It's becoz 'Kaisi hai yeh' is an Artist's dream song, he (Akshaye)
dreams about creating different paintings by nature. Really what a
poetry by J.Akthar and mindblowing rahmanish sound themes by SEL.
Dil Chahta hai remains one of my favourite non-rahman album, it's
like grand debute album for SEL like Roja for Rahman.

Also yesterday I was watching SaReGaMa in Zee TV, all songs rendered
were of Rahman's. These days most of Rahman's songs are performed in
this programme, and singer's work hard to recreate magic of
Rahman..!! And at end Judges Shankar M., Himesh, Pritam, Aadesh all
say hats off to Rahman and not singer!! That's the "one man army"
power of Rahman :)

[arr] [Semi-ARR] ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

2008-12-06 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

The Indian Express, December 7, 2008

A new book reveals the life and worth of the anonymous musicians who made
Bollywood’s golden melodies ¦ amrita dutta MUCH BEFORE R.D. BURMAN, COMPOSERS
WERE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR GLOBAL SOUNDS— AND THE MUSICIANS WHO COULD HELP FIND
THEM
I n 1977? a man in a ridiculous top hat burst out of an Easter egg as Kishore
Kumar trilled, “Myname-is-An-thony-Gon-saal-ves”. The movie was a hit and
Amitabh Bachchan’s rap act entered the gallery of Bollywood golden moments. But
who was Anthony Gonsalves? The answer lies in Majorda, a village in Goa, where
Gonsalves lives with the memories of the years (1943-1965) he spent in Mumbai’s
film industry, making and teaching music. A violinist who taught Pyarelal
Sharma, one half of the famous Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo of composers, Gonsalves
worked as an arranger for many film scores. He is also the starting point of
Gregory D. Booth’s new book Behind the Curtain:Making Music in Mumbai’s Film
Studios.

Gonsalves is at the heart of this book, says Booth, because he represents both
the anonymity of the musicians who played the signature music of Bollywood
films and their presence in our lives. Gonsalves’s name has instant recall (its
place in the song was Pyarelal’s ironic tribute) but his contribution remains
unacknowledged. The melodies performers like him made spilled over into our
lives and became markers of our memories while they remained—as so many told
the author—behind the curtain. This book, in some ways, is their curtain call.

Booth introduces you to Chic Chocolate (a.k.a Antonio Vaz), one of Bombay’s
leading jazz musicians in the 1940s who composer C. Ramchandra spotted at a
restaurant and hustled into the industry. The result of this musical encounter
was the first Latin percussion sounds in Bollywood . Listen to Cawas Lord
drumming up some fun on his bongo in Shola jo bhadke from the film Albela
(1951) to know what Chic and his band brought to the music. And if you can hear
the strains of the oboe in any score from the late 1950s to the mid1980s, you
are listening to Lallu Ram Indorkar, the only oboist of the industry in that
period.

This is not the first time that Booth has turned his focus to India’s “hidden
or perhaps voiceless musicians.” His last book was Brass Baja: Stories From
theWorld of IndianWedding Bands,an exhaustive work on“another music tradition
that most Indians haven’t really thought about”. Booth teaches at the
University of Auckland and has been playing the tabla for 30 years now—he was a
student of Zakir Hussain. He embarked on this book because he wanted to know
“more about the process of music making in Mumbai. “It seemed best to ask the
musicians,” he says.

Behind the Curtain is an oral history of the industry from the 1930s till the
late 1990s and includes interviews with numerous musicians, composers,
arrangers and engineers. Booth marks out three distinct phases. From the 1930s
to 1950, musicians were salaried employees of film studios. From 1950 till the
1990s was the time of the Old Bollywood, when independent producers financed
films and musicians worked as freelancers. They were paid by the hour—by the
producer and not the composers who enrolled them.

This was the time of the large film orchestras, when as many as 100 musicians
playing instruments as varied as the sitar and the maracas, the drums and the
accordion, recorded a song with the playback singers “at a single take”. As
music composers grew in clout, their orchestras grew larger and so did the
costs.

Booth takes us to an industry humming with different sounds—and identities. As
the film industry consolidated itself in Bombay, the city by the sea became the
destination for many musicians—and the host to an experiment in
multiculturalism. The trickle from Calcutta included not just composers like
Salil Chaudhuri and Hemant Kumar but saxophone player ManohariSingh and cellist
Sanjoy Chakravarty. One of the largest groups of musicians were Goan
Christians—men like Gonsalves and violinist Jerry Fernandes who entered the
industry in the late 1940s as it offered better financial returns than a career
in jazz and military bands. Taught since childhood to read and notate music,
they became indispensable to music directors like Naushad, Ramchandra and
Shankar-Jaikishen who were looking to recreate the sound of orchestras that
Hollywood films resounded with. The musicians were a bridge between two musical
traditions—the Indian melodic one and the
Western sound that revolved around harmonies and orchestration.

Somewhere in the middle of Booth’s fascinating book, the notion that one R.D.
Burman opened the doors of Bollywood music rooms to Western music gets badly
bruised. If Burman found Louis Banks at the Blue Fox restaurant in Kolkata in
the 1970s, Ramchandra had done that years ago with his overture to Chic
Chocolate. Arrangers like Anthony Gonsalves, Kersi

blend these two aspects of his music these days compared to the past,
as much as I enjoy his music today too.

Why do they put two titles for the same film/ album. It becomes

I think one was the Chinese translated name (wohe) and the other for the

2008-12-06 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
you are right. may be it is because it has a ghazal like melody or
that of old era songs that it sounds like an old song. at least now
after visiting all ARR songs for comparison i know that it is not a
stale ARR song.

or any other free mp3 player that plays only the audio of flv files

Good that you mentioned that song. It is indeed a rare lovely song of
current days that establishes that melody is still very much alive. I
like it a lot.

I am listening to that and finding one noticeable thing that though the
song is having positive, happy lyrics, still the mood of the song is not
reflecting that happiness. The song is quite contained and is rendered
quite maturedly, somewhat "with indifference to the happiness" so much
that if you don't pay attention to the exact words in lyrics, and go
with just the feeling conveyed, you might end up thinking it to be a sad
"separation type" song.

I wonder why and how that effect was brought in that song.

[arr] there is one great track — Jai Ho

2008-12-06 Thread Vithur
Slumdog Millionaire boasts of one standout track from A R Rahman, Jai Ho
while most of the other tracks are simply background scores that would have
to be enjoyed with the film.

This film by Danny Boyle is already making waves internationally and is all
set to be a frontrunner at the Oscars this year. Another reason for some of
the hype it is garnering is on account of A R Rahman's music who
incidentally has had a prolific year with four releases already this year.
Not all of the 13 (yes there are that many!) tracks are great but in the
framework of the film, they promise to pack a punch.

Slumdog Millionaire's standout song is undoubtedly Jai Ho, a rousing melody,
in Sukhwinder Singh's striking voice. The opening background music (BGM)
with its middle-eastern strings instantly leads you to believe that you're
in for something special. The track's high-pitched tone (and Singh scales
these 'highs with silken smooth ease) against a profusion of beats makes
this an instant chartbuster. Every time the opening line, 'Jai Ho' is sung,
it leaves a stirring impact and one can only imagine what an important
moment this could be for the film.

The next striking song here is Ringa Ringa, where Rahman does his own
version of the raunchy Choli Ke Peeche to a heady effect. One senses the
music composer's attempt to weave in a certain 'Mumbaiya' feel to the album
to go with the theme of the film. Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun get together
again to serve a suitably generic and massy number.

These are really the only two major songs, if you leave out an English
number called Dreams On Fire - soothing but very standard stuff.

Keeping with the international nature of the film, the album brims with
several interesting situational music pieces. While Latika's Theme is a
soft, humming piece from Suzanne D. Mello, Millionaire is a faced-paced
track with an on-the-run feel. O Saya has A R Rahman's voice interspersed
with the rapacious sounds of a running train. He goes into vigorous, fusion
music with Liquid Dance and Mausam And Escape. The latter one — with its
santoor and sitar strings — has a distinct classical flavour and one expects
this to be very effective along with the film. There's also Don's
scintillating Aaj Ki Raat included without any changes.

International track Paper Planes doesn't click. But the opening of its remix
version is stunner. The rest is just about passable. In any case, as we
said, not all these tracks are exceptional enough to be stand alone ones.
Riots and Gangsta Blues you wouldn't be revisiting much, unless they make an
impression in the film.

To sum up, there is one great track — Jai Ho. As for the rest — enjoy it
with the film.

Right.

Main albeli is another song that is a proof that video/ storyline go
together with the songs. When I heard that song before seeing the movie,
I found it so odd, not-arr-standard and all the BS.

And then I saw the movie and the song got its perspective. It fell in
the place where a 1940s song should be there, though 1940 music was
still quite different and banal in terms of recording techniques and
arrangements that were available those days (Remember Rattan, Shahjahan,
Andaz, Anmol Ghadi, Mahal music?). Still, by ARR's standard, this song
is much, much, much more 1947-ish than Kisna song or 1947Earth songs or
even Mangal Pandey songs.

And, the story line that the son finds an old movie clip in which his
mother had acted and sang in her youth had added a superb emotional
touch to the song and I had started liking it.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE surpasses JODHAA AKBAR in Overseas
http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/08/dec/06-slumdog-millionaire-surpasses-jodhaa-akbar-in-overseas-120804.asp
Danny Boyle's acclaimed hit SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE has reached $3.8 million at
the North American box office surpassing the $3.4 million of the Hrithik
Roshan–Aishwarya Rai epic JODHAA AKBAR to become the highest grossing Indian
movie of 2008.

The Fox Searchlight release has done this after only three weeks in theaters
while playing in only 49 locations. Released in February, JODHAA AKBAR
played much wider in 125 theaters and earned its total gross over nine
weeks. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE will continue to open in more theaters nationwide
throughout the month of December and will see its box office gross continue
to climb. Though financed in the U.K., the film's setting, story, and
characters are all Indian.

This past week has seen SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE add to its impressive list of
industry accolades. It won three British Independent Film Awards for Best
Film, Best Director, and the Most Promising Newcomer prize for 18–year–old
actor Dev Patel. The song 'Paper Planes' by MIA which is featured on the
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE soundtrack earned a prestigious Grammy Award nomination
for Record of the Year. And lastly the film was named Best Picture of the
Year by the National Board of Review which also honored it in two other
categories – Best Breakthrough Performance by an Actor for Patel and Best
Adapted Screenplay (tie) for Simon Beaufoy.

[arr] Yuvvraaj - Film Review

2008-12-06 Thread AR Rahman The Boss

A film worth watching in 1980s, but not in 2008's. The story has been written
in a way suited for early 80s. That is the initial verdict after watching the
entire film.

Deven (played by Salman Khan) is a chorus singer in Prague. He is seen paired
with Anushka (played by Katrina Kaif) who is appearing as playing a cello.
Anushka is deeply in love with Deven, who is pursuing a bright career as a
musician (but all his zest is not shown). Deven is surviving the career just
because of Anushka.

Anushka's dad Banton (Boman Irani) is a doctor who is introduced by burning
Deven's picture. He hates her daugter's relationship with Deven (because he is
not rich). Anushka is pressing her father for her marriage with deven as she
needs her father's consent for that and Deven is stressing her for a marriage.

In one of the deviations Deven gets the news of his rich father's demise (from
a policeman who asks his fathers name to fill up a chargesheet, and delivers
his fathers death news) and Deven starts for getting his share in property.
Deven starts for his home after challenging to Banton that he will be
billionaire in just 40 days, if not he can choose not to accept him as
son-in-law.

Deven has two brothers Danny (played by Zayed Khan) and Gyanesh (played by Anil
Kapoor). Danny is a spoilt brother and Gyanesh is a mentally challenged
brother. His father in his will as announced by Sikandar Mirza (played by
Mithun Chakraborthy) says that his property share's majority goes to Gyanesh.
Danny and Deven are seen then paired for lions share of the property.

Deven brings Gyanesh to Prague. Anushka makes Gyanesh sing for her and instills
confidence in him (Though Gyanesh is mentally challenged he can write musical
notes of his own and sing well, what the heck!). Danny accompanies Deven to
Prague not believing Deven to the full.

Danny is seen then thrown out of his club for not paying his dues, and he is
being rescued by his two brothers. From now on Danny is seen a changed
good-brother. The three brothers are then united.

Banton is a friend of Sikandar Mirza who narrates the incidents to him
regularly (as Banton says). In the climax, Gyanesh is made to be mistaken that
his brothers are just roaming around him for money. A plot to kill Gyanesh by
his relatives (for war of money) and to make the brothers culprit goes void.
And in the end the three brothers unite, and Banton accepts Deven as his
son-in-law.

Seems that Subhash Ghai has completely lost the way of storytelling. He with
his age old scriptwriters Sachin Bhowmik and Kamlesh Pandey have completely
failed in delivering a good story and script.

The only theme which glues you with the theatre's chairs is its music. Yes. The
unsung hero of this movie is none other than A.R.Rahman. His music seems to
have generated so power that it mesmirizes most of the times. It is another
'Taal' in making but left without a proper script. If this were a right script
it would have been a correct mix of silent rhythmic and at the same time
vibrant cinema. The music is so fresh and authenticated that it is the only
point of watching the entire movie. Also Gulzar saab's lyrics go hand-in-hand
with the music.

A.R.Rahman also appears in a guestrole in the end of the movie where all the
crew of the movie are shown.

[arr] Paper Planes - Grammy nomination

2008-12-06 Thread : Avinash :
Paper Planes by MIA has been nominated for "Record of the year" @
Grammy awards. Does Rahman have any credit over this song??

Re: [ARR] First song composed by ARR

2008-12-06 Thread danny
Hi Friends i've seen that episode in which Late 'Baranikkavu
Shivakumar' said this, but we can't say Rahman composed it, His father
Late R K Shekar was inspired by the tune Little Rahman lazily played
on the keyboard (remmember Rahman was just six year old).

The composer is Rahmans Father R K Shekar itself.

Its a fact that in Kerala R K Shekar and his compositions got more
recognition only after Rahman became popular.

[arr] A.R. Rahman Slums It With M.I.A.

2008-12-06 Thread Vithur
Unless you're obsessed with Bollywood (or you're a regular reader of this
very
blog),
chances are that your iPod isn't loaded up with A.R. Rahman tunes. But even
without your help, he's managed to sell more than 200 million albums in his
sixteen-year career — approximately as many as Madonna has in twice as long.
But here in the States, he takes second billing on this ominously driving
song from his soundtrack to *Slumdog Millionaire*, after his moderately
popular collaborator, some musician named M.I.A. No matter how well you know
their names, though, the pair are a great choice for the film; Rahman's
protean ability to compose any style of music meshes well with M.I.A.'s own
eclectic tastes, creating a track that feels as at-home on the subway as it
does on the subcontinent.

[arr] A. R. Rehman have never gone wrong

2008-12-06 Thread Vithur
Facts about the music of Ghajini :

   - A. R. Rehman and Prasoon Joshi team together after a very successful
collaboration in musical hits like Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par!
   - The combination of Aamir Khan and A. R. Rehman have never gone wrong
   except in Mangal Pandey!
   - For the first time Rehman uses Sonu Nigam's voice as backing vocals in
   the opening song - Guzarish!

One of the most eagerly awaited score of the year is that of Ghajini! I had
my apprehensions with the score, primarily because it is a remake of a
Southern flick by the same name and secondly, due to the heavy action flick
it promises to be, which leaves practically no scope for good music! But
overall after hearing all the songs, I am pretty satisfied with the score.
Now let's straightway come to analyse the songs individually!

1. Guzarish (Javed Ali, Guest Vocals - Sonu Nigam)
The first song of the album has a nice romantic feel to it with good lyrics
and some very clean singing! The best part of the song is that Rehman has
not let his arrangements take over the composition, and that helps the song
in a big way. After a very long time, the singing and the lyrics create the
mood rather than the composition itself. Sonu Nigam's alaap between the two
antaras helps the listener get into the mood of the song.
A very impressive output from Rehman with equally good lyrics by Prasoon
Joshi and superb singing by Javed Ali!

2. Aye Bachchu (Suzanne)
A song that wants to say that life is fun! Intentions are cool, and the
lyrics are pretty neat, but why Rehman just goes overboard with the
arrangements when it comes to fast numbers? The arrangements are so over the
top that it borders on showing disrespect to the lyrics written for the
song! You have to listen to the song carefully to just get the lyrics! And
this complain with Rehman is not only for this number, but for most of the
fast numbers he has composed in the past! This song was literally crying for
Alisha Chinoy, she would have taken this number to altogether different
level!
Anyway, the song is okay, and could have been better with some spaced out
arrangement and of course, Alisha Chinoy!

3. Kaise Mujhe (Benny Dayal, Shreya Ghoshal)
Ah, what a song! The lyrics are absolutely great! Prasoon Joshi has mixed
the simplicity of Anand Bakshi with the poetry of Gulzar to create one of
the best romantic number of the season! You can feel your heart skipping a
beat when you hear Benny Dayal and Shreya Ghoshal playing with the words of
Prasoon Joshi in the ambience created by Rehman! Everthing's just so right
with the song, that you dont feel betrayed as a listener. So just put on the
song and let yourself fall in love with love all over again!
Excellent - that's what this song is! Go for it!

4. Behka (Karthik)
The song has loungy feel to it and that relaxed atmosphere is ably created
by the arrangement of Rehman! I particularly loved the use of saxophone in
this song. The singing is okay, the lyrics not as good as Kaise Mujhe, but
still decent enough to pass muster! Overall the song has an interesting feel
to it, and the credit for that fully goes to Mr. A. R. Rehman!
An interesting song, will keep the listener engaged!

5. Lattoo (Shreya Ghoshal)
This song has a Latin feel to it, and the lyrics once again are very
unconventional! Never heard an actress singing on screen - Lattoo Lattoo
Main Uspe Lattoo! Shreya Ghoshal singing Lattoo was so cute, that I just
fell for the song! Hats of to Prasoon Joshi for bringing a new word to the
limited dictionary of lyrics of Hindi Cinema Song! Rehman has done justice
to the lyrics, and I am pleasantly surprised, because this shows that he has
adapted himself to the requirements of a Hindi film song.
A very cute song, you will enjoy it!

3. Kaise Mujhe (Instrumental)
The instrumental version of my favorite song in this album is the nicest way
that could have been possible to end the album. I am pleased that there are
no remixes in this album, and that is a welcome change!
Nice way to close the album!

I am happy with this album, and the biggest cause for celebration for me was
the lyrics! Prasoon Joshi with this album has shown that things for him are
definitely bright in the future! Another remarkable thing was the chemistry
between A. R. Rehman and Prasoon Joshi! The understanding between them is
evident in all the songs of Ghajini! I sincerely hope and pray that this
collaboration entertains us in many more scores in the future! The music of
Ghajini has more plusses than minusses. Grab it, and feel warm in the cold
month of December.

Rating : Very Good!

Bye for now!

[arr] A Request to Film producers

2008-12-06 Thread Vithur
Dear Film producers of ARR Films,

I make a sincere request to all of you to give DVD / VCD Rights for the
films that you are producing with ARR as the Music Director. I know I cant
ask for the BGMs. Thats Ok. with God Grace, I can rip them myself, but I
very badly neeed VCDs or DVDs of movies done by ARR.

I am deeply frustrated searching for Uzhavan VCD or DVD, Kabhi Na Kabhi VCD,
Gangmaster, Nippuravva everywhere. Hopefully, one day I will get all these.

These movies were totally unheard of , and its a pity that ARR's wonderful
BGMs have gone unnoticed, or unheard of even by fan members.

In this regard, I must say, that Dir. Shankar and Dir Maniratnam movies get
DVD rights and all their movies so far have been released in DVDs also.
Producer K.T. Kunjomohan who produced movies like Kadhalan, Gentleman,
Kadhal desam, Ratchagan must also be thanked, as even though the movies
bombed ( Ratchagan), we have the DVDs of these movies.

Subhash Ghai movies have also got DVD rights. Thanks to him for that.

If any of the members know any producers, Pls take this request to them.

[arr] Rousing rhythm... Jai Ho !

2008-12-06 Thread rahmanfever

Rousing rhythm !

Slumdog Millionaire boasts of one standout track from A R Rahman, Jai Ho
while most of the other tracks are simply background scores that would
have to be enjoyed with the film.

This film by Danny Boyle is already making waves internationally and is
all set to be a frontrunner at the Oscars this year. Another reason for
some of the hype it is garnering is on account of A R Rahman's music
who incidentally has had a prolific year with four releases already this
year. Not all of the 13 (yes there are that many!) tracks are great but
in the framework of the film, they promise to pack a punch.

Slumdog Millionaire's standout song is undoubtedly Jai Ho, a rousing
melody, in Sukhwinder Singh's striking voice. The opening background
music (BGM) with its middle-eastern strings instantly leads you to
believe that you're in for something special. The track's
high-pitched tone (and Singh scales these `highs with silken smooth
ease) against a profusion of beats makes this an instant chartbuster.
Every time the opening line, `Jai Ho' is sung, it leaves a
stirring impact and one can only imagine what an important moment this
could be for the film.

The next striking song here is Ringa Ringa, where Rahman does his own
version of the raunchy Choli Ke Peeche to a heady effect. One senses the
music composer's attempt to weave in a certain `Mumbaiya'
feel to the album to go with the theme of the film. Alka Yagnik and Ila
Arun get together again to serve a suitably generic and massy number.

These are really the only two major songs, if you leave out an English
number called Dreams On Fire - soothing but very standard stuff.

Keeping with the international nature of the film, the album brims with
several interesting situational music pieces. While Latika's Theme
is a soft, humming piece from Suzanne D. Mello, Millionaire is a
faced-paced track with an on-the-run feel. O Saya has A R Rahman's
voice interspersed with the rapacious sounds of a running train. He goes
into vigorous, fusion music with Liquid Dance and Mausam And Escape. The
latter one — with its santoor and sitar strings — has a distinct
classical flavour and one expects this to be very effective along with
the film. There's also Don's scintillating Aaj Ki Raat included
without any changes.

International track Paper Planes doesn't click. But the opening of
its remix version is stunner. The rest is just about passable. In any
case, as we said, not all these tracks are exceptional enough to be
stand alone ones. Riots and Gangsta Blues you wouldn't be revisiting
much, unless they make an impression in the film.

To sum up, there is one great track — Jai Ho. As for the rest —
enjoy it with the film.

You are right about the arrangement, which was apt for those period. Few film
songs during those period had this arab feel to it...

I am pointing to the june itself .

The tune in the middle part for "Mai albeli" song leads to the "Jao ho" song
and vice versa.

Zubeida is probably one of the top 10 ARR albums and thans to ARR for reminding
