[amsat-bb] Re: Doppler Tuning IC-821H

2011-02-07 Thread Erich Eichmann
Hello Paul,
you didn't purchase the wrong radio, hi.
SatPC32 supports CAT control of the IC-821H. A friend of mine and I myself
used the IC-821H for several years. I have just tested CAT control of this
radio once again under Windows 7, 32-bit, and Vista, 64-bit. CAT control
works flawlessly. With SSB-satellites I could tune the RX frequency with the
radio's VFO knob and the program tuned the TX Vfo to the right uplink
frequency (transparent tuning).

My settings in menu Radio Setup:
Model: IC-821H,
CAT baudrate: 19200,
Icom address: $4C (both values, default address of the IC-821H).
COM port number of the USB-to-Serial adapter,
CAT delay: 70,
Option Satellite mode checked, all other options unchecked.

I usded a C-17 compatible home build CAT interface (see sub folder Icom in
the SatPC32 program folder) and a Prolific and also a FTD single port
USB-to-Serial adapter. Both adapters work. It is most important, however,
to use Vista and Windows 7 compatible drivers.

My PC has a genuine serial port and 2 additional serial ports on a PCI card
and they work also with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.

For detailed instructions read the Hints[Radio] ... for Icom users
(SatPC32 menu ?). Regarding Vista and Windows 7 compatible drivers for the
USB-to-Serial adapters see my website www.dk1tb.de, English page
Downloads, Vistad and Windows 7 Compatiblity.

I just acquired an ICOM IC-821H as I plan to build a satellite capable
station. I cannot get HRD to tune both uplink and downlink. Seems the CAT
commands in the ICOM don't exist or are not supported.

Am I stuck turning the dial manually on this radio, or is there another
program that can tune both the 2m and 70cm on an IC-821H?

[amsat-bb] SO-67 and LOTW?

2011-02-07 Thread Helmuth Kump
Hello all, wonder if any of you have come across this.

In the FAQ for LOTW (very last item) there's a list of supported
satellites. SO-67 is on the list.

However when I want to sign the .adi that contains my SO-67 contacts I get:
Error: Invalid SAT_NAME (SO-67) on line 22

My .adi is an export from HRD Log. Anyone have any ideas?

Should've googled first! A new config file (tq6?) was necessary.

What boggles my mind is that I reinstalled TQSL with the latest

And nothing applicable returned on tq6 or configuration file in

Anyway sorry for the false alarm. Still getting used to LoTW.

[amsat-bb] G5400 elevation issue

2011-02-07 Thread Dave Webb KB1PVH
The display on the control box reads correct elevation, but on my digital
display on the Easy Rotor Controller shows erratic elevation position. I
have recalibrated it several times with no success. It won't read any
elevation until it is around 20° give or take. It also seems to have become
worse since our really cold temps set in. My best guess is the pot in the
rotor, but not sure where to start in the process.

Thanks in advance

2011-02-07 Thread w4upd
This sounds more like a problem with the calibration pot(s) within the
control box. The control box has a set for the meters and another set
for the digital/computer control of the rotator. I would expect the
meters to also read incorrectly if the pot in the rotor was a problem.

You can see the planned times on:

For the best result try to use normal FM but turn the mike gain down until
your audio sounds good.

Do not use the CTCSS tone.

Zack,

I am in the process of uploading my logs to LoTW, and I sent a request for a
certificate for KD8KSN/8 to cover my portable operations in Ohio, and I set
the begin date and left the end date blank.  After I did that I realized that

Certificates are used for the callsigns you use, not for locations you operated
from. You'll get one certificate for KD8KSN/8, and that's fine. Not
setting the
end date was a good thing. Once you have that back from ARRL and loaded
into your TQSL program, you can define as many station locations in TQSL as
needed where you used KD8KSN/8 as your call.

For me, I have one WD9EWK certificate but probably 70 or 80 different station
locations based on just that call. I have certificates for other
calls I have operated
with and station locations defined for those calls, but the one WD9EWK
certificate
has been the only one needed for my satellite operating in the continental USA.
TQSL holds all those defined station locations for all calls.

Good luck, and hope to see some matches from you in LOTW soon. Please feel
free to e-mail me directly if you have additional questions.

[amsat-bb] KD8KSN and KD8KSN/8 QSOs Now in LoTW

2011-02-07 Thread Zachary Beougher
Well, that sure was easy enough. That was one of the first times in awhile
that I have followed the instructions on something and it has actually worked!
;-)

I uploaded all QSOs that were in my log DATED **10-24-2010** TO PRESENT. Up
until Oct. 24 I used paper logs. 268 regular and 73 portable QSOs were
uploaded with only 40 matches (?). My home QTH is self explanatory, but
here is a breakdown of my portable uploads:

KD8KSN/8 – EN80sa/EM89sx – October 30, 2010 – 22 QSOs

KD8KSN/8 – EN70vb – November 29, 2010 – 7 QSOs

KD8KSN/8 – EN90ba/EM99bx – December 17, 2010 – 30 QSOs

KD8KSN/8 – EN90ba/EM99bx – January 29, 2011 – 14 QSOs

Note that I use the designator “8” after my call instead of “P.” Whenever you
work me portable, log my call+whatever designator I am in (ie. KD8KSN/4;
KD8KSN/0). Do not use /P or /M.

Please email me with any questions or if you don’t have a match when you think
you should.

Also, I am working on getting the KD8KSN/8 EN90/EM99 cards out from last
weekend. I placed the order a week ago, but I have not got a shipping
confirmation yet. I will send out an email once I mail them. Expect about 2
weeks max (hopefully).

It does not show that. Awards are given to people who want them. Having
100 or 1000 grids confirmed, while admirable, does not make your
skills any better then the person who has one or ten. There was a

[amsat-bb] Re: G5400 elevation issue

Subject: [amsat-bb] G5400 elevation issue

The display on the control box reads correct elevation, but on my digital
display on the Easy Rotor Controller shows erratic elevation position. I
have recalibrated it several times with no success. It won't read any
elevation until it is around 20° give or take. It also seems to have become
worse since our really cold temps set in. My best guess is the pot in the
rotor, but not sure where to start in the process.

Thanks in advance

Dave - KB1PVH

Hi Dave, KB1PVH

If the display on the control box reads correct elevation then the 500 ohm
pot into the rotor is OK

By the way if the digital display on the Easy Rotor Controller shows erratic
elevation probably the rear potentiometer VR4 in the rear of the control box
of the G5400 is set erratic.

Measure the DC voltage between pins 1 and 8 on the external control DIN
connector. If the pot VR4 is set correctly the voltage must be 0 volt with
elevation = 0° and 2.5 volt with elevation = 90° and 5 volt with elevation
180° i.e. with the antenna completely flipped to 180°

The potentiometer VR4 is located in the rear of the control box as shown
in the instruction manual.

Have fun

[amsat-bb] Satpc32 and Azimuth only rotors? Functional?

2011-02-07 Thread zach hillerson
I am getting closer to putting my first satellite base station together (in
lieu of the Arrow that I am currently using) and am giving serious
consideration to a fixed 15* antenna setup such as the Gulf Alpha designs.
Having never mounted antennas, rotors etc... I am a bit concerned about my less
than amazing mechanical aptitude and having to get cross-booms, Az/El rotors
etc... working correctly.

Is anyone using SatPc32 to successfully control Azimuth only rotors?  If so,
what is required to get everything working together?  I would still like to
automate the rotor and doppler control if at all possible.

On a somewhat related note - is anyone else using a setup like this (fixed
elevation) and if so, are you happy with the performance?

Thanks for any thoughts, I appreciate the input,

Zach

2011-02-07 Thread Stan, W1LE
Hello Bill,

Congrats on the new to you satellite antennas.

1. Look to the CushCraft website for documentation of each antenna.
either order parts from CushCraft or for very common items,
order from a large hardware store.

2. Verify what you have with the documentation.
Element placing on the boom, element length, etc.

3. replace all hardware with stainless steel hardware of the same size.

4. dis assemble everything, elements and the boom. clean up all joints
and treat ALL joints with NoAlox aluminum ladden grease. Reassemble.

5. VSWR test, trouble shoot as needed.
