On 8/28/07, Geoff/W5OMR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone else have another other suggestions on how to silence a modulation transformer? Geoff - The usual remedy of mounting it on thick, stiff rubber can help along with tightening the tie bolts. I've also heard of guys baking them in the oven to soften the tar or shellac, then re-tightening everything while it's soft. Not sure how the expansion/contraction issue would apply here. Seems it would shrink up a bit as it cooled off? Maybe Gary will jump in here later with his recipe for success. IIRC, he told me it's all in the amount of vacuum you pull on the unit to impregnate it well with shellac. The laminations on my busted iron look bullet-proof, to the point that the broken frame shifted away from them slightly from the impact. I think he's had very good success with curing talk-back, but then again - he's not mass producing or cutting corners. He gives each piece of iron his full attention, and does it right. No shortcuts. He took photos of the many steps involved and sent them to me as he reworked my transformer. First rate. And yes - we are indeed fortunate for guys like Gary. I have a spare mod reactor out of my BC transmitter that will be going home with him at NEAR-Fest in October. Barry let all the tar out. ~ Todd, KA1KAQ __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

There are different things to soak a transformer in. I have used shellac with good results before. I don't think wax would be good with it's low melting point. Hi Bob and the rest of the AMers. Rewind transformers is a big satisfaction for me. I enjoy doing something I like. I have one more year before I retire and am trying to build a little nest egg business after the retirement. The only problem is customers at this time have a longer waiting period than normally would be for a rewind. My regular summer job takes up about 60 to 70 hours a week and this doesn't leave much time for weekend rewinding. There are a lot of mornings I get up at 2:30AM, work in the shop till 5:00AM, go to work and get home anywhere from 5:00PM to 8:00PM. 99% of my customers are aware of this and have no problem with it. Thank you Larry. Normally Gary is quick to respond but this time it has taken longer than in the past. I suppose I am just afraid that he might have stopped reworking transformers. Boy would I rue that day. Jim/W5JO Saw Gary last at the Deerfield (NEARFEST) hamfest in May. My guess is he's just taking a bit of time for himself, and will get back to you soon. If I run into him (next fester around here is Windsor, Maine on Sept. 8) I'll let him know you're looking for him, Jim. 73, -Larry/NE1S __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
