[ARIE-L] AE e-mail in place of Ariel Odyssey?
Hello! I've upgraded computers and with it comes the edict from OIT that I can't have server software on a desktop computer. So...as Ariel is slowly dying, and Odyssey is server based, I was wondering how Ariel and Odyssey libraries felt about being asked to supply articles via AE. I hate to scrap all these possible lenders when they can scan simply use either Ariel or Odyssey to scan the documents and deliver them to me as e-mail or as a file on a server by treating me as a patron instead of a borrowing library (I used to do this for non-Ariel non-Odyssey libraries). Should I delete Ariel or Odyssey from my custom holdings groups? BTW, I can and WILL still lend to all Ariel and Oyssey members. I will simply use AE. RE: [ARIE-L] ARIEL woes
Just going back and clearing out my inbox. I've been using Google Drive as an Ariel replacement. I have folders named for the month. I upload the article to the appropriate month and then choose share and enter the ILL e-mail address. I can type in a short message and the recipient receives a link that allows them to download the item. There is no password. Anyone with the link can download the file, so the borrowing library can simply forward it to their patron. When I want to delete all the uploaded documents. I simply wait till the 15th of the following month and then go in and delete everything. I'm sure there are some possible bugs, but so far I haven't run into any. [ARIE-L] Updating Spreadsheet on Share-ILL
http://www.shareill.org/index.php?title=Custom_Holdings Is is worth it to update the ILL Spreadsheet 2010? Now that so many libraries are dropping Ariel and so many adding Odyssey and with the introduction of Article Exchange, is it really necessary? Frankly, I still have Ariel plugging along and working great, but others are dropping it like flies. I, too, may have to drop Ariel. My computer is being replaced next year and OIT wants to put Ariel Odyssey on a server -- I don't even want to think about it. I have never liked Odyssey and with all the new complaints, I can see OIT is just going to love trying to put it on a server as well. Anyway, it's a lot of work to update the spreadsheet, so should we do it or is it time to let it die away and simply use the Policies Directory to search for custom holdings groups? Re: [ARIE-L] Ariel 4.1 -- Ariel Email Address--why use that option?
Dear Jody, The Ariel e-mail address is for Ariel libraries whose IT departments won't open ports and don't want to put a machine outside of the institutional firewall. They can't use the FTP option. It allows Ariel to access a special e-mail account and download Ariel files into the received queue. When Ariel finds an e-mail message that isn't an Ariel document, it puts the message (as a text file) in the Unknown folder. The outgoing portion of e-mail for Ariel (at least in my case because I use FTP mainly) is a regular e-mail account. I set it up this way, so I wouldn't lose patron e-mail replies in the Unknown folder. I think originally before patron delivery, it was the same as the incoming e-mail server with a specially designated Return e-mail address. But I am not sure, so take it with a grain of salt. I do both FTP and e-mail because I figure it helps widen the number of libraries I can supply articles to (I like being a net lender) and the number of libraries who can supply me with articles. It's been a while since I used 3.4, but this is my best recollection of the email checking issue. 3.4 is a bit kludgy if you want to send but not receive Ariel email. The issue is, if you turn on email, and don't have a dedicated Ariel email account, every time you check for new mail Ariel takes all the non-Ariel email received into your account and puts it in a junk folder within the Ariel folder while also removing it from the server. (It doesn't support IMAP, only POP3.) Because 3.4 doesn't support turning on send only (4.1.1 does) the trick here is to enter everything except your password for receiving. Set the interval at which Ariel should check for email to the longest possible (I don't believe it will let you leave that space blank). I think it was 999 minutes, but I could be mistaken. Then, roughly once a day it will prompt you to enter the password so it can check for email. Just cancel the prompt box, and it will not check for mail. It's not an elegant solution, but it works. [ARIE-L] Custom Holdings Spreadsheet 2010 -- changes to status -- add AV formats?
Hello! I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that a lot of people have updated their information on the spreadsheet. 2100+ visits have been made to the spreadsheet. The bad news is that I think someone accidentally vandalized the spreadsheet while trying to improve it. Problems found: 1. The second sheet -- Meanings of Headings -- was moved to the first sheet in the workbook. The reordering of the spreadsheets within the workbook is pretty minor for most people, but it really threw Odessa for a loop as she doesn't work much with spreadsheets and didn't know how to find the correct page. 2. All of the non-US libraries were deleted. (Odessa was working with the international Ariel custom holdings groups and found they'd all disappeared.) 3. All of the initials and e-mail addresses of people who had made changes were deleted. This is important data (I think) for verifying the information and tracking changes. 4. Additional columns for AV formats were added, but no explanation was given. I've reverted the spreadsheet to Chelsea's last edit on Thursday, 11 November 2010, and locked the spreadsheet to unauthorized editing. I am really sorry to have to do this. At the moment anyone with the URL can see the spreadsheet, but they cannot edit it. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AqUwtLajlUiVdGpyenVwdFB1UHR2N1p6X3dEZUc0eGchl=enauthkey=CLSorOAD I don't mind sharing, and I certainly don't mind people adding additional information/columns, but I do mind wholesale deletions of groups of libraries and columns of information. I suspect that whoever did this probably thought they were making changes only to their own spreadsheet -- at least that is my hope. If you have changes to make, please e-mail me at ill_...@mail.wvu.edu and I will give your information to Chelsea to make the changes. If the listserv community wants me to add AV formats to the spreadsheet, I can certainly do that as well. Let me know what you think about the additions. I would very much like to re-open the spreadsheet to public editing once again. Let me know what you think about it. BTW, Odessa is currently using the spreadsheet to update the custom holdings groups on ShareILL. She is currently checking and cleaning up the Ariel Custom Holdings page -- especially the international libraries. The Ariel group and Ariel by State groups have been updated to match the spreadsheet. Once she checks out all the international libraries and adds back in any deleted libraries, I will send a message to the listserv. After Odessa finishes updating the various Ariel custom holdings groups (ArieLVIS, ArielFree), she will create some Odyssey custom holdings groups. As she finishes each one, I will send a message to the listservs. Best wishes, Linda Linda Celet Bane Interlibrary Loan (PWS/PWSA) Mary F. [ARIE-L] Custom Holdings Spreadsheet -- Modifications Additions
ILL Spreadsheet 2010 https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AqUwtLajlUiVdGpyenVwdFB1UHR2N1p6X3dEZUc0eGchl=enauthkey=CLSorOAD Hello! I want to thank everyone for their questions, comments, and help with the spreadsheet. I opened it up to everyone in the hope that it would be easier to update and maintain by getting other ILL people involved. Anyone with the URL can view and edit the spreadsheet. This seems to be working well as hundreds of people per day have viewed it and some have edited it. I knew this would probably happen, and it's a good thing, -- several people have asked for changes and additions. I went ahead and added the following columns: E-Mail Delivery Fax Delivery AV Lender (Although Lloyd's List of 1,000+ free AV lenders, expanded, maintained, and revised by Paul B. Drake, is probably a much better resource: http://www.shareill.org/index.php?title=Lloyd%27s_List) The spreadsheet was started and designed to meet my library's custom holdings needs, but now it belongs everyone, so I think it should change to meet other libraries' needs as well. I also added an explanation of the headings on the second spreadsheet in the workbook. Someone sorted the spreadsheet by state, and I found a long list of just symbols at the bottom. They had no geographic designation and the rest of the columns weren't properly filled out. I don't know if they were hidden data that popped out when the spreadsheet was uploaded to Google Docs. I didn't see them before I uploaded the document, but they are definitely there, so...I will have my work-study students start checking them out and filling in the blanks. Sorry for that. Once they complete adding in the information for the geographically blank libraries, they will begin going back down the list and filling in the E-Mail, FAX, and AV columns. If you've added your initials or e-mail, we will contact you (e-mail) or the library before changing any of the data. Otherwise, we will go by what we find in the ILL Policies Directory. If the visits to the sheet and e-mails about problems have slowed down/stopped, I will post the URL to ShareILL toward the end of next week. [ARIE-L] Ariel test needed -- 157.182.165.30 OCLC symbol PWS
Hello from snowy WV! I haven't seen a single patron all day, so I am catching up. It's kind of nice and VERY quiet. My Odyssey port is blocked, so I can send but not receive. My Ariel reception has been iffy as well. One lender I approached about the problem didn't know why the articles had been mailed instead of Arieled. So...IT has asked me to get someone to test Ariel as well before they fix the blocked Odyssey port. They want to fix everything at once. I am running Ariel 4.1.1.99 Could someone running Ariel 3.X and/or 4.X send me test messages, so I can tell them if there are additional ports to unblock. I don't have that scanner, but I've found this works with mine. Make a note of your current settings so you can restore them if this doesn't work. Go to Settings Preferences. Click on Scan. Click on Scanner-specific dialog. Click on Okay. When you scan now, your scanner's regular scan menu should open and allow you to use the various features/tools to improve picture quality. Good Luck!
