[amsat-bb] AO-7 DX

2012-12-05 Thread Randy Morden
Hello All,

I was quite surprised today to work Neil, ES6DO in Estonia just before 18:00Z
on AO-7 mode B. I was listening to that pass with the hopes of working a few
UK stations I heard a few days ago, and was just about to shut the rig down at
the end of the pass, when I heard a CW station calling CQ. At first I though
it was an Irish station with an EI prefix, but two dits turned out to be three
- ES rather than EI! With less than one minute to make the contact on that
pass, it all worked out with a new grid and new DX in my log, and Neil's first
VE QSO. Many thanks Neil!

repeater amps and ATV amps (FM) but haven't been able to find any that

100-200watts. Any help would be appreciated.

[amsat-bb] AO-7 Operation

2012-11-14 Thread Randy Morden
Hello All,

I heard something interesting earlier today while monitoring an AO-7 pass above
my QTH at around 23:30Z. The mode B (U/V) transponder basically went dead, and
I heard a very odd buzzing sound in about the centre of the passband, with no
activity anywhere else in the passband. Not a typical FMing sound, but
something more akin to auroral buzzing, like on 6 metres. We have had some
great visible auroral shows at my latitude lately (57 degrees north), and I
wonder if the solar wind causing the aurora may have had an effect on old AO-7.
Did anyone else hear this? Any thoughts on what was happening? I see from
the live Oscar update web page that Russian Hams reported normal mode B
operation subsequent to my observations.

As an aside, after repair of an intermittent in the UHF finals of my ICOM 820H
and replacement of the N connector, I am fully QRV again on the birds, and look
forward to giving out grid DO16 when able.

73 to all,

Randy, VE6RGU

[amsat-bb] Duplex HTs

2010-07-26 Thread Randy Hall
Hi

I receive emails all time from guys looking for HTs to use on AO-51.
Many want duplex HTs to allow them to hear themselves coming back from
the satellite.

So, what of the current HTs provide duplex operation?

Which of the older HTs do duplex. I know my trusty FT-51 does!

Plus as a bonus, any of these come with BNC connector anymore? I
really do not like SMAs on my radios.

Thanks

Drew,

I appreciate your long-winded and detailed reply. Having purchased an S
band antenna and down converter a few days before Field Day, and missing
the single "good pass" on Sunday morning, I have been anxious to try S
band operation. Looks like there will be plenty of opportunity this
Fall. Thanks for the information, and great explanation.

maneuver.
The operation was carried out automatically, and assisted by Zvezda boosters
KD-1 and KD-2, which were switched on at 12:01 Moscow time. The operation
lasted 150 seconds.
The maneuver resulted in additional station acceleration of 2.85mps. ISS

[amsat-bb] Station Integration

2010-01-01 Thread Randy Hall
Hi,

I am looking to get my station automated again. Years ago I was running
WISP, FT-736, Yaesu Az-El rotor and TAPR Trackbox. It was a really cool
system watching it completely automate the message transfers to the
satellites. Then came along the internet..

I now use Orbitron and a TS-2000. Still have the same rotor. The TrackBox is
sitting in the garage, but could be brought back to life. I never changed
the proms for Y2K!!!

So, what is the current equipment being used to tie the tracking software to
control the rotor and radio these days?

I am not tied to Orbitron or the Trackbox, if I need to get something else
more up to date that is fine.

Thoughts about integrating my station together again?

That's exactly why I thought it would be capable of it, because its NOT in

Not the best receiver for it in my humble opinion; though , I wish it was.

Neither the FT-897 nor the FT-857 will operate in wide FM on the amateur

handhelds will go into Wide FM for use with the weather satellites in the
137 mHz band.

I would like to know if any of the radio guru's out there
Know of a way to persuade my 897D to receive in WFM on 137 Mhz?

The only place it does that now is on the FM Broadcast band ..

I would R E A L L Y like to do this ..

I emailed yaesu with the question ..
( I bet we all know the result of that )

Thanks in advance ..

And a special thanks to Mike and Tim for helping me so much on
The satellite stuff .. Been working CW and SSB on VO-52 simplex ..and
Its going great .. Was quite the lil learning curve though. Now I just
Need some a better antenna system, preamp and duplexer.

[amsat-bb] SATPC32 Problem Taken Care of

2009-10-21 Thread Randy
Never did get it to work properly in the program itself
However, someone off the list sent me a link to his own software ( very nice
software )
For controlling the rotor and it also ties into SATPC32, Orbitron, and NOVA.
( plus some others )
So all is well and its going great now..

Thanks for the replys..

2009-10-20 Thread Randy
I bought this and programmed it to my rotor system
But I can seem to get SATPC32 to work with it.

I remember someone on the list saying they had one of these ..
I hope you are reading this.

When I go to the rotor setup and select SAEBRTrackBox
Click the appropriate settings, and click ok or store ( tried both )
And restart PCSAT as recommended, and then go back to the rotor
Setup, it has toggled back to NONE for the interface..
And his instructions also say that once I restart there is supposed
To be a new program running called Server Easy Comm1 running.
Don't see that either ..

Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks..

[amsat-bb] Attn: FT-897D Owners & Brainiacs

2009-10-08 Thread Randy
Thanks to few kind and patient people, things are
Progressing in my world with HAM SAT COMM.

My SAT PC 32 is set to uplink only with the one simplex rig..
And that worked ok .. Until

Heres an interesting thing..

I turn the rig on ..
I select my satellite in SAT PC
I click on the "C" to start software control of
The transmit freq ( unless key down, as we have all learned recently,
although you can still MANUALLY adjust the
Tx freq with the main dial when transmitting ) anyways.. It adjust itself
according to the interval settings and works fine.
The RX freq stays put...if I adjust the receive, the transmit changes, I
expect that... Have had CW contacts that way. ( THANKS K9QHO)

NOW FOR THE FUN

A few seconds AFTER I TURN ON THE CLARIFIER, the RX FREQ starts updating
again with the software AND
It doesn't do it at the interval setup in the software, it just does it
about every 1.5 - 2 seconds.
Its consistant, and repeatable. If I turn the clarifier OFF, it stops.

ANYONE?? SHOW OF HANDS?? LOL

Software quirk? Rig QUIRK? COMBO?

Has anyone seen the programmer lately? LOL

Seriously , if I can use the clarifier without this happening, I think I can
have CW QSO's on
VO-52 really well with the simplex rig..

THANKS ALL IN ADVANCE

[amsat-bb] SAT PC32 / AO-7 Mode B

2009-10-04 Thread Randy
I made a couple contacts on AO-7 Mode A just fine
And when you click on CAT and look at the freq selections
For Mode A it matches the cheat sheet AMSAT sent me.

However that's not the case with MODE B freqs ..
Doesn't match the chart.. And I cant seem to make a contact. ( still )
I have the CAT cable hooked up and SAT PC32 setup ( thanks to Tim, N3TL )
And as I mentioned, Mode A worked fine..

Did something happen to the sat to shift that ? Or is it for some other
Reason that it doesn't match?

Shows up in the software just fine. I read that I have

And even then the freq shows something different until I unkey.

I am starting to think this software and my radio werent made

Really starting to regret buying this FT-897.

2009-09-26 Thread Randy
Hi all ..
  I am having trouble working AO-07 ..
Could just be newbie syndrome... But I truly
Am not sure why I cant..

I have an FT-897D, 13 element 2 meter yagi and a 11 element 432 yagi.
I can also effectively use the 2 meter yagi on 432.. Matches well
And have used it on repeaters up to 60 miles away on 440..

I use the translation table provided by AMSAT and the books..
Have those programmed into the radio as splits..

LSB 432.XXX up and USB 145.XXX down .
( mode B like this morning )
I can hear PLENTY of QSO's.
I cannot make contact with anyone ..

I even got a little desperate and pulsed my handheld
On the 432 antenna ( like CW dits ) ( harder to id that way LOL )
And tuned the receiver and cannot find my signal ..

Tell me its somehting stupid and simple LOL

[amsat-bb] G5500 Questions

2009-09-15 Thread Randy
I just finished up the cables for the rotor
And been reading thru the manual .. ( lacking a bit )

It says 5 minutes intermittent service and something
About 15 minutes rest. I assume then , that it means
5 minutes on , 15 minutes off.

Doesn't seem like it takes a whole 5 minutes to run the whole
Rotation , but wanted to know if its ok to go from one end of
The rotation to the other without stopping? Wanted to ask if that seems
reasonable?

For setup I ran the azimuth and elevation to CCW to the stop to make sure
It stopped correctly and the meter indicated correctly, then went the other
way to full meter deflection, to the
Stop and adjusted the Full Scale adjustment for full scale. That's all
there is
To it? Whats the voltage output adjustments for?

One more thing .. On a side note.. I thought it was cheesey to have "radio
shack"
Type terminal strips on a 600.00 rotor to connect the rotor cable too ...
Why not have a couple connectors there? Even my old Wilson WR-500 had a
connector. Lol

I assume even with 2 small yagis on this rotor, I will now have to guy the
mast due to the
Added weight of the rotor on the mast ?
( better safe then sorry LOL )

Thanks everyone ..

Thank you Bob...

You always have a refreshing, clear, informative response for any
inquiry
into your systems.

The fact that you recognize a design error publicly reassures us
neophytes
that new designs are built considering past events.

It's always a pleasure hearing one of your explanations.

2009-08-25 Thread Randy

I keep hearing that it is dead ( the thread ), but someone it keeps going ..
:(

""Either we make history, or we complain about it. The choice is ours!
This thread is dead!""

Cant speak for everyone, but I think its gone waaay past the dead horse
Stage. And is not doing much for the list as when I see anymore posts
On it I just skip over it.. Can we please let it go and agree to disagree?

[amsat-bb] Best source for current satellite status

2009-08-22 Thread Randy
Is the AMSAT status page the best source for ALL possible
Amateur radio satellites that we can access?

I got a new 440 yagi and cant find a satellite to test on ..
I know AO-51 would be good, but not in that mode untiul Monday.

And I heard that some of the older satellites only run off the solar array
So nitetime passes are unusable?

My capability here is only 2 meter / 70 cm FM. ( for now anyways. )

Thanks for help and input..

[amsat-bb] Re: ISS future?

2009-08-19 Thread Randy
First of all, thanks for all the replies.
Where I got that info was off the ISS FAN CLUB site
And was from some one that seemed to be knowledgeable..
But must have been opinion as well ..

Trust me when I say that I hope it is around MUCH MUCH
Longer .. I would like to be able to work thru It long into
My retirement which is in 5 ish years.. And aee them do some
Other amateur radio projects, like a constant running SSTV system.
More then one radio .. Things like that .. :)

Again, thanks for everyone's thoughts ..
Always welcomed and muchly appreciated

[amsat-bb] ISS future?

2009-08-18 Thread Randy
""" We have 5-6 years left of ISS. We need to make the best of what little
time we have left. Everyone needs to work harder, better and faster. I
would hate to see those remaining 11 unused antennas go to waste when ISS
burns up."""

Ok , label me ignorant .. But is it that difficult to boost its orbit? I
guess I need a techie explaination ..
Heck .. If its going to just burn up .. Then just before it gets to the
point off no return, then take those
Huge solar panels to the moon .. LOL or take some of the modules to the
moon ..

Whats going to replace the space station? The lunar base?

Anyways... Someone explain to me please lol

Cheers

Pollux Catalog Number 35693 and CASTOR Catalog Number 35694 have been added
to the AMSAT KEPs this week.

I am not sure of the Catalog Number for Dragonsat (BEVO-1 and
AGGIESAT-2) because AF Space Command had not yet listed in recent launches.
Does someone know the Dragonsat Catalog Number?

[amsat-bb] Is HRD Version 5 Released yet?

2009-08-06 Thread Randy
Is HRD Version 5 Released yet?

Randy - N2CUA

"" Gotcha! You are correct. maybe the independences that were discussed with
5.x will take care of that problem. It would be nice to bring up just the
satellite portion only. I have been so use to using WISP32 since my SATGATE
days that I use it most of the time except on my newer radios. HRD indeed is
very good and looks even more promising for the future. I have downloaded
the 5.x beta version but have yet to install it to see how it does.

Regards,

Reid, W4UPD""
