haves but not if it's
results in a huge hit on receiver performance. However, I definitely
don't want bottom of the barrel communications grade audio. I've been
in some shacks where the audio fills the room and you can feel the
audio down to your bones. I want to achieve this or as close as I can
get within my budget.

Looks, style, size, and weight don't really matter as it's what's
inside the box that counts to me. Ideally the smaller the better and
if it fits in a standard 19" rack, all the better as I have plenty of
rack space.

Budget - Yeah, this will always be an issue for me. But I can
realistically afford to spend a max. of $400 on a receiver so I may
not be able to get super Hi-Fi with this budget but I would think that
I should be able to still find something with very good fidelity. If
I had the money to go all out, I'm the type of person who definitely
would so I am not trying to cheap out on this. But I do want to get
something now rather than save an wait.. patience and me have never
gotten along.

Since my first post a couple days ago, I've been reading a bit about
Hallicrafters SX-17's and SX-42's with their push-pull 6V6's and how
they can really make some very nice audio - a couple people seem to
really like these. However, for some reason, these two rigs don't
seem to be mentioned much.. are they genuine "sleepers" in this case?
The SX-17 appears to have good sensitivity and good selectivity with
an IF bandwidth switch actually works. I think I read that the narrow
position is somewhere around 4-5 kc and the wide is somewhere around
10-12 kc.

Has anything I've said made sense and may point me to more specific
models of receivers I should be looking at?

Thanks again.

Re: [AMRadio] Wanted: Receiver - New England

2008-02-17 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
The 300 IS a great receiver but it is ham bands only so if you want to do
any swl listening it may not be what you want. I had one and for ham bands
it is real good and works well on ssb also. I did not like it as well on am
as the sx 110 I am restoring now and the Hallicrafters is general coverage
with bandspread for 80,40 20, 15, and 10 meter ham bands but not as good on
ssb as the national.. there are lots of good tube sets out there you need
to decide if you want to use it only on ham or do you want to listen to
international broadcasts also? My favorite receiver for swl and ham has
been a Hammurland HQ180 but they are not cheap when you can find one.

I'm going to be looking for a receiver at the beginning of the month

I don't have a big list of requirements and can't afford a "museum
quality" R-390A or Super Pro but want to get on the air now that I
have a decent plate modulated TX and not sure if my simple regen I am
building will be up to snuff. I should probably save/wait for
NEAR-fest but I'd really like to get on the air.

I'll have $350 to $400 to spend:

* Primary use - HAM band AM reception primarily on 75 and 40 initially
- 160 down the road

* Needs to work, something that needs a little TLC is fine but would
like it to work as soon as I bring it home.

* Something located north of New York City so I can come pick it up.
I don't like driving south of NYC.

* Nice audio, doesn't have to be the greatest quality but just
enjoyable listening and something I can feed into a nice speaker
system.

* Something that would fit inside a 19" rack cabinet would be a big
plus but not a requirement. Desk space is getting sparse but I have
about 3' of unused space inside my rack where a RX could fit nicely.

Any ideas? Thanks guys.

[AMRadio] Paint for sx 110

2008-02-13 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
Does anyone know where I can buy paint the correct color for the sx110
hallicrafters radio I am restoring? The dial and radio face and chassis is
excellent as is the radio electronically but the case has scratches and
chips so I want to sand it and repaint it with the correct color. Then the
radio will be like new. I tried radio daze and antique radio supply but
found nothing. I thought maybe some Hallicrafters collectors here might
know. Thanks. Jim WB5OXQ.

Re: [AMRadio] 6V6 vs. 6L6

2008-02-13 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
In audio circuits I have replaced 6v6 with 6l6 and they work. the 6l6 is
capable of more plate watts than a 6v6 but to get the best advantage you
need more plate voltage so I would use silicone diodes to replace the
rectifier tube and get a little more B+. I would not want to replace a 6l6
with a 6v6 though of the circuit was designed for 6l6's.

Re: [AMRadio] Contest signal reports

2007-09-30 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
I have yet to get seriously interested in contesting. If I cannot have at
least a simple conversation with another ham and exchange more than a signal
report with him who cares! If you ask me for a report I will tell you
exactly what I hear not necessarily what my s meter says. I have been a ham
since 1974, not long as many of you, but I got into ham radio for fun and to
meet people many of whom I will never see. I go to a few ham fests where I
sometimes put a face with a voice on the air and that is fun also. I also
answer all cq's I hear unless it is just for a contest and I rarely answer
those except on field day. I know some things about radios but I have never
designed one. I do repair them and I work at a 2 way shop. I am sorry but
contesting has never been fun to me and I seriously doubt it has bought a
slice of bread for anyone's meal. If ham radio cannot be fun I will find
something else to spend my spare time on. I love AM because of the quality
of the sound and the quality of most hams I find there! I hope to meet some
of you at Belton next weekend. 73, Jim Miller WB5OXQ and XYL Ella KA5EPM

A dipole for the 17m band is only about 26 feet long, 13 ft on a side. It
could fit oneven a small roof in an inverted vee shape pretty easily,
maybe from

a chimney in the middle stretched over to either side.

You must be pulling our leg. The dipole is roughly 26 feet in length.
You might be able in squeeze in it somewhere based on what you have

I would like to cut a dipole for 18.150 and see what
kind of AM activity we could stir up. The band is
lightly loaded most of the time, so there's room for
the occasional chat.

Anyone else thought of that ?

[AMRadio] Best amplifier for AM

2006-12-18 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
What amplifier are most finding that work well on AM. Mine is supposed to be
good for only 165 watts of carrier and the tubes want to overheat even at that
power.
Is a solid state amp better? I understand that you can only expect 25% of the
key down output when running AM. Apparently a pair of 3-500s are only good for
650 continuous for sstv, FM etc and only 25% of that for AM. I use an Orion
for a transciever so 25 watts is all the output it has on am and I guess that
means 100 watts pep.

 Hi Everyone,

I am new to boatanchors and need some advice. I am beginning to collect
antique radios. I want suggestions on what my first one should be. I am
living in a duplex so a xmitter is out of the questions, so I thought I'd
get a "nice" receiver to listen on. I would prefer something that would
also receive SSB as this will be my only reciever for a while, but not at
the sacrifice of selectivity on AM. I had a TS-850 that I unfortunately
had to sell a few months back for a move for a new job. It had great
receive (and Xmit) on AM, and so I'm wanting something in that caliber.
I've read great things about the HQ-180A but I think it's only AM and a
little out of the price I'm looking for. I'd like to find soemthing in the
$300-350 range. Any suggestions???

Perhaps, I should use a mixer unit that has low impedence input with a

I believe that radio was for export to the North American market. The ID
label is entirely in English. The domestic German consoles typically did
not have labels in english, the FM broadcast band (if present) extended
only to about 100mHz, designated as UKW. MW and LW were also on the
domestic models. Export (North America) typically lack LW.

Re: [AMRadio] Grundig Radio Console

2006-06-30 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
That is true. Mine is all labeled in German and the FM band does only go up
to 100mhz. Therefore you may have a 110v 60hz unit and it will work ok in
the US. At first glance it looks like the side speakers on mine were 4 inch
but they were 3 3/4 and the woofer looked like a common 6X9 but it is a 7
1/5 X10". Mine is not stereo but it is also a 1957 model and it has
simulated stereo by putting only lows up front and the highs on the speakers
firing out of each side. There is even a kind of acoustic lens in front of
each tweeter to spread the sound. Mine plays pretty good but there seems to
be a bandwidth problem on the fm band and the tuning is very touchy or the
sound is distorted. AM works ok and short wave requires an external antenna
to pick up much of anything.

Re: [AMRadio] Grundig Radio Console

2006-06-30 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
I have a similar set by Blaupunkt that I restored a few years ago. This set
is probably from the early to mid 60s.
Some of the tubes are a little hard to find but often there are American
versions that will work but have a different number. A good crossover chart
will help if u find u need tubes. The turntable may be designed for 220vac
at or 50hz and not work in the US. The radio chassis will have a voltage
selector for several voltages for the radio and the line frequency wont
matter for the radio. These sets often use selenium rectifiers so be
careful handling them. I understand they can contain poison. Dial cords
can be a problem also and there are sometimes dial cord operated rotating am
loopstick antennas inside as well as other cord operated gadgets. The
speakers are often weird sizes and impedances also. I have found the short
wave sensitivity poor on these sets since they were built for use in Germany
where short wave is local. any more questions email me direct. I am good
in QRZ. WB5OXQ, Jim in Waco.

Re: [AMRadio] Vermont Governor Signs Amateur Radio Antenna Bill

2006-06-10 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
I figure if you want to have such antennas you should not choose to live in
a restricted area. I live in a very nice upper middle class area at the end
of a cul de sak and I have 2 50' towers with a force 12 c3 and a 2 meter
dual polarity beam on 1 and a dual band vhf uhf vertical and dipoles on the
other. There were no restrictions on this property and the city does not
say anything unless you wish to go way over 50'. My neighbors have never
complained to me about my antennas or any interference to their equipment
when I am on the air. I have lived here since 1990 and these homes were
built in 1980. There are areas where antennas are restricted so I would
find somewhere else to live if I wanted to be a ham. Why insist and be hated
by all your neighbors. It just doesn't seem worth it. I do not believe
however in states or cities banning antennas all over town. That infringes
on our rights to be hams. That is what I expect such a bill is to protect.

Re: [AMRadio] : BC 610 needing POWER 220VAC

2006-04-07 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
I had an idea that it draws too much current for a common 110 circuit. My
centurion amp requires 220vac also. Otherwise it would need 30 amps at 110
and that is too much for most wiring in homes. We never tired to operate
that transmitter and I don't know if he still has it but I bet he does. He
has a lot of STUFF that he never uses.

Hi Jim,
Most big rigs run from 220VAC if for no other reason, just load
balancing. Big rigs will often pull more that 20 amps of AC line current
on
modulation peaks. So to prevent the line voltage from dropping anymore
than
is necessary, we often put the HV power supply on a separate 110VAC side
of

a 220 circuit. And then run the rest of the rig, and other paraphernalia,
from the other side. This is call load balancing and it reduces the
current
on the common line of the 220 service and thereby reduce power voltage
drops

on modulation peaks.

I have a friend who had one of these transmitters and we did not know what
it really was good for. We could not connect it to try it out because it
seems to me it needed 220vac and we only had 110vac at his house. I do not

I never found anything wrong with the CB radio which used to be the 11 meter
ham band prior to 1958 I believe, just the IDIOTS that began to use them
illegally!
I expect many hams had a CB radio first and then discovered a better way
like I did. I had my first CB in 1967 and got my ham tickets in 1974. I
have never been sorry that I made the upgrade! On the highway I sometimes
tune my Ts 2000 to 27.185 AM and listen to the truckers. No, my rig will
not transmit on that band!

Re: [AMRadio] Switching between multiple rigs

2006-03-26 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
I use the alpha delta coax switches for the antenna connection between
transcievers. these have built in lightning protection if you run a good
ground to the switch and short the unused antenna connection to ground. I
do not use this on the output of the linear amplifier, rather on the input
so 2 different radios can share the amp. One radio is a TS 2000 Kenwood,
the other a Ten Tec Orion. I have never had a problem and the switch has an
off position which connects neither rig and grounds both antennas for
additional lightning protection.

John,

Your approach as always is a good one, and can be made to work out quite
well. This extra box will allow about a 6DB increase in power from what a
screen modulated 6146 can do. The DX-60 with carrier control can arguably
better match up to a linear amplifier, but must of us would agree that
carrier control as done on this rig is too much, and annoying to those
copying a weak signal that goes into and out of the noise with modulation
peaks. Now consider these options:

1.) Modify the DX-60 for non carrier control screen modulation. That
should

provide about 20 watts carrier with room for + 100% modulation.

2.) Modify the DX-60 for plate modulation. This might require a 6146 bias
change for proper class C plate modulation bias. You will also have to
deal

with modulating the screen grid. The plate tuning capacitor might flash
over, and other components may need to be beefed up to handle the higher
peak power. Once done, you will have a fine 45-50 watt AM rig that you
could

be proud of.

3.) Combine option 1 with this: Mate up the modified DX-60 to a linear
with
1000 watts of dissipation available (like two 3-500Z's). Now you can
easily

run 250 watts AM or more (maybe 375) of quality AM.

4.) Use the DX-60 as is (stock), or with an amplifier as you wish.

The choice is yours,

Jim

I still say, forget the linear, and use less money to build a plate
modulator for the DX60. It will work better, sound better, cost less, and
heat the shack up less. As I recall the DX 60 has a 6146 in the final for
class C CW and puts out about 40-50 watts of carrier if it were plate
modulated it would do at least 200 watts PEP and sound great. There is a
number of different ways to do the modulator. A lot of guys just find and
old PA and a transformer to match to the final. Some build the modulator
output stages only, input XFMR tubes and modulation XFMR. Then they drive
it with a small microphone amp. That's more stuff to set around on the
desk

but it works. There are a lot of self contained 25 and 50 watt modulator
circuits around and probably a lot of complete one piece store bought
modulators as well. As I recall, EICO had a pretty nice one that was to
go

with the EICO model 720 but it was used on many different rigs as well as
being used as a driver for big modulators. A buddy of mine had an ECIO
720
and built a nice home brewed modulator for it using 1625s in AB1. It
sounded

real good. I built one similar to it with less power output for my Knight
Kit T60. The T60 had the same control carrier AM that the DX60 does.
What
a difference it made when it was plate modulated. Very little
modification

is necessary in the DX60 to accommodate the external modulator.

Re: [AMRadio] Local oscillators and TVI

2006-03-05 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ
When I was in high school in the mid 60s a friend bought a older multiband
console radio, RCA model 15K built in 1937.
This was a real good sounding console with a tuned speaker compartment
housing a 12" EM speaker which must have weighed 30 pounds. The receiver
had 15 tubes and push pull 6L6 output so it was healthy to say the least.
The most interesting band was in the 40-60mhz range which could pick up the
highway patrol broadcasts. I now know that was probably supposed to be the
original FM band that was before they moved it to 88-108mhz. Anyway those
radios had no internal antenna and needed a piece of wire attached to the
antenna terminal for best reception. We found that an old outdoor tv
antenna worked real well for reception on the fm band. I would visit at
this home at night after supper and we would listen to the police calls for
a long time. We soon began to notice the neighbors would have the mobile tv
repair truck at their house regularly. I wandered over to listen to the
conversation the neighbor was having with thje tv repariman as he was
leaving their house. It seems that their tv played well in the daytime and
the repariman could find nothing wrong but ths neighbor told him that after
the evening news, they could barely pick up any stations at night (using
rabbit ears). That is when we learned about local oscillators. Since there
were no tv sets in 1937 and probably no FCC regulations about harmful
radiations the set was a real good transmitter on the low band channels.
Our local NBC station was channel 3. I guess using a tv antenna for an
external antenna on the old RCA really helped make the transmitted signal
even stronger! We found that funny and made a paper label and gluded it to
the back of the radio stating that "This receiver DOES NOT conform to part
15"!!!
Later we built a AM broadcast transmitter using a single 6L6 but that was
short lived and we never got caught.

Just trying to keep you out of trouble! ; )
I am sure my neighbors don't need a fm radio to hear my station especially
when I am on AM!

But if you use wireless speakers you don't get to introduce
your neighbors who roam the FM dial to the joys of amateur radio!

Hope they don't measure the FM broadcast transmitter I have,
so I can listen while doing stuff around the house and yard
with a walkman, its over a watt I think...

What kind of FM transmitter do you use? I have been looking for something
so I can use to feed streaming audio from my desktop computer to all the
FM radios on my property, so I don't have to sit in front of the computer
to listen.

I ordered one of the little FM stereo xmtrs from C Crane. It had good
synthesised frequency stability, but the audio was distorted and it had a
range of about 35 feet. I need good solid coverage within a radius of at
least 100 feet. I had intended to experiment with an external antenna
with the thing, but it crapped out before I could do that. They refunded
my money.

I think Ramsey sells kits, but I have heard they are pieces of crap.
