As a true fans, pls we all come up n do something so that our boss's godfather rockz the music world n stay at no. 1 forever unbeated by others. teach a lesson to HJ, Yuvan n others saying that ARR is droping down n became 2nd after HJ as there are people who are claiming that. Hi All, Am throughly enjoying godfather album and after 20 hearings, i couldn't stop. I will always backup rahman as he doesn't care about experimentation. Afterall, only bcoz of his style, he is what he is today. coming to the point, Can vijay iyer or gops r anybody for that matter clarify me, who decides the order of songs in an album, is it rahman or the director or the recording company. bcoz i noticed that they make sure that the first last song is always catchy and the 2nd songs is melody. Big numbers, little appeal Dazzling dancing in Bombay Dreams isn't enough to sell it. By Daryl H. Miller, Times Staff Writer LONG gone are the days when American movies contained Busby Berkeley's human kaleidoscopes or Fred and Ginger's swirling forms, but big song-and-dance numbers live on in India, where they are a vital part of many popular films. That pulse-pumping tradition is meant to propel Bombay Dreams, a stage musical jammed with numbers by the respected Indian film composer A.R. Rahman. The versions of the show attempted in London, New York and now on tour, however, haven't been able to establish what seems an otherwise inevitable connection between Indian films and Western stage musicals. If and when the right project comes along, the infusion of energy from the East could be electrifying. In the meantime, we must make do with the production that is launching its North American tour at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. A pet project of Andrew Lloyd Webber's, Bombay Dreams emerged from the British impresario's fascination with Rahman's music. Tonally and rhythmically complex, that music fuses Indian classical music and Western pop, with salsa, jazz and other styles percolating among the techno drum beats and traditional Indian percussion. The most infectious numbers are lifted from film scores: the Top 40- ready Shakalaka Baby and the swaying, propulsive Chaiyya Chaiyya. But Rahman wrote mostly original material for the stage musical, on which Lloyd Webber retains a co-credit for coming up with the idea. The plot, apparently meant to playfully emulate many of the movies that emerge from Hollywood's Bombay counterpart, is a rehash of long- established plot devices, intended as mere pretext for spectacle. So the script by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan presents the story of Akaash (Sachin Bhatt), a young man from Bombay's slums who dreams of fame in the movies. He is loved, of course, by a neighborhood girl, the twist here being that the girl is a eunuch named Sweetie (Aneesh Sheth). Akaash falls in love, though, with a glamorous woman from the outside world, here the aspiring filmmaker Priya (Reshma Shetty). Of course, he gets his big chance. The show, which ran for two years in London, was reworked for its Broadway presentation, which lasted just eight months. It has been further redone here, with some songs and scenes having been moved to new places. As theatergoers take their seats, movie excerpts of Rahman's songs, including Shakalaka Baby, play on a big screen, showing us how the numbers should be done. And when the show begins, this new staging by director Baayork Lee and choreographer Lisa Stevens works best when the music is thumping. The big numbers dazzle with their unison moves, performed en masse side-to-side head pops, windmilling arms and bent-kneed leg pumps. When the movement stops, however, the show dies. The cast, though young and attractive, has neither the charisma nor the chops to sell this thin material on dazzle alone. Complicating matters, the production, in its first tour stop, is still in shakedown mode, with numerous awkwardnesses and glitches occurring during Tuesday's opening. Then too, there are sequences that probably ought to be rethought. Shakalaka Baby incorporates what is often referred to as a wet sari scene, in which dancers are drenched with water. The geyser-producing contraption used here all but drowns the cast and necessitates long minutes of cleanup by a small army of mop-pushers, distracting from the dialogue scene that follows. IMHO there are lot of songs which follows either of Jazz or Blues concepts. My favorite one would be polyrhythms, ie. using multiple independent rhythms. For e.g. Oh Maria from Kadhalar Dhinam. There are so many small rhythmic nuances going on in that song and I am willing to take a bet that 50% of listeners wouldn't even notice those subtleties. The other would be 12 bar chord progressions, which are typical in Blues. Sarrazin offered a fascinating look at the history of Hindi film music with its penchant for absorbing international influences and its unwritten rules. Each example was illuminated with a charming snippet of video, from films such as Shree 420, Sholay and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. "There are certain 'codes' - iconic sound images - that recur in Indian film music," she said. "The timbre of the Indian female voice is quite prominent, you hear large orchestras and soaring violins, and a wall of sound ... rising violins are a code for a love
song." Rahman turned it all upside down, she explained. "The first thing he did was to take the orchestral introduction and completely get rid of it." Cueing a scene from the Tamil film Gentleman (Rahman's Tamil compositions were not overlooked during the evening), she demonstrated how Rahman brought in one instrument at a time, creating musical tension. To cheers and shouts from the audience, Sarrazin moved on to musical scenes from Rahman's scores that have become icons themselves: Mani Ratnam's Roja (the witty "Rukmani Rukmani"), Bombay ("Tu Hi Re"), the Hindi version of Yuva and Dil Se ("Chhaiyya Chhaiyya"); Tehzeeb and Saathiya. "He often puts two incongruous styles together that somehow seem to work," Sarrazin observed, with a clip from Lagaan's English/Hindi song "O Re Chori" and Sushmita Sen's jittery "Shakalaka Baby" (Nayak), which was
one of his hit songs reworked to great effect in "Bombay Dreams." As much as his fans and fellow artists love his music, Rahman is notorious for taking his time on each project. "I have a nice relationship with all directors, but I drive the producers crazy," he joked. "Mani [Ratnam] tells me the story that he told me for Roja, 'I need five songs, and I need them yesterday.' I was gone for threemonths." Working with lyricists, too, has its quirks. "Sometimes Gulzar-sahib or Javed-sahib will give me just a title. Other times, they want the tune first, then they'll give the lyrics." One of the reasons Roja was such a departure from the style of music at the time was the way it was recorded, explained Rahman. "At the time, there were these huge recording halls, with 50 violins," he said. "But I was doing commercials in my own studio. When Mani
wanted me to do the music, I said, 'Let's do it at my place.' "I called my musician friends to come for the session, but at the last minute they all ditched me! I think they had all been offered more money somewhere that day," he said, laughing along with the audience. "But my mother said, 'God will provide.' I ended up recording [the instrumental version of ]'Choti Si Asha' by myself, on a keyboard and sequencer. I thought I'd need to bring in 50 violins, but Mani said 'No, just be yourself. Follow your instincts.'" Since he got his start writing ad jingles, wasn't it intimidating to take on the soundtrack to an entire three-hour film, asked Sarrazin. "I was terrified in the beginning," replied Rahman. "But then I learned that if I could write a piece of music that was 30 seconds long, then all I'd have to do is repeat it!" He's not
