Personally if u ask me i really liked the music also considering the fact that he took only 15 days to compose the entire sound tracks.. This will def go in as top 15 best compositions of Rahman for me.. But when i see people telling that he doesn't deserve oscars ..literally blood is coming out of my eyes when i read those..I think probably they meant whether he deserves it for SDM.. If they said whether he desrves for SDM??.. i wud like to answer them like this.. For all those ppl forget that he is gonna win it for SDM.. think that he is gonna win for the contribution that he has given to the world of Music and for enthralling us for past 17 years with every single note of his music..and showing us wats is true happiness,  patriotism, love and every other human feeling is and sometimes even beyond, through his music.. if u consider it dat way..i don think even those who listen to rahman songs wid half a ears wud refuse it and there is no more deserving person in India than Rahman ..ofcourse with due regads to all the legends in our country.. So my kind and humble request to all d fello rahmanics and grp members wud be..pls stop analyzing whether rahman deserves oscars or not for SDM whether dis is Rahmans best score or not etc..and now he being nominated lets pray together for Rahman ji that he gets the Oscars and make our country and every Indian proud  Regards, Sujay  A True devotee of Rahman Explore your hobbies and interests. [arr] Separate BGM Delhi6 release !!
Barely two weeks away from release and Delhi-6 still doesn't have its full background music. A. R. Rahman, whose schedules went haywire due to the unscheduled commitments in Los Angeles for the Golden Globe, has been working frantically to meet the deadline. While the film's songs quickly move up the charts, the background music still needs to be fully completed. Holed away from public eye in his studio in Chennai, Rahman has been burning the midnight oil trying to get the music in place. On Thursday night, Rakeysh flew to Chennai once more for portions of the background music. But will the film now be able to release as schedule on Feb 20? There seemed to be no sign of panic in Rakeysh's attitude. As far as I'm concerned we're on. The background score is nearly done. I'm flying down with one reel that needs looking into. And the mixing is now on. When it's Rahman, you know the pace and by now you're used to it. And look at the songs. The connect that they've found with listeners is amazing. T-Series is not able to keep with the supply order. I personally feel the background score is shaping up even better. In fact we plan to release a separate album of the background. But with a huge release planned for Feb 20, Rahman's genius is really cutting it close. And not every filmmaker would be as patient and enamored of Rahman's genius as Rakeysh Mehra. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/2009/02/07/12516/index.html Separate BGM audio release for Delhi6 is a real treat !! [arr] 'They are dancing in the aisles': America loves Slumdog
'They are dancing in the aisles': America loves Slumdog Ever since 'Slumdog Millionaire' won three Golden Globes, curiosity about the film got the better of America and the film has been running to packed houses. This interest has been fueled by the film winning many more awards especially as the Oscars are nearing. Danny Boyle has packaged the film for western audiences depicting a very alive India - chaotic and otherwise. An extraordinary screenplay by Simon Beaufoy keeps the interest level very high at all times. Another jewel in the crown of the film is A. R. Rahman's stupendous and thumping music. One can say the musical score in itself is a lifeline to the film and western ears are relishing every single note as they have never heard this kind of music before. According to reports, most American theaters are witnessing people dancing in the aisles as the credits roll and Indian Style filmi dancing is underway on the screen. The sequence has Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto dancing for the song 'Jai Ho' along with many other dancers in a Mumbai railway station. Interestingly enough, many Indians in the movie halls make preparations to leave while their American counterparts just don't want to leave. They end up dancing in the aisles. A slice of India welcomed in the United States in all earnest. According to many Indians who are living in the United States, the film has brought about much pride amongst them especially because tremendous Indian talent is on display. This weekend would be huge for 'Slumdog Millionaire' as the BAFTA Awards get underway. The film has been nominated in 11 categories. Let's hope A. R. Rahman and the rest of the team win many more awards. One gets the feeling 'Slumdog Millionaire' has a date with the Oscars. We'll know if that is true on the 22nd of this month. http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/44876.html -- regards, Vithur

[arr] Shankar Ehsan Loy team says, Rahman has always given top quality music and he always will.
AR Rahman's Delhi 6 music sales not hit by recession Story By: MANISHA PRADHAN SINGH updated on: 07/02/09 MUMBAI: Music composer A R Rahman began the year literally on a high note! Post the Golden Globe Awards, followed by the Oscar nominations for Slumdog Millionaire, the expectations from him are soaring. Known for giving soundtracks, which have good production value, his next album that is climbing the charts is Delhi 6. The soundtrack of Delhi 6 comprises 10 songs sans remixes. Moreover, according to T-Series, which has the music rights of Delhi 6, the album has been well received by consumers. Delhi 6 has been directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, after the cult classic film Rang De Basanti. The lyrics have been written by Prasoon Joshi. Rahman teams up with Mehra and Joshi once again for Delhi 6 after RDB. Even though the world is singing praises of Rahman post Golden Globes, he has always been recognized for his musical magic back home! Similarly, each and every song in Dehli 6 too upholds the high standards Rahman has set. T-Series chairman and managing director Bhushan Kumar says, Rahman has always given good music and the response to his music has always been good as far as sales are concerned. Moreover with the three talents - Rahman, Rakeysh Mehra and Prasoon Joshi coming together, the Delhi 6 album too is sure to be a big hit. Though his personal favourites are Masakali and Rehna Tu, Kumar feels the album as a whole is great. He says, Despite the recession, where people have become very selective about what they buy, we are getting a superb response as far as music sales of Delhi 6 are concerned. We are not feeling the hit of recession with this album. T-Series has the rights of some of Rahman's films like Taare Zameen Par, Jaane Tu, Yuvvraj, Ghajini, Slumdog Millionaire and Delhi 6. According to Mehra, Rahman is involved with the film right from the time the story is conceived to the final draft. He says, Rahman, Prasoon and I have been working on the music since the last three years. In all my films the songs are played in the background theyare more like an interpretation of the story rather than lip sync, therefore there is nothing like the song has to be ready before the shoot. We discuss the story ideas together and in the process, Rahman starts forming pictures in his head and he works on the concept and the tune. He has a very unique way of working. *PEERS TALK* Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, musician Shankar Mahadevan from the Shankar Ehsan Loy team says, Rahman has always given top quality music and he always will. The soundtrack of Delhi 6 too is sure to do well. Post the Golden Globe and the Oscar nominations the rest of the world has become more aware of Indian music and it's sure to have a bigger market abroad. Music director Sajid, from the Sajid Wajid duo, feels, Expectations from Rahman post the awards might have gone up but Rahman's work has always been beyond expectations. When we talk about Rahman we talk about guarantee. Though there are some music composers like Aadesh Srivastav who are doing work for the international market, the singing of Jai Ho! at the Oscars and the numerous awards that Rahman has won will definitely make the international market more aware about the quality and talent in India. Director Mehra adds, Rahman has always delivered good music and brought a change. In fact he's the change. The demand for the music of Delhi 6 too is hot. *DELHI 6's MUSIC MANTRA* With Delhi 6, Rahman offers a wide array of musical genres in a single album ranging from devotional, Sufi, classical, rock, romance, folk. Rahman has also used more of new-age voices like Mohit Chauhan, Javed Ali and Benny Dayal for this album. On one hand, the Delhi 6 album has a completely Indian classical like Bhor Bhayi sung by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal and on the other it has Hey Kaala Bandar, which is somewhat a fun song on the lines of Masti Ki Paathshala from Rang de Basanti. Then there's Genda Phool, which has a folk touch wherein Rehman has matched new age with folk music. Speaking to Bussinessofcinema.com, Mehra says, The song Genda Phool is a folk song and it was given to us by Raghuveer Yadav and Rajat Dholakia gave the additional music for the song. On the other hand, Dil Gira Dafatan is more western, where Rahman introduces a new playback voice - Ash King. According to Mehra, Rahman had heard him in London sometime back, so he got him to India to do this song. Being a third generation Indian living in London, he could not speak Hindi so we had to train him before singing every line. It took us almost 18 days to record the song. The outcome was excellent, Rahman has always been clear about the voice. Masakali is a song about a pigeon in the film and is also soaring on the popularity charts. Sung by Mohit Chauhan, of Jab We Met fame, the song is catchy and Chauhan's style of singing stands out. Speaking about this song, Mehra says,

[arr] Interview of ARR's mom - latest KUMUDAM Magazine - Translation
Parents will be so elated even if their kids win a prize in just a small competition in school. How happy will Rahman's mom feel as he has got 90 awards till now, including Golden Globes and other international awards? To know all this, we visited Rahman's house, and spoke with his mom Kareema Begum. She too is reticent, just like Rahman! Rahman must've been 5 years old at that time. Me and my husband visited a friend of his, a leading composer. The composer told us playfully You mentioned that your son plays harmonium.. let's see if he can play what I play now... He payed, and ARR listened to it immediately played it, much to the surprise of everyone. The composer was so impressed. That incident made it clear to us that, music was the field in which Rahman would shine. He always used to have a small harmonium with him. He'd compose new tunes and show it to us. Since he was playing well, we put him in proper music training. Being supportive of him from the beginning is my only contribution to his success. Kareema mentions that her favourite song is Snegithane (Alaipayuthey). How many ever times you listen to it, you can't get bored of it, she says! It is difficult to break into film music. Rahman's plus point was that he retained and succeeded in the first film chance that he got because of God's grace. At first, he composed the background score for Roja for 15 days continuously without proper sleep. I cried seeing my son suffer so much! I wondered if I'd pushed him into the very tough field of Film music. But all my sufferings and worries vanished as he won the national award for his first film itself! Even before he'd got film music opportunites, he always used to be busy composing some tune or the other! Right from his childhood, Rahman had no interests other than music. He never had fun like chatting with friends or going for movies. He always used to stay inside the locked room and compse music! I used to ask him, why he was straining so much. He used to reply We should keep working hard! That is the effort from our side. Some day, we will get rewards (oppourtunites) for all our efforts! Rahman's mom has just one worry - he is so busy with work that he doesnt eat properly! The motherly love!! My son doesnt even have time to eat properly. Even if it gets delayed till 3 am, I wait for him, serve the food and then only go to bed. Otherwise, I can't sleep properly! How many ever awards a son may get - a mom feels happy only when the son eats properly! Abt Oscars: When Rahman was 9 years old, he played with 3 keyboards at the same time in the show called 'wonder balloon' in Doordarshan (in DD tamil network). After that program, everyone in our locality started talking about him. Likewise, the whole world is talking about the Oscar buzz for Slumdog Millionaire! [arr] [RM] I like the song Pachai Nirame for many reasons - Singer Karthik
*Singer Karthik in Rahmania ( Pre Recorded Interview )* With Rahman, he is very very creative, spontaneous and very open. He will see, if the singer is able to justify the tune which he has in mind. If a singer gives something more , and if He ( AR) liked it, he will surely have it in the song. The judgement about that thing would be very nice with him. He is very open to anything new. *He has a good balance between what he wants and what can be incorporated.* This is a very very nice quality in him. Many a times, he would not fix himself that he wants a particular thing, while at some other instance he may fix up on what exactly he wants. He knows what to say. Its an amazing quality he has. His music has wonderstruck me, till the time I met him and sang for him. As I start knowing him more and more, his simplicity wonderstrucks me now. We all know well, that he is a genius when it comes to music. He is very blessed and very very talented. The most amazing aspect in him is that amidst such success and glory, he remains so simple. *He handles success in a very beautiful fashion*. I don't know as to how many people can react to success, the way he does it actually. He is very spiritual, and I think that helps him a lot. His simplicity strikes me always, and I think as to how a person can be like that. I had a lot of songs which had a lot of influence on me. First, when Roja released , I couldn't understand anything . I was listening to it again, again and again. And similarly, the song Ennavale, Uyirum Neeye, and a lot many songs in those times. I started getting close to music listening to majority of his songs. That song was so dear to me that I used to listen to it more than five or six times, even before I went to bed, or had food. Like these, we can keep telling a lot many songs also. Roja was a trendsetter as you all know, and I have heard a lot many times. Slumdog and Jai Ho was great as it was typical Bollywood style of Rahman. The music is very Indian and Indian based. I think the world has accepted it now, and many would open their eyes and start listening to more Indian songs now. One more very important quality in him is that he is very keen to explore new options. That's an innate quality in him, and he always wants to do something new. *He always keeps searching for something new, and that's why he has grown up this much. The keenness to keep getting better. * More than Tamil Music, for the Indian music in whole, he has redefined technology to a great extent. He serves as an idol to all musicians existing now, and we look up at him for guidance. Rahman is way ahead in terms of technicality when compared to the current existing Hollywood studios. He has taken music to such heights and it's a phenomenal achievement. I think and believe that his strength is that each and every album of his has a particular colour in it. If you see Jodha Akbar and Jaane tu Ya Jaane Na, there is no similarity between the two. Both are entirely different work. One is a period movie and another is a different one. That is a fantastic quality. He adapts himself so well to the theme of the movie and to what the Director wants and asks him to do. *Without separating the re Recording and the songs separately, he gives an exclusive shade to the movie, and to suit the movie well. That is his strength. * I like the song Pachai Nirame very much from Alaipayudhey. I am very happy that he made a song like that. I have felt very happy hearing to it many a time. The melody, the lyrics were so beautiful. Hariharan would have sung it very well. The orchestration of the song was so beautiful. The visualization would be superb, and the movie is also a great movie. I was stunned seeing the picturisation and completely fell in love with the song. I like the song for many reasons. I am so proud to see the Oscar Nominations . Really Really hopes he wins one. Certainly he would. There is no doubt in that. As a fan I am so excited about the whole thing. Wish him all the very best. I am thankful for this Interview and my thanks to Aahaa Fm. Keep smiling. Take Care. -- regards, Vithur

[arr] I'd love to make another film in India: Danny Boyle
http://ibnlive.in.com/news/id-love-to-make-another-film-in-india-danny-boyle/84728-8-single.html For Slumdog Millionaire the India release is a homecoming, the film weaves in all the elements of a Hindi film to all the elements of the life in Mumbai. The result is a cross-cultural cocktail, which has taken the world by storm. For director Danny Boyle a self-confessed city junkie, Slumdog is an ode to both the resilience and the unlimited possibilities of the city. In an interview with CNN-IBN the director spoke about the experience of shooting in Mumbai, the film’s success and the 10 Oscar nominations that its received. Anuradha SenGupta: The movie starts with a question, where the protagonist is on the verge of winning Who Wants to be a Millionaire? The question is has he cheated, is he plain lucky, is he a genius, or is it written. Why has Slumdog Millionaire seen this kind of incredible international affection and acclaim which one of the options would you pick? Danny Boyle: It’s incredible, the mystery of the way it’s taken off the way it has. It’s a tribute to everybody who’s made it and his or her love, devotion, hard work and graft that has gone into it. I’ve done films before and have had that kind of dedication, hard work and graft but there’s something extra, some extra spice added somewhere that went into it and it just makes it flower in its right. Anuradha SenGupta: So the option you’re picking is written? Danny Boyle: I’ve grown to understand destiny a little bit more and value it really. I don’t fully understand it. I don’t think anyone from the West really can, where we view it as a charming thing or a cute thing. But I’d say there’s something much more profound. Anuradha SenGupta: Even in the West, as a filmmaker I would believe that you would be a little more conscience. Because Slumdog Millionaire almost didn’t see a theatrical release? Danny Boyle: That is one of places where the process was accused of destiny. It looked like the film was only going to come out on DVD only because the distributor in America closed down. What is extraordinary is that they passed it with great grace to the other distributor. They are also the people who are brilliant, who have grown this small film slowly. You benefit from a disaster, as not being released is a disaster for the film. We were lucky to get Anil Kapoor for the film and it’s only now I realise how lucky we were to get Anil and how much we have benefited from his presence in the film. It may suggest it to KBC but he also lifts it away from it as well. Anuradha SenGupta: I’m interested in the way you’re reacting to the fact that the film was a slow starter in the US and UK and then it picked up momentum, but in India it’s being treated like a really big film? Danny Boyle: It started very small in the US, but because of the work they’d done which culminated the Golden Globes, which meant that any subsequent release like the one in UK and the one in India could be much bigger. Because there is a built in media attention one is guaranteed, so that helped it. I’m absolutely delighted that it’s being released quite wide here; I’d love as many people get to see it. Although I think people might find the beginning of the film very tough, it’s the heart of the film, which has enormous affection. Anuradha SenGupta: It’s very important for you to make this point isn’t it, because there are and will be some people who will be touchy about the picture of India that is portrayed in the film? Danny Boyle: I had the privilege of making the film in India and we made the best we could. I tried to include as much of the city as possible. It’s also a privilege to accept what people say about the film in the end. One must not fight it, because as a filmmaker I’ve had the privilege of making the film. And then it’s the people’s chance to say what they like about the film. I think when people see the film, the spirit they get from the end of the film will transcend any difficulties they’ve had with it. When you’ve worked in the slums, what you learn from it is, you wanted it to come out. They are not places of abject suffering, they may look poor to a Western audience but actually they are breathtakingly resilient places. And if we all live as resourcefully as they live given how little they’ve got, the world will actually be a little place in the sense of community and sense of self-support that they give which was one of the big surprises to me. There are people in the West stressing over the poverty and it’s true there isn’t enough infrastructure but as a filmmaker I found the experience exhilarating. The energy of the places and the sense of pride and optimism in limited circumstances were exhilarating. Anuradha SenGupta: Having lived in Mumbai all my life, when I saw the film I didn’t feel it’s been made with an external gaze. You’ve captured the beauty and ugliness of the city which everyone is familiar

[arr] Man Chandre, Himalaya....need help from Music groups.
Dear Friends, While I fell in love with Man Chandre the first time I heard it... something else is disturbing me: a) If you remove the ghattam, the unconvential rhythm, the high pitching by Sukhwinder - and just keep the song to simple vocals (and the tinkles) - then this song has ghazal as its foundation style (and not a folk style) - Correct? b) I'm dead sure that I've heard a similar Jagjit Singh ghazal - but unable to pin it down did someone else feel this as well? If so, can you point that out? Himalaya - again why do I feel that the note pattern (not same notes, but same pattern - something like mirror image if you may like) follow's Beethoven's Fur Elise? Again - did someone else notice or felt this? BTW - I'm not questioning anything here - just wondering if Rahman is playing/experimenting with established numbers and giving his own twist/version to it... types... I hope I get to ask Rahman this someday? :) In the meantime, the music gurus in this group can perhaps take a dig at these observation. ciao / Gopal Check out the all-new face of Yahoo! India. A. Re: [arr] ARR reacts to SDM critics.. is this true?
I agree with Vithur that ARR has reacted (can he ever react? :-) ) very humbly, a characteristic of him. I hope people realize that there are places where silence becomes a sin, an injustice. Poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar has wrote: Samar Shesh Hai, Nahin Paap Ka Bhaagi Kewal Vyaadh Jo Tatasth Hain Samay Likhega Unka Bhi Apradh. (When a war is being waged between justice and injustice, the hunters and killers are not the only sinners, but those who remain neutral at such crucial point would also be held guilty in the due course of time.) SDM and Danny are being beaten disproportionately, way beyond their deeds. Danny showed an ugly truth which become uncomfortable to some, and the coverage his film got brought jealousy to several, and they all started hitting him and the film. The point here was whether ARR could maintain silence and let Danny and SDB be targetted like this. See the contrast. Even the author of the novel, deserted Danny at the first hint of a trouble. When the title of the film was questioned and a law suit was filed, the author was in Jaipur to attend an international seminar. and, I was surprised, that he said that it was unfortunate that the film carried the title slumdog. He said that he has nothing to do with this title because he had titled his novel as QA. Can you see how thankless, nashuqra, selfish this author is. Nobody knew him or his two bit novel. Danny making movie on it made the novel and the author an international celebrity, plus the royalty all this must have brought to the author, and he had the dirty guts to distance himself from the film and from Danny. It is a Ditch, a let down. ARR could have remained silent as his nature is, or he could have said that he just composed the music for the film sitting in Chennai and he has nothing to do with the title or story or dialogs or actors or locations or acting, or anything other than music. But, ARR didn't do that. ARR rather came out vocally and stood by Danny and the entire film. He is sort of saying that the film is a team work and everybody should share the praises and the brickbats for it. By speaking out, ARR made a rare exception for Danny who is now his friend. My respect for ARR has grown by his these comments, even though, as you rightly said, this is so uncharacteristic of our man to speak out. Our man is friend's friend, is thankful by nature, can be relied when needed. -- Rawat On 2/7/2009 7:59 PM India Time, _Vithur_ wrote: I think and believe he has reacted in a very humble fashion. thanx aravind for the share... On Sat, Feb 7, 2009 at 7:15 AM, Aravind AM aravind...@yahoo.com wrote: Parents will be so elated even if their kids win a prize in just a small competition in school. But, Rahman is busy working on his next film project, without thinking about the awards or participating in big celebrations. This maturity is what I learnt from Rahman. I'll be happy, if Rahman gets the Oscar, by God's grace! [arr] FOX pushes Jai Ho for Best Song
'Slumdog Millionaire' to Oscars voters: Choose this tune for best song, not that one Over the last few days Oscars voters received a campaign CD featuring two of Slumdog Millionaire's three music nominations: best song (Jai Ho) and score. Missing from the CD was Slumdog Millionaire's other contender for best song (O Saya). Fox Searchlight is daring to choose between its Oscar children. The studio wants voters to focus their Slumdog Millionaire love on one song, fearing that the vote might split otherwise, causing both to lose. So this is good strategy, although poor politics. Inevitably, the studio is inviting a chorus of discontent from the folks behind the song not being hyped. In this case, the strategy is probably wise because Jai Ho is the obvious favorite. It's the big, magical dance finale of Slumdog Millionaire. Voters may not know it by name, though, and may easily confuse it with the other tune since the titles of both are in Hindi. Now they'll probably get the hint after being prodded by the studio. What's unfortunate about this decision is that O Saya is written by one of the coolest music artists on the planet right now. M.I.A. is nominated for record of the year at this Sunday's Grammys (Paper Planes). There's always the possibility, of course, that this strategy might backfire with those bull-headed, contrary-minded academy members. After all, Paramount Classics made it clear in 2005 that it wanted an Oscar nomination for the title tune to Hustle Flow, but ended up getting one for It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp which won! However, that's a rarity and that occurred prior to Oscar nominations being unveiled, not afterward. Such favoritism being shown at this late point in the derby trot is extraordinary. When Disney nabbed bids for three songs from Enchanted, it was clear that That's How You Know the big dance spectacular staged in Central Park was the movie's best shot to win, but it got the same amount of attention and campaign push as So Close and Happy Working Song. All three lost to Falling Slowly from Once. DreamWorks didn't single out one of Dreamgirls three nominees Listen, Patience, Love You I Do and lost the Oscar to Melissa Etheridge's I Need to Wake Up from An Inconvenient Truth. Not all multiple nominees lose because of voting splitting, though. The Lion King (1994) had three nominations for song and triumphed for Can You Feel the Love Tonight? http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2009/02/slumdog- million.html

On one hand, the Delhi 6 album has a completely Indian classical like Bhor Bhayi sung by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal and on the other it has

Re: [arr] FOX pushes Jai Ho for Best Song
I would personally like to see O Saya win the award more than Jai Ho.. --- On Sat, 2/7/09, Vinod Raju vi...@arr4music.com wrote: From: Vinod Raju vi...@arr4music.com Subject: [arr] FOX pushes Jai Ho for Best Song To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Saturday, February 7, 2009, 7:28 PM 'Slumdog Millionaire' to Oscars voters: Choose this tune for best song, not that one Over the last few days Oscars voters received a campaign CD featuring two of Slumdog Millionaire' s three music nominations: best song (Jai Ho) and score. Missing from the CD was Slumdog Millionaire' s other contender for best song (O Saya). After all, Paramount Classics made it clear in 2005 that it wanted an Oscar nomination for the title tune to Hustle Flow, but ended up getting one for It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp — which won! However, that's a rarity and that occurred prior to Oscar nominations being unveiled, not afterward. Such favoritism being shown at this late point in the derby trot is extraordinary. When Disney nabbed bids for three songs from Enchanted, it was clear that That's How You Know — the big dance spectacular staged in Central Park — was the movie's best shot to win, but it got the same amount of attention and campaign push as So Close and Happy Working Song. All three lost to Falling Slowly from Once. DreamWorks didn't single out one of Dreamgirls three nominees — Listen, Patience, Love You I Do — and lost the Oscar to Melissa Etheridge's I Need to Wake Up from An Inconvenient Truth. Not all multiple nominees lose because of voting splitting, though. The Lion King (1994) had three nominations for song and triumphed for Can You Feel the Love Tonight? http://goldderby. latimes.com/ awards_goldderby /2009/02/ slumdog- million.html
[arr] Rahman responsible for Tamil films going global: Vivekh
For those who don't know who is Vivek..Vivek is one of very good comedians in the Tamil Film Industry and his comedies always carry some sort of social message or other...He was deservedly given Padma Shri this year.. Here is a story : --- If not for music composer AR Rehman, talent from Tamil filmdom would not have got their due recognition, noted Tamil comedian Vivekh has said. I do think that regional talent is not getting its due credit in the country. Our industry (Tamil films) has gone global, especially after A R Rahman entered the scene, Vivekh, who was conferred Padma Shri recently said. If our music is getting acknowledged globally today, it is because of Rahman. But Rahman is not the only one who is responsible for this, media is also one of the reasons, he said. Chennai-born Rahman who made his entry through Roja in Tamil and Hindi simultaneously went on to attain stardom in both Tamil and Hindi films within years. He is also in the queue for Oscars, for his hit scores in Slumdog Millionaire. Vivekh, who was the first Tamil comedian to be bestowed with the Padma Shri award, refused to comment on veteran comedian Nagesh, who died just a week ago, not getting such an honour. Vivekh said he was a great fan of Nagesh and he enjoyed his well-acclaimed movies -- Server Sundaram, Kaadalikka Neramillai and Neer Kumizhi. Nagesh, who entered cinema from stage and was with it for nearly five decades, died recently and there was criticism in the industry that he was denied the national honours. Showering praises on 'Slumdog Millionaire', which has got multiple nominations in Oscar, Vivekh said the film has facilitated the entry of our artistes into Hollywood. On Oscar Awards, he said there was nothing wrong in accepting such honours, but one can aim for the award only if their work is original. The ultimate recognition for an actor is when the last person leaving the cinema hall being impressed by the performance. When I reach out to the audience when I am giving my 100 per cent that would be the ultimate recognition for me, he said. On whether he will act in Hindi films if given a chance, Vivekh said he was not interested in acting in Hindi films as language is a barrier. I don't know slangs for that humour. Humorists should know the language well and exercise command in order to perform, he said. But, the actor says he loves watching Bollywood movies and he almost had a crush on yesteryear actress Madhuri Dixit. Vivekh also feels there should be a 'Best comedian' category in national awards to facilitate the regional comedians to attain national fame. The actor, who is known for taking on social issues like female infanticide, bribery and corruption in his comedies, also feels that public figures owe a responsibility towards their fans and should conduct themselves in a rightful manner. A public figure or a celebrity has to live by some codes and principles. If you are a public figure, you are a public property as well. Since people follow you, there is no other way. Vivekh also feels that there should be more comedy-oriented films in the industry. Only a limited footage of is allotted to comedians in a film unlike Hollywood where there are a lot of humour-centric films. I aspire for such films in India. Not that we did not have such kind of films earlier but I wish the pattern returns, he said. http://www.timesnow.tv/NewsDtls.aspx?NewsID=28942
[arr] Battle Bafta for Slumdog
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090208/jsp/nation/story_10503280.jsp Battle Bafta for Slumdog AMIT ROY London, Feb. 7: A.R. Rahman is reckoned to have an excellent chance of picking up a Bafta tomorrow evening in London in a much-anticipated ceremony which could point to Slumdog Millionaire’s Oscar prospects in exactly a fortnight in Los Angeles. The setting for the red-carpet British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, for which Hollywood A-listers are turning up along with a hopeful Indian contingent (Anil Kapoor, Freida Pinto, Dev Patel and Irrfan Khan, along with Slumdog Millionaire’s director Danny Boyle and screenplay writer Simon Beaufoy), is the magnificent Royal Opera House — this is about a trillion light years removed from the Mumbai slums where Vikas Swarup’s adapted novel is set. The author of QA is not able to make it, because he was apparently “not invited on time”. His friends are hoping he will attend the Oscars. With 11 nominations, Slumdog Millionaire is expected to do well. Sharon Stone, Daniel Craig and Emma Watson are among those who will hand out the prizes. Boyle will be disappointed if he is not named Best Director and Beaufoy if he does not pick up Best Adapted Screenplay, but in the Best Film category, their movie is up against The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The latter also has 11 nominations. Dev Patel, the 18-year-old British Indian actor, can scarcely believe how his life has been transformed since he was plucked from nowhere to play the lead, Jamal Malik, the chaiwallah from the slums who goes on to win Rs 20 million in a TV contest. He has been nominated for Best Actor but it will be a surprise if he wins for he is up against very strong opposition — Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler). Freida Pinto, who is also making her debut as a film actress, may also have to be content representing Indian beauty though she is nominated for Best Supporting Actress — she is up against Amy Adams (Doubt), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading) and Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler). In the Best Actress category, Kate Winslet has been nominated twice, for The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Angelina Jolie has been picked, too, for the Clint Eastwood directed Changeling. But this is more to ensure she consents to come to London, pause with her husband, Brad Pitt, on the red carpet and lend Hollywood mystique to the occasion. Tomorrow night there will also be an occasion to assess whether the negative campaign against Slumdog Millionaire mounted by some in Bollywood has had any effect. Recent interviews given by Boyle has been taken up with the director justifying his stand that he has not exploited the child actors from the slums by underpaying them. Slumdog Millionaire is still heading the British box office, having taken £14,216,466 by the week beginning January 30, while in the US, the revenue has amounted to $67,193,169. Today’s report in The Times, “Get ready for surprises”, notes that “the A-list will be out in force at the Baftas tomorrow night; but predicting gongs isn’t easy”. It also makes the point that by staging the Baftas before the Oscars — it used to be the other way round — the British ceremony has become much more significant. “It’s been nearly a decade of incremental transformations, but this pre-eminent British awards ceremony now safely enjoys its status as one of the three major movie bunfights — beginning with January’s Golden Globes and ending with the Oscars on February 22 — that define the trophy season.”
