[arr] My honest review of The Rising

2005-07-18 Thread Ashok Purohit

HI all,Rahmans magic has been working on me since Roja. Working late at office, I hardly get time these days to buy CDs of Rahman, so this time, I thought of listening to Rising at raaga.comI just heard Mangal Pandey on raaga.com. I am surprisedI mused...hey, is it Rahman...? Except for Mangal Mangal and Maula, I couldnt find any song that could mesmerize like his other songs.May be, more of north indian instruments are being used, considering the background of this film. But what I think is this album looks like being made in haste...maybe rahman needed more time to give finishing touches to other songs..Maula Maula...is wonderful, and I really appreciate it.Again, its just that this is only my honest opinion, not criticism. Its just that I found the album this way, without generalizing, cos I know that Rahman has already proved his talent long back, and no doubt that we have too much expectations from his
every album. For die hard arr fans (that includes me, give it a couple of listening online, and then go for the CD..). I will certainly buy it, but not for all songs. And one more thing, its not that I am here to critisize or judge any person...I am too small for that...I am only talking in neutral sensetaking the things as they are and not the fantasy of my mind.We have not seen the movie, and may be the song will perfectly blend with the film, but only the songs doesnt stand alone, like his earlier work.Your comments are expectedplz reply.vande mataramAshok

[arr] The Rising's not good.....Its Excellent....

2005-07-18 Thread Natesh R @ Infosys

hi all,
I bought my rising copy yesterday and had my first hearing on it today morning.I am now hearing it thefifth time and writing this mail

At first i want to quote some points before hearing this album:
i..If u are in need of a commercial stuff then don't go in to hear it...U will definitely get dissapointed(as quoted by adnan).People who are interested in classic and research stuff can proceed.
ii.Preparae ur mind set to the film's backdrop..thats the mid 19th century..to be specific 1857 as the film says 1857-The Rising...
iii.Mind these are the songs for director's interests and songs that suit the situations in the film.
iv.I would recommend u all to hear this album in a good head phone rather than bose or creative 5:1 or 7:1...I would also recommend u to imagine ur own visuals of 19th century so that u will enjoy it more that what it is.
v.Now lets move on to my humble review abt this classic album...

This is one album u will enjoy greatly with ur imagined visuals before the film releases and u will feel more joyous after the release of the film

.IT'S GOING TO BE A SURE HIT

Also i have a point to make to adnan..

Don't post bad reviews abt the album within 1 or 2 days of release. It makes others too disappointed. But i am the one who believes "ARR NEVER DISSAPOINTS".
If u don't like, its ur opinion.Opinions may differ. If u don't like it mention the point that this is not good, this is badif its a valid point...o.k...accepted.
simply saying i am dissapointed proves nothing...it only proves ur unfaith in RAHMAN and why not u leave the group...

MY REVIEW
Mangal Mangal-Track 1-kailash kher...(10/10)

It definitely took me to the 1857 period...The kailash kher's starting is superb in that background silence or a silent chord. When the beat started i felt i am travelling in an elephant.I felt lot of joy when hearing this song. It's surely haunting.I was stuck to it from my second listening.

Main vari vari-Track 2-Kavitha krishnamurthy,Reen Bharadwaj...(8/10)

It definitely will not stick to u in the first listening. But now i love this song.Mind it really sounds tough to compose.I think Rahman ji too mentioned this one. There is nothing wrong with the voice of kavitha ji in this song. Its simply superb. Her voice is apt for this mujra.
The song which Rahman mentioned tough to compose in lagaan was O rey chori where he blendend the english composition with the hindi one...

Holi Re-Track 3-Aamir khan,udit narayan,Madhushree,srinivas,chinmaye...(8.5/10)

I loved this song from the second listening.Yes..He has used his old beats from daud and kadhalar dinam. But see how the beats blend with the song. The classical sense of this song is great. There is nothing to say that it is not upto A R Rahman standards here.

One Question : What do u guys think as an A R Rahman standard? Is is simply commercial stuff and techno beats...its not that...He can do his best given any film by any director...Thats according to me his standard...Satisfies the need of the screenplay and director by his music to his best...

Rasiya-Track 4-richa sharma,bonnie chakraborty...(10/10)

This is the pick of the album.I liked, loved this song from the word go.Its a great composition. Many small, small music comes in the middle..u can get it when u hear it in a head phone.Again its classical sense is great.Richa sharma sounds great in this song. This is again a situational song...

Mangal mangal(Agni)-Track 5-kailash kher...(10/10)

This is the song i felt travelling in an elephant rather than the track 1.kailash kher's voice sounds ap to this period song. Its great...

Takey Takey-Track6-sukhwinder singh,kailash kher,kartick das baul and ARR's children

This is the second song which i liked somewhat from the first hearing and now couldn't resist myself humming this song.Great song.Again situational. Both sukhw and khailash's voice have blended with the background and it sounds great.Good use of the children's chorus.Again this guy khailash's voice has some magic. It really suits for a period film...I am saying it from my imagined visuals...opinions differ..

Al madath maula-Track 7-a r rahman,kailash kher,murtaza,kadir(7/10)

This is the onlysong iwas not in hold of after 3 listenings. But now slowly it is getting into me.It doesn't have the depth as Alla uh from Bose. Its surely divine.Something specific is the song ends in style.

Mangal Mangal(Aatma)-Track 8-Sukhwinder singh,kailask kher(9.5/10)

In this song sukhwinder singh joins hands with kailash kher..It starts slowlysimilar todesh mere(sad version) and picks up.In this song interestingly i didn't get a feel i am travelling in an elephent.

My pick of the album:

Rasiya...great composition...
mangal mangal

catchy:

takey takey

Expecting all ur guys feedback abt this review.and ur points to add abt these classic songs...

[arr] Aamir expects Lagaan repeat in mangal Pandey

2005-07-18 Thread naveenjn
New Delhi, July 18. (PTI): Actor Aamir Khan is back again with a
period flick, the adversaries remain the same but this time there's no
cricket involved. In Ketan Mehta's 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising', Aamir
and his band of revolutionaries would still be challenging the British
but not on the cricket pitch.

The film, set in Barrackpore against the backdrop of the first War of
Indian Independence in 1857, may find it difficult to replicate the
Oscar glory of 'Lagaan' but Aamir is keeping his fingers crossed.

I haven't thought about the Oscars yet. I just want to entertain
people. All I know is that when people see this film, they'll know the
man behind Mangal Pandey, the starting point of our freedom struggle,
says Aamir.

It was difficult because very little is known about Pandey. Even so,
all the events in the film are based on historical facts, he says.

I even wanted to visit Barrackpore but it didn't work out. However,
Ketan and production designer Nitin Desai did go there for research.

The two-and-half-hour long film, made simultaneously in Hindi and
English, will be premiering as the opening film at the Locarno film
festival in Switzerland on August 3 and will hit theatres worldwide on
August 12.

Produced by Bobby Bedi and Deepa Sahi, 'Mangal Pandey' boasts of an
ensemble cast - Aamir, Rani Mukherji, Amisha Patel, Toby Stephens and
Kirron Kher.

[arr] Re: India FM reviews The Rising......my view...

2005-07-18 Thread en_arvind
Hi Balaji

Absolutely correct !! U r bang on target with this reviewthis
Tuteja character is a 27 year old SW guy who writes reviews , in his
free time. His knowledge of music or it's nuances with very very
shallow and limited.

I hv read all his reviews on ARR as well as his non ARR albums and
have come to the conclusion that he is very negative towards ARR...
though he praised albums like SWADES he gave 3 stars, whereas he
gives 3 or more stars to guys like Himesh reshammiya or Anu Malik or
Nadeem Shravan !!

We need not be worried about his reviews .good music sells
irrespective of negative reviewsTHE RISING, though not a
blockbuster in terms of music, would definitely be a good hit.

only Taran Adarsh was capable of ludicrous analysis but looks like
his brethren at India FM are all capable of doing the same!! While
I
do not argue with the right of the reviewer to criticize the

would not have had a chance to get the album yet - now with the
weekend yes ! a lot more albums will be bought.
The other half who have already had a chance to listen to the
album, I'm sure have not savoured it enough and 2 days is too less
a
time to give a verdict on the semantics of the album.
But what disappoints me - and this is a trend im seeing over the
last few years is that the listeners keep harping and harping and
flooding mails with queries about the next release and when it
does
happen, a whole flood of emails with ridiculous topics start to
 bombard your inbox.
Sample this how would harris have done the rising? how would
a

produces shit tracks.while im not denying anyone the right to
criticise, all im saying is why wont you guys give it time ? An
artiste like Michael Cretu (Enigma) releases an album every 4
yearsto a layman most of his tracks might sound alike but if
you
give it time, you start realising the finer aspects and after
years
you still keep rediscovering something new - just like a r r's
songs..Im sure most of the group has not even been done with Bose -

there are just too many finer aspects in that album and 2 days is
all it takes to 'complete' the last rites of 1857 and look forward
 to AAh AAh...
The funniest part is when he does commercial tracks, people want
him to focus on something different and now when he does something
different, they want AAh AAh commercial tracks !! Give me a break
 folks !!
Lastly, if all of you as just listeners know so much about
music -
as claimed and can give a verdict on the songs, arrangments,
singers, lyrics etc, surely a r r with all his knowledge and
genius
and experience would know better. You think he would have worked
day
and night sitting at his console (siping Redbull !!!) to produce
what you call 'CRAP' ?? You need to ponder..

[arr] Dhandiyaa beats in Rising - need clarification

2005-07-18 Thread A.M.Aravind
Hi All,

I came across lots of mails saying that the Kadhalar Dhinam beats
have been reused in the Holi song.. If I am not wrong, it is the
traditional beat that is used for Dhaandhia dance... If the
situation demands, then the beat has to be used... creating a new beat
loop would be unsuitable and would not fit the song...

This is my opinion.. correct me if i am wrong!

Regards,
Aravind

[arr] Rahman not at his best - Rediff!!

2005-07-18 Thread Guruprasad S

http://in.rediff.com/movies/2005/jul/18rising.htm

The most consistent aspect of A R Rahman's music is its gradual appreciation.
There
is a smug assuredness to his composition, the maestro requiring
familiarity from his listeners. One needs to be used to his music.Ketan Mehta's highly awaited Mangal Pandey: The Rising
demands a level of concentration and discipline from its listener. Woven in the rustic fabric of Javed Akhtar's eloquent
metaphors, Kailash Kher's bouncy singing and Rahman's inspiring notes, Mangal mangal is thealbum's lead track
. It has three versions: Mangal, Aatma and Agni. These three pieces expound on the three states of a
revolutionary's mind, drawing a parallel between the rising sun and Mangal Pandey. The first articulates the simplicity, beauty and purity of daybreak,
when the revolutionary is born. Then comes the aggressive Agni, where he emerges forth. InAatma, hegraduates
to a martyr, and is met by approval and applause.Rahman says the 'mujra song' was his most difficult
composition. But the effort pays off richly. Main vari vari, with its splendid orchestra boasts of overwhelming classical character. Kavita
Krishnamurthy's curvy crooningis suitably seductive and ably supported by Reena Bharadwaj's subdued refrains.
Heavy on arrangement, the playfulness of Holi re's verse does not tread on catchy grounds. In the end, it's just a boisterous piece of music, which expresses
symphonic chaos, but lacks the rhythm of mischief. Secrets of the heart are passionately revealed in Rasiya re
. Uniquely, this is intense, not dark and flirtatious, not flippant. Be warned though, Rasiya is not easy listening. It will try your patience. Give it some
space to grow on you.Life isa bustling market with a price tag foreverything. So goes Javed Akhtar's similein
Takey takey. Sardonic and scoffing, Takey takes on the dishonest society. It is more of a visual song that tries to make a point
without really being entertaining.Emotions run high in Rahman's penetrating rendition of the magnificently staged
Al maddath maula. Once the album gets over, there is a lingering feeling of disappointment. There are times when the soundtrack
rises to escalating heights only to limp awkwardly later. Though the score is monumental, it is not Rahman at his best.

Re: [arr] Re: Rasiya - Rising

2005-07-18 Thread Anand Bharathan

It is strange how the same music has different
effect on different people. I got hooked on to Rising the very first time I
heard though Swades and Bose had to grow on me. My travel time to and from work
is about one and a half hours and normally I carry a set of atleast 2 albums of
ARR to listen. 98% of the time I am listening to ARR's music only and the
balance 2% I switch to other types of music, like anniyan, which increases my
craving for ARR's music so I am back to his. This is the effect that ARR has on
fans like us. From the time I bought the Rising CD I have not been listening to
any other ARR though I know I will go back. If people don't appreciate the
music it is quite understandable as these people would be casual listeners
probably liking any type of music as long as there is some sound. I have a
friend who could not appreciate Swades music and said ARR is not like the old
days which kind of shocked me but people like them can never understand
because they don't want to. This is a cult group and people like them can never
understand our zeal either. To me ARR has reached an altogether different plane
where he can do no wrong in his music. It is almost not human. While I
make these long drives to my work, his music almost sends me into a trance that
I am driving like a zombie. I know I am not alone because even my sons aged 7
and 5 who are normally uncontrollable are all ears when I switch on his music. I
personally think that any criticism of his music is unwarranted at this stage
especially when he is giving music like Swades, Bose and now Rising.
Agreed that some foot tapping dance numbers are now overdue but probably he
feels that as well. So meanwhile, let us all sitback and enjoy the continuous
flow of great music. As for me, I don't know when I will stop listening to
Rising but I am sure the moment I do another album of the boss will take over.
Sorry if I have bored you all.

Cheers

[arr] Picturisation like Micheal Jacksons nature

2005-07-18 Thread pirathabs
hey,
did u notice that the picturisation of a perticular song where there
is fire all around surya, and big wind, and he is kind of balancing
himself on 2 trees, and punching the ground hard with his leg.
well that is almost like the picturisation of a famous Micheal Jackson
song. i am not sure, but the album is something like nature. Maybe
this is like a thotaal poo malarum, type, where SJ surya might have
asked rehman to remix a micheal jackson song. any commments???

and besides that the first song seems to be duet, and seems to be sung
by A.R.R himself. wow , this is what we are all waiting for!!

Rehman all set for concert tour

Composer and singer A R Rehman is embarking on a concert tour again
after a gap of almost two years.

After the highly successful run of Bombay Dreams at Westend, Rehman
is now committed to a number of international projects, like the Lord
of the Rings.

Lord of the Rings is keeping me quite busy. Since it is a stage
production, it needs a lot of my time, he said.

New frontiers

Rehman is also working on his second composition for the Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra, and on the music score for Shekhar Kapur's film
Buddha.

I think after a point of time you have to shed your favourites and
get new favourites, whether it is in sound, singers or other things,
he said.

Even as the master composer goes about finding his new favourties,
the multi-nation concert tour will keep him busy, as he goes to
London, Amsterdam, Vienna, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore and Bangalore.

Re: [arr] My honest review of The Rising

2005-07-18 Thread kishore kumar

I appreciate for you being honest but the thing is that you should try to have some more listenings to the songs and then give a more honest review. At first I also just couldnt like the songs but on 2-3 listenings i think it is awesome. The instrumentation of the songs are fabulous. Holire is the only song which i think is not very good. but it is indeed good song.

Just hear Takey Takey That is a very new approach to the song.

Bye.Ashok Purohit [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

[arr] Rising and criticism

2005-07-18 Thread aanandk
I'm disappointed and sad that in general this yahoogroup seems to be
unable to take any criticism of Rahman in its stride.

Good fans will not accept poor quality music and still convince
themselves that it is good. Good fans will also not berate people who
make fair criticism of Rahman's music.

Its obvious that the reviews for The Rising have been mixed on
indiafm, rediff and all the other major websites. Despite that, the
moment someone sends a critique here, people jump on him and berate him.

I'm a big fan of Rahman's music and know almost all his songs by
heart. I don't even listen to any other Hindi/Tamil music composer.
However, even I can sense a relatively poor performance when I hear
one. Even Rahman will probably admit that The Rising wasn't his best
work. Ofcourse, it might well be that the movie demanded Rahman to
make such situational music. But on a purely musical basis, its
obvious to me that the Rising doesn't quite cut it.

My advice to some of the members here : Please remain fans, don't
become fanatics.

- Aanand.

[arr] Bangalore Press Meet - Part 1

2005-07-18 Thread Arun KB Ganesh
July 16
Bangalore

Part I

That day morning, I woke up from my sleep, realized that today is the
day ARR would be in Bangalore for the Press meet. I was not sure
whether to try and meet him. But I decided to give it a try. I had
called up ICA on 14th morning, only to be told that the Press Meet was
postponed to 16th. I called them up a few times on Friday, and
finally, even though hesitant, ICA folks asked me to come down to the
hotel at 3pm on 16th, but they did not assure of giving me a pass.
They letting me come to the venue itself was a good sign, so I packed
up my Cams, and headed off to the hotel.

I was at the venue by 2pm, and called up the ICA person again. I was
asked to come to the conference hall on the Ground Floor. With help
from certain quarters, I was given a pass without much problems there,
and I was finally into the conference room.

The meeting was scheduled to start at 3pm. But it got delayed. At
3.45pm, ICA announced that the meeting would start in 15 minutes, and
played a short film consisting of the clippings of the previous
concerts. It was a 14 minute video, and once that ended, the wait was
over. Wearing a dark blue shirt with light blue stripes, black color
pants a light grey suit, came in AR, surrounded by press
photographers, clicking away to their content. He walked straight to
the place where their chairs were, and took his seat, with all the
press photographers around still clicking snaps.

Finally, everyone settled down.

The meeting started off with a brief intro by Roopa Iyer from ICA,
explaining about their ICA, and what their organization is all about.

The function was presided over by Bangalore DGP Mr. Sanyal , who had
to say some kind words about AR.Rahman. He also pointed out that Vande
Mataram was an album that he loved, and he praised Rahman for his work
in VM.

Participants of the press meet: A.R.Rahman
Deepak Gattani , MD, Rapport Global
Ravi Rajagopal, President , ICA
Roopa Iyer , Senior VP , ICA

Deepak Gattani then gave a brief description about the 3D concert. He
said that this concert would be the first of its kind with visual 3D
effects, being done on such a large scale. But he also pointed out
that the hero of the show is AR.Rahman and his music.

Next, it was our Boss' turn.

A.R.Rahman, as usual, with his charming smile:
Good evening everybody. Namashkaara.

Sorry for the wait. The flight landed a bit late the usual (Prayers).

Bangalore is one of my favourite cities in the world actually. I have
worked her 20 years back for Mr.VijaiAnand and Dwarkish. So, when I
come back here, it brings me all those fond memories.

Being the 1st show in Karnataka, it gives me great pleasure to see all
of you all for this 3D concert. I hope all of you support this.

God Bless.

The session was now open to the Media, for the QA.

I had recorded this in a Cam, and have tried my level best to capture
the questions asked by the Press, as some of them did not use a mic to
ask questions, the sound might be feeble.

 Q A

Press : What is the news / progression on Lord of the Rings?

ARR : We have just finished the work, and going for rehearsal in a
couple of months. Its going to open next year.

Press : Are you looking at any other international project other than
Crouching Tiger…? (Journalist meant to mention Warriors of Heaven
and Earth)

ARR : Right now, a lot of things are keeping me quiet busy. Because
LOTR is a stage production, it needs so much of my time.

Press : The process of re-inventing goes on, you see that from
project to project, can you share with us how you go about this?

ARR : Because you will all complain if I do the same thing. (Laughs)
So, I have to. Also, I think, after a point in time, you have to shred
all your favourites, and then get new favourites, whether it's a sound

And, that's it…. (Smiles)

ARR : No, I am not. The whole idea of doing this concert is to
spread peace and to give a message of security, that human minds can

that sense, I think this concert, you want to prove I again and again,

Re: [arr] My honest review of The Rising

2005-07-18 Thread Arijit Debnath

Hi,
It is clear that some fans are not fully satisfied with "The Rising"-but I think only those r not happy who listened to it online.

I also bought the cd on friday, and listened to it in my office pc, with a headphone. I listened to only once and didn't like much.

But returning home after putting it in my SB100Sony DVD player with 5.1 channel, I found a nice classically rich album.

Those who didn't like it much, just one time listen to the "Mai vari vari" song in a 5.1 channel systemyou'll be crazy.

The Rasiya is such a beautiful song-can't say much to appreciate that.

The major attraction of the album is the beatthe taal, the mischivous percussions in all the songs.

The lyrics of the album is also beautiful.

Just listen to this album in a good system or in walkman---then put your comments across.

Not extrordinary . enjoyable . It will go well after the movies release . Perceptions bound to shift to a higher level . But one thing i learned from this ... We need to gauge our expectations

His movie " Oh Darling ! yeh hai india " clears shows that . This shah rukh starrer sank with out a trace . It had good music but all situational songs , some thing like a musical dialogues . I have a complaint that YASH RAJ music company is not yet all promoting THE RISING like they did for BUNTY AUR BUBLY .it needs a lot of patience and time to spot a promo of the THE RISING . Is it planned so ? i doubt the intentions . The best factor abt the movie will be AAMIR KHAN AR Rahman . ExtremE professionalism and sheer taste
of Aamir the soundtrack of the movie by our dear BOSS is the USP of the movie . I completely agree its high time that our Boss gives a pure commercial film in Hindi . two three pure Item songs on the lines of "dhoom machale " or "dus bahane " which has got nothing to do with the story and can be fitted any where as per wish . A party song is quite wanted frm ARR to push away the detractors . Lately , he is into all classics which has brought abt world class compositions . But all these gr8 music is failing to reach the mass audience .over all "THE RISING " ALBUM IS REALLY WORTH IT . NOW , I CANT HATE IT ... I LUV IT ITS SIMPLY SUPERB .** thanx for reading . Best

[arr] dhandiyaa beats....

2005-07-18 Thread Jagdeep

hi..
i guess no one is wrong as it is largely conditioning oriented perception u see..so there r no absolutes here.( smile)butusing a fresh rhythm peice definately gives rise to some variation ( please dont call it a loop...u dont know what it means,apparently...haha!!!)definitely increases the worth of a song if we call it value addition ...yes it adds to the listenability of the song in terms of the freshness appeal and the repeat value...u will always get something new to hear in a freshly recorded rhythm as attempts will be made not to make it sound the same!!!

thats about it i guess.

and as far as fitting or not of a new ' loop' goes ...all i can say is , a newshirt fits u much better than an 5 year old one with frayed collars ...right!!!
haha.

i think i have made a point here.
chill

2005-07-18 Thread Anand Bharathan

C,mon Aanand. What is the benchmark or yardstick
to measure good music. This is not mathematics or science where the output is
defenite. As for a AM or NS, one can definitely say that our boss's music is way
ahead but comparing within ARR's work and saying maybe Lagaan was better, please
give him a break, man. It is like comparing Sachin Tendulkar with Sachin. The
movies, director, situations, time everything is different. I can accept when
you say that may be Rising is not Rahman's best work. That is your opinion and
you are entitled to it. But please do not say words like "poor quality music" or
"relatively poor performance" in relation to The Rising because I do not really
think it is. If he is making music for movies especially period ones he has got
to give situational music. He will definitely not have the flexibility of giving
any music he wants. Otherwise it will stink like AM's music for Asoka where the
music did not relate to the period at all. please do comment.

convincethemselves that it is good. Good fans will also not berate people
whomake fair criticism of Rahman's music. Its obvious that the
reviews for The Rising have been mixed onindiafm, rediff and all the other
major websites. Despite that, themoment someone sends a critique here,
people jump on him and berate him.I'm a big fan of Rahman's music and
know almost all his songs byheart. I don't even listen to any other
Hindi/Tamil music composer. However, even I can sense a relatively poor
performance when I hearone. Even Rahman will probably admit that The
Rising wasn't his bestwork. Ofcourse, it might well be that the movie
demanded Rahman tomake such "situational" music. But on a purely musical

Re: [arr] Rising and criticism

2005-07-18 Thread aanandk
Anand -

I do agree that judging music is a subjective process. It is also not
always true that the most popular music is the best. So let everyone
have their own opinion of Rahman's music.

But that is not my point. I can be a fan of Rahman's music and still
say that some of Rahman's songs were poor. What's wrong with saying
poor quality music? I'm not attacking Rahman personally .. I'm only
criticising his music. Nothing wrong with that!! (unless we lived in a
communist state). Even geniuses perform poorly at times, because
they're human. Rahman is a performer ... he gets paid a lot of money
for his movies, we spend a lot of money on CDs and cassettes, so he is
infat *obliged* to make good music. I don't want to spend $14 on a
Rahman CD only to like 1 or 2 songs. (Ofcourse, he rarely disappoints
me ... so its ok)

I also don't agree with the argument that the songs were situational.
None of us has seen the movie yet, so how does anyone know whether
they were situational? Right now, we are simply judging the songs as a
separate entity.

My main point was that some people here are unable to take criticism
of Rahman. Thats not usually a healthy sign.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers,
- Aanand.

unable to take any criticism of Rahman in its stride.

Good fans will not accept poor quality music and still convince
themselves that it is good. Good fans will also not berate people who
make fair criticism of Rahman's music.

Its obvious that the reviews for The Rising have been mixed on
indiafm, rediff and all the other major websites. Despite that, the
moment someone sends a critique here, people jump on him and
berate him.

RE: [arr] Rahman not at his best - Rediff!!

2005-07-18 Thread Dasun Abeysekera

At times you wonder if Boss will ever be at his best, cause you never know what he can come up with. Forget this reviewer, I don't think even Bossknows that! I was very surprised when he gave Water a 10/10. For somebody who always strives for perfection, and for somebody who strives for spritual integrity, to give a 10/10 to one of his works is very rare. Very, very rare. Judging if a work of art is somebody's best cannot be an analytical or logical. It has to be spiritual and can only be made by the creator of the work him/herself. That's why I don't think this reviewers (or anybody who makes such critical statements)last statement carries any meaning. Be analytical, but you cannot judge somebody else's potential! Rising is a very classy album, and will have very little mass appeal like Lagaan did. But, like I've said many times before, ARR's music is probably as close as
you would get to creative perfection, which to me means bringing about the harmonyunderlying theemotions, situations, characters in one work of art.
I don'tknow if to be sad or happy about the delay in releasing Water. It's like fine wine, aging in the celler somewhere, waiting forus to taste it when it isexquisite! :)But I'd sip it any moment now!!
Hail ARR!

One needs to be used to his music.Ketan Mehta's highly awaited *Mangal Pandey: The **Rising* demands a levelof concentration and discipline from its listener.Woven in the rustic fabric of Javed Akhtar's eloquent metaphors, KailashKher's bouncy singing and Rahman's inspiring notes, *Mangal
mangal* is thealbum's lead track. It has three versions: *Mangal*, *Aatma* and *Agni*.These three pieces expound on the three states of a revolutionary's mind, drawing a parallel between the rising sun and Mangal Pandey. The firstarticulates the simplicity, beauty and purity of daybreak, when therevolutionary is born. Then comes the aggressive *Agni*, where he emergesforth. In *Aatma*, he graduates to a martyr, and is met by approval andapplause.Rahman says the '*mujra* song' was his most difficult composition. But theeffort pays off richly. *Main **vari vari*, with its splendid orchestraboasts of overwhelming classical character. Kavita Krishnamurthy's curvycrooning is suitably seductive and ably supported by Reena Bharadwaj'ssubdued refrains.Heavy on
arrangement, the playfulness of *Holi re*'s verse does not tread oncatchy grounds. In the end, it's just a boisterous piece of music, whichexpresses symphonic chaos, but lacks the rhythm of mischief.Secrets of the heart are passionately revealed in *Rasiya re*. Uniquely, this is intense, not dark and flirtatious, not flippant. Be warned though, *Rasiya* is not easy listening. It will try your patience. Give it some spaceto grow on you.Life is a bustling market with a price tag for everything. So goes JavedAkhtar's simile in *Takey takey*. Sardonic and scoffing, *Takey *takes onthe dishonest society. It is more of a visual song that tries to make apoint without really being entertaining.Emotions run high in Rahman's penetrating rendition of the magnificentlystaged *Al
maddath maula*.Once the album gets over, there is a lingering feeling of disappointment. There are times when the soundtrack rises to escalating heights only to limpawkwardly later. Though the score is monumental, it is not Rahman at hisbest.

[arr] Apunka Choice reviews Mangal Pandey

2005-07-18 Thread naveenjn
Songs of valor and festivity
By Nitika Desai

It is rare that a music composer whose tunes have an unmistakable
flavor of western music churns out a decent album with the music and
melodies that carry rustic hues of India of the nineteenth century. A
R Rahman does that in the music album of `Mangal Pandey – The Rising '.

The movie, starring Aamir Khan , Rani Mukherjee , Amisha Patel and
Toby Stephens in main roles, tells the story of the mutiny of 1857
against the British by the valiant sepoy named Mangal Pandey.

Poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar 's simple and thought-provoking words
capture the very essence of the movie's theme and subject. His lyrics
impassion, incite, and fill you with patriotic fervor. This goes aptly
for the three versions of the title song Mangal Mangal.

The three versions – `Mangal', `Agni' and `Atma' – have similar melody
but different lyrics as each song is set to a different situation. The
first version `Mangal' is about the first spark of revolution – Mangal
Pandey himself.

The second version `Agni' is about the spark becoming a fire – the
great rising against the British, the rising that eventually turned
into a nationwide freedom movement.

The third version (a bit slower one) is about the martyrdom, with
allusions to the ancient Indian belief that body is mortal but the
soul (Atma) is eternal.

Singer Kailash Kher renders all three versions, capturing the rustic
tone with remarkable credibility. Sukhwinder Singh chips in for the
third version.

So much for the patriotic rousing, the album then has a mujra song
`Main Vari Vari'. The song, sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Reena
Bharadwaj, is a very rhythmic composition rooted in Indian classical
music but also containing some beautiful orchestra.

`Holi Re' is one disappointment of this album. The song lacks the
mischief and playfulness that ought to be apparent in any Holi song.
Rather, the number is high on musical arrangement, loud on
orchestration and plain in melody.

`Rasiya Re' doesn't compensate much the disappointment of the previous
number. It is partly so because a song like this one needs repeated
hearings and doesn't catch a listener's fancy at once. The song is a
teasing, titillating number, sung efficaciously by Richa Sharma and
Bonnie Chakraborty.

Javed Akhtar's command over his quill shows in `Takey Takey', a
sarcastic song with the theme that this life is like a bazaar that has
a price for everything. The words in the song are scathing but true. A
R Rahman does full justice to the words and Sukhwinder Singh sings
them with such vigor that he really stirs something inside you. This
is an excellent number.

Al Maddath Maula is a devotional sufi number sung by Rahman, Kailash
Kher, Murtaza and Kadir. The song gradually rises in tempo and
concludes at an `ecstatic' high. Another notable composition of this
album.

In short, the music of `Mangal Pandey – The Rising' is very much
unlike the scores of other Bollywood films. The songs have rustic
flavor and a variety ranging from patriotism and mujra to festivity.

 Hi,
It is clear that some fans are not fully satisfied with The
Rising-but I think only those r not happy who listened to it online.

I also bought the cd on friday, and listened to it in my office pc,

But returning home after putting it in my SB100 Sony DVD player with
5.1 channel, I found a nice classically rich album.

Those who didn't like it much, just one time listen to the Mai vari
vari song in a 5.1 channel systemyou'll be crazy.

The Rasiya is such a beautiful song-can't say much to appreciate
that.

The major attraction of the album is the beatthe taal, the
mischivous percussions in all the songs.

The lyrics of the album is also beautiful.

Just listen to this album in a good system or in walkman---then put

 HI all,
Rahmans magic has been working on me since Roja. Working late at

time, I
thought of listening to Rising at raaga.com
I just heard Mangal Pandey on raaga.com.
I am surprisedI mused...hey, is it Rahman...? Except for Mangal
Mangal and Maula, I couldnt find any song that could mesmerize like his
 other songs.
May be, more of north indian instruments are being used, considering
the background of this film. But what I think is this album looks like
being made in haste...maybe rahman needed more time to give finishing
 touches to other songs..
Maula Maula...is wonderful, and I really appreciate it.
Again, its just that this is only my honest opinion, not criticism. Its
just that I found the album this way, without generalizing, cos I know
that Rahman has already proved his talent long back, and no doubt that
we have too much expectations from his every album.
For die hard arr fans (that includes me, give it a couple of listening
online, and then go for the CD..). I will certainly buy it, but not for
 all songs.
And one more thing, its not that I am here to critisize or judge any
person...I am too small for that...I am only talking in neutral
sensetaking the things as they are and not the fantasy of my mind.
We have not seen the movie, and may be the song will perfectly blend
with the film, but only the songs doesnt stand alone, like his earlier
 work.
 Your comments are expectedplz reply.

Re: [arr] Rising and criticism

2005-07-18 Thread sriharsha24
Ok, Rising music is not titillating for many I guess. Fine, but what
is that u guys were expecting? A fast tappy number?? a duet song?? use
of modern instruments?

If u were expecting all the above, the film wud be a comedy. As said
its a period film with differnt story (its not Lagaan again). They are
the creators and they know what to give.

Its easy for we youngsters to throw our opinions. Ask people like
Naushad, and the contemporaries of RD Burman. They'll know the essence
of it. Its like asking Sachin to hit century each time he plays. Its
like asking to score 100 marks in each exam.

I guess we r demanding too much. Try appreciating and have some faith.
Even if the music is bad, let it pass there is still music and
life ahead.

relatively poor performance in relation to The Rising because I do

period ones he has got to give situational music. He will definitely

[arr] Roja made him Raja

2005-07-18 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
  Roja made him Raja

A.R. Rahman is a man of few words. But, discovers DEEPA GANESH, he has a
desperate need to
connect with people
The Hindu

DOWN-TO-EARTH A.R. Rahman: `Film is a very powerful medium and I believe that a
lot of people
should share it'

If you've been to Tirupathi, you'll know the scene. You waited and waited with
bated breath,
and finally when your turn came, all you got was a fleeting glimpse of the
deity. You went with
a hundred things in mind, but instead you had to contend with those surly god's
own men
snapping, Jaragandi, jaragandi... (Move on, move on... ). You came away
with a hole in
your heart.

Despite the markedly different audience (plush environs of a star hotel),
waiting for A.R.
Rahman — in a long queue of eager-beaver journos, aspiring singers, hopeful
producers and
directors, friends and fans — was something like a Tirupathi moment. Each of
you get five
minutes, came a voice, which carried with it an air of overwhelming generosity.

What does one ask in five minutes to someone who redefined Indian film music
and the world's
perception of it? That too to a man who has such a huge body of work to his
credit and seems so
frightfully reticent? But the mild-mannered Rahman allayed all apprehensions
and graciously
said even after my five minutes were up: Go on. In fact, he even offered me a
second chance —
a precious 10 minutes!

A trailblazer

Rahman is truly amazing for the manner in which he stormed into the Indian film
music scene
even before establishing his regional credentials. With his debut film Roja in
1991, he became
a national phenomenon, bagging the Rajkamal for it. Rahman acknowledged that it
was all part of
a conscious design. I wasn't too happy with the I-don't-want-to-listen-it
attitude of our
youngsters towards film music. Why can't we get our guys to listen to our own
music rather than
Michael Jackson? I didn't want us to lose the market out to the West. The music
had to be cool,
it had to be rooted, and yet had to branch out. It was like the wild
imagination of a child...
but it worked... It did travel beyond Chennai and had people, explained the
gifted composer.

And having a studio of his own has helped him in a big way. He has had the
freedom of working
on his tunes day and night, for days, months and years (he worked almost for a
year on the
Rangeela song and worked for a good six months on Roja's Tamizha Tamizha),
until he was fully
satisfied with it. I have rubbed many a producer on the wrong way by
disturbing the schedule,
but it has paid off.

In the case of his blockbuster album Vande Mataram too, he was fully aware of
what he was
doing. If it changed the image of India from a peace-loving country to a
nuclear powerhouse, it
was intended. Rahman and his friend Bharat Bala conceived it as a flag-waving,
jingoistic
declaration, a mantra of every kid in the country. It had to be unlike the one
that has been
played on the radio for years, a muffled kind of a sound. I wanted a sound that
would connect
me with people and capture a collective energy.

But going by Rahman's style, which has a visual texture to it, his version of
Vande Mataram
doesn't capture the celebration of Indian landscape in Bankim Chandra's poem.
It wasn't
intended that way, came the concise reply. With Vande Mataram, Rahman, who
gave Indian music a
global feel, also re-asserted himself as a gizmo freak. (In fact, he is said to
spend most of
his money on acquiring new electronic gadgets.) Not that he has made only
foot-tapping numbers;
he did classical pieces such as Kanna mucchi yenada in Natakuranji for
Kandukondein
Kandukondein and he did sweeping melodies like Uyire for Bombay along with
songs like
Rukkumani and Mukkala Muqabala. Somehow, people just put all my melodies
on the backburner
and remembered me for only rhythm-driven songs. But things have changed since
Lagaan. They have
woken up to the other aspects in me. Rahman remembered how on his way to
Gulbarga from
Hyderabad, he was playing a soft song and the car driver threatened to fall
asleep if he didn't
play a fast one. But during one of his trips to Germany, an admirer came up to
him to say how
much he liked the songs in Zubeidaa, a film that failed at the box-office. I
take all
criticisms objectively, though I believe in elevating the tastes of the
listener, he
maintained.

Back to roots

Nevertheless, to the layman, Rahman has always been someone with a strong
Western orientation,
unlike Ilaiyaraja who with all his veneration for baroque music, has strong
oriental roots. The
manner in which Ilaiyaraja rendered Tyagaraja's krithi Tulasidala in a
western idiom and his
current orchestral symphony Thiruvasagam stands testimony. Rahman too is
working on a project
called Conference of the Words, a book based on a Sufi tale of self-discovery.
This will be
turned into an orchestra and will be premiered in Birmingham. And like his true
self, I'm
going to take a very long

i think you are the only one speaking like this. have
you been reading about the opinions of the group
members? you probably were expecting another roja or
rangeela. you must understand that this is a period
movie(148 year old story). the songs are basically to
enhance the feel of the period of 1857. they are not
for casual listening and we probably are not used to
this kind of music. inspite of this, the songs are
really good. mein vari and rasiya are exceptional.
you must listen to it couple of times more.

And about Ah Aah, you haven't even listened to the
songs yet. so keep your commens reserved. Have you
listened to the song Pookkum Malarai from Udaya?

It was ARR who brought up the standards of the
Indian music industry. You want him to go back to
London?

[arr] ARR... The Rising

2005-07-18 Thread anil2810
Hello Friends,

It would be appreciated to have a look at the audio review from
MusicIndia Online, before criticising one of the Great Musician in the
Industry.

Criticism is always good, when it's (criticism) worth.

Some excerpt from the review.

`Mangal Pandey' is not the kind of sound track that we come
across everyday. The album is different and built according to the
screenplay rather than for pleasant listening. Most of the tracks are
situational and will flow with the film. The effort of A.R.Rehman and
Javed Akhtar to bring out the desired result is evident and they walk
away with applaud for the kind of work they've infused in the
number.

2005-07-18 Thread Ashok Purohit

I agree with Aanand. Lets understand taht we have responsibilities as a fan too.taking both constructive criticism and appreciation for our boss in stride. There's more to discuss than only praise our boss...the very fact that we are here proves that we r all rahman fans...so that doesnt need much of discussion to claim repeatedly the same fact.
Use fair-value judgement, I am sure, our boss would rather appreciate taht.

Despite that, themoment someone sends a critique here, people jump on him and berate him.I'm a big fan of Rahman's music and know almost all his songs byheart. I don't even listen to any other Hindi/Tamil music composer. However, even I can sense a relatively poor performance when I hearone. Even Rahman will probably admit that The Rising wasn't his bestwork. Ofcourse, it might well be that the movie demanded Rahman tomake
such "situational" music. But on a purely musical basis, itsobvious to me that the Rising doesn't quite cut it.My advice to some of the members here : Please remain fans, don'tbecome fanatics.- Aanand.

this is all true but this doesnt sound like an ARR interview... never seen Rahman talk this way!!On 19/07/05, Avin DCosta

Urges A R Rahman, currently unhappy with his treatment in BollywoodSubhash K JhaNot that A R Rahman sounds bitter. And not that he can afford to,given his status of one of the leading Asian composers of his times.
But Rahman is rather uncertain about his future in Hindi films.Reason? Too many period films in Hindi. Take the case of 1947:Earth, Zubeida, Lagaan, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Water, Bose: TheForgotten Hero, Kisna among the many. I've worked hard on each of
these themes. But the end-result hasn't been worth it. The songs wereeither pushed into the background or not used at all…or worse still, used badly. I feel very frustrated by this. But what can I do?Composing tunes is my job. How they are used isn't up to me. Rahman
seems unhappy with the way Subhash Ghai used his track 'Hum hain isspal yahan' in Kisna. Though it was a love ballad it wasn't sung bythe lead pair at all. It was placed in the background. That killed
the song's impact. But the worst experience was Bose: The ForgottenHero. It's become Bose: The Forgotten Music, jokes Rehman. I hadworked really hard on the music. But it all totaled to zero finally.
But after Zubeida and Bose I'm doing another film with Shyam Benegal. It's a full-on musical. But please, no more period films for the timebeing. Having had his fill of blasts from the past, Rahman is now
looking at a more contemporary kind of music. All my Hindiassignments at the moment including Rakesh Mehra's Rang De Basantiand Abbas Tyrewala's romantic film are contemporary subjects. I'mquite done with period films for now. I think Mangal Pandey would be
last film of that ilk. Righfully proud of his compositions in thejust-released Mangal Pandey, Rahman reveals how he had been offeredthree film about freedom fighters/warriors including Roland Joffe's
The Invaders. But I finally chose Mangal Pandey. Yeah, the fact thatAamir Khan was in it did influence my decision. Aamir and I reallygelled well during Lagaan. In fact I'm really proud of my work inLagaan and 1947-Earth which also starred Aamir. Going on to speak
about the second part of Deepa Mehta's trilogy, the third part Wateris ready. It's the first project where Rahman has done the songs andnot the background music. I moved away because of the controversies
surrounding the film. What's the point of creating music for aproject that makes some people unhappy? But I saw Water recently. Andit took my breath away. Has there been anything in Hindi music thatRahman has liked lately? Yeah I like M M Kreem's music. His `Jadoo
hai nasha hai' in Jism was a surprise. And I like a couple ofPakistani songs which have been used in Hindi films like Murderrecently.* What's the point of creating music for a project that makes some
people unhappy? But I saw Water recently. And it took my breath awayRahman's problems with Bollywood:* Gets offered for too many period films (Zubeida, Lagaan, The LegendOf Bhagat Singh, Water, Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Kisna)
* Subhash Ghai under-played his love ballad 'Hum hain iss pal yahan'in Kisna by not picturising it on the lead pair* The producers did not adequately promote the soundtrack of ShyamBenegal's Bose: The Forgotten Hero. It's become Bose: The Forgotten
