Thank you to everyone who responded to my Dayton request. My next step
in my Dayton adventure will be to get on the list. I am a new kid on
the block with regards to satellites. For 50 years I kept thinking that
it was impossible for me to work through a satellite. One day I got up
enough nerve to try. OMG, talk about excited. My first contact through
AO-51 (R.I.P.) was better than my first novice contact in 1961 when I
was 11 years old. I have good shoes but I'm afraid I will need a
scooter due to some serious nerve issues. HA, HA, reserved that too. I
am dressed up (official AMSAT shirt and name badge too) and ready to go.

[amsat-bb] Re: Dayton

2011-05-23 Thread Stephen E. Belter
Richard,

did CAMSAT have anything realistic to say about HO-68 ?

Yes, Alan Kung, BA1DU and CEO of CAMSAT was one of the speakers at the AMSAT
Forum. He reported that HO-68 is suffering from a bad relay or relay driver
that is used to switch from the beacon to the transponder. The likelihood of
recovery is low, but not zero. As my schedule permits, I plan to post Alan's
very informative presentation on the AMSAT web site. Watch for an announcement
from ANS (the AMSAT News Service).

Here is the explanation from Alan's slide. Since I have a copy of his
presentation, these are exact quotes, not my interpretation:

-- The current situation is the transponders will be difficult to switch the RF
PA from beacon mode to transponder mode

-- The RF relay or its drive circuit is failing, it is a stick relay.
Probability of success of switch is probably a few tenth

-- On the other hand, up to now the both solar and lithium-ion batteries are in
very nice condition

-- The exhibitions of the thermal-control, onboard flight computer and TTC are
also excellent.

Those repeaters have been suggested by AMSAT in the past because they

Don't overlook the various events described on the AMSAT web site. The
Thursday night gathering and Friday banquet are particularly good times
to meet and hob-nob with your fellow satellite users.

Those repeaters have been suggested by AMSAT in the past because they
are close to the Fairborn hotel where AMSAT has its room block and
because the repeater owners have welcomed us.

Setting the record straight, however, they do not belong to DARA; they
are run by the Upper Valley ARC.

 Chuck,

Nominally, there are a couple of DARA repeaters which are suggested
 for
 AMSAT:

 145.410 MHz -600 KHz 118.8 Hz Pl
 442.375 MHz +5 MHz 118.8 HZ Pl

I monitor them when driving around, but don't hear much AMSAT- specific
traffic. Friendly folks though! Inside the arena, I don't even
 try, due to
 the intermod and general din.

I plan to attend Dayton this year (first time since 1981) and would
 like to
meet some of those that I've contacts with on the satellites.
I was wondering if there might be an agreed on 2m or 70cm frequency
(other than the normal simplex frequencies) that has been
 established for
 our group?

Hope to see many of you in Dayton!

 Chuck, KM9U

I picked up one of the 100 that Alinco released this morning. I'll put
together a review as soon as I get home.

2009-05-15 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
I picked up one of the 100 that Alinco released this morning. I'll put
together a review as soon as I get home.

I picked up one as well, early in the morning. Need to see if any of
the Alinco dealers have accessories for it. Nice little radio, and it
is a cross-band full-duplex (for 2m/70cm - did not test with 1.2 GHz)
HT as advertised. Tuning steps as small as 5 kHz on all bands
means that - with a suitable antenna, and probably an amplifier - it
could be made to work on AO-51's L-band FM uplink. Dayton price
is $299, much better than I had expected. In Japan, Alinco's MSRP
is at 57000 yen (about US$ 600), so I thought it would be closer to
$400 even here at Dayton.

Without accessories, I disabled the full-duplex capability as not to
cause feedback on one AO-27 pass I tried with it this afternoon. I
stood on the Indiana/Ohio state line, down the street from my motel
(west of Dayton, near I-70), and tried it with an Elk log periodic.
Separate knobs for volume and VFO on each band are just like the
IC-W32A. The receiver may not be as sensitive as the IC-W32A,
or it seemed like that this afternoon. I'll play with it more, to get a
better idea of how it stacks up against other radios I've used.

I already received one comment via e-mail after that AO-27 pass
this afternoon related to the new HT. It mentioned that my audio
was low and sounded compressed. The HT has a mic gain menu
setting from 1 to 4 - 1 is quiet, 4 is loud per the manual. Out
of the box, it was at 3. It has already been moved up to 4, ready
for the next time I get on the birds with it.

73!
