Re: [arr] Idea star singer Hisham's JA song link

2008-03-05 Thread Ravi Nair
Something special about this song sung by Hesham Abdul Wahab. When he sang
the song, the movie was not released and I dont think any of the judges new
what the picturisation of the song is like. After finishing the song the
judges commented that it is as if there is a devine presence when the song
was sung and they could feel it. Surprisingly, the picturisation is where
all the singers connect to the almighty while playing the song.

That is the power of the music.

Re: [arr] Dream of Singing for A.R.Rahman comes true !!!! - Bela Shende

2008-03-05 Thread Ravi Nair
A birdy told me that Aishwarya wanted to sing this song and launch her
singing career as well. But it seems ARR refused and the song went to Bela
Shende. God knows how the song would have been if Ash had her way.

On Sun, Mar 2, 2008 at 12:13 PM, Kalimuthu [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My co-worker translated this article for us (Passive) ... Many thanks
 to him

Not a word by word translation.

Bela Shende has sung the Manamohana Kanha Suno Na… song in the movie
Jodha-Akbar which was released quite recently and depicts the story of
Mughal king Akbar (played by Hrithik Roshan) married to a Hindu Rajput lady
by the name of Jodhaa-Bai (played by Aishwarya Rai). *Bela is
acknowledging the fact that it was her dream to have worked with A. R.
Rahman, the music director of the movie and it came to fruition because of
the recommendation by Ashutosh Gowariker, the director of Jodhaa-Akbar.*

The second para details Bela's tutelage in the Kirana gharana of
Hindustani music initially under her mother Mrs. Kusum Shende and also her
grandmother. Bela's elder sister Sawani is an accomplished classical singer
in her own right. Bela however has a natural inclination towards light music
and two sisters complement each other very well. Both Bela and Sawani
visited Seattle in 1998 and performed for Ragamala and the Seattle
Maharashtra Mandal (this is my part of the commentary J). Bela won the Sa
Re Ga Ma Pa contest when Sonu Nigam was the anchor and since then Bela
started her playback singing career. To her credit are albums like Kaisa
yeh jaadu ho gaya…, Doorchya Ranat based on poet Mahanaur, and Sahaj
Tuzi Gaath Pade… based on the famous poet G. D. Madgulkar. She has also
provided playback for films like Ehsaas, Paheli, Uttarayan, etc. She has
sung songs in Marathi, Hindi, and Tamil.

*She then goes on to acknowledge how A. R. Rahman put her at ease with his
recording practice for songs he directs. A. R. was openly appreciative of
Bela's singing of the song after Ashutosh had explained the situation in the
film in detail. The recording started at 11:30 pm and ended at 4:30 am. Bela
didn't get to listen to her own recording until almost 8 months after she
sang it at the time of the music release of the film. By that time there was
a lot of orchestration added to the song and it came out way better than
 expected.*

Bela then talks about the advantages and disadvantages of talent-hunt
shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, etc. She mentions that getting a foot in the door
of the Hindi film singing is no easy task, but staying in the industry is
even more difficult with so much talent around. She says that whoever stays
true to professionalism will survive and succeed in the industry.

The three-hour, 20-minute epic love story - JODHAA AKBAR, which has grossed
about a 100 crore now, has been in the news from the day it released across
the Nation, moreso for its ban in some parts of various states like
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, than for its
star cast, entertainment, banner, etc. It now looks like it will finally
enjoy the fruits after enduring all the bitterness.

Earlier, as per the reports, UTV approached the Supreme Court against the
order of the Uttar Pradesh Government banning exhibition of the film JODHAA
AKBAR. UTV also petitioned that the oral ban order passed by the Haryana and
Uttaranchal Government in certain parts of the said states be lifted.

The Supreme Court has today passed an interim order lifting the ban on the
exhibition of the film JODHAA AKBAR in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and
Uttaranchal, and the matter is placed for further hearing on 14th March
2008.

Meanwhile people can enjoy the spectacular chemistry of Hrithik-Aishwarya's
on-screen love story

Exhibition of the film can be commenced in Uttar Pradesh and affected areas
of Haryana and Uttaranchal immediately.

Dear Rahmaniacs,

With the motivation, that we did something good for ARR Bday in Netrodaya,
Chennai, I would like to invite all Chennai Rahmaniacs, as well as other
members situated wherever you are, to pour in their ideas, thoughts on how
we can join hands in doing something good for the society. I have some
thoughts and want to know what the group thinks abt these

( Remember all these on a weekly basis - just on Sundays )

1. Adopt an orphanage / old age home / in respective cities - Meet every
sunday and spend time with them
2. Organise Blood Camps, Eye camps for rural people
3. Distribute food packets to roadside workers / people who toil in the sun
for their daily livelihood
4. Also discuss abt how to market PFMB Books to schools / book stores for
contributing to ARR Foundation.

Pls keep this thread active and let there be a concensus on this . Then we
can divide ourselves into our respective cities and start individually /
group wise.

I would love members to come out with ideas on this.. and then we will
plunge into action.

P.S. I am very serious on this, and am not mailing this just for namesake.
This has been in my mind since long, and request other Rahmaniacs to share
in their opinions.

( I believe this YG consists of matured fans , whereas orkut is filled with

Rahman likely to be roped in for 'Puli' IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 05,

Pawan Kalyan's forthcoming film is already being discussed with great
enthusiasm among the film fraternity. 'Jalsa' is more or less complete and
the film is due for release in the last week of this month. In all
probability, March 27 could be the release date.

So now, the entire focus has suddenly shifted to 'Puli', which is being
directed by SJ Surya. As per industry grapevine, Pawan Kalyan will be
sporting two looks and the film will go on the floors from April 24.

It is being firmly believed by sources in the industry that A R Rahman could
be composing the music for this film, given his recent hits in Bollywood.

 Shreya Ghoshal (TOI Photo)
From being a winner of a music talent hunt show to the winner of 53rd Fair
One Filmfare Award 2007 for Best Playback Singer (Female), Shreya Ghoshal
has come a long way.

Having picked up two Filmfare awards earlier, the petite singer is ecstatic
after bagging the Best Playback Singer award for Barso Re Megha from Guru
this time.

Ask her whether she expected the award, and Shreya says, I never go
anywhere with any expectation. I had thought that if I get one, it would be
for Yeh Ishq Haye from Jab We Met, as it is a more popular number. I never
thought that I would bag the award for Barso Re...but I am very happy that
the song has got its due. It is a difficult composition and I had worked
hard on it.

The singer, who got her first award for the love ballad picturised on
Aishwarya Bachchan in Devdas, has again bagged the award for a song filmed
on Ash. How does she feel about it? Though I have lent my voice to many
actors, I feel people often associate my voice with Ash, because it suits
her a lot. I think the audience has fallen in love with this combination,
says Shreya with a giggle.

The singing diva is quite pleased with her career graph, and feels that
there is an added dimension to her career now that she is judging a talent
hunt show for children. She doesn't mince her words when she is questioned
about the pros and cons of reality shows.

SMS voting system alone cannot decide the talent of an individual, and
often, genuine contestants are voted out. I feel, the format of these shows
should be modified a bit to make the role of the judges more significant.
But, such shows also give a singer a huge platform to showcase his/her
talent and brings instant fame, says she.

Shreya has another reason to be thrilled. The singer has recently lent her
voice to Kajol in U Me Aur Hum and she is excited about this.
I always wanted to sing for Kajol and Madhuri. Both of them bring life to
their characters and I am a big fan of theirs. For Madhuri, I have just sung
one verse Chalak Chalak and I want to sing a full-fledged song for her. Bus
itna sa khwab hai, says Shreya.

The singer is going great guns on the professional front, but what's
happening on her personal front? For me, getting into a relationship has to
culminate into a marriage. And, at this moment, I am not thinking about
marriage, so no relationships for me. It's only work and I am quite focussed
on it, says she.

why chances are more for their regular bollywood picks. But if you see the

North East areas. Taking 50-50 equation, overall ranking should be both JA
Race should share No.1 position to the chart shown based on regional sales.
However, Promos play vital role in sales specially during audio launch period.
If north east fail in their efforts to the fullest in exhibiting promos

[arr] Singer Sunali Rathod on Mission Ustaad ( Semi ARR )

Singer Sunali Rathod talks about *Mission Ustaad,* music, family and reality
shows.
*
A recap on Mission Ustaad please.*
It was an unusual and musically enriching show. We had to come up with
original compositions every week. I got to experiment with various genres.

AR Rahman and Javed (Akhtar)* saab* said that there wasn't a genre that my
husband Roop and I hadn't attempted. (Smiles) I'll always treasure the
compliment. Roop and I fight all the time. It's been like that for the past
17 years. But we cool down equally fast. A couple has to be prepared to
tackle problems that arise as a result of working together because when
you're doing a show like Mission Ustaad, you tend to take work home -
Sunali Rathod

*Reality shows are known to intrude on personal space. Didn't that bother
you?*
*Mission Ustaad* wasn't a typical reality show. There were no weekly
eliminations, only healthy competition. We didn't have to cater to
unreasonable demands.

*What are you using the prize money for?*
We've already given away the money for charity. It'll be used for women
empowerment. I've always believed that women are stronger than men. I had
decided to work towards the betterment of underprivileged women way before
the competition ended.

*Did working on the show lead to arguments at home as well?
*Roop and I fight all the time. It's been like that for the past 17 years.
But we cool down equally fast. A couple has to be prepared to tackle
problems that arise as a result of working together because when you're
doing a show like* Mission Ustaad,* you tend to take work home.

*Are you game for more reality shows then?
*Sure, if the concept interests me. I will never want to be a part of
something like *Indian Idol* even if they called me on as a judge.

*Why?*
The* Indian Idol* contestants are living on hope. All they think of is
winning the competition. That is not what music is about.

*Given that you were shooting at the Yash Raj Studio, did any playback offer
fall in your lap?
*(Laughs) Unfortunately not. But we're hopeful. Roop has done an album for
the Yash Raj label in the past. After *Mission Ustaad*, we have two albums
in our kitty .

*Despite being a talented couple, why did you'll take the backseat?*
I was never overly ambitious. I'm primarily a homemaker. And as his wife, I
feel that Roop should be No 1 before me. It's a feeling that grows out of
love.

*What's your husband's take on this?*
Roop believes that I haven't got my due and should be more of a go-getter.
But I am happy with him, my daughter Reewa and our home.

*Is Reewa interested in music too?
*She is musically inclined. I'd say music runs in her genes. Most kids would
go crazy listening to their parents sing all day long. But not her.. in
fact, she occasionally joins us. She is a cool girl.

*You sound like a cool mom too.*
(Smiles) I am. I've never forced her to take up music. It was Reewa's
decision entirely to train in carnatic music.
She's a pianist too. She is the one who keeps us updated on the happenings
in the world of music

*Bollywood goes West*

India's most talented music composer AR Rahman continues to make waves
internationally. After providing the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay
Dreams, Rahman's latest The Lord of the Rings musical is currently enjoying
a sell-out London West End spell. Hollywood is also taking notice: his
Bollywood songs are increasingly being included on mainstream soundtracks.
After Nicholas Cage's Lord of War and Denzel Washington's Inside Man, the
Mozart from Madras's music can currently be heard on the end credits of the
current Uma Thurman release, The Accidental Husband. Rahman tells me: It's
great to go from brand Bollywood to international composer.

Not a word by word translation.

Bela Shende has sung the Manamohana Kanha Suno Na… song in the movie
Jodha-Akbar which was released quite recently and depicts the story of Mughal
king Akbar (played by Hrithik Roshan) married to a Hindu Rajput lady by the
name of Jodhaa-Bai (played by Aishwarya Rai). Bela is acknowledging the fact
that it was her dream to have worked with A. R. Rahman, the music director of
the movie and it came to fruition because of the recommendation by Ashutosh
Gowariker, the director of Jodhaa-Akbar.

The second para details Bela's tutelage in the Kirana gharana of Hindustani
music initially under her mother Mrs. Kusum Shende and also her grandmother.
Bela's elder sister Sawani is an accomplished classical singer in her own
right. Bela however has a natural inclination towards light music and two
sisters complement each other very well. Both Bela and Sawani visited Seattle
in 1998 and performed for Ragamala and the Seattle Maharashtra Mandal (this is
my part of the commentary J). Bela won the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest when Sonu
Nigam was the anchor and since then Bela started her playback singing career.
To her credit are albums like Kaisa yeh jaadu ho gaya…, Doorchya Ranat
based on poet Mahanaur, and Sahaj Tuzi Gaath Pade… based on the famous poet
G. D. Madgulkar. She has also provided playback for films like Ehsaas, Paheli,
Uttarayan, etc. She has sung songs in Marathi, Hindi, and Tamil.

She then goes on to acknowledge how A. R. Rahman put her at ease with his
recording practice for songs he directs. A. R. was openly appreciative of
Bela's singing of the song after Ashutosh had explained the situation in the
film in detail. The recording started at 11:30 pm and ended at 4:30 am. Bela
didn't get to listen to her own recording until almost 8 months after she sang
it at the time of the music release of the film. By that time there was a lot
of orchestration added to the song and it came out way better than expected.

Bela then talks about the advantages and disadvantages of talent-hunt shows
like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, etc. She mentions that getting a foot in the door of the
Hindi film singing is no easy task, but staying in the industry is even more
difficult with so much talent around. She says that whoever stays true to
professionalism will survive and succeed in the industry.

[arr] ( Semi ARR ) Plant Bollywood - ...there is so much more that I can do. - Raghav Sachar. An Interview

2008-03-05 Thread Vithur
Raghav Sachar is no stranger to the Indian music scene. With a voice worth
more than *24 Carat* gold and an amazing ability to play over 30
instruments, he's won fans all over the world. Below follows an interview
with Raghav Sachar *For the First Time* on PlanetBollywood.com, in which he
discusses *One Two Three*, his composition techniques, favorite
compositions, forthcoming assignments, and more!

*Kabul Express, Manzar (Sunday), and now One Two Three. You've certainly
created a special place for yourself in the Bollywood music scene. How do
you feel about the initial reactions to the music score for One Two Three?*

*One Two Three* is my first complete commercial film. I am very happy with
the way the music has shaped up. I am getting a very positive feedback from
the audiences.

*What's your favorite song in One Two Three*?

All songs are extremely close to my heart but if I had to choose one then it
would be Rock Mahi.

*You've certainly got a great vocal range—you actually sound pretty good in
the female portion of the title track in One Two Three :) Looks like the
female singers out there have got some additional competition! *

[Laughs] I have no intention of giving any female singer any competition…
besides they are all my close friends. It is just a one off thing that I did
for the song because it gave a different texture and sounded different. I
like experimenting and that's what I did with *One Two Three*.

*How do you decide which singers to use in a particular song—the
actor/actress the song is being filmed on? The mood of the song?*

I decide singers by seeing which singer would be able to take the song to a
different level. I like to work with people who are fast and spontaneous.
Two such people who I always work with are Sunidhi Chauhan and Sonu Nigam.
Both are brilliant singers and add a lot to my compositions. Of course I
have to keep in mind the actor on whom the song will be picturized. Their
voice quality and texture…

*What are the key factors you examine before deciding to compose music for a
film?*

The key factor is the situation the song is based upon. If it is romantic,
sad, or a club track, or just a chill out track, etc. The most important
thing is to grab hold of the director's vision and to understand the project
from his point of view. It helps if the director is a good narrator.

*You've also composed the music to your own albums. Do you feel that
composing for your own albums allows for more creative freedom, or do you
feel you are give enough creative freedom when composing for Bollywood
films?*

Composing for albums and films are two completely different things. My
albums are true replication of what I am going through in life personally.
There are no deadlines to meet and no one to report to. I am my own boss and
can make any kind of music without any interference. Having said that I do
not work with production houses and people who do not give me creative
freedom for my Bollywood projects. I have been very lucky to have worked
with two of the biggest production houses in India--Yash Raj and Big Screen
Entertainment. Both respect my space and give me the desired creative
freedom to create good music.

*What role do lyrics play in the composition process? Do you wait for the
lyrics to be penned down before you compose? Or, does it work the reverse
way?*

Lyrics are a major part of the composition process. There are no hard and
fast rules of composing melodies. It can work either way. Sometimes I create
better melodies just humming on a traffic signal. For instance the melody of
Kabul Fiza, Manzar and Rock Mahi were made before the lyrics were written.
Although, if I have the lyrics then I can compose more easily and faster.
But that's just me J

*What's your source of inspiration?*

I can get inspired anywhere by anything. Music is a 24-hour, ongoing process
for me. Any sound to my ears is music and I create music out of
everything--like horns on the road, industrial sounds like drills, etc. Most
of my spontaneous compositions happen in the outdoors when it is least
expected.

*I'm sure you must listen to a lot of music. What are a few of your favorite
compositions (other than your own)?*

My favorite band is called Incognito. It is a jazz funk band and they are
just phenomenal. Other artists I like are, Sting, Maroon 5, Kenny Garrette,
Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker, Jethro Tull, GR, Dream Theatre, Extreme,
Deep Purple. I have been a big time fan of R.D. Burman, Kishore Kumar,
Mohammad Rafi out of the Indian inspirations. A.R. Rahman is one of the
latest ones J

*You're surrounded by music all the time—are there moments when you just
want to get away from it all?*

Sometimes it gets too much, so I don't listen to anything while in the car.
I also exercise to get my mind off work. I go for swimming and squash.
Whenever possible I play golf, which helps me relax and rejuvenate.

*In the music industry, it's essential to constantly reinvent yourself. How
do you make sure

[arr] Jodha Akbar goes South

2008-03-05 Thread Vithur
Ashutosh Gowariker's epic romance *Jodha Akbar* will now be seen in down
south. Tamil audiences who saw Bollywood's hottest pair Aishwarya Bachchan
and Hrithik Roshan sizzle in the dubbed version of *Dhoom 2* will once again
hear them speak in Tamil.

The Hindi version of *Jodha Akbar*, which was released world wide three
weeks ago is said to have collected around Rs 70 crore with Chennai alone
making grand collections crossing the Rs 65 lakh mark.

With 60 prints in Tamil, the producers are certain that the dubbed version
of the movie will draw in more audiences, especially those who had trouble
understanding dialogues, which had a light dose of Urdu.

We believe they are superstars here also. They are well known across the
country and well known in the south and we want to cash on that, said
Henry, Distribution Head (South), UTV Motion Pictures.

The music of the film has been scored by the Mozart of the south, A R
Rehman. He has worked his magic in the dubbed version as well.

A bonus will certainly be a grand release of this movie in Telugu following
a star studded premiere in Hyderabad, which will be attended by none other
than the cast and crew of *Jodha Akbar* including Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya
Bachchan, A R Rehman and the man himself who has created box office history,
Ashutosh Gowariker.

[arr] I think JA's music is a commercial success

2008-03-05 Thread Chord
On Planetbollywood, Jashne Bahar and Khwaja occupy the number 1 and 3
spots for most recommended songs. User music ratings on that site are
between 9 and 10. On bollyvista, it has been number 1 on their site
for weeks. On Indiafm, (the same site where the music was panned), it
has moved from number 7 to 5 to 4 and now to number 2. That same site
also has a user music rating of 4.48 (ahem, Mr. Joginder) On the
boxoffice India website, JA music sales are number 1 in the South and
West and number 2 in the North and East. I think for a historical
film with a heavily classical music soundtrack, I would say that this
is quite remarkable. Of course, it dose help to not have much
competition around.

Movie appears to be a hit in India and blockbuster overseas, which is
helping the music sales. Perhaps the music sales are not blockbuster
in absolute numbers, but I am damn proud and happy for ARR. Three
years in a row makes this a commercial hat trick for ARR in
bollywoodfirst RDB, Second Guru, Third JAall hits both movie
and music wise!

i have visited few gurudwaras in my childhood and i have noticed the way they

peace

the same kinda ambience is created around the song...very peaceful still the

well imagination has no bounds so i i thought of sharing this :

with closed eyes i cud feel

Small boy is expressing all his expressions...all concerns
and his father sitting quietly AND SMILING looking at his son

Father's reflects the peace and calmness...
and son's cries reflects the sufi content

i knw its a crazy kinda imagination...

but just thought of sharing...

Re: [ARR] ARR and Sachin at it again!

2008-03-05 Thread Ganesh.V
ya rightly said so..
they both are like the same as such..u see how arr mixes with the youth and
brings out splendid music like rdb etc...,similarly sachin too mixes well the
young guns..and many factors closely resemble sachin like thier
humbleness, politeness, and even though they remain a stalwarts yet they seem as
if they didn do anythg

Proud to be an Indian with such greats..

all stalwarts equally . At that too at the same time..

Well its not a mere coincidence anymore ! While ARR gets 2 awards back to back
for Guru ( after criticised by many as mediocre! ) Sachin Tendulkar plays 2
match winning innings ( after criticised by many ! )

Sometimes I can't help wonder if people just put up numbers that
they randomly can think of. Where are these numbers coming from? The
author does not validate them. It all looks a bit dubious to me.

We must act from now on to promote our boss's albums to prevent this
in future...

it will be a good idea if u can include the Asha Bhosle track from Meenaxi - a
very underrated but smashing track esp the instrumental interludes - Very grand.

I would like to see if we can up with a list of epic sounding tracks
from ARR. When I say epic, I'm describing tracks that are way beyond
the norm. Grandeur instrumentation, stunning instrumental sections,
large, expansive sound with choir, choruses, etc. Some recent epic
tracks from ARR that come to mind are Jaage from Guru, Man Mohanna and
Azeem from JA, and Divinity Theme from Elizabeth.

Any others you can think of?
