2012-05-30 Thread Stefan Wagener
ESA has posted a very unique opportunity:

Wouldn't it be great if the key AMSAT organizations put a proposal together

educational outreach and training opportunities associated with it. Let's
encourage the AMSAT leadership teams to move quickly. We can do it, don't

2012-05-30 Thread Stefan Wagener
Thanks Domenico,

a quick search on the web turns out some good information about the ability
of F2IL to work satellites. He has a great record and accomplishments. A
personal email enquiring about what was going on is a good way of building
each other up and not causing unnecessary conflict. We all can jump very
quickly to the wrong conclusions and cooler heads need to prevail.

To quote Clint: "Well, I ask, WHEN did the true spirit of ham radio CHANGE
to the point where we can demean fellow hams in public message groups -
WITHOUT simply contacting an "offending" ham privately to see if we could
help them with their system?

It is okay to share frustrations, let's work to make things better for all
of us.

2012-05-30 Thread Craig Gagner
After doing a little research I think Eric is more than qualified to know
what Amateur Radio is all about and how the Ham Spirit has changed. After
working HF for over 20 years he is well aware. He has a very impressive
looking Satellite set up and I am sure he could hear his own signal quite
well. Of course some of the self proclaimed expert instructors don't think
you need any of that fancy gear and continue to encourage the bare minimum
in equipment resulting in these Alligators!

A day doesn't pass where someone is out there calling CQ and obviously can't
hear thier own signal, or anyone else for that matter. I have sent numerous
friendly e-mails with no responses, but again, a majority don't have an
e-mail listed on QRZ.

Full duplex should be the only way satellite operations are taught, and not
doing it should be considered malicious interference!

I will attempt to put W1AW on AO27 for the Friday, June 1, 1700Z and 1843Z

For those working stiffs---I hear you; I will try to make some Saturday
trips to the League in the future to accommodate those that can't work the

[amsat-bb] Ham Spirit

2012-05-30 Thread Clint Bradford
Back to Eric's original question: "Where is the "ham spirit" these days?"

Well, I ask, WHEN did the true spirit of ham radio CHANGE to the point where we
can demean fellow hams
in public message groups - WITHOUT simply contacting an "offending" ham
privately to see if we could help
them with their system?

A simple email message to the "offending" station asking if he was able to hear
the bird ... If he has had any
problems with the FM birds in the past ... and find out if he knew he was
accidentally stepping on another ham ...
THAT'S what any responsible amateur radio licensee should have done FIRST. And
THEN write up the experience
here. Something like ...

"Hey, guys and gals. Was working SO-50 earlier this week, and booming in with a
strong signal was K6LCS. That's
the good news. The bad news is that he was stepping on everyone else - as if he
could not hear the downlinks from
the bird. I called him up (his phone number is all over his Web sites) and we
both identified the problem: a shorted
earpiece cable forced him to work without his normal receive audio setup. He
profusely apologized ... and he is not
really a "repeat offender." LESSON LEARNED: Purchase quality audio accessories!"

Instead, the original message criticizes a fellow ham ... and two more fellow
hams publicly chime in with, "Way to go, Eric!" -
before finding out the facts of the matter.

Call me "old school," I guess. But I am not changing.

I'd say he couldn't hear his own downlink. That's certainly a common
problem. The best way to deal with these people is if you're within
simplex range, call them up on the downlink frequency after the pass
and give them a few pointers. I've got a couple of people
successfully working satellites that way. Education works wonders. :)

And since you know his callsign, the other way of achieving the same
is to send him an email with some friendly tips.

[amsat-bb] Re: SO-50 Interference

2012-05-30 Thread Clint Bradford
I dislike assholes in any aspect of my life. "Amateur radio" conversations
should be positive and
entertaining and educational experiences. And not a demeaning, name-calling,
childish activity.

I suppose you also sent messages to the other two guys who wrote, "Way to go -
insulting
fellow hams is OK in my book!" - to tell them the same.

But, knowing you, I am sure you did not.

And so it goes ...

"Leaving quite a legacy in the amateur radio world, indeed."

Today I wanted to use my arrow and portable to make a qso on SO-50.
M6DNU (also portable) called me but it took 5 minutes to complete
that

contact.
F2IL was constantly calling cq on top of us. Do these guys even
listen

to the downlink??
Give portable stations also a change please! We only have 2 watts of
rf

power.
Where is the "ham spirit" these days?

Each 10 seconds its transmits a short burst.
Relative easy to receive.
