[android-developers] What is the best android development platform/programming language for a UI that works with sql, sends notifications, and can get access to things like photos and phone calls and

2017-02-16 Thread Nick R
Hi,

I'm working with a Windows OS. My question is as it is in the subject- What
is the best android development platform/programming language for a UI that
works with sql, sends notifications, and can get access to things like
photos and phone calls and location and video etc with the users permission?

I'm probably going to be using Amazon Cloud services so I need one that
will work with the cloud.

I would like something that would make this very quick and easy, preferably
with no code or as little code as possible. If I need to use code, please
let me know what language I will need to use.

Thanks so much guys!

[android-developers] AccessibilityService dispatchGesture() in API 24

2016-08-26 Thread Nick Yelito
Hey all,

I am looking to use the new dispatchGesture() method in
AccessibilityService in API 24. I've got it to call my dispatchGesture, but
the gesture is being cancelled and returning to the onCancelled callback
every time. I'm not sure where I am going wrong, and there is fairly
limited documentation since this API is so new.

Here is a gist of my code, I am trying to imitate a tap on the screen as a
gesture: https://gist.github.com/nyelito/ce80217da00408e554bc4b6146eab0ca

Are there any examples of anyone using this code or more detailed
documentation?

Thanks

Google announced in an email to some developers they're dropping orderId
for all test (license test) purchases.

Sounds like you and I had the same experience: I never received the email
in spite of being a developer on the Play Store for four years.

Here's a copy of the email: http://theeye.pe.kr/archives/2716 (discussion

[android-developers] Bluetooth scan for available devices

2016-06-14 Thread 'nick oliver' via Android Developers
I am trying to scan for available devices but the scan does not seem to
find any devices. The app works and displays using Toast when the discovery
starts and finishes but doesnt show a device, the turning on & off of BT
works as well as displaying the paired devices.. I know there are available
devices as the scan in settings show that they are there. I followed quite
a few tutorials (this is my 6th attempt) and each of them come out with
something similar which doesnt work. I have been to the play store and
downloaded 8 different bluetooth scanners and only 50% of them actually
worked.

I am using a Samsung S6 for testing and development. My goal is to find and
connect to certain devices for communication and control but i want to be
able to scan for them first.
Can anyone spot/see anything in the code which could cause it not to work
or something I have missed?

Ah yes you're totally right. I started it sticky and that's why it's coming
back to life. Is there a way to keep the service running after the app itself
is killed? If not I guess I'll have to store the list in persistent memory and
load it in when the service starts.

[android-developers] Difference between swiping in all apps menu and pressing back to exit

2015-12-30 Thread Nick Teo
Hi all,

I'm working on a messaging app that starts a service in the background that
will receive messages from a Pebble smartwatch and then send out an sms
message. Right at this moment, I'm trying to make it so that the service is
always running in the background so that the user can always send texts
even if the app isn't actually open. There is a private local variable in
the service that contains the contacts that the user can send texts to.
When I press the back button to exit the app after setting the contacts,
the list persists and when I open the app again, I see the contacts. If I
open up the all apps menu thing and swipe the app to exit it, the list is
destroyed, however, I know the service is still running (I get Toasts from
the service). I was under the impression that swiping the app closed and
pressing the back button are the same. Are they not? Is there a way to make
it so that the local variable is never destroyed as long as the service is
running?

[android-developers] Interept all the requests from the webview

2014-02-25 Thread Nick

I'm writing an android web application using built in webkit engine. I have
html files in the application local dir (wanted to put them in assets but
we have a requirement to update them over http so I need to replace assets
in runtime what is impossible). The application should work over SSL with
one requirement: it should check CN for each request. I've implemented it
the following way:

   1. I wrote MySSLSocketFactory that uses custom trust manager. In that
trust manager I delegate call to default one and check CN.
   2. Then I wrote java-javascript bridge and transfer all ajax calls to
   android service.
   3. When call is done the service sends broadcast intent and I parse its
data in the receiver(in main activity that contains a webview) and call a
global js function with request id.

It worksbut... I forgot about a lot of js features like closure,
anonimous functions etc. Is there any other way? Maybe it's possible to
force webkit to use MyHttpClient instead of default one?

Any ideas?

[android-developers] SurfaceTexture issues on Android 4.3/4.4 vs 4.1?

2013-12-31 Thread Nick
Hi,

An app I'm developing which uses SurfaceTexture worked fine on a Galaxy S3
using Android 4.1. However, on upgrading to Android 4.3 I now get a strange
barred or striped effect which looks like the camera feed in very low
resolution.

On a new Nexus 7 running 4.3 and then 4.4 I get the same effect which
suggests something has changed between 4.1 and 4.3. I don't seem to get any
opengl errors generated.
The most common error people seem to run into with SurfaceTextures is not
using the GL_TEXTURE_EXTERNAL_OES type; but I do use this.

Does this sound familiar? If anyone wants to look at the code it's at
https://github.com/nickw1/Freemap/tree/master/java/texturetest/src/freemap/texturetest;

I don't really want anyone to spend any time on this, I'm just mailing on
the offchance that it's a problem which sounds familiar to someone.

Thanks,
Nick

BTW just to clarify: forgot to say that the SurfaceTexture is streamed to a
GLSurfaceView and then I draw two triangles covering the screen using the
texture. Sorry for omitting this.

Re: [android-developers] How to disable the broadcasting of the SSID of the mobile hotspot (tethering)

Out of curiosity, why do you want this feature? The most common reason for
not broadcasting the ssid is for security reasons. But not broadcasting
the SSID actually makes the security situation worse, not better.

[android-developers] Can a modifier key fallback on an action?

2012-10-25 Thread Nick Badal
I'm working on an input device that has a button that I'd like to act both
as a home button when pressed by itself, but also work as a modifier for
the other buttons on the device.

I know you can do this in the kcm file with other buttons, and have
something like:

key ESCAPE {
 base: fallback BACK
 alt, meta: fallback HOME
 ctrl: fallback MENU
 }

Is it possible to have something like:

key CTRL_LEFT {
 base: fallback HOME
 {SOMETHING HERE}: CTRL_LEFT
 }

so that I can press that button with another button and have it not
fallback on HOME?

Thanks in advance! :D

[android-developers] Re: LVL Retry Count

2012-09-17 Thread Nick Maiorana
Please help! I have been looking all day for a way to set the grace period
and all. I have not found any examples of how to do this using the

Thanks

their policy file for more liberal activation and caching. I've done
this too but you have to do quite a bit of experimentation and no one
is sure what the server is sending the customers if anything different
 at all.

I think the Android team wanted to avoid discussing the LVL too much
as it would provide hints to pirates. But the pirates have taken the
easy way out by hooking into the app and going around LVL all
 together.

haven't had any complaints about false-negatives, or the like --
 however,
this *doesn't* mean that it doesn't happen, it just means that if it
 does,
then nobody has complained about it to me.

  As for you concerns:

What problems with the grace period are you referring to? The grace
 period
will actually help you out if the case of Retry responses from the
 server.

As for the licensing implementation with no network access, you
 shouldn't
worry too much about that either. Normally, you get about 10 retries
 before
the 503 error occurs. However, if the user has already checked the
 license
with a Server Managed Policy, then the license is cached on the phone
 for a
period of time. So, if the user starts the app up while their device is
 in
  Airplane mode (let's say 10 hours into a 12 hour cross-oceanic flight),
 then
the cached license could still give the user a valid response -- even
 with
no network access. This all depends on the VT extra from the initial
 license
response. I'm not sure what a typical value is, but I know it last at
 least
several hours, if not a day or more (if you wanted you could check out
 the
value yourself by setting a breakpoint in the default implementation).
 Now,
if the user *hasn't ever* received a valid license check, then it will
 fail
without network connection. At which point, in my app, I ask the user to
check for network connectivity and retry.

Something to note: I haven't verified this with anyone on the Android
 dev
team, but I'm pretty sure that once you release your application with
 LVL
enabled on your phone *and* you don't buy your own app (i.e. you have
 the
release version installed on your device, but haven't actually bought it
through the market), then the VT extra in the licensing response is not
 a
date that a typical user will receive. That is, I've found that without
actually purchasing the app, the licensing server gives me a validity
 time
which basically disables any valid cached response. Again, I've only
 seen
this once I actually release the app, and *have NOT *bought it myself.

app APNDroid did but is that the only way?

[android-developers] How to load/use data from an SQLite db

2012-06-12 Thread Nick
Hi devs,

This is my first android application, and am confused about how to
proceed with using data from an SQLite database.

The database itself will contain around 20,000 - 25,000 records,
across three or four tables. The information inside the database will
not need to be changed, only read from.

As this is my first android app, I'm confused on how to load this data
into the app itself.

Should I be loading the information from the database into memory on
app-startup, or querying the database every time the user searches for
a record?

Iv'e been looking into using greenDAO to manage the SQLite db for me,
and allow me to query. Am I on the right lines with this?

Any help would be appreciated.

[android-developers] Re: Can someone recommend several image recognition Android applications to me ?

2012-03-14 Thread Nick
What do you mean by image recognition? Do you need to look for
specific shapes on the image? Then google for OpenCV.
If you need to extract text from the image, you have several options:

1. Open source. As far as i know there are no native opensource Java
OCR SDKs. There are Java APIs which wrap calls for native interfaces,
for example, for one of the most popular opensource OCR engines -
Tesseract (http://groups.google.com/group/tesseract-ocr/) - there are
some Java wrappers like tesjeract (http://code.google.com/p/
tesjeract/) or Tess4J (http://tess4j.sf.net/). That could work for
you, but it's rather hard to set up and will require developing image-
preprocessing and font training on your side.

2. One more solution could be a cloud service. It requires end-user
application to have the internet connection, but it's independent from
your programming language choice and resources limitations. Have a
look at http://ocrsdk.com, it's a cloud-based OCR SDK that let you
upload an image through web API and returns you the OCRed data. This
Web API based OCR SDK has a free 90 days trial without any upfront
charges. Its pricing is really affordable in comparison with
enterprise solutions while it provides enterprise-level OCR accuracy
which is way better than open source. You may also find useful this
Android codesample at github:
https://github.com/abbyysdk/ocrsdk.com/tree/master/Android
(you need to get API key at http://ocrsdk.com to use it).

Hope it helps!

[android-developers] OpenGL Textures and Transparency. Square holding the texture still shows.

2012-01-26 Thread Nick Miller
Hello, I've run into a problem using OpenGL with Android.

I'm trying to create a transparent sprite that appears in my game
application.
The sprite is (.png) format and contains transparent values (alpha=0)
around the image.

Loading the image isn't a problem. I'm able to have the image load
onto a VBO square.

The problem is that this VBO square shows, it's color being the same
that is set with:
glClearColor(0, 0, 0, 1);

In the game scene I have a bunch of VBO cubes that surround the area
constantly moving towards the viewer.
Randomly, the sprite I was talking about will take the place of one of
these cubes. Then, when more cubes spawn from the far back. I can see
the square that the sprite is drawn on.

I honestly think this has to do with depth testing some how... because
when the sprite is in front of the cube. It would make sense for the
depth testing to hide parts of the cube (the parts covered by the
square).

The problem is that when I disable depth testing, the sprites will not
appear in front of the cube.

How can I make it so the sprites will appear in front, yet not cover
of the behind cubes?

Thanks, Nick.

Re: [android-developers] FragmentTransaction commitAllowingStateLoss problem

2012-01-23 Thread Nick Parker
Hi Mark,

I pieced together an example to post and eventually was able to reproduce the
behavior I was seeing. I had a nested layout and within my layout I was
including the initial list fragment. When I removed the fragment entry from
the layout markup and subsequently added it to the container in the onCreate of
the parent activity everything works smoothly now. Not sure if this is related
to the compatibility library or not, but the issue seems to be resolved by
loading the control dynamically. Thanks for your time.

Beats me, based on the descriptions in this thread. If you create a
sample project that demonstrates the issue, post it somewhere and I'll
take a peek at it. Or, if you try creating a sample project and can't
reproduce the problem, that'll help you narrow down where the
differences between the two projects are.

 Unfortunately, I don't have a ListFragment-with-context-menu sample in
my stable, otherwise I'd point you to it.

[android-developers] FragmentTransaction commitAllowingStateLoss problem

2012-01-20 Thread Nick Parker
I am using the Google compatibility library for Fragments. I have a
ListFragment that upon selection from a context menu performs a fragment
transaction replace to display another fragment. This operation works
fine, however following a screen rotation the the commit operation fails
giving the following exception:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Can not perform this action after
onSaveInstanceState

According to the documentation I should use commitAllowingStateLoss due to
the onSaveInstanceState being called. When I switch to the
commitAllowingStateLoss call I get the following error:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Activity has been destroyed

Note, in the ListFragment I am overriding the onAttach and storing a
reference to the Activity which is provided following the screen rotation.
From the activity I call getSupportFragmentManager in order to perform the
FragmentTransaction. How is the activity becoming null? Is this an issue
with the compatibility library, or any I doing something wrong? Thanks in
advance.

When I have run into this error, it is because I am calling something
on a fragment that no longer exists (e.g., destroyed in a
 configuration change).

This makes sense, I understand the issue with calling commit, I have not
problem switching to commitAllowingStateLoss().

According to the documentation I should use commitAllowingStateLoss due to
the onSaveInstanceState being called. When I switch to the
commitAllowingStateLoss call I get the following error:

Note, in the ListFragment I am overriding the onAttach and storing a
reference to the Activity which is provided following the screen rotation.

You should not need to do that, as you can call getActivity() from any
 Fragment.

I was initially just calling getActivity() from the ListFragment, however that
was returning null. When I captured the Activity in the onAttach method I ran
into the issue during the commitAllowingStateLoss().

From the activity I call getSupportFragmentManager in order to perform the
FragmentTransaction. How is the activity becoming null?

Based on your description here, it is not becoming null. You would
have a NullPointerException if it were null.

I was just following the stack trace and using JD-GUI to look at the code.
More of the stack trace looks like this:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Activity has been destroyed
at
android.support.v4.app.FragmentManagerImpl.enqueueAction(FragmentManager.java:1314)
at
android.support.v4.app.BackStackRecord.commitInternal(BackStackRecord.java:541)
at
android.support.v4.app.BackStackRecord.commitAllowingStateLoss(BackStackRecord.java:529)

JD-GUI shows inside the enqueueAction method an IllegalStateException is thrown
when the Activity is null. Do you have any suggestions to get around this.
I'd really just like to be able to perform replace operations on a
FragmentTransaction following screen rotations. Thanks again.

2012-01-20 Thread Nick Parker
Hi Mark,

I am not exactly sure what you are suggesting. I do call
registerForContextMenu inside the onActivityCreated() method and super, but
nothing else. Are you suggesting I do something there? The invocation of the

onContextItemSelected. The view has already redrawn itself well before I
attempt to trigger the context menu following the screen rotation, but the
commitAllowingStateLoss() still fails. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Then you were doing the work in too early of a lifecycle method, most
likely. Try sliding to a slightly later one (e.g.,
 onActivityCreated()).

I am using setRetainInstance(true) with all of the Fragments. I am actually

rotations triggered from the onListItemClick without issue. Following screen
rotation, I logged the getActivity() call in onCreateContextMenu which is still
valid, but the onContextItemSelected shows getActivity() returning null. Any
thoughts as to why that might be? Thanks.

I am suggesting that wherever you were calling getActivity(), and it
was returning null, was too early in the fragment lifecycle. Solving
that would eliminate your need to hold onto the Activity separately
yourself, and it might clear up other problems that you are
 encountering.

   The invocation of
the to perform the FragmentTransaction replace occurs from the
  onContextItemSelected.

Where are you getting the Fragment from that you are passing to
replace()? If it not one that you instantiated just now, it may be
that you are trying use a fragment that has been destroyed due to the
 configuration change.

BTW, are you using setRetainInstance(true) with your fragments? If
not, bear in mind that the fragments are destroyed and recreated
during the configuration change, when the activity is destroyed and
 recreated.

On which fragment is getActivity() returning null? The ListFragment(?)
on which you have the context menu, or the newly instantiated one? If
it's the newly-instantiated one, that's not especially surprising, as
it will not go through any of its lifecycle methods until the

in Sniff mode, as a result the power drained is very high. This is
only when a PC dongle is bonded to the phone. If a A2DP headset is
bonded, it enters in sniff mode properly.

I also saw that the sniff idle timeout interval in case of dongle is
seen to be 0. Because of which hci_conn_enter_active_mode() is not
seting the idle timer, as a result hci_conn_enter_sniff_mode() is
never executed, and the device never goes in sniff.

The idle timeout is initialized here -
In kernel/net/bluetooth/hci_core.c, i see
hdev-idle_timeout = 0;

But this is not the correct place to modify the timeout, as it affects
all devices ...dongles, headsets..etc.

Does any body know how to set the sniff idle timeout correctly..?

Thanks

[android-developers] Fragment visibility after transaction

2011-10-13 Thread Nick Parker
Hello,

I am using the fragment compatibility library and have a question
about fragment transactions. I am using a third-party action bar and
two fragments in this scenario. Each fragment updates the user
interface of the outside action bar when they are displayed. When
displaying the first fragment, I add a button to the action bar which
when clicked performs a fragment transaction replace operation to
display the second fragment. The second fragment updates the display
of the action bar accordingly.

The problem I am seeing is when the user presses back, or I need to
manually remove the second fragment via a popBackStack operation, I
need to be able to update the view of the newly visible initial
fragment. At first I thought that OnBackStackChangedListener would be
the solution, however when that gets triggered during the replace
going from one fragment to another it causes the initial first
fragment to update the state of the action bar when the second
fragment is actually visible. I tried to check for visibility within
onBackStackChanged of the first fragment, but the fragment always
comes back as being visible even when it shouldn't in the scenario of
loading the new fragment. Does anyone have any suggestions for this
type of situation? Any thoughts to what I might be missing? Thanks!

esa manera tenés más flexibilidad para configurarlo.

Each time you concatenate two strings a third one is created to hold the
result. Strings are inmutables and expensive. Try with the
StringBuffer/StringBuilder and check the results. Your code will be faster
and more legible.

Yes, because the instance is still loaded and the service holds a reference

out the memory space instance A is occupying?

You can call System.gc(), but that is just a hint, th GC may not run.

  3) Is this a problem with the third party service? In my code i
perform bind in onCreate and unbind in onDestroy... I am stumped as to
why my destroyed instance A is still being referenced when the service
was bound to and started by B.

It looks like that, check with the service provider.

That is much too vague an answer. A less vague and more helpful answer
would be, start with what is best practices for good coding skills

 Android's classes.

Now to get that start, there is no better place to start than Joshua
Block's Effective Java, described on Amazon at

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_12?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooksfield-keywords=joshua+bloch+effective+javax=0y=0sprefix=joshua+bloch
.

The book from Robert Martin, clean code, it's also a very good reading.

The price on the Kindle edition is quite reasonable, though you might
want to try local libraries first: Alameda County Library has it
available for on-line reading, for example. Your local libraries might
 have it too.

Next, one has to consider the issues of best practices for good
coding skills and classes that are unique to Android. This is not as
straightforward, since there is not enough clear precedent, there is
still quite a bit of controversy. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend
Google's own code practices without reservation. They too cut corners
at times, writing code that does not conform to best practices. Yet at
the same time, we are often quite dependent on them for initial sample
code. So sometimes we can recognize their practices as good and follow
 them, sometimes we cannot.

+1 to that. A lot of common sense it's a good practice too.

There is also the O'Reilly Press Android Cookbook, but that is still
 a work in progress.

[android-developers] Re: Clickable (when select it shows Orange) items within a ListView

2011-08-16 Thread Nick Longinow
Here is my layout - its just a ListView where each ListView item is a
combination of 2 linear layouts. I am trying to make the second
linear layout clickable, so that when you press it you see orange.
Almost like having a horizontal scrollable ListView within each main
(vertical) ListView.

LinearLayout
xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
android:layout_weight=.8
android:orientation=horizontal
android:layout_height=wrap_content
android:id=@+id/firstHorizontal
android:layout_alignParentLeft=true
android:layout_width=fill_parent

TextView
android:text=Request Title Here - and it is a very long
title that should wrap
android:layout_gravity=top
android:textSize=26sp
android:textColor=#ff00
android:id=@+id/request_title
android:layout_height=wrap_content
android:lines=1 android:singleLine=true
android:layout_width=wrap_content
/TextView
/LinearLayout

!-- its this second LinearLayout that I want to be
able to touch and have it show Orange, so the user knows it was
selected --

LinearLayout xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/
android
android:id=@+id/secondHorizontal
android:layout_weight=.2
android:orientation=horizontal
android:layout_alignParentRight=true
android:paddingLeft=4sp
android:focusable=true
android:clickable=true
android:layout_height=fill_parent

android:gravity=center_vertical|right

android:layout_width=55sp
ImageView
android:id=@+id/info
android:focusable=false
android:hapticFeedbackEnabled=true
android:soundEffectsEnabled=true
android:layout_width=35sp
android:layout_height=40sp
android:src=@drawable/manage
android:paddingTop=1sp
android:scaleType=center
android:enabled=false
android:layout_weight=2
android:paddingLeft=5sp
android:paddingRight=1sp
android:layout_centerVertical=true /
/LinearLayout

Hoping this is an easy one.  Still experimenting with it myself.
