[android-developers] Re: Getting user's phone number
I am fairly sure that this is exactly the old phone number on the 2nd cellular line I once had. I think I am using that phone's SIM card, and that a few years back T- Mobile simply re-associated the new phone number (my current one) with the card's IMSI number. If such associations are kept external and are thus not visible from the handset, there may not be another way to determine the actual phone number. [android-developers] Read/write files on the device SD card from a desktop/laptop application
Hi. I need to write a desktop application (let's say under Windows to start with), which needs to access the Android device SD card in read and write mode, so that the application can upload/download files, and create/delete folders on the remote device. Lately, I had a guess by using the Windows ADB driver, set the device in "USB debugging" mode, and run from a Windows machine "adb -d pulll/ push" commands. The problem is that the id of the Linux OS when using "adb -d" is "shell", who is not granted any privilege in order to write/read the "/sdcard" folder. My question is: 1. is it the right approach? In order to read/write files on the SD card of an Android device (over the air or via a USB cable, no matter) from a desktop/laptop machine, are there other options? 2. if this solution makes sense, do you know a way of either "adb shell" on the device with a more privileged login, or lessen the "/ sdcard" folder permissions, so that "shell" can read/write on it? Thank you for your attention and support. Regards, Édouard --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. Thank you Romain. Since I'm not a G1 owner (leaving in France, you know what I mean :), didn't know that, when USB-plugged, the Android device was recognized as a usual USB storage (this is what I understand from your answer). 1. I guess that the mounted volume is the "/sdcard" folder, right? 2. What is the Android Linux login that will be applied when writing files onto the device, please? [android-developers] Re: Read/write files on the device SD card from a desktop/laptop application
If you plug the device, it is mounted as USB mass storage indeed, and the mounted volume root is /sdcard. I have no idea however what Linux user is used to access the sdcard. But that doesn't really matter, it works :) On Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 2:05 AM, elDoudou <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Thank you Romain. > > Since I'm not a G1 owner (leaving in France, you know what I mean :), > didn't know that, when USB-plugged, the Android device was recognized > as a usual USB storage (this is what I understand from your answer). > > 1. [android-developers] Re: Unlocked access to wifi app store? Reflashing the firmware?
Another thing to consider is that Android will not be limited to the G1 phone. If you are looking for a pure development machine, there are rumours that the OpenMoko Freerunner (which does not have G3) will soon be able to run Android. That is certainly a more open phone than the G1 will ever be. Others will follow. Ludwig 2008/10/30 David Erickson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Hi everyone, a couple questions relating to the G1. Hi I looked at the adb logcat, and it does not says much, as it is not crashing in my code what surprises me, is that it is actually crashing in a class called "DexFileClass" which I hadn't heard of... Also, I looked at the View constructor, and again, it doesn't says too much, apart from the fact that you can call the constructor with 1, 2, or 3 parameters: (Context context), (Context context, AttributeSet attrs), or (Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyle) I have tried them all, and it keeps crashing... I googled for DexFileClass, and it says something like a zip equivalent... and it fails when uses my custom view: the actual babelView source code is at: /babel/src/com/google/android/ babel/babelView.java Thanks again, and sorry if it doesn't make sense... [android-developers] Re: Sending email
Hey, that did it! I set the the mime type to 'message/rfc822' and it worked right away. Brings up the default mail application with the fields that I specified populated. I had been trying to send it with a mime of text/plain and text/html. I thought that by specifying an EXTRA_EMAIL it would fire the right broadcast receivers, but I guess the mime type is what counts. Thanks again! [android-developers] No audio picker activity?
Hello. Did I miss something, because, when attempting to run an intent with the action "Intent.ACTION_PICK" and the type "audio/*" (and with a SD card present with audio files on it), I get a "ERROR/ AndroidRuntime(1016): android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: No Activity found to handle Intent { action=android.intent.action.PICK type=audio/* }"? I'm very surprised that the SDK does not come with a sound selector, because this is not the case for the image selector (with a type set to "image/*")... If this is the case, do you a know a library which provides such a sound picker, please? Thank you. When I do this the ScrollView won't scroll. What can I do to fix this? This is inside an AbsoluteLayout. [android-developers] Suggestion
I apologize if this is the wrong enviroment for this, but I have a suggestion for all the people who are developing apps for the G-1. For some reason, unlike every other phone out there, this phone DOES NOT turn the backlight on when a message/email/IM arrives. Most phones will turn their backlight on for 3-5 secs to notify you that a message has arrived. The G-1 does not. So you're basically forced to check your phone every few mins if you're in a loud enviroment where you can't hear/feel the audible or vibrate alert. If anyone could develop a way to make the backlight come on for (x) amount of time when there is an alert, I think alot of people would be grateful. Thanks, and if this is in the wrong place, I apologize again. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. Danny, The G1 is aimed at end users, not system developers. For user security reasons the G1 will only accept properly signed system images. I'm not sure, in this case, who 'owns' the key, whether it is the carrier or the manufacturer, but one or both of them handle insuring system images are signed. [android-developers] Terminating an application?
Hi, When our application is started, our main Activity comes alive. In the emulator, how do you "kill" the application? It seems my Activity is living forever. [android-developers] Re: why would android call oncreate when flipping the keyboard
Think of it this way. If the orientation is flipped, the layout has to be rebuilt to match the new screen dimensions. The only way you might be able to disable it is if you were to fix the orientation for the screen in the Manifest file. As most people on here are going to tell you: You need to handle your app restarting anyway, because there are more things than just keyboard flips that will kill your app. So think of it as a notice that, yes, you do need some robust onPause()/onStop() methods for saving and restoring state. And flipping the keyboard is a debug "feature" that means you don't have to simulate the app suddenly dying for no reason. [android-developers] Re: why would android call oncreate when flipping the keyboard
It's also a way to automatically load configuration-specific resources. This makes using alternative layouts (layout-land, layout-port, etc.), drawables, strings, etc. very easy. All the standard applications work this way, it's not very difficult to handle, and it makes your app a lot more flexible and future proof. [android-developers] Re: Terminating an application?
The user doesn't, the system handles this automatically. That's what the activity lifecycle (especially onPause/onStop/onDestroy) is for. No matter what you do, do not put a "quit" or "exit" application button. It is useless with Android's application model. This is also contrary to how core applications work. Note that when the user presses Back, the Activity is destroyed. [android-developers] Re: Terminating an application?
Hi Romain Guy, Ok so we never put an "exit app" interface for users - what happens in this case: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); if (m_thread == null) { m_thread = new Thread() { public void run() { while (m_run) { Log.d("*", "hello..."); Thread.sleep(5000); } } }; m_thread.start(); } } This app just creates a background thread which runs forever. When I hit the back button etc, I can see that the thread is still alive even though the Activity is no longer visible. If I start the app again, I can see that m_thread is already initialized - So in my case, I should listen for onDestroy() and terminate the thread there? [android-developers] Re: adb devices showing device offline
Al - I am running on XP, and seeing ADB behaving rather erratically with my G1. It will sometimes show it online, as it should, sometimes show it offline, and sometimes show multiple (2-10) instances of it, all offline. Killing and restarting the server seems to render it temporarily sensible, but only temporarily. It rarely works for long enough to start a debug session from Eclipse, and often hangs Eclipse if I look at the Devices tab. I have no idea how to fix it, but it seems to me there is probably something adrift in the G1 device driver. I'll let you know if I find any more. [android-developers] Re: Terminating an application?
> So in my case, I should listen for onDestroy() and terminate the > thread there? Well, that depends. They're aren't many reasons for you to be executing in your Activity when it is not visible. You should stop all threads when you receive onPause(). If you have background processing, this should be done in a Service, and perhaps a remote one so that the process hosting your Activity can be killed, and leave your Service to do whatever it needs to do. This reminds me of the issue where the email client refuses to accept self-signed certificates. [android-developers] Re: No audio picker activity?
Video isn't supposed to happen, and given mobile tech at the moment I don't know of a phone that does support it. The BW requirements are probably too high to manage anything at a decent framerate. Picture capturing is available if you use the Camera API. Search for Megha's CameraApiTest.zip file for a rough idea of how it works. Screen capture is a bit weird, and I would imagine you would have to find a handle to the actual screen and create a service to manipulate that. Without function keys, you might have a time successfully doing that though. Audio is through the Media APIs. It's decently documented and has an example, unlike Camera.
