[arr] Maestro A. R. Rahman talks about his passion for nurturing young talent

2008-08-22 Thread Vithur
*Soul-stirring notes *

For all his achievements, A.R. Rahman is humility personified. The ace
composer now wants to nurture youngsters with a passion for music. And his
KM Music Conservatory, an International School of Music and Music
Technology, is a step in that direction.

"We hope to expand the horizons of musicians in India by creating awareness
about Western music and Music Technology, while continuing to respect and
strengthen the art of Indian music. Aspirants will be trained to reach high
standards of proficiency as musicians with good grounding in the technology
that goes behind the process of making music," explains the enthusiastic
founder and principal of the Conservatory.

When it comes to acknowledging good work, Rahman is second to none. At the
recent audio release function of the film *Saroja,* he heaped praise on
music director Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Healthy competition

"Yuvan was seven or eight when I was working with Ilayaraja. I have seen him
grow as a music director. I am happy that he is among the best composers in
the industry right now. I am sure he will reach greater heights," he says.
Rahman has an inclination for the genre of qawwali, and the recent *Khwaja
Mere Khwaja* in Ashutosh Gowarikar's *Jodhaa Akbar* was a huge hit.

"I am happy that the number has been accepted by various sections of the
society. In fact, it was originally composed as an independent number that
preached the fear of God. It was adapted for the film," says Rahman whose
compositions in Ashutosh's earlier films *Swades *and *Lagaan *also topped
the charts.

In a career spanning over 15 years, Rahman has composed music for over 100
films, most of them big-budget ventures.

"That is not intentional. But, in ventures where the focus is on my music,
expectations are high. So, was the case with *Sakkarakatti*, but I am
pleased the songs have gone down well with the audience," he says.
Period tunes

*Marmayogi,* a mega-budget project set in 6 A.D. will see Kamal Haasan and
Rahman team up after a gap of almost eight years. The last time Rahman
scored music for a Kamal movie was *Thenali*. "It is very early to comment
on the movie. But I will do a bit of research, since this is a period film,"
he says.

And how about working in Sondarya Rajnikant's animation film, *Sultan, The
Warrior*? "It is exciting and offers endless scope," he states. On his
nephew G.V. Prakash Kumar, who is making an impact in Kollywood, the 'Mozart
of Madras' feels that Prakash still has got a long way to go. "He is doing a
good job. He has composed for a Rajnikanth film (*Kuselan*) very early in
his career. I am happy with his progress," he says, smiling.

Now, Rahman is busy working on an album with desi rapper Blaaze, where you
can hear the *Thirukkural* in rap format. Rahman is producing the album.
"The intention is to take the *Thirukkural *to the next generation. The
success of *Vande Mataram* spurred me to take the project. I hope youngsters
will like it," he says, with hope. And, why not? After all, Allah Rakkha
Rahman has proved a master in gauging the pulse of the youth.

This is the answer to those are on high decibels on music
overcoming

lyrics. Those foreigners were keen only on the music and thats the

treat we get in ARR's music.

Truely Universal !

This date will probably change a few times before we hear the music.

Mindset

Song: Taxi...Taxi. ..

Film: Sakarakatti

Music: Mozart of Madras

First I read about this song in 'The Hindu - Metroplus' then listened to it in
a car on my way back to Chennai from Kancheepuram. And then went to 'Music
World' in Pondy Bazaar and bought the CD. I picked it up immediately on
entering the shop and then was leisurely browsing through the other sections. I
suddenly had an urge to buy an international English album. I am no great fan
of English songs or anything, but I thought that listening to Tamil songs alone
was not good enough.(Especially when you have a Sony 5.1 Music system to
listen). I wanted to feel sophisticated. Upmarket. Class. Whatever. But I had
no clue as to what to purchase. All English albums were priced above 400Rs
whereas 'Sakarakatti' had cost me a mere 99Rs. This made the urge to buy one of
them, even stronger. Upmarket.Sophistica ted. Class.

Queen. MLTR. Safri Duo. Bob Dylan. Enigma. Pink Floyd. Deep Purple. Eminem.
Yanni. Linkin Park..

It was then that an elderly couple entered the shop. They were foreigners but I
could not make out what language they were speaking. I think it was Dutch. Or
German. Or something else.

The lady went straight to the section where they had listed Tamil albums in
popularity-wise order and pulled out a copy of 'Sakarakatti' from the first
slot where it was perched. She pointed to the picture of A.R. Rahman and said
something to her attentive husband in an excited manner. They paid the bill and
left.

I let out a deep breath and left after paying for 'Sakarakati' .

Thanks for sharing your experience, Dinesh. It was really nice to know
other's experience about how they hooked to ARR's music. I'm sure one day
you'll find your experience in someone else's blog very soon.

I've already shared my experience about when and how I heard ARR's song... I
still remember those days.

Those days as soon as a songs are released, I could easily identify whether
its ARR's or not (before buying casset).

Re: [arr] NO healthy, constructive & meaningful posts on ARR's music anymore here... [SAD]

2008-08-22 Thread Siraj K
My dear friends,

Thanks all for considering my email positively (because I didn't get any
bashing from anybody so far).

But I noticed onething. Everybody is pointing to Vithur only. Why? I never
meant his posts; I meant in general. Sorry, Vithur (don't misunderstand
me). And few said they're with Vithur; I'm also with Vithur (since I posted
this, does it mean that I'm against Vithur?).

As somebody stated, though we've google alerts & RSS Feeds facility, it is
easy to get all info here in one place (being posted by Vithur and others).
But I think this is not the place for that purpose.

If somebody wants to know about other stuffs (like Marmayogi, Robot,
Maniratnam, what Aishwarya & Abhishek are doing, etc...), let them go and
find it from other places. Its not a place to read about the progress of
those movies. We already knew ARR is assoicated with these movies because of
which we don't have to know the progress of the movie too; we don't want to
know who is the producer, what is his budget, where and when the shooting is
getting started? I'm sure even ARR is not interested about all these Qs.
Then why should we bother? If ARR is doing some research on music for those
movies, those articles can be posted here. If ARR is doing some research on
6th century music to compose for Marmayogi, we can discuss here "what could
it be? how it could sound? etc..."

Be frank my friends... We know that there are definitely VERY LESS about
ARR in the recent posts than NON-ARR stuffs (may be 1 or 2 lines about ARR).

Sorry for the comparison here...

Just visit "Ilayaraja - Orkut community" once; you'll understand what the
community is meant for. They're discussing lot about IR's music and
specialities, nook and corner of his music. And visit "Kamal Hasan's Orkt
Community", they discuss a lot about Kamal (leave some exceptional posts
apart) and his movies (for instance, they're discussing about Dasavatharam
right from the movie release and revealing lot of info everyday). They look
really logical and interesting to know about Kamal & his talent.

In the same way, we've to discuss about ARR, his music and his talent and
small small stuffs he hides in his music. So that other fans who have less
knowledge on music (like me) will come to know the talent of ARR.

Just posting "whether the movie shooting is started or not" neither helps in
understanding ARR's music nor his talent.

Hey Bergin, you do remember those days (I miss those days yaar)...!!! I
don't want to create an argument among our friends (Rahmaniacs). What I want
is 'reasonable analysis' and 'worthy contents'.

Thanks for not bashing me.

Cheers,
Siraj

[arr] A R Rahman sent me a message once saying you are an ambassador for Islam.

2008-08-22 Thread Vithur
The 'Indian Mujahideen' recently warned four leading Muslim actors – Shah
Rukh, Aamir, Salman and Saif Ali, all, coincidentally, answering to the name
of Khan – that if they didn't keep off working in Indian movies, they'd run
the risk of 'paying a price'.

While the Big Khans are extremely reticent after Saif and Shabana's
statements, previous occasions when they have been more vocal in responding
to such issues indicate that they don't see things differently. Shah Rukh,
who earlier this year said in an interview to Tehelka that "AR Rahman sent
me a message once saying you are an ambassador for
Islam.
I think I truly am," argued in 2004 while talking to the BBC, that "Indians
by nature right now are very secular, have been very secular, and the
biggest case in point is that a Muslim guy is one of the top stars for the
last 13 years, they have accepted me, nobody has ever questioned my
religion."

Re: [arr] If Rahman starts Music composer's academy for aspirant music composers?

2008-08-22 Thread Ramesh R
Are you serious? There are plenty of schools around the world for music
composition (film music included). A couple of the top ones in the US are USC
and Berklee. USC in particular has had the greats like Miklos Rozsa, Elmer
Bernstein and Jerry Goldsmith as part of their faculty.
It is ridiculous to claim that there are no schools to teach music composition.

I know AR has started KM music conservatory
, I think in that , teaching various instruments , training on improve
singing etc . I think in world also no institute is teaching how to
compose music. In trinity college of music, london is giving diploma and
degree certificates on various grades in paticular instruments. I know
composing is one's own creativity but it has to be a topic .If Rahman
takes initiative for this and include in KM Music conservatory and
topics to include is other geners of music and Beethovan's and Baach's
style of music

There is another specialty of this song and that is the entire song
doesn't have the percussion. neither in the interludes. The bass
chords does the magic. i guess no other song sung by Hariharan falls
in that range.

Its so romantic. So pure. The pace of the song is slow but very
soothing. The words are extremely sensual and so is Nandita in the

very well. Beautiful. Hariharan SIr.. My God!! He just takes any

Lovely. I keep hearing it and find myself in complete bliss.

Mindset

Song: Taxi...Taxi...

Upmarket.Sophisticated. Class.

Queen. MLTR. Safri Duo. Bob Dylan. Enigma.

They paid the bill and
left.

I let out a deep breath and left after paying for 'Sakarakati'.

[arr] Trisha confirms rendering her voice for Rahman

2008-08-22 Thread Vithur
Actress Trisha making high waves with her stunning performance in tinsel
town is soon to appear on a new dimension. Yes, you will soon see Trisha
donning a new role not in reel, but in real life. Many wouldn't have got to
hear that Trisha has got an excellent voice and she is great singer. But,
known for picking up the best singers and making them render their voice in
his musical score, Rahman always makes it big. This time he goes for Trisha
and she has confirmed about rendering her voice in Rahman's music probably
for the film 'Chennayil Oru Mazhaikaalam' directed by Gowtham Menon.

Speaking about this, Trisha says that she is quite excited since she has
been an ardent fan of A.R. Rahman from a very long time. Getting on with
Abhiyum Naanum that is slated to hit the screens on October 2, the young
missy has uttered that she has spelled out her uttermost effort of churning
a good performance. Perhaps, her fans would spot her in a new dimension…

Re: [arr] NO healthy, constructive & meaningful posts on ARR's music anymore here... [SAD]

2008-08-22 Thread Bergin Panimayam
Friends,

First, why should we argue like this for nothing? See the thread it has gained
for no use. All of us here are ARR fans, lets be united. Siraj, I remember our
hostel days in Jamal, then we argue with non-ARR fans that argue with us. You,
me and other Siraj on a side supporting ARR.

But all of us here are ARR fans, why to indulge unnecessary arguement. In fact
i didnt want to read all the messages on this topics.

I very much understand and appreciate your intentions of having a good and
healthy conversation. Did you notice, in the past month or so, there's not much
posting from Gopal or Vijay, very few infact. That doesnt mean they are out of
the forum or Silent... Instead of arguing, lets start a good healthy
discussions.

One thing, Let us all appreciate Vithur for his efforts to post news that comes
every day. I do have my own Google Alerts, that alerts me on ARR news every
day. But i find it difficult to read 'em all. And this man is taking efforts to
keep the forum informed on news involving ARR. And let's not forget the charity
work he does. Hats off to you Vithur.

Let's discuss, if there's a way to popularise ARR to the rest of the world, how
as a fan we can take this to other people around the world and show we have a
man that has sold so many records in just 16 yrs. Think of what we can do to
spread the word. let's all market the brand ARR to the world as much possible.

Post articles where ever possible, guys abroad, talk to your non-indian
colleagues about ARR on your casual discussions . And let them know about his
music. That's what we should do and that will help improve his music sales in
US and other countries and will in turn help ARR to go more closer to Grammy
and other awards.

[arr] Sakkarakatti's technical brilliance

2008-08-22 Thread rahmanfever
Sakkarakatti's technical brilliance

An interesting aspect of this film is that the technical part has been
done with tremendous care to live up to the musical brilliance of A. R.
Rahman. The film has the creative energy of two cinematographers in the
form of Raja and Andrew. Andrew worked as the cinematographer but
unfortunately had to leave because of a prior commitment with a Hindi
film. This brought cinematographer Raja into the picture. Reports
suggest that the director is happy with the efforts of Raja.

'Sakkarakatti' is expected to be loaded with Computer Generated Imagery
and all technical facets have come out very well. The film releases in
September.

[arr] If Rahman starts Music composer's academy for aspirant music composers?

2008-08-22 Thread aneeshksasi

Hai all,

I know AR has started KM music conservatory
, I think in that , teaching various instruments , training on improve
singing etc . I think  in world also no institute is teaching how to
compose music. In trinity college of music, london is giving diploma and
degree certificates on various grades in paticular instruments. I know
composing is one's own creativity but it has to be a topic .If Rahman
takes initiative for this and include in KM Music conservatory and
topics to include is other geners of music and Beethovan's and Baach's
style of music

[arr] ONE OF MY FAV COMPOSITIONS OF ARR

2008-08-22 Thread ramya varma

Hi There,

One of my fav compositions of ARR is " DHEEMI DHEEMI" from the movie 1947
Earth. I just love this song. I actually the entire album. But theres something
about this song that makes me hear it again and again. Now u guys might comment
that.. Well whts new in that.. all ARR songs are like that. Yes. But this
particular song grows on you. It is picturized on Rahul Khanna and Nandita das.
They are cycling away . Its so romantic. So pure. The pace of the song is slow
but very soothing. The words are extremely sensual and so is Nandita in the
song. The song , the words and the picturzation compliment each other very
well. Beautiful. Hariharan SIr.. My God!! He just takes any composition to
another level. Beyond any composers imagination. Lovely. I keep hearing it and
find myself in complete bliss.

[arr] How I got hooked to Rahman's music.... My Story !

2008-08-22 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
Here is a chance for all to make meaningful discussion. I will start
with my story as how I got hooked to Rahman's music..

The year was 1993, probably Jan end. I had gone to Hyderabad for
office work, had some spare time so met my family friends. They
recommended me to see a Tamil movie which was the talk of the town in
those days. The friend was at loss of words in describing the movie
and how it was different and all that. I had seen quite a few Tamil /
Telugu movies till then, thanks to our old DoorDarshan who used to
telecast regional movies at 1.30PM every sunday. So I ventured out to
see that movie. Unfortunately did not get ticket and returned to Pune.
But the name of the movie had registered in my mind.

In Pune, I just casually checked with the local Video library (
remember those VHS cassettes ? ) if he has heard of a Tamil movie
called ROJA. He dished out the cassette and I was on my way home. The
cassette rolled on and the chase of the terrorist in the Jungles of
Kashmir began with a low frequency droning sound and sudden sharp
tones in between. Something registered in mine and my family's mind
that this is not the standard Tamil movie, it is something different

That day we watched Tamil Roja, WITHOUT SUBTITLES, at a stretch and
understood every word of it ! There was a general consensus that the
music is totally different. Over the next 24 hours, we watched the
movie twice or thrice, this time for the music and Background score.
The name RAHMAN had not registered in our heads even after that.

Then the hunt for the Tamil Audio cassette started. I could not locate
the cassette anywhere in Pune but at Mumbai's VT station, I got a
cassette ( obviously pirated ) with Roja on one side and Surian songs
on another. I still have that cassette with me.

One year later my career took me to Abu Dhabi where I was in the midst
of many Malyali / Tamil employees and got to see VCD movies of
Gentleman and Thiruda Thiruda, again, without subtitles. The music of
Thiruda Thiruda simply blew me away and I felt a distinct familiarity
with the music. The enquiry about Music Director yielded a reply
"RAHMAN". "Ah ! I have heard his music in Roja", I told my friends. My
Tamil friends suddenly started taking me seriously. They got for me
audio cassettes of Puthiya Mugham, Kadhalan and other movies which
were released by then.

I returned to India in 1997 and during my immediate business trip to
Chennai, went to a Cassette shop in Adyar Signal and asked him to get
me whatever cassettes he had with RAHMAN as music director...all
languages ! He enquired if I had come with enough money. Luckily I
had.

Some years after, One Chennai based friend LAXMAN introduced me to
Rahman fan group and then I typed my first query on Vaishnavar audio.
Since then life is a nonstop joyful journey. Because of Rahman my
friends circle got expanded exponentially, Gopal, Vijay (Happy
Birthday Vijay !), Sirish, Amith, Durba, entire RAHMANIA performing
group "The Wandering Souls" consisting of my Nephews and Nieces,
supremely talented bunch of guys led by Anmol Bhave, and all of you
the face-less Rahmaniacs !

Now there is a definite purpose to living a meaningful life with
Rahman around, there is a non-stop Rahman song playing in the head,
the mobile ringtone is ofcourse Rahman. I found that Rahman music is a
definite cure to depression..

I have not met Rahman, not do I think I will ever get a chance to meet
him. But through his Music, I feel he is so close to me that if I do
meet him, I will probably say " Hello Rahman ! So we meet again."

I always thank GOD for introducing me to Rahman's music

Best regards

I post relevant information only abt ARR... and even if I post it
from different websites... I post them, only if there is some additional info
or if something is different...

I dont have the expertise to analyse or dissect AR music...

they were posting interesting topics in the last some months. Hope they will

Excellent Siraj. You have expressed i think what lot of fans have in mind. I am
also losing interest in this group because lots of repeat information and no
healthy debate. One comes up with a point if some dont like it, they start
bashing. Every member need to be respected here and respect his opinion. This
is a sincere request to all moderators.

Long live ARR.

My dear fellow Rahmaniacs,

No offense meant; I don't intend to hurt anybody here; please understand.
It has been a long time since we had some healthy, constructive and meaningful
article / discussions happened in our own ARR's Yahoo Group Forum.
Friends, please don't ask me, "How many posts have you posted? How many
articles you wrote? And for how many posts have you replied?" I've no answer
for this because I'm not so good in music to write a review or comment on ARR's
music. But as a fan, I do read all the posts (healthy & constructive) posted by
other fans here. I'm an active SILENT member.
Where are Chord, Amit, Rawat, and other strong members who writes reviews or
analyzes ARR's music and songs?
But now a days what we get to read in this forum is just "Copy & Paste" from
various websites and "bits & pieces" about ARR (& many times just info related
to ARR) from other sources. Many times it happens to get same info from various
websites (for ex, Kamal's Marmayogi, Mani's Mahabharat, Shankar's Robo,
Akshay's Blue, Rashid Ali's interviews, etc, etc...) We're seeing same info
about these on different posts atleast 5 times everyday (same info is repeated
over and over; again and again - by various fans; many times by the same fan).
Its really boring and frustrating to read.
There are few posts where there is no trace of ARR's name at all.
Yahoo Group is becoming like Orkut community where we don't see any healthy
debate or discussions.
Please guys, old active members of Yahoo! fans club, please come again and
start the healthy discussions.
It looks we're working hard to reach the message / post count to reach 1
million; we don't need that. If we want to reach 1 million, we can simply start
posting "I LOVE YOU ARR" everyday 10 times; soon we'll reach 1 billion or 1
trillion. We need some meaningful analysis and constructive debates / reviews
on ARR's music.
Sorry if my mail hurts anybody.
Cheers,
Siraj

[arr] what happened to the other songs of boys?

2008-08-22 Thread snkishanthnelson
hi all,
we all know that shankar retook the full movie 'boys' after he
came to know that the story and screen play of the movie 'thuluvatho
illamai' and 'boys' are very similar.
so my question is that where are the songs that a.r.r composed for the
cancelled movie? will it be released? or is it already used in other
films?
regards
Nelson.

Thanks Neetika... I would surely continue whatever I can ..

henceforth, I will improvise in giving information to make it
interesting.

I will add only the extra information given by some websites, which
has not been done by previous websites.

Thanks once again
