[amsat-bb] Re: SSB Birds fm Hawaii

2012-02-06 Thread Bob- W7LRD

Hello Robert

You would be in demand on AO-7.  AO-7 is really not difficult though can be
tricky.  Keep in mind AO-7 switches between A B modes every 24 hours at
around 2340Z, I think.   Also our JA friends can not transmit on 432mhz.
However they are on mode A.  I have tried many times to work them from CN87
(Seattle) many times, no luck.  Remember, if this were easy, everyone would be
doing it.  Schedual information can be found http://oscar.dcarr.org/index.php
.  Good luck with your efforts, I will keep an ear out for you.  Don't forget
VO-52.

I have been working the FM birds for years and now have the capability to QSO
via AO7 and other SSB sats.  As a newbie I am still learning how to find
myself,
along with overcoming the other challenges of a somewhat more difficult art.

It has been a desire of mine to work longer distances from here in Hawaii and
of
course the SSB birds offer that opportunity. As fate would have it however, I
am in
a valley with ridges of 20 degs. elevation east and west of me. Still,  It
appears that I
may be able to work as far east as Nebraska,  and Japan remains a remote
possibility.

Eventually I hope to be mobile in order to solve the above problem but in the
mean
time, I would welcome any and all QSO opportunities. I try to be on the air
during the
afternoons and evenings in Hawaii.  So, if you happen to hear an operator who
appears
to be in the embryonic stages of SSB ops, please give me a call and as
always, all tips gracefully accepted. Mahalo and 73.

[amsat-bb] Re: SSB Birds fm Hawaii

2012-02-06 Thread Bob Bruninga
Robert,

Remember also, we are looking for someone with AMSAT and AX.25 packet
experience in Hawaii for out upcoming Arctic Buoy deployment next month.

A Hawaii ground station is required to activate PCSAT-1 on an ascending pass to
configure it so that it can hear the Buoy.

We want someone fully conversant with AX.25 connections and remote-sysop
experience with typical kantronics TNC's.

[amsat-bb] Receive Pre-Amps for 70cm

2012-02-06 Thread PETER SIMONSEN

I recently purchased an M2 Satellite Eggbeater antenna kit with the intention
of working satellites from my shack. I think this antenna will work best with
a pre-amp for the 70cm band that perhaps I can put in my attic close to the
antennas. Who makes a good pre-amp for this situation to mate with my FT-8800
radio. Thanks, Peter KC2RBX

2012-02-06 Thread normn3ykf
Peter,
Assuming full duplex and no rf switching requirement (aka recieve only) my
particular choice is DEMI's series of preamps. Cost $75 built and tested. If
you're like me and don't mind a little solder smoke, and have access to test
equipment for alignment, the kit is available for 45$.
73 es see you on the birds. Norm n3ykf
PS: I use mine with a pair of quadrifiliar helix antennas.

2012-02-06 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Peter,

A 70 cm preamp is always useful! There are a lot of them out there, but my
experience is that ARR and SSB Electronics make the best. Definitely not
the cheapest, though.

http://advancedreceiver.com/page2.html

http://www.ssbusa.com/gaasfet.html

Be certain to get one which is RF switched, and which will handle your rig's
power. No matter how careful you are, you WILL transmit into it someday.
Been there, done that.

You will need to split your single antenna jack on the rig to two lines.
Almost any diplexer gives 50 db+ separation, but there are a few which are
only 30 db or so. Worth checking.

[amsat-bb] Kenwood TM251 memory battery replacement

2012-02-06 Thread John Geiger
I have a Kenwood TM251A FM radio I use on the FM satellites, and the memory
battery is going to need to be replaced. I figure sending it to Kenwood for
replacement is going to cost more than the radio is worth. The only thing the
manual says about it is to send it to Kenwood for replacement. Does anyone
have more information on replacing it yourself? How hard of a job is it, and
is the battery avaiable?

[amsat-bb] Re: Chibis-M?

2012-02-06 Thread Simon Pack

Hi,

I still receive Chibis-M (RS-39) on 435.315 in the late evenings. However,
it isn't downlinking in morse code anymore. It sounds like it is downlinking
data in a BPSK format, which I've not tried decoding.
Another point to note is that it doesn't start downlinking until a long time
into its pass. Presumably it is saving its battery power until its footprint
is over Russia. Downlinking is also not continuous.

One thing to be careful about is not to mistakenly receive Yubileiny (RS-30)
which is also using the same morse code telemetry format on 435.315, and can
sometimes be above the horizon at the same time as Chibis-M.
