i think a win would be spoken for a very long time when compared to a nomination. agreed that one should be nominated to get an award and nomination is critical. but its definitely not a point to stop and say enough. nomination (one or two) can take u to the stage but wont give u an oscar. one should WIN to get an oscar or any other award. [arr] Bollywood fraternity hails Rahman at Slumdog Millionaire premiere
Home http://businessofcinema.com/Headline Newshttp://www.businessofcinema.com/newsarchive.php?catid=5 Bollywood fraternity hails Rahman at Slumdog Millionaire premiere Story By:HETAL ADESARAupdated on:23/01/09 MUMBAI: It was 'Jai Ho' for music director AR Rahman at the Mumbai premiere of Slumdog Millionaire. While he was unable to attend the premiere as he was in Chennai giving the final touches to the musical score of Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6, the cast and crew of the movie and almost the entire film industry thoroughly missed him at the premiere. Speaking to Businessofcinema.com director Danny Boyle says, I am very excited with the ten nominations that the movie has got at the Oscars. Apart from that, I am most happy for Rahman who has got three nominations for the movie. It is unbelievably exciting. Veteran filmmaker, Yash Chopra added, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie and I congratulate Rahman for his Oscar nominations. It is truly a great achievement for India. Actor Anil Kapoor says, We are really happy today and we wish Rahman was also with us right now to share this moment together. He has made us all very proud. Actor Hrithik Roshan, who was at the premiere with his wife Suzanne, says, I am very happy for Rahman and wish him all the very best for the Oscars. He has truly done us all proud. Preity Zinta says, I congratulate Rahman for his Oscar nominations. I'm sure he will shine bright at the Awards. Speaking to Businessofcinema.com from Bangalore on Rahman's nominations, actor R Madhavan says, I am going to be seeing the film tomorrow. I think it is about time A R is accepted and admired globally. When queried by Businessofcinema.com on what his expectations were from the Oscars and BAFTA awards, Boyle says, Oh I am not going to think about it. I have no expectations and I shall take it as it comes. For the time being I am just going to think about the movie and the beautiful journey so far. I will begin thinking about the next project by the end of February. Until then I am going to take a break. Also present at the premiere were Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu,... Subhash Ghai, Boney Kapoor, Sridevi, Sonam Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Ness Wadia, Sushmita Sen, Ranvir Shorey, Ketan Mehta, Ila Arun, Ken Ghosh, Sanjay Kapoor, Jiah Khan, Genelia D'Souza, Padmini Kohlapuri, Ishita Arun, amongst a host of other celebrities. Post the premiere of the movie, the cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire headed to the JW Marriot's club Enigma to shake a leg. Clearly there's enough and more reason to celebrate!! All eyes are now on 22 February when the 81st Academy Awards are slated to take place. Will Rahman do India proud? From the looks of it, it certainly seems so!! [arr] We should do whatever good we can and keep going - ARR to Singer Srinivas
Fm Rainbow Singer Srinivas ( Srini ) Hi Rahman!. This is singer Srinivas here . If I am here as a playback singer, it is definitely only because of Rahman. In fact, I got the interest and yearning to compose only because of Rahman. So, most of the credit to whatever I am today goes to Rahman. These are not just mere words. I think the scene changed completely in 1992, when Rahman came on to the music scene. A lot of new talents started coming in. If you take any composer today, he will have a 100% influence of Rahman. That's because, every keyboard player is a big big rahman fan without an exception. So, I am very very happy to be associated with him, and if I have a position in the Industry today, its because of Rahman. I am really really thankful to him. I have sung a lot many songs for him. Kaiyil Mithakkum Kanava Nee – Ratchagan In the line Unnai Mattum Sumandhu Nadanthal ……….. , he didn't compose for that line. There were certain old tunes which were existing. As I was singing the previous lines of that song, he suddenly composed the tune for these lines and he told me the tune, and I had to sing it immediately. The openeness with which he does things is something remarkable. When we achieve little success itself, it grows up on our head. He has reached unimaginable heights of success as far as music is concerned ( especially somebody from the film music scene ). After tasting this much of success, how does he remain so rooted ?. How does he remain so simple ?. I want to know from Rahman, as to how do you handle so much of success, and how do you remain so humble ? ARR :- I think….. Srini… Are you complaining, or keeping ice on me ( He laughs ) …Ok Srini. I think its important for all of us know that none of us are immortals. This life is like a station , isn't it ?. Anyhow, we have to go to the next station. So, it's a journey with a limited time. So, there would be no use in jumping. So, we should do whatever good we can, and keep going. This is the philosophy. I have seen the tragic death of my father and grand mother at a very young age. I don't feel that this life is so important. At the same time, we shouldn't be doing something bad to people, and should strive to do good. We should try to bring love in art. This would be the underlying fact. So, thank you for the question. -- regards, Vithur

[arr] A. R. Rahman: On a song and a prayer
A. R. Rahman: On a song and a prayer Kaveree Bamzai January 23, 2009 On a song and a prayer Rahman at his Kodambakkam home in Chennai Rahman at his Kodambakkam home in Chennai Kareema Begum, formerly known as Kasturi, is a slight woman, clad in a shiny blue zari-edged sari, every square centimetre of her worn fingers studded with diamonds, her sparkling toothy smile belying the struggles of her past. A single mother since 1976, she kept her four children together by renting out the two keyboards her husband, music composer R.K. Shekhar, had left her when he died of stomach cancer. Times were tough and her prodigiously talented son, then known as A.S. Dileep Kumar, was barely 11 when he started performing in public. It got to the point where I had to go take him out of school every day to take him to performances, she recalls, speaking in Tamil, translated rapidly by Dileep Kumar a.k.a. Allah Rakha Rahmans imperious 12-year-old daughter. Hitting the high notes The Golden Globe has only reiterated Rahmans genius Roja (1992) Mani Ratnam takes a chance on a youngster whose coffee ad jingle he likes. Rangeela (1995) Ram Gopal Varma introduces Rahman to Hindi films. His legend grows. Vande Mataram (1997) Maa tujhe salaam redefines nationalism. Flag waving suddenly becomes cool. Bombay dreams (2002) Thanks to Shekhar Kapur, Andrew Lloyd Webber asks him to compose for the musical. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Danny Boyle meets him in Chennai in June, Rahman composes the score at his home in London in July. He was in Class X. He told me I should either let him study or let him perform. We had to survive. He had to drop out of school, recalls Kareema. I will always regret it. What kept her going was what gives 43-year-old Rahman strength even today. Prayer and work. Influenced by a Sufi mystic, Karimullah Shah Qadri, in whom Kareema found solace as she battled her husbands illness, she converted the family to Islam in 1987. That faith drives her son today, with everything from the door to his recording studio to his mobile number bearing the holy numbers 786. And it is that faith that has seen him grow from the boy who played in several orchestras for a living to now being the man who has conquered the capital of the entertainment world, becoming the first Indian to win the Golden Globe for his score in Slumdog Millionaire. Rahmans world is as multicultural as it is multiplying. A state-of-the-art commercial studio started in 2005 forms the hub, a music conservatory with 40 fulltime foundation students and 50 preparatory students begun last year, is the realisation of a long-cherished dream. A newly launched music label allows him to give a platform to new talent. And his own work, usually composed at night while the world sleeps, in his private studio at his Kodambakkam home in Chennai, reaches newer heights. Rahman's mother could afford to send him for guitar lessons only after his elder sister Raihanah had to drop out Rahman's mother could afford to send him for guitar lessons only after his elder sister Raihanah had to drop out What makes him the finest among our musicians (who can go from a Meera bhajan to a Sufi Khwaja mere khwaja in Jodhaa Akbar) also distinguishes him as an Indian. A devout Muslim, his first public performance was in a church on the keyboard for his teacher, and for many, his best works remain the stirring rendition of Vande Mataram, the flag swaying in the wind in tandem with his hair. How does he do it? If Rahman is a true believer, who insists that every lyric should be like a prayer, so are those who work with him. Only their faith is in him. Most of them have been with him for over a decade, having known him much before Mani Ratnams Roja propelled him to national fame. Things you didnt know about Rahman * He sleeps from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting work only at 6 p.m. every day. * His mother could afford to send him to guitar lessons only after his elder sister Raihanah had to drop out. I didnt mind, she says. * His first public performance was at the age of 11 in a church where his master Jacob John had taken him. * He changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman on the credits of the soundtrack of Roja in 1992. * His first stop in any new city is either an electronic store where he likes to buy the latest equipment or a mosque. Noell James, former singer of many Rahman jingles, has worked with him for 22 years and been his manager ever since he can remember. T. Selvakumar, a former keyboard player who would source his instruments for him, is now the CEO of the KM Music Conservatory. Vijay Mohan Iyer, a friend for 14 years, now runs his music label. Deepak Gattani, introduced to him by singer Hariharan 16 years ago, handles his concert and endorsements. Liz Cook, formerly with the US Government, takes care of his film work. Are their people in Oscar board who are ARR fans? The way you guys are saying is like mayawati's party snatching a small share of votes that would make Congress loose and BJP win. I feel that for such a prestigious award, decision makers would rise above their personal likings and dislikings and would decide on the basis of the actual merits of the individual cases. So, it means there are no fixed ARR voters in there, and there would be no split as such. I personally think that nomination for 2 is more of an achievement than a win for 1. -- Rawat

[arr] Jeevie Review : SDM must watch
http://www.jeevimovie.com/dvd-slumdogmillionaire.html Cast: Dev Patel, Anil Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Saurabh Shukla, Freida Pinto, Ankur Vikal Director: Danny Boyle (Loveleen Tandan (co-director: India)) Music: AR Rehman Cinematography: Anthony Dod Mantle Editing: Chris Dickens Rating: Enetertainment Quotient: 70% Genre: Crime/Romance Runtime: 120 min MPAA rating: R Synopsis: Jamal (Dev Patel) is an orphan from the slums of Mumbai. He gets to attend the game show `who wants to be a millionaire' when he is 18. Surprisingly he starts giving the right answers till he gets into the final round. And all these questions have relevance to certain incidents happened in his life. The game show host and cops suspect that Jamal cheated in the show. The rest of the story is all about how he proves his innocence and wins his lady love that's been playing hide and seek with him since his childhood. Actors: The kids who did the roles of Salim, Jamal and Latika are adorable. They are the best in the film than the main leads. Among the notable Indian actors, Saurabh Shukla is the best. Ankur Vikal is excellent. Anil Kapoor is pretty natural as a wicked and biased host of the game show. After some point of time, we start hating him. Dev Patel is adequate. Irfan Khan played similar kind of roles earlier. Hence it is a cake walk for him. Story screenplay direction: The story of this film is adapted from a book Q A written by an Indian author Vikas Swaroop. It is an interesting story that has two parallel plots interwoven into a game show. Direction of the film is brilliant. The screenplay is extraordinary. This film combines both arts and commerce. It has a highly realistic treatment to it with an undercurrent box office winning formula. The following scenes are worth mentioning: 1. The cop chasing the kids in slums 2. Young Jamal jumping into shit pond to get an autograph of Amitabh. 3. Young Salim asking his boss for 50 rupees when his boss asks him to be professional. 4. Jamal acting as tour guide in Taj Mahal 5. Darshan to Ghanashyam scene 6. Jamal's conversation with the blind in which he comes to know about the photo on 100 dollar bill. 7. Salim taking the life of the guy who bothered him. 8. Jamal trying to steal chapati on a moving train 9. Jamal not choosing B as an answer for the penultimate question Commercial screenplay payoffs in the film (typical Indian): 1. Spaced flashback narration: It has three threads of game show, police interrogation and flashback simultaneously run. 2. Love story: Jamal loves Latika unconditionally. She goes missing from him. And he finds her. She changes hands and is used by many men. But he stills love her. And all ends well in the end. 3. Salim character: Salim is the elder brother of Jamal. He is protective of his brother, at the same time egoistic. He behaves selfish at times and finally becomes an admirable person. 4. Three Musketeers Thread: The beginning of the movie has a teacher telling the students about `Three Musketeers'. Jamal considers his brother, himself and Latika to be three musketeers. The final question in the game show is about the name of the third musketeer. It was a beautifully written thread. 5. Mental recall: Jamal is recognized by the blind boy, Latita and Salim at different points of life journey. 6. Biased host of the game show: The host of the game show is a biased man. He does not want Jamal to win. He goes to the extent of apprehending Jamal to the cops. Hence the last two questions in the game show give huge commercial pay off when Jamal nails the host with the right answers though he does not know if it's right. 7. Spirit of human triumph: Triumph is important than winning money. Hence he never backs out in the middle for money. Jamal risks it till the last round as it is all about the spirit of human triumph. Some of the unconvincing points: 1. Three Musketeers lesson in a school attended by slum boys. 2. Jamal not knowing about Gandhi's photo on Indian note. The debate of India being shown as a pathetic country in this film: When somebody is doing a film on a slum boy, it is bound to show the hard reality in slum areas. That does not mean that India has been projected in the wrong way. When somebody watched `City of God' (reviiew here) which shows the bad side of Brazil country, one expects it to be a poor country with little scope for improvement. But actually Brazil is one of the fastest growing economies in the world along with Russia, India and China (BRIC countries). India is not for the people who judge it by watching fictional movies. Hence, let's not bother about it. Other technical departments: Background score by AR Rehman is peppy and energetic (especially the beat scored by kids chasing scenes in the initial part of the movie). Cinematography is excellent. Editing is superb with no dull moment. This film shows Mumbai slums in a magnificent way.

[arr] Oscars not ultimate recognition - Amitabh Bachchan
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Oscars_not_ultimate_recognition_says_Bachchan/articleshow/4022389.cms AIPUR: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan on Friday said Oscar awards should not be considered as the ultimate recognition for artists, although he was glad that those working behind the scenes were finally getting their due credit. You people have taken the Oscar as the best recognition and award, Bachchan said when asked if there was dearth of good Indian movies as very few had managed to get into the Oscar race. They are great in their place and we are so in our place. It is not that Oscar awards are the ultimate recognition, he told an audience during the release of the book Bachchanalia at the Jaipur Literature Festival here. Oscar has its own place...we do not disrespect it If they wish to give us an Oscar they can do it...if not, it would be even better, he said. India cinema has always stood first, stands first, is the best, Oscar has its own place, Bachchan said at the interaction. However, he added he was happy that the artists who were working behind the scenes were finally getting their due recognition, also emphasizing the nomination of sound director Rasool Pookutty for an Oscar was also important, besides that of Rahman and Gulzar. It is encouraging when we see that the media, which conducts the film award ceremonies in India has started recognizing the worth of background artists. Rasool, a sound engineer from India being nominated for the Oscar awards is definitely wonderful news and makes me terribly happy for him, Bachchan said. Moreover, I hope that Rahman, who has already done India immensely proud brings back a second Oscar to the country, he said, a day after Indians bagged six Oscar nominations The 66-year-old legendary actor also chose to clarify his remarks over Danny Boyle's film Slumdog Millionaire that bagged 10 Oscar nominations. Bachchan said he believed the film was an artist's creative presentation and everyone had the right of expression. He clarified he had not in his blog said the film was negative in depicting the poverty of India. The words (criticizing the film) were not mine. In fact, in my blog I had analyzed some comments on the film put on my blog by the readers. I have since then spoken to both Anil Kapoor and Danny Boyle and clarified my position, Bachchan said. On why he did not attend a nomination function despite an invite from Anil Kapoor, he said he was busy and conveyed his good wishes and congratulations to the entire team of Slumdog Millionaire. Asked whether Indian movies were fulfilling the aspirations of viewers and reviewers abroad, Bachchan said he was very happy as Indian films were catering to amount 2.5 billion people. Look at cinema from the beginning, 50-70 years ago, it was not well respected...no one wanted to join the film line then, now Indian cinema has grown tremendously, enveloped all of us. Criticism and cynicism at the international level gives us a satisfaction of growing Indian cinema's standard. We are a pioneer in film creativity and talent is no way inferiorif given an opportunity, we can make brilliant films for foreign competition, he said. Indian movies have now got greater acceptability more and more movies are being screened in foreign countries like Japan, US and China, Bachchan said. Praising the 10 Oscar nominations for Slumdog Millionaire, Bachchan said Bhanu Athaiya, the costume designer of film Gandhi, was the first to get the Oscar award ...there are people who work behind the making of film... there was a time when they were not noticed... now even my make-up man could get any award one day,” he said. Describing cinema as a uniting medium, the actor said there was no better example of an integrated India than a cinema hall. On question of violence being increasingly depicted in Indian movies, he said the movies were only reflecting the reality. Movie is a strong medium of expression and creativity to depict what ever happening in the society. Bihar records the maximum crime but has less movie halls. Andhra Pradesh has the maximum movie theatres. It is the movies that keep communal harmony as people of all communities and religion sit together in the hall to watch a movie...where they laugh together, weep together...tell me how cinema is promoting violence, he asked. Asked whether Indian literature is moving in the right direction, Bachchan, who is son of renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, said, I do agree that the importance of written word — the great literature written in the past — is being forgotten. We not only need to revive the interest of young generation, but we require an instrument, ideas, inspiration and promote it. About how he has influenced son Abhishek as an artist, Bachchan said he shared more of a friendly rather than fatherly relationship with him and hoped Abhishek would imbibe the lessons of life from his experiences. It will play only on DVD/CD roms ( on computers). You need power dvd for example to play it. 5.1 is obviously better since it has discrete channels. However you need an appropriate sound card (5.1) and a 5.1 sound system to enjoy the discrete channelled output. [arr] Why A.R.Rahman deserves it for SDM score?
http://backgroundscore.blogspot.com/2009/01/why-arrahman-deserves-it-for-sdm-score.html I am really surprised by level of ignorance about movie background score as most of the media reports mentioned that A.R.Rahman won the golden globe for ‘Jai Ho’ song. The irony is that it is exactly not for what Rahman got the golden globe; in fact the song wasn’t even nominated in the best original song category (ofcourse to compensate two songs have been nominated for Oscar). On the other side, though unanimously everyone is happy about an Indian winning a golden globe and especially Rahman winning it, most weren’t sure about whether Rahman deserves it for Slumdog Millionaire score. And I am sure they will be unsure even if he wins the Oscar. And all those who claim so, either haven’t seen the movie or have seen it on pirated DVD or internet. If you aren’t someone who is interested in the finer aspects of background score, it is hard to get its real impact while watching on such illegal means where the experience isn’t a complete one. These finer aspects of a movie like the background score can be best experienced, understood and appreciated only while watching the movie, the way it is meant to be where all your attention is just on the movie, its characters and their emotions. As I already have mentioned, there is no bigger sin than reviewing the music on an Original Soundtrack CD before even watching the movie. The purpose of the music in that CD is not to entertain while you shit at home with an iPod on your ears but to engage, involve and suck you into its narrative when you are watching a movie. In that process, if the music finds a life of its own, it is just a bonus. This is not to mean that the Slumdog Millionaire score doesn’t work without the visuals but I try to emphasize that its emotional impact is much higher with the visuals. And everyone easily arrive at a conclusion that as it all sounded so fresh and unique for a western crowd, it appealed to them more compared to other clichéd (by their standards) orchestral scores and so it won.. Of course there is some truth in it, but nobody realizes that how it all would have easily gone wrong. (Satyajit Ray’s golden words come to my mind at this moment– “An easy way to ruin a perfectly good film is to apply an unsuitable music to it”). A.R.Rahman and Danny Boyle are taking a big risk by using such a loud score in a movie which is primarily made for a western audience and both would be quite aware of the fact that western crowd don’t like such loud score. But they cleverly pulled it off by filling the soundtrack not with loud orchestral outbursts (and there are quite a lot of such moments in the movie which would easily tipoff any ordinary creator to go for such a score) but with loudness of Indian classical exotica and eclectic electronica. And their big risk has paid off and how. After watching the movie, I realized that it couldn’t get any better than what Rahman did and no one could have done it in the way Rahman has done it. Even if it was done by someone else, it would have gone as a purely functional background score which doesn’t harm the movie and which doesn’t add anything special by itself to the movie. But Rahman’s score bombards the audience with its high energy, unique sound and its symphony with the visuals is just so perfect. This is an attempt to make people understand that we all can be proud about A.R.Rahman’s victory not just because he is an Indian, but also because his work in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is truly worthy of it. If you haven’t seen the movie yet - spoilers ahead. Those who complain that ‘O Saya’ was too loud for a routine chase scene, have either seen just that one scene in the trailer of the movie on the net or completely missed the real essence of the scene. The complete chase sequence between the kids and the police is an excuse to showcase the colour, energy, the spirit and the vibrancy in those narrow by lanes of slums in Bombay. In true Indian film tradition, it is a hero introduction song of the movie, and the hero here being Bombay and the music more than serves its purpose with thumping train rhythms and rocking guitars. The ‘Riots Theme’ which we hear in the soundtrack CD doesn’t have one main layer of a tension filled oscillating melody (played on harp, harpsichord, piano or plain keyboard, I can’t say) that is used in the movie. Rahman also hits some deep piano chords in between to heighten the tension further. For almost same kind of scene, 13 years back Rahman scored similar percussive score for riots scene in Maniratnam’s Bombay but this one is edgier and suits the pace of the sequence well. It is not that Rahman just composed some piece with layers of rhythms and e-sounds and just played it on the background in the scene, if you carefully listen, as the main rhythmic layer proceeds with Jamal and Salim running around the streets, Rahman introduces one more rhythm layer and makes it louder as
[arr] Thoda sa dard tu
what an expression !!! when he is singing this line.. Amazing composition gives the right expression of the pain.. again he takes a pop feel while singing thoda sa resham... kabhi toh... I have made these lines as my ring tone. Sir you are way ahead beyond limits in thoughts. What we feel are blessed to listen.

[arr] Celebrations at Jaipur literature fest for 'Slumdog..', Gulzar feted
Jaipur (IANS): The spirit of bonhomie at the Jaipur Literature Festival turned into celebratory cheer Thursday evening after the announcement that the movie Slumdog Millionaire, based on career diplomat-author Vikas Swarup's novel Q and A, had bagged 10 Oscar nominations. Though the author, who was present at the festival Wednesday, had left for Mumbai for the premiere of the movie Friday, lyricist Gulzar, who has penned the lyrics for Jai ho that has been nominated for best original song for the 81st Annual Academy Awards, became the hero of the evening. The posse of writers, publishers and the large contingent of representatives from the publishing industry across the world erupted into cheer and uncorked bottles of champagne as a spokesperson announced the nominations on stage. It is a historic moment for me. This is my first international recognition. I am so happy for both composer A.R. Rehman, who has won three nominations and Vikas, the beaming lyricist, clad in spotless white, told the media post-dinner. Gulzar, a close friend of the director-general of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations Pavan Varma, arrived in Jaipur Wednesday to attend a special session on poetry with Varma. My daughter and her husband rang me from Mumbai in the evening to convey the news. It feels wonderful. But I am especially happy that A.R. Rehman has won three nominations. He is the best thing that has happened to contemporary Indian music - his arrival has changed the music scene forever, Gulzar told the media. According to him, there were many more people who were behind his nomination. For instance, the director of the movie Danny Boyle - without him the nominations would have been impossible. Certain compositions gelled so well with the shots, he said. The lyricist met writer Vikas Swarup Wednesday. We were discussing it. I did not expect a nomination for myself, but I had pinned my hopes on Rehman. He is very dear to me and has made the country proud, he said. When quizzed about the protests against the movie in Mumbai, Gulzar said he did not want to be drawn into a controversy. Why do you want to talk about negative things. Let us celebrate the positive development. It is the biggest honour for the country's entertainment industry, he said. The mood was infectious. Almost everyone - right from the representatives of ICCR to the CEO of Penguin, which hosted the official dinner, director Muzaffar Ali, who anchored the Coexist Concert for Peace in tribute to the terror attacks in Mumbai and Gaza, the musicians and writers from Pakistan, the posse of authors from Europe and India and the cream of the glitterati from Delhi and Jaipur - was unanimous in their verdict: India could not have been more proud that it was Thursday evening. It feels great, echoed all cutting across divide. As for writer Vikas Swarup, it was luck all the way. I have always been a lucky author, he told IANS.

It’s prayer time for A R Rahman. After Slumdog Millionaire’s worldwide music acclaim, the music maestro has apparently become extra meticulous about rituals. Rahman said, “I have been particular about prayers for the last 15 years. With success and acknowledgement my faith and conviction in the strength of prayers has only increased ten folds.” A source close to the musician revealed, “Even when Rahman has a tedious schedule, he makes it a point to offer Namaaz five times a day, especially so after the awards. Recently, he asked a producer to hold the release event of Delhi 6 music earlier so that he could attend the Friday Namaaz.” Rahman confirmed this and said, “It’s true that I pray from 1 pm to 3 pm, so I requested the producers to wind up the event in the morning so that I get the afternoon free.” Clarifying his stance on religion, he said, “Religious sounds rather vulgar these days, I am more of a spiritual person. And I believe in being consistent with my spirituality. As one grows in life, one realises the magnitude of spirituality. It is the most beautiful passion. It raises you above all the negativities. For me and my music, spirituality is the most important element and I don’t think I can create the kind of music I do, if I don’t practice spirituality.” http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India_Buzz/AR_Rahman_Its_all_about_the_faith_/articleshow/4020872.cms

More than picturisation, what important is how the songs are used in movie, if placed well music would reach maximum number of people and create a lasting impact and Rakesh mehra is spot on with his picturisations...The way the rahman's songs were used in Rang de basanti is one of the best among all the movies he has composed so far... In Delhi 6, Apart from Masakili and Title song, I don’t think other songs would be picturised completely..But listening to the whole soundtrack I am eagerly looking forward to see Hey Kaala Bandar on screen..Its going to be really interesting. --- On Fri, 1/23/09, jibandevta jibande...@yahoo.co.in wrote: From: jibandevta jibande...@yahoo.co.in Subject: [arr] way of filming Delhi 6 songs To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Friday, January 23, 2009, 4:47 AM As far as RDB film is concerned I was disappointed with its way of filming the songs..Pathshala was not there at all.. Oscar nominations: Three cheers for Rahman IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 22, 2009] The Mozart of Madras A R Rahman is just a step away from claiming the coveted Oscar Awards, the dream of several hundred film personalities in the country. After spelling magic at the Golden Globe Awards, Rahman on Thursday became the first Indian to get three Oscar nominations for his score in Slumdog Millionaire, which was also was nominated for seven other categories including best film and best director. Interestingly the movie released to packed houses abroad will be opening across screens in India from Friday. Rahman was nominated for Best Original Score and the numbers 'Jai Ho' and 'O Saya' were shortlisted for the Best Original Song. Close on the heels of the dual-language film winning four Golden Globes, including one for Rahman, earlier this month, Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy were shortlisted for best director and best adapted screenplay categories. The nominations were announced at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theatre by Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker. The awards will be announced on 22 February at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. This is the first time that an Indian has won more than one nomination in Oscar history. An elated Rahman was as usual humble and reacted in his own way once he received the news of his work nominated for Oscars. Said Rahman, 'I did not think it will get there. God has been really kind. And I have to really thank the prayers of all the people and their good wishes. 'Something good is happening and I am really happy about it,' he said, adding there is a kind of optimism in the film and so much of positive vibes as you leave the movie hall. In the original score category, Rahman will compete with Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), James Newton Howard (Defiance), Danny Elfman (Milk) and Thomas Newman (WALL-E). Rahman will compete with Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman (Down to earth from WALL-E) in the original song category. Gulzar has penned the lyrics of Jai Ho and Maya Arulpragasam for O Saya. Those nominated in the best director category along with Boyle are David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Stephen Daldry (The Reader), Gus Van Sant (Milk) and Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon). The calm and humble music composer, shot fame not overnight but had to patiently wait for things to happen. From Roja to Slumdog Millionaire, life has taken many twists and turns, but Rahman as always remained the super human being as he was in his life. Even the news of his nomination to Oscars has not made any difference to him. In his typical manner, Rahman spoke very little. The Mozart of Madras said, 'I feel the whole world is watching. Everything is blur. Honestly, I am not thinking about the Oscars now. I'm at the top of the world'. However his fans have already started their celebrations. They distributed sweets and popular tunes of Rahman were belted out in several shops and households since lat night. An avid-fan of Rahman, said, 'no doubt, A R will bring home the Oscar. He deserves it. A man who has brought repute to the whole nation with his music score should get such great honour'. Echoing the same, another fan expressing her admiration for Rahman, said, 'his music is like a medicine for me. I grew up listening to his works. He has brought name and fame to the whole country. I pray Almighty that he gets the award on 22 February'. Ganesh Muthu, who owns a audio shop in Chennai, says, ' ever since Rahman won the Goldenglobe, enquiries for his musical album among the Westerners increased. Hopefully it would swell in the coming days.' Rahman's fans are eagerly awaiting for 22 February with prayers that he gets the award. Meanwhile, a good news for the loyal Rahman in Chennai is that the Slumdog Millionaire is getting ready to speak in Tamil soon. [arr] God has blessed Indian music: Rahman
God has blessed Indian music: Rahman *Chennai, Jan 23 : The honour of being the first Indian music director to be nominated for three Oscars sits lightly on the shoulders of A.R. Rahman, who attributes his success and fame to divinity.* Allah the merciful has blessed Indian music. I am lucky to be one of his chosen representatives, Rahman told IANS. The humble music maestro is, however, proud of India's musical heritage. Our scintillating sounds have moved billions for ages. Our musical gurus could make the oceans throb and the skies pour nectar to quench mother earth's thirst. But we have waited for eight decades for this sort of recognition, Rahman said. Rahman received the three Oscar nominations for the music he composed for British filmmaker Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches Bollywood style musical Slumdog Millionaire. While one nomination is for best original score, two are for the best original songs - Jai ho and O saya. My inspiration to compose the music was the movie, its thought and the message in the film, he said. I am already deliriously happy about the nominations. But the happiness will be manifold if and when we get at least one Oscar, Rahman added. After winning a Golden Globe award for his music for the same film earlier this month, Rahman had said: For the people of India to get an Oscar is a big thing. So for their sake, more than mine, I hope my song 'Jai ho' and my music score in 'Slumdog Millionaire' win the Oscar. Born as A.S. Dileep Kumar on Jan 6, 1966, Rahman's family converted to Islam in 1989. His father R.K. Shekhar, a music arranger for Malayalam films, died when Rahman was just nine years old. The family earned its living by hiring out musical instruments. Rahman began his musical Odyssey at the age of 11 as an accompanist in a troupe that hired his father's wares. It was run by the then rage of Tamil films Ilayaraja. Soon Rahman was also seen in the company of another maestro M.S. Vishwanathan. His arranging in the band Roots with childhood friend and percussionist par excellence Sivamani provided opportunities to create jingles, musical ambiences for television serials and documentaries. Rahman got his first big break in Mani Ratnam's Roja and later composed music for many films in southern India. His first full-fledged Bollywood project was Ram Gopal Varma's hit Rangeela. Most of the songs, including Tanha Tanha, Hai Rama and Yaaro sun lo Zara, were chartbusters. After that there was no looking back for him. In the late 90s, S.S. International, one of the earliest FM radio companies, approached Rahman for a byte on New Year. My late husband Aiyappan went with his portable recorder and was asked to wait by Rahman 'for a few minutes' that lasted for almost three hours, recalled the company's director A. Chitra. Finally, Rahman came out from his music room with a cassette that had a short composition. When it was broadcast, fan mail flooded us for a fortnight. They were enough to fill 10 sacks, Chitra added. Rahman became a household name with soulful compositions in Dil Se…, 1947 Earth, Taal, Lagaan, Guru, Rang De Basanti and Jodhaa Akbar. Rahman not only won hearts in India, but also made a mark on the global music scene. He got his first international break when Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to compose music for Broadway musical Bombay Dreams, which won him immense international fame. He also composed for the stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings that premiered in Canada in 2006 and in London in 2007. Rahman launched his first full-fledged orchestra last year. It has been named Global Music and is the first homegrown orchestra. He is all set to enthral his fans with his upcoming projects Delhi-6 and Blue. http://www.newkerala.com/topstory-fullnews-80181.html -- regards, Vithur
[arr] Rahman says that he is waiting for the day with bated breath
My wife's dream seems a possibility: AR Rahman *Spicezee Bureau* Mumbai, Jan 23: Allah Rakha Rahman, who bagged a whopping three big Oscar nominations for his praiseworthy score for 'Slumdog Millionaire', can't stop gushing about his latest feat. The musichttp://www.spicezee.com/articles/story21456.htm#maestro who has bought the country much appreciated acknowledgment has always stayed away from every singlehttp://www.spicezee.com/articles/story21456.htm#bit of self-praise. Related Stories ' http://www.spicezee.com/articles/story21409.htm But as the entire world is grooving to his 'Jai Ho' and 'O Saya', the usually calm Rahman seems to be thrilled and enthralled than ever. The music genius, who has been nominated in two categories Best Song and Best Original Score, is hoping to bring the golden man home as he says 'Pray that I bring home the Oscar'. Ask him whether he ever expected this and the ever so grounded whiz states that bagging an Oscar has been his dream and looks like the dream is finally coming true. Speaking to a news http://www.zeenews.com/daily, Rahman said, What can I say? It's a dream-come-true not so much for me as much as my wife. She'd wake up in the middle of the night and say, 'I want you to win an Oscar'. And I'd just smile. Today, my wife's dream seems a possibility. However, trying to curb his excitement the genius quickly adds, But, I don't want to get too hopeful. At the moment, let's just rejoice that my work has been nominated for the Oscars. I'm happy not just for myself but also for others who have been nominated. Talking about his family's reaction to his astounding nominations, Rahman said, My wife and my children jumped with joy when they heard the announcement. My mother is also here with me. It's her prayers, support and upbringing that's bearing fruit now. As for attending the Oscars goes, Rahman says that he is waiting for the day with bated breath. What's interesting is that his wife who has always stayed away from the limelight, will be accompanying him on the big day. The ceremony is on February 22. But I've other business to attend, so I'll be leaving for LA very shortly. And yes, my wife will accompany me to the Oscars. How can she not? She dreamt this dream for me. http://www.spicezee.com/articles/story21456.htm -- regards, Vithur

The rags-to-riches story about a boy from one of the Mumbai's teeming slums competing on a TV gameshow has been nominated for best director, best adapted screenplay and best picture at the Academy Awards, and in seven other categories. Rah Rah Rahman screamed a front-page headline in the Times of India newspaper, a leading English-language daily, referring to the three Oscar nominations for the film's Indian music composer, A.R. Rahman. Hindustan Times, another English daily, dubbed it the Perfect 10. The cast and crew of Slumdog, in Mumbai for the film's Indian premiere on Thursday, seemed overwhelmed by the attention. It's incredible isn't it? For us to be here, premiering the film on the night of the Oscar nominations is just incredible, producer Christian Colson told Reuters, shouting to be heard above the sound of traditional Indian drums and members of the cast dancing on the red carpet. It's destiny, which is what our film is about, Colson said. Slumdog Millionaire has already won four honors at the Golden Globes this month including best drama, and been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards. But for a country that has rarely tasted Oscar glory, 10 Academy Award nominations are a special treat. Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray was awarded a special Oscar for lifetime achievement in 1992 while Bhanu Athaiya won for best costume design in the 1982 film Gandhi. India's arrival at the mecca of film awards was nothing short of spectacular. The bonanza also belatedly made up for years of lacklustre performance in this most coveted cinema competition, the Times of India said.. Though directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle, the film has a mostly Indian cast and apart from Rahman's three nominations, Resul Pookutty also got the nod for best sound mixing. [arr] Rahman has called it an unexpected opportunity
India Excited About 'Slumdog Millionaire's' 10 Oscar Nominations By Anjana Pasricha New Delhi *23 January 2009* Indian slum children play in front of poster of Oscar nominated film 'Slumdog Millionaire' in Mumbai, 23 Jan 2009 The 10 Oscar nominations for the film Slumdog Millionaire, set amid the slums of Mumbai, have generated excitement, pride and some controversy in India. The Indian film industry is especially jubilant at the three nominations won by the film's Indian music composer A.R. Rahman. Indians flocked to movie theaters to watch the widely acclaimed movie *Slumdog Millionaire* when it was released Friday across the country. The film, made by British Director Danny Boyle, opened just a day after the country excitedly heard the news that it got 10 Oscar nominations, including one for best picture. The movie has created a huge buzz in the country ever since it shot into the international spotlight after bagging four awards at the Golden Globes. Dev Patel and Freida Pinto in scene from Slumdog MillionaireThe film tells the story of a boy from the teeming slums of Mumbai, who wins a popular game show. It stars a string of Indian actors, it is co directed by an Indian, and the music is composed by well known Indian composer, A.R. Rahman. Indians are especially jubilant over the three nominations for composer Rahman for best original score and two of his songs. Rahman has called it an unexpected opportunity to bring Indian music to the rest of the world. No, it was unexpected…..a lot of people predicted, I never took it seriously, he said. Though made by a British director, the film has been enthusiastically embraced by the Indian film industry known as Bollywood as one of its own. At a function held in Mumbai to mark the opening of the film, top Bollywood stars hoped the film, with its predominantly Indian cast and crew, will bring global recognition to Indian technicians, actors and musicians. They have shown us the way, now we all just have to follow, one person said. Danny Boyle has bridged the gap between Hollywood and Bollywood, said another. We are all very excited, a third person said. But the film has also sparked controversy. Some have slammed it for what they call its glorification of poverty through its vivid portrayal of life in the teeming slums of Mumbai. They say it romanticizes slums, shows prostitution and crime as Indian exotica, and reinforces Western stereotypes about India. A group of slumdwellers led by a social activist in Mumbai has called the film's title insulting, and is demanding that it should be changed. On Thursday, protestors in Mumbai held up banners saying I am not a dog and Poverty for Sale. But despite the controversy, the film, which has already received a good response from Western audiences, is likely to have a good run in India. http://www.voanews.com/english/2009-01-23-voa20.cfm -- regards, Vithur

Slumdog Millionaire premieres in Mumbai Posted Fri Jan 23, 2009 11:02am AEDT - *Video: *Slumdog Millionaire scoops 10 Oscar nominations (ABC News) http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200901/r332724_1502720.asx Critically-acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire premiered in the film's home city of Mumbai to a huge media fanfare and numerous Bollywood stars overnight, shortly after it earned 10 Oscar nominations. The rags-to-riches story about a boy from one of the city's teeming slums competing on a TV game show was nominated in three key categories - best director, best adapted screenplay and best picture. The city opened its arms to us. I don't want anyone to miss out on the debt of gratitude that we owe to this city, director Danny Boyle told reporters ahead of the premiere. A crush of media greeted Bollywood stars and production company executives on the red carpet amid the sound of traditional Indian drums. The entire cast and crew danced down the walkway. Slumdog Millionaire already won four honours at Hollywood's Golden Globes this month, including best drama, and has been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards. Meanwhile, the film's famed music composer, AR Rahman, picked up three Oscar nominations. It's incredible. Three for AR [Rahman] - you can't beat that, Boyle said. But despite the international plaudits, Boyle arrived in Mumbai earlier this week to accusations by some parts of the Indian media that his film is voyeuristic poverty porn. Boyle, known for his unconventional storytelling in films like Trainspotting, has been accused of romanticising slums, begging rackets, prostitution and crime. The director says he was just trying to capture Mumbai's lust for life. Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, who stars in Slumdog, on Thursday (local time) said the controversy might dissuade foreign filmmakers from coming to India. It creates a wrong atmosphere. There are countries who give incentives to filmmakers because when a film comes to a country, it brings money, it brings jobs, he told Reuters. - *Reuters* * http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/01/23/2472875.htm?section=entertainment * -- regards, Vithur

A.R. Rahman's absence at the Slumdog preview January 23, 2009 A.R. Rahman's absence was noticeable at the preview of Slumdog Millionaire, which was held at the Satyam's Six Degree screen. Sources close to the maestro say that he was busy talking to the press people over his nomination to the Oscar Awards and hence could not make it to the preview. The entire area surrounding the Satyam Theatre complex was swarmed with film personalities as many had made it a point to watch the preview of Slumdog Millionaire. The film was nominated for 10 Oscars and had already bagged three Golden Globe Awards. Those who made it to the event include A.R. And this is from the hard core fans desire. What should Rahman's be doing next from a composition standpoint.?? Guys - go ahead list your preference - I've heard/read/know: 1. Pure un-adultered hindustani classical 2. Pure un-adultered carnatic classical 3. Pure un-adultered western classical 4. Hard Rock 5. Metal 6. Symphony [my personal fav - and that too Indian style!] 8. Innovate the use of musical instruments - for e.g. the way Ustad Zakhir Hussain is capable of creating melody sounds (similar to voilin or flute) on the tabla. 9. Underground genre [not sure if I got this right] 10. Still love to get him explore and do a pure Indian folk album 11. Raw Afro music [Gumboots style] 12. An album only with harmonies [like many I already consider him the guru of harmony] Anything else.guys? Whether in receiving the Golden Globe recently, or in receiving umpteen awards in India over the years, he has remained supremely composed, as if Best of A R Rahman Slumdog sweeps Critics' Awards Slumdog Millionaire Oscar nominations to say he sways only to music. Industry compatriots, friends and film critics, who have interacted with Rahman for long believe music, rather than awards, is his stimulant. There is a certain sense of even-temperedness and reticence that strikes you when you meet the music director. This, of course is completely in contrast to the persona he has among singers who have worked with him. He is really fun-loving and rarely gets angry. You feel really bad when you leave his studio after the recording, says singer Naresh Iyer, who made his debut in Rahman's Rang De Basanti and went on to win a National Award for the same. Carnatic singer Bombay Jayashree adds, he is fun and forthcoming and knows exactly what he wants from a singer. You will sing 15-20 versions in his studio but the final cut will be completely different. But, outside of the studio, Rahman prefers his music to do the talking. Ask him questions about what makes him successful and his standard reply is, nothing. I believe that whatever comes at a particular time is a blessing from God. Even if Rahman were to win an Oscar, it is highly unlikely that he will shift base abroad lured by new projects. His other international projects such as London Dreams and Lord of the Rings required him to spend two-thirds of his year in London a few years ago, not his idea of home or hearth. About his international sojourn, Rahman had told ET in an earlier interview, I missed Chennai. London is a wonderful city, but it's not Chennai, not home. The other commitment, which will keep him in India are his plans of opening a music

Re: [ARR] Yahoo Group 10 years from now
Ha Ha Ha ! You all know why I opened up this 8 month old post of our 'In house' Astrologer - Gomzy. I sincerely pray that to Almighty that his predictions go wrong ;-) Gomzy - Wait for a month and see how your wish of 10 years is JUST realised in just 9 months flat !! Coincidence is,this was the first in our 100+ wish list ! I sense there is surely an Almighty connection here. Jai Ho AR !! Why don't we pray for our boss who has brought so much of joy to us. It's my thought .Let me know what you guys think. Some years before in the tamil weekly 'Kumudam' we used to have this 'Prarthanai Neram' ( Prayer Time) where readers used to do this group prayer for other readers wishes and problems at pre-informed time slots.Although in those days, mostly the requests would be of the get-well-soon types,we can think of doing for a such a nice occasion like winning the OSCARS . If I haven't made my point clear, let me try one more time - Lets announce a data time say Feb 13,Friday,8:00 AM .Who ever wants to join the prayer can do so from their homes ( offices, etc) in their very own way of prayers according to their beliefs and customs and wish our boss brings home the OSCARS ! Think of all 10,000 of us praying for him at the same time.WOW !! I also remember from Kumudam that lot of these prayers have been answered where the person requesting has reported back that their wish has been fufilled.Thats the power of Group prayers ! Lets do it for our man , who gave us 'Pray for me BROTHER !! ' We can arrive at a time and date on consensus. Cheers, srkriz aka radha
