[android-developers] Best practice to seed localization data in Android

2016-12-08 Thread Karthik Sirasanagandla
Hi,

I got a couple of questions. I'd appreciate your help or pointers in this
regard based on your experience.

1. What is the Best Practice to seed localization data to Sqlite3 DB in
Android?

   -

   2. Is there any precautions one should take care, given that this
localization data (that is in a foreign language like say, Urdu, Hindi,
Japanese, etc.) could be displayed in custom fonts in the UI?

Thanks in advance.

Karthik

[android-developers] Linking SDK Manager to Android Studio

2016-05-21 Thread Karthik
Hey,

I'm new to creating apps and all... since i have a slow internet i
downloaded the .zip files of both android studio and sdk *separately*. i
have installed jdk too. i have android studio up and running but i'm not
able to link it with the sdk manager. I did go to "Configure>Project
Defaults> Project Structure and chose the path where all my sdk tools are..
and clicked apply but it just doesn't get linked!

Now i haven't downloaded all the sdk tools but i do have android
marshmallow fully and "android sdk tools"; "android sdk platform-tools";
"android sdk Build-tools" [the first 3 listed in d manager], "Android
Support Library"; "Intel x86 Emulator Accelerator (HAXM Installer)"; and
Google USB Driver.

I use a Windows 7 32-bit computer.

Please help!!

[android-developers] Job service execution in Android M

2016-03-31 Thread karthik . mail . dev
I have a jobservice which has to repetitively run when device is connected
to internet. It is running without any issues in Lollipop but the same job
service is not executed in Marshmallow consistently. I suspect it is
something to do with the battery percentage of device. Is Marshmallow doing
any optimization on job service scheduling in low charge scenario? pls help
me with this since it is inconsistent?

[android-developers] Traceview in Android 5

2015-12-11 Thread Karthik k
Hi,

Traceview is used to profile the Android apps. For Android version <= 4.4,
Traceview is implemented using the functions (like dvmMethodTraceAdd)
defined in /dalvik/vm/profile.c.

However, I am not able to find this profile.c or those function definitions
(like dvmMethodTraceAdd)
in Android Version 5 source code. Does anyone know how the implementation
changed for Android version 5?
I suspect this change is part of ART. Is that correct? Could someone please
help me to figure out
how the implementation of Traceview changed in Android 5?

Cheers,
Karthik.

[android-developers] Re: READ_LOGS permission is not granted to 3rd party applications in Jelly Bean (api 16)

2012-07-19 Thread Karthik
Hi Levgenii Nazaruk,

Thanks for the info that you provided with. But, I do have some douts.

We are currently working on an ERP based Device Administration App in
android, which need to monitor other application and decide which one to
run and which one not to, based on server side policy. The whole
architecture was based on system logs which collapsed due to new Log policy
in Jelly Bean. Please let me know how can I get this permission from code
itself.

To be precise, can I run *pm grant pkg android.permission.READ_LOGS *from
within the code like *Runtime.getRuntime().exec(pm grant pckg name
android.permission.READ_LOGS);* or something else. If not, what exactly
can be done to get this permission. Do we need to run this from *adb
shell*every time ?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
*Karthik*

I've tested the adb shell pm grant pkg android.permission.READ_LOGS

Here how persistent this granted permission is:
 1) Granted permission survives reboot.
 2) Granted permission survives application update (i.e. adb install -r).
 3) Granted permission does not survive if application was uninstalled and
 then installed again.

This is basically what I'd expect from this functionality. So basically
the developer/tester flow I was worried about is actually covered by Jelly
 Bean. Which is good news.

 Hi all,

I've been working on an application for developers that uses
DropBoxManager. The DropBoxManager requires READ_LOGS permission to be
granted in order to query information from it.

Today I've tested my application on newest (api 16) emulator before
releasing it to Google Play. It turned out that Android now refuses to
grant this permission to 3rd party applications. This is weird because I've
looked through all Jelly Bean's documented changes and couldn't find
 anything that mentions READ_LOGS permission.

 So basically my questions:

- Did anyone see this change documented?
- Can someone confirm this behavior on Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean
on it (the one released to attendees of Google I/O)?

And questions to someone from Android team:

- Why this breaking change wasn't described in documentations like

 READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGEhttp://developer.android.com/reference/android/Manifest.permission.html#READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGEwas?

- What should developers and testers do in order to use those handy
utility applications that require READ_LOGS to be useful? Is there any
 way
to allow READ_LOGS to 3rd party applications without making custom build
(i.e. something in Developer Options that I could've missed)?

Simple step. But unusual.

Find the package name of the contact app. And make the same package

When u r install ur new app. Mobile will match your package. if so ,

But the funny thing in this, u are going to lose your inbuilt contacts

 Um ... no.

You allocate stuff. The heap grows proportional to how much you allocate.
If you don't want it to grow that much, don't allocate that much. You can't
magically reduce your heap size without addressing what's using it up. Look
at the tools section to see what tools are available to you to track down
 your memory use.

[android-developers] Making an apk exclusively receive an SMS

2011-06-20 Thread Karthik
Hello-
Our app processes SMS'es meant for it. However, such SMS'es are also
picked up by other SMS-based apps. And in this case, such SMS-based
apps would display the SMS message meant for our app in clear text,
and we don't want that to be seen.
So, is there a way to exclusively send an SMS to an apk? Our app has
the highest priority for handling SMS'es, but obviously, there can be
other apps that do the same. Does Android implement a port concept
(as in J2ME), where an app can listen to SMS'es meant for it on it's
specific port?
Rgds.

[android-developers] Multiple Window support on Android?

2010-05-21 Thread Karthik Ravi Shankar
Hi,

I'm an application developer, trying to develop a graphics application. I
have been trying to get multiple windows each rendering their view up for
quite sometime with no headway. I have gone through the documentation but
have not come across any technique to enable multiple window support. Does
Android have multiple window support as of now? If so, can anybody give me a
pointer to some help.

Thanks in advance,
Karthik.

[android-developers] Multiple Surface Views

2010-05-20 Thread Karthik Ravi Shankar
Hi,

I am working on a graphics application in Android. I have a question
regarding MULTIPLE SURFACE VIEWS. Can I be rendering multiple surface views
at the same time. Initially, when I had two surface views in the same
activity, it didn't seem to work, as it used to show only one at any time.
But, with one surface view attached to one activity, is there any way I can
keep the background activity's Surface View alive so that both the surfaces
get rendered together? If anybody has any idea about this, can they share
it? Any pointers will also be helpful.

Thanks, Karthik.

[android-developers] Question regarding composition

2010-05-19 Thread Karthik Ravi Shankar
Hi,

I'm new to Android development. I'm trying to do composition in Android
using Surface Flinger. For this, I am trying to create SurfaceView classes -
that is - I am creating a surface, with SurfaceCreated() method, and drawing
onto a canvas in the onDraw() method. Now to put the canvas into the
surface, I'm using lockCanvas() call. I'm adding multiple such surfaceView
classes using addContentView(). But, this doesn't seem to do composition.
I'm not sure if this is the only method to do composition in Surface
Flinger. I have looked around in the documentation, but I'm still missing
the point. If someone has any idea about composition using Surface Flinger,
can they let me know.

Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Synchronous Display Calls

2010-05-12 Thread karthik r
Hi,

I'm new to android development. I'm developing an graphics application
and want to see the performance. I have a few questions in this regard
-

1) Is invalidate() called on a View after regular intervals by the
system itself? I mean does the display get updated on its own? Or are
we explicitly required to call invalidate()?
2) Is invalidate() an asynchronous call? If not, do we have any
synchronous display calls?

Please let me know in case anybody has any information regarding these
questions.

Thanks in advance!

As I understand these are default themes and it doesnt require any change in
my resource files. Am I right?

 My AndroidManifest.xml looked like this

 category android:name=android.intent.category.LAUNCHER

 /intent-filter
 /activity

 uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion=4 /

then I tried thru the code using
 setTheme(android.R.style.Theme_Dialog);

Above piece of code has built successfully but still I couldnt see any
floating app, the app was occupying full screen. The same experiment I did
with Theme.Translucent as well. Any light on this?

[android-developers] Instrumentation's sendKeyDowUpSync()

2009-04-07 Thread Karthik

Hi
I am not able to get this to work, due to the fact that I am unable to
use the INJECT_EVENTS permission. In my manifest, I have set use-
permissions for this permission and also set android:sharedUserId to
android.uid.shared. How do I get this to work? Seems like if this
feature (simulating key events) is being made available in
Instrumentation, there must be an easy way to use it...

[android-developers] Re: Why did I delete the project, but it still run ?

2008-10-05 Thread Karthik P
This is just that user data is still present, if you want to clear off
entire user data then use wipe command either from command line or while you
do Run Configuration-Target-Wipe User data (Check this). This will clear
off all user data.

Thanks,
