[amsat-bb] SO-50 pass over FN42 at 12:25a local / 0525Z

2010-11-10 Thread Chris Danis
Was anyone working SO-50 during its pass over FN42 at 12:25a Eastern / 05:25
UTC?

I just finished constructing a WA5VJB yagi just a few hours ago. Was
listening on the downlink during the pass but heard nothing. (Didn't try
transmitting.) Maybe no one was on, maybe the downlink is shifted off
frequency slightly (I see a note of reports of this in the AMSAT Status page
for the bird), or maybe my setup is just broken (very possible -- it's all
new and I don't know what I'm doing!).

In any case, I'll be trying some other passes of FM sats tomorrow.

[amsat-bb] QRM on HO-68 on 20:57 UTC pass over UK

2010-11-10 Thread P.H.
Alan BA1DU et al,

While monitoring HO-68 with my RFSpace SDR-IP on the 20:57 UTC pass
tonight at the lower end of the passband I was very surprised to see
what looked like a FM signal. After tuning in I am able to hear
someone with what sounds like an English accent! It was definitley
coming from the satellite, as it was affected by the same doppler
shift as the SSB signals coming from it.

It sounds like the users in question have no idea they are causing
QRM, they certainly aren't calling satellite, however do sound like
amateurs and not pirates or commercial traffic. Taking doppler into
account on the downlink, I calculate that the users were transmitting
around about 145.925MHz

Did anyone else notice this?

I have an IQ recording, if anyone is interested in having a look I
could try to shrink it small enough to send - there are no callsigns
at any time during the short 5 minute recording. Also, my receive
antenna doesn't currently track, so the signal is quite weak for most
of the pass.

Is there a way under awards to see how many grid squares I have

2010-11-10 Thread Michael
A little more background. I have always wanted to receive weather satellite
images since I was a teenager. I made the Dayton trip and with the help of a
friend I was able to cover a lot. I was intrigued by the ARRL's exhibit and
talked to staff there which changed the way I viewed satellites. I always
thought they were pretty good size. I then went to the AMSAT booth asked
questions there and bought a book they recommended. I joined AMSAT when I got
home and bought a few more publications and the tracking software. That's when
the confusion started..lol

I too have been using HRD, use it for digi modes in local simplex groups here

Thanks to all! Gave me a few avenues to explore.

I can't address EME, but it can be configured for satellite operations, and
correctly supports both LotW and eQSL for satellites. Support is excellent.
In addition to a log, it also handles spotting, has a module for working
RTTY, some of the PSK modes, etc. However, you can use as much or as little
as needed, and it is very customizable. I figure I use about 10%. It is

As I recall, I used a "Y" adapter coming out of the headphone jack.
One side to my earphones, the other to my digital recorder. Made

You are correct that FM is a no go for the transponder satellites, with
the exception of using an unmodulated FM signal as CW on the uplink. You
will need some way to transmit and receive on 2m and 70cm SSB or CW.

Personally I use a pair of Yaesu 817s and an Arrow while portable, or
sometimes a single 817 for the downlink and the 857 in my truck for the
uplink. The 817 is probably the most popular for portable satellite
work. There are also many fine, older rigs on the used market. I've seen
two 2m SSB rigs for less than $100 this week on the various swap boards.

For the receive side, you can use most anything that will receive SSB or
CW, including downconverters to a 10m radio, all mode scanner type
receivers, the forthcoming AMSAT-UK Funcube Dongle SDR receiver, or even
the all mode receiver in the Kenwood F6A.

It's even possible to use a single 817 type rig half-duplex, although
it's important to keep your power low, and really helps to have
automatic Doppler tuning set up when half duplex.

The transponders are a much friendlier, slower paced and more sane place
to operate, but there is generally not the activity or diversity of
stations as on FM. On the other hand, you can work some fine DX, have
longer QSOs, and it's more of a challenge.

[amsat-bb] Working the Transponder Sats

2010-11-10 Thread Kent Frazier
It has been suggested to me that I try the transponder sats. My question is
what type of equipment would I need for this. I'm currently unable to run
any type of mast mounted antenna(s) and would prefer it be portable or
mobile if possible.

My current setup is an Icom W32-A handheld with an Elk antenna. Am I
correct in my belief that I can't work the transponder sats with an FM
radio?

Thanks
