Hi group,
I know it's been ages since I posted here. First of all, thank you all so much
for your immense support. It's really nice of you to acknowledge a non-ARR post
and wish me lol. So I'll just go ahead and make it ARR related :)

Like Gomtesh said, I've sung in the chorus for the Tamil Semmozhi Manadu song
and hopefully I'll feature in the video too. It was a great experience :)

Once again, I thank you all sincerely from the bottom of my heart for your love
and support :)

Long Live ARR!!
Cheers!

Not really; not all the times! There was an incidence someone had shared in
the group about how much he understands a fan's feeling. A fan clicked a
photo with AR, and AR noticed there was no much light. So they went near the
door, faced the sun and re-clicked the photo. Just to ensure that the photo
is clearly visible.

I've personally seen AR himself asking a fan "Do you want to take a pic?"
More than once.

Just that he should be in a relaxed mood ;-) You'll get your chance, all the
best!

[arr] Guessing ARR's Responses

2010-05-15 Thread AJ
Some hypothetical interactions and guesses as to how ARR would respond, given
what we know of ARR:

1) ARR Fan to ARR:
"Sir, I miss your 90s music so much. Please go back to your 90s style...your
music was better then. Your music today just doesn't have that magic."

ARR to ARR Fan:
"Thanks so much for appreciating my work and I hope you like my next album."

2) Bappi Lahhiri to ARR:
"Your Jai Ho song is copied from my song. Just watch, someday, I will surpass
your awards!"

ARR to Bappi:
"Wish you the best always, Bappida...smiles, walks away"

3) Jagjit Singh to ARR:
"I will only respect you once you compose a ghazal. Are you capable of
composing a ghazal? Ghazal is THE definition of music!"

ARR to Jagjit:
"I always love your ghazals and have been inspired by them. You are truly a
great artist and I have only respect for you. Touches feet, says Namaste,
smiles, walks away."

4) Intense fan of ARR meeting ARR for first time:
"Ohhh! My Lord! Grabs ARR's leg and doesn't let go. Cries, and cries,
and cries..my God, my God, my Godyou are my God! I love you! This is
unbelievable! Finally Keeps crying"

ARR to Intense fan:
"Feels awkward. Pulls away leg. Helps fan to get up. Shakes his hand and says,
"Thanks for all your love and support." Smiles.

@shahul,

Though i dont agree with many of charu's opinions but i have to tell this..

Charu has mostly praised AR before. This is the first time I am seeing him
critize. He praised AR for SDM,D6. I have read it earlier.

Charu is quite popular in tamilnadu for good and bad reasons.

And writers can write abt anythng and everything. We cant object that.

Having said all these I didnt like a line of what he wrote about AR
on the last article. 'Looks like AR, along with IR is going to join the list of
pension earners' is a strongly objectionable statement.

Anyways, Just ignore.

Guys

I heard Shauk Hai just now. Im surprised myself how I hadn't heard it before. I
loved it.

Truly a small lil gem, sadly pretty unknown.

Thanks Vishwesh for mentioning the song. Really a pretty touching number.

[arr] Re: Are singers bound by contract not to sing an unreleased song

2010-05-15 Thread Pravinder
As far as I know,
Singers or music composers have no rights over the music, its the music company
who buys it and sells it has absolute rights.
When singers or MDs perform their songs they have to ask the permission
beforehand form the recording company.

[arr] I initially wondered how I was going to do it: A.R. Rahman

2010-05-15 Thread satish_srini
"The Tamil was of a very high standard and I initially wondered how I was
going to do it, but thankfully it has come out well." This was how A.R. Rahman
described his experience of working with the anthem for the World Classical
Tamil Conference which was released on Saturday.

Apparently, the tune for the anthem came to him immediately, but production was
quite another matter. "It took two to two-and-a-half months, but we were
working with a large crew – almost 70 singers," Rahman, dapper in a rich
reddish-brown kurtha with an embroidered panel running down the front, told
reporters on the eve of the function to release the anthem.

"All of us together worked on the anthem – There was TMS [T.M. Soundararajan],
Yuvan [Shankar Raja], Shruti Hassan, P.Sushila…(to name a few). Basically, I
have been busy in Hollywood and also touring. Therefore I was working on a
tight schedule and was available only for two or three days, so people who
could come then joined us," he said to a question on how the singers were
chosen. A new verse on Kamban and Avvaiyar was added almost when the composing
was over, and had to be incorporated into the final cut.

TMS begins with "Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum," the first lines of the anthem
composed by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Some of the other top playback
artistes featuring in the anthem include Harini, Hariharan, Benny Dayal,
Srinivas, Vijay Jesudas, Naresh Iyer. Rahman's nephew G.V.Prakash and sister
Rehana have also joined the ensemble.

The thing about this anthem, Rahman says, is that it also features singers who
have distinguished themselves in other genres of music such as Carnatic (Aruna
Sayeeram, Bombay Jaishree, Nithyashree and Soumya), folk, Sufi (M.Y.Abdul
Ghani, Khajamoideen, S.Sabumoideen), and even rap (Blaaze). Another key aspect
is that three generations of singers have participated.

Responding to a complaint that the words in his songs were often drowned out by
the instruments, he says, "I think you will hear the words in this song. In
fact we have kept the instruments to a minimum so that the words are clear."
The traditional Tamil nagaswaram and tavil blend melodiously with the guitar
and drums, even as the carnatic notes wind seamlessly with the rap.

And what are his favourite lines from the anthem? For some one who added a line
in Tamil in his Oscars acceptance speech, the answer was predictable:
"Semmozhiyaana Tamizh mozhiyaam," the line that runs right through as the
chorus.

Deepa Mehta sees Webber’s Bombay Dreams

15 May, 2010 | By Jeremy Kay

The Indian director will bring Broadway musical Bombay Dreams to the big
screen with a score by AR Rahman.

Deepa Mehta will direct Beverly Hills-based Marquee Pictures’ first project,
an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical *Bombay Dreams* with
Oscar winner A R Rahman set to compose the score.

*Monsoon Wedding * screenwriter
Sabrina Dhawan will adapt the musical, a Romeo And Juliet update set in the
high-stakes world of Bollywood that may be shot in 3D. Arclight Films is
handling sales here.

Marquee, set up by former Universal senior executive Jeff Segal, producer
Steve Waterman, Arclight managing director Gary Hamilton and Azure Media
Group chairman Steve Wilkinson, will partner with Lloyd Webber’s The Really
Useful Group.

Production will kick off in and around Mumbai in 2011 with an as yet unnamed
Indian partner.

“It was deeply rewarding for me to see A R Rahman’s work recognised in
America when he won two Oscars and I am thrilled to be working with him
again on this exciting project,” Lloyd Webber said.

[arr] Shekhar Kapur announces his next at Cannes

2010-05-15 Thread satish_srini
Kapur is better known not as one who made Masoom and Mr India, but as one who
made the notorious Indian dacoit, Phoolan Devi, into an iconic screen heroine
in Bandit Queen. Interestingly, the movie went on to make the dacoit a
real-life star. She was voted to India's Parliament, though the violence she
had lived by in Chambal Ravines ultimately got her. She was murdered.

Bandit Queen helped Kapur to garner critical acclaim and foster his ties with
the Queen of Film Festivals, Cannes. The work was screened here in the mid
1990s, and this year, Kapur is on the renowned international jury here, a
position that Sharmila Tagore, Nandita Das, Aishwarya Rai and Arundhati Roy had
held at different points in time.

What is different about them and Kapur is that he plans to nurture his ties
with the Festival still further by bringing his movie here next year. Called
Paani, its principal shooting will begin this November in Singapore and Dubai.
Based on a book by Maude Barlow, Blue Covenant: the global water crisis and the
coming battle for the right… and scripted by David Farr, Paani will tell a dark
story about the looming water crisis.

Announcing this at a Press conference here today to coincide with the ongoing
Cannes Film Festival, Kapur said his movie will dramatise how this shortage
will affect relationships between individuals, cities, States and nations. The
beautiful young daughter of the chairman of the world's largest water
corporation arrives in the Upper City of plentiful. On a chance encounter in
the impoverished Lower City, she is kidnapped by the young handsome water
warrior.

A love story that changes minds and methods, Paani will be set to music by A.R
Rahman.

Kapur added that water could well become a weapon in the future with corporates
taking over its distribution. "This is what I hope my work will draw attention
to, provoke a debate and hopefully help find a solution to this grave problem",
he explained. When asked whether it could help catch the eye of the
politician, Kapur quipped that his Bandit Queen did manage to do that. Phoolan
Devi gave up arms, served her sentence and went on to become a political figure.

And Paani hopes to melt hearts and move minds with its tale of young love that
is unwittingly drawn into this messy revolution. "It is the story of young love
caught in the flurry of conflict and war between two cities, one that is rich
and waterful and the other that is poor and waterless, where the water rats are
forced steal that precious liquid".

[arr] Karunanidhi Releases Theme Song for Classical Tamil Conference

2010-05-15 Thread satish_srini
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here today released the theme song for
the World Classical Tamil Conference, to be held in Coimbatore next month, the
tunes of which have been composed by Oscar-winning musician A R Rahman.

In his message to motivate the youth, Karunanidhi said confidence was the first
step towards success and achievement.

"My confidence, perseverance and hard work have brought me where I am today,"
he said.

Lavishing praises on Rahman, the DMK president said the maestro achieved
stardom and fame purely due to hard work and self-confidence and his story was
a motivation for youth to aim and achieve big.

Rahman's family converted to Islam many years ago and now the musician is a
"shining star" of the community, the Chief Minister said.

Recalling double Oscars that Rehman got last year for "Slumdog Millionaire",
Karunanidhi said despite being hospitalised then for a back surgery, he had
written to Rahman lauding him for his achievement.

On the theme song, lyrics for which were penned by him, Karunanidhi said he was
"amazed" after listening to the song.

Speaking on his work, Rahman said his dream of making three generation of
singers sing has come true with topnotch singers of yesteryear and the present
crop lending their voices for the song.

[arr] Are singers bound by contract not to sing an unreleased song

2010-05-15 Thread V S Rawat
Could anyone please share the information he has on this aspect.

Singers sing their film/ album songs on various live or TV programs.

So, say, Sonu Nigam can sing his ravan song, that was not in the
album, in various live or TV programs.

Is there any clause in their contract that they will not sing a song
anywhere if it is not released in audio album

if so, then it is an odd alienation of the product one is making from
its uses, those among us who have read marxism would be able to
understand what I am saying.

Guys

I heard Shauk Hai just now. Im surprised myself how I hadn't heard it
before. I loved it.

Truly a small lil gem, sadly pretty unknown.

Thanks Vishwesh for mentioning the song. Really a pretty touching number.

I agree that wrong placement would reduce (rather undermine) the
impact of the song.

Still, listeners and viewers have an inherent curiosity as to where
the song could have been there in the film. If that curiosity gets
satisfied, that is a big relief for us all.

In Bose, that sweetest bengali mukhda lullaby was shown only mukhda
two lines in film, that did not satisfy us fully, but it still
satisfied our curiosity about where a lullaby could have been in a
film based on a revolutionary leader.

So, we will always be wondering for our entire lives where thayya
thayya could have been in Dil Se. I so often thought and couldn't find
any situation in the film where such a deep emotional earthly explicit
song could have been put among the mostly deeply philosophical rest of
the songs of the movie.

(just to share, I even wrote a film story in which I created a perfect
situation to use Thayya Thayya song, so perfect as it would make one
feel that the song was originally created for this very situation.
Now, whenever I hear of think of that song, I imagine the situation in
my story, and the enjoyment increased manifold. :-) )

Similar feeling for Yaar Mila Tha Mujhko in blue, I couldn't think of
any situation when such a simpler, low profile song could be there in
other highly technical, full of audio effect songs.

Of course, they can just put some music part of the song play in the
background so that the song is not "underused" and then when the full
song is released in some other film, we could recognize it from the
background that it could have been the song for that situation.

Great combo they indeed are, but it does not lessen the unanimous
feeling of being depraved among all of us fan on Mani not putting
songs in film, songs that have to be great because the combo gives
great songs and visuals, and not one but THREE songs, my god.
