HamSatDroid is very easy to use and can download the AMSAT Keps file.
But the output is merely text (azimuth/elevation). A map of the
footprint would be really nice. 20+ years ago Instant Track displayed a
footprint with a 20 MHz processor. Today's processors are vastly more
powerful, but no Android application displays a footprint? I guess
that's because only hams care about it...

Another useful Android application is "Grid Locator". Launch the app
and it displays the 6-digit Maidenhead Grid of the phone's location.
GPS must be enabled or it says you're in grid JJ00aa.

2011-02-25 Thread Clary, James T, Civilian
I was able to get BM55 into a few logs and BM75 into a bunch of them
today, despite the crappy weather out on the Pacific. (There were no
sigs other than my own on a morning VO52 pass covering some western
states when I was in BM65, so that one went by the wayside.) We've got
at least another day of this before the weather and seas clear up.

Here's the sked for tonight and tomorrow:

FO29 - 26/1022Z - should be in BM85

VO52 - 26/1727Z - BM95

SO50 - 26/2024Z - BM95 or CM05

AO27 - 26/2136Z - CM05

SO50 - 26/2208Z - CM05

FO29 - 27/0244Z - CM05

VO52 - 27/0420Z - CM05 or CM15

SO50 - 27/0500Z - CM05 or CM15

VO52 - 27/0555Z - CM15

FO29 - 27/1106Z - CM15

These passes occur during my work hours. I'll make 'em if possible.

AO51 - 27/0053Z - CM05

FO29 - 27/0059Z - CM05

[amsat-bb] AO-51 S-band // WIFI USB dongle as receiver?

2011-02-25 Thread ac0z
Hello to the AMSAT brain trust. I am new to satellites and have a new
person question:

 > Is there any way to utilize a WIFI (2.4 GHZ, 13cm) USB dongle (with
SMA ant. port) into a gain antenna, and successfully receive the S-band
downlink from AO-51? This is a 13cm transceiver, but I suspect the
answer is no. I already have a 24db gain dish, so I thought I would
ask. Outside of WIFI, is there anything useful I can do with this
dongle? The more conventional units (transverters, receivers, etc.) are
a bit spendy for me right now. thanks. paul ac0z

There are 2 that come to mind: HamSat Droid and DroidSat. They both do
different things and make a great combo. HamSat Droid is a satellite
prediction app and DroidSat allows you to locate the bird in the sky like a
spotter scope. So use HamSat Droid to predict the bird's pass and use
DroidSat to aim your hand held antenna!

I've seen passes of both where the ship passes into shadow during the pass. It

[amsat-bb] Re: IC-9100

2011-02-25 Thread Edward R. Cole
Time will tell if the IC-9100 = IC7600+IC910.

I am about ready to let loose of my FT-847 (maybe).

I have a Elecraft-K3 (HF/6m) + 144/28 and 1296/28
transverters. Selling the FT-847 would allow purchase of a 432/28
and maybe a 222/28 (but this is not part of the discussion re> sat radios).

Of course the K3 will not do cross-band duplex (yet), so for that I
would have to bring my FT-817 into the picture.

So how does this stack up in $$$
K3/100 ($2000) + $600 x 3 = $3500 add a couple 100w amps and you have
over the cost of a IC-9100.
How do they stack up in performance?  for satellites probably fine;
on HF? Any other problems (like birdies)??

Comparing the IC-9100 to non-sat radios is probably not fair.

I will never own one at that price or likely even half that! Even if
donated, I'd likely flip it for say a couple of 847's or TS-2000's. Even if
I wanted a NEW radio, It is not even in my radar as I'd prefer a
computer controlled receiver and transmitter. seems the Mega raido trend
has made a mis-step now with this model.

Andreas,
It must come with a free small car...Hi, Hi. Icom will have a problem
selling it for even $2000. Once again,
The manufacturer's don't listen to the Ham crowd. Did anyone ask for this

What a fund raiser that would be. Oh well, we can wish and fun about it.
Let's hope Yaesu and Kenwood get a lesson here.

The IC-9100 is far from being a bargain - one can find pristine IC-910's for
around $900, or $1500 with the 1.2 GHz module installed. In my case, I have
plenty of HF radios, so I just needed to add UHF and VHF. A TS-2000 goes
from $1600 to $2000 ...

2011-02-25 Thread Jim Jerzycke
I have both an FT-847, and a TS-790. I prefer the FT-847 for satellite
work, and the TS-790 for weak signal work. It's mostly what I'm used to,
and the '847 seems to be easier to use for satellites. The TS-790 seems
to have a better receiver, and one of these days I'll use my IF-232 to
run it with SatPC32 to see how well it works on satellites.
They're both very nice radios.

But just because something is listed as a satellite radio, why only limit it

Nick,

Yes. If you set the Flex emulation to TS-2000 it works, somewhat. For
instance, the SATPC32ISS works fine as far as controlling the rig. The
problem is that while the rig hardware is full duplex, the existing Flex
software does not support the TS-2000 satellite/full duplex mode. There are
some other issues such as the FM not working quite right. Flex is slowly
working through these issues, and when the PowerSDR version 2.1 is available
it should be great satellite rig. Flex is using SATPC32 in their testing,
so it WILL work Real Soon Now.

There aren't any satellites on 6M.

There's always the "old fashioned" solution, an HF receiver, an HF transmitter
and a pair of converters or transverters.
They're still available for the microwave bands.

There must be older 2M and 70cM multimode rigs available used ( IC211E, TS700,
IC202/404 etc) that will happily drive
transverters for the higher bands and amplifiers for their own band.

What are your choices for new? The TS2000 or the Icom 9100.

Used, now there are many more options. Hard to find anything to fault about
the Kenwood TS790, except that it doesn't do 6m.
