what u think satisfying music is in a different sense...
Rahman is doin a commercial tamil flick after a year
Between new and ah aah, all his albums had the "growing" effect i.e u
may not like much after the first hearing but after 10 hearings u might
say "this is the best from Rahman"...
but ah aah will not have the growing effect... it will stick after the first hearing...
but very happy to hear tamil from arr after a year!!

[arr] Chennai Fans Meet - Venue changed

Hi Chennai fans,

We have been getting lots of enthusiastic responses from fans in the past few days, which raises the expected number of participants.
Due to this, we have decided to change the venue, as Coffee Day wont be sufficient to house all of us.
The new venue chosen is Tower Park, Annanagar.

Here's the updated meeting plan:-

DETAILS:

Date - 24.07.05, Sunday.
Venue - Annangar Tower park, Anna Nagar, Chennai
Reporting Place inside park - at the Tower in the centre of the park.
Time - 4pm - 7pm.
Directions to reach tower park - Coming from Poonamalle high road, come to Annanagar Round Tana. Take left from Round Tana. From the traffic signal intersection, take right. And you will find Tower park on the left hand side, after a few 100 metres.

I've been seeing quite regularly in Vijay TV about a show 
called "Netru Indru Naalai" which is about to be held in August. Many 
industry big shots like ManiRatnam, Rajiv Menon, Sabu Cyril...and the 
top of all -ARR are going to perform live in this show which is 
supposed to be conducted in Chennai.

Does any one have any news on the venue, date, etc.

Any info in this regard is highly appreciated.

I have no words to describe the album expect AH AAH. Mind blowing, 
especially the track sung by ARR, sure its the song of the Year. 
Follwoing the mixed response for THE RISING, sure there will be no 
complients this time. Full marks to ARR.
Though Tamil ARR fans ever eager for this album, which was due the 
reason that he didn't have any tamil release for nearly 14 months, 
many were not then keen with ARR's association with SJ Surya. Many 
were not that satisfied with NEW and also didn't expect anything 
ROCKING from AH AAH. 
But such negative publicity has favoured this, no would have 
expected such a GREAT album from ARR-SJS pair. Even while hearing 
the songs in trailer, it didn't sound impressive, but hearing the 
full tracks, we keep saying ah aah.
Definitly, AH AAH will end up in ARR's all time best list.
This album will prove advantagous for up coming movies like 
Godfather, which is running with problems. 
Also, it was nice to hear from ARR itself that no more Period Films 
for time being and all upcoming will be commercial. ARR is a bit 
disappointed that his hard work are not well picturised and going 
wasted as background.
The main reason for ARR to continue his association with SJS, is the 
wat he picturised NEW songs. It seems ARR was very much impressed 
with his work, when other dir letdown ARR's work on screen. It seems 
ARR is gelling well with SJS, and soon we could see another 
successful pairs like ARR-Mani, ARR-Shankar etc.

[arr] The Range of music ARR can compose!!!

hi,

I listened to Ah Aah songs today. The music was
excellent! I was totally awestruck listening to his
music. Just a few days back I listened to The Rising
songs. The songs were really impressive! 

But, then think of the wide spectrum of his music,
from movies like Zubeida, The Rising, Water etc. to Ah
Aah, Ayutha Ezhuthu, Thiruda Thiruda etc. 

If there is a MD who can do all styles of music with
nonchalant ease, it is ARR. The different styles of
music are not only across different movies, but within
the same movie too.

Take Ah Aah for instance, on one the melody end there
is "Mayilirage", on the dashy and the fast end there
is "Maramkothiye". The way he has mixed the bass with
thavil and tabla in "Mayilirage" gives a beautiful
feel to the song.

I am really glad that Rahman has given us yet another
of his master pieces(but he made us wait for quite
some time :)).

What can I say about this song?? No words to describe it..
Its definitely the melody of the year..the nadaswaran bit is
mindblowing..the music everything..A Ah is one of ARR's best works!!

Naresh Iyer is a good find..he sounds like Haricharan who sang in
Kathal..

MSV,great song overall..esp the last part sung by Madhushree,its

Here's my two cents for today.

What do people expect from Rahman?  To save the earth?  Re-align the 
planets?  End hunger?  Each and every time that Rahman comes out with 
a brilliant masterpiece, I hear comments like "not up to Rahman's 
standards" or "Rahman not at his best" or "Rahman could have done 
better".  How lame and stupid.  Our boss is a genius with respect to 
his versatility and range of compositions, depth of arrangemens and 
melody, rich use of sound, and very importantly, fitting the music 
well to the situations of the movie which demand these types of 
songs.  The songs of the Rising are appropriate for the type of movie 
and situations in the movie.  Could any other MD have done a better 
job?  Think hard about that.  With Mangal Pandey, what are these 
critics expecting?  A modern day Chaiya Chaiya?  Love songs from 
Taal?  When people write reviews, don't they even consider the type 
of film, period, and story of the film when reviewing the music?

I feel that the music will be vastly more appreciated once the film 
releases, but nothing excuses such lame and overdone comments as the 
ones above.  I am tired of it.  Give Rahman the credit he deserves.  
HE works hard.  His craftmanship is mindblowing.  His melodies are 
haunting.  His knowledge of Indian classical music is astounding.

Is he beyond criticism?  Of course not.  I have no problems with 
people criticizing his songs based on valid reasons.  But, such 
comments above are simply ridiculous and untrue. 

Enjoy Mangal Pandey for the brilliant soundtrack it is.  Don't judge 
it based on what you expected it to be, wanted it to be, and what 
critics think it should be.  I wish I could congratulate Rahman 
himself and it seems that those who know him well on this forum are 
not willing to pass on my heartfelt messages for him through email 
that I have posted mnay times here.  It's not like I'm asking for his 
phone number or address.

Anyway, enjoy the music of Mangal Pandey.  Another beautiful 
soundtrack to add to his many.

Idiot Subhash Jha doesnt know probably that Jodha Akbar is also a
periodic movie and the BOSS is doing music for it. 
I dont agree ARR would never do periodic music. Bcos he very well
understand that those are the only wher he can show that he is totally
different from others. I remeber ARR saying that the recent masla
movies doesnt give scope to his experiments.
Dont know why reporters are liars these days

Not that A R Rahman sounds bitter. And not that he can afford to,
given his status of one of the leading Asian composers of his times. 
But Rahman is rather uncertain about his future in Hindi films.
Reason? "Too many period films in Hindi. Take the case of 1947:
Earth, Zubeida, Lagaan, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Water, Bose: The
Forgotten Hero, Kisna among the many. I've worked hard on each of 
these themes. But the end-result hasn't been worth it. The songs were
either pushed into the background or not used at all…or worse still,
used badly. I feel very frustrated by this. But what can I do?
Composing tunes is my job. How they are used isn't up to me." Rahman 
seems unhappy with the way Subhash Ghai used his track 'Hum hain iss
pal yahan' in Kisna. "Though it was a love ballad it wasn't sung by
the lead pair at all. It was placed in the background. That killed
the song's impact." But the worst experience was Bose: The Forgotten
Hero. "It's become Bose: The Forgotten Music," jokes Rehman. "I had
worked really hard on the music. But it all totaled to zero finally. 
But after Zubeida and Bose I'm doing another film with Shyam Benegal.
It's a full-on musical. But please, no more period films for the time
being." Having had his fill of blasts from the past, Rahman is now 
looking at a more contemporary kind of music. "All my Hindi
assignments at the moment including Rakesh Mehra's Rang De Basanti
and Abbas Tyrewala's romantic film are contemporary subjects. I'm
quite done with period films for now. I think Mangal Pandey would be 
last film of that ilk." Righfully proud of his compositions in the
just-released Mangal Pandey, Rahman reveals how he had been offered
three film about freedom fighters/warriors including Roland Joffe's
The Invaders. "But I finally chose Mangal Pandey. Yeah, the fact that
Aamir Khan was in it did influence my decision. Aamir and I really
gelled well during Lagaan. In fact I'm really proud of my work in
Lagaan and 1947-Earth which also starred Aamir." Going on to speak 
about the second part of Deepa Mehta's trilogy, the third part Water
is ready. It's the first project where Rahman has done the songs and
not the background music. "I moved away because of the controversies 
surrounding the film. What's the point of creating music for a
project that makes some people unhappy? But I saw Water recently. And
it took my breath away." Has there been anything in Hindi music that
Rahman has liked lately? "Yeah I like M M Kreem's music. His `Jadoo 
hai nasha hai' in Jism was a surprise. And I like a couple of
Pakistani songs which have been used in Hindi films like Murder
recently."

HOOKED TO A SONG AND IT GOES LIKE ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION OF ASCENDING

'Mayilirahe' is a fantastic song..Madhushri & Naresh,
both hv done a wonderful job. Truly a gr8 melody. Just
love the way he's blended the thavil, tabla & bass!
kudos to Naresh (Super Singer Finalist)..he sounds
like Karthik. He's gonna go a long way...
I also loved 'Thigu thigu' for its unique composition.
The charanams r so melodious..again Sadhana
mesmerises.. but who's the male singer with her..no
mention.
I cant believe its Shreya in 'Thaduvathu'. May be bcoz
i've listend to poor qlty..but I still hv doubts reg
the singer. She sounds so diff...
hv to yet get my Cd...but i'm dyin to get it...

Music release today of 'Anbe Aaruyire' 
- 20.07.2005

Wielding a nadaswaram, S J Surya looks like Shivaji in 'Thillana 
Mohanambal.' Next to him in the place of Baliah, is Nila with the 
thavil. Even as you see the image, your ears feel like listening to 
the music.
Taking a hold on our musical inclinations, we let our eyes roam over 
the posters pasted around Albert theatre. This is where the audio 
release of 'New' also took place.

The music release of 'Anbe Aaruyire' or 'A Aa' in short, was for 
special invitees only, since S J Surya and A R Rehman were taking 
part. 

S J Surya plays the role of a journalist in 'A Aa.' When he is not 
collecting news, Surya is busy correcting Nila! Like a few cashew 
nuts dispersed in a thick halwa, the film is dispersed with a few 
scenes of Nila in sari!

A small bird told us that the music in the film is fantastic. The 
lyrics for the 20 somethings are written by 70 year old Vaali. As 
in 'New,' dance choreographer Brinda has made some brisk movements in 
this film too. After the disappointment over 'Anniyan' songs, the 
songs of 'A Aa' will come as a welcome relief. (Please hold on till 
tomorrow morning for details on the music release function)

After 'New,' the women activists must be eagerly awaiting 'A Aa' to 
scream out their anti slogans and fling those rotten eggs. 

Could this be another victory for S J Surya?

  You are right..I never expected anything from A Ah..and thought ARR 
is going to give something like NEW..which I was not happy with...

I never expected ARR to give a CLASSIC with SJS!! This is one of 
ARR's greatest work!!

I just have one complaint..in the mayiliragai..in the starting I dont 
know y the female singer hums abruptly ending the nice nadaswaram 
music..her voice sounds like janaki..I cant stand her voice!!looks 
awkward!! otherwise the song is another snehithane!! Class!!

Yes Dwarkish was the long time comedian and now he is a producer.
Remeber Aaptamitra (later this was redone as Chnadramukhi in Tamil) was
his production.
I had met him a few months ago and just told that he should pull ARR
and he said in a pleasing way that he doesnot have such huge money to

Today there was a news item on Indian express about an Indo-Japanese co-
production to be directed by Bharatbala. The story is to be penned by 
M.T.Vasudevan Nair. There was no mention of the music director. Hope 
its by ARR. The news item also mentioned that Bharatbala's claim to 
fame was the video of A.R.Rahman's masterpiece Vande Matharam.

Awesome sound quality in The Rising.  And that not listening to the 
original CD (have bought original CD and will be getting copy soon).

I find the soundtrack to be quite addictive with the great rhythms and 
very energetic and bright songs. The use of the Flamingo in Rasiya is 
just mindblowing.  

How far can Rahman go?  There is no stopping this guy.

The Songs are 
fantabulouswhimsicalphenomenal..miraculous...
..incredible. marvelousprodigious... 
stupendousunbelievable. wonderful...far-
fetched.. grotesque.. sensational.ripping!!

My Ratings are:
1.Anbe aruyirae--- our guru(1000/10),999 points for ARR's voice 
alone.
2.Mayiliragae madhushri,naresh iyer(25/10)
3.Vaugirai...hariharan,chitra(50/10)
4.Thigu thigu sadhanaa sargam(15/10)
5.Thazhuvudu... s.p.b,shreya ghosal(25/10)
6.Maramkothii...shankar mahadevan,shalani, vasundra dass, blaze
(10/10)

Lyrics are good too. Glad that Valee refrained from using English 
Words.

Am already suffering from Rahman fever. Symptoms are:
1) Anbe aruyirae song comes to my mind every 5mins.
2) CD player volume is always in "Max volume".
3) Right now i have only one CD("Ah..Aah") in my collection.
4) Repeat button was never used so frequently.
5) Equalizers doesnt seem to do work at all.

Hi Arvind,

Nadaswaram (or Nagaswaram for the purists) has not been modelled
physically yet, to be played by the synth. The closed instrument that
has been modelled is "oboe".

IMHO, it could be a sampled sound or even played by an artist (but it
is too clean and pitch bends sounds bit artificial). I managed to get
a similar sounding instrument using SwarPlug samples of Nadaswaram by
adding some reverb and playing around with ADSR. This is what my brain
could conjure up in couple of hours and I could be totally off in a
tangent.

The more I hear it, at places, it does sound like Shenai. Let us see
what others in the group think.

Dude, now I can't get that tune out of my head and you are partially
responsible :) :)

Hi Friends,

 Well, it looks like the `Emperor' strikes back. And what a way to 
announce his arraival! Like many fans here and all over Tamil Nadu, I 
too was feeling His absence. YSR and HJ were doing a pretty good job, 
but they are just not enough to fill the gigantic void created by the 
absence of ARR here. And there can't be a more apt song to start of 
such an album, than one sung by ARR Himself and the lyrics suiting 
this situation. It is like an old friend for yours returning after a 
long time and trying to console you. Only directed towards `Aararai 
kodi tamizhar' saying `na ungal nanban'. A lot of parts in the song 
feel like ARR is talking directly to his fans.

 Well he has shown why he is the only `isai puyal' with some earth 
shattering stuff. The collection of songs is very much like early ARR 
stuff, like kadalan and thiruda thiruda (opening with a fast song, 
then hit you with a fantastic melody).

 Finally a request, if someone could transcribe the lyrics (atleast 
the first song), I would really appreciate it, and am sure so will 
many other here.

Yes it does not look ARR at all. Like he criticized Subhaish Ghai, 
picturization of his songs, and the way he said clearly that 'no 
more period films'. It is certainly not ARR. Moreover it is also 
strange the way he praised 'Jadu hai nasha hai'. And then he praised 
Amar Jamal who sang songs of Murder, it looks it is dont to make it 
an issue. To make the copycat Anu Malik against ARR, why did not ARR 
give credit to Anu Malik but the singer Amar Jamal.

  When I heard Vaali was the lyricist I was both happy and sad. Happy 
cos ARR has given some fantastic music when with vaali, and sad cos

silly way for rhyming, like mixy n pepsi...etc. I 2 am really happy he

MUSIC REVIEW OF MANGAL PANDEY - THE RISING

Students of history have reasons to smile as Bollywood unveils another 
undiscovered chapter of
Indian history - 'Mangal Pandey'. The legendary hero who triggered the first 
bombshell of
Independence in 1857 is glorified on celluloid under the technical expertise of 
director Ketan
Mehta. Aamir Khan, the main protagonist of Oscar nominated 'Lagaan', essays the 
character of
"Mangal Pandey" with the line-up of Indian and British actors. Toby Stephens, 
the villain of
James Bond's last adventure 'Die Another Day', plays British Commanding Officer 
"William
Gordon". 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' is an epic saga that has been set in the 
backdrop of
Indian independence struggle of 1857. Like 'Lagaan' the film unravels the 
atrocities of the
British Raj on fellow Indians. The film is the story of love, friendship and 
betrayal that
exudes the awakening of Indians for Independence after years of foreign rule 
and its
suppression. Besides Aamir Khan and Toby Stephens, Rani Mukherjee, Amisha Patel 
and British
actor Coral Beed play pivotal roles in the film. Musical genius A.R Rehman has 
instrumented the
musical soundtracks for this action-oriented period film. Eminent poet and 
renowned lyricist
Javed Akhtar has penned the lyrics for the album that metaphor with the period 
of the British
rule. Unfortunately, this colossal combination has fetched disappointing 
results for films
(Mani Ratnam's 'Dil Se' and Subhash Ghai's 'Kisna'). 'Mangal Pandey' is a great 
piece of
craftsmanship that will be widely appreciated by cinema lovers. Lately, Rehman 
rendered some
soulful melodies for 'Bose - The Forgotten Hero' and was applauded for another 
period film 'The
Legend of Bhagat Singh'. This album provides another feather in his cap with 
the prized
attraction being "Holi" song rendered by Aamir Khan. The album has eight 
original soundtracks
on Yash Raj Music.

Side A has four soundtracks with "Mangal Mangal" and "Holi Re" being the 
spotlights. The
much-awaited album opens with an enthusiastic voice of Kailash Kher in "Mangal 
Mangal". The
soundtrack emanates from the rise of legendary freedom fighter "Mangal Pandey" 
with some vocals
clubbed with orchestration of musical instruments (dholak, tabla and nagadas). 
The soundtrack
works as background score as it has two other versions. Kailash Kher's fervent 
voice spells the
passion that ignited fellow countrymen with the adventures of Mangal Pandey. 
Javed Akhtar's
lyrics depict vivid lifestyles of the countrymen.

Traditional "mujra" is presented in the brisk and effervescent voices of Kavita 
Krishnamurthy
and Reema Bharadwaj in "Main Vari Vari". The track is conventional "mujra" that 
has been
choreographed on Rani Mukherjee. Recently, a similar track "Chillman Utha" was 
heard in Subhash
Ghai's 'Kisna' and this song falls in this cadre. A.R Rehman impresses but this 
is certainly
not the finest of his traditional soundtracks.

Aamir Khan turns vocally boisterous along with conventional singers with the 
glowing colors of
"Holi" in the lively rendered soundtrack "Holi Re". A.R Rehman scores perfect 
ten as he
delivers his finest soundtrack. Udit Narayan, Madhushree, Srinivas, Chinmaye 
and Aamir Khan
sing this fun-frolicking song that describes this colorful festival. Udit 
Narayan sings
brilliantly and deserves all the accolades for delivering free flowing passion 
with enthusiasm.
Madhushree shines bright with Srinivas and Chinmaye supporting well in chorus. 
Aamir Khan
renders the fast pace lyrics with rural touch, and the track encores to the 
"Holi" song of V
Shantaram's 'Navrang'. Aamir Khan impresses with his vocals after "Kya Bolti 
Tu" ('Ghulam') and
this might prove to be a crowd puller. It scores over "Let's play Holi" from 
'Waqt' and
promises to be chartbuster.

Traditional folk singer Richa Sharma along with new talent Bonnie Chakraborty 
sings emotionally
crafted soundtrack "Rasiya". The slow pace gives the feel of loneliness, 
anticipating the tinge
of seduction. The track passes through series of emotions that are being 
experienced by the
beloved for her lover. It's above average soundtrack that sounds situational 
and fails to
impress.

Side B has four original soundtracks with two versions of "Mangal Mangal". 
Kailash Kher renders
second version of the track "Mangal Mangal" in "Mangal Mangal (Agni)". This is 
a fiery
presentation that shows violent facades of events with some fast pace music. 
Heavy drumming
with fine mixing of vocals and instruments creates an ambience of passion. It's 
brief yet an
enthralling soundtrack.

A fun-loving rural ambience is created with practical realities of life in fast 
pace soundtrack
"Takey Takey". Sukhwinder Singh along with Kailash Kher and Kartick Das Baul, 
sings this
fun-loving soundtrack. The song creates a feeling that everything comes with 
"takey" (money).
Some children's chorus has been added to make it merrier with rustic

[arr] Rising..

after listening the album for the first time, i was about write the 
same "Disappointment" cliche'in the group.  but i said to myself.. 
hey hold on..  the album is certainly upto something..  cos it is 
arr.

we indians became quiet estranged to this kind of music.  over the 
period, indian music became too sweet and pretentious.  and thus it 
became sometimes a bit hard for us to digest the tunes that are very 
folky and rusty.  i think that is why the album disappointed a few 
people.

i have to accept that i am not really up that standard to enjoy all 
the songs of rising.  but..  i loved the "main wari wari" and "Holi"

they are really really awesome. 

I will give full marks to the rest of the songs too.  because i 
realised i am starting to like them.

Main wari wari is my pick of the album.  a very unique tune.

And ya!  it is time for arr to stop doing the period films.  but 
what ever he has done, will be remembered forever.

after listening to the rising album, i dont know why.. i am thinking 
about an arr song with no background music.. a unique melody, little 
rusty.. little raw..  a bit off from the rhythm..  unperfect in 
singing and awesome as a song..

i dont know if i would get to hear a song of that kind or not.

Interview : A R Rehman brilliantly going ahead


 
Indian music wizard AR Rehman has enthralled with his resounding 
music time and again. His music is universal and one can hear him 
everywhere. He sounds in satellite channels, discos, festivities, 
and all over the place. He is certainly the uncrowned king of the 
music world, a celebrity in his own right, a music composer who is 
going to set out for the globe soon. He has composed all kinds of 
music but in the recent times one can see him concentrating more on 
the period films. `Mangal Pandey - The Rising' being the recent one 
form his kitty. However, he has decided to bid adieu to period films 
for the time being. 

Excerpts from the Interview:

Why have you taken the decision to drift yourself from period films?

Over the years I've done many Hindi period films. The list 
reads `1947: Earth', `Zubeidaa', `Lagaan', `The Legend Of Bhagat 
Singh', `Water', `Bose: The Forgotten Hero', `Kisna' and the 
recent `Mangal Pandey - The Rising'. Composing music for a period 
demands lots of dedication and research. I have put in my best 
efforts for all these films but I've not been contended with the 
result it has yielded. 

Why do you believe so?

The result is obvious and one can see it before the eyes. The songs 
have not got their due as far as the cinematography is concerned. 
They were either placed in the background, used poorly or were not 
used at all. As a composer this definitely hurts. I've got 
aggravated and annoyed with this thing. But I'm helpless, I'm left 
to swallow my own anger.  The filmmaker knows how to better put the 
songs and my work is only to compose them. 

Which are the films that have made you feel that your songs were not 
placed correctly?

To start with Subhash Ghai's `Kisna'. `Hum Hain Iss Pal Yahan' was 
an enchanting love ballad and it was due to be sung by the lead 
pairs Vivek Oberoi and Isha Shervani. However this didn't happen and 
the song was instead put in the background. The value of the song 
got lost due to it. 

There was a bitter experience in `Bose: The Forgotten Hero'. I had 
built the music with great efforts. The producers of the film Sahara 
had assured me a grand launch for the music and also a grand 
premiere for the film. I was surprised when nothing took place. I've 
been associated with Shyam Benegal for `Zubeidaa' and `Bose' and I'm 
also doing another full musical venture with him.

Are you certain that you're going to burn your fingers no more 
composing periodic music?

For the time being I'm sure about it.  I believe that `Mangal 
Pandey' is my last period film. I did `Mangal Pandey' only for the 
sake of Aamir Khan because ever since `Lagaan' we share a very good 
rapport. I've also composed for him `1947-Earth'. Right now I'm 
doing only contemporary Hindi assignments. My projects in the 
pipeline include Rakesh Mehra's `Rang De Basanti' and Abbas 
Tyrewala's romantic film. Both of them have modern subjects.

How well is your mega-musical production `Lord of the Rings' 
progressing?

I'm all ready to release it in London in 2006.

 
But London had the recent terrorist attack!

So what! I'm not scared. Music is all about spreading peace and 
everything comes after it. It gives the glimpse of civilization and 
humanity that is still alive. 

What are you other plans?

Loads of world tour on the cards. By the end of July I'll set for UK 
for the world musical tour. I try to give dimension to my music and 
offer the audience something different. I'll complete my world tour 
in Bangalore. Here I've planned an innovative three-dimensional 
concert that is going to be refreshing and revitalizing. I just plan 
to keep going!

MT turns to films again, this time English

KOCHI: The pen that translated Kerala's rustic life and colours into 
immortal words is all set to script an international movie. 
Malayalam's M T Vasudevan Nair is in talks with a Japanese 
production house to write an English film to be set against the 
backdrop of the Samurai land.

An initiative of the Japan-based non-resident Indians, the film 
would launch MT into the global orbit of filmmaking, making him the 
first Malayali writer to attempt a foreign tongue. Bharat Bala, 
director of the proposed movie, has already met MT and obtained his 
go-ahead for the project. Bharat Bala had hit the headlines with his 
Vande Mataram, the A R Rahman masterpiece that rekindled a nation's 
patriotic emotions.

The film is being funded by the Japanese NRIs who approached Bharat 
Bala with the idea. "Bala wanted MT to do the script. Though MT had 
some initial apprehensions, he agreed to give it a try. Bharat Bala 
has gone back with this message to finalise the project," sources 
close to MT told this website's newspaper.

The story would definitely have an Indian angle. The one-line theme 
has been adopted and further discussions are on. The work on the 
script would soon begin in Mauritius, sources said. "The key role 
would be played by a Japanese superstar. There are a few names under 
consideration. The producers are aiming at both the Indian and 
Japanese movie buffs," sources said.

Confirming the film project, MT told this website's newspaper over 
phone from Chennai that the work was in the initial stage only. "We 
did have some preliminary discussions. But it's being further 
finetuned," he said. On the theme of the movie, MT said: "It 
definitely would be an Indian subject. Or else I won't be able to do 
justice to it." The film would also mark MT's first attempt at 
creative writing in English.

[arr] Was the lyrics of "Anbe Aaruyire" written for ARR's Tamil comeback?

I don't know in what situation does the song "Anbe Aaruyire" comes in 
the movie AH AAH, but the lyrics of that song looks as if that it is 
written to showcase the comeback of ARR. Phrases like "Aadiaan 
Tamilian, Naan ungal Nanban", "Neegal ellamal naan engu ellai" and 
full of Charanam showcases the fact.
After a long time we have got a ARR song which makes us to get up 
early in the morning especially to hear the song that too repeatedly.
In the 24hr of the audio release i have heard "Anbe Aaruyire" 50 times.
I can't be alone without hearing that song.

Hi friend,
  
  I am a new member of the club.Being an ARR fan , I think I was a 
little late in joining the club.I recently heard Mangal Pandey 
songs,ARR has done a wonderful job.I was waiting for something like 
this from the master for years.I think Rahman-Aamir group is gonna 
rock the country again after Lagaan. What do u think? Something I 
found over the years is that ARR music lives on.They are as fresh as 
it was at the time of composing.Everyday morning when I hear to his 
music,I feel a lot more energetic & refreshed .This is just a 
beginning for me in this club.We'll keep in touch.

RAHMAN FACTORY HAS ALWAYS DELIVERED GOODS MORE THAN EXPECTATIONS...

back with a bang !! when did he go out to be back !!! he was always 
there, the only thing was his correct choice of movies. if our boss 
scores for movies like ah aah once in every 4 months, nobody can b 
near him.
superb sounds, syncs, loops, high pitches, native instruments and 
mixing makes it a perfect album.

anbe song for the first time was written for a MD and not for a hero.

his voice in high pitch is amazing.

sheer magic

i like the thazhuvdhu song very much small voice modulations 
captured carefully.

After a big expectation.. it was totally BIG disappointment after 
hearing the songs of Ah Aah. I dont feel like hearing again also. There 
is nothing much or nothing new. I think ARR is being half half and not 
doing quiet well on these days. Either should give a good music or 
shoud not give .. I have never given up ARR so far.. but this time.. is 
not upto any expectation..

Good catch Ravisdev.

Omission of this film does put a q.mark on the authenticity 
of the article.

If, for a moment, you consider interview to be authentic, 
(by ARR) you would realize that he is not unhappy with his 
music. He agrees that he gave his best for period movies.

What he is saying that his music was not treated well by the 
directors of period movies. The songs were placed in the 
background, or were dropped altogether, or were partly used. 
Thus he feels that the audiences do not get to see the songs 
which would have improved the spread of his music.

I do not agree with ARR on this generalisation about period 
movies.

1. Dil Se was NOT a period movie, but it had ai ajanabi 
pushed to background and partly used, and it had thayya 
thayya dropped.

2. Swades was NOT a period movie, but it has aahistaa dropped.
--
on the other hand

3. Lagaan was a period movie, but it did full justice to 
each and every song.

4. Legend of Bhagat Singh was a period movie, but it also 
did full justice to each and every song.

Thus, I would consider 4 as enough examples to render this 
generalisation incorrect.

ARR should generalize on the basis of directors who spoil 
his songs, and who do not.

Then, he should go by hard statistics. Even if Manirathnam 
or Gowarikar spoil ARR's one or two songs, their intention 
should not be doubted, because they treat most of the songs 
pretty respectably.

Deepa Mehta had spoiled almost every song in 1947Earth. 
Let's wait for water.

Subhash Ghai has an excellent sense of music, but he is a 
spent force as a director/ visualizer, thus he is unable to 
properly handle ARR's songs, even is he wishes.

Shankar has always treated ARR's song in the best way, hence 
if Shankar makes a period movie, he can be expected to treat 
the songs well.

Shyam Benegal has totally spoiled ARR's music in Bose. He 
does not deserve to work with ARR in future. In any case, 
Bose was a stupidly made movie.

so on.

after Aa Aah it is very obvious one should have a CD/ cassette copy of
the movie. So US guys any news about when and where will the music be
available. I know Rising is available in most online stores in the US.

I think it is Rahman's doing if people do not consider above 
factors.

A period movie should have music which creates the 
environment of that period. That means that the songs should 
use only those instrumnents which were available in that 
era, and should have lyrics having words/ language used in 
that era.

ARR's earlier period movies all had non-period music. He 
always used latest instruments and never was particular 
about lyrics. Kisna was 1947-ish, but hum hain is pal yahaan 
had nothing 1947-ish feel. it could have been as well a song 
set in 2006.

Even in Rising, the tunes are totally different from most of 
earlier works, thus some semblance of "period" has come to 
it. But did he use only 1857's instruments in it, did he got 
the lyrics written with 1857's language?

If no, then why accuse criticis/ fans when they discount the 
"period-ness" of ARR's music.

Waiting for A. R. Rahman in a long queue of eager-beaver journos, aspiring singers, hopeful producers and directors, friends and fans is a test of patience. "Each of you gets five minutes," came a voice, which carried with it an air of overwhelming generosity.
What does one ask in five minutes to someone who redefined Indian film music and the world's perception of it? That too to a man who has such a huge body of work to his credit and seems so frightfully reticent? But the mild-mannered Rahman allayed all apprehensions and graciously said even after my five minutes were up: "Go on." In fact, he even offered me a second chance a precious 10 minutes!
A trailblazer

Rahman is truly amazing for the manner in which he stormed into the Indian film music scene even before establishing his regional credentials. With his debut film Roja in 1991, he became a national phenomenon, bagging the Rajkamal for it. Rahman acknowledged that it was all part of a conscious design. "I wasn't too happy with the I-don't-want-to-listen-to-it attitude of our youngsters towards film music. Why can't we get our guys to listen to our own music rather than to Michael Jackson? I didn't want us to lose the market to the West. The music had to be cool, it had to be rooted, and yet had to branch out. It was like the wild imagination of a child... but it worked... It did travel beyond Chennai and attract people," explained the gifted composer.
Having a studio of his own has helped him in a big way. He has had the freedom of working on his tunes day and night, for days, months and years (he worked almost for a year on the Rangeela song and worked for a good six months on Roja's "Tamizha Tamizha"), until he was fully satisfied with it. " I have rubbed many a producer the wrong way by disturbing the schedule, but it has paid off."
In the case of his blockbuster album Vande Mataram too, he was fully aware of what he was doing. If it changed the image of India from a peace-loving country to a nuclear powerhouse, it was intended.
Rahman and his friend Bharat Bala conceived it as a flag-waving, jingoistic declaration, a mantra of every kid in the country. "It had to be unlike the one that has been played on the radio for years. I wanted a sound that would connect me with people and capture a collective energy."
But going by Rahman's style, which has a visual texture to it, his version of "Vande Mataram" doesn't capture the celebration of Indian landscape in Bankim Chandra's poem. "It wasn't intended that way," came the concise reply. With Vande Mataram, Rahman, who gave Indian music a global feel, also re-asserted himself as a gizmo freak. (In fact, he is said to spend most of his money on acquiring new electronic gadgets.) Not that he has made only foot-tapping numbers; he did classical pieces such as "Kanna mucchi yenada" in Natakurinji for Kandukondein Kandukondein and he did sweeping melodies like "Uyire" for Bombay along with songs like "Rukkumani" and "Mukkala Muqabala".
"Somehow, people just put all my melodies on the backburner and remembered me for only rhythm-driven songs. But things have changed since Lagaan. They have woken up to the other aspects in me."
Rahman remembered how on his way to Gulbarga from Hyderabad, he was playing a soft song and the car driver threatened to fall asleep if he didn't play a fast one. But during one of his trips to Germany, an admirer came up to him to say how much he liked the songs in Zubeidaa, a film that failed at the box-office.
"I take all criticism objectively and believe in elevating the tastes of the listener," he maintained.
Back to roots

Nevertheless, to the layman, Rahman has always been someone with a strong Western orientation, unlike Ilaiyaraja who with all his veneration for Baroque music, has strong Oriental roots.
The manner in which Ilaiyaraja rendered Tyagaraja's krithi "Tulasidala" in a western idiom and his current orchestral work Thiruvasagam stands testimony. Rahman too is working on a project called Conference of the Words, a book based on a Sufi tale of self-discovery. This will be turned into an orchestral work and premiered in Birmingham. And like his true self, "I'm going to take a very long time on this."
Despite confessions such as "I feel abnormal when I talk", Rahman loves to connect with people, of course, in a different medium.
Talk of the Airtel ad, tell him it was quintessential Rahman with a good balance of melody and rhythm, and he will tell you that after a two-year stay in London for the Broadway production Bombay Dreams (he accepts that it got "bad reviews"), "there was this desperate need to reconnect. And that's why I agreed to star in it too."

Rawat,

If anyone knows slightest bit of history about Mangal Pandey he would
know the situation and plot to be expected. Okay, so by listening to
Rising you can't validate whether it is entirely appropriate. Then you
might want to revisit Bose, bhagat singh, laagan etc. 

He doesnt have to use instruments of that era to create the "mood"
demanded by the situation. Surely no MD in his right mind today would
go back and use technology of 1857 to come up with a score for the movie!!

Quite contrary to that ARR used more hi-tech effects in Rising. And it
is because of his genius that he can do that and still bring about the
emotions demanded by the director. It could consider multitude of
factors such as culture, locality, era, and most importantly the
placement of the song in the storyline. 

I stopped listening to critics long time ago - I listen to ARR.

If people can not admit the brilliance of Rahman, it is only because
they can not understand it!

Either way, its their loss, not ours :)

Arr at his best.Aa Aah song is a techno marvel song and the mesmerising factor in that song is boss' voice.
As i said before Mayilragai song is a song from planet 9.
What i understand now is that when you are composing original stuff,it takes time unlike others (Eg:u no hj,yu,.)
Hj directly takes arr loops and composes and takes credit.I have a list where the musical pieces are directly lifted from boss' songs.
Ysr ,he directly takes boss' tunes and then says i fav md' are Rd burman,Sd burman.
Fools how long can they cheat themselves and the public.
Arr has rang the death bell for all these copy managers.
hj follows alaipauthe style in all his films irrespective of the theme and ysr ensures that he gives booming sounds keeping all the equalisers at their peak irrespective of the song( thiruda thiruda style).
This is a outcry from a die hard arr fan.Plz apologise if i have offended anybody.
BUT HEY GUYS ISN'T IT THE UNIVERSAL TRUTH.
what do u all say.

Bang on...exactly my thoughts..its almost as though hez singing it for
tamil fans..letting them all know hez for tamil first..i wanted to
write a mail conveying the same thoughts..guess you beat me to it..

the movie AH AAH, but the lyrics of that song looks as if that it is 
written to showcase the comeback of ARR. Phrases like "Aadiaan 
Tamilian, Naan ungal Nanban", "Neegal ellamal naan engu ellai" and 
full of Charanam showcases the fact.
After a long time we have got a ARR song which makes us to get up 
early in the morning especially to hear the song that too repeatedly.
In the 24hr of the audio release i have heard "Anbe Aaruyire" 50 times.
I can't be alone without hearing that song.

So far I heard "Ah Ahh" five times.. (Non Stop). I agree that it is 
quiet different from him earlier albums. The beats are quiet different 
and good.

Melody is there but not mesmerizing. Also feel that most of the songs 
are remix of some old songs. I STRONGLY feel that it has bits and 
pieces of old movie songs.

IMO, Not a GREAT album. "Varugirai" song is only one that interested me 
somewhat. Started out great.. at charanam it lost its groove.
