Re: [AMRadio] dayton

2007-05-22 Thread Peter Markavage
I'm back from scenic Dayton. Drove back on Monday and had to crawl the
last 20 miles on the PA turnpike (multiple accidents on both sides of the
road) to get to NJ. Saw lots of people while quickly walking the flea
market and many others stopped by my spaces to say hello. Tried and
sunburnt, and bones aching, but what a great time. I didn't get to turn
the TV on until Sunday night and I got there on Wednesday. I stayed on
the hotel where all the "contesters" and "Dx'ers" hang out. These people
don't get to bed until 3 AM or later. When I went to the elevator on my
floor Saturday morning around 6:30AM, there had to be at least 100 empty
or half-empty beer bottles and glasses, half eaten pizza, and some stuff
on plates that I had no clue what it was sitting on the credenza opposite
the elevator doors. Saturday night went down to the Marriott (shuttle van
from my hotel drove me down and back) for a CQ Mag. party and won a set
of beautiful Tiffany wine goblets as one of their prizes. This went well
with the Icom t-shirt and Yaesu cap that I gave to the wife.

All and all, a great time. Lots of stories and happenings to remember.
Most of this stuff you can't make up. I have some photos in the camera
when I find where I packed the camera. I even saw VJB fondling equipment
in the inside exhibit area.

Well, I did get some pictures. But, I need to go see Brett/N2DTS before
long. At least, I owe him a phone call, since I'm -only- about 4 miles
from his house :-)

I saw some great gear. I saw a Ranger for $1500, which, *I* thought,
wasn't that great, but it had the look of a W3HM restoration job. I did
see a truck there, with comm gear running in the back. Was probably you
guys, and that wasn't a bad location. I also found (once) the Antique
Wireless guys, and saw a box of 450TH/L's and other strange looking
tubes. Wanted to go back and find it again, but never did find that
place, again.

I was -almost- tempted to pick up the Viking II CDC transmitter that was
there. On Saturday, the price was down from$300 to $100. If it hadn't
sold by Sunday morning, I would have been more than tempted. As it was,
I had a more pressing item in which I -had- to spend money on. That
also curtailed my finding a hotel Friday evening, as in order to protect
what I had, I had to sleep in the car, which I did... from 4 to 5:30am,
Friday. (*yawn*)

See, on the way to Dayton, from Northern MO, an 18-wheeler truck and I
passed each other going the opposite way on a 2-lane hiway (36). The
resulting mini-tornado (the only thing it could have been) whipped the
tri-magnet mag-mount w/75m ham-stick antenna on it, OFF of the top of my
Honda CRX, and when the force of the air, going around 65mph blew it
backward, when it hit the end of the coax, it came straight down.

*WHAMP!* *CRASH!* *BOOM!* TINKLE, Tinkle, tinkle...

I'm ducking, looking for something to cover with, because I thought I'd
been shot. Knocked the back glass smooth out! Glass shards were found
up on the dash, even! No blood on me, after I stopped and took
inventory... I got lucky. Interestingly enough, it did -not- budge the
dual-band V/UHF mag-mounted antenna. Go figure.

Do you guys know how hard it is to find a back hatch glass for a 91
CRX? It wasn't until I got to New Jersey before I found one, and had it
installed, and I *garuntee* you it wasn't for the $900+ quote I got from
a glass place in Indianapolis. *snort!*

Now, off to Home Depot to get my $61+tax back for a 33"x48" sheet of Lexan!

Re: [AMRadio] dayton

2007-05-21 Thread W4AWM
Hi Todd,

That woman with the SX-88 was there 2 years ago. All her stuff was way
overpriced. Whoever was advising her as to value was way out in left field
somewhere. Many prices exceeded auction site prices by a good bit and much of
the
gear was filthy. I didn't even make any offers on the stuff.

A similar thing happened with a local estate of a noted local collector
several years ago. The only exception being that the gear in this case was
mostly
pristine and much had been restored. The XYL had been advised as to prices by
well meaning friends. These too, were on the high side, and then she added
"coded" prices to the tags to see if she could realize even more. The result
was
that she carted the stuff around to local hamfests for several years before
it was all gone.

I can't fault folks for trying to get the most they can for an item, but in
these cases, the prices asked were way out of line. You can either sell it at a
reasonable price and get rid of it fast ot haul it all over the country for
years and still have lots left over. In the Dayton case, I shudder to think
what she had to pay for truck rental and gas to haul all that junk from
Virginia
Beach and she hauled most of it back again.

Nice meeting you at Dayton.

73,

John, W4AWM

Sorry I missed you Geoff, I *did* keep my eyes peeled above average
crowd height in hopes of finding you. Missed a number of other folks

via on air or online.

Forgot to bring a camera with me but 'VJB took plenty of pics and has
some posted over on amfone.net under QSO. I got home after midnight,
so I still have to put down my thoughts and sightings at some point
soon.

The best deal of the event for three of us (now known as the Eimac
Boys) was finding a guy with a huge case of NOS 4-400As and chimneys.
WA2PJP, W2XR and myself ended up with a dozen or more, leaving maybe
4-6 in the box. Bulk buying power got a price reduction from $100 ea
to $75 ea. Date codes from 88/89. It was all in the timing.

Most amazing find for me was the matching/correct RF ammeter for my
300G, verified by 'VJB. Paid a whopping $4, sure was pleased to find
it. Opted not to buy the beat up SX-88 with custom wood escutcheon for
$5500. *snort*

Sure was a lot of stuff there, plenty of people too.

Re: [AMRadio] Dayton Weather

2007-05-09 Thread Peter Markavage
The weather that drives up the Ohio Valley can be very unpredictable at
times. As Dave points out, "However, I do keep a raincoat and parka in
the car just in case!!" Back when it was in April, there were a few times
when we even had snow flurries or the temps were in the upper 30's.
Things generally aren't that extreme in May, but 2 or 3 years ago, we had
lots of stuff floating around the flea market area after an almost all
day rain. We've also had 80 plus "sun burning" temps too. If you go often
enough, you'll learn to bring various types of apparel for the stay.

Yeah well after buying more than a couple of big mod transformers with shorted
windings, the gold turned out to be lead.

I suppose you could ship even the big stuff through UPS. It would still be
cheaper than car rental and fuel.

By the way, I still have this Raytheon 2.5 KW mod transformer.

Hi John,

I should have mentioned to everyone in my prior message...

I booked my entire trip more than a month ago through AAA. I have a hotel
for four nights - Thursday through Sunday, a rental car, airfare, and
surprisingly, I received my Hamvention tickets in last Friday's mail.

Finding lodging wasn't too difficult, though I am staying on the south-side
of Dayton about 18 miles or so from the Hara Arena. The Marriott-Fairfield
Inn where I'm booked required a minimum four night stay, so perhaps that
helped with availability. I do see now that the hotel is filled.

I am looking forward to it. I even treated myself to a new, suitcase with
TSA locks, and roomy enough to bring home any goodies I do decide I can't
live without. Oh, and since my plane does not leave till Monday evening, I
might even venture a hour north and pay Fair Radio a visit.

I don't know what is going on with advance ticket sales, but I haven't
received mine yet and I don't know anyone else who has. According to their web
site, requests received prior to April 4th were mailed on April 11th. The mail
around here isn't that slow!

You will have a good time, especially since it is your first Dayton. The
restrooms are crowded, the on site food is edible but expensive, but you can
stand
it for a few days.

I'll be attending my first Hamvention this year. It's a major trip for me
since my home QTH is in Utah. I was first licensed in 1980 at the age of 16
in California, and it has been a dream of sorts ever since to attend.

Now, reading the horror stories of the deplorable restroom facilities,
overall poor condition of the Hara Arena, et al, I was somewhat apprehensive
about my plans. I've also read many positive experiences of people's
attendance. I'm looking forward to it.

I am attending primarily to meet a couple good friends that I've never had
the pleasure to meet in person. Ironically, we never spoke on the air, but
have a mutual interest in crystal radios, regens, and such, and participate
on the Crystal Set Society's online discussion group. My friend, however is
indeed licensed in the UK (their Tech equivalent), and he has attended
Dayton annually for a number of years now.

I'm happy to say there is little I "need" to add to my collection. It will
be great to finally meet some people I consider friends, and perhaps my
overall interest in ham radio in general might be rekindled a bit.

But if you've got good junk to sell, it's not a bad deal.

And it's still a great place to meet friends - its too bad things are so
screwed up this year. There's nothing like it in the US, and the guys that
are trying to do it deserve a little support in pulling it off, even if
they're learning on the job.

I admit I bring home less, but it still brings out all sorts of old stuff.
I dragged home an ugly 30$ SX-96 last year that was mostly working and have
had a ball recapping and fiddling with it this winter. And found a 5$ audio

But I remain convinced anything cheap and good is gone 10 minutes after the
tailgates open, usually on Friday morning.

Bob -

YES! I think so, at least. Last year was the best year I think I've
had as far as enjoyment. The fall version ended up getting rained out
starting Friday night, but Friday was still a good time. For the
spring dates, wx was fine and so was the socializing and gear. Went
into Concord for dinner at Cheers with a bunch of the AMers, lead by
Larry NE1S in his early 60s Ford Falcon, complete with Elmac under the
dash. Brought 4 pieces of gear with me, got rid of them all but
brought 4 different ones back home (at least they were smaller).

Looking forward very much to the 'fester in 3 weekends. It's always
great to see the gang, soak up some suds, and hunt around the grounds
for goodies. Fortunately, I'm looking more for pieces-parts and less
for gear these days.

BTW, the 'fest is now held in Hopkinton, just west of Concord, and at
a fairground very much like the old Deerfield site.

Be there or B² !

Well, based on what I am seeing, I am very seriously thinking of changing
my

plans.

I doubt that I'll make it this year due to the screwed-up date. Can't get
away from work that Friday. But the last couple of times I went, I could
have fit everything I bought into one supermarket shopping bag. One of the
reasons I have always gone is the "goodies." It's less and less
cost-effective to go, every year.

I can recall not too many years ago that I would leave the hamfest with the
car dragging the ground, the trunk, back seat and even the passenger seat if
I had no riders, packed with stuff.

The stuff that I like to bring home is getting rarer and harder to find; I
already have much of what I see at the flea market; my storage space is
running low. Therefore I have become much more selective about what I bring
back.

But mostly I just don't see much there that interests me any more.

Re: [AMRadio] Dayton Hamvention 2005

2004-11-17 Thread Donald Chester

The original date for Dayton was the 3rd weekend in April. It might have
been snowed on and was often unseasonably cold, but it hardly ever got
rained out. I remember in the mid 70's one of their brochures promoting
the hamfest made it a point to claim that in 22 years, it had been rained
out only twice.

Then some genius decided to move the event to one week later, the last
weekend in April. Almost every year after that, it got rained out. I think
in was something like five rainouts in seven years. I attended several
years in a row in the midst of rain, and each time the locals said that the
week before the weather had been dry, and would have been a good weekend for
the hamfest.

Finally, they moved it to mid-May. The weather has been wamer, but it still
seems to get rained out more often than at the old date of the 3rd weekend
in April.

It isn't really a Dayton Hamvention unless there's rain at least one day.
Back in the early 90's, when it was held in April, I remember two days of
rain and Sunday with snow flurries. Hopefully, I'll be at my same spots
