hey... the world knows abt ARRs music and its greatness. we dont need to
discuss it and prove it to the people who doesnt want to understand it. ARR
is showered with awards both from west and India and it is the testimony for
ARRs credibility in the music field. as we know, ARRs achievements speak for
himself. the discussion to figure out who is best is almost always endless.
let those relentless people keep comparing; why do we need to? there are
quite a lot of things in store for us in 2009. so, lets look forward to
that.

[arr] Re: All Credit to God

2009-04-01 Thread Vajra
Pulkesi, whose blog I first posted this response, finally replied:

Very contradicting indeed! the passage between the first revelation and the
last statement defies the purpose of not to make comparisons. Pondering over
the text in the passage, it clearly indicates the comparisons being made by the
perceptions and notions that one `explanatory system' has created over another
kind of `explanatory system' which has been created by the others and tries to
drive home a point of `worthlessness' of the others system and commands them to
look inside not outside according to their system. huh.

Words are very tricky indeed and these slips are bound to happen when we
are living in the world of words. Foolishness yes - but what else do you and me
are doing here. You call me a `fool', comparing your understanding over
something. I dare to call Rahman incompetent in comparison to Raaja. So what.
You have the choice of either proving me wrong with reasonable `words' or get
into the textual jargons of `Advaitha' spewing venom or simply sitback looking
within yourself and meditate. You post because you want to say something. The
moment you say something it becomes contrived from what this cosmos is really
about. But we perform exactly in this continuum with no other choice. So lets
Debate and get it over.

Does it seem silly to you when someone says my moms food tastes better than
any other food because of love? Does it seem silly to you when a women appeals
more in showering their love on us and we feel blessed - `comparing' with other
loveless souls or womens who did not appeal to us? If yes, so be it for you.

Yet you wont understand the comparisons dwelling deep inside you… Why
Mozart? why not Salieri? Why Rahman's composition are a study material for you?
why not `Deva's? How silly is it to write about Rahman's genius while ignoring
the genius of Deva?

Why do you add `Great' before the composer word here? Why cant `he' be a
composer alone? or a Genius alone? With who else did you compare to call them
`Great'? So what if the revelation to the genius great composer `Sirpi' came
from multiple resources in `Ullaththai AllithA', Which illusion of yours is
stopping you from recognizing it? The same illusion is stopping me to recognize
Rahman in the same lines of Raaja as a genius. Period.

-

I replied,

-

Good point about mom's food being better than any other food because of the
love within it. By which, you mean to say that anyone's attributing genius, or
measure of genius onto another, will always be a subjective enterprise… it can
never be a scientific undertaking. In other words, genius shall always only be
a matter of opinion - this is where your point leads.

I, for one, look to the sparks of genius, and indeed, Ullathai Allitha would
have been a work of genius by Sirpi if it wasn't for the fact that the songs
were lifted off some hindi and arabic albums/soundtracks. But then, rather than
that, let's consider "Malare Mounama" by Vidyasagar… which to my knowledge is
an original work (relatively speaking - for what is truly original?) - and
therein lies the point…

During a writing seminar the keynote speaker, Billy Marshall Stoneking so
succinctly expressed that "Where the work's origins intersect with the artist's
origins, it produces that extraordinary and timeless freshness we so clumsily
refer to as ORIGIN-ALITY."

Bearing this in mind, what becomes uproariously evident is that anyone who
strives to create art with integrity, with genuineness and an unbending
passion, will surely have sparks of originality.

For this very reason, I do not denounce any artist, any creator… I focus on the
work much more than I focus on the artist… because in the end the artist is
merely a vessel and it is God who is creating the art.

For this very reason, it is always better to be open, embracing, and be ready
to find genius in the most surprising of places.

What you are doing rather, is being so hell-bent on building a fort around what
you call classy artwork, that you are infact locking yourself in.

Or in other words, so adamant to believe that only mother's cooking is best,
that suddenly its no longer about love - but about fanaticism.

For in, essence, your claim is simply that God works only through Illaiyaraja.
For some reason, God cannot come through anyone else, cannot create art in any
other way… no one else is open enough… is that so? Or is it that you have
blinders on, possibly?

The Genius is God's. You cannot call Illaiyaraja a genius for being more open
(which, at the most, is all he is doing). The word, genius, is in fact
misleading when it is considered in those terms, for it is discrediting the
actual source of inspiration.

Your second point that was also very valid was the question of why I am chosing
to devote my time to certain composers over others… especially after talking
about

[arr] Rahman's Oscar Win Was a Great Moment for All Indians

2009-04-01 Thread Vithur
Rahman's Oscar Win Was a Great Moment for All Indians
April 01, 2009

  By KS Vijay Elangova

IT HAS been a proud and exhilarating moment for all Indians living in Derry.

Our AR Rahman has won two Oscars for the film Slumdog Millionaire in the
Best Original Score and Best Song (for the song Jai Ho! in the film)
categories. It has been a scintillating performance from the hardest working
musician in Asia.

My association with him began in 2000 when I met him to score for our film
Popcarn, which I scripted along with the talented actor Nasser. By that time
AR Rahman was already famous all over Asia.

The film was offbeat and involved a radical classical dancer and a radical
folk musician. They were living personalities who were very eccentric. The
dancer was, of course, the much-acclaimed Chandrlekha who had done a lot of
radical work in the dance format, and the folk singer was Gunasekar, who
sings folk songs with modern accompaniments.

The film was about what happens when they get married. (Of course they did
not act in the film. The great Malayalam actor Mohanlal and talented actress
Simran donned their roles).

We had been meeting AR Rahman to score for the film. But he was booked up
for the rest of the year and wanted us to wait for some time. And we could
not wait. We roped in Yuvan Shanakar Raja, son of great Illayaraja for whom
AR Rahman played keyboard for almost seven years, to score for the film.

But my meeting with AR Rahaman was memorable. I met a man who was very
humble and unassuming and (he was only a few years older than me) who was
bustling with a lot of energy. He was also a God- fearing and
family-oriented man. He worked every day right through the night. He
recorded songs during the wee hours of the night.

He evinced a lot of interest in my poetry. I loved him the moment I met with
him.

His journey into music began even when he was a very young child. Originally
he was born into a Tamil Hindu family in Chennai. He was named AS Dileep
Kumar. His father RK Sekar was a music director in Malayalam movies, but
died when the child was only nine. But by then he infused a lot of music
into the young boy's mind.

In 1989, his sister was very ill and she did not respond to any treatment.
The family went to a mosque and prayed and she was miraculously cured!

Following this the entire family converted to Islam. AS Dileep Kumar became
AR Rahman.

His musical journey began when he was brought in to score for ace director
Maniratnam's film Roja. AR Rahman won the national award for music for his
very first film.

Times magazine in London listed the film as one of the top 10 ever for
original tracks. From then onward, he never looked back.

His journey to the West began in 2002, when he composed his maiden stage
production Bombay Dreams (2002) following a commission from musical theatre
composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

With Finnish folk music band Varttina, he wrote the music for The Lord of
the Rings theatre production and in 2004 Rahman composed the piece "Raga's
Dance" for Vanessa-Mae's album Choreography.

It has all culminated in two Oscars for him. I hope he goes on winning more
laurels for India. He dedicates all his awards to God and his mother. He
often says, "All glory is to God and mother without whom nothing is
possible."

True to the words. He is God's own child. I salute him for his genius and I
salute him for his friendship.

[arr] Sunita Williams, A.R. Rahman role models for young Indians: PM

2009-04-01 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $

London, April 1 (IANS) Astronaut Sunita Williams and Oscar-winning music
composer A.R. Rahman are among the role models for young Indians who are
driving a “society on the move”, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says.
“Our youth are fortunate today to have a wide variety of role models from the
fields of education, science and technology, sports, art and culture, social
development and business and enterprise,” he said in an interview published
Wednesday.

“India is a society on the move. The energy of our youth is driving this nation
to new heights and they seek inspiration from so many great achievers,” he told
the Financial Times.

“Some of them in fact live outside India, like the woman astronaut Sunita
Williams, an Indian American, who has inspired young girls in our villages to
study science.

“Recently millions of our youth were enthused when our musician A.R. Rehman got
two Oscars for composing music for a British film!” he added.

To make things even more exciting, McG begged Warner Brothers to go the

Muzzafar Ali whose last film, Umrao Jaan, was released in 1981, is now
casting for another historical, Noor Jehan Jehangir [image: Muzzafar

Muzzafar Ali

Muzaffar Ali, who last made Umrao Jaan (1981) is ready to come back to
Bollywood with a historical, based on the life of Emperor Jehangir . Called
Noor Jehan Jehangir (working title ) it traces the love story of Noor Jehan
and Jehangir.

So what kept Ali away from films for so long I wasnt away from films, says
Ali. In the interim I made Anjuman which did not release outside UP and
Zooni was never completed. I have also been developing an international film
which is in the process of being cast with international actors. I have
completed 23 drafts of the story so far.

The script of Jehangir has been sent to one of todays new young actors and
what is remarkable about the script, besides the content , is the
presentation . The script is bound in rich embossed leather and comes in its
own cloth wrapping with Alis Kotwara design in leather on it. Kotwara is the
designer line that Muzaffar and Meera Ali own.

Will Muzaffar be able to cope with an industry that has changed dramatically
since he made his last film Why should I fit in, I am much ahead of
Bollywood. It is they who have to fit in with me, he says with a chuckle.

Alis peeve is that todays actors are scared of period films and todays
directors dont understand the intricacies of period films, though he admits
that Jodhaa Akbar and Hrithik Roshan got a lot of the details right. The
nuances have to be very subtle and layered, he explains.

For the music of the film, Shankar Ehsaan Loy have been spoken to though AR
Rahman was also an option. But Rahman, who is the greatest musician we have
today, has just done Jodhaa Akbar.

Ali bemoans the lack of good production design in Bollywood. Most period
films look like a nautanki, he says dismissively. For someone who got
everything in Umrao Jaan just right, he has a right to comment . All
Jehangir needs now is the right actors with the right sort of passion for
the film.

[arr] ‘I miss those life-changing lyrics!’-ARR

2009-04-01 Thread Bivin Chandra
He has proved that music may have languages but not boundaries. Here’s the
reticent A.R.Rahman, who has left no award unturned in the last six months, in
a midnight chat from Chennai that brims with rare candourFor two years in
succession, you have clinched both the Best Music and Best Background Music
Screen trophies. What do you have to say about this unique achievement?
I always feel that nothing can be planned, and sometimes things just fall into
place! Just a few years ago, a lot of things seemed to be going off-track. Mani
Ratnam’s Lajjo, Shyam Benegal’s Chamki and Krishna Shah’s Baiju and one or two
other musicals were wonderful subjects that inspired me then - and none of them
even took off! On the other hand, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na that got me your Best
Music trophy this year was almost shelved - till Aamir Khan took over its
production. Last year, a lot of my films came all together - Jaane Tu...,
Jodhaa Akbar, Yuvvraaj, the music of Ada, Ghajini and then Slumdog Millionaire.
So I have stopped expecting anything in life. If good things happen, it’s okay,
but if they don’t, at least you are not frustrated! (Laughs).Do two background
music trophies indicate that the background score is gaining more importance
nowadays?
Background music is something that needs ten times more energy than making
songs. You can do songs for four more films in the time you take for composing
a background music score for just one movie! In the West, they are amazed that
in Indian films the same person composes both the songs and the background
score. But over here, whether it was Naushadsaab in Hindi films, Ilayaraja down
here or most other composers, we have had this tradition almost as a culture.
Speaking for myself, I like to do both and it is about my credibility and
sometimes when I get both right, it is a great high for me!Why do you use the
word “sometimes”? Why are you so modest, almost Bachchan-esquely so, in your
statements?
I have so much to learn and so much to achieve. And things can go wrong despite
hard work so often. You can’t orchestrate results and the magic just happens
sometimes. When it does, every aspect of the film and the music blends
together, sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally!“Unintentionally”!
Well, sometimes you are trying to do your part right and it may or may not
happen. Or things can just go wrong elsewhere. Just one slip - like in an
expression on the face of one actor, or in the way a director expresses
himself, or even some technical point can prevent everything from falling in
place. So when everything turns out perfect, as in my Tu hi re in Bombay or as
in Pyar kiya to darna kya in Mughal-E-Azam, you feel blessed like an
angel.Gulzarsaab tells us that you light a candle when your singer enters the
recording cabin. Have you always done this?
I began to do it after my first visit to Khwaja Gharib Nawaz at Ajmer Sharif.
The candles lit there have an effect I cannot describe. In my studio too, it is
so inspirational and organic amidst all the electronic gadgets. He also tells us
that over the decade since you first worked with him in Dil Se, you have
become much more familiar with the Hindi film mijaaz or temperament. Would you
agree?
I have become more conscious of the language. Subhash (Ghai)ji and some others
made me conscious about that when I began working with them. I always had this
belief that music has no language and that a tune could be converted by
extraordinary lyrics into a great song in any language. But Subhashji taught me
otherwise. In Taal, Anand Bakshisaab wrote most of the lyrics before I made the
tunes. The same was the case with The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and Sameerji. I
realised that you cannot express certain words just anyhow.. The elongation of
syllables or of words - the syntax, that is - is something that is peculiar to
every language. So I am learning Urdu for the last 2-3 years and my Hindi
vocabulary is also up by 40-50 per cent! And did that also apply to English?
English was easier for me, though when I took up Bombay Dreams, I did not know
whether I could pull it off. But I managed, I think, though the first song,
Journey home, was already made before I took up the project. And with the
passage of years, as you get the time to evolve and be more of yourself, you
begin to learn which song to hold back, even if you have liked it yourself,
when you are offering a director your compositions. How upsetting is it when a
film like Delhi - 6 does not work and your music does not get its due?
Initially I would find such a contingency very painful, but now I have learnt
to be detached. I explained to myself that the next assignment is waiting and
that you can’t spoil it by brooding on this but should aim to score there
instead! With Rakeyshji, I was very happy with both Rang De Basanti and
Delhi-6, but when a film does not work I think that all of us should admit that
we have gone wrong some

[arr] If you don't like Rahman, simple, I don't like you. :) :)

2009-04-01 Thread Vithur
On the day A R Rahman received
the
Golden Globe Award, I decided that, if Rahman went on to win the
Oscars,
I would blog about My Top 10 Favorite A R Rahman tracks. So here they are.

The first comment I received from most of my friends, is that, Top 10 is too
small a thing to contain the full Rahman. Even the Oscars had to catch up so
late, so what can you say about an upstart blogger's ad-hoc listings ? So so
true, I knew it before I listed them. When I pulled a piece of paper and
went on to scribble 'top-of-mind-recall' tracks, the list came to 35, in the
first two minutes. Yet, there are so many Top 10
lists,
let me just add one more. Not that my list matters, particularly since my
music sense is well-documented on this blog
before.
But after all, as Munnabhai put
it,
apun public hai public, kya ?

If you don't like Rahman, simple, I don't like you. :) :) . But, since the
world is so vast and has unnecessary room for all of us, and I also want to
pride about balanced perspectives even when they are irrelvant, I still have
stuff for people who don't like his music: I'll make a mention of the few
things that I don't like about ARR's music, towards the end. It so happens,
some of my favorites in this list are from Tamil, because I also relate to
the lyrics. But, I am sure, most of these are equally enjoyable in their
Hindi and Telugu or even Swahili equivalents.

10. Kannum kannum kollai adithal...
The Artham Song from Thiruda Thiruda

I can only start from the time I started listening to A R Rahman's music.
Unlike so many others who proudly mention today that they knew him from the
good old days when he was known as Dileep, like
thismovie director I had
dinner with. I arrived rather late into that world.
Life had been busy, juggling between college, part-time/summer jobs, service
activities and competitive exams. I hadn't watched movies for the previus 7
years. The comfort of touching a 4-digit salary for the first time
(particularly when you started with 2-digits) allows you certain
indulgences. Roja,
in all its glory, had come and gone, taking the music world by storm while I
was busy in chinna chinna velai. I would catch up with it later.

I was staying at my friend's place, who was preparing for PG Medical
Entrance and I was surprised to see that, about once in two hours or so, he
would, take a break, play a couple of songs, jump around and get back to
serious study. One of them was, Kannum kannum kollai adithal. It's exam
time, try it out, may be with companion track, Putham pudhu bhoomi
vendum.
When I last heard, my friend had made it big, both in medicine and in music.
:) :) If you try it with some other song, I am not responsible. (As if
otherwise I am).

9. Radha Kaise Na

If you are still under the myth that Rahman is all about Shivamani's drums
and western-sounding music, you should hear this kiddu song from Indira,

I miss those life-changing lyrics!’-A +AFontRajiv VijayakarPosted: Apr 03, 2009
at 1541 hrs ISTPrintEmailNewsletterPost CommentsRSSHe has proved that music may
have languages but not boundaries. Here’s the reticent A.R.Rahman, who has left
no award unturned in the last six months, in a midnight chat from Chennai that
brims with rare candourFor two years in succession, you have clinched both the
Best Music and Best Background Music Screen trophies. What do you have to say
about this unique achievement?
I explained to myself that the next assignment is waiting and
that you can’t spoil it by brooding on this but should aim to score there
instead! With Rakeyshji, I was very happy wi

 *Trailer*:

*The Movie Itself* won many “*Oscars*” this year, namely *Best
Picture*. “*Slumdog
Millionaire*” was Directed by (now *Academy Award* winner) *Danny Boyle*,
and Co-Directed by *Loveleen Tandan*, with the writing credits of *Simon
Beaufoy* (screenplay) and based on the novel by *Vikas Swarup*. The story
tells that of an 18-year-old orphan named “*Jamal Malik*” (played by *Dev
Patel*) from the slum streets of Mumbai, India. The boy lives a very rough
life along with his brother “*Salim*” on the streets and eventually meets a
girl named “*Latika*” who he falls in love with a very young age. The boy’s
brother Salim and friend Latika both disppear from his life due to a local
crime lord. Fast forward to the present where Jamal is age 18 and becomes a
contestant on the Indian version of the popular game show “*Who Wants to be
A Millionaire?*“, where he ends up winning 20 million rupees. There’s only
one problem here, when the show takes a break for the night, the local
police arrest Jamal claiming that he has cheated. The boy claims that he
simply knew the answers and it was fate. What follows is Jamal telling his
life story of living on the streets, losing his brother and love interest
(Latika). Jamal is reunited with both his brother, Salim, and former love
interest Latika later on in the film which is very moving.

Overall, “*Slumdog Millionaire*“, that *Danny Boyle* and his fellow
filmmakers have made here is something that is very simplistic and
semi-believable but at the same time is something that I cannot really
explain in huge detail in my synopsis for the film without having felt I
have given away some of the film — in terms of spoilers. I’ll just say that
this film deserved all the “*Oscar*” (*Academy Award*) nominations and wins.
It’s a definite “*MUST-SEE*” film of last year and is very happily welcomed
to *Blu-ray Disc*.

*Video Quality* on this release is in full 1080p using the *AVC
MPEG-4*codec on a
*BD-50* (50 gigabyte, dual-layered *Blu-ray Disc*) in the 2.35:1 aspect
ratio.

The most important thing to note going in to watching this wonderful motion
picture is that it was filmed on many different types of cameras using both
film and HDTV digital recording methods. If you’d like to learn a bit more
on this, be sure to check out *IMDb’s aspect ratio tech
listing*.
With this being the case, you are obviously going to see a large variety of
video quality from scene to scene throughout the film. A bit of this may
have been intentional to convey the unique type of visual style but it does
seem to mainly be a case of the variety of source mater

The Film

Now that Slumdog Millionaire swept most of the categories it was nominated for
at this year’s Oscar ceremony, I was able to watch the film again on DVD, and
let my gripes rest. I must be honest. In my news report and my weekly rants on
the podcasts, whenever I mentioned this movie, it was all negative. I still
feel it was far from the best film of the year, but I did genuinely enjoy
myself when I saw it for the first time. I strongly considered decreasing my
rating, but no matter how much I disagreed with the amount of statues it took
home, the film was indeed well made and thoroughly compelling. The following is
my original review.

For the majority of moviegoers all over the world, seeing the real India is not
common on the big screen. Occasionally a film is released, but rarely does its
popularity increase enough to show people what the country is actually like.
Slumdog Millionaire reveals India in its true form, the beauty and the
ugliness. This is an adventure of the highest caliber, and a pinnacle for
Director Danny Boyle. It will agitate a wide range of emotions deep within you
to the surface. You will smile, clench your fists, turn your head in fear, and
maybe even shed a tear or two. It is a joyously unique take on an electrifying
story.

As Slumdog Millionaire opens, Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) has already won
10,000,000 rupees on the Indian version of the game show Who Wants to be a
Millionaire. We the viewers are even asked a question as one would be as a
contestant, but I’ll leave that for you to discover. Jamal grew up as a boy
from the slums of Mumbai, and would be on the run most of his life. How could
he be answering all these questions correctly when those of higher education
had never attained that level? He must be cheating. To prove this, the Police
Inspector (Irfan Khan) and his Sergeant interrogate and torture him to dig out
the truth. He claims he just knew the answers, and proceeds to express various
instances in his life which relate to the questions he received. This journey
takes him through many adventures with his brother Salim, numerous villains,
and the love of his life Latika.

The manner in which Slumdog Millionaire is woven together is what makes the
story so enthralling and entertaining. The questions become stories, and the
stories act as a tale from childhood to that of a young man still searching for
his impossible romance. The plot threads lace around one another in such a
glorious and organic way that the suspense becomes maddening, and that is a
good thing. The characters we encounter along Jamal’s path to the chair make a
lasting impact because of what they mean in terms of the money he is building
and the advances in difficulty. You’ll be surprised at how much you remember
since this is divided into sections, but those sections uncoil as one fine
piece of work.

This is a movie that is sure to make strides with luring more viewers into
watching a story with subtitles. It has that in common with Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon and Pan’s Labyrinth. To be honest, this includes many scenes with
the cast exchanging in English, but a huge chunk is communicated in Hindi
subtitles, albeit very creative and colorful ones, and this could easily serve
as an introductory film for those contemplating that leap into enjoying a full
film in a different language. This will attract people of any language because
its themes are universal: rags to riches and love.

Singling out specific actors in this picture is not easy since the three main
characters of Jamal, Latika, and Salim are played by three different performers
of varying ages. And everyone possesses chemistry like a unit. If anyone is
deserving of individual praise it is Dev Patel, who portrays the older Jamal,
and sits i

A R Rehman to compose for Ashoka *By: **Hanumant
Bhansali*

Raj Kumar Santoshi has roped in music composer A R Rehman to do the
background score for Ashoka.

Says Santoshi, “The film will have no songs, but a background score by the
“epic specialist” A R Rahman.”

Rehman has earlier done music in period films like Lagaan, Zubeidaa, Jodhaa-
Akbar and Legend Of Bhagat Singh.

[arr] The Genius Of A R Rahman [ A Must See Pic ]

The Genius Of A R Rahman
Text by BARADWAJ RANGAN and Photographs by BAJIRAO PAWAR

HOW DID HE GET HERE? AND WHERE DOES HE GO FROM HERE?

HOW COULD A R RAHMAN become the first Indian musician to hold an Oscar? This
rhetorical question arises from the signs, over the years, that if the genius
from Chennai found his way to global recognition, it would be through the
Grammies. That was the international award I thought he'd win first, this
restless pop-rock explorer whose far-flung voyages of musical introspection
have consistently reshaped the landscape of the film song. There was the
unmatched finish in his albums, for instance — the kind of sonic spit-polish
we've encountered only in international records. Then there were the influences
that shaped Rahman — Osibisa, Jim Reeves, Switched-On Bach, Chick Corea,
Vangelis and Dave Grusin, none of which appear, at least at first glance,
capable of being co-opted into the traditional five-minute film song.
Even Rahman's early days — the days leading up to August 1992, when the sounds
of Roja exploded in Tamil Nadu, causing fissures and cracks in the existing
compositional model (the symphonic orchestral model, exemplified by the
monolithic might of Ilayaraja), and the eventual breaking away of a new musical
subcontinent — pointed not so much towards a film composer as some sort of
incipient rock star. First, Rahman's classmates roped him into a band for
inter-school cultural competitions, introducing him to rock and Deep Purple and
Pink Floyd. Then came Roots, the band Rahman formed with musicians like
Sivamani, where he procured sequencing gear and began to compose experimental
pieces. Then L Shankar came calling, asking Rahman to back his band, Epidemics.
Rahman even complained in an interview to Rolling Stone India, a little over a
year ago, about the lack of opportunity in the pre-Roja days, coming off like a
sweaty little man whose palms were callused from pushing against a giant
boulder. "It was frustrating. It was only film music. To liberate yourself from
this and go to another space was impossible. A normal person would never relate
to what we wanted to play." And look at him now, cradling two Academy Awards in
his arms in the manner of a proud father posing with newborn twins. It's still
only "film music" — but he has liberated it and gone into the other space he so
desired, the global pop-rock space. And, miracle of miracles, the "normal
people" he referred to, those willing slaves to traditional models of film
music, have snapped their shackles. They now wave cigarette lighters in unison
with Rahman's rhythms.
I would be lying if I said I saw this moment. It was the Eighties. Hindi film
music was, for a large part, stricken by drought. But down in Tamil Nadu, the
decade was marked by a ceaseless downpour, thanks to Ilayaraja, a benevolent
monarch who doled out musical riches to his subjects with unstinting largesse.
And yet, there was a question that hovered in the air — unasked, unanswered. M
S Viswanathan, the magician before Ilayaraja, sprinkled fairy dust on the
melody line, causing it to burst into miraculous shapes and forms. Ilayaraja,
subsequently, breathed life into the interstices. With his staggering gift for
arrangement, he ensured that no part of a song was left untended, even the
parts behind the vocals, and especially the parts between the stanzas. So the
question we were asking — even if we weren't aware, then, that we were asking
it — is what else could be done with the film song.
With his breakthrough in Roja, Rahman answered that question. And he did so by
reshaping the dynamics of the acoustics, something that could never have been
done in the era of live recording. No one had heard anything like it — not in
Tamil Nadu, and not in India, as Roja went on to enslave a nation. It was a
young sound, a modern sound, and — though we didn't know it then — a global
sound, even if, for a while, it appeared that Rahman's music could only be
cotton candy, spun sugar that's sweet on the ears but with barely any
nutrition. There was, for instance, `Kangalil Enna Eeramo' (Uzhavan, 1993),
where the soaring melody lines were tethered to a bouncy, pizzicato percussion,
or `Usilampatti Penkutti' (Gentleman, 1993), where Rahman proved it was
possible to rustle up a rustic ambience without invoking Ilayaraja. These were
beautiful numbers, but they did not especially point towards a composer capable
of true greatness. There was something almost antiseptic about these songs —
they were too polished, too perfect. We loved these songs because they were a
welcome change, but little did we suspect that Rahman was just warming up.
In 1995, with rangeela, rahman accomplished something no composer from the
South had — he successfully crossed over to Hindi cinema with a set of original
composition

2009-04-01 Thread Aakarsh
Innisai is Hindolam, same as 'Manmohni' from Yuvvraaj.

Kannodu (jeans) is not Suddha Dhanyasi but it is Abheri.

Snehithane is in Keeravani raaga.

I dont know what is this Kaatril you are referring to. If it is from Ajit's
film Godfather (same film as Innisai), then yes, it has shades of Keeravani.

and btw, Hai Rama from Rangeela is Panthuvaraali.

sit for having food, a bunch of hair used to fall at the plate. When he is
about to have coffee, a lizard can be found in the cup. My mother used to
see all this in person and used to weep and cry very badly. We have suffered
a lot.

We took our father to a lot many places and tried different types of
medication, but nothing would solve the mystery. My father used to suffer
very badly with his stomach ache. Finally, someone told us that somebody had
kept something bad somewhere.

We found out where that someone had kept that bad item. In front of our
house, we dig it up to 4 feet depth and found male and female dolls made of
wax. In the same way, we digged out some dolls from my father's car. We
found out that someone had kept all this and had cast a bad spell on his
