[Arches] Our World Heritage competition
Dear all, The new "Our World Heritage" initiative has issued a Call for Letters of Intention for better ways in which technology can be used to monitor World Heritage Sites and to tell multiple narratives surrounding a WH site: https://www.ourworldheritage.org/it_loi Arches-based initiatives may fit the core aims of this competition especially well: to strengthen the monitoring of World Heritage using Information Technologies (obviously), and to enhance multiple narratives in the interpretation and presentation of World Heritage Sites, which Arches can support by describing relationships among resources, people, organizations, events, etc. Entries should be built around a specific World Heritage Site, and should contain meaningful community involvement, in addition to their demonstration potential. The deadline is January 29, and there will be prizes and the opportunity for projects to be presented at the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee Meeting in 2022. For disclosure, I am involved with this initiative. Cheers, Yiannis Avramides Senior Program Manager, World Monuments Watch O +1 (646) 424-9594, ext. 224 350 Fifth Avenue, Suite 2412 New York, NY 10118 www.wmf.org<http://www.wmf.org/> www.facebook.com/worldmonuments<http://www.facebook.com/worldmonuments> -- -- To post, send email to archesproject@googlegroups.com. [Arches] Two-page fact sheet - new translations and a request for volunteers!
Four new translations of the Arches fact sheet are now available at http://archesproject.org/factsheet: - Chinese Mandarin (Simplified) <http://archesproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/arches_factsheet_CN_Mandarin_SC_2015.pdf> - Chinese Mandarin (Traditional) <http://archesproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/arches_factsheet_CN_Mandarin_TC_2015.pdf> - Italian <http://archesproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Arches_factsheet_Italian_2015.pdf> - Spanish <http://archesproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Arches_factsheet_Spanish_2015.pdf> They will be very useful for the community to spread the word to any interested parties in these languages. Thanks to all the contributors to these translations: Jin Shang (Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning and Design Institute), Edward Zhou (University of Hong Kong Museum and Art Gallery, through the HKU Preservation Working Group), Alberto Sanchez-Sanchez (Columbia University GSAPP), and Alessandra Peruzzetto (WMF). Meanwhile, we are looking for volunteers who would be interested in translating the fact sheet into more languages. Please respond to this thread if you would like to help! In particular, it would be great to update the existing (2012) translations in *Arabic*, *French*, and *German *-- those are very outdated by now! Other suggestions are more than welcome, and a Japanese translation is already forthcoming. Thanks! [Arches] Videos from Arches v3.0 press event
When v3.0 first became available in the spring, a press event was also organized in New York in order to get the word out. The speakers were Bonnie Burnham (WMF), Tim Whalen (GCI), Janet Hansen (City of Los Angeles), Scott Branting (American Schools of Oriental Research), and Dennis Wuthrich (Farallon Geographics, and familiar to everyone on the forum!). The invitees were mostly members of the press, but we captured great video of the speeches and it's now available on the Arches website. We have broken the event down into four separate videos, and you can watch all of them on this page: http://archesproject.org/press-event-video-v3-0 Enjoy and please spread the word! [Arches] A reminder about two upcoming information sessions
Dear all, I thought I would send a quick reminder to the forum about the two upcoming information sessions about Arches in November. The first will take place on Thursday, November 6 at the International Conference on Cultural Heritage (EuroMed 2014) in Limassol, Cyprus and the second will be on Sunday, November 9, during the 18th ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Florence, Italy. Both events will last for 2.5 hours and they will concentrate on version 3.0 of Arches (coming soon). You can find more on the agenda and some practical details here http://archesproject.org/time-change-arches-information-session-at-euromed-2014-on-november-6th (for Euromed) and here http://archesproject.org/save-the-date-arches-information-session-at-2014-icomos-general-assembly (for the ICOMOS General Assembly). Please note that there has been a time change for the information session at Euromed -- it will begin at 4 pm instead of 2:30, as previously announced (conference agenda here: http://www.cut.ac.cy/euromed2014proceedings/pdf/agenda.pdf) If any colleagues of yours are attending either of these two conferences, please feel free to encourage them to come by, and of course we hope to see some of you there too if you haven't told us yet -- please let us know! Re: [Arches] Arches documentation has a new home!
Thanks for being the voice of conscience Karl! The User Guide documents were in a shared Dropbox folder, which I have shared with Alexei for running through Pandoc. Like Alexei has done with the Installation Guide, these will soon be in the public repository (BTW, I'm happy to help), which I think is the best solution, no? I could probably do the same for the users guide if I had access to the markdown files. If you want to send those to me Yiannis, I'll convert those as well. Can I make a plea for The Markdown files should be publicly online in the first place rather than Yiannis emails them privately to Alexei? Re: [Arches] Arches documentation has a new home!
We only have the Installation Guide up on ReadTheDocs, thanks to Alexei. One of these days I'll learn reStructuredText and I'll transfer the User Guide there too (or I'll learn to code and I'll create a Markdown to reStructuredText converter, but that might take a little longer). If anyone else would like to take that on, please reply to this thread! RE: [Arches] Documentation at LeanPub now requires login? Er...
I'd say let's also plan on switching to Dropbox pro as we do that so we can get some file recovery and version tracking features. One thing that already makes me uncomfortable about Leanpub is that it would be too easy for any one of us to accidentally delete a file in one of the synced folders, only to lose it forever so far as I can tell. Karl, to answer one of your previous questions about why Leanpub, one thing that it gives us is an easy way to create a polished product using Markdown, in PDF and also in formats for Kindle and iPad. When it comes all the way down to the end user I see some value in that, but I am not convinced that these are very handy formats for an admin who is trying to troubleshoot an installation, for example. I have probably suggested this before, but since we are already on Atlassian maybe it would be a good idea to switch to Confluence for documentation? For those who care about being able to hold a book (or even a digital book) I understand that this solution would not be ideal. I know that there are drawbacks to using wiki formats too, so it's altogether possible that I am missing something important here. Just a thought. No doubt there are others here who have done this before and have opinions on what works or not. Er... Was there some reason we weren't doing that before? :-) Mostly lack of demand. Everyone who has expressed any interest in contributing to the documentation effort is granted access to the markdown. All files are hosted on dropbox, and it would be a trivial effort to make the folder public. To me its really just a matter of deciding to manage a (hopefully) larger number of contributors to the documentation. There's nothing stopping us from making the Markdown files publicly available, thereby allowing anyone to access and edit. The arches project website might be a good place to allow people access to the files. Of course, there will need to be some kind of vetting of edits that are contributed. Yup -- just the same as with program source code changes. In any case, we can choose to use these publicly edited documentation files as the input to Leanpub to generate new documentation. All in all, I don't think the problem is a technical one; rather its simply deciding to allow open access to the documentation files and begin managing the community-driven editing process.
