Thanks for the clarification, John. I remember that the userID was
based on Western Heritage Museum or such, but never knew it was the
Shriners selling the stuff. IIRC, didn't the museum's leadership also
change and play a role in the whole affair?

Therein lies the biggest problem. We grew up in a time when being an
amateur radio op was a badge of honor and associated with technical
knowledge and expertise. World explorers, world leaders, many of the
famous and influential made it a point to get involved. And we sure
can't blame today's kids for what amateur radio has become. Where's
the excitement and incentive to want to be involved when the emphasis
is placed on 'plug -n- play, then throw-away'? Save for a a few folks
like you John, who bring this history to the attention of others,
we're not presenting much of a legacy to anyone but ourselves.

Boy, if your kids don't want your stuff, we're in trouble! I'm
thinking the attraction today is mainly the same as it was back in our
early days: the glowing dials, tubes, attractive design, and the
mystery and magic of sending your voice all over the world, no wires
attached.

In fact, Leo was bothered by the whole affair and apologized for the
outcome. I remember reading (probably still have it saved somewhere)
his response. IIRC, someone emailed him and he wrote back trying to
explain. You can't blame him for trying, but museums are known to do
whatever they deem necessary to survive.

Todd,

No one was more distraught than Leo was. He originally thought it
would be displayed for many years there. When almost no one showed
up to see the display, the museum re evaluated and decided to use the
space. They allowed Leo a lot of time to find a new home.

Leo tried in vain to find a home for the collection. None of the
"official radio museums" wanted the gear. (they were all full.) At
one time I was offered the entire collection which I had to decline,
as I could not possibly provide the necessary space to house the
entire collection. Eventually it was donated to the Shriners who
sold it off through eBay. I was lucky enough to purchase one nice
piece which I have in my collection.

All the pieces now have new homes with hundreds of collectors. It
was the best that could be done.

We're lucky there still is a display of the EF Johnson equipment. In
time that too will disappear. Take a look around at your next
collector event. Where are all the young people to carry on for
us? In the New Jersey Antique Radio Club of a hundred or so members,
there is only one young person (about 17). After him it jumps to the
30's, and jumps again to the 50's and up.

My own kids don't want my collection. The best I can hope for is,
they will each keep a small piece or two. All the rest will
(hopefully) find new homes.

No, some of them sold for big $ on ebay, so no doubt they went to
private collectors. Some is bound to resurface. It's just gotta be a
bit annoying to think you're donating a piece of history that you've
preserved for years, to a museum who will do so for future generations
- only to discover they sold it. Not unusual for museums to do.

Ed mentioned in an email to me about his donations to the LST 325
living museum, which strikes me as one of the best ways to preserve
gear for the future: put it with an active group or organization who
specialize in such stuff. Unfortunately there don't seem to be as many
of these museums around as the 'whim' types who have to cater to the
prevailing winds to ensure funding.

Ed,

I stand corrected then! Call it CRS!

However, the REAL point that I was trying to make is that they do NOT
have a comprehensive display.

That is the part that has always disturbed me.

I can say the same for the Civil Air Patrol. Whom has history back to
WWII spotting submarines off the Coast.

It seems that if we are footing the freight for this place, it could
concentrate MORE on some REAL American things that NEED to be displayed
- YET - they ENSURE that they have LIVE African cockroaches on display.

Go figure!

Re: [AMRadio] EF Johnson museum

2008-06-20 Thread Ed Berbari

All,

I am almost positive there is a ham station at the museum of American
History. I have never seen it operational but it is there for sure. They
have a club call as well NN3SI.

Ed, W9EJB

Here is their blurb from QRZ:

NN3SI has been on the air from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum
of American History, formerly the National Museum of History and Technology,
for 30 years. For most of the three-million visitors to the Museum annually,
it is the first -- and possibly only -- Amateur Radio Station that they have
ever seen. The volunteer amateur operators of NN3SI are quick to point out
to them the value of Amateur Radio as a national resource for emergency
communications, trained operators, technicians and engineers as well as an
outstanding hobby.
NN3SI was originally located in an exhibition called A Nation of Nations
that helped celebrate the 1976 Bi-Centennial of our Country. The Federal
Communications Commission co-operated with the Smithsonian by issuing call
sign NN3SI, an unusual one for that time. The station has since been
situated in several different exhibitions. It currently resides in the
former Information Age awaiting relocation to a new exhibition.

The Amateur Radio control operators that keep the station on the air are
volunteers from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. They are on
hand from 10am to 3pm most days. The station is near the Washington
Monument, the White House and FCC Headquarters. The station antennas are on
top of the 6-story Museum building, about 80 feet above the National Mall.
They consist of a log periodic rotatable beam, two HF verticals, a 40-meter
and an 80-meter dipole. The VHF antenna is a 2-meter vertical.

The amount of space allotted to the station at its present temporary
location is a bit crowded by its two HF transceivers, a multi-mode 2-meter
transceiver, a dual band 2-meter/70-centimeter FM transceiver plus a
personal computer and a display of several pieces of vintage equipment. The
HF equipment consists of a Ten Tec Omni IV and a Kenwood TS-450. The
multi-mode transceiver is a Kenwood TS-711 and the dual band FM transceiver
is a Kenwood TS-733A.

Any licensed amateur operator may be a guest control operator of NN3SI. A
copy of your license, a photo I.D., and an appointment are required. To
schedule an appointment or to find out more about becoming a regular
volunteer control operator, please call

To go picking on NOT seeing two or three "particular" offerings from the
past is NOT surprising!

Pete - Try doing this by YOURSELF. Create a museum, let's say for
Hammarlund, let's see what ALL you can manage to locate, get restored,
OR find in museum quality condition.

Any museum has great difficulty getting the display items, much less
sifting through JUNK that is unsuitable for display.

Hi Pete,

Not to pick nits, but according to my Johnson literature, there was the
"Thunderbolt" amplifier and the "6N2 Thunderbolt" amplifier, as well as
the pictured "Courier" and the "Kilowatt" amplifier (which many hams
call the "Desk Kilowatt" but Johnson didn't). Of course they were all
"Vikings" as EFJ used that brand name across the entire transmitter and
station accessory lines.

As for the Avenger, what's that sitting to the left of the
walkie-talkies in photo 10? Looks like the rare and beautiful Avenger
to me! According to what I've read, only about 50 were built and most
kept by EFJ employees, which is probably why this one survives.

I'm happy to see a "reasonably complete" display like this, in contrast
for example to the Leo Meyerson collection which was dumped by the
Western Heritage Museum when someone decided it wasn't worth keeping on
display.

[AMRadio] EF Johnson Museum Photos

2008-06-19 Thread Robert Nickels
Ron Eisenbrey, AB5WG, a friend of a friend from Texas, recently visited
Waseca MN and the E.F. Johnson Museum there. When I was last in Waseca
in the early 80s, I saw what appears to be these exact displays in a
conference room at the EFJ plant, but had heard that through the various
ownership changes that the museum had been disposed of.

Fortunately not! Ron took some photos at it's new home in downtown
Waseca which you can view here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/RANickels/JohnsonMuseum

I've not been able to locate any information about museum hours, etc,
but it would certainly be worth an inquiry for anyone traveling to
southern Minnesota - Waseca is about 80 miles south of the Twin Cities.
