Transcript of ARR Interview in STAR VIJAY
Rahmaniacs,

The transcript of the ARR Interview in Koffee with Anu is herewith for the
benefit of people, who were not able to view it, and for people, who were not
able to understand it fully.

Anu :- You have beeen so much of growth. Is it true that you started playing
harmonium from the age of four ?

ARR :- I was just trying to ( smilingly )

Anu :- Was it your most fascinating instrument, or did you try everything and
then come to this ?

ARR :- That was the first instrument which I started. My father used to cover
it with a cloth, and teach me which note was from where. So, he used to teach
me, that the note below 3 Black ones was F, 2 Was C, I used to remember it like
a riddle. So, I would be asked to find which note was from where by my father.
I was not perfect, but can find out which note was where because of playing it.

Anu :- You went on to play in Raja Sir's Music right ?

ARR :- I was playing for Malayalam composer Arjuna Master, Telugu composer
Ramesh Naidu. That time, I got an Invitation from Raja Sir. Raja sir was
playing for my father before. In that rememberance, Raja Sir called me thinking
that we can call Shekhar 's son. That time, was the first recording for
Moondram Pirai. That time, he told me that I was very young, and told me to
come later. Then he called me after two years. That time, I worked with him for
1.5 years.
Anu :- When I was talking with Mani Sir, he told me that one remarkable thing
abt Rahman was that he was playing like a small boy with Raja Sir, and then he
decided that he would go on his own as a young man. So What inspired you to go
of your own ?

ARR :- I got frustrated after playing too much of Film Music. There was a
monotony of playing continuosly in the morning, evening.. I started feeling, if
there was no life other than that. Then , I started thinking of making
commercials, where we can do music of our own. When we learn Western Classical
music and play, we play whatever notes are there in it. No Free thinking in it.
But in Classical, we can take a raaga, and improvise in it. we can do it in
Jazz also. Film Music is also like that. The Notes that are given has to be
played . So, we never know if we have the real skills of composing or not, when
doing Film Music, and also an urge to see, if there was something else that
would be interesting to do in the work. Adventurous Model.

Anu :- As a child, you have been completely engrossed in Music. What about
playing gilly, playing cricket in the road ??

ARR :- I have just flown kites.. I have even broken my hand in that. But there
has been no fights with kites. More of Music, and less of all these. I dont
miss those times, I like whatever happened. Because, when one thing reduces,
another thing increases. I always believe in that .

Anu :- Whats your relationship with your siblings ?

ARR :- I and my elder sister studied Music together. After that she got
married. And the remaining two sisters used to look after me, when I used to
come back from the studios. They used to take care of me like giving me coffee
etc. They also became different , when they became 16, which I am going to go
through ( my daugther is now 12 years ) . They think differently. I was the
only male member in my family. All others were females. Probably, Prakash was
the next male member. ( My sister's son ), and thats the little story ( smiles
)

Anu :- Are your children interested in music ?

ARR :- Yes. I am going to teach them. They are also learning it. Then, they can
make a choice. I will not be pushing them into music, nor even forcing them.

Anu :- It seems your style of work is different. You keep adding a lot of
things here and there, and for a long time, you keep experiementing with it. So
Hows it ?

ARR :- For some songs, it happens like that, and for some songs, we get to know
at the beginning, that this would be enough. For the same Love Songs, Duet
Songs, Item Number, we ourselves tend to become bored, and people will surely
feel bored. So, if it becomes interesting to us, then it would be surely 10%
more interesting for people who watch. That is the real challenge.

Anu :- Tell me abt Sufism

ARR :- It can be said as Divine Love. Unconditional Love for every Creation, of
your GOD. Treating everyone equally irrespective of any materialistic grades .
Equal Love, Equal Justice to all. This is what I have learnt till date, There
are much more things to learn . I am still at LKG.

Anu :- Many have told, that its Divine Inspiration. How do you think of it ?

ARR :- Nowadays, if you see, there are a lot of choices. There are a lot of

Re: [arr] How I got hooked to Rahman's music.... My Story !

Wow,neatly written...
Neither do i know if ill get to even see rahman from a distance but he too
lives close
to my heart thru his soulful music...
Long live rahman... :)

On 8/22/08, Dinesh Vaidya <[EMAIL PROTECTED] co.in> wrote:
Here is a chance for all to make meaningful discussion. I will start
with my story as how I got hooked to Rahman's music..

The year was 1993, probably Jan end. I had gone to Hyderabad for
office work, had some spare time so met my family friends. They
recommended me to see a Tamil movie which was the talk of the town in
those days. The friend was at loss of words in describing the movie
and how it was different and all that. I had seen quite a few Tamil /
Telugu movies till then, thanks to our old DoorDarshan who used to
telecast regional movies at 1.30PM every sunday. So I ventured out to
see that movie. Unfortunately did not get ticket and returned to Pune.
But the name of the movie had registered in my mind.

In Pune, I just casually checked with the local Video library (
remember those VHS cassettes ? ) if he has heard of a Tamil movie
called ROJA. He dished out the cassette and I was on my way home. The
cassette rolled on and the chase of the terrorist in the Jungles of
Kashmir began with a low frequency droning sound and sudden sharp
tones in between. Something registered in mine and my family's mind
that this is not the standard Tamil movie, it is something different... .

That day we watched Tamil Roja, WITHOUT SUBTITLES, at a stretch and
understood every word of it ! There was a general consensus that the
music is totally different. Over the next 24 hours, we watched the
movie twice or thrice, this time for the music and Background score.
The name RAHMAN had not registered in our heads even after that.

Then the hunt for the Tamil Audio cassette started. I could not locate
the cassette anywhere in Pune but at Mumbai's VT station, I got a
cassette ( obviously pirated ) with Roja on one side and Surian songs
on another. I still have that cassette with me.

One year later my career took me to Abu Dhabi where I was in the midst
of many Malyali / Tamil employees and got to see VCD movies of
Gentleman and Thiruda Thiruda, again, without subtitles. The music of
Thiruda Thiruda simply blew me away and I felt a distinct familiarity
with the music. The enquiry about Music Director yielded a reply
"RAHMAN". "Ah ! I have heard his music in Roja", I told my friends. My
Tamil friends suddenly started taking me seriously. They got for me
audio cassettes of Puthiya Mugham, Kadhalan and other movies which
were released by then.

I returned to India in 1997 and during my immediate business trip to
Chennai, went to a Cassette shop in Adyar Signal and asked him to get
me whatever cassettes he had with RAHMAN as music director ...all
languages ! He enquired if I had come with enough money. Luckily I
had.

Some years after, One Chennai based friend LAXMAN introduced me to
Rahman fan group and then I typed my first query on Vaishnavar audio.
Since then life is a nonstop joyful journey. Because of Rahman my
friends circle got expanded exponentially, Gopal, Vijay (Happy
Birthday Vijay !), Sirish, Amith, Durba, entire RAHMANIA performing
group "The Wandering Souls" consisting of my Nephews and Nieces,
supremely talented bunch of guys led by Anmol Bhave, and all of you
the face-less Rahmaniacs !

Now there is a definite purpose to living a meaningful life with
Rahman around, there is a non-stop Rahman song playing in the head,
the mobile ringtone is ofcourse Rahman. I found that Rahman music is a
definite cure to depression..

I have not met Rahman, not do I think I will ever get a chance to meet
him. But through his Music, I feel he is so close to me that if I do
meet him, I will probably say " Hello Rahman ! So we meet again."

I always thank GOD for introducing me to Rahman's music... .

Best regards

Yes, Benny Is a Dharan find. He 1st sung his song in the Tamil movie
"Sivi" early 2007, in the Song " Oh Nenje".

Correct me if im wrong...

btw... i feel his voice is a " Karthik + Naresh Iyer + Tippu" mix.

good singer overall... :)

Quoting ARR in his latest interview and echoing my exact thoughts that
I have held for years. In a world of chaos, struggle, loss,
heart-ache, destruction, cruelty, corruption, and greed, music is such
a balm. And when it comes to deep, thoughtful music like ARR's, there
is nothing out there that surpasses such music to help us feel more
hopeful about the goodness of humanity and the harmony in nature. We
so often lose touch with the natural rhythms of the universe. I think
good, deep, thoughtful, and soulful music helps us to realign our
minds and bodies to the natural harmonics that surround us. Whenever
I hear touching music full of harmony and peace, it reorients my mind
to what is truly beautiful about existence and shows a glimpse of our
potential as human beings to live in a better world. ARR's music has
always symbolized so many important things for me..sharing,
valuing differences, tolerance and respect for other cultures,
individual expression, the freedom to create without artificial
bounds, the divinity within all of life, all of creation, the bonds
among us, and pure love.

Life can be so painful. Music is such a blessing. Thank God for
beautiful music to help us feel more hopeful about our potential and
reminding us of the permanence within us and around us despite change
and destruction and death.

[arr] A msg sound and clear to ATM critics

2007-11-08 Thread Aarthi aarthi
I did mention in my prev post tat v shud nt restrict ARR from performing movies
like ATM
For those so called critics who wer bashing ARR for taking up ATM,
Boss himself told today tat d director had asked 6 kuthu numbers and he had
to give it..
Importantly he said v shud respect d mass who loves such songs too..so i had
to give to give dem wat they want..

He did mention abt d over hype and expectations which has infact prevented few
of his works from bcoming hit..
He even told tat as soon as a song comes up,v start analysing into pieces!!
As soon as i heard him say tat only our group and its offlate msgs on ATM
striked me..

Atleast now tat v know wat ARR himself had told abt these things,v ll better b
careful b4 v show ourselves to this world as a fan of this great man..
Since v know he s follwing our forum pretty carefully lets just avoid such
things in future..
 Kudos

[arr] Kind request to ppl giving ATM reviews

2007-10-26 Thread Aarthi aarthi
Azhagiya Tamil Magan, don’t want to put it as a much hyped album atleast not in
our group I guess, bcos ppl know wat a vijay starring movie wud give us..May b
bcos I dint expect anything, this album seems to b sooo good for me..But its
really disheartening to c lots of negative reviews on this movie..hmmm I want
to put in my thots on d so called reviews given by lots of ppl here..

1.Why compare???
Guys,v very well know ATM is a perfect commercial movie and u know
Vijay comes as some Super hero who has this extra ordinary power of forseeing
wat s gonna happen in future(don’t know for how long directors r gonna stick to
d same old stories, huh)After having such a story line, how can one expect to
this album with roja, dilse kind a music huh plsss..ARR has perfectly done
justice to his job by offering great foot tapping music..If u visit these vijay
forums d music’s reach is perfectly felt der..Der r still lots of places wer
ppl don’t even know if der existed a movie Uyire, for those ppl Rahman had to do
some music and he has done with style..so plss before u compare,do it with
stuff like God Father, parashuram,New no issues..For me ATM is d best commercial
movie given by our Boss..

2.No Remixes pls!!Not this director pls!!
Utter nonsense!!ARR himself doesn’t like remixes tat v know but wen
d story requires it he has to do it..Tats wat is required of a MD wen u score a
music for a movie..and god tat ponmagal song doesn’t deserve to b criticized so
much guys, pls give it some time...now comes d axe on d directors..d same set of
ppl wer crying few yrs bak tat rahman is not doing music in tamil and now wen
he does it he s being criticized..if u think maniratnam and shankar can alone
bring d best out of our boss,v ll have to wait an entire year for one rahman
album..Guys many ppl like me hardly understand hindi, for me an album by ARR in
tamil is like a festival time..so pls I need Rahman to compose more of tamil
songs for tat albums like ATM r a real answer guys..

3.Early Reviews!!
One thing I hate in this forum is ppl queing up to give in der
reviews as soon a album is released..Even b4 I cud grab a cd for myself I saw
lots of reviews both positive ones and negative ones..many wud just go by wat u
guys say and think its not even worth getting d cd..is this wat v r here
for???If u dint like it wait give it some time and den start posting in ur
views,pl this is my very very sincere request…

4.Too much of analysation!!
I don’t know anything in music, don’t know wat u guys r talking most
of d time..But d fact tat v r all his fans is wat v r here for..my sincere
advice to lots of music pundits here is don’t analyse an album like ATM with
all ur extraordinary skills in music,it ll surely b a letdown..just forget
everything and enjoy and I am sure u ll love it immediately..

5.D so called Reviews!!
“the Rahman touch is missing”
“todays is a sad day for rahman fans”
“this reminds me of tat song”
Guys pls give it a break..Its so disgusting wen someone in d name of a fan
questions Rahman’s capabilities..If u dint like it put it in a way tat doesn’t
hurt fans like me ok..say u feel it s like tat and not general statements like
d above ones..

6.My take on ATM!!
Finally, for me ATM is just a fabulous album..its bin quite sometime
tat I ve liked an entire album but ATM has made me feel it..Its like yuvi 6
sixers for me..wow valayapathi, merlin menroa, ella pugazhum just bowled me
over..According to me this album is well above Godfather and can equally place
it near shivaji..

We all know RahulDravid is a technically brilliant batsman,
occasionally he plays a dhoni kind of innings according to d NEED OF D
HOUR,does tat by any way question Dravid’s technical brilliance??its very
similar with our boss too..V know his brilliance, occasionally movies like this
shows our boss’ versatility..so plsss don’t make absurd remarks based on ur
opinions in public forums like this..Enjoy ATM guys and lets keep waiting for
Jodha akbar..

Regards,
aarthi

HJ has done it again with his Ghajini.. pushed Ah Aah to second place. If you hear the songs of Ghajini, you will know what sort of melody we are missing from Rahman. The songs of Ghajini remind you of Rahman's yester-years (esp. oru malai) - smooth flowing melody.Hope Rahman goes back in time for "Jil Endru Oru Kadhal" (I dont have any hope on KSR's Godfather)Sam.

hey Ram's suggestion sounds good...the quote"The Man The Master The Musician Behind globalisation of Indian music"seems great...could some one pls take this  into consideration

My small Suggestion for QUOTE goes here ... hope it makes sense ... i agree people saying that we r not trying to spread publicity ... imagine a guitarist normally has a guitar somewhere in the T-shirt and hence doesnt need the word Guitarist on it ... its something like that ... hence when its a A.R.Rahman T-shirt ... dont u think we should have something that symbolizes music ... How about adding some """MUSICAL NOTE""" type stuff with some text under it ... for those who are not aware of MUSIC NOTE - kindly type it in GOOGLE Image search ... you will find it ... and my selection of QUOTE would be ...""" The Man * The Master * The MagicianBehind globalization of Indian Music """Ramkumar
