[arr] 'Slumdog' vs. 'Wall-E' for best song

2009-02-09 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

'Slumdog' vs. 'Wall-E' for best song
No clear frontrunner among Oscar nominees
By JON BURLINGAME

For the third time in the past 20 years, music-branch voters chose only three
tunes as best
song nominees. Two are from the same movie, and two of the singers are
world-class world-music
recording artists.

There is no clear-cut favorite this year, unlike, say, eight years ago when Bob
Dylan's win for
"Things Have Changed" was a foregone conclusion, or the year of "Titanic" and
its ubiquitous
Celine Dion song. What happens Feb. 22 depends several factors.

First, the "Slumdog" phenomenon: Both of the key songs in "Slumdog Millionaire"
are nominated,
both co-written by leading Indian composer A.R. Rahman (who is also nominated
for his original
score). The soundtrack album is rising fast on the charts, so a "Slumdog" win
would not
surprise.

But which song? Will voters remember that it was "Jai Ho" that was performed as
an elaborately
choreographed, Bollywood-style dance number in the Mumbai train station at the
end of the
movie?

"Jai Ho," with Indian lyrics by poet Gulzar, may be the most talked-about
musical moment from
year-end films. And Oscar voters, excited about the prospect of seeing the
number re-created on
the telecast, may be thinking about that when filling out their ballots. If it
wins, it will be
only the second foreign-language song to do so (after 2004's "Al otro lado del
rio" from "The
Motorcycle Diaries").

But Rahman's collaboration with London-born, Sri Lankan-raised Maya
Arulpragasam -- better
known to the pop world as M.I.A. -- on "O... Saya" may resonate with younger
voters for its
pounding rhythms, electronica sound and rap-style vocals. That song's used
earlier in the film,
as police chase poor youngsters from an airport tarmac through the streets.

"Slumdog's" competition is the song from the end of the Disney-Pixar movie
"Wall-E," co-written
by Thomas Newman (also nominated for his score) and Peter Gabriel. The nom is
Gabriel's first
despite having composed scores for such films as "The Last Temptation of
Christ" and
"Rabbit-Proof Fence."

Eight of the past 20 song statuettes have gone to tunes from animated movies
(all Disney pics
but one). And nine of the past 20 have gone to popular artists (including
Gabriel's ex-Genesis
bandmate Phil Collins, for "Tarzan," another Disney toon). Also, Gabriel's
human-rights and
environmental activism would seem to coincide with the politics of many Acad
voters.

And, in recent years, voters have spread the Oscar wealth among multiple pics.
A "Slumdog"
score win could translate into a "Wall-E" song win.

[arr] Asquith Award for Achievement in Music’

2009-02-09 Thread Vithur
Awards and more awards:

One of the biggest awards nights of the season took place last night on
either side of the planet. Leading the way was the British Academy Film
Awards, which saw a host of British and Hollywood stars gather at the Royal
Opera House in Covent Garden for a night which saw Danny Boyle's *Slumdog
Millionaire* steal seven BAFTA masks, including the awards for direction and
film of the year. The film's composer/songwriter A.R. Rahman took home the
'Anthony Asquith Award for Achievement in Music', his second major prize for
the film's music – following a Golden Globe win in January. Rahman thanked
those who had introduced him to Western audiences – including Andrew Lloyd
Webber, who brought him to the West End for *Bombay Dreams* - and his fans
all over the world. The Indian composer beat Alexandre Desplat, Hans Zimmer
& James Newton Howard, Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus and Thomas Newman to
the top spot.

[arr] Change in World Music on its way !

Like the way he changed the Indian film music, its now the turn for the
western film music to be given a new trend by our ARR.

What we can be proud is AR has taken the Indian music to the west and he has
won in that. So, he is kind of promoting the Indian music to the world.
Even with Bombay Dreams, he was well received for the way he presented the
Bollywood sound to the west

[arr] "I am giving it a try to satisfy them," ARR

2009-02-09 Thread Vithur
It is getting better and better: Rahman

London, Feb 9 (PTI) Having pocketed both the Golden Globe and the BAFTA
awards, Indian composer A R Rahman, who has floored the international
audience with his music in 'Slumdog Millionaire', is now hoping for the
biggest one - the Oscars.
Rahman scooped the BAFTA award in the Best Music Score category for
'Slumdog', the rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum-dweller that bagged six
other prizes, including the Best Film and the Best Director at the
star-studded function here.

"It is a great feeling... It is getting better and better and let's hope for
the biggest one - the Oscars," Rahman told reporters after bagging the
award.

"It is a bit different. I think it is important for people to know who the
composer is. People started liking the music. It is a great feeling. So, I
am giving it a try to satisfy them," the musician added.

Rahman has been nominated for three awards under two categories -- for Best
Original Music Score and for Best Song for "Jai Ho" and "O Saya" for
'Slumdog' at the Oscars scheduled later this month.

However, the Chennai-born musician was not the only Indian to receive the
BAFTA honour as sound technician Resul Pookutty also won for the Best Sound
Editing at the British Award ceremony. Resul has also been nominated at the
Oscars under the same category. PTI

Re: [arr] Are the Oscar Jury known?

2009-02-09 Thread devMannemela
Rawat,

There is no jury as such. The entire academy (all the members) select the
winners
in all categories. The nominees are selected by branches of the academy
(i,e actors will vote for the acting nominees, the music branch will
selected
the music related nominees etc..) But for the final winners, everybody
votes.

The Academy is quite an exclusive club and AFAIK its membership list is not
public.
A lot of P.R. schmoozing goes on to influence this group. Explicit lobbying
(bribing)
is obviously prohibited :-)

Simon Beaufoy, (the screenwrited for Slumdog and who is also nominated for
an academy) who is doing the PR rounds, was here at my workplace for a Q&A
session.
Lots of interesting discussions about the movie, Bollywood, India..
Simon was praising Rahman as a superstar and Pookutty as a genius who
did miracles with sound on the Mumbai streets.

Somebody asked him about the opening slum sequence and if the song ("O
Saaya") was composed before or after the shoot.
Simon mentioned Rahman (he kept calling him AR) came in late into the
project. They were working with a temp score
and "O Saaya" was composed after the edit.

We had another screening of the film (the third one, I think) here and once
again, in email discussions that followed, the music was mentioned by
a lot of people as brilliant. Rahman's NPR interview and KCRW (Morning
becomes eclectic) interview were forwarded around.
Oscar or not, ARR has definitely gained a huge number of new fans, who are
keen to explore his other scores.
BTW, I recommended "Dil Se" to a lot of people as ideal (and accessible)
intro to ARR

Is it Resul Pookutty or ARR? I mean, I did not see the award ceremony live, but
gooing by accepted tradition, award for technical category like Audio editing
will be given first before coming on to the best score. In that case Resul
would be first Indian to bag BAFTA, overcoming ARR by minutes..

[arr] ARR Interview with TIME Magazine....

2009-02-09 Thread jayram.M.N
Hats to A.R.R for getting the BAFTA awards.

We are all genuinely pleased with the awards and touched by the
recognition.

I happen to see another interview given by ARR to TIME
magazine.

http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1876545,00.html

Enjoy !!!

P.S:
I did not like the video in which Kamal hassan appreciates A.R.R.
Kamal is also incredibly talented but he needs to learn how to
genuinely collaborate with others and work in unison to achieve great
things...Most of him movies he is the only person putting all
efforts...

[arr] What would be the results of this experiment?

2009-02-09 Thread Chord
I'm always been interested in the relationship between knowledge of a
composer for a piece of music and the resulting judgement of that
piece of music. Here's an experiment I propose:

Two groups of people:

One group is composed of indentified Rahman fans (those who listen to
Rahman often, follow his activities, await his releases, listen to
his music quite often.people in this group) The operational
definition of being a Rahman fan would be empirically validated.

Second group is composed of casual music fans who are not identified
Rahman fans. They might like some of his scores, but do not consider
themselves to be actual fans of Rahman.

Both groups are selected randomly from the population in India, each
meeting group definition criteria based on valid and reliable
questionnaires. There are equal numbers in each group (same n). The
overall N would be large enough to offset random error sampling and
would approximate the Gausian distribution in terms of population
representation (good external and internal validity).

Now, suppose we split both groups exactly in half so we get 4
groups. Random assignment is used for within group splitting.

Suppose all 4 groups listen to a song or an album that's not been
heard before by anyone (for sake of argument, even though this may
not be possible). Each group is asked to rate the song or album in
terms of how much they like it (using a valid and reliable scale
theoretically). They are all allowed to listen to the song or album
only 3 times in succession (we could create more groups while varying
this independent variable (number of times listening to a song) but I
won't make it complicated right now). The dependent variable
(likeability) would be on a ratio scale (zero scale). Here's how I
would like to define each group:

Group A - Identified Rahman fans who are told that the song or album
is by Rahman, but not yet released publically.

Group B - Identified Rahman fans who are told that the song or album
is by a new composer not yet established in the industry.

Group C - Casual music fans who are told that the song or album is by
Rahman, but not yet released publically.

Group D - Casual music fans who are told that the song or album is by
a new composer not yet established in the industry.

In terms of results, I would of course predict that group A would
rate the album or song highest. However, I would be most interested
to know the difference between Group A and Group B. I hypthosize
that Group A would be higher. Also would be interested to know the
difference between Group A and C. I predict no significant group
differences between Group B and Group D.

This experiment is strictly hypothetical. I realize how difficult it
would be to pull this off in reality.

good this is partially what i was trying to say in one of my earlier

Then, your worries already stand allayed for Oscar. ARR wudn't be the
first Indian to get it. Bhanu Athaiya is the first Indian to have got it
3 decades ago.

In any case, a particular year's award are considered as a single
"first". I don't think anyone can keep track of the sequence in which
people receive the awards, so anyone getting it in a particular year are
all "firsts".

London: Adding yet another feather in his cap, music maestro Allah Rakha Rahman
on Sunday bagged the BAFTA Award in the best music score category for Slumdog
Millionaire at a gala event in London.

After becoming the first Indian to win the Golden Globe and getting a triple
Oscar nomination in two categories for the same movie, Rahman, 43, is the first
Indian musician to win the BAFTA Award.

Apart from Rahman, Resul Pookutty was the other Indian to win a BAFTA Award for
Best Sound editing for Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman's composition Jai Ho for British director Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire, earned him the Critics Choice Award for Best Composer in 2008 and
the Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Score.

Rahman, born in Chennai on January 6, 1966, has been nominated in the Best
Original Score and Best Original Song categories for two of his compositions --
Jai Ho and O Saya at the Oscar.

[arr] A tribute to ARR on Indiafm

2009-02-09 Thread Chord
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/features/2009/02/09/4829/index.html

By Verve, February 9, 2009 - 17:46 IST

Hollywood's bigwigs let out a collective twitter of nervous laughter
when A. R. Rahman took the stage for his Golden Globe win. It was
probably because they couldn't wrap their tongue around his name,
mispronouncing it no less than three times but the humble maestro,
gracious as always, acknowledged his surprise and gratitude at
receiving the award by thanking the Slumdog Millionaire team and
India's billion strong.

Rahman has had a predictably busy year working on Ghajini and
Yuvvraaj's soundtracks among others and completed the masterly record
in very little time. The movie, accused of packaging romanticized
poverty to First World audiences that are equally guilty of lapping it
up, is rich in its eclectic score. The glocal vibes have him
collaborating with M.I.A., Gulzar, Ila Arun, Alka Yagnik, Suzzanne
D'Mello, known for her Western approach to singing and rap artist
Blaaze. So, compelling is the story and the soundtrack that
screenwriter Simon Beaufoy wants to make a musical of it.

The movie about a boy from the slums who wins a fortune on India's
version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Launched many faces but it
brought Rahman the international recognition he so deserved. The
musician's first success came with Mani Ratnam's Roja which even made
Time magazine's list of 100 best movie compilations in the world. His
tunes stand out for their longevity. In an industry that's sometimes
stifled by the demands of playback music, Rahman's syncopations have
managed to go off the beaten track and garnered both critical and
popular acclaim.

It isn't hard to believe that two of the artiste's most appreciated
soundtracks in recent times come from underdog movies Guru and Slumdog
Millionaire. Young Rahman had a musically rich upbringing, but after
his composer father R K Shekhar's premature death, the family had to
rent out instruments to make ends meet and the maverick ventured into
music making himself. "It's a very strange thingactually going
back to my childhood story. I experienced most of the disappointments
in my life at that time. So whatever happens now, I suspect that hope,
I always suspect that happiness. And even that moment of happiness
doesn't exist because am waiting for how it's going to fool me and
give me a kick again."

The impossibly mild mannered and soft-spoken composer had a hard time
escaping the shadows of his keyboard at first. "I have to deliver my
music to the public. Slowly, changed myself and started singing and
began to extend myself as much as could... to the limits that could
go. But I'm still not comfortable." And it's a good thing he did too.
His visceral rendition of Vande Mataram earned him the wrath of a few
old schoolers but brought out a previously dormant patriotic zeal in
the younger generation.

The Mozart of Madras' repertoire includes recent epic Jodhaa Akbar,
coming-of-age flicks like Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na and work on
international productions like Elizabeth: The Golden Age and The Lord
of the Rings musical. His win doesn't mean he's kicking back though.
He's already in Chennai working late into the night on a Rajnikanth
production. "I'm very restless during the day because there are so
many things happening. It's very distracting. I work from three p.m.
to early morning. When I have mixing to do, I start as late as seven
in the evening. Then sleep till noon. But this is only when I'm in
Chennai; not when abroad; there, work times are more regular."

That Rahman has stood the litmus test is evidenced by the fact that
his tunes linger on long after the movies they were associated with
fade to the recesses of the mind. Strongly inclined towards
philanthropy, the genius established the A. R. Rahman Foundation and
continues to work with it to rid the world of poverty. At the time
this article was written, he had earned a BAFTA nomination and three
Oscar nominations and a win seems only imminent. The accolades are
paving a new path for him. It doesn't much matter then that a former
alien-chasing FBI agent called him Reh-moon at the GG's, his melodies
win over The X-Files any day of the week.

Subject: [arr] I am scared

I am scared that I might have to wait for months and even an year for a single
a album of Rahman.

I am scared that I have to wait even longer for original compositions in Tamil,
or even Hindi. Will have to get used to Original tracks in English, French,
Spanish, Persian, Chinese and so on.

I am scared that I have to wait even longer for the India release of
the album, movie and DVD and might have to just rely on Gopal's Amazon
links.

I am scared that Madhushree will now be singing in English.

I am scared that all of a sudden an ARR album will cost Rs.500.

I am scared that Vithur and other rippers will be sued for ripping the BGM a
month before the original release.

I am scared that the new, young, bold and innovative directors of India might
be scared to approach Rahman seeing the Spielbergs, Maniratnams, Mehras,
Shyamalans, Tarantinos, Wachowskis, Scoreseses and so on, at the A.M Studio.

I am scared that Rahman will now have critics "for the sake of criticism" from
all over the world.

I am scared that next time I attend Rahman's concert I might be only able to
afford a seat at least 543 rows back.

I am scared that Yahoo might send a notice to Gopal and Vijay for clogging
Yahoo's bandwidth.

Yes. I am seriously scared that Oscars will win Rahman!

For the first time in life, I am happy to be scared!!

Pals..

I really wonder why ARR has not exploited much of Ghazal songs in his career.
Is this because of the subjects that he chose so far are not appropriate for
Ghazals?? I ve heard people linking "Udhaya Udhaya Ularugiren..." from the
movie Udhaya to Ghazal..!!! Is this ARR's sole Ghazal? or "Na Shiqwa Hota..."
from Tehzeeb can also be considered in this genre? Please list me his Ghazal
numbers if any...!!!

[arr] Can’t Stop This Train - 9 Oscars predicted for SDM

2009-02-09 Thread Sriram S

http://www.awardsdaily.com/?p=6964#more-6964

At the Oscars, it will take in a cake walk: Picture, Director, Screenplay,
Score.
It should also take: Score, Editing (although we haven’t heard from the ACE).
It may take, if it’s a sweep: Sound, Sound Editing and Song.
That would give it nine Oscar wins.  At this point, it wouldn’t surprise me

Can’t Stop This TrainAuthor: Sasha Stone
8 Feb

AP Photo
The excitement in the air was palpable as every time anyone mentioned anything
to do with Slumdog Millionaire, cheers and applause erupted from the hall.
This was a time for celebration and everyone seemed happy at the BAFTAs, even
the losers, locked into the loser-cam for their painful ten seconds of fake
smiling.  The star of the night was Mickey Rourke, who has a kind of magnetic
giantness about him, like he’s physically too big for the room.  He seemed
almost like a live action figure stepping into the land of the animated.  And
he was funny.  Accidentally but unmistakenly funny.  He brought the house down,
very nearly upstaging the special guest of the night, Mick Jagger.

AP Photo
The big question now will be how close with the Oscars match the BAFTAs.  In
the past few years the actors have matched up well.  But who’s to say in the
time between then and next week that feelings might have changed.  Will the
sound, cinematography and score all go Slumdog’s way?
Original Screenplay is a best guess at best at this point; there is no telling
which way that one will go.  The BAFTAs say In Bruges, the WGA says Milk.  But
there is Wall-E and Frozen River and even Happy-Go-Lucky waiting.  It is more
wide open than any other category, and especially so since it’s usually easy to
predict it.

AP Photo
Penelope Cruz seems to have taken the lead in the supporting actress race but
that one is also anyone’s game, since Kate Winslet cast such a strong shadow in
the thick of the race, taking things over from the frontrunner Cruz.  Now, Cruz
has bobbed back up to the surface, aided by a newly invigorated Harvey
Weinstein, who stood very plainly on camera as Penelope won.  Kate Winslet gave
her a hug on the way up.  Weinstein was having a good night.
The big question of this race isn’t whether Slumdog will win but how much will
it win.  With the loveable and absurdly talented Danny Boyle there, sincere and
humble, with his son standing up and cheering in the middle of his speech, “I
love you, dad!”  You want to just wrap yourself up in a pile of mewling kittens
it’s so goddamned cute, all of it.  So yeah, no stories of poverty porn or
unpaid child actors are going to derail this one.  This train is on the fast
track and most people aren’t going to complain.  Slumdog took a total of 7
BAFTA awards.
At this point, it wouldn’t surprise me.
The BAFTAs didn’t particularly want to spread the wealth that much, the actors
went ass over elbow, it’s all over but the shouting.  Slumdog should take at
least seven Oscars.  At least.
But it’s hard to not think about Rourke, who made everyone laugh with almost
every line of his speech.  It was perfect for the occasion, it might have
perked up some bored awards watchers, and it gives Oscar voters something to
look forward to.  On the other hand, there is Sean Penn in one of his best
performances.  It’s a tough call that one..  If speeches matter, if the BAFTA
matters, Rourke has it in the bag.
If Rourke wins, and Slumdog and Kate Winslet -  it will be a season of happy
endings.  Rourke back from the brink, Kate Winslet finally winning and Slumdog
Millionaire and its scrappy, deserving crew - collecting award after award in
an unprecedented march to the finish

It's high time Rahman bought down his BO flop count, unless it's a movies

I can instantly remember these. .

Mayya Mayya(Arabic) in Mayya Mayya - Guru

Marhabaan(Arabic) in Oorvasi - Kaadalan

Baila Baila . . . and  more (Spanish) in Jai Ho - SDM

French lyrics in Taxi Taxi - Sakkarakatti

The starting piece in Akkadannu (Chinese?) - Indian

Baila(Spanish) in Baila More - Kadhal Virus

Injirango(Sinhalese ?) in Injirango - Thenali

Signore Signore (Sinhalese?) in Kannathil Muththamittal

Well English is no more a foreign language to India.

[arr] Zakir Hussain wants an Oscar for Rahman

2009-02-09 Thread Bivin Chandra

After winning a Grammy in the contemporary World Music Album category for his
collaborative album Global Drum Project, Zakir Hussain says that he sincerely
desires that A R Rahman wins an Oscar.

On being asked to respond to Rahman's global recognition for Slumdog
Millionaire, Zakir Hussain said that, "He is a genius. I think his talent has
been duly recognised now and I am very happy with that. The best thing about
him is that he has consistently proved himself. He is not a one time wonder. He
has delivered consistently. He has really made us feel very proud. I hope he
does equally fantastic at the Oscars. "

Talking about his own achievements he says that he is very excited on his
achievement because it was a competition with the great musicians of the
contemporary world music.

"I look at this win as the reaffirmation of my hard work. This second time
Grammy recognition is the witness of the fact that in today s modern world I
have not fallen behind times. I am up-to-date in creative contemporary world of
music. I am extremely happy and satisfied with this achievement," said Zakir.

Zakir Hussain worked with Mickey Hart of the rock band Grateful Dead, Nigerian
percussionist Sikiru Adepoju and Puerto Rican jazz percussionist Giovanni
Hidalgo for the album.

Global Drum Project is the second collaboration between Hart and Hussain. Their
compilation Planet Drum which was released in 1991 went on to win the
first-ever Grammy Award in the World Music category.

Asked if he would have felt more satisfactory, had it been a win for a purely
Indian project, he said, "It's true that Global Drum Project is a collaborative
work with western musicians. I will be happier if a pure Indian project wins a
Grammy sometime in future. Till now the only purely India project which claimed
Grammy glory was Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt's work."

Urdu is a foreign language? It is an official language of Indian
Government.
To add to the list -

French lyrics in the title song of Delhi 6.

Rahman is using lot of French these days. I love it though.

[arr] ARR got BAFTA - well, it was expected :-)

2009-02-09 Thread V S Rawat
on reading in this list that our man got BAFTA, my first reaction was:

Well, it was expected.
.
.
.
.
And then I laughed on myself. I had heard of SDM sometime in Oct 2008,
and came to know of Jai Ho song on Nov 1 when I posted messages on orkut
groups to know more about this song.

That meant it had not even been four months that I knew about the movie.
And, the same movie and its music getting so many prestigious
international awards now brings the response "it is expected".
.
.
.
.
That is the great contribution of our man to the psyche of Indians.

So many prestigious international recognitions that we could only wish
and hope for, but couldn't really think possible to get, as early as
just four months ago, today Indians are thinking, yeah, he (ARR) can do
it, an Indian can do it, Indians can do it.

That is the great contribution of our man to the psyche of Indians.

He has broken our shackles.

He has widened our perspectives.

He has changed our paradigms.

He has brought India to International stage.

.
.
.

Now, India is world class.

Now, the world knows about Indian's capabilities in these fields.

Now, many other Indians would get such awards and honors and recognitions.

Thanks to our man for it all.

You are the torchbearer.

May God bless you.
