yes! pairing is happening fin, but showing "Paired but not
connected".Also when i check the class on adb shell following is the
output

# hciconfig -a
hciconfig -a
hci0:   Type: BR/EDR  Bus: USB
BD Address: 00:15:83:15:A3:10 ACL MTU: 339:8 SCO MTU: 128:2

HCI Version: 2.0 (0x3)  Revision: 0xc5c
LMP Version: 2.0 (0x3)  Subversion: 0xc5c

Is it because of the Class I am not able to receive any file on Set
top Box over bluetooth?
I am not able to change the class of the device using

#hciconfig hci0 class 0x5a020c

what could be the issue?

thanks,

[android-developers] Re: How to display search button in actionbar on tablet (app minSdk = 8)

2011-10-10 Thread Jean-Michel
Hi Mark,

I cannot get "android:showAsAction" to be recognised/accepted in my
project (minSDK = 8, targetSDK = 11).

Eclipse tells me : "error: No resource identifier found for attribute
'showAsAction' in package 'android'".
Is that supposed to work with projects below 11?

That would mean that application with minSDK below 11 cannot do search
on tablets? Cannot be right? I must be doing something wrong
somewhere.

> > - I am using search to trigger a custom  action in a custom activity
> > (still like a search, but not really a search).

Think about a navigation application with some POIs in the DB. On
search, I am allowing the user to search POIs in the neibourghood,
indicating distance and bearing...

> > - furthermore I am using long press on serach as well.
Like the above, but this time, the user is so much in a hurry that
they just want to choose amongst the nearest POIs, no type, no actual
search (because it is better than crashlanding ;)).

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Venumadhav,

this is out of scope of this group. I would suggest you "go" to

Good luck ! Frank

[android-developers] [SOLVED] Real Multi touch in Android - Going Open Source!!!

2011-10-10 Thread Asim
Hey Everyone,

I've been working on a project to improve android's multi touch
capability. The droid has really poor binding between touch events and
views. I've worked around its drawbacks to create something that works
like "microsoft surface".

Here's a video of what I've made. Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5w8EDM3Sgc

I've also decided to go open source with this project so that everyone
can benefit from my work. If you're interested in taking this project
forward, visit my blog @
http://blog.asimmittal.net/blog1.php/tech/android/real-multitouch-on-android-andash-going-open-source

Thanks

[android-developers] Re: HTC and LG haven't implemented Android in the right way

2011-10-10 Thread bdk
for a brighter result, try to use use additive blending:

 glBlendFunc(GL_SRC_ALPHA, GL_ONE)

e.g.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/393785/how-to-setup-blending-for-additive-color-overlays

and yes, alpha should be in the png -> texture.

what do you mean by "all the data"?
In android, JNI is nothing special at all. use GetFieldID to access

[android-developers] How to remove the black space between the tittle bar and the first element of a LinearLayout?

2011-10-10 Thread saex
share [fb] share [tw]

I have a linearlayout, wich the first element is a imageview header,
and the second element is a gridview.

It works fine, but i have a erroneal black space of 25px (more or
less) between the android tittle bar and the header of the app, wich
is the first element of the linearlayout

Whi i got that space? the only way i find to remove it is to put this
line: ll.setPadding(0, -25, 0, 0);

This is the full code:

public class MainGrid extends Activity {
private GridView myGridView;
private ImageAdapter myImageAdapter;
private ImageView header;

public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

LinearLayout ll = new LinearLayout(this);
ll.setOrientation(LinearLayout.VERTICAL);
ll.setGravity(Gravity.CENTER);
ll.setPadding(0, -25, 0, 0);
header = new ImageView(getApplicationContext());
header.setImageResource(R.drawable.header_acc);

myGridView = new GridView(this);
myImageAdapter=new ImageAdapter(this);
myGridView.setAdapter(myImageAdapter);

ll.addView(header);
ll.addView(myGridView);
setContentView(ll);
}

Hi,

Can you share your xml file? Well, you can also see the Graphics view
of your xml file and see how your view will look like on the layout.

Thanks,

That could also be a blank title bar. Use
android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar.Fullscreen" in
manifest.xml file for that particular activity and that gap will be
gone.

2011-10-10 Thread David Goldfarb
Never mind. I reset the phone. My kids and I will need to re-earn a bunch
of hard-won game levels, but no more harm than that.

(Still curious, though... is there some way I could have recovered the
phone).

Also, Google folks, there's a real bug lurking here... the phone should not
have let apps steal so much memory that a reboot was impossible.

Adjust your *build target* to 11. In Eclipse, this is in project
properties. Outside of Eclipse, it's in one of those properties files.

Well, that's still search. Just because you happen to be searching
POIs and not a list of lorem ipsum words doesn't mean it's not search.

Long-press may be difficult. AFAIK, you can't find out about long
presses on options menu items.

No.

You don't.

When the BroadcastReceiver needs a GPS fix, it will need to call
startService() to have a Service register the listeners and run until
a GPS fix arrives or some timeout condition occurs (e.g., user is in
an underground facility and cannot get a GPS signal). At that point,
the service can:

-- unregister the location updates listener
-- do whatever work you needed to do with the GPS fix, probably on a
background thread
-- call stopSelf() to get rid of the service once the work is complete

If the BroadcastReceiver in question is one triggered by AlarmManager
and might be waking up the phone, you have the added complexity of
ensuring that the device will stay awake while all this is going on.

[android-developers] Using drawable resources efficiently

2011-10-10 Thread dashman
I've got a ListView and for each item I display a selector image
button
defined similar to below:

 http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android";>

I thought I could load the drawable from the resource file once and I
would assign the drawable to each item in the list.

That doesn't work because it seems all the items are sharing the
same instance and causes problems. When clicking on one - all
of the image buttons hilight.

My question is - is loading a drawable from the resource for each
item inefficient. If so any alternative suggestions?

Thanks.

There is no SOAP support built into Android. You are welcome to
consider third-party SOAP solutions, such as kSOAP2.

[android-developers] Re: textView Clears on Rotation

2011-10-10 Thread King Salamon
Thank you everyone for the great insight on this issue. I tried the
simple -down and dirty workaround by adding
android:configChanges="orientation|keyboardHidden"
to the activity tag in the manifest. This did in fact work as the data
persisted after rotation.

However, as many have pointed out, this is not really a viable, long
term solution, and a better fix would be to store the data either
using shared preferences, a database, a file, or the onSaved instance
method.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get any of these to work! Can anyone
provide a code sample with a very simple example -perhaps just one
textview element that can keep its data using one of the above
methods?

Thanks in advance

[android-developers] Waking the screen after PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK

2011-10-10 Thread Pinheiro
I've done an app that must work in the background fetching messages
from a web site that must never sleep. For that I'm using
PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK, let the screen turn off and wake it when there is a
new message. Here's some code:

--
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
   pm = (PowerManager) getSystemService(Context.POWER_SERVICE);
   wl = pm.newWakeLock(PowerManager.PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK |
PowerManager.ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP  "screenOff");
   wl.acquire();

// on the URL reading method:
while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
if (!pm.isScreenOn()) { // There is a message, turn the screen
on
pm.userActivity(SystemClock.uptimeMillis(), false);
Log.i(TAG,""Screen on");
... do stuff

--

This has two problems:
1) The screen doesn't turn on, as expected (although the code is run,
including the Log.i)
2) How to prevent the appearance of the default lock screen? That is,
how can it jump directly to my app after the screens turns off and the
users touches a button or the screen?

I've tried to (re)acquire the wakelock to turn the screen on but that
doesn't work.
Thanks in advance!

Huh? Your "effects on the battery" are already there with what you're
trying to do. The CPU is on regardless, and you want the screen on
regardless.

> 1) The screen doesn't turn on, as expected

I am not sure why you expect the screen to turn on when you
specifically told Android not to turn the screen on, by using
PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK.

Poke around in KeyguardManager -- I think there's something in there for this.

 Well, at least the screen is off and I don't have to make a screen
saver (don't know if LCD burn-in is still a problem?) ;-)

 I want it to turn off automatically until a message is received or
the user touches something.
 As I said, reading the docs PowerManager.ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP and a
new acquire() *should* solve the problem but doesn't.

[android-developers] Re: Smart Idea

2011-10-10 Thread Oli
How about an interactive tour guide system. Could be places of
interest for tourism, or even just labelling departments in an
academic institution. Scan the code and get taken to some video /
multimedia guide on the target. I can see that sort of thing being
quite cool for students on an open day - give them free reign to walk
the halls learning about the various projects / classes on the go.

The interface itself shouldn't be a massive problem, the time'll be
spent creating the content.

Not if you are using PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK. You need a FULL_WAKE_LOCK. As
the documentation states for ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP:

"These flags have no effect when combined with a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK."

[android-developers] Re: Can we 'include' a xml into another preference xml by file? and by jar(another package)?

2011-10-10 Thread Build account
First thank you for your reply.
(Beside that my questions, I've been found some workaround and
restrictions on adt env.)

1. Right...thank you for your reply. That was only way...
but as far as we know that addPreferencesFromResource() is deprecated
and
some time I want to keep my source in an absolute path to maintain
projects.

2. Hmm, as far as I found that is impossible to use preference xml in
jar file.
I thought that include or call-through addPreferencesFromResource() or
etc-
a pref XML which in a jar file.
But now I'm supposing that also impossible.

If I know any thing wrong, please let me know.

Thanks!

[android-developers] time picker: soft keyboard problems: cannot read time

2011-10-10 Thread John Goche
Hello,

I am having the following problem with the timepicker. When I use
the plus and minus signs to update the time everything works fine
but when I use the soft keyboard I cannot read the new value from
the time picker.

Basically the problem I am having is described here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3380761/how-can-i-capture-when-time-changes-in-a-timepicker-if-the-keyboard-is-being-used

However I tried the following:

and the following:

this.timePicker.setOnTimeChangedListener(new OnTimeChangedListener() {

  @Override
  public void onTimeChanged(TimePicker view, int hours, int minutes) {
System.out.println(hours);
System.out.println(minutes);

  }
});

with no luck (I don't see the listener being called when I update the time
on the buttons).
Same goes for the date picker.

What am I doing wrong?

I really appreciate your help on this issue,

John Goche

In Android, "deprecated" means "we will support it as long as we can
but we think there may be a better option". In the case of
addPreferencesFromResource(), it is your only option for pre-Honeycomb
devices, if you wish to use PreferenceActivity.

You do not package resources in a JAR file, at present.

[android-developers] Re: Can NOT upload program on Windows 7

2011-10-10 Thread Heuristic
Of course this is to upload my apps to Android Market developer's
program listing.
After you update your program (app), you want to upload it to your
program listing so that your users can
upgrade the program. Somehow it does not work on my Windows 7 now.
I indeed encountered many problems on Windows 7. I can't use debugger
of Eclipse on Windows 7 now.
Since I have been quite familiar with Android development, debugger
has become not so critical to me now.
But, it's still a mystery to me that Eclipse debugger no longer works
now.
(It does not stop at any breakpoints I set.)

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: time picker: soft keyboard problems: cannot read time

2011-10-10 Thread Studio LFP
Hey John,

You've run into the focus bug (or feature) with the TimePicker. It doesn't
update the time put in by a keyboard until it loses focus.

Try tossing a TimePicker.clearFocus() in the mix somewhere. If you use it in
a dialog, call it on the TimePicker view when you go to dismiss the dialog
and read the values after the clearFocus(). If it is somewhere else, you can
also use the requestFocus() on other views to pull it away and then read the
TimePicker.

That really really is not possible. You can drop from a FULL_WAKE_LOCK
to a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK easily enough, but then you will not receive
any user input ("touches the screen or button") once you are on the
PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK.

It's not. It's trying to get user input that is your problem. Please
allow the user to simply use the power button, like the user is
already used to, and your problem becomes much simpler.

[android-developers] Re: How to display search button in actionbar on tablet (app minSdk = 8)

2011-10-10 Thread Jean-Michel
This is proving much harder than I thought...

Basically, in order to show a search item in the action bar (or any
item) I need to set "showAsAction" in my menu.

In order to do that, I need to build with SDK >= 11.

If I build with SDK >=11, I am at risk of including some code that
will fail badly on SDK 8 to 10 devices...

I have tried the API Analysis plugin from the adt addons (http://
code.google.com/p/adt-addons/), but for some reason, it does not seem
to work.

Other people talk about a dupplicatte build ant task that would build
against minAPI, but that is late in the process (in my case after
comitting code to version control).

It feels like the way Google are managing upward compatibility is
fairly lightweight. I wonder how other people are doing.

I am definitely not the only one trying to build an application that
would run from FROYO to HONEYCOMB and that would have a search button!

Please help ;).

Hence, you need to test your app on older devices/emulators. Do not
write production code without writing associated tests and running
those tests on all relevant environments -- you should be doing this
regardless of your build target, feature set used, etc.

Re: [android-developers] Using drawable resources efficiently

2011-10-10 Thread Studio LFP
I don't think this works for a ListView when using setBackgroundDrawable().
At least I've not gotten it to work when calling mutate() at every point
possible.

Is there a trick to get this to work?

I didn't load mine from XML, but created it programmatically. Here are the
times I called it and it hasn't worked:

1. Right after creation.
2. Right before passing it to setBackgroundDrawable()
3. A few times in between
4. All of the above.

I just went back to doing a drawable for each view in the ListView.

Re: [android-developers] close application

2011-10-10 Thread John Goche
I think the poster means that sometimes when the application
exits it is still running. The solution is to open the Settings application
and go to Applications -> Manage Applications -> Force Stop. I don't
know of a way an application can request it be completely dropped
from memory when a user closes it, not that I see any reason why
one would want such behavior.

[android-developers] ghost presses phone and emulator buttons :p

2011-10-10 Thread John Goche
Hello,

This may sound funny, but sometimes when I run my application it is
as though a ghost is pressing the buttons on the screen launching
intents and what not. I'm not sure there is anything that can be done
about it, but I thought it would be worth asking if anyone else has seen
anything like it.

Seriously now... anyone seen anything like this?
I suspect somehow events get queued up while making
sqlite database calls when going from screen to screen
and then get fired at my activities all at once pressing
buttons and what not.

Regards,

John Goche

It could be that the Intents are from background services and tasks from

Re: [android-developers] Using drawable resources efficiently

2011-10-10 Thread Studio LFP
After additional testing, I've confirmed that the mutate() option doesn't
allow the use of one Drawable on multiple view under the following
conditions unless there is a trick to it that I'm missing.

1. Using a CursorAdapter with a ListView (Using newView and bindView,
haven't tried with getView as it would take a rework of code)
2. GradientDrawable created programmatically (the only way you can do it and
customize the gradient colors on the fly)
3. GradientDrawable assigned with setBackgroundDrawable()
4. ListView items having different heights and/or widths

Maybe the "state" of the drawable doesn't include the height and width of
the object, but there isn't really anything that shows what is included in
the "state". Seeing that the alpha was included, one would have thought
things like size would have also been included.

I'd like to go to reusable Drawables as it would simply things, so if anyone
has a viable solution, that would be great.

[android-developers] Buffer issues with the Droid Bionic?

2011-10-10 Thread Nathan
Based on some stack traces I've seen, it appears that the Droid Bionic is
having the same problem we've seen in the HTC Thunderbolt in the past - that
of using a 2 megabyte buffer by default on HttpClient.

The failures are happening in a third party library that isn't open source,
but I can confirm they are using DefaultHttpClient and not specifying a
buffer size.

Based on that, it appears that this sort of stupidity is being perpetuated
instead of nipped in the bud.

What other devices are going to have this problem?

Nathan

[android-developers] Re: Scenario where initLoader() does not call onLoadFinished()

2011-10-10 Thread Jeremy Drake
This sounds suspiciously like the issue I am having
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/ca3a0c174d284263

I was able to reproduce the bug with pushing a new activity in my own
app, which uses an AsyncTaskLoader instead of a CursorLoader.

Hopefully somebody familiar with the Fragment/FragmentManager/Loader/
LoaderManager code will reply to one (or both) of these threads with
some additional insight. I'm planning to enter a bug/issue in the
next day or two if I do not hear anything to the contrary.

You may want to try setting a breakpoint around the time you call
initLoader, and see if the LoaderManager's mDestroyed member is true.
This is what led me to believe that the issue is with the lifetime
management of the loader manager.

[android-developers] customizing timepicker appearance

2011-10-10 Thread John Goche
Hello,

Is there a way to customize the appearance of the time picker
without having to write your own widget instead? I would like
to use drawables to do so. The following site shows how
the timepicker constituents are drawables of some sort
but does not go about telling whether you can use your own:

[android-developers] GL-related Crash on Xoom/Tab 10.1 requiring removal of battery or shell reboot?

2011-10-10 Thread Robert Green
Isn't this that really awful GL-related bug I've been talking about

worse yet that it's nearly unrecoverable to tablet users that can't

ADB.

[android-developers] Re: How to display search button in actionbar on tablet (app minSdk = 8)

2011-10-10 Thread Jean-Michel
I do fully agree with the process, but apparently, with these
requirements (supporting x to honeycomb), we are cornered with using
build targets *above* the minSdk level which is really begging for
troubles.

Google dropped the ball at the last hurdle.

If the XML code for tablets (showAsAction, for example) would have
compiled with lower SDKs, we could have kept "low" build targets and
be sure that the application will run and compile from the low end of
the supported range.

This is still a liability at runtime, but we can exclude it from
loading with resource qualifiers.

This way, and with the compatibility package, developpers would have
developed 3.0 compatible application much easier and much safer as
well.

This is really disapointing.

try to draw a bitmap on your canvas using this paint:

Setting antialias to false seems weird. But surprisingly it works!!

Re: [android-developers] Android Benchmark

2011-10-10 Thread Kristopher Micinski
There are android profiling tools, as well, if you would like to do that.

A benchmark is more application specific, you're just not using the
concept correctly. It makes sense to benchmark some type of
application, but applications in general, perhaps you are asking about
application profiling?
