[arr] FIR - Bangalore Concert
Hi Folks, Here is the First Information Report on the Bangalore Concert - I could not resist myself here in the US, while my family and friends were in the concert. I heard Chaiya Chaiya LIVE over the phone for a few minutes.My sistermentioned that ARR was great as usual in the concert. The concert started at around 8:15, instead of 6 pm due to rains. It was most shocking to know that there were very less crowd(about 25% of the expected turn out). Even at 7:30, the Rs.3000 stalls were empty almost...(might be the concert was scheduled with out proper planning, weather forecasting, etc.,) People from Rs. 1500 stalls had to jump the barricade and move to Rs.1 stalls to fill up the front. Of course the stallsbehind (Rs. 500 and 1000) were almost full. Concert started with FanaARR blasting out. Later continued with all new and old hits. Madhushree gave Hum Hai is Phal Yehan from Kisna and Kabi Neem Neem from Yuvathatz when Boss did his bit and she started dancing on stage. Sukhwinder Singh did all the hit nos. including WATER, for the first time in the concert...a gift to Bangaloreans. Hariharan, Blazee, Kailash Keer, Sadhana Sargam did a fantastic job. Another attraction was Chitra singing Kehana Hai Kya (Bombay) in Kannada...penned by PB Srinivas (a noted Kannada singer. Badshah SPB was not there in the concert and so as Udit Narayan. There was also a few nos. from Bombay DreamsIshq Bina in English, etc., Shivamani could do a little bit solo. Looks like the show was rushed thro' bcoz of rains. Atleast we have to thank the rain god that until the last song there was no rains. ARR mentioned that he learnt 2 things from the concert - (1) Never do any concerts in this season (Ramzan) and (2). How much the BLR folks love him.bcoz most of themwatched the showdrenched. He called it a Wet Wet Wet concert. hi guyz, Ystrday i was listening to Sir ARR's concert on Sahara One. There was a song sung by Sir ARR and Sukhwinder Singh, which was something like Sona Sona Maahi Sona Sona Sona mera maahi Sona, and then something like Rang de Rang de. But towards early evening it looked bright again. All was well, Bangaloreans thought, and unsurprisingly, all roads did lead to Palace Grounds. It was six, an hour before the much-awaited A.R. Rahman concert by India Classic Arts. The skies opened up and truly, like the adage, it never rains, it pours and there was a downpour. The props on the stage gave way and the 3D gadget conked out, but the 25,000-odd crowd would not move. Every two minutes, young and old, screamed: We want Rahman. Rahman made a two-second dramatic appearance with a huge umbrella and announced: These showers are godsend. Give me one hour and I promise you, it will be the best performance so far. And when the performance did begin at 9 p.m., there was much ecstasy, on stage and off stage. The audience could barely sit in their chairs and the singers could not stop smiling and swaying. Rahman barely put his finger on the synthesiser and they knew what song was coming. The opening song was the energetic number from Yuva which Rahman himself performed with his 10-member chorus and elaborate live orchestra. Percussion whiz Sivamani had an elaborate rhythm apparatus. Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam sang quite a few numbers together including the evergreen Roja Janeman from Roja. Shankar Mahadevan, Blazee and Rahman belted out Hamma Hamma, while Kailash Kher stole hearts with his Mangal Mangal. Jhanan Jhanan, a duet by Sukhwinder and Sadhana, from the yet to be released Water was outstanding. The surprise was a Kannada translation by P.B. Sreenivos of the lovely Bombay number Kannaleye into Kannada, Oh Iniyane. Chitra, as usual, gave an impeccable rendition with Rahman joining her for the interludes, with his beautiful uncultivated nuances. Bangalore singer Badri Prasad rocked with Mukkala Mukabala. They sang and sang, but the audience was left craving for more. It was a concert to remember for many years to come. We neglect our cities at our peril. Hi Raaja R these wo dialogues juz like the swades bgm? And also, i only had no problems dlding the swades bgm where after i get into the page, a few secs later it promptes for me to save and it dlded nicely. But for the rest of all other links, incl the one in ur email - it doesnt seem to have any reaction except for one - the bar right below where u see the globe with the word Internet - on the left side usually we will be able to see the duration of the page that is opening ? - like bars coming up one by one? Once the page is done it shows the word Done. This is what happens when i click free dld. Nothing happens except that the bar showing dlding status repeatedly. Any clue from you? thanks. City sways to Rahmans beats Deccan Herald The weather failed to dampen the spirit of the audience who cheered on as top singers belted out popular numbers. A persistent downpour and a near two-hour wait couldnt water down the Bangalorean spirit as fans clung on to hope, screams intact, before Allah Rakha Rahman did the opening act of his super-hyped concert at Palace Grounds on Saturday. In sober white, and sans the customary long locks, Rahman opened with Yuvas groovy discotheque track Fanaa. Hariharan and Sadhna Sargam followed it up with Indians Telephone mani pol. While Shankar Mahadevan was in top form in Enna solla pokiraai, Kailash Kher did an inspired turn with Mangal Mangal. Sukhwinder and Sargam rendered Chanan chanan from the unreleased Water, leaving the audience confused to start with, only to get them hooked by the time the number reached its high-pitched end. Chitras Kannada version of Kannaalane... from Bombay had the cheers coming in, followed by the redoubtable Alka Yagnik giving a fine rendition of Taal se taal mila. Rahman himself came back for the up-tempo Baar baar from Lagaan. All the while, the crowds kept calling for their own favourites. Blaaze did a rap turn with Baba and Sukhwinders Chinnamma chilakamma from Meenaxi was distinctly cheered at. After Shivamani touched up his drums for some scintillating beats in an interlude, Rahman and co. returned with relatively sombre beats. An unreleased UN anthem for campaign against poverty was followed by the Bombay theme and a track from Bombay Dreams. But the tone was soon up again with Mukkala muqabla, Ghanan ghanan and Mustafa Mustafa. Secrets of Success from Boys and Chaiya chaiya from Dil Se got dancers swaying on the post-rain slush. By the time it was over with a rendition of Vande Mataram, the three-hour show had given the thronging, persevering crowd enough to cheer about. While all the singers kept raving about the crowds, Rahman thanked them from the bottom of his heart and swore that this was the kind of support that kept him going. There was no Chanda suraj, there was no Thiruda Thiruda, Muthalvan or Muthu. But some obvious misses apart, this was music well played. We neglect our cities at our peril. After listening to Water one would definetely place Rahman in the top 20 New Age composers of the world currently for simply the range of genres he has attempted and each of them reproduced almost faithfully and true to the genre.. Bailamore from Kadhal Virus might have sounded like crap to some but it was perfect techno trance he did. Jazz in Vaan Nila from Kadhal Virus Hip Hop, Pop, Rap, Rock, Fusion. From all those complex orchestrations to minimal music, classical melodies like Piya Ho. Able to perfectly transport us to the 60's with songs like Poo Kodiyin Punnagai from Iruvar... to the Lands of the silk route where many cultures fused... crazy songs for crazy movies like Paarthale Paravasam..he's simply amazing..he delivers music that perfectly suits the mood of the movie and the scene. I salute Rahman sir..I thank God infinitely for always blessing him to be a humble, good and God fearing human being.. Check the image below http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/9074/ebd9938ze.jpg It is the CD Cover of a newly released malayalam music album comprising of hit muslim songs in the 60s and 70s. For those who dont know malayalam, the text which is underlined in red color is A R Rahman. Note the yellow color used to highlight A R Rahman in the white colored text. Wonder what is the connection between ARR and this album? Well...what the cover really says is This album features 15 super songs in A R Rahman style. See the marketing strategy used here. I dont think this is a crime as they didnt try to market it as an original ARR composition. Instead they merely used his name to catch the attention of fellow music buffs. For most of us it has been a back-breaking 2 days, but the effort was worth every bit of it, not just for the fantabulous concert which Rahman being uncharacteristically expressive not just in speech but also in action, doing things like punching the air, and slinging a keyboard over his shoulder and walking around the stage playing it, but also for the big big moment when ARR came over to meet the group. All it took was one request for him to come down and declare I am not leaving this place till everyone of you gets a chance (to take a photograph with him). [arr] The beginning...
It rains 9 months a year in Bangalore but very rarely like it did yesterday. It had been raining consistently but for brief periods for the past week till rains let up on Wednesday and Thursday sending our hopes soaring. The rains came back again on Friday during the rehearsal but were around for a very brief time and didn't cause any damage. Saturday morning was sultry pointing to some rain towards the evening. We were hoping that it would be as brief as it was on Friday . By 4 30, the crowds were allowed inside the grounds and by 5 inside the seating enclosure. No rain till then but we were still keeping our fingers crossed. By 5 30 we felt the first drops and the dismay was writ large on our faces. But the crowd was not deterred. They had come prepared with umbrellas and continued to stream in. By 6 it was raining fairly hard but the crowd stayed put. Around 6 30 things took a turn for the worse and the it began raining cats and dogs. The crowd then scrambled to the food court tents for shelter. Shortly thereafter, the backdrop of the stage collapsed threatening to take the stage down with it, thankfully it held. Many people by then feared that the concert would be cancelled or rescheduled and some began leaving. The MC made an announcement around 7 30 that the show would go on. The crowd then began chanting We want Rahman... We want Rahman. Then Sivamani came on stage and performed solo to keep the crowd engaged. Around 8 PM, the boss made an appearance on stage dressed in a sky blue turtle neck T-shirt and the whole arena erupted into a loud cheer. He said This is the holy month of Ramadan and the showers are a blessing from God. Give us a few minutes to set up the stage and the show will go on. The crowd again went up in a cheer. One of us overheard H Sridhar remarking, Why is he saying this! Its not safe to do a concert now. But ARR was resolute. The next hour was spent with the MC and some artistes keeping the crowd engaged. A crowd of 25000-3 braved the pouring rain and continued to wait. The crowd was extremely well-behaved, patient and tolerant without the slightest bit of booing at the delay or during the concert. By then, because of people moving in all directions to find temporary shelter from the rain, all distinction between the various ticketing enclosures had been breached and it was a free for all seating. A few minutes before 9 PM the rain eased. The stage had been made functional by then. We were two hours behind schedule. The lights went on, the artistes took their places on the stage and the boss burst on to stage with a full throated rendition of Fanaah mixed up with punches and kicks in the air. hi, Guys I hav been saying this all along.ARR not jus deserves a place in the top 20's but he is the NO1 composer the world has ever seen. Consider the other composers in the list.They were fantastic no doubt but in their own sphere be it musicals or conducting orchestras at Broadway.So to put it in a nutshell they come under the "English Musical Sphere" for instance. Also consider the fellow who ranked ARR.He has seen jus one face of ARR his ie his "PENCHANT FOR COMPOSING MUSICALS". Now consider these facts: 1. ARR is the only fellow in the list "WHO HAS BRIDGED THE LANGUAGE BARRIER" as he says music has no language. 2. He has made Indians listen 2 Broadway musicals and made the English Audience take note of the power and substance of INDIAN MUSIC combined with technological advancements.I don't feel this has happened the otherway round with the other composers in the list. Whennoted actor Kamal Hasan was asked , " If u were born in America u would hav won 2 , 3 Oscars by now, he said that the real skill lies in taking the opponent on, in his own battleground and that one could prove oneself from where they are and need not complain about own place. In my opinion its ARR who has done it hands down.He has faced different situations and has excelled in each one of them. So in the revised list ARR is the No.1 composer considering all his feats.
