btw, I hear some sounds of "My heart will go on" in CR's Jason Cynitia Suite.
The overall progression of Jason up to 3:10 or so, also goes in the similar
pattern as in the Titanic song at the beginning before Celine's voice started
in that - - soft starting, more heavy instruments joining in, all reaching a
crescendo.

And after 3:10, for a few moments I hear something like that Sonu Nigam song
from Salllu bro Akshay Kumar strarrer last year's movie, forgot the name, Hamko
Maloom Hai, Dil Pareshan hai, or something like that.

Are there some common instruments or common phoren Raga or commercially
available loops in the three songs?

--

Jason seems like two separate songs or musical pieces combined into one single
song/ piece. The switch/ transformation/ metamorphosis takes place at 3:10 and
is very conspicuous. It would be interesting to see what happens on the screen
that necessitated music to switch so drastically.

Thanks.

I dont want to sound all negative but expecting an oscar is just too much.
When was the last time a comedy movie got an oscar? You might argue that its
ARR this time, but i have seen some equally good music in many movies. Take
some recent animation movies for instance. Kung Fu Panda, Madagacsar, Ice
Age all had some great music in my opinion. They werent even nominated. So
just hold on to your ipods for now :)

[arr] HT on Couples Retreat - Text

2009-09-27 Thread pratap

AR Rahman
has announced the release of his first Hollywood original motion picture
soundtrack,
post Slumdog Millionaire on his Facebook page. The Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman,
Malin Akerman starrer, Couples Retreat, centered around four couples who go to
a island resort to work on their marriage, has 15 tracks by A R Rahman, most of
which are instrumental.

Cashing in
on the Rahman buzz, producer Vince Vaughn has put up the entire soundtrack of
the movie on a website created especially for live streaming of the
tracks,  www.couplesretreatsoundtrack.com

though the
movie has an official website of its own. The album hasn't been released on a
physical medium yet, and is only available online.

The album is
largely instrumental in nature, as the songs are likely to be used in the
background of the movie, as opposed to in song-and-dance routines that Rahman's
music has mostly been used for in India. And clearly, the maestro has showcased
his prowess over different genres of music, as the album would have a bearing
of his Hollywood career.

So you get
to hear plenty of Western classical and a few Indian classical sounds, that are
poles apart from the music of Slumdog Millionaire, which had a more pacy,
modern, up tempo feel to it. Most of the instrumentals in the  album have an
operatic orchestration, ranging
from dark, frenetic violin-piano based themes that give it sense of an impending
twist-in-the- tale (Meeting Marcel, Shark, Itinery) to fresh-as-morning, soft
and  lighter operas (Jason and Cynthia
piano suite, Waterfall, Animal Spirits)..

'Though none
of the tracks are overtly Indian in nature, Rahman does leave a stamp of his
roots fusing classical Indian instruments with western sounds. Check out
'Undress which is a stunning miridangam-veena-bass guitar fusion. In fact, the
best tracks of the albums, including 'Undress', are ones that have the Indians
touch to them).

'Salvadore,
that fuses Kailash Kher's gorgeous alaaps with a part-Spanish, part-Arabic
tune, is a treat to the ears,  as is ‘Sajna’
one of only three songs with words, that has Rahman's soulful interlude of
'Sajna', with romantics English lyrics apparently sung by Vaughn himself (as
Google
would have us believe). Also check out the superior 'Tour of the villa'
instrumental version of the same too.

More glory to Rahman

The
best track on the album is undoubtedly 'Kurukuru
kan', a soft, part-classical, fully-awesome
Tamil track, again sung by Rahman,  that's as bright
and sunny as sunshine,  and even
has the sounds of birds chirping in its background. The other tracks on the
album have the Hawaiin/Carribean flavour to them, since  the movie is set on
one such island. 'Nana' is a fun, groovy number with a caribean-style rap, and
so is 'Lau',
with its Congo drums and
country music.

With its vast soundscape and shades of Indian-Western fusion Couples Retreat
can only result in extended Hollywood glory for the 'Mozart of Madras', who has
taken the word
by storm.

Will the Hollywood movie have song sequence in future? It seems for me guys !!!
Did you hear all songs of Couples Retreat? The importance of the songs in Movie
is mounting after slumdog millionaire. Couples Retreat is a splendid proof. 15
tracks with a lot of vocals!!! This never happened much in Hollywood before.
Its just giving me the feeling that the Hollywood movies would have the song
sequence in the future. May be it is impossible. But can our Maestro do that ?
Come on guys share what you feel...

Re: [arr] Radioandmusic reviews CR - 4.5/5

You might not care but Hollywood does care. ARR is in demand in Indian
because most Indians like his music. Downfall of all musicians start when
majority of people are unable to relate to and enjoy their music.
So it is extremely important for CR to be widely accepted by everyone in the
west. (at least those who do bother to listen to the soundtrack of a Vince
Vaughn movie)

[arr] Roja was my benchmark, says A R Rahman

*Roja was my benchmark, says A R RahmanRajeev Masand / CNN-IBNPublished on
Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 14:46, Updated on Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 15:21 in
Entertainment section
A meeting between two musical geniuses was in the making but fate
cancelled it. Composer A R Rahman, two days before he won two Oscars for
Slumdog Millionaire, had received an e-mail invitation from late pop singer
Michael Jackson to discuss projects. Rahman talks about Jackson,
spirituality and the film that set off his career with CNN-IBN’s Rajeev
Masand on To Catch A Star.
Rajeev Masand: May I start by asking you, at an average, how much time do
you get to sleep these days? I know that you are committed to doing a lot of
work both in India and in America, do you have enough time to really rest?
A R Rahman: I need to sleep, otherwise I fall ill the next day, at least six
to seven hours, but sometimes it's in installments.
Rajeev Masand:When you keep the Oscars at home, does everyone want to look
at it, touch it?
A R Rahman: I have not seen it for ages. I don't know where it is. It's
somewhere in the building I guess.
Rajeev Masand: You have always said that healthy arguments with your
directors and lyricists often result in the creation of some very good
music. I am guessing after the Oscars no one really wants to argue with you
anymore, no one really disputes your suggestions anymore.
A R Rahman: I don't know if it works that way. Because in the interest of
any big films, there's always an argument and a vision which is most the
director's and if you are sensible you have to go through with that vision.
You can't say, "I have written a beautiful song, fitted in the movie, I
don't care."
Rajeev Masand: There is a popular perception even amongst your greatest fans
that Jai Ho and the music of Slumdog Millionaire isn't necessarily your best
music.
A R Rahman: They are not giving me the Oscar for my life, they are giving it
for the film and that particular moment the film came in and how different
the music and the whole theme was for the film. I am really proud about
Slumdog Millionaire’s music and Jai Ho
Rajeev Masand: You have always said that you wouldn't like your commitments
here in India to be affected by the work that you want to do outside. And
yet the first casualty of success turned out to be Rajiv Menon's film Dhun,
he is an old friend of yours, but you are unable to do his film?
A R Rahman: It's a bullet which I have to take and had to give him also. His
film is very musically demanding and it requires 24 x 7 attention. I can't
give a tune through Internet for that film and I didn't want to stop his
film in anyway by delaying. I think he is a great filmmaker. He is like a
mini Raj Kumar for me. I am sure he is going to come up with really great
film and music.
Rajeev Masand: Did you break his heart?
A R Rahman: I don't know. But I needed to take a stand somewhere, I needed
to make a choice of not annoying people. But of course there is always a
next time and better things are going to happen.
Rajeev Masand: I am sure that you had chance to look at your biography that
was published recently?
A R Rahman: I didn't see much of it because but I have heard of different
comments passed by people, good and bad about it.
Rajeev Masand: I think your fans are quite eager to know your reaction to
the book especially it was fairly critical of you as well. It did speak
about you having abandoned your family after you converted to Islam, it
spoke about you having abandoned old band mates?
A R Rahman: I wouldn't say that is true because once I seriously started
getting into music, I became spiritual, I wouldn't visit my own sister
(laughs) and sometimes music needs that. You can't be everything. And a
particular time in life comes in when you can compensate.
Like Gandhi, (I am not comparing myself with Gandhi), but for Gandhi the
nation was important, for me the music is important.
Rajeev Masand: The book says you abandoned your band mates, the moment Mani
Ratnam signed you for Roja There is a critical view of you. It even talks
about references to black magic and voodoo. Did you fee betrayed by this
book?
A R Rahman: No, I don't want to hide any of my past. There was an incidence
in my family about my father. Lot of people believed that he was killed in
black magic. So when you are a child you tend to believe everything. And
then my overwhelming spiritual thirst made me vanish all the stuff and now I
am clean. I am following the Sufi path and I don't care about anything.
About the band, it was supposed to be a temporary band.
There was never a thing like I would have to leave my life to come and play
in the band. It was a fun thing. We did one number for an album and I became
busy in Roja and my band mates were impatient because they wanted to finish
the album. So I said if you are impatient please go ahead because I had
taken up something, which doesn't come to every individual. I had the best
film director asking me for music. I wanted to g

Whew, what an extraordinary album CR is. If ARR can produce masterpieces
like this in Hollywood, I wouldn't mind if he makes a tradeoff between
Kollywood and Hollywood in favor of the latter. I mean reduce his
assignments in Kolly, not abandon it altogether. And it shows how
shortsighted we fans can be if we limit his genius to just the formulaic
movies in India. As he himself has said that he likes to explore new avenues
we should allow him to do just that otherwise risk his creativity getting
stunted and a kind of boredom setting in. Looks like his creative genius
needs to be challenged all the time. If it is, it is good for us fans as
well.

Also can the sound experts here throw light on the huge difference in sound
quality between CR and Blue. After hearing CR, Blue now sounds to be totally
muddled up and loud. Is it to do with a predominantly acoustic sounds cape
of CR or just plainly our sound engineers have more to learn compared to
their Western counterparts?

Bravo! Great job, Suresh! Now, that's what I call a great review, doing full
justice to this exquisite soundtrack. I esp. like that you talked about the
sounds, instruments, arrangements a lot, which really do deserve specific
menttion in each track. I liked how you tried to connect the music to the
visuals, giving more meaning to each track in context. Appreciated how you
tried to put the "comedy" element in logical light, stating that the serious
music is for those who are the butt of the jokes and who don't find it
funny, but the rest do! Makes perfect sense! I love some of your
descriptions, like, "bed of soft strings".very classy! Lastly, you very
nicely put this in perspective in comparison to Slumdog in that even though
it won't gather the same attention and perhaps level of accolades as
Slumdog, it still deserves to be celebrated as a beautifully strong entrance
for Rahman into hollywood. I can see your knowledge and ear for good music
is quite refined and I really appreciate that. The only thing I didn't agree
with you was the criticism on Sajna Re, but I respect that opinion a lot
because you explained in detail why you felt that way. Geez, I wish more
people would write reviews like you do And yes, you very correctly
stated that it used the same musical template as Dreams on Fire, which is
what I thought too when I heard it.

For me, the core strength of this soundtrack is in artistic, aural, and
aesthetic beauty, not commercial potential. It's one of the most beautifully
crafted compositionally and sonically mostly acoustic album by Rahman and to
me, that's all I need to celebrate, regardless of movie success. That is the
greatest distinction between this and Slumdog, which was more of a
commercial, highly energized, stylish, electronic soundtrack. Both Slumdog
and Couple's Retreat showcase ARR's versatility amazingly and I hope people
here in the West recognize that.

btw, I hear some sounds of "My heart will go on" in CR's Jason Cynitia Suite.

Thanks.

CR - Jason, My heart will go on and a Sonu song (was Re: [arr] The vision becomes the truth....thanks to Rahman!)

2009-09-27 Thread ichord
I don't hear anything common in terms of melody comparing to My Heart will Go
On, but I understand your point in terms of crescendo. Actually, the use of
such types of crescendo is a common musical concept in hollywood scores to
amplify drama and emotions.

[arr] Re: Couples Retreat Soundtrack Review

2009-09-27 Thread ichord
Hey Anand,

Diff between Blue and CR

1) Blue has multiple layers, very dense, while CR is lighter in terms of
quantity of arrangements, thus more breathing room and space in the tracks.

2) Blue's sound engineering team are composed of multiple people, using
different platforms around the world (multisourced), hence some inconsistencies
in terms of volumes, etc. (found that out through a good friend). Also, check
out the sound credits in the Blue inlayso many people! CR's sound team
appears to be more intimate and I think ARR may have supervised the sound
better in CR.

3) The nature of Blue's music is loud and heavy, given it's an action and
massala bollywood flick. CR's theme is more light and since it's mostly
instrumental, allowed AR to show more pure artistic creativity in terms of
sound and arrangements.

BTW, I love Blue and CR both for different reasons.

Your concern is understandable, I am not answering your question.
But on a different note, how many affordable ARR fans
are actually going to the store and buying the Original Music CDs?
People are not paying even if something is affordable and
they complain if something else is not affordable.
I am not questioning you personally but people's psychology
in general.
Wish you enjoy the show somehow!

[arr] Does anyone else think this is just magical?

2009-09-27 Thread ichord
There are so many magic moments in CR for meI'm just spellbound. But, one
thing that I always love about ARR is how he gradually introduces a new
instrument or arrangement as a song progresses...it just sort of sneaks up
quietly and you hear bits and pieces before it totally comes into full bloom

Example, in the song Sajna, notice how the strings gradually weave their way in
with the rhythm after the first choral interlude, getting louder and more
prominent before we hear them in full bloom at the end of the song, totally
harmonizing beautifully with the chorus.MY GOD, THAT IS GENIUS!

That's what I love most about ARRit's the details in his musicthe
subtle artistry.the small thingsthat just create so much magic and tug
at your soul.!

I just feel blessed that I have sensitive enough ears and am open minded enough
to appreciate the small but powerful musical elements in ARR's compositions.

In fact I too was under the impression that I'd heard the Jaage Hai
interludes somewhere on the CR oST,but after listening to a number of

movies in Roja and Taal.. And Marudhani/??!! [:O] [:O]

I think this is the lyric

When You smile, I smile with you
When you cry, I feel it too
In my soul, my heart coming out to you
Being my eyes, when I can't see
Being my voice, when I can't speak
Being my light, when darkness creeps on me
Ho oo.. sajna sajna sajna re
I just say sajna sajna sajna re
Ho oo.. sajna sajna sajna re

Hai just sajna sajna sajna re

(You're) the star that shines all bright
'cross the sky across the night

making ways to be right by your side
hold me close, don't let me go
hold me tight, don't you say no
save the love, we have for ever more
Ho oo.. sajna sajna sajna re

Hai just sajna sajna sajna re

Save me, when my dream catches fire
(Spare) me, in my only desire

Wake me, when the pain is over
Take me, now (Take me, now)               ...2

When You smile, I smile with you
When you cry, I feel it too
In my soul, my heart coming down to you
Being my eyes, when I can't see
Being my voice, when I can't speak
Being my light, when darkness creeps on me

You're the star that shines all bright
'cross the sky across the night

making ways to be right by your side
hold me close, don't let me go
hold me tight, don't you say no
save the love, we have for ever more

[arr] CR my take on it

2009-09-27 Thread ab prakash
Rahman Oh my little genius you are a gift to mankinds senses.

Its a rare gem carved by a meticuluos artist with great mind and gentleness.
Its so soothing. I am sure your mind wil reach a state from where there is no
return. Will let your imagination go wild. Will take you to most beautiful
places on earth. Your mind will travel with his music. Will ache for more.
Suffocate in joy. Crawl in wild anticipation . We have wasted a talent for so
many years. What you have heard these years is just crap(Rahman sorry for being
harsh) (God forgive me)my favorite (till his next album comes out). Music at
its v best. Music is pure, innocent, charming and  beautiful. If this music is
a women , i am sure men will die to even take a look at it. He has given us a
ecstacy pill to live forever. This music has no boundaries, no definitions. It
will lit a fire in your heart.

Retreat a treat for music connoiseur

Re: [arr] Sajna - Lyrics

2009-09-27 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
Hi all,

Thank you to Vijay for enlightening us on the singers, PJ Morton and Clinton
Cerejo and Dominique Cerejo and the other artists.
Regarding PJ Morton, I'd like to give you guys this website
http://www.greyologyinc.com/

I found the name of Greyology on the Blue credits and googled it. The
sisters singing in Yaar Mila Tha are affiliated to Greyology as well.
Do visit the section "Projects", some info on PJ Morton and on Greyology 's
upcoming work with A.R.

Re: [arr] Sajna - Lyrics

One more thing...

I was right that the singer was an Afro American, but just didn't get the right
person. Also, I'm so impressed at how PJ pronounces "Re" when he sings "Sajna
Re". He pronounces the "R" sound like an Indian wouldreally nice touch and
very respectful IMO to the Indian pronounciation, of course, AR or someone must
have instructed him to do so, but still..

AB,

I know exactly how you feel, brother. I like your poetic take. Listening to
this soundtrack is like a rich journey through the most fascinating and
beautiful corners of the world...you can just let your imagination fly. To me,
life would be so much darker without ARR's music.

2009-09-27 Thread Niven
I would like to clarify, after reading many posts.. I see people still telling,
mridangam used in Undress... Its not mridangam, the instrument used is the
Ghatam... its a pot made of clay and superbly played by the great Vikku
Vinayakram and his son Selvaganesh...

I wonder who played for Rahman

hehe revolutionising? Generally each Hollywood movie will have atleast one
song as a part of the OST which is used for promotions and most likely ends
up playing while in the credit list. Vocals and stuff are always part of

Your concern is understandable, I am not answering your
question.

But on a different note, how many affordable ARR fans

are actually going to the store and buying the Original Music CDs?

People are not paying even if something is affordable and

they complain if something else is not affordable.

I am not questioning you personally but people's psychology

in general.

Wish you enjoy the show somehow!

[arr] An amazing composer - Dave Stewart

2009-09-27 Thread pratap

10 Stunning new Dave Stewart photographs

Dave
Stewart is sharing a number of current moments of his life with us
today in some great, huge and so far unseen shots (photo 2 by Kristin
Burns, photo 6 by Dave Stewart). The first two are amazing pictures of
him with a guitar on Hollywood Boulevard and with Damian Marley:

After he is living in Los Angeles, it must be nothing unusual to see
an angel walking by on his way to work (”so many angels everywhere”):

Then there are two pictures showing him and A. R. Rahman, “an
amazing composer” as Dave says, who is currently working with him in
L.A.:

After all that work, also a Dave Stewart needs some time to relax,
may it be with Cindy Gomez in Vienna, with Desmond Child in a car,
alone with guitars in Las Vegas or on a small jet plane – when only Ned
(Douglas) and his computer are still working on the mix of a new track.

Hello Rahman fans,

I feel proud and honored to be a member of the most up-to-date AR Rahman info
portal on the internet. Once Rahmanonline.com shutdown I probably never found
clear and latest info on the melody master like this place.

AR Rahmans Japanese website info was the ulitmate that I could think of when I
think of the people who write on this board. I am so blessed to be among such
fans of AR Rahman.

I was so jealous of the ARR fans group that went together to see the Jai Ho
show at Pune. I don't know if any "pack" of Rahmaniacs plan to go together this
time to the Chennai show on 11th October.

If the "stalwart" fans like Vithur know of something like it, please let me
know. I would love to watch the show pretty close by(Seen 2-3 shows from much
futher away on earlier shows :( ) but if given a chances to watch it with
the Rahmaniacs Wow WOw. I would love that. Please reply. We can probably do
a Car pool or something!

Cheers,
Hari.
