[arr] Yuvvraaj Zindagi revisited

2008-12-02 Thread V S Rawat
If there is a downside of too many releases in a short duration, that is
  - we jump between albums and songs and don't devote time to enjoy the
full beauty of each creation.

I confess that I suffered from the above, and couldn't really enjoy ADA
till now, and other songs of other albums also.

Now, that there is a lull till the next release by our man, I am getting
time to revisit them.

I chanced to hear Yuvvraaj again, sad that the film is a flop, though
everyone is indeed commenting now that ARR's music is marvelous in this
and a sure shot plus side of the movie. I enjoyed the movie myself, and
the songs picturization.

So, I took a break from Ghazini and SDM to listen to Yuvvraaj, and
further beauties got revealed.

I am not very comfortable with using headphones. it sort of binds me to
my pc desk and degree of movement gets restricted so I avoid that. I had
not heard any of the recent releases through headphone, and heard them
only on average quality speakers.

And, this time, while hearing to zindagi, I noticed that there is a
vocal echo of shrinivas' voice at places. I had totally missed out on
that till now. And then, after the louder volume of pc speaker didn't
clarify that much and loudness became irritating, I had to wear the
headphone.

And wow. What a song. What a beauty.

For last 10 years or so, Srinivas' 1947 Earth number Ye jo Zindagi hai
has been my all time ARR best. That was the last time, I had felt that
walking two feet above the ground effect, the song that had consumed
me, that had captivated me, I had felt like a teenager in first love.

And here was another zindagi in the same voice by the same ARR. And what
a beauty it is. And I am again feeling those same above feelings even
though I have aged a decade in the meantime since previous zindagi.

People had said that Water was subtle. I think this zindagi is the most
subtle song ever given by our man.

What a contemplative voice. Sadness san melodrama. A guiltless,
confusionless quest and exploration. Putting deep feelings to words.

The song nearest to yuvvraaj's zindagi genre that comes to my mind is
another Gulzar song from Anand (MD: Salil Chaudhary) - kahin door jab
din dhal jaayein though there is a lot of difference in the sadness
level of two.

The negative, I think, is this entire song got wasted on majority of
listeners - It is so subtle, it requires such a solitude, devotion, good
system, player, speakers/ headphone, stereo that such beauty would never
have become apparent to those who listened to it on common radio,
transistors, on vividh bharti/ fm channels, on TV, even worse for those
who listened to this in parts as TV/ fm often doesn't play full songs
and there is a lot of maddening blabbering on fm.

The film didn't help this song much be bisecting it, showing in two parts.

So, it is sad that this being one of ARR's best song go mostly waste.

Great post. One of your best posts in recent times. Zindagi is indeed
the pick of the lot for me. Reminds me of beautiful, melody rich
ghazals from yore with great lyrics, great feeling, and soothing
effect. Sad that most people dismiss this song. Thank God there is
someone like ARR to create such beautiful melodies in the hip hop,
rhythm driven era we are in.

Three compositions of A R Rahman from Mani Ratnam's shelved Lajjo are
now in Mani's Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer

By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are doing what Aamir Khan and
Kareena Kapoor couldn't do… singing A R Rahman's songs that were meant
to be used in the Mani Ratnam's shelved film Lajjo.

Confirming the news, Rahman said, Some of the songs in Lajjo were
generic, so we have translocated them into Raavana (working title).
Such things happen once in a while. No regrets. There is no time for
that. Regret is boring. Mani's new film is a new genre for me. I've
done nothing like this before. So that's exciting.

However, Rahman's songs for Kamal Haasan's shelved Marmyogi are yet to
see the light of the day. Rahman said, I had composed three songs for
Kamal Haasan's Marmyogi but he said that this film is being put aside
for another film. Though Rahman is working on another film for
Hassan, he cannot use those compositions in the new film. What can I
do about it? is all Rahman said and shrugged.

Though Rahman tried fitting them in Ghajini, Aamir Khan, the lead
actor from the film, insisted on a fresh score. Rahman sighed,
There's a lot of pressure to deliver because Harris Jairaj's music in
the Tamil version of Ghajini was a big hit. My songs in the Hindi
Ghajini are all new. And I hope they are as popular as the songs in
the Tamil version.

lilting melody with grace and feeling. I really don't mind Benny's

 25. You eagerly wait for each and every Rahman release, you set
very high expectations for each album, a day after the release you
will bash the album as below-average, a few months later you will
hail the same album as a masterpiece and one of your personal
 favorites.

 26. You suffer from this rare condition where... you wake up from
your sleep, humming or singing a Rahman tune, involuntarily. You
realize the condition is severe when you randomly shout out a Rahman

 27. You may forget to take your dose of medication but you can
not forget to get your daily dose of Rahman.

 28. You set high expectations of Rahman, and are honored and
touched that he cares about you and works hard to satisfy you.

[arr] Mumbai Mirror - H.Sridhar passes away

H Sridhar passes away

The renowned sound engineer died of a cardiac arrest in Chennai on Sunday night

 By Ashwini Deshmukh
Posted On Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Four times National Award winning Sound Engineer Sridhar Hariharan passed away
late on Sunday night. He died of a cardiac arrest. Sridhar who was fondly
called the ‘Mozart of Madras’ had closely worked on a number of films with
music maestro AR Rahman. He had been working on the music score for Ghajini
till the end. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

We spoke to Aamir Khan who immediately went to Chennai to attend the funeral.
Aamir said, “Sridhar was one of the finest technicians of our industry and a
dear friend. I had worked closely with him especially during the final mix of
Lagaan. The news of his passing away is a huge shock and I feel a deep sense of
loss. This tragic news coming at a time when we are all grappling with the
devastating attack on Mumbai has left me completely shattered.”

Sridhar had pioneered the use of digital sound in Indian films. The Chief Audio
Engineer at Media Artists started his professional sound engineering career in
1988. He had worked in over 200 films with renowned filmmakers like Mani
Ratnam, Ashutosh Gowarikar, K Balachander, Shankar, Kamal Hassan, Priyadarsan,
and Ram Gopal Varma. Sridhar engineered all songs and background scores for
films like Roja, Gentleman, Kadhalan, Bombay, Thiruda Thiruda, Rangeela,
Indian, Iruvar, Kaala Paani and Minasaara Kanavu. He was awarded the
President's Gold Medal (The National Award for Best Audiography) four times for
Mahanadi in 1994, Dil Se in 1999, Lagaan in 2001 and Kannathil Muththamittal in
2003.

Sridhar also engineered and mixed albums for George Harrison of the Beatles,
John Neptune Kaizan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, L Shankar and John
McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra Shakti fame).

Despite repeated attempts, AR Rahman remained unavailable for comment.

  Hello,

We as Indians, witnessed a tragedy in the last 5 days - the Terrorist
attacks in Bombay in which many innocent civilians lost their lives and so
did many of the best cadre cops and commandos.

We, as A.R.Rahman fans, received one more tragic news - that of the
 untimely demise of H.Sridhar.

We might not have only expressed it, but H.Sridhar's craftwork has been so
much entwined with Rahman's music and we all have been H.Sridhar's fans as
well, all along. We only never expressed it exactly in that way. but i
strongly believe that all ARR fans would have been and are fans of H.Sridhar
(and Sivakumar too) because he was responsible for the sound of ARR songs.
His demise means immense loss, not only to Rahman, but also to all of us.

At this juncture, I only request Rahman to, IF POSSIBLE, release a personal
album (private album), *dedicating it to all those who lost their lives in
Bombay tragedy and H.Sridhar too*. An album which is all about peace. I
know my wish seems to be far fetched, but then, i think it would be a humble
gesture, to pay tribute. The reason i am suggesting or proposing this is
because i am sure that Rahman himself might have been terribly moved by
 these tragedies.

Probably he can do it with Connections album too, provided the theme and
mood of the songs in this album are in-line with sentiments i or rather we
all feel, in a time like this.

My message might or might not reach ARR. But i am still trying,by posting
it here, only because we have a huge fans base and if many of the fans here
share the same thoughts as i do, probably it might reach Rahman through some
channel. I hope he reads this or atleast someone from this group can pass
 this to him.

 Just hoping.

has never been quite vocal about this before. It's only natural that
he feels this way and I'm glad he can be forthright about it.

While watching the video songs of Ghajini did anyone observe a slight delay

This is more so visible in Guzarish. I hope they get this rectified , cuz i
saw this with Lagaan and the experience was horrible. There was a sync
mismatch with audio and video throughout the movie.

[arr] A R Rahman’s music and Subhash Ghai’s direction — Alka Yagnik

2008-12-02 Thread Vithur
And, even today, in the crowd of voices, her sweet velvety voice stands out.
In the late 80s and 90s, female playback singing became synonymous with Alka
Yagnik. And, in her 27 years of playback singing career, Alka was on a
roller-coaster ride for more than 20 years. But now, her fans have to wait a
for a while before they can hear her again. It's a deliberate decision
because the songs these days are not my cup of tea. After having sung a
variety, I do not find anything that excites me. Most of the songs are very
noisy or have a Sufi touch, she explains.

But, if the songs meet her criteria, she is always ready to take them up.
And, what did she like about the recent Subhash Ghai film for which she sang
a couple of songs? A R Rahman's music and Subhash Ghai's direction — need
anything more be said? she asks.

The hunt for new voices by directors comes with a tenuous promise of talent.
Does she agree to this? Talent doesn't matter much these days. The advanced
recording techniques can make an out-of-tune singer sound sonorous. You
don't need to be a refined singer to foray into playback singing, she says.

In her heydays, singers were recorded performing live at one go. If one made
a mistake, one had to start right from the beginning. But, today, it's much
more easy since songs are recorded line by line. That's why there's an
influx of so many singers.

Alka has also been a judge in realty shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge,
and Voice of India. And, she enjoyed judging the budding talent. But, are
reality shows the best way to tap talent? Many talented singers are spotted
in these shows. They receive initial boost, but they get lost in the crowd,
as every show brings in fresh talent and more winners.

Although she is not recording many film songs, she is busy grooming new
talent through reality shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs. Also, she is
working on a fusion album of semi-classical melodies with Western classical
music. And, when she is not doing any of these, she is busy with her
concerts.

But, at the moment, she is firm in her decision to do quality music. I want
to do something new. I do not want to add quantity, all that matters to me
now is quality. If quality is her yardstick, that is what we will get.
Indeed, we always have.

initially i did not like it that much. i placed it number three after
Kaisey mujhe and Guzarish. but as always ARR's magic has done wonders.
now Behka is my most favorite from the album, i am now totally crazy
about it. what a stylish song it is, with jazz flavor and marvelous
use of saxophones, trumpets and drums. the song is complete heaven
especially when it transforms into high note portions at 2:14 and
4:39. drums in background are awesome in these portions. just try it
with headphones and u will know. i am sure no other MD out there can
create such a song. Karthik's vocals are out of the world, i wonder
why ARR did not use him much. he is unmatchable in this song, both in
low and high notes. another beauty of the song is the two different
tunes in two antras. btw did u guys notice this is now becoming more
common in ARR's songs, other recent examples are Kaise mujhe and Tu
meri dost hai.

'Slumdog Millionaire' is the New 'Magnolia'
Posted by Ryan Brockington at 12:02 PM on December 1, 2008
Tracked under: melikey

I saw Slumdog Millionaire this weekend and I am literally
about to freak out all over the sidewalk. Not since Magnolia have I
seen a movie where the music and acting mesh so well that the outcome
is that of pure genius.
The movie, directed by Danny Boyle (28 Days Later), is the story
of how impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik became a contestant on the
Hindi version of Who Wants to be A Millionaire? Basically it tells
how he knew each question in a whimsical back story filled with
heartache, betrayal and falling in love with his friend from childhood,
Latika.

Now, I don't want to take any attention away from the
script and directing by saying this movie is brilliant because of the
music alone, because it is not. But this isn't MovieBlog, it's
PopTracks, so I'm talking music here folks. Right from the chase scene
near the beginning, I knew the soundtrack was going to be a key part of
the story. The music actually got better as the film went along (just
like Magnolia), from the love theme all the way to the Bollywood
dance number during the credits.

The soundtrack for Slumdog
Millionaire was released on iTunes, but the CD won't be out until Dec.
23. The songs blend together better than a giant smoothie, most of
which were composed by the monstrously popular A.R. Rahmam and
vocalized by the brilliant M.I.A. The opening track O... Saya has a
spectacular, expansive vocal
track that evokes the scenic vistas of India that Boyle sprinkles
liberally throughout Slumdog. Ringa Ringa is a catchy tune that
drips with exoticism and Jai Ho, the music that accompanies the final
dance sequence, is still as exuberant in audio form as it was on
screen.

At the end of the movie, when all credits had rolled,
I sat there knowing that this was the future of amazing musical
accompaniment. That tingly feeling I got when the cast of Magnolia
sang Wise Up returned to me once again as Litka looked up at her love
Jamal at the train station. Please see this movie, if not for the
wonderful music, then for the pure love of amazing cinema. (Did I
mention the Ting Tings Great DJ is in the trailer)

I am here in Chennai to meet Shridhar for the last time. Went to his house
last night to meet his family who are in shock and grief. As he lay in the
centre of the gathering he looked peaceful, almost as if he were just
asleep. I met his parents, brothers, wife and sons who were all very
dignified in their moment of deep pain.

Shridhar was one of the finest technicians of our industry and a dear
friend. We have worked together a number of times, and very closely during
Lagaan. He did the final mix of the film, which is the last and most crucial
creative process in film making. A close associate of A.R., he has worked
together with him on a majority of his songs and background scores. In fact
he was in A.R.'s studio until 4am yesterday morning working with A.R. and
Murgadoss on our film. By around 8.30am he had passed away in his sleep.

The sudden news of his most untimely death came to me yesterday morning when
I was still trying to pull myself out of the depressive state of mind I had
slid into post the attacks on Mumbai. It left me shattered.

With appreciation and gratitude to the security forces who acted with
courage, and with a prayer in my heart for those departed.

Faith.

Valayappati Song. Actually, in the beginning, we had written some
 other
lyrics, and Rahman Sir suggested that we can include all sorts of
instruments in the song lyrics itself, and make it sound different.
 It was

Rahman Sir wanted some sort of a discotheque type of a song. He was

 Dr. at
times, as I hold a Ph D in Tamil Literature.

  *Elay Elay – Sakkarakatti *

It was Rahman Sir's idea for the entire lyrics for the song. The
 theme of
the song was to picturise a group of boys aged about 8 – 10 years
 who would
grow up, and to highlight on their friendship. Earlier, I had
 written
philosophical lyrics. Rahman sir suggested that I was very serious,

He had suggested a lot of lyrics for the song.

  *Taxi – Taxi *

Earlier, it was a very pure song. He suggested that we can explain
friendship in a very jolly manner. We wanted to try out something
 that can
describe friendship among young blood. The Director suggested that
 we could

doubt it will be playing in my iPod way beyond the films release.
Everything in the track melds beautifully, from Javed Ali's vocals to
Rahman's music and Prasoon Joshi's touching lyrics. One listen and you'll
be hooked.
*
'Aye Bachchu':* The track is quite different from the romantic 'Guzarish.'
Suzanne D'Mello belts out the rock tinged party song. It has an undeniable
toe-tapping rhythm with a western beat. It's quite easy to tell this is a
Rahman track with hints of his past numbers from 'Chak De! India' and
'Hindustani.'
*
'Kaise Mujhe':* The haunting track's musical composition is impeccable, the
beat, the beautiful sitar, slow build up, touching lyrics and Shreya
Ghoshal's vocals work magically. One complaint however is, I can't help but
think how the track would've sounded had it been sung by Sonu Nigam, or
Shaan as opposed to Benny Dayal. It may not have 'hit' written all over it
at first listen, but it will resonate with audiences after the release for
sure.
*
'Bekha': * From the first note you know you're in for something different.
The track isn't something you'd typically hear in a Bollywood soundtrack,
with bits of the piano and the unexpected use of the saxophone. You can't
help but be reminded by 'Main Aisa Kyun Hoon' from 'Lakshya.' It should be
interesting to see how it's pictured, as this is the track that will feature
Aamir in 6 different looks. Karthik's vocals are perfectly suited for
'Bekha.'
*
'Latto': *One of the best upbeat tracks off the album. Shreya Ghoshal
shows off her versatility with this one, as does Rahman, as it's the only
track on the soundtrack that doesn't scream Rahman from first listen. The
fun carefree track will have you bobbing your head.

The soundtrack to
'Ghajini'http://www.desihits.com/blog/article/bollywood-music-review-hit-or-sht-ghajini-20081202/www.desihits.com/blog/article/first-look-ghajini-trailer-20081029has
chartbuster written all over it! The winning combo of Aamir and Rahman
does not disappoint! There's no doubt we'll be hearing the songs well into

2008-12-02 Thread Bergin Roy
to my knowledge i don't think, one can have a list of top 10 of ARR's songs.
Coz, each position will have 10 different songs and fight with each other for
the position.
If you ask for the first 5 positions for the sake of ranking, definitely more
than 60% of AR's songs will compete in my list. So atleast to me, there's no
such list within AR's compositions.

Yes, I stand corrected. I got it mixed up with Muzhumathi, which was
Jashn-E-Bahaara, and sung by Srinivas.

I preferred Sonu and Madhushree in In Lamhon Ke Daaman Me...the
lyrics in Tamil somehow didn't flow and Sonu sounded just tooo good.

the

some

of
instruments in the song lyrics itself, and make it sound
different.
  It was
he who suggested the use of words of instruments like Thavil

Rahman Sir wanted some sort of a discotheque type of a song. He

   *Elay Elay – Sakkarakatti *

It was Rahman Sir's idea for the entire lyrics for the song. The
  theme of
the song was to picturise a group of boys aged about 8 – 10

grow up, and to highlight on their friendship. Earlier, I had
  written

[arr] I’ll be in the US for SdM's promotion - ARR

2008-12-02 Thread rahmanfever
Music director A.R. Rahman, who has given the music for Danny
Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, has used the controversial chartbuster
Choli ke peeche kya hai as a part of the film's soundtrack and says
it fitted the mood of the movie.

  [http://www.khaleejtimes.com/images/blast-1208.jpg] The song
fitted the mood of the film. It represents that period in the early
1990s. The colour, the swirl and the frenetic pace - so I've
re-recorded it in the same two voices, Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun, though
in a totally re-worked form, Rahman said.

Pyarelal composed the song with his late partner Lamxmikant for Subhash
Ghai's 1993 film Khalnaayak and it was picturised on Madhuri Dixit.

Besides the background score, Rahman has done four songs in Slumdog
Millionaire.

I've collaborated with rap artiste Maya. We co-wrote a song
called Oh saya. She wrote the English lyrics. There's also a version
of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's Aaj ki raat in the soundtrack.

The film's soundtrack is being launched after the film's release
on December 12.

Asked about the delayed release, Rahman said: As usual we took a
little more time on it than we thought we needed to produce the album
properly.

The film is Rahman's second big Western film score after Shekhar
Kapoor's The Golden Age.

But that was a period film... a genre that I've been
unconsciously associated with the most. Slumdog... is contemporary,
he said.

Rahman is also happy about the movie's success at international film
festivals.

They released it on a small scale and are gradually increasing the
prints. Slumdog Millionaire releases in America next month. I'll be
in the US for the promotion, he said.

Slumdog Millionaire, based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's
rags-to-riches novel QA, stars Anil Kapoor and Dev Patel. The year has
been great for Rahman with hits like Jodhaa Akbar and Jaane Tu...Ya
Jaane Na.

I've worked with three generations of directors and in as many
continents. I can tell what they like and not like. Working with Abbas
Tyrewala in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na was a rewarding experience.
