Ottagathai copied from Kuyiline is a very popular allegation in

convinced about the 'copy' allegation, though the first line of
Ottagathai does have some similarity to Kuyiline.

@ I'm fully aware of how much buzz a post of Rahman's inspirations
may generate, not adding the hate mail that I may eventually end up

song, 'Eddem Ante Teddam Antav', from the album 'Chik pak chik bam',
with music by Raj Koti, seems to be the source of inspiration for
Rahman's superhit Gentleman song, 'Ottakatha Kattikko'. The first 2
lines' flow, that is, nothing more. And, considerably spruced up in
Rahman style, of course! I recall reading Rahman's apprenticeship as
an arranger for other composers like Ilayaraja, Ousepachan and Raj
Koti, so a connection cannot be ruled out as a coincidence. Plus,
I'm not getting into a guessing game which points to Rahman
composing this tune originally for Raj Koti since that's merely a
conjecture! Thanks to Amith Chandran and Bhagavathi Mohan for the
info! The full Telugu song is available in CoolToad, here.

[arr] Re: ARR copied Telugu pop song for Ottagathai Kattikko?

2007-09-11 Thread Vinod Raju

Karthik/Sarathy and others,

I, as most Keralites, have lived with this allegation of Ottagathai-
Kuyiline connection, ever since Gentleman hit the stores. It does
sound similar in the opening lines from ottagathai to Pottukkaari,
but I really cant call this a copy like the enormous songs listed in
Karthik's site are (same applies to the Telugu song connection too).

And if you still call this a copy, then that opens a Pandora's box,
and 1000s of songs by every MD in India also would have to find a
place in itwofs. (A certain Tamil MD who came as a lightning should
find all his songs listed in itwofs against another ARR song, if thats
the case) ;-)

Anyway, What goes into itwofs or not is completely Karthik's
discretion, and I dont think anybody has any right to say anything or
question Karthik on that.

Also, Telugu version of Gentleman released long time back
and Kontegadni Kattuko was a smash hit in AP as in other parts of
India too. I just cant understand how nobody would miss this copy
all these years. (especially since the Telugu album is said to be a
super hit album of early 90s - it sold 8 lakh cassettes as per a
website. Probably more than Gentleman sold in AP. So, no obscure song
this!)

This also reminds me of another old allegation that Varayo Thozhi /
Kehne ko Dadi resembling O mere Sona Re.
ARR himself had answered this in his Filmfare interview in Aug 99.
(pasting it below)

Q: Have you ever lifted a tune?
ARR: Not intentionally. But there was some strings of melody in a
song of Jeans which I was told sounded much like Mere sona re (Teesri
Manzil). I don't know how it happened,it was inadvertent...maybe
R.D.Burman's tune was lingering somewhere at the back of my mind.

And to end this rather large mail, please allow me to quote what
Karthik himself posted in Dec 05 in this very same group.

And ultimately, its only your belief that, as a person, Rahman is
honest, that is being questioned.

And that should explain the reaction and angst of Sarathy and the
1000s of other silent members of this group.

Hope we can end this topic and move on to discuss better things in
this group.
Any idea when ATM is releasing? Anybody? :-)

Thanks and regards,
Vinod

[arr] My view on Elizabeth's soundtrack

2007-09-11 Thread Chord
I think it's nice that Rahman is co-composing a hollywood soundtrack
with a fine director. But, frankly, I'm not overly excited about it.
This is not Rahman's baby as he is sharing the music credits. The
soundtrack itself is going to be highly hollywoodish with lots of
western symphony with probably little or no oriental sounds or
styles. I generally don't listen to those types of soundtracks,
unless they are truly exceptional. And if the soundtrack
is bombastic as reported, that's something I'm not a fan of. I
generally don't like loud symphonies with lots of brass and pompous
sounds.

But, in fairness, I will wait to hear the soundtrack before judging
completely. What I would really like to hear from Rahman is a
soundtrack on the lines of Fire, Water, Provoked, WOHE where there is
ample opportunity for multi-ethnic instrumentation and percussion,
haunting soundscapes, and eloquent use of choirs and delicate
ornamentation. Remember Rahman's Earth Theme from 1947 Earth? This
is the type of music I want to hear from him, not necessary that he
has to repeat himself.

.

[arr] I vote for having commercial access to Rahman's BGM scores

2007-09-11 Thread Chord
We all know how briliant Rahman's BGM scores for various films have
been, from Roja, to Dil Se to Lagaan, to Swades, to RDB, and many more
from both North and South. Someday, somebody close to Rahman or
Rahman himself should make available his entire BGM collection. This
idea was brought up by a good friend who is in this group and I think
it deserves attention. How this could be done, I'm not sure. The
concern is about not having a market for this. I think there are a
lot of music afficionados and enough Rahman fans out there who would
be very interested in owning CD quality copies of Rahman's BGM
collection.

So far, there have been some very crafty and hard working people in
this group who have generously made available tracks from DVDs without
dialogues. To those who have been a part of this, thank you from my
heart. I cannot tell you how much I relish listening to the BGM
tracks of Swades, especially. Imagine if every single Rahman BGM
score could be released in a professional manner. What a goldmine!

Would like a fruitful discussion on this, because this is something I
feel all Rahman fans would be interested in.

[arr] I don't understand why LOTR soundtrack is not out

2007-09-11 Thread Chord
So much has been spoken about the LOTR soundtrack, but till today, it
is not available commercially. Why? What is the reason? We had
Bombay Dreams soundtrack as soon as the musical hit the stage, so why
not LOTR? I know that the play has had some major revisions, so
perhaps this is the reason? This is so frustrating for me as a Rahman
fan. Something that's so widely advertised and mentioned, and yet,
not one single word about its release. Will we ever get to hear it?
Come on, would someone who is close to Rahman please clarify this?
Aren't others here as eager as me to hear this?

[arr] Re: Kehna hi kya -- Sheer magic

2007-09-11 Thread Chord
This is a true classic. And I like how you mentioned about minimalist
instrumentation. Minimalist, yet powerful and clean. Every sound,
every track is clear and distinct without going too heavy with
orchestration and loudness. I think this is another good example of
the type of sound that some people are missing from Rahman these
days. Brilliant melody in this one and very well picturized. I'm
tired of Rahman's songs being botched up on screen lately.

guitar, harmonium, tabla + chorus claps, Then 2 out of the world

sung fetches an accolade to the composition. A kind not ever tried
earlier or later. This song is a treat to watch. The innocence,
passion, the feel all mixed so well. Did AR get a national award for
 this movie???
One thing observed just before the interlude when AR sings the alap
it
ends with another voice, wondering who it might be? MG srikumar or
 Murtaza khan? any guess???

[arr] ARR Music Database at instrument level

2007-09-11 Thread ajay.ambole
How about creating a database of all of ARR's music at instrument
level ? I don't think we have that. A table containing all the songs
and instruments used in them.
For Example, this table could have columns such as Male voice, Female
voice, Harmony, Synth, guitar, flute, drums, trumpet, sax ... so on and
so forth. It's a huge task but I think it could be done.
We can use some online docs such as google docs where everybody can go
and update it.
Any ideas, comments ?

bcuz you pple did not like that pointing out even i quoted abt a builders

this situation now...? who has to be advised now ? if there is something not
wrong abt a song mean why that song had to be dragged in pple see its
negative part than +ve part... after all we could talk this only in rehman

Anybody? :-)

Thanks and regards,
Vinod

How will it help? What purpose? I understand the arrangers, composers in this
group would. If you feel strongly - you could start off with 5-10 songs.

My other suggestion is the chords of ARRs songs - to start with the soft
numbers..

[arr] Pritam's Bhool Bhulaiyyaa Inspired by Rahman's Tehzeeb

2007-09-11 Thread vinod sagar

Hi All,

Today I was listening to Hare Krishna Hare Ram song from Priya Darshan's
Bhool Bhullaiyaa..

This song has a striking similarity to Rahman's Khoyi Khoyi Aakhein from
Tehzeeb.. the orchestrisation, effects, rhythm.. almost everything..

Just listen to the song and feel it..

Re: [arr] Re: Initial review of ARR's Elizabeth

2007-09-11 Thread Ramesh R
Please! It's not meant in a positive sense.
huffing and puffing = noisy/annoying
nearly every scene = overuse of music

As Gopal has observed earlier, most of the reviews call the score bombastic.
And that's not a good thing.
It may be ok when your movie is Pirates of the Caribbean- these kind of movies
are solely for the fun factor. But when you have serious cinema with a
historical perpective, you'd ideally want to exercise some restraint.

Anyway the solo violin piece in the main page sounds good. I'll wait till the
score cd releases on Oct 9th to decide for myself.
