Just to be clear, this isn't something the systemd developers came up with. ConsoleKit was responsible applying the same ACLs for local sessions before. Re: [arch-general] immediate sleep after resume
Forgot to mention in original post - it seems well understood that the window managers may or may not play nicely with systemd - as to who will do power management. If a user is not logged in - it is still nice to have systemd sleep system on lid close for example - and for this reason the window managers are given the ability to "inhibit" systemd when they are claiming to do the power management. And when they are not, then systemd does not get the "inhibit". [1] Several window managers, KDE among them are supposed to "play nice" with systemd in this regard. So, one suggestion some have is not to use KDE at all for this - and rely solely on systemd - it is of course less configurable. I have not yet tried this approach. This can be done via the same login.conf. It's not a huge deal, as I just press power button to wake it up again, but curious what others have found. gene [1] I'd rather have a positive than a triple negative LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no might be easier to read as LidSwitchInhibitIsActive=yes
[arch-general] immediate sleep after resume
This started happening sometime after I switched to systemd (tho I am not finger pointing). Upon resume - the laptop immediately sleeps - the second resume is fine. Not every time either. Fresh boot - sleep - resume cycle seems to work fine. Googling suggested putting this in /etc/systemd/login.conf LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no However this makes no sense to me - as surely systemd knows the difference between the open and close lid events. The argument made was that there was competition between kde and systemd to sleep/resume and this would keep systemd from doing anything. Anyway - above makes no difference :-) Anyone have any ideas? testing repo fully updated - using kde and systemd. gene/

[arch-general] autofs issue after location change
I had used one of my autofs mounts last night on my laptop. This morning I put it to sleep and moved to a different location where that nfs server is not available. I am fully updated to testing repo (as of last night anyway :-) ). (ii) Alerted by the hang - I tried to restart autofs via systemctl restart autofs Perhaps I didn't wait long enough - but this did not complete. (iii) So I rebooted pc. The shutdown hung after systemd reported [ok] for shutting off remote file systems. Again I only waited a few minutes - perhaps it would have timed out after sufficiently long - but how long? (iii) was especially surpising to me - I thought systemd would kill the daemon sooner. Can anyone share What is the right way of dealing with this 'dead autofs mount' issue? Thanks gene/

[arch-general] sleep + lid events + kde => new problem
Using fully updated testing repo - starting 'recently' - I notice that lid close no longer sleeps my laptop. Kde power is configured to sleep on lid close. If i click the menu and choose sleep manually - it sleeps fine - and subsequently wakes fine on lid-open. I can confirm with this little shell loop (left running and then close lid and reopen) that acpi shows lid is indeed closed: while [[ 1 == 1 ]] > do > cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state > sleep 1 > done state: open state: open state: open state: open state: closed state: closed state: closed state: closed state: open state: open So, it -seems- as if lid-event is not being passed along for some reason to the (kde) power management - or not being listened to. I have not yet switched to systemd - and I'm not sure which process is responsible for such events. It still happens with 3.5.4 kernel if that makes any difference. It is a W520 lenovo laptop. It's the signing of the key by a Certificate Authority that is the second step - it is expensive to create a CA (as discussed in mjg's blog) - Microsoft offers a UEFI CA service to sign your key. Fedora plans to have their Fedora key signed by the UEFI CA - so no further change to the firmware is needed. They also are putting some tools together to help users to self sign their own key - which is used it to sign the boot loader (etc) and also to store the CA key in the firmware so the signed bootloader will be approved by Secure Boot using your own private CA. In order for there to be an Arch provided key - it would need either to be signed by the UEFI CA or self signed with the CA key stored in firmware ... or something like that. I don't yet know how MS UEFI CA key updates get installed into the firmware? I suppose it will be done much like a bios update. gene/

Perhaps, then, it might just mean the inconvenience of toggling it off/on via firmware each time if you ever needed to dual boot MS - windows 8 will def not boot with it off. linux 3.3 from testing - fully updated from test repo. I had plugged my cell phone in to usb - a few times in and out. After unplugging, I closed laptop lid - the sleep light which normally flashes then goes steady to indicate laptop is sleeping did not. I opened lid - and found khubd process at 100% cpu. In earlier kernels there were some problems with usb if I attempted to sleep a laptop with a USB device plugged in - but i thought there were some fixes to this problem. If I understand correctly there is a tool to configure touchpads is now available in kde 4.8.0 http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php?content=114270 However I cannot find it on my desktop - I have the kde meta group installed. Anyone know where synaptiks is - is it available? Thanks! gene/

[arch-general] thinkpad_acpi out of date?
Hi: (1) Fully updated with test repos. Thinkpad W520. I have kernel 3.2.5-1. I see this in logs: lap3 kernel: [282571.053156] thinkpad_acpi: unknown possible thermal alarm or keyboard event received lap3 kernel: [282571.053160] thinkpad_acpi: unhandled HKEY event 0x6040 lap3 kernel: [282571.053161] thinkpad_acpi: please report the conditions when this event happened to ibm-acpi-de...@lists.sourceforge.net (2) lsmod shows thinkpad_acpi is running. I found in /lib/modules was kernel/drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.ko.gz and possibly kernel/drivers/acpi/acpi_pad.ko.gz The first one seems to be version 0.24 but I cannot tell if its the 0.24-20110604 version or earlier - at least by poking at the .ko. (3) http://sourceforge.net/projects/ibm-acpi/files/thinkpad-acpi/0.24-20110604/ Suggests this is/may be fixed in this version - could our version of thinkpad_acpi be out of date? Thanks gene

cpupower followup: I installed cpupower but a short test for me didn't work .. 1) ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreqy Is empty .. 2) cpupower -c 0 frequency-set -g ondemand Setting cpu: 0 Error setting new values. Common errors: - Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?) - Is the governor you requested available and modprobed? - Trying to set an invalid policy? - Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available, for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency or because the userspace governor isn't loaded? I need to read more ... to get the right driver installed first I guess.

I'll get more involved as I find my way round and learn the ways ... pre-apologies if I'm not familiar with all the protocols yet .. That said - (1) kde 4.8 - stable and working as its intended best I can tell - tested on 2 desktops and 1 laptop since last night. (2) One smallish potential problem zone on laptop is the new power applet - profiles are gone and it is no longer possible to choose a 'powersave' vs 'performance' via a toggle. If the bug[1] continues where the power applet thinks it is in battery mode after unplugging A/C, but in fact it is not (screen remains bright etc) [2] then the old way of 'fixing' it of hand toggling to performance profile and back to powersave is no longer available (at least via the power applet). So now need a CLI script to avoid battery drain in that case. Seems a step back. There is a toggle to 'turn off power management - useful for presentations on battery I suppose ... tho when I tried it earlier on battery it did not seem to restore performance mode for me ... I need to investigate that further tho'. gene [1] lenovo W520 I7 gen-2 with i915. [2] I had with all prev kde and up to 3.2.1 kernel.
