Well...this might be a bit off-topic ...but in this album Deepak P.A Played
the guitars, who is actually his sound engineer
No Keith peters and sanjeev thomas this time ..which is quite unbelievable
!!! !! and No Sivamani Also !! so many Brand new singers and musicians

U can easily feel Raavan ( may be abhishek's character ,m confused about all
these 3 language versions ) is a dark character from the promos and poster
!! but i felt very weird when i heard Electric guitar in this album ... I
wasnt expecting this kinda modern instruments in this album ... !!

The Mozart of Madras is also a Mozart of Technology.

It’s 2010. When you think of musicians, producers and artists you have to think
tech. Leave it to Indian super-producer A. R. Rahman to lead with the latest in
cutting edge tech, the iPad.

MTV Iggy had the chance to sit down one-on-one with Rahman before he announced
his upcoming world tour, “A. R. Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World
Tour.” We found that not only does he own an iPad, he now owns eight!

When Rahman’s flight arrived from India to New York at 4am on Monday, he and
his staff went straight to the 24/7 Apple store on 5th avenue to buy the tablet.

“They wouldn’t give more than two for each person,” but “there were so many
emails from friends and directors [from India] wanting them.” So the Mozart of
Technologyhad his entourage help him out. Shhh, don’t tell Steve Jobs!

By the time MTV Iggy was talking with him at 11am, A. R. was proudly showing
off the apps he had already downloaded.

A. R. showed us a couple of programs that he was into. Upon swiping his tablet
open, the first one was already called up. “I love this program, Bebot – Robot
Synth.”

He demonstrated the program with an original song, on-the-fly. Every
finger-touch presented an auditory note, gestures up the pad controlled volume
and intensity. The horizontal movement changed the tone. He seemed to have
mastered the instrument that is Bebot, calling it a “polyphonic theremin.” He
modestly told us, “I’m getting used to it still.”

Rahman also showed us a mixing app that he uses to control his studio program,
Pro Tools. “I sit [back] and lounge,” he jokes noting that his studio has “ a
lot of Apple stuff.”

2010-04-26 Thread Bergin Roy
To all Bashers:

If A.R's music is of a certain pattern / style, and you are not comfortable
wth it? You are ignorant of what is actually the reason behind the music.
AR is not some yet another composer that composes music for the heck of
it. He is someone who know what he's doing and why.
And for a Maniratnam movie, he'd never let it loose as you think. If you
are not still convinced, wait for the movie to know why he did it.

AR knows what to deliver, where and when, so dont sweat in advising the
legend.
Just try to understand the music, after all you need to learn AR music
language before you comment on it. Coz, every time you get a new music
language.
So, it has to grow on you with repeated hearing and then you'll understand.

If you don't understand a language, don't tell the language is bad, its you
that doesnt understand it. Try to learn the language.

At the recent music release of Raavan, everybody was taken in by a soulful
rendition of a song, Jaa re udd jaa re, by AR Rahman.

Penned by fellow Oscar winner Gulzar, most of the audience present for the
music release of Raavan assumed it was part of the CD given out that evening -
but it wasn’t. Even Mani Ratnam wasn’t aware that Rahman would be singing the
song.

A source from the unit reveals, “The song that Rahman performed live was an
absolutely last minute inclusion. Rahman and Mani share a special bond that
goes beyond their professional association. Rahman has given music for all of
Mani’s films and even sung in a couple like Dil Se and Guru. Mani was very keen
to have Rahman sing in Raavan.” Which he did, eventually.

But the song itself hadn’t been set to music. So Rahman burnt the midnight oil
to give Mani a musical surprise. The night before the launch, Rahman closeted
himself in his Mumbai studio and worked through the night to compose the song.
In the wee hours, he recorded it in his voice.

The source adds that the final CD of the track did not contain the song, and
the entire team of Raavan, including director Mani Ratnam, heard it for the
first time at the launch. The song may be included at a later stage.

Rahman’s midnight melody

The composer worked overnight to record a special song; he performed it live,

By Mauli Singh

Guys I think its time to relax...Over 95% of ARR's albums are disappointing at
first hearing! Remember Taal, Yuvraaj, Blue etc. Atleast I was disappointed at
initial hearings! You have to give it time...Our Master thinks long term he
knows beforehand what his audience is going to like that his music shall grow
eventually...he focuses on giving something different every time please
remember he also stays true to the script of the movie! This is not a pop album
but a film soundtrack! So the music is bound to be related to the movie! What I
have seen of the Movie stills till now, the score seems to be bang on! Thok De
Killi!!!

I guess many ppl liked Ranjha Ranjha most is bcoz thats the most catchy song on
first hearing Javed Ali's smooth vocals are easy to absorb. However, for me
its Thok De Killi I loved the most at first hearing! The beats, the surprise
instrumental interlude in the midst of the song the pace at which it goes in
the end is awesome! After Jai Ho! its gonna be Thok De Killi! that ll take the
nation by rage!

You are probably too new to understand ARR's music or too young to have put

AJ, I am also seeing lot of positive reactions on the net, but there
are also negative remarks...the fact i am unable to digest is that there
is no instantly hummable tune in this album. Kata Kata had huge
expectations from me, but this song sounds to me like a fun song with lot
of variations in beat and singing. the structure and variation being
  changed in AR's
songs is seen nowadays a lot. It irritates the listener and makes him think
that where the song is going. Beera is good but short. lot of beera beera
repetitions, they could have made the song longer with 2 stanzas. I have bn
following ARR form 92 so i am used to this initial not liking, and then
getting impressed. But still, I feel this album is a disappointment. It
makes me wonder whether is this the combination which gave Vellai
pookal, pachai nirame, Dilse, Bombay, thiruda thiruda to the
  world.

When I first heard the album this was my least-liked song but now I like it so
much that it keeps on playing on the back of mind. After hearing the whole
album through out the day, the one song which plays in my mind  when i sleep is
Ranjha Ranjha. Its magical.                            The music beat which
starts at 0:50 and runs till the end of the song is so interesting and
keeps you moving through the track. Rekha's and Anuradha's voice is very
exciting. The two interludes : one with the instrument that the song begins and
the other I think Santoor have a kind of killer effect. The whole is very
subtle and is simplicity personified.
The Album in the whole itself is very rarest and we are lucky to have it a hear.

hidden beauties, esp themes for Neelambari (Ramya Krishnan).

A very important note, because the source of the DVD comes from PYRAMID

a very low volume of voices talking. So please bare with me on that matter, and

Hi,

First of all we should think about the movie theme and then only we can expect
the songs for the film. Even though its not od Epic or Historic film, its base
line is something related to the epic Ramayan and that too the title itself
says its about the demon king Ravans side of story.

A.R.Rahman gives the music Only for the film, and the film is not being made
for his music. In that view you cant expect the music of ravan and sita playing
around trees kind of songs.I really enjoys the songs with Ravans mind and the
more earthy songs with tribal touch.

If you want peppy songs or hip hop songs try to listen the films with that
genre.

This is my personnal openion about this film and its songs.

Heard the songs about 4 times with the Original CD of Raavan today. Pretty
much disappointed with the songs (Except Beera and Khillie re), all other
songs have heavy beats, lot of variations in singing, no simple nature etc.
There is not 1 song which is instantly catchable/likable.  May be I will like
it with more hearings. Very Average score by ARR for a Mani movie. Expected a
lot out of this. This may be the weakest of all ARR-Mani (weaker than
 Guru) combos.

Alaipayudhey - September madham. I simply skip all songs like snehigidhane,
kadhal sadugudu and go to this song because I loved this too much. But
everyone says this is the weakest song in the album
Laagan - Radha kaise na jale. I dont even listen to mitwa, gana na and I
skip to this song straight away.
Yuva/Aydha Eluthu - Nenjam ellam
VTV - Anbil avan sertha
Rhythm - Ayyo pathikuchu

Now again in Raavan I cant even listen to anything else other than Ranjha
Ranjha with Rekha Bharadwaj's voice and I see so many mails claiming that to
be the weakest song !!!

Anyone ?

You can blindly count on some combinations to never fail.

The tuning between filmmaker Mani Ratnam and master composer A R Rahman [
Images ] is one of them. The curiously titled Raavan is their tenth
collaboration since Roja [ Images ] and the vivacity of this merger has neither
lost its ardor nor its willingness to explore.

Said to draw contemporary parallels from the great Indian mythological epic,
Ramayana [ Images ], Ratnam's eagerly-awaited offering features Abhishek
Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan [ Images ] and Vikram as its lead players. And
if the soundtrack, soaked in Gulzar's [ Images ] penetrating imagination, is
anything to go by, Raavan is going to be a mostly intriguing experience.

Never to give into the comfort zone trap, Rahman delivers a sound mix of zingy
rusticity and zealous verve. Inspired by the calypso-flavoured wilds of Africa
against the trumpeting dramatics of desi folk tunes, the thumping beats of
Beera reiterate just that. Winsome from the word go, Beera's effectiveness is
further escalated through the booming fervour of Vijay Prakash and Mustafa
Kutoane with some piquant dressing of Keerthi Sagathia's piercing huskiness.

The frothiness of this ensemble makes an instant connect with the listener. It
takes a while to get off the loop before you want to get on with the rest of
the album. Says a lot about Beera, right?

From upbeat to intense, Raavan's mood changes gears with Karthik's blazing
rendition of Behne de. And while Rahman builds a suitably thunderous aura to
match the fierce passions of Gulzar's words, this is essentially a
performance-oriented creation. At times reminiscent of Sonu Nigam's [ Images ]
feverish chant in Dil Se's Satrangi re, though much restrained, Karthik
delivers a sonorous punch.

Upbeat returns with a bang, quite literally with Sukhwinder Singh [ Images ]
and Am'nico's strapping execution of the rhythmic rhyme play, Thok de killi.
Gulzar's rare brand of wizardry concocts some heady visuals with nuggets like
Raat ka maal, raaton ne loota. Chaand taaron ke guche udaye. Din nikalna tha.
Apna bhi nikla. Kismein dum hai ke suraj bujhaye?' There's enough drama, drum
and drive in the stalwart Killi to please all and sundry. Needless to say, it
does.

Following the chartbuster Killi, Rahman aims to impress with Rekha [ Images ]
Bharadwaj and Javed Ali's ravishing, romantic overtures in Ranjha Ranjha. Yet
again, Gulzar scoops out some gems from his treasure of insight and invention
to assemble a precious poem of glorious attachment and immortal love. A
free-wheeling melody embellished with exotic arrangement, Ranjha flaunts its
breezy presence and marriage of vibrant vocals with such poise, which is both
alluring and inspiring. Remember her delicate whispers in Meenaxi [ Images ]'s
Yeh rishta kya kehlata hai Khili re?

Reena Bhardwaj returns to her dainty roots with the leisurely, amorous and soft
strains of Khili re. Khili's texture brings back memories of Rahman's
glass-like lullaby Jaa ri jaa (Duniya Dilwalon Ki). Despite it's fragile
disposition, this tender piece makes sure its blithe presence doesn't go
unnoticed in an album filled with extrovert songs.

Post Beera, the sound of bigul makes another sprightly appearance, this time to
rejoice in the celebratory and playful notes of Kata kata. Personifying the
bridegroom to a scapegoat, Kata features the collective huskiness of ethnic
specialists Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi along with Kunal Ganjawala. Its teasing and
raunchy undertones and walloping beats are akin to Roja's Rukmini in spirit but
devise a tangy, earthy aroma unique to it alone. That's the beauty of Raavan.

Rahman stays true to the element of Ratnam's vision as there's never any
attempt to show off or introduce unnecessary elements. The outcome is
exquisite. Or should I say expected.

Feel free to send in your feedback as well.

am sure. For giving a hip hop song or soulful melody is not a big thing for our

Re: [arr] Rahman’s midnight melody

Interesting sidelights. feels nice to know such inside details.

It says Rahman closeted himself in his Mumbai studio

I wasn't aware that he has a studio at Mumbai or do they mean he hired
some studio to compose this song?

 Rahman’s midnight melody

The composer worked overnight to record a special song; he performed it
live, much to Mani Ratnam’s delight

At the recent music release of Raavan, everybody was taken in by a
soulful rendition of a song, Jaa re udd jaa re, by AR Rahman.

Penned by fellow Oscar winner Gulzar, most of the audience present for
the music release of Raavan assumed it was part of the CD given out that
evening - but it wasn’t. Even Mani Ratnam wasn’t aware that Rahman would
 be singing the song.

Gulzar with Rahman at the music release of Raavan (Pic: /Nilesh wairkar/)

A source from the unit reveals, “The song that Rahman performed live was
an absolutely last minute inclusion. Rahman and Mani share a special
bond that goes beyond their professional association. Rahman has given
music for all of Mani’s films and even sung in a couple like Dil Se and
Guru. Mani was very keen to have Rahman sing in Raavan.” Which he did,
 eventually.

But the song itself hadn’t been set to music. So Rahman burnt the
midnight oil to give Mani a musical surprise. The night before the
launch, Rahman closeted himself in his Mumbai studio and worked through
the night to compose the song. In the wee hours, he recorded it in his
 voice.

The source adds that the final CD of the track did not contain the song,
and the entire team of Raavan, including director Mani Ratnam, heard it
for the first time at the launch. The song may be included at a later
 stage.

[arr] singer selection in raavan

2010-04-26 Thread Thulasi Ram
i'm very slowly getting addicted to raavan.

regarding the voices, karthik, reena bharadwaj are excellent. for some
reason, i think behne de and ranjha ranjha would have been too good with
sonu nigam's voice and udit narayan's voice respectively. jaaved ali's
voice is too shallow in my opinion for this song. oh! that's my opinion!!

Re: [arr] Lots of raaga Bhairavi in Raavan?

2010-04-26 Thread Aakarsh
Swaps,

Thok De Killi and Behne De have the bhairavi flavour for sure. Infact, I felt
that the interludes of Thok De Killi, particularly the string portions are
reminiscent of Spirit of Rangeela. Not exactly same, but somewhat similar,
which got enhanced further by the style of execution.

But can you please confirm if Raanjha Raanjha is Bhairavi? I am not completely
sure? Somewhere i sense Raag Peelu as well.

And one of my expectations was that there could be a Veena based song in this
album. It was just my expectation, because legend says that Raavana invented
the instrument - Rudra Veena and that he was a great musician. I am surprised
that there isnt any Veena based song. I know it is too far fetched to expect,
but then Mani-ARR did display some lateral-thinking master strokes in the past.

Aakarsh

Love your BGM rips Dinesh, IMO you are the best ripper for extracting voiceless
bgm from DVDs (I can never forget you SOK rip). For the same reason, I had
approached you for Bombay's BGM (I hope thats next one in your pipeline :P).
Actually when I was asking for Bombay, deep inside my heart I also wanted to
ask for Dil Se/Uyire bgm too, but I was like naaa.. it will be too much for
Dinesh to ask for.. and somehow controlled myself from asking lol. Dunno how it
happened, but I got exactly what I was waiting for. Will listen and comment

 Raavan's music is exquisite

You can blindly count on some combinations to never fail.

The tuning between filmmaker Mani Ratnam and master composer A R Rahman [
Images ] is one of them. The curiously titled Raavan is their tenth
collaboration since Roja [ Images ] and the vivacity of this merger has
neither lost its ardor nor its willingness to explore.

Said to draw contemporary parallels from the great Indian mythological epic,
 Ramayana [ Images ], Ratnam's eagerly-awaited offering features Abhishek
Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan [ Images ] and Vikram as its lead players.
And if the soundtrack, soaked in Gulzar's [ Images ] penetrating imagination,
is anything to go by, Raavan is going to be a mostly intriguing experience.

Never to give into the comfort zone trap, Rahman delivers a sound mix of
zingy rusticity and zealous verve. Inspired by the calypso-flavoured wilds of
Africa against the trumpeting dramatics of desi folk tunes, the thumping
beats of Beera reiterate just that. Winsome from the word go, Beera's
effectiveness is further escalated through the booming fervour of Vijay
Prakash and Mustafa Kutoane with some piquant dressing of Keerthi Sagathia's
 piercing huskiness.

The frothiness of this ensemble makes an instant connect with the listener.
It takes a while to get off the loop before you want to get on with the rest
of the album.

At times reminiscent of Sonu Nigam's [ Images
] feverish chant in Dil Se's Satrangi re, though much restrained, Karthik
 delivers a sonorous punch.

Remember her delicate whispers in Meenaxi [ Images
]'s Yeh rishta kya kehlata hai Khili re?

Reena Bhardwaj returns to her dainty roots with the leisurely, amorous and
soft strains of Khili re.

Post Beera, the sound of bigul makes another sprightly appearance, this time
to rejoice in the celebratory and playful notes of Kata kata. Personifying
the bridegroom to a scapegoat, Kata features the collective huskiness of
ethnic specialists Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi along with Kunal Ganjawala. Its
teasing and raunchy undertones and walloping beats are akin to Roja's Rukmini
in spirit but devise a tangy, earthy aroma unique to it alone. That's the
 beauty of Raavan.

Rahman stays true to the element of Ratnam's vision as there's never any
attempt to show off or introduce unnecessary elements. The outcome is
exquisite. Or should I say expected.

Feel free to send in your feedback as well.

[arr] Ranjha Ranjha Lyrics [Initial Thoughts]

2010-04-26 Thread Rivjot
I must say I am not impressed with Gulzar saab's lyrics in this song. First 2
couplets (female + male) are not his words; as correctly, it has been credited
to Baba Bulleh Shah.

Ranjha Ranjha Kardi Ve Main Aape Ranjha Hoyi
Ranjha Ranjha Saddo Ni Mainu Heer Na Aakho Koyi

Ranjha Ranjha Na Kar Heere Jag Badnami Hoye
Patti Patti Jhar Jaave Par Khushboo Chup Na Hoye

Then the lines that follow -

Sotey Sotey Bolta Hoon, Kabhi Bolte Bolte Sota Hoon
Kya Jaane Kya Hota Hai, Kabhi Jalti Aag Dadolta Hoon
Ek Baar To Aake Dekhe Woh Bhi

they dont flow with the compisition at all!! seems like just tucked in there..
rest of the lyrics seem fine though.

There hasnt been any song by Rekha Bhardwaj that I didnt like, and this one
composed by ARR - has to be a special one. So far I have listened to this song
only 3-4 times.. and I am dead sure that I will fall madly in love with this
song in upcoming weeks. Just wanted to write how I felt at the start..

Re: [arr] Lots of raaga Bhairavi in Raavan?

2010-04-26 Thread A.R.Rajib
That's a superb trivia about that Veena !! Waiting for some killing BGM
based on veena !! Wow ...so excited :-D

Anyway ...anyone noticed Ranjha Ranjha got a beat...starts from 50 seconds
till the end. ...which is similar to many MJ Track ? ;-)

 Swaps,

Thok De Killi and Behne De have the bhairavi flavour for sure. Infact, I
felt that the interludes of Thok De Killi, particularly the string portions
are reminiscent of Spirit of Rangeela. Not exactly same, but somewhat
similar, which got enhanced further by the style of execution.

But can you please confirm if Raanjha Raanjha is Bhairavi? I am not
completely sure? Somewhere i sense Raag Peelu as well.

And one of my expectations was that there could be a Veena based song in
this album. It was just my expectation, because legend says that Raavana
invented the instrument - Rudra Veena and that he was a great musician. I am
surprised that there isnt any Veena based song. I know it is too far fetched
to expect, but then Mani-ARR did display some lateral-thinking master
 strokes in the past.

Re: [arr] Thamarai.com Reviews Raavan Music

Good Review.

AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam together gave us epic music for Roja, Bombay, Dil
Se (Uyire) and Saathiya (Alaipayuthey in Tamil), and when they teamed up
with lyricist Gulzar, they came out with Dil Se and more recently, Guru.
Needless to say, they were all amazing albums, and so I was left wondering
whether the music for their latest venture, Raavan (to be released
simultaneously as Raavanan in Tamil) would be able to rival these classic
soundtracks. How wrong I was to doubt AR Rahman, even for a second? The
Raavan OST is just as good as, if not better than the benchmarks the music
director had left for himself in previous years. The Raavan soundtrack is
catchy, upbeat and at times haunting, and each song leaves an impact on the
 listener, in my opinion.

Opening with an almost Lion King-esque African-style chant by newcomer
Mustafa Kutaone, Beera Beera is an upbeat number with powerful African
beats that are a joy to listen to. The lyrics Beera ka dus maathe, Beera ka
sau naam (Beera has ten heads, Beera has a hundred names) indicate that
this will be the lead character's introduction song, and I can't think of a
better way to introduce the untamed Beera (Raavan), than with this
 pride-filled, testosterone-fuelled number! Rahman's effortless fusion of
 African drums with a distinctly ethnic melody has culminated in this track;
an energetic piece that manages not to overwhelm the listener with too-heavy
beats or too-deep lyrics; they mainly chant Beera throughout! With its
folksy feel, this is a song that would typically be handed to somebody like
Shankar Mahadevan or Sukhwinder Singh. Instead, Vijay Prakash has been given
the lead vocals. He may not have the coarse voice that you'd think this song
would require, but he manages to render the song in a wonderfully spirited
 manner without being too forceful.

The next song is Behene De, and this song practically has AR Rahman
tattooed all over it. It reminds me a great deal (in a good way) of
Satrangi Re from Dil Se. They both have a similar structure to them: a
simple, repetitive melody that is supplemented by complementary (but far
from overpowering) backing instrumentals. Behene De, however, has a far more
rocky feel to it when compared to Satrangi Re. The uncomplicated melody does
not diminish this track in any way at all; it simply allows the lyrics to
take a lead role here, because they truly are touching lyrics. Behene De
loosely translates as Let me flow freely and thus indicates a sense of
imprisonment and a desperate need for freedom. Incidentally, Gulzar also
wrote the lyrics for Satrangi Re, and this same feeling of yearning is
brought to the fore with his lyrics for Behene De. Karthik's vocals are soul
stirring; you can almost feel the character's anguish through his voice.

Next comes Thok De Khili, with the rustic vocals of Sukhwinder Singh that
this sort of soundtrack would be incomplete without. This song is uplifting
in a sort of prepare-yourself-for-battle way; it resembles
Azeem-O-Shahenshah from Jodhaa Akbar in some aspects, with its heavy beat
and passionate assertions of the opening lines being repeated throughout.
The main difference between the two however, is that where
Azeem-O-Shahenshah is beat-heavy, Thok De Khili places its emphasis on the
music, making it a very orchestra-oriented piece. It is a vastly
instrument-heavy composition, but this only adds to the war-like feel of the
 song without overshadowing Gulzar's powerful lyrics. #8232;

I'm sure many will agree with me when I say that the beautiful song Ranjha
Ranjha is one that stands out the most in this album. Despite having
classical, almost Sufi-ish ties in its melody, the beat is distinctly
modern. Here Rahman has exhibited that it is possible to fuse old with new
without tainting the beauty of the melody. The song opens with Anuradha
Sriram's electronically enhanced (not a bad thing) humming, that features at
regular intervals throughout, and playing a key role in maintaing the flow
between each part of the song. The husky tones of Rekha Bhardwaj, and Javed
Ali's more polished yet unassuming singing totally contrast each other, but
still the vocals are stunning to say the least. The opening lines of the
song come from a Punjabi poem by Sufi poet Baba Bulleh Shah. The first line
translates as By repeating his name (Ranjha), I myself have become Ranjha,
and lyricist Gulzar has continued this poem with his own lyrics but has
still maintained a meaningful and romantic feeling. Pairing these lyrics
with Rahman's incredible instrumental arrangement for this track would
result in a beautiful piece of music in itself, but Rekha Bhardwaj's vocals
take it to a whole new level. Even the way she sings just two words Ranjha
Ranjha, overflows with the passion of a young lovestruck girl who can't

 Dear All,
Has it happened to anyone else that your most favourite song in any ARR album
is panned by critics as the weakest song of the album. It has happened to me
many times so I just wanted to know if I was not alone.

Alaipayudhey - September madham. I simply skip all songs like snehigidhane,
kadhal sadugudu and go to this song because I loved this too much. But
everyone says this is the weakest song in the album
Laagan - Radha kaise na jale. I dont even listen to mitwa, gana na and I skip
 to this song straight away.
 Yuva/Aydha Eluthu - Nenjam ellam
 VTV - Anbil avan sertha
 Rhythm - Ayyo pathikuchu

Now again in Raavan I cant even listen to anything else other than Ranjha
Ranjha with Rekha Bharadwaj's voice and I see so many mails claiming that to
 be the weakest song !!!

 Anyone ?

Re: [arr] Raavan - is it the best album so far ?

2010-04-26 Thread AJ
Whether it's the best album or not is not an objective measure, but a
subjective take. For some it might be, others not. For me, so far, Raavan is
amongst the very best of ARR's works from my standpoint (musical taste,
emotional impact, etc.) The whole album's got a beautiful blend of traditional
and contemporary with each song packing a punch. The soundtrack is way, way
too short, but very sweet and sweeping.

[arr] Re: Rahman’s midnight melody

2010-04-26 Thread Ganpy
Good to know such scoops..

If it is indeed true that even Maniratnam didn't know about it, hopefully this
will put all those dubious speculations to rest...All those conspiracy
theorists who like to weave stories around why there is always one song that
doesn't make it to the first release, etc. may have to look for newer stories
now.

And AR mentioned during the audio launch that most of the work was done in the
last one month..(and he added as usual with a chuckle)..So that leaves very
little room for imagination on how T-Series, AR and Mani could have
collaborated on this master plan to leave out this one song (which they already
knew would be the pick of the 7) from the first release...

Hmmm..Reading these contorted versions of what everyone thinks about this,
makes me add.. as usual, with a chuckle of course!!

At the recent music release of Raavan, everybody was taken in by a soulful
rendition of a song, Jaa re udd jaa re, by AR Rahman.

Penned by fellow Oscar winner Gulzar, most of the audience present for the
music release of Raavan assumed it was part of the CD given out that evening
 - but it wasn't. Even Mani Ratnam wasn't aware that Rahman would be singing
 the song.

Gulzar with Rahman at the music release of Raavan (Pic: *Nilesh wairkar*)

A source from the unit reveals, The song that Rahman performed live was an
absolutely last minute inclusion. Rahman and Mani share a special bond that
goes beyond their professional association. Rahman has given music for all
of Mani's films and even sung in a couple like Dil Se and Guru. Mani was
very keen to have Rahman sing in Raavan. Which he did, eventually.

But the song itself hadn't been set to music. So Rahman burnt the midnight
oil to give Mani a musical surprise. The night before the launch, Rahman
closeted himself in his Mumbai studio and worked through the night to
compose the song. In the wee hours, he recorded it in his voice.

The source adds that the final CD of the track did not contain the song, and
the entire team of Raavan, including director Mani Ratnam, heard it for the
first time at the launch. The song may be included at a later stage.

Lyrics of Ranjha Ranjha Song-

Ranjha ranjha kardi ve main aape ranjha hoyi
Ranjha ranjha saddo ni mainu heer na aakho koyi
(note: the above two lines are by Bulleh shah)
(I have been chanting the name of Ranjha so much that I myself have
become Ranjha)
(Call me Ranjha, there is nobody with the name Heer here)

Oo ranjha ranjha na kar heere jag badnami hoye
Patti patti jhar jaave par khushboo chup na hoye
(o Heer, don't chant the name of ranjha because it would lead to
infamy in the world)
(the petals of the flowers wither away, but the fragrance doesn't
become silent and is still there in withered petals)

Begunah pakda gaya (yaaro), ishq mein jakda gaya (yaaro)
Aankh ke dosh mein dil (yaaro), bewajah pakda gaya (yaaro)

burnt, one becomes a bracelet)

Sulagte koyle, arrey koyle ab bujhna mushkil hai

(let us move on together, o my madness, we keep on moving on, you
should not halt anywhere)
(if you heart likes a place, that is still not your destination)

  Dear All,
Has it happened to anyone else that your most favourite song in any ARR
album is panned by critics as the weakest song of the album. It has happened
to me many times so I just wanted to know if I was not alone.

Alaipayudhey - September madham. I simply skip all songs like
snehigidhane, kadhal sadugudu and go to this song because I loved this too
much. But everyone says this is the weakest song in the album

  Anyone ?

[arr] Beera lyrics and translation

2010-04-26 Thread V S Rawat
http://www.world4free.in/2010/03/beera-raavan-lyrics.html

Song Name: Beera
Film/Album: Raavan
Singer(s): Kirti Sagathia, Vijay Prakash
Music Director: A R Rahman
Lyricist: Gulzar

(note: In Hindi area, Veer is used as a synonym for brother, I wonder
if that is implied here as Beera (brother), unless it is a proper noun
name of someone in the film.)

Beera beera beera ..
Beera ke dus maathe, beera ke sau naam
(beera has ten foreheads (heads), beera has hundred names)
Chede jo beera ko dum a dum dum
(note: not getting this line, chadhe could be implying getting
intoxicated, meaning when beera gets intoxicated) (or dum is breath,
dum chadhe is saans phoolna, when beera becomes out of breath, exhausted)
Beera beera beera ..

Arrey beera uthti aandhi, beera ek toofan
Saans mein ugle agni beera jalti jaan, jalti jaan, jalti jaan, jalti
jaan beera
(beera is a growing windstorm, beera is a storm)
(beera exhales fire in his breath, that burns the soul) (or could mean
the soul of beera is burning, so he is exhaling fire)

Janam na pooche, jaat na pooche
Poocho jo pehchaan beera ka abhimaan hai, abhimaan hai, abhimaan hai,
abhimaan hai beera
Beera beera beera dhan dana dan
Beera beera beera ..
(don't ask what his birthplace is, don't ask his caste)
(but if you do ask for the identification, then, the identity of Beera
is his proud)

Beera ke dus maathe, beera ke sau naam
Chede jo beera ko dum a dum dum
Beera beera beera ..

 Rahmans midnight melody

The composer worked overnight to record a special song; he performed
it
live, much to Mani Ratnams delight

 *By Mauli Singh*

At the recent music release of Raavan, everybody was taken in by a
soulful
rendition of a song, Jaa re udd jaa re, by AR Rahman.

Penned by fellow Oscar winner Gulzar, most of the audience present for
the
music release of Raavan assumed it was part of the CD given out that
evening
 - but it wasnt. Even Mani Ratnam wasnt aware that Rahman
would be singing
 the song.

Gulzar with Rahman at the music release of Raavan (Pic: *Nilesh
wairkar*)

A source from the unit reveals, The song that Rahman performed
live was an
absolutely last minute inclusion. Rahman and Mani share a special bond
that
goes beyond their professional association. Rahman has given music for
all
of Manis films and even sung in a couple like Dil Se and Guru.
Mani was
very keen to have Rahman sing in Raavan. Which he did,
eventually.

But the song itself hadnt been set to music. So Rahman burnt the
midnight
oil to give Mani a musical surprise. The night before the launch,
Rahman
closeted himself in his Mumbai studio and worked through the night to
compose the song. In the wee hours, he recorded it in his voice.

The source adds that the final CD of the track did not contain the
song, and
the entire team of Raavan, including director Mani Ratnam, heard it
for the
first time at the launch. The song may be included at a later stage.

On 4/26/2010 7:35 PM India Time, _Rivjot_ wrote:

I must say I am not impressed with Gulzar saab's lyrics in this
song. First 2 couplets (female + male) are not his words; as
correctly, it has been credited to Baba Bulleh Shah.

Ranjha Ranjha Kardi Ve Main Aape Ranjha Hoyi
Ranjha Ranjha Saddo Ni Mainu Heer Na Aakho Koyi

Ranjha Ranjha Na Kar Heere Jag Badnami Hoye
Patti Patti Jhar Jaave Par Khushboo Chup Na Hoye

http://folkpunjab.com/abida-parveen/ranjha-ranjha-kardi/

the above link gives the bulleh shah version rendered by Abida
Perveen. I assume that is the original bulleh shah version and abida
didn't change anything in that. That reads:

Ranjha ranjha kardi hun main aape Ranjha hoyi
Saddo mainoon Dheedo Ranjha, Heer naa akho koyi
Ranjha main wich, main Ranjhe wich, ghair khayyal na koyi
Main naheen au aap hai, apni aap kare diljoyi
Jo kuch saade andar wasse, zaat assadi soyi
Jis de naal main neoonh lagaya oho jaisi hoyi
Chitti chaadar laa sut kuriye, pehan faqeeran loyi
Chitti chaadar daag lagesi, loyii daag na koyi
Taqt hazaare lai chal Bulleah, siyaaleen mile na dhoyi
Ranjha ranjha kardi hun main aape Ranjha hoyi

So, going by this, not 4 but just the first two lines are by Bulleh Shah.

Then the lines that follow -

Sotey Sotey Bolta Hoon, Kabhi Bolte Bolte Sota Hoon Kya Jaane Kya
Hota Hai, Kabhi Jalti Aag Dadolta Hoon Ek Baar To Aake Dekhe Woh
 Bhi

they dont flow with the compisition at all!! seems like just tucked
in there.. rest of the lyrics seem fine though.

ha ha ha.

in a way, you are saying that ARR didn't compose music well for these
lines. no?

ha ha ha.

There hasnt been any song by Rekha Bhardwaj that I didnt like, and
this one composed by ARR - has to be a special one. So far I have
listened to this song only 3-4 times.. and I am dead sure that I
will fall madly in love with this song in upcoming weeks. Just
wanted to write how I felt at the start..

[arr] Now I'm confident about doing more Tamil movies: Aishwarya Rai

2010-04-26 Thread Ganesh Subramanian
By indiaabroad
Monday Apr 26 1:45 PM
Mumbai, April 26 (IANS) Aishwarya Rai started her film career with Mani
Ratnam's Tamil film 'Iruvar' in 1997, but says she feels 'confident' about
doing more Tamil films only now after the multilingual 'Raavan' with the
National Award winning director.
'I understand a bit of Tamil and speak a bit of it. For me, it is very
important that I understand the meaning of my dialogues before I deliver them.
I can't just mug up the dialogues. So for 'Raavan', I made sure I knew what I
was saying and yes, I have improved a lot on the language and I am confident
about doing more Tamil stuff in future,' Aishwarya said.

'After 'Raavan', it was like - 'Come on! Bring on 'Robot' (now 'Endhiran'),'
she told reporters at the music launch of 'Raavan' here Saturday.

'Raavan' is Ratnam's much-awaited project and also stars Abhishek Bachchan,
southern superstar Vikram and Bhojpuri star Ravi Kishan. The movie has been
simultaneously shot in Hindi and Tamil, with a slightly different cast.

Aishwarya plays Ragini, a classical dance teacher. The first look into the
movie shows her dancing gracefully in a song where she has been picturised
getting cosy with Vikram, who plays her husband in the Hindi version of the
film.

One mention of how beautiful the dance moves looked, and Aishwarya said:
'Aww...Thank you so much.'

Talking about her role, she said: 'This was an extremely challenging role for
me. To shoot it in Hindi and Tamil at the same time was quite a task. But the
experience was so wonderful that if Mani sir asks me, I am ready to do it all
over again.'

According to the 36-year-old, her role was a discovery and a mystery.

'Ragini is a strong woman and very relatable to the modern Indian woman. She
speaks her mind. I say discovery because we kept discovering fantastic
locations and got to see so many places. We used to trek every morning to be on
the sets...

'The role remained a mystery because I was playing the leading lady and there I
was with no make-up, no fancy clothes and all drenched in rain with mud all
over. But that's what Mani sir expects from us to keep it all as real as it can
get,' she said.

Aishwarya says they used to give shots with 'snakes a whisper away' and that
they 'must have donated blood to 300 leeches'.

'All in all, it was an incredibly original experience. It was almost like being
on a 'Fear Factor' show,' she added.

The movie, co-produced by Reliance BIG Pictures and Madras Talkies, is expected
to release June 18.

Just wanted to write how I felt at the start..

somebody had asked for translation of this song. couldn't locate his
post now, so posting here.

At places, it doesn't make sense. Seems I got the hindi words wrong,
or couldn't understand what Gulzar sab had in mind. so if you can
clarify on it, please do share.

Behne De

arey aankh se boond gira koi
(shed a drop of water from the eye)

chingari ka tukda jala koi
(ignite some piece of spark)

ummeed ko aag laga zara
(set hope afire)

sehra ki pyaas bujha zara
(quench the thirst of the desert)

ummeed ko aag laga zara
sehra ki pyaas bujha zara
ghan itna baras ki galane lagoon
(O cloud! rain so much that I begin to dissolve)
main paani ke oopar tarne lagoon
(I begin to float on the water)

behne de mujhe behne de
(let me flow)
mujhe behne de mujhe behne de

o behne de mujhe behne de
mujhe behne de mujhe behne de

behne de ghanghor ghata
(let me float, o heavy clouds)
behne de paani ki tarah
(let me float like water)
saagar me ja girna hai
(I have to go fall into the sea)
bahne de nadiya ki tarah
(let me flow like a river)

shart lagi hai mar jaane ki

jeena hai to pyaar me
(if one can't live in love)
deh kahi bhi ho mera
(wherever my body may be)
jaan rahi hai yaar me
(my life has been in my friend)

beh ja beh ja
(flow on, flow on)
hai saagar ka kahna
(so the sea says)
beh ja beh ja
hai nadiya ko behna
(the river has to flow on)

patte se tapakati boond ki
aawaaz sunaai di thi
(the sound of a drop of water falling from the leaf was heard)
nadiya me tapak kar gum ho ja

beh gaya beh gaya

jo rah gaya rah gaya
(whoever couldn't get flown, he got lost)
beh gaya beh gaya
jo rah gaya rah gaya

behne de mujhe behne de
mujhe behne de mujhe behne de

mujhe behne de mujhe behne de

behne de ghanghor ghata
behne de paani ki tarah

bahne de nadiya ki tarah

mera pal pal ang ang bhar diya
(moment by moment, all organs of my body were filled)
tu ne jaan pe junoo sa kar diya
(you have cast a madness on my soul)
mera hai kya jo main haar doon
(what is mine that I can loose on you)
jaan teri hai tujh pe waar doon
(my life is yours, I will sacrifice it for you)

doob gaye jo suna hai saare
tere dere aate hain
(all those who come to your camp, I have so heard that they all have
drowned)
din ke chullooo me bechare
dubakiyaa gote khaate hain
(they sink and float and dive in the handful of water of the day)

bah ja bah ja
(flow on, flow on)
chal tod kinaare ko
(go break the shore)
bah ja bah ja
bhar de majhdhaare ko
(fill up the midstream)

chingari udha ke raakh se
(by making a spark fly from the ash)
ik boond gira ke aankh se
(by shedding a drop of water from the eye)
chalne ka ishara kar gaya
(someone has signaled of going away)

tar gaya tar gaya
(became self-actualized)
sab bhar gaya bhar gaya
(everything become full)
tar gaya tar gaya
sab bhar gaya bhar gaya

behne de mujhe behne de
mujhe behne de mujhe behne de

[arr] Thok De Killi lyrics and translation

2010-04-26 Thread V S Rawat
http://www.world4free.in/2010/03/thok-de-killi-raavan-lyrics.html

Song Name: Thok De Killi
Film/Album: Raavan
Singer(s): Sukhwinder Singh, Am'nico
Music Director: A R Rahman
Lyricist: Gulzar

Thok di killi, thok di killi
(hammer the nail) (put the nail on the wall?)
(I think this Killi is wrong, it is Gilli, from the village game of
Gulli-Danda in which one wooden pallet strikes other smaller wood
piece to throw it far away. The piece put atop the cricket wickets is
also called same gilli)

Ke door nahin hai, chalega dilli
(it is not afar, will you go to Delhi)
(Note: Ab Dilli Door Nahi, (Dehli is no more far) was the name of a
film, and it has become like an idiom, meaning something is
achievable, things are not on ivory tower. may be they are referring
to that concept)
Sabko ghoore aankh dikhaye tanashahi kare, darraye
(someone stares at everyone, fixates his eyes on them to instil fear
in them, it is doing dictorship, is making afraid) (pronunciation is
not clear in this song)

O bhagad billi, o thok di killi
(billi is cat, bagad billi is a mischievious, fearsome, nuisance cat)
Tu maar de danda, udha de killi
(note: Yupp, so it is indeed gilli danda play, (Strike the bat, let
the gilli fly)

Itna hi vitnaye jab bhi hadd se aagey zad me aayi
(not clear) whenver it goes beyond the limit and reaches the boundary)
Aankh mein kaala kaajal, aur naak mein nathli, kaan mein jhumka
(has black paste in the eyes, and has gold ring in the nose, has
earring in the ears)
Paon me pehene bichua aur dhanye bhanye maare thumka
(is wearing rings in the toes of feet, and is shaking his waist an
hips left and right - a dance jerk called thumka)
Aase paase sabko ghoore dekhe aur dikhaye tever
(is staring everybody nearby, is seeing everyone and showing its temper)
Mujre ka nazrana maange, heeray panne nakdi zevar
(is asking for monetary tip for its own display/ dance, is aksing for
diamond, emerald, cash and jwelleries in this tip)
Bichde bichde keh ke humko khoob udaye khilli dilli
(??)

Jhoothi sachchi seh li, thumri kajri jo bhi keh li
(whether it was true or false, we tolerated, thumri, or kajri (two
styles of classical vocal singing) whatever it said
Humne ek tihaai ye ghungroo chhod ke chatt par tehli
(we have one third,??? she removed the ghungroo (metal ornament of
feet), and roamed around on the roof)
Jhoothi hai makkaar nachaiya, na koi maari na koi baiya
(this dancer is untruthful, she is a cheat, ???)
Boondh boondh ke kapat bara main dil behlata ta tha thaiya
(every drop of it is filled with falsehood, ??? ta ta thaiya dancing
steps)
Bichde bichde keh ke humko khoob udaye khilli dilli

O thok di killi, o thok di killi
Ke door nahin hai, chalega dilli

Raat ka maal, raaton ne lutaa
(the property of night, got looted by nights)
Chaand taaron ke guchche churaye
(moon is steeling the bunches of stars)
Din nikalna tha, apna bhi nikla
(the day has to come, our day also started)
Kisme dum hai ke suraj bujaye
(who has the might to extinguish the sun)
Kisme dum hai ke suraj bujaye
Aaja milke baithe, haal sunawe dil ka
(come, let's sit together, let's tell the condition of our heart)
kelon ko khaate gaye, ham ko pehnke chilka chilka
(they keep on eating the bananas, and they are throwing its peels for us)
Bichde bichde keh ke humko khoob udaye gilli dilli

Sehte sehte ab to gardan ghar tak tar jaate hain
(we have been tolerating for so long that our neck has become ???)
Choti ho gayi kabarein, bin mundi bhi marr jaate hain
(the graves have become shorter, people die with their head chopped to
accomodate)
Sadiyon se chalta aaya hai ooch neech ka lambha kissa
(for centuries, the long tale of privileged and unprivileged has been
going on)
Ab ki baar hisaab chuka le, cheen ke le le apna hissa
(let's get even this time, snatch away the portion that rightfully is
yours)
Apna khoon bhi laal hi hoga, khol ke dekh le khaal ke jhilli
(our blood would also be red, it seems, you can see by opening the
membrane of the skin)

Thok thok thok di killi, o thok di killi
Ke door nahin hai, chalega dilli
Sabko ghoore aankh dikhaye tanashahi kare daraye

O thok di killi, o bhagad billi
Ke door nahin hai, chalega dilli
Sabko ghoore aankh dikhaye, sabko ghoore aankh dikhaye, sabko ghoore
aankh dikhaye
Tanashahi kare daraye

Re: [arr] Re: Rediff Reviews Raavan- Exquisite

2010-04-26 Thread Indmov Buff
Two observations on hate-comments (not just Rediff but elsewhere over the past
few years)

1)I think with time I've come to the conclusion that there are people who just
don't like his work purely because they just can't or rather, (stubbornly)
don't want to fully appreciate the recognition he's got and in turn given
Indian music. Perhaps because their favourite music director (whoever it may
be) however great they were in their era was unable to do what AR has done
today. But that is what we call - the circle of life. Because in 50 years time,
there may be someone else in the forefront and if this someone else has the
ability and does indeed go onto win 100 Oscars, I am not going to 'reject'
his/her music purely because AR wasn't given the 100 Oscars and this new kid on
the block was.

2) Simply said, there is some sort of Rahman-generation-gap! The times when AR
made Roja, Uzhavan, May madam and the likes are now gone. Rahman has moved on
and so has music.

Says a lot about Beera, right?

From upbeat to intense, Raavan's mood changes gears with Karthik's blazing
rendition of Behne de. And while Rahman builds a suitably thunderous aura to
match the fierce passions of Gulzar's words, this is essentially a
performance- oriented creation. At times reminiscent of Sonu Nigam's [ Images
] feverish chant in Dil Se's Satrangi re, though much restrained, Karthik
 delivers a sonorous punch.

Remember her delicate whispers in Meenaxi [ Images
]'s Yeh rishta kya kehlata hai Khili re?

Reena Bhardwaj returns to her dainty roots with the leisurely, amorous and
soft strains of Khili re.

Post Beera, the sound of bigul makes another

Arey yaar, ARR composed the song the previous night of the show, the
track list was already out and millions of CDs were already made, so
how can it be included in the CD?

:-) :-)

It must have happened in several other movies also, but we got to
notice it just now. It is the compulsion of releasing the music one or
two months before the release of them film, so that the popularity of
the music brings spectators to the halls, but film is still being
processed, and the director could feel to include/ exclude something
in the movie after the CD was released. If that inclusion was not in
CD, or that exclusion was in the CD (like blue song yaar mila tha
mujhko or dil se song tere ishq nachaya kar thayya thayya), then it
becomes noticeable to the listeners. If that inclusion exclusion
doesn't involve music, listeners don't come to know about it.

I think we have to live with it, the alternative will be to stopping
the director from modifying the movie after the release of CD, that
would hinder director from making a good film.

Dear All,
Has it happened to anyone else that your most favourite song in any ARR album
is panned by critics as the weakest song of the album. It has happened to me
many times so I just wanted to know if I was not alone.

Alaipayudhey - September madham. I simply skip all songs like snehigidhane,
kadhal sadugudu and go to this song because I loved this too much. But everyone
says this is the weakest song in the album
Laagan - Radha kaise na jale. I dont even listen to mitwa, gana na and I skip
to this song straight away.
Yuva/Aydha Eluthu - Nenjam ellam
VTV - Anbil avan sertha
Rhythm - Ayyo pathikuchu

Now again in Raavan I cant even listen to anything else other than Ranjha
Ranjha with Rekha Bharadwaj's voice and I see so many mails claiming that to be
the weakest song !!!

Anyone ?

[arr] [semi ARR] - the revival of Ila Arun

2010-04-26 Thread vedavid manick
A singer whose era of popularity was the early 90's with songs like Choli Ke
Peeche, is now seeing herself taking on the role of singer more frequently
these days. Her latest song Kata Kata form Raavan in my view marks her Third
hit in a row after Slumdog Millionaire and Well Done Abba. Her performance in
Kata Kata is simply awsome, as is the whole song, requiring mainly on
percussion. Brilliant, which only Rahman could do.

Her style and genre is raw and earthy in my view and while does not suit
everyone, to me is a welcome change on the current music scene. She did such a
brilliant job in Kata Kata, I cannot fathom even singers like Richa Sharma
doing half of what she did in there.

No offence to the punjabis out there, but i was really getting fed up of every
son sounding like bangra, something that even Rahman did for a while (the
chiggy wiggy debacle of Blue). Now I am hoping that with tihs breathtaking
album and song, that the current trends of Hindi music would change to be or
embracing of the rich musical folk music of india in states outside of punjab
like Rajastan, Bihar and others. India is so diverce in culture, and its reall
a shame that the only style Westerners recognise is bangra.

Good going to Ila Arun, A R Rahman and Mani Ratnam for this album.

responsibility of chosing words falls on him.
I love Gulzaar saab's lyrics, he is the finest lyricist of present time.. I
just expressed what I felt about a specific portion of the song. As I said
before, when I hear it multiple times, I may start liking it :)

Re: [arr] Sonu Nigam tweets about raavan

2010-04-26 Thread Rivjot
Sonu said the song does not exist, and Behne De exists.. so it cant be Behne
De. Tamil audio launch is only few days away, so very soon we will get to know
which song he is referring to.

Re: [arr] Raavan - is it the best album so far ?

2010-04-26 Thread Roshan
Delhi 6 was great! but there is something in Raavan that is making it above
all of it. it could be because of the earthy, folksy kind of music. or it
could be because of my own musical taste. like AJ pointed out, it is very
subjective to the listeners' taste. :) I was just checking to see if there
is anyone who thought like me.

Delhi 6 is still on my play list, btw. :)

i know it is too early to make comments like that. but couldn't help

saying it. the songs are instantly catchy. all songs hook you up

instantly. and can't stop listening to it. even songs in Dil se needed

some time to grow on. but this one just doesn't want to let me put

  down my earphones!

What he means is that it's not just his album. There are many more artistes on
it. So it will take time depending on who else is involved.
