Yes, unfortunately, this is a not the best start. "And though the musical score, by the Indian film composer AR Rahman, the Finnish group Värttinä ... it doesn't, at least on first hearing, seem to offer any memorable take-home numbers." We should keep in mind that these folks have probably never heard ARR's work, and so they don't know what we do.. that his music grows with time. Dats true KKHH cant beat Dil Se. KKHH became popular because the movie was more successful than Dil Se. the same as with RDB now... And furthermore many people out there cant appreciate the difference between other medicore MDs and ARR. In fact they dont know the difference at all. These make up much of Indian music listerners.To them a popular song (no matter how crappy compared to ARR standard) is a GOOD SONG! There are few "critics" out there who can differentiate. Of course the Reviewers in the media world know the difference. As much as I love ARR's music, I hate him for making it popular for MDs to use North Indian singers :) ARR's ruined a few good songs by using singers with bad Tamil. For example: Nenjam Ellam (AE)- Adnan Sami Sandai Kozhi (AE)- Madhushree Mayilirage (Aa Aah)- Madhushree The last two are unlistenable for me now. The tune and orchestrations are good, but Madhushree ruined those songs. Nenjam Ellam is redeemed somewhat by Sujatha's good singing. Udit Narayan is the worst. And unfortunately has been used quite often in TFM. He has already worked on flicks like Johnny and Kutumba Shankar. Scripting the story himself, Pawan plans to bring P C Sriram behind the camera and A R Rahman to score the music. i agree with all who support critiscism of ARR songs.i love ARR songs that doesnt mean i love his each & every composition.today we love him & his music because he didnt give any chance for us to criticize his music for several years.most of us are just listeners .we dont have a knowledge of music but we still judge music & singers .when we listen to a song its just the overall effect of song that matters for a generic listener & its him who decides quality of a song.i never listen to ghazals but that doesnt mean they are bad.its just that i find them boring.so i think we can openly discuss such topics .its just that we are trying to match our opinions with others.polls are meant for same thing.we all here love his music ,wait breathlessly for every release of his albums,amaze everytime whenwe listen to his music.also these songs are outcome of story,time available,director ,stress ,environment,health etc.so its natural for everyMD to give bad songs sometimes.ARR does it the least infact very very few .i think they are in single digit number.i think vidyasagar is best example for how all these things matter.He is a telugu person yet to get recognition here in A.P after all this long carrer but hes a big MD in tamil industry.i thought he will get that in his latest in telugu film Bangaram .but thats below average .so producing a score that satisfies listeners almost everytime is only done by ARR. i think the best by ARR is ..Bombay theme,songs from roja ,padmavyuham,lukka chuppi & many moreworst is markendeya(NANI),rang dole(Mr.Romeo),few in Gangmaster & Super police. Tolkien, the consummate master of detail in creating the universe of The Lord of the Rings, worked at finding a sung voice for his characters as well.As medieval Northern Europeans regaled themselves around a roaring fire with songs, so do the inhabitants of Middle-earth.They even play instruments. There are violins, harps and woodwinds for the dwarves. There's even a fiddle-playing cat in "Frodo's Song at Bree."Howard Shore did a masterful job of integrating Tolkien's intentions when he composed the soundtrack for Peter Jackson's films, striking a balance between Hollywood's needs for epic scale and the intimacy of the story's personal struggles.Whether or not Jackson's movies did justice to the actual style of music Tolkien had in mind for Gondor or the Shire, it worked for audiences in movie theatres.But what about the new music-filled theatrical production, which must meet a different set of demands?Stage music has to convey character, mood and dialogue in a short space of time — while also taking into account the different vocal abilities of each actor.As Lord of the Rings orchestrator and musical supervisor Christopher Nightingale has pointed out in numerous interviews, the musical's creative team wanted to ensure a sound and feel of authenticity in the final result.Enter Värttinä (pronounced VAR-tin), one of the most well-known European roots music groups in North America.Nightingale and lyricist Shaun McKenna sat down to listen to dozens of different performers and groups before they found the sound and feel they were looking for. For Toronto's world premiere of the Lord of the Rings stage musical, this veteran Finnish band offered the best promise of embodying Middle-earth music.Together with Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman, Värttinä (which means "spindle" in Finnish) has been part of a long and arduous collaboration for the show. Besides satisfying Middle-earth purists, the music also has to appeal to the ears of pop- and rock-loving visitors to a Western big-city theatre."It started more than three years ago," says Janne Lappalainen, one of Värttinä's founding members. "Chris Nightingale was going through different kinds of world music and he came up with our album Miero. There was one particular track he felt had some special quality to it."Lappalainen recounts how Nightingale sent the group an email asking if it would be interested in working on a musical. "We had no idea about the size of the whole production."He says the band members, who were about to record a new album, were open to the idea. Nightingale flew out to Finland to see Värttinä perform, "and that's when it all started."In retrospect, Värttinä appears to have been a natural choice.The group has been around in one form or another for a bit more than 20 years. Its signature style starts with centuries-old folk songs from the Finnish region of Karelia, which shares a border with northwestern Russia, and transforms them into a kinetic mix of sound and rhythm.The vocals are performed by three women in a hard-edged style that recalls the Bulgarian voices that became popular a decade-and-a-half ago. The accompaniment is all-acoustic, adopting pop and rock influences with percussion, saxophone, bouzouki, guitar, bass, fiddle and accordion in ever-shifting combinations.The group's past compositions cover a wide spectrum of moods. Their most recent work is best described as a multi-layered tapestry of repeating melodic fragments with a complex rhythmic underpinning.It's a sound with an immediate, visceral appeal, much like the best Celtic music (or early Ashley MacIsaac, for that matter).A reviewer on the Pitchfork music website described the sound on the earlier album Iki as "party music of Nordic war gods."London's Daily Telegraph describes Värttinä this way, referring to Miero:"Backed by swirling fiddles and accordions and remorseless pounding drums, their exultant, semi-polyphonic singing is at once strident and alluring in a way that would make them perfect adolescent fantasy material if they didn't happen to be foreign and folk ..."By "adolescent fantasy material," the Telegraph's writer is referring to Mari Kaasinen, Johanna Virtanen and Susan Aho, the three singers. Will Lord of the Rings, Opening March 23, Get to Be a Hobbit With Audiences? By Kenneth Jones 23 Mar 2006 he Lord of the Rings, the J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired stage spectacle created by an international team of artists, opens in its Toronto world premiere March 23 at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Like the massive three-part fantasy novel and film versions that came before it, the music-infused, three-act production with a running time of more than three hours is nothing if not ambitious. Director Matthew Warchus, who co-adapted the novel (with Shaun McKenna) for the stage, is in charge of the $27 million (Canadian) production, which boasts 70 actors (which includes 49 plus a battery of support people) in a 2,000-seat venue. Previews began Feb. 4. If The Lord of the Rings is a hit with critics and audiences, international productions are expected to sprout (first in London in 2007 and then Europe, but not in the U.S. until 2008), but first things first: Will it become a theatregoing hobbit er, habit in Toronto? The opening follows more than two years of design, script and music pre-production. Rehearsals began in October 2005. The cast includes experienced classical actors working alongside acrobats, stilt-walkers and singers. The troupe is largely Canadian, with others hailing from the United Kingdom, Australia and United States. By the first preview $15.5 million (Canadian) had been generated at the box office, producer Kevin Wallace said. He hoped to be "knocking on the door of $20 million" by the opening night. At press time, Playbill.com could not discover if the goal had been met. Producers Wallace and Saul Zaentz, in association with David & Ed Mirvish and Michael Kohl are behind the open-ended-run that employs hundreds of artists, technicians and support staffers. With a score penned by A.R. Rahman, the Finnish band Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale (with lyrics by McKenna and Warchus), is The Lord of the Rings a musical? "The books are absolutely full of characters who sing to express themselves," producer Wallace said, "but let's stick with calling it 'a theatrical event.' When the characters draw on music to express themselves, they draw on songs which are ancient to their culture or their species." There is no big "I Want" song, as there usually is in traditional American musical theatre. But music still pours out of the production. The writing credits, much like a musical, also include listings for "book and lyrics" (by McKenna and Warchus). Calling the show a "musical" might be in the eye or ear of the theatregoer. This earthbound and metaphoric image, designed by Rob Howell, gives the world premiere theatrical epic, The Lord of the Rings its focus. Just as in the titular fantasy-novel trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, a natural world be it forest, shire, mountain, swamp or volcano becomes a playing area for characters who are magnetically pulled toward good and/or evil. The production doesn't include members of the cast rushing out into the auditorium during action, but the scenic elements do spill out over the proscenium and onto the ceiling of the theatre. "It creeps out, this root system," producer Kevin Wallace told Playbill.com in the days leading up to the Feb. 4 first preview, "over the boxes of theatre and out toward the circle and second balcony. That is the environment within which the story is told". Lighting designer Paul Pyant is lighting it out to the extremities of that environment, as well, Wallace said. "The focus of the story is in this fabulous 45-foot diameter, huge tree trunk, which is the conceit of the stage design, and which has within it, the revolves and the lifts which take us from one location to another," Wallace explained. There wasn't a major tearing-out of rows of the Princess of Wales' 2,000 seats to accommodate the action, Wallace said, although Rick Fox, the conductor of the 18-musician orchestra, will lead the band from what used to be row AA. I agree..some of the best songs of ARR could have been enhanced by better voices 1) Minsaara Kanna (Padayappa) - Instead of Srinivas,..Hariharan could have sung that. 2) Mudhal murai killi paarthaen (Sangamam) - Instead of Srinivas, Singer like Jayachandran could have sung it more gracefully. This is NOT to criticize anyone..it was just my view.. We know ARR is the best to choose singers and also ... Srinivas has given the best numbers like Azhage sugama.. (I like lots of Srinivas's songs) Its just that for these two songs..the voices could have been much better.
