[arr] 'A R Rahman's indigenous masterpeices'

2009-05-31 Thread Mohd Nash

Enough has been confabbed about AR Rahman's feat at the Oscars for his work in
Slumdog Millionaire. The reason is obvious even to the dimwits: that he
composed for a British movie that has greater audience than the Indian movies.
But few realize that his tryst with Indian movies deserved more Oscars in spite
of acceding the fact that India glorified him with many internal awards before
the recent international recognition. Here I wish to list some of his
mesmerizing music compositions in Tamil that not only ridiculously outperform
his work in Slumdog but also deserve a worthy recognition for years to come.

1. Roja

Thanks to Mani Ratnam, ARR (as he is popularly known) entered the film industry
with the biggest bang in the Tamil Film history that changed the notion about
music in the common man's mind. From refreshing Chinna Chinna Aasai to
heartbreaking Kadhal Rojave and the spicy Rukkumani, he showed he had
immense potential and variety. The movie also started one of the best
director-musician duos of our times.

2. Bombay

Arguably his best composition to date, he almost united the whole nation after
the Bombay riots in 1993 with a compelling touch in the theme music of the
movie. The theme music will make anybody in the country shed at least a drop of
tear. The impact was such that Arvindswamy and Manisha Koirala became a
household name in Tamil Nadu.

3. Duet

Duet is the most underrated and comparatively unpopular music album of ARR.
Anybody who loves music will agree on this and it is his best romantic album
having another genius called SPB (SP Balasubramaniam) singing his heart out for
all the songs.

4. Gentleman

Shankar chose to go with ARR with his first directorial venture and he wouldn’t
ever regret for that. It seemed as though “Chikku bukku raile” was especially
composed for Prabhudeva’s human anatomy defying dance movements. A very
soothing “En veettu thottathil” followed by a catchy “Ottagathai Kattiko” made
this composition an extremely memorable one for ARR and his fans.

5. Kadhalan

The extremely racy “Take it easy Urvasi” makes one feel why didn’t we have
mobile phones then to have this number as the ring tone. The mesmerizing
“Ennavale adi Ennavale” that directly touched countless young hearts marks its
place in eternity. All other songs especially “Mukkala Mukkabala” were the most
popular then and the movie also took Prabhu Deva to stardom overnight that he
would not have imagined in his wildest dreams, thanks to ARR and Shankar.

6. Indian (‘Hindustani’ in Hindi)

In his next association with Shankar, ARR not only met the expectations but
also beat them by miles as it also involved a legend called Kamal Haasan. A
spellbinding “Telephone manipol” can be copied completely by a music director
50 years from now and it would still be a hit song. An underrated
“Pachaikiligal tholodu” brought out a fresh view to father-daughter
relationship. The highlight of ARR’s contribution in this movie is the BGM that
is thoroughly adrenalin pumping justifying the pest control being done by
Indian ‘thatha’.

7. Alaipayuthey (‘Saathiya’ in Hindi)

A youth extravaganza by Mani Ratnam, this movie brought out the best of ARR for
the younger generation. “Endrendrum Punnagai” made college students go berserk
with its immaculate aptness to the song’s situation and I would not be
surprised if it still does. “Pachhai Nirame” brought out a great singer in
Hariharan modulating his voice effortlessly for various moods sketched out in
the song. The theme song “Alaipyuthey” is another great example of ARR’s
ability to turn classical tunes to feet-tapping modern tunes.

8. Ayudha Ezhuthu (‘Yuva’ in Hindi)

A completely underrated movie and music album for Mani-ARR combo standards,
this one challenged ARR by demanding songs for 7 completely different
situations. The standout song “Jana Gana Mana” is as patriotic as his “Vande
Mataram” album. A vernal “Fanaa” makes everyone who is out of college, feel
nostalgic. A folk in the form of “Sandai Kozhi” established ARR as an
all-rounder.

9. Kandukondain Kandukondain

This album of ARR is the best melody collection of ARR, next to ‘Duet’. The
anxious “Enna solla pogirai” would break the hearts of all men who are waiting
for a positive answer from their ladies. The romantic “Kandukondain
Kandukondain” (though poorly visualized) brought the best lyrics out of
Vairamuthu. The mellifluent “Konjum Mainakkale” takes melody to another level
that people had not seen since “Thalapathy” of IR (Ilayaraja) days.

It would be impractical to list all of ARR’s albums though most of them are of
extremely high quality. Some of those that are worth mentioning are “Pudhiya
Mugam”, “Karuthamma”, “Kadhal Desam”, “Minsara Kanavu”, “Jeans”, “En Swasa
Kaatre”, “Rhythm”, “Kannathil Muthamittal”, “Boys”, “Sillunu Oru Kadhal”. These
movies also have some great compositions that would never die with time,

[arr] To the man who brought us the Oscar!

2009-02-25 Thread Mohd Nash
Over the last two days there has been nothing but Rahman on TV and in
newspapers. The number of things that are being said about him is so much that
even the most avid couch potato might have missed quite a few of those
anecdotes and profuse remarks that have been aired. So, it will not be a bad
idea to try and compile some of the best anecdotes that were narrated for the
sheer reading pleasure of all Rahman fans.

SPB was around on TV for quite some time on the 23rd of February and he said a
lot about Rahman and the way he worked. He recalled the days of Roja. SPB
believes that he was the first one to have rendered his voice for a Rahman song
(Kadhal Rojave). That day, before the recording began Rahman told SPB that he
was not sure about why he was being given this opportunity when master
composers like Ilayaraja and MS Viswanathan were still around. He also said
that having made his debut, if all went well; he would manage to hang around
for maybe a period of five years. Then SPB shifted five years down the line to
Minsaara Kanavu. Then, SPB asked Rahman, “you told me that you were going to
stick around for 5 years, its past that now” and Rahman replied, “I think I
have got a bonus of 5 more years..”

SPB also remarked that Rahman was the only composer who managed to make someone
else lend their voice to SPB himself, the singer was Sukhvinder Singh. To date,
it remains the only instance when someone else has sung for SPB on screen.

Then there was Sukhvinder Singh who remembered that it was his association with
Rahman in Dil Se (the Chayya Chayya) song that really launched his career.
Director Rajkumar Santhoshi was also around telling us about how well Rahman
understood the medium of cinema and how he listens carefully to every situation
before giving a tune, about how he keeps playing on the piano endlessly until
the director spots one combination that he likes. More than that, he said that
it is Rahman’s ability to do classy background scores that sets him apart, in
short, Rahman takes on a movie as a whole.

Then there were a host of young singers who were discovered and blooded by
Rahman from the most unlikely of scenarios. Most of you might have heard about
the story of Naresh Iyer. He was participating in a reality show for singers
where Rahman was one of the judges. After a particular round, Rahman told
Naresh Iyer that there was both good news and bad news. The bad news was that
Naresh had been eliminated from the competition while the good news was that
Rahman had decided to use his voice. Rang De Basanti happened and Naresh Iyer
has not looked back since. Like Naresh, there are other singers like
Madhushree, Benny Dayal etc., who are all beneficiaries of Rahman’s unique
ability to spot talent.

There are dozens of other stories that comes to ones mind, many of them being
associated with Rahman’s affinity to working right in the middle of the night;
he has however exempted SPB from such unearthly recording hours. Then, all of
you might have read on the site about how he carried his harmonium along with
him on his honeymoon. We have heard about him globetrotting in his search for
new sounds and styles of music and many more, you could go on talking about
Rahman for hours together.

But the one point that everyone seemed to echo in common was about the man’s
simplicity. Almost everyone used these words ‘he is a wonderful human being’.
It was not planned or stage managed, but people sitting in different parts of
India at different times used almost the same words to describe Rahman. That
says a lot about his character, neither success, money nor fame have changed
him one bit. He still remains as enthusiastic about music as he was when he
made his debut. His down to earth attitude was reflected in the way he said
‘ella pugazhum iraivanukke’ on the Oscar stage, it also showed us that he is
not a man to forget his roots.

That is why one couldn’t help seeing the lighter side when a journalist on TV
asked a guest about whether the Oscar would take Rahman away from India. If he
had such plans he would have vanished long back, he has such boundless talent.
And, the most gratifying thought that comes from this Oscar award is the
knowledge that Rahman is capable of many more wonders. One is so confident
about this because anyone who has heard Rahman’s songs over the years will know
that ‘Jaye Ho’ or ‘O Saaya’ are not his best compositions by a long shot. If
they are good enough for Oscars, then we cannot imagine the heights that await
him. God bless Rahman! Jaye Ho!

[arr] Vairamuthu on lyrics in Manirathinam's project

2008-08-28 Thread Mohd Nash
Be it in literature, lyrics, poems, or politics, the contributions of
Vairamuthu are breathtaking.
Vairamuthu is presently busy with giant-films such as 'Robot', 'Sultan-The
Warrior', 'Marma Yogi' and many more.
The trio of Rahman-Manirathinam-Vairamuthu has constantly given many musical
masterpieces as in 'Roja', 'Alaipayuthe' and 'Kannathil Muthamittal'.
For the forthcoming Manirathinam's next tri-version film (Hindi, Tamil,
Telugu), Vairamuthu would handle the lyrics in Tamil whereas Gulzar has been
roped in for the Hindi version.
When Vairamuthu was asked if the Tamil lyrics of the songs have shaped up
better than the Hindi version, he said, Lyricist Gulzar is more eminent than
me; but Tamil is a more mellifluous language than Hindi and hence the Tamil
songs might have been more glamorous. says the five-time National Award winner
in the category of best lyrics.
Modesty sure presents talent the right way.

[arr] Rahman to westernize Thirukkural?

2008-07-25 Thread Mohd Nash
In a recent interview to a tabloid, A R Rahman expressed his desire to release
the Tamil verse collection Thirukkural in rap format. He replied so when asked
what would be his contribution to the younger generation.

Rahman further mentioned that the project would involve desi Rapper Blazee, who
is already on the job of preparing the format and would be a novel attempt to
popularize Tamil literature.
As per Rahman, Blazee would sing Thirukkural in rap version and Carnatic
music would be used to mix in the background.
Rahman was also quoted as saying by the tabloid that he would only produce
the album and music would be rendered by Blazee himself.

[arr] “I wanted my son to debut in a Shankar movie”

2008-07-12 Thread Mohd Nash
The Sakarakatti audio launch held at the Sathyam theatres registered a
near-full attendance of invitees; and significantly it brought 20 directors of
Tamil cinema in one stage. While Vikram and Susi Ganesan took a leave of
absence owing to their Kanthaswamy shoot schedules in Mexico, Radhika
Sharathkumar made a few heads turn with her entry.

First copy of the CD was released by Rama Narayanan and received together by
A R Rahman’s mother and Shanthanu’s mother and yesteryear actor Poornima
Bhagyaraj. Two songs were screened and the launch was peppered with emotional
speeches by a few directors.

After praising Shanthanu for his aerobics in the songs, Ameer wished him to fly
high in his career after the release of the movie. He further expressed his
longing to meet A R Rahman. “I have traveled far wide and met personalities;
however, I haven’t got an opportunity to visit Rahman at his home in Chennai.
It is my wish to visit him very soon,” he noted.

Jeyam Ravi revealed that he was earlier associated as an Assistant Director in
many movies produced by Dhanu. He further stated that Shanthanu has tremendous
networking skills and knows more people in the industry than him.

It was Bharathiraja who added zing to the event by expressing his longing and
desire for Rahman and his music. He said that it is wonderful to witness the
third generation in action and that Dhanu is a real crowd puller. After which,
he concentrated mostly on pulling pranks at Rahman revealing how difficult it
was to get tunes from him. “It is easier to extract milk from a tigress,”
Bharathiraja said.

Bharathiraja also declared that he would make Rahman act in one of his movies.
“His eyes are like Mono Lisa’s, beautiful and expressive. It would be such a
waste if I didn’t employ them in one of my movies. He is acting in one of my
movies,” Bharathiraja declared assertively.

A R Rahman, in his speech, mentioned that he was apprehensive to take up
Sakarakatti since he had no free time for another year at that time. “However,
director Prabhu already had five of my Hindi songs in mind and asked my consent
to use the tunes. We only selected two of them and the rest four are fresh
tunes,” Rahman said.

Bhagyaraj let a peek of fatherly anxiety by saying that he wanted his son to
debut either with Shankar or Maniratnam. “I was amazed at Prabhu’s talent of
story telling and didn’t have to think twice before sending Shantunu to the
sets of Sakarakatti,” he reminisced. “I was quite lucky in terms of my career,
maybe because my mother named me after luck. I wish the luck to continue in the
case of my son too,” Bhagyaraj said. He also requested Shanthanu to consider
new directors in his career unlike other established actors who think twice
before signing in for debutant directors’ ventures.

The two songs, Chinamma Chilakamma and Marudaani Vizhiyil, which were screened,
included extensive visual effects done by Soundarya Rajnikanth’s Ochar Studios.

[arr] Can Rahman do a Jaane Tu… in Tamil?

2008-07-11 Thread Mohd Nash
A.R Rahman's music, catering to the youth is one of the main reasons for Aamir
Khan Productions Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, turning into a super hit. Now the big
question being asked in Kollywood is whether Rahman can rub off some of this
magic to a Tamil film also with newcomers and based on youth titled
Sakkarakkati?
It is the launch pad of actor Bhagyaraj's son Shanthnoo Bhagyaraj as a hero.
The film produced by veteran producer Kalaipuli S.Thanu, is directed by his son
Kalaa Prabhu who is also making his debut The film is said to be a musical
love story which has some breadth taking locations and mesmerizing music by A.R
Rahman. Many years back Rahman rocked big time with the music of Kadhal Desam,
with songs like Musthafa, Mustafa, don't worry Musthafa… picturised on Vineeth
and Abbas, which became a sort of anthem among the youth of that generation.
The songs of Sakkarakkati will be shown at Friday's audio launch at Sathyam
Cinemas. Let us hope Rahman is able to create the old magic once more.

[arr] Sakkarakkati audio being launched on Friday evening at Sathyam Cinemas

2008-07-09 Thread Mohd Nash
Leading producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu, is launching Bhagyaraj's son Shanthanoo as
a hero with Sakkarakkati which is long in the making. The film is also Thanu’s
son Kalaa Prabhu's directorial debut. The highlight of Sakkarakkati is the
music by A.R Rahman. The audio of the film is being launched on Friday evening
at Sathyam Cinemas, in the presence of industry bigwigs.
The film has a new heroine Ishita Sharma along with Vedhika. All the others
like Amith, Lokesh, Harish are newcomers. Sakkarakkati is a musical love story
against a peppy and happening youth background. It is a light hearted
entertainer which I'm sure the generation next would lap up, says its young
director Kalaa Prabhu. The audio of the film has been snapped up by Sony BMG
and a lot is riding on it for A.R Rahman.

[arr] What is A.R. Rahman’s secret title?

2008-03-12 Thread Mohd Nash
Maestro A.R. Rahman’s appearance in public events, leave alone press meets, is
a rare occurrence. And when he called the media to address them, it was indeed
a surprise

The occasion for this is the inauguration of his music school – KM Conservatory
of Music. Addressing the media, Rahman

said that this school would be for students wishing to pursue music
courses either as a profession or a vocation.

He lamented that India, though rich and diverse in music, lacks symphony
orchestras. To set this right, the students trained in the institute will
pursue learning to play in a symphony orchestra. Initially, it will be formed
partially with Indian and foreign students; however, he aims at creating one
entirely for Indian students.
KM Conservatory of Music, for the time being, will be operated from the place
adjacent to his studio in Kodambakkam. But about three acres of land has
already been acquired in the suburbs in which class rooms, recording studios,
concert hall and residences for faculties and students residing outside the
city will be built. KM Conservatory of Music will operate in collaboration with
Audio Media Education, an Apple certified institution. It has also been
disclosed that talks are on with the University of Madras to grant Deemed
University status to this institution.
When the reporters quizzed him on the why he had named the school KM, the
maestro refused to divulge it and said the explanation behind the title will
remain a secret close to his heart.
On composing music for the films of the Superstar, Rahman said he had worked
with him several times earlier; his current projects with Rajini are Sultan the
Warrior and Robot.

[arr] Rahman – The January Secret.

2008-03-12 Thread Mohd Nash
The month of January seems to turn the Musical Wizard on; there is a special
connection between Rahman and January. Whenever he has had an album or a movie
release in January it has for sure gone on to rock the charts for months, maybe
an entire year altogether. Not impressed, well then the last three Januaries
(2006, 2007 2008) have been nothing but Rahman, not in Kollywood but
definitely so in Bollywood.
2006 - On the 26th of January, the movie Rang De Basanti released. Now if you
have not heard Rang De Basanti (which is quite close to impossible) then you
possibly do not know that Rahman is very close to the best in India when it
comes to delivering high energy Punjabi numbers. The Rang De Basanti song which
had Daler Mehendi in full throttle with the desi drums for company pumped
adrenalin into the farthest corners of our body. Then there was the
‘Paathshala’ which might be called the ‘School of Rock/Rap’ for Indian film
music, something never heard or tired before. Then Khalbali with the distinct
Arabic feel that made you want to dance. And of course, there were the
signature Rahman melodies, Roobaroo (the song that unearthed Naresh Iyer) and
Tu Bin Bataayein that left a lump in your throat- January 2006.

2007 - We need not tell you what was unleashed in January 2007. For the ones
not so fortunate with their memory- Guru. Another Mani Ratnam-Rahman combo that
gave us everything that we needed for our hearing pleasures. Maiya Maiya, again
an Arabic touch but very cleverly tweaked to suit our tastes. But then this was
just the average part of an album that had two lilting melodies- Tere Bina and
Aye Hairathe, the latter especially making us linger on in the sweet symphony
of Hariharan’s voice as it blended with the subtly used tables. Not to forget
the thundering background music that gave us the thrill.

2008- The music is just catching on in some parts of India but Rahman has
definitely scored a hat-trick of hits in successive Januaries. Jodha-Akbar has
sealed the love story of Rahman and January (Jodha Akbar Music was released in
January). It may not be the ‘first time love’ kind of songs but Rahman has
given one of the finest albums in recent times. Jashn-e-Bahara is definitely
the most ‘melting melody’ that has come out since Aie Hairathe- the perfect use
of Sonu Nigam’s sweet voice. ‘In Lamhon Ke Daaman’ too makes us lose ourselves
in layers of finely crafted sound. But the cake is really taken by the
instrumental versions where the flute replaces the vocals-mesmerizing. And for
the thrill, hear Azeem-o-shaan shahenshah with its resounding drums.

So, what’s for January 2009- we cannot wait.

[arr] Taare, Rahman shine @ Star Screen

2008-01-12 Thread Mohd Nash
The awards season of the year kicked off with the Nokia Fourteenth Annual Star
Screen Awards at Mumbai last evening. The evening was all glitz and glam with
every famous personality in Bollywood attending the gala event. Contrary to
previous years, there was tough competition in all the categories
But the strongest of the contenders for almost all the awards were just two
films – Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par and Yash Raj’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer
Chak De.

The awards finally ended up as a give-and-take affair with Chak De walking away
with the Best Film; Shah Rukh being adjudged the Best Actor, and the ensemble
of girls bagging the Best Supporting actress awards. TZP, on the other hand,
bagged the best supporting actor award for Aamir Khan. Awards for Best Story,
Best Child Actor and Best Lyricist went to Amol Gupte, Darsheel and Prasoon
Joshi, respectively. Shimit Amin shared the Best Director Award for Chak De
with Aamir for TZP.
The Bachchans had to eat the humble pie with most of the awards remaining
elusive to them. Even Abhishek’s Guru only ended up bagging the Best Music
Director Award for A.R Rahman. Kareena Kapoor was the only unanimous choice for
the Best Actress Award for her scintillating performance in Jab We Met. The
Lifetime Achievement award went to veteran actor Manoj Kumar.
The evening had its share of song and dance performances by leading stars with
Shah Rukh grooving to the Dard-e Disco number from his Om Shanti Om. Sadly,
this much talked about film could only garner the Best Choreographer Award for
its director Farah Khan and Best Newcomer (Female) for Deepika Padukone.

[arr] Rahman: reaching new heights

2008-01-05 Thread Mohd Nash
The music wizard, who made India proud, turns 41 today (January 6). The gifted
musician, has reached incredible heights at this young age.
Consider these facts: His first ever movie album ‘Roja’ was listed in Time
magazine’s Top 10 Movie Soundtracks of All Time. He has composed the score
for the Chinese film Warriors of Heaven and Earth (2003). He has scored music
for Hollywood movies like ‘Provoked’ and co-scored for ‘Elizabeth: The Golden
Age’. He has received the prestigious Padma Sree award. He has now become an
important name in global music scenario.
This is definitely an amazing and incredible travel for a boy, who lost his
father at the age of nine. His family had to manage its living by renting out
musical equipments of the Shekhar.
  The earlier days
Rahman had been served as a keyboardist and an arranger in bands such as
Roots and Nemesis Avenue with friends including Sivamani, embracing
numerous music genres. He played the keyboard and piano, in addition to, among
others, the synthesizer, the harmonium and the guitar. The young genius began
his training in music under Master Dhanraj. At the age of 11, he joined, as a
keyboardist, the troupe of composer Ilayaraja. The boy later played in the
orchestra of M. S. Viswanathan and Ramesh Naidu. He also accompanied the likes
of Zakir Hussain, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and L. Shankar on world tours and
obtained a scholarship to Trinity College of Music, where he graduated with a
degree in Western classical music. The young man with hunger for achieving
something started his own music recording and mixing studio, called the
Panchathan Record Inn in 1991. He started composing music for advertisements,
TV channels, and documentaries. The break came in 1992, when he was
approached by director Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for
‘Roja’. The dream debut declared to the entire world about the arrival of a
genius. It sealed his place as a unique musician. Young Rahman received the
prestigious Rajat Kamal award for Best Music Director at the National Film
Awards. It was the first time that a film composer receiving the award.
  Awards pour in
Rahman’s dream run continued and awards became a routine for him. He got
National Awards for three more times after ‘Roja’, for the films ‘Minsaara
Kanavu’ (1997), ‘Lagaan’ (2002) and ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ (2003), the most
ever by any composer. He gave distinctive musical scores for number of films
like ‘Bombay’, ‘Kadhalan’, ‘Indira’, ‘Jeans’, ‘Muthu’, ‘Indian’, ‘Mudhalvan’
‘Kandukondein Kandukondein’, ‘Rhythm’ and ‘Love Birds’. His latest works in
Tamil, ‘Sivaji’ and ‘Azhagiya Tamil Magan’ too have created a lot of sensation.
Rahman has also made distinctive mark in Bollywood. He made his debut in
‘Rangeela’, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. He followed it up with many super hit
scores for films including ‘Dil Se’ and ‘Taal’. The sales of these albums
created new records in the musical industry. Now the magical musician is
working on ‘Chamki Chameli’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ set for release in 2008, along
with Hindi version of Tamil blockbuster Ghajini. Rahman’s versatility in
classical, folk, jazz, reggae, soft rock and other styles make his works so
special that people go mad over his music. He is well versed in various genres
of music including Carnatic music, Western classical, Hindustani and the
Qawwali. His scores have a variety covering all these genres. The way he
experiments with sound is something unprecedented in Indian musical scenario.
He has also made many experiments with various kinds of voices.
  Global recognition
In 2002, he composed his maiden stage production Bombay Dreams (2002)
following a commission from famous musical theatre composer Andrew Lloyd
Webber. Furthermore, Rahman, along with the Finnish folk music band Värttinä,
composed the music for The Lord of the Rings theatre production. He composed
the piece Raga's Dance for Vanessa Mae's album Choreography (2004). In the
last six years, he has performed in three successful world tours of his
concerts to audiences in Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Dubai, UK, Canada, the
US (Hollywood Bowl and 3d tour) and India. A two-disc soundtrack, Introducing
A. R. Rahman, (2006) featuring 25 pieces he composed from his Tamil film scores
was released in May 2006.
  Inspiring the millions
Though he is liked by youth very much, the older generation too is enthralled
by his creativity. He made the entire nation proud when he came up with his
album ‘Vande Matharam’ in 1997, India's 50th anniversary of independence. It
won’t be an exaggeration to say that the album rekindled the feeling of freedom
struggle and a deep sense of patriotism. He did the same magic when he released
him ‘Jana Gana Mana’ album last year. He has utilised the great voices and
instrumental artists of India Today to bring out the feeling of worshiping our
beloved motherland.

[arr] 'Thamizhthaai Vaazhthu' to be set to music by AR Rehman

2007-11-13 Thread Mohd Nash
Neeraarung kadaluddutha nilamadandhai kezhilozhugum
Seeraarum vadhanamena thigazhbaratha kandamidhil
Thanks to AR Rehman, one can enjoy these beautiful words in praise of Mother
Tamil in music form. The Isai Puyal is to make an album on 'Thamizhthaai
Vaazhthu.'

In the 'Kalloori' audio release function, Balu Mahendra had requested that
after popularizing the music of Vande Mataram, AR Rehman should now sing the
praises of Thamizhthaai. Those present at the function supported Balu
Mahendra's request by applauding loudly as well as raising their hands in
request.
The suggestion given by Balu Mahndra has inspired the Isai Puyal in putting
the request into concrete action. He has decided to compose Thamizhthaai into
lilting music, work for which could commence from April 2008.

[arr] ATM audio tops the charts!

2007-11-03 Thread Mohd Nash
In audio sales among the films due for Diwali, it’s Vijay’s Azhagiya Tamil
Magan, which is topping the charts. A.R Rahman’s music for Tamil superstars has
always worked big time. Vijay fans have lapped up the album though it does not
have typical numbers you associate with Ilayathalapathi films. And the big
surprise is that the nephew of A.R Rahman, G.V Prakash’s Pollathavan, audio is
very popular with the youth and is at the number two position. The uncle and
nephew between them has pushed Yuvan down in audio sales this Diwali. Yuvan
Shankar Raja’s worst nightmare has come true, as he has been on a signing spree
dishing out music with factory precision. In the process his music lacked
newness, as he dished out tunes for three Diwali films- Kannanmoochi Yenada,
Machakaran, Vel. Among the lot Kannanmoochi Yenada and Machakaran songs are
hummable, while Vel is not his type of film and the audio is a major
disappointment.

[arr] Question Kapur on Rahman

2007-10-31 Thread Mohd Nash
Hi

I have been following Behindwoods' coverage on Elizabeth: the Golden Age
especially Shekhar Kapur's direction and the music by A.R.Rahman along with
Craig Armstrong.
Last evening during the special screening of this movie at the Irish Film
Institute in Dublin I had the privilege of meeting director Shekhar Kapur. The
movie is scheduled to release in UK and Ireland on November 2nd. But this was
an exclusive premiere show followed by a QA session with the director. I
luckily managed to get a ticket at the last minute for this event which was a
complete sell-out.
The audiences were allowed to interact with him after the screening was over.
Most of the questions raised were regarding the script and the cast. I was also
one among the lucky ones to get an opportunity to question Mr.Kapur.
I asked him to share the experiences he had with A.R.Rahman while working on
the music score for this movie. He introduced Rahman to the Irish audience
hailing him as the Mozart of Madras and told the audience that he picked Rahman
for his capability to produce melody easily just as Mozart did. There was also
a mention about Rahman's
musical roots and his successful collaboration with Scottish composer Craig
Armstrong in this movie. I am still wondering why I had to ask this question as
I am a die hard fan of Ilayaraaja and always argue with people who praise ARR,
a lot. But still the background music was world class.
Another person asked Mr.Kapur how difficult it was for him to migrate from
Bollywood to Hollywood and how both these film industries differ with each
other? The director did agree that there was too much politics involved in his
entry to Hollywood. But he quickly hinted that as a director when he says
sound, action it is the same story in Hollywood as well. He also made an
interesting remark that working in Bollywood is chaotic and it is more
organized in Hollywood. He went one step further by adding that working in
Hollywood is like shopping at a supermarket or a departmental store and working
in Bollywood is like shopping at a bazaar.
The event finished after an hour long interaction with the audience. I tried
my luck once again, this time asking the organizers of the event if they would
allow me to have a snap with Mr.Kapur. What a surprise. They agreed and I got
what I wanted.
  Thanks and Regards

[arr] ATM ready for Release

2007-10-30 Thread Mohd Nash
The problems which would have stalled the release of AZHAGIA TAMIL MAGAN for
Diwali has been sorted out between the producer “Swargachitra” Appachan and the
Distributor New Pyramid Saimira.. A.R.Rahman has almost completed the
re-recording and mixing which will facilitate the release of the movie for
Diwali. This film is slated for censor on 31st October. The music has already
become a chart buster and is now on the top.
Once the trailer and song sequences are telecast on the satellite channels,
it is definitely going to create ripples among Vijay’s fans. According to the
producer this film is going to be the best. They are planning to release 400
prints world wide. Lets hope this film should be a super hit.

[arr] Rahman rocks in 'Azhagiya Tamil Magan'!

2007-10-19 Thread Mohd Nash
Trust A R Rahman to come up with sizzling numbers.
After his sensationally rollicking show in 'Sivaji', which had the listeners
dancing in the aisles, Rahman is back to his rhythmic best in Vijay's 'Azhagiya
Tamil Magan'.
The film's audio is to be out only on October 22.
A teaser trailer of the film and some snatches of the audio track are already
available on the net. The full track list of the songs is also available.
Having a look at them and listening to the vignettes, it is clear that raja
of rhythms has delivered again.
The songs are catchy and carry with them agreeable ring of class and mass.
Going by what is available, the intro song seems to have been sung by the
music wizard himself. There is also a re-tuned version of the yesteryear hit
-Pon Magal Vanthal.
The trailer too is impressive with Vijay looking very energetic and
enterprising.
'Azhagiya Tamil Magan' is believed to feature Vijay, for the first time in
his career, in a double role.
The film stars Shriya and Namitha as heroines.

[arr] Act as a hero....? -AR Rehman laughs

2007-10-19 Thread Mohd Nash
AR Rehman's music is gaining worldwide popularity. Now there's a good
opportunity to enjoy seeing his music in person.
Two programs of AR Rehman have been arranged in Delhi next month. When asked
about it, he says, It has been my long time wish to give a music program in
Delhi. I am happy that a grand program has been arranged in the month of
December. I am rather tense because I want the program to go well. I also have
to dub my songs for the Hindi version of 'Sivaji.'

Do you aspire to become an actor?
Many musicians are attempting to act in films, but I do not aspire to become
a film hero. Such a question only makes me laugh. I have absolutely no interest
in acting, nor do I have any acting talent, says Rehman with a laugh.

He is anyway a hero in music!

[arr] Rahman’s Golden age has come

2007-10-14 Thread Mohd Nash
Not long ago, we heard that Rahman was composing songs for Shekar Kapur’s
Elizabeth-the Golden Age. The movie was screened at the recently concluded
Toronto International Film Festival, and is said to have received rave reviews.
Elizabeth-the Golden Age released yesterday, received accolades from the
critics, and some went on to say it is one the finest epic films in recent
times.
The battle sequences were stunning, and according to some critics its visuals
appear like a painting coming alive. What is heart warming is the fact that A R
Rahman’s musical score has come in for a special mention. “A musical score by
Craig Armstrong and A R Rahman is virtually a character in itself, huffing and
puffing through nearly every scene, provoking tension and calling characters to
action,” says the Hollywood Reporter. Chennaiites will have to wait a while
before they can be witness to all the grandeur, as the movie is not going to
hit the screens any time soon, for the restless souls there are trailers
available on the net.

[arr] ATM audio release

2007-10-14 Thread Mohd Nash
Vijay fans now have a reason to rejoice as their Ilaya
Thalapathy’s much-awaited Azhagiya Tamizh Magan is going to hit the screens on
Diwali. The film happens to have generated enough curiosity as it marks the
coming together of A R Rahman and Vijay. Though the pair had worked together
earlier for Udhaya, it did not create an impact due to its delayed release.
ATM on the other hand has been announced with much fanfare as Vijay pairs up
with Shriya for the first time. And this is her first release after Sivaji,
which has gone as per schedule. The final cut is being readied and theatres
have also been blocked. The movie’s brisk pace is evident from the audio
release date, which was announced recently. Rahman who has scored all the tunes
and the audio is to hit the stores on 15th October. They have got their timing
right! With just three weeks ahead of its release in theatres, it is just about
enough time for Rahman’s tunes to grow on its listeners. The
movie has five songs and sources say Vijay has crooned a number for this
movie; the release of the CD’s should put an end to all this guessing!

Songs of ATM sure to rock
  “Madhurai Pakkam Pogadhadi…Mallippoo Thalai Saikkum.
Thanjavur Pakkam Pogadhadi…Thalayattum Bommai Nikkum.
Thoothukkudi Pakkam Pogaadhadi…Kappal Thari Thattum”
  - A foot tapping folk song was shot in Karaikudi with Vijay Shreya. Special
mention must be made of the opening song, for which Rahman is said to be coming
up with a peppy and exciting folk type song that is sure to be a big hit with
the fans of Ilayathalapathy.
  “Valayapatti Thavile Thavile
  Jugalbandhi Vaikkum Mavale Mavale
  Jimikki Potta Mayile”
  - A peppy ‘kuthu’ number picturized on Vijay and Shreya, and shot in a
magnificent set in Binny Mills.
  “Kettu Rasitha Paadal Ondrai
  Meendum Indru Gnabagam Thoonda
  Kelaamal Kaiyilae Vanthaaye Kaathale”
  - Song picturised on Vijay and Shreya, and shot in the exotic locales of
Switzerland.
  “Marilyn Manroe Cloninga?

  - This song featuring Vijay and Namitha was shot in the beautiful islands of
Phuket, Thailand.
  “Ponmagal Vanthaal Porul Kodi Thanthal”
  - Retune of the 1971 hit song from Sivaji Ganesan starrer Sorgam. Director
Bharathan shot this song at grand sets put up at Chennai’s Film City. Some
Russian beauties danced in this number along with Vijay and Shriya.

Vijay is singing a song in the film, as per various media reports (not sure
yet as to which one). Lyricist Vaali is said to be re-doing the song “Azhagiya
Thamizh Magal Ival” from the old movie “Richshawkaaran” and will be writing the
lyrics to a fresh tune composed by AR Rahman.]. The story of the film is said
to revolve around extra sensory perception of the hero. Vijay dons double roles
in this film - as Guru and Prasad.
Pyramid Saimira Theatres Limited has purchased the world rights of the film
from producer ‘Swargachitra’ Appachan for a whopping Rs.25 Crore, the highest
ever for a Vijay film. Shreeman is all excited about his presence in Pokkiri
and Azhagiya Thamizh Magan. “ATM (Azhagiya Thamizh Magan) has a powerful script
which will be a feast to Vijay’s fans and a script never tried before by him.
Its great working with the Ilayathalapathy back to back and I am all geared up
for its commencement.” says excited Shreeman.

[arr] Will A.R. Rahman get an Oscar?

2007-08-29 Thread Mohd Nash
The Indian maestro A.R. Rahman has just completed a new English movie,
Elizabeth: The Golden Age, directed by Shekar Kapur - an Indian as well. It is
a sequel of Shekar’s very popular - Oscar winner and multiple Oscar nominee -
Elizabeth. Big names like Kate Blanchett, Oscar nominee Clive Owen and Geoffrey
Rush are involved in this project.

The first movie was made at a budget of $25 million and garnered more than
$60 million all over the world, and also bagged an Oscar for the best make up.
Apart from this, it was also nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role
award, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration award, Best Cinematography award, Best
Costume Design, including Best Picture award and not to forget the Best Music -
Original Dramatic Score by David Hirschfelder. David will also work in this
colossal project along with A.R. Rahman. The sequel of Elizabeth is getting
much bigger with much higher budget.

Also, chances are high for A.R. Rahman to be nominated for an Oscar. Shekar
Kapur, one of the finest directors that India has ever produced is very
optimistic about this movie. It will be released in the US this October and
Indian audience can catch this movie in the theatres only by next year. Hope we
get good news by January and better news by March. Behindwoods has only one
thing to say to Rahman: “We will pray for you brother”.

[arr] Lajjo- yes, no, maybe.

2007-05-28 Thread Mohd Nash
There has been a lot of speculation around Lajjo- the film that was to be
directed by Mani Ratnam starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The reason is
the non-committal attitude of the crew of the film whenever any details about
the actual progress were sought. The truth is that the progress of the project
seems to be stuck.

First Aamir was not satisfied with the script (he never is at the first
reading) and wanted a lot of changes to be made. That put off shooting
schedules till the end of 2006 and even that was not confirmed. Then Aamir got
himself busy with his directorial venture Taare Zameen Par which is now in its
post production stages. He has also allotted bulk dates to A.R.Murugadoss’s
Ghajini which began shooting recently. Apparently, Aamir has his hands full and
Lajjo is not on his mind at the moment.

Meanwhile Mani Ratnam too is busy in the International circuit with many
screenings of his film Guru at festivals all around the world. He was recently
in Cannes and from there he left for Spain for another screening. Mani suffered
a personal loss yesterday when his younger brother Srinivas (42) co-founder of
Madras Talkies passed away. Mani will sure take time recovering from this shock
and returning to work.

With the movie delayed almost indefinitely, heroine Kareena Kapoor has decided
to withdraw her commitment for Lajjo and make herself available for other
projects. This has added fuel to the speculations that Lajjo had been shelved.
Producer Bobby Bedi has however made a statement that Lajjo has been merely
delayed and will certainly be made.

This comes a few days after music director A.R.Rahman was asked the same
question. He too had said that Lajjo was definitely not shelved. Note that
neither Rahman nor Bedi specified when exactly Lajjo would get underway.

[arr] AR Rahman's hard work

2007-05-14 Thread Mohd Nash
It’s official now. AVM came up with an announcement on
Friday, the 10th of May on the release date of its next Magnum Opus production
- Sivaji.

The worldwide release date has been announced as 31st May.
Generally, expectations soar high where Shankar's movies are concerned - it
just got bigger with Rajini.
Sivaji will be AVM Productions' 168th movie. With Sivaji, Rajini's will
be completing his century in Kollywood. Another interesting fact is, this movie
is AVM-Rajini combo's 9 th venture together. Incidentally this is Shankar's 8th
movie, which happens to be his lucky number.

If you suppose Rajini-Shankar-AVM combination is big enough, then think again.
Because all the biggies in their respective fields of expertise have worked for
Sivaji. Camera by KV Anand, art direction by Thotta Dharani, editing by Antony,
dialogues by Sujatha, music by AR Rahman, lyrics by Vaali, Vairamuthu, Na
Muthukumar and Pa Vijay and stunts by Peter Haynes just to name a few.

AR Rahman's hard work seems to have obtained the desired results. As Sivaji's
songs, which are repeatedly broadcasted by all radio stations, are now the talk
of the town. The movie's BGM and re-recording, which have come out
exceptionally well and far more superior have been done at London and Czech
Republic's capital Prague.

Stunt master Peter Haynes' fight scenes have been made aiming at perfection. KV
Anand has used the latest technology Super 35 and 4K. It is the first time
that 4K technology is being used for a Tamil movie. Sivaji will also be the
first Tamil movie to have more number of prints than ever before. According to
the press release every teeny weeny bit of detail is taken care of.

[arr] ATM- Progressing fast!

2007-05-13 Thread Mohd Nash
The shoot of Vijay- Shriya, starrer Azhagiya Tamizh Magan directed by debutant
Bharathan is almost 85 percent over. Producer ‘Swaragachitra’ Appachan is a
happy man, as only portion leading to the climax and few songs remain to be
shot. Last two weeks, Vijay and Shriya were shooting non-stop for the film in
and around Hyderabad. A major portion of the film was canned at this schedule,
including fight scenes and portions of some romantic scenes. A.R Rahman is said
to have come out with some great numbers for the film. Our Ilayathalapathy is
very happy with the way the shoot is proceeding, unlike Pokkiri, where there
was a lot of tension with the director. Added to that, the buzz is that the
film will give a new look to Vijay and has the potential to be a big hit.
Meanwhile the film is very hot in the trade circuits, and all areas have gone
for a record price. Added to that in one of the areas, a resale has taken
place, as the trade is confident that the film will
release on August 15, as scheduled.

[arr] Waiting for `Sivaji`!

2007-05-07 Thread Mohd Nash
May is normally the big blockbuster month in world cinema- Hollywood,
Bollywood, and Kollywood. Every year without fail, the first Friday and the last
Friday of May will see a Hollywood mass movie mainly a big franchise film
releasing.
This year from Hollywood, it is Spider-man 3 on May 4 and Pirates of the
Caribbean 3 on May 25, both big movies with their Tamil versions. Surprisingly
there are no big Hindi movies this year, other than Shoot out at Lokhandwala
and Cheeni Kum both due on May 25. As far as Tamilnadu is concerned, there is
only one big blockbuster scheduled for release in May- Rajnikanth's magnum opus
Sivaji, which according to the trade is due on May 17. The latest we hear
from sources close to Shankar is that they are trying their best to complete
post production work of the film and release it on May 26. Remember Shankar's
big blockbusters Indian and Jeans were released in the month of May? The
leading exhibitors in Tamilnadu are not taking bookings for any new Tamil films
in May, as they are all waiting for Sivaji. Already half a dozen big and
small films producers have made it clear that they will release their ventures
only a month after Sivaji. Ajit's Kireedam, Vikram's Bheema
will announce their release strategy only after the release of the blockbuster
film. Along with that some small films too do not want to get in the way of the
mighty giant.

[arr] Rahman gives final touches to ‘Sivaji’

2007-05-02 Thread Mohd Nash
If a special award is instituted for the most awaited film of
the year, super star’s Sivaji will undoubtedly walk away with all the laurels.
This film can be clearly stated as the conglomeration of the ‘creamy layer’ of
Tamil film industry. From the producer to the director to the artists to the
musicians, the industry’s bigwigs are involved in this film.
This has naturally raised the barometric levels of audience’s expectations.

The film is in its final stages of wrapping up and music director A R Rahman is
back in town after completing re-recording work for Sivaji in London. Having
completed that, the genius is back in his home town and has immediately rushed
to the studios to oversee how the audio-mixing had shaped up. The count down
for the release of Sivaji has already begun and fans all over the world are
eagerly waiting for the D day.

[arr] Vedhika revealed that she is a big fan of A R Rehman

2007-04-25 Thread Mohd Nash
Vedhika has every reason to be happy today. In Muni,
her role had made her noticeable in Kollywood. And, what more, she has been
signed up for Kaala.

Vedhika divulged that she was initially apprehensive while shooting for Muni
with Lawrence as he was trained dance master.
But Lawrence turned out be a good teacher and was instrumental in
training me in the dance sequences, she said.

Talking about Kaala, she said: Though happy about the offer, I am scared at
the same time. With Simbu being in the cine field ever since his childhood and
having established his name in all spheres of movie-making, Vedhika is afraid
whether she will be able to match his performance.

Vedhika revealed that she is a big fan of A R Rehman. Her eyes light up when
she says that Rehman will be scoring the music for her next venture, Bagyaraj's
Sakara Katti.

Music director: A R Rahman

Singer(s): S P Balasubramanyam, Benny, Rehana

SPB rocks! You just can’t believe that SPB is a man of his age; where does all
that energy, that zing come from. Does singing for the Superstar turn on some
kind of switch, it surely must. This song is going to hit theaters like a
hurricane. There is no stopping the combination of Rajni-SPB and Rahman. This
time you have Shankar thrown in for good measure. You have to hear it, see

[arr] Shriya goes ga-ga on `Sivaji` audio

2007-04-15 Thread Mohd Nash
Shriya Saran cannot stopping talking about the songs in Sivaji. Says Shriya,
who was shooting a song with Vijay in Karaikudi for Azhagiya Tamil Magan (ATM)
: “I’m a big Rahman fan, and when I heard the Sivaji songs for the first time
at the shoot I just went crazy about them. Believe me, the way Shankar Sir has
shot the songs, along with Rajni Sir’s dance movements, they are sure to be
rocking.” Shriya says that one of the high points of her career will be that
she danced with the superstar to the tune of A.R Rahman whom she calls “the
Mozart of Indian film music”. She features in five out of the six songs in the
film. Says Shriya: “I’m there in all the songs, except Ballelika…., the
introductory song.” When asked about her favourite song in the album, Shriya
says: “I like all the songs and the way they are picturised. I’m sure that the
songs will become bigger once the film releases and the channels popularize
them. If you were to ask me my favourite song it is Vaaji,
Vaaji, , the title song.” Shriya refused to talk further on the songs, as she
feels the film and its presentation will talk for itself. Ever since the
shoot, she has been humming the Sivaji songs. Now that the album is out, she
has all the songs on her ipod, and hears it during the breaks.

[arr] Audio raises expectations on Sivaji

2007-04-11 Thread Mohd Nash
Ever since the audio launch of Sivaji, expectations are soaring high among the
Rajini-fans. Now director Shankar is busy pre-occupied with A R Rahman to get
the re-recording works for Sivaji completed.
Buzz is that the magnum opus movie produced by AVM Productions in their
golden jubilee year would hit the screens on 17 May.
The re-recording works are on at London. Rahman completed the first half of
re-recording for Sivaji at Paraguay while the second half is on at London.
The re-recording would match the world standards and the music composer is
using the latest and innovative instruments to produce a different sound.
Meanwhile Shankar is also busy with getting ready the trailer for Sivaji.

[arr] Sivaji audio – first week report – with statistics

2007-04-11 Thread Mohd Nash
Are you one of the die hard fans of Rajinikanth or A.R.Rahman who
eagerly wants to know how the audio of Sivaji is doing? Well, the verdict is
out and it’s a clear thumping victory for one of the best teams of Indian
Cinema history (AVM-Shankar-Rajini-Rahman).
AVM CEO Mr. S.C.Babu while talking to Behindwoods
correspondent in the US, revealed that the audio of Sivaji which opened up on
April 2nd is seeing one of biggest sales of recent times. There was a pre-order
of about 105,000 CDs and 90,000 cassettes, before the release. Repeat orders
were received even by the close of the first day and many retail outlets
reported stock outs. As on date, the total CD sales has notched up to about
140,000 and cassettes have touched 108,000. Orders are continuing to come in
from all parts of Tamilnadu. On the overseas front, the sales of CDs in
Malaysia and Singapore are reportedly setting new records.
The figures given above are specific to Tamil music. 'Sivaji
- The Boss' in Telugu has been licensed to Aditya Music and have reported brisk
sales in Andhra Pradesh (figures not available). As regards the overseas audio
sales, Ayngaran international couldn’t be contacted for details.

On the ring tone department, two lakh ring tones have been downloaded as of
yesterday. The popularity rating for ring tones of Sivaji songs are – Adiradi
tops the list, followed by Vaaji and Style finishing a close third.
Ringtones and true tones of Sivaji songs have been
available for just a few days now, but they have already broken some records.
The numbers are expected to increase sharply when more cellular operators will
be offering 'SIVAJI' downloads on their networks.

Seeing this frenzy, something that happens only for a Rajni movie, the
producers are planning a real treat for all Rajni fans. Imagine anyone calling
you on your mobile being greeted with ‘Naan oru thadava sonna, nooru thadava
sonna mathiri’ in superstar’s voice!! That’s exactly the trend that is going to
hit the whole of Tamil Nadu soon.
  As reported by us earlier, punch dialogues of Sivaji as caller tones;
imagine the response. You won’t be able to make three calls in a row without
hearing the superstar. That is brand Rajni for you!

[arr] AR Rahman off to London to record Sivaji's music

2007-04-11 Thread Mohd Nash
Like all Rajini's film ventures, Sivaji has
also been much talked about right from the date of announcement of the film.
Well, the fanfare continues. Kollywood's sources say that Sivaji's background
music is being recorded at London and Paraguay to raise it to international
standards.

This news is substantiated by the fact that A R Rahman has packed his
bags off to London last month to oversee the arrangements made for the
recording.

Meanwhile, the shooting is also not completely done with. Director Shankar, who
has an eye for detail and who is keen that every frame of the movie should be
talked about is shooting another song sequence at AVM Studios. Insiders say
that huge pricey sets have been constructed for this purpose.

[arr] Robo: Shankar and Ajth Kumar

2007-04-08 Thread Mohd Nash
After the release of Sivaji director Shankar may likely to clinch a deal with
Ajith Kumar for Robo. Previously the film Robo was set for Kamal hassan, but
the project didn’t take off properly due to some reasons.
The film based on scientific advancement, and it required lot of technical
works rather than theater artists, Shankar who is very keen in making of the
film, likely to approach Ajith after the Sivaji’s release. Sivaji audio seems
very promising and many people thanked A.R Rahman for his marvelous work in
Sivaji.

[arr] Re:Sivaji Lyrics...

2007-04-08 Thread Mohd Nash
Balelakka: SPB, Raihanah, Benny Chorus
  Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
A Rajini introduction song is a non-negotiable instrument of sorts. It has to
have SPB belting it out with his unmistakable gusto. It has to have some
pulsating beats. It must make you snap the fingers and tap the foot. This song
makes you do all that and plus some more. SPB is amazing with his
breath-controlled rendering. This man never ceases to amaze us. He might be
over 60. But who would say that after listening to this number. The interludes
and the rhythms give an extra pep to the proceedings. Raihanah (Rahman’s
sister) and Benny also chip in with their best. Muthukumar’s lyrics set out in
typical fashion.
Style: Rags, Tanvi, Suresh Peters, Blaaze
   Lyrics: Pa Vijay
The song works in many ways as it has a variegated pattern to it. As the
initial words suggest, the song talks of style, which is the essence of Rajini.
But Rahman, as he is wont to, has worked the tune in a slightly recondite way,
in that it moves around an attractively bewildering manner. You have Blaaze
letting out his typical staccato rap bits while Suresh Peters bungs in his
anglicized rendering. And suddenly, almost catching you unawares, you have
Tanvi chipping in with a beautiful morsel in traditional Tamil. Though the song
is multi-dimensional, it works, especially with its surprise swerves and
Rahman’s mastery over arrangements. Style is in Rajini and Rahman too.
  Vaaji Vaaji: Hariharan, Madhushree Chorus.
  Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Perhaps this will be the anthem of the State for some time to come.
Musically, the song may have nothing new. But Rahman’s genius lies in
packaging. Building layer by layer, he lets the song rise up like a beautifully
created skyscraper that is high on both aesthetics and utility. Rahman has made
Hariharan croon in a un-Hariharan-like manner. Perhaps that maybe the trick
that makes the song work and makes Vairamuthu’s lyrics stand out in beautiful
relief. Madhushree is adequate without being anything extraordinary. The tempo
and the beats make this a good mass song.
  Athiradee: AR Rahman, Sayanora
  Lyrics: Vaali
This is straight away Rahman turf. The man knows which song to pick and sing.
His nasal twang may not appeal the first time. But they just take control of
you over a period of time. Athiradee does. The lyrics are unabashedly Vaali as
he plays to the gallery big time. But his smart mind chisels out interesting
lines. Vaali deserves special plaudits for his ability to think in sync with
the modern generation. The rollicking beats and the guitar ensemble give a good
edifice for the song as Rahman gives it all he has. As a singer, Rahman has
also improvised, and innovated, with his voice. The effect is ethereal. The
song takes time to take effect on you, but once it does it doesn’t vanish.
That’s Rahman effect for you. A high-octane song.
  Sahana: Udit Narayanan, Chinmayee
  Lyrics: Vairamuthu
When it comes to Tamil words, Udit Narayanan’s tongue becomes a knife of
sorts as they (words) are chopped mercilessly. But here you will almost forget
that failing as the song and its inherent melody fill you in a cool embrace.
Chinmayee is Rahman’s big weapon. He uses her for songs that deserve something
special. Right from Kannathil Muthamittal we have been seeing that. Here too
the young girl sings with a rare elan which comes from the combination of
talent and intelligence. Chimayee’s speciality is that she is no one-type
singer. She can deliver according to the needs. The Rahman interlude (in voice)
adds a special mystique appeal to the number. A honey-dipped flower. That is
this song for you.
The Boss: Blaaze, Naresh Iyer, Raqueeb Alam
   Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar, Blaaze
Probably the theme number. Or a kind of leitmotif in the movie. The song has
its limitations as it is perhaps situational. The lyrics too are puerile as the
words are forced and stretch for effect. The rap bit is on expected lines.
Naresh Iyer dulcet voice manages to leave a mark even in this small piece.
Sahara: Vijay Yesudas, Gomathi Sree Chorus
  Lyrics: Vairamuthu
This seems to be a modulated version of the Sahana song. But what a beauty it
is. Rahman’s mastery is all pervading. He has fused a variety of ideas into
this one number and his unquestionable brilliance with soft instruments show up
elegantly. The way he has got Gomathi Sree slip in that Thirupavai bit
underscores his virtuosity. And she also rises to the occasion quite
brilliantly. But the song-stealer is Vijay Yesudas. The young man shows that he
is well and truly on the way to filling the perch that once belonged to his
illustrious dad. Vijay is very soothing and pleasing in this number. When he
and a tiny flute join forces, you could almost feel heaven A fitting finale to
a rocking album.

[arr] A R Rahman pleases his fans

2007-04-05 Thread Mohd Nash
The most-awaited album of the year Shivaji was released in Kerala last week.
In the film Sivaji -- The Boss which has the biggest Tamil cinema stalwarts
lined up under highly reputed AVM banner -- director Shankar, lyricists Valee,
Vairamuthu, Pa Vijay, Muthukumar, superstar Rajinikanth in the title role, the
composer A R Rahman has lived up to his name has delivered half a dozen songs
which will be chart toppers for the season.
A R Rahman's compositions fly ahead of the trends, as usual by a trend
setter, but the lyricists have milked Rajnikanth's screen image to the fullest
painting a larger than life picture of the hero comparing him to the sun, moon
and even Shiva the destroyer with lines like 'he can even turn Tamil Nadu into
Americas.'
Thousands of albums were sold from each major outlet in the first couple of
days in the state and this is good news especially when concerns were expressed
about the lean phases of music industry.

[arr] Record created by 'Sivaji' audio sales

2007-04-05 Thread Mohd Nash
'Sivaji' is set to create many a record. In just one day after the audio got
released, the sales was enormous.
The audio sales is located in Chennai's Ritchie Street. To buy the cassettes
and CDs, dealers and fans from out of town thronged into the street the earlier
night itself. The morning saw a densely crowded street. The cassettes and CDs
brought in vans were sold out as soon as they were loaded off. Small shops also
did great sales.

Milk abhishekham and aarathi for Rajini photos by fans, gave a festive
atmosphere. Since 3 songs were already available on the Internet, the fact that
the audio sales was such a sell out is a feat indeed. AVM had sent 2 lakhs each
of cassettes and CDs and by afternoon, all were sold out.

Such a response to audio sales has hitherto not been seen. In 'Sivaji,'
there are 2 songs the fans can dance to and 2 songs for them to sing along and
enjoy. Oru koodai sunlight, oru koodai moonlight... and Sachin adichaa sixer
thaandaa, Sivaji adichaa puncture thaandaa.. will make one want to dance.
Hummable tunes are Sahara pookkalum... and 'Vaaji vaaji vaaji en jeevan nee
Sivaji.
The 'Sivaji' songs were broadcast on all FM stations the night before audio
release. A Rajini fan says this is a 'small' welcome for the film that is to be
released soon.

Then imagine what it would be like the day 'Sivaji' gets released. It is
mind boggling!

2007-01-25 Thread Mohd Nash
1. Venmeghame
  Album : Guru

Singer(s) : Shreya Ghoshal, Uday Mazumdar

Music director : A.R.Rahman

The king is at the top spot. If he is not tuning songs for original Tamil
movies, even dubbed songs make it to the top. Melody that leaves one asking for
more. A song that stamps Rahman’s class

http://www.behindwoods.com/features/Topten/top10songs/tamil-cinema-topten-song-1.html
Hall of fame
Munbe vaa
Album : Sillunu Oru Kadhal

Singer(s) : Naresh Iyer, Shreya Ghosal

Music director : A.R.Rahman

The movie might not have done well; but who cares, the Madras Mozart had done
his magic. SOK has been on the charts ever since it released in early
September.
The song is soft and mellifluous, picturized romantically on Surya and
Bhumika. Shreya Ghoshal and Naresh Iyer have rendered the song rapturously.

[arr] Mani becomes the first Digital producer

2007-01-17 Thread Mohd Nash
Everyone is raving about how perfectly crafted a film Guru is. Maybe we are
losing sight of some very significant things in the dazzle of the movie. Of
course, the most important parts of the movie are the Mani touch, Abhishek’s
career best performance, Rahman’s music and world class cinematography by
Rajeev Menon.
But there are some other high points that the movie produced
jointly by Madras Talkies and Adlabs has achieved in the last few days
preceding its release.
Everyone knows that Guru was premiered in Canada, an achievement in
itself. But the one that we are talking about is even better. Guru was
premiered in the digital JPEG 2000 format; the current international norm,
ensuring enhanced sharpness and clarity of images. Things do not stop with
that. Guru has become the first Indian film to be projected digitally within
India.
Guru has just managed to beat Salaam-E-Ishq at the post.
Salaam-E-Ishq too is all set to release digitally in many centers in hardly two
weeks time. But, as it now stands; the honors go to Guru. Clearly, there is
more to Guru than what meets the eye.

[arr] 'Lajjo' - Mani Ratnam's next film! music A.R.Rahman

2007-01-15 Thread Mohd Nash
People are waiting in line for Amitabh to give them their call sheet. So many
want him to endorse their products in their ads. The busy Amitabh has found
time to compere for the audio release of Mani Ratnam's film. What Even though
Mani Ratnam says it is belief and friendship, it must be largely because of
Mani Ratnam's calibre as a filmmaker. Most of India's prominent stars would
give their right arm to act in his film.

Top star Aamir Khan is to act in Mani Ratnam's next film 'Lajjo' that stars
Kareena Kapoor as the heroine.
is the reason behind this surprising event?
The film has a desert background. Mani's circle says it's a musical. Once
can't go near a desert in April/May, so the shooting has to start after August
and end by Jan 2008. So, without taking too long a break, Mani Ratnam is
working hard on 'Lajjo' that will have music by AR Rehman.

He is shortly to direct a science fiction film too. He is also keen to make a
film on kids.

[arr] And, The Bollywood Screen award goes to…

2007-01-08 Thread Mohd Nash
The 13th Annual Screen awards were given away in
Mumbai on the 6th of January and the winners list gave many a reason to
celebrate. There were no surprises for the best part of the awards night, but
there were one or two awards that went contrary to expectations.

Best Movie:

No surprises. There were only two real contenders. Rang De Basanti and Lage
Raho Munna Bhai. Lage Raho Munna Bhai walked away with the honors.

Best Director:
If Munna Bhai got the best movie, then RDB was not to be left behind.
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra bagged the award.

Best Story:

Lage Raho Munna Bhai scores number two. Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijith Joshi
share the award.

Best Screenplay:

RDB comes back for its second. Rensil De’silva and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
share the award.

Best Actor:
The first award to go to someone not associated with RDB or Munna Bhai.
Hrithik Roshan gets the award for his performance in Kkrish.
Best Actress:

The first and the only big surprise, everyone expected Bipasha Basu to bag the
award for Corporate. But the jury seemed to think differently. Kareena Kapoor
won her first big award in a long time for Omkaara.

Best Actor in a supporting role:
This guy must be the most electrifying ‘Circuit’ the film industry has had in
a long time. Arshad Warsi, for playing the most lovable gangster in Lage Raho
Munna Bhai.

Best Actor in a negative role:

A cakewalk of sorts for Saif Ali Khan; he is winning everywhere this year, for
his performance in Omkaara.

Best Actress in a supporting role:

One award that many had not chanced predicting. Veteran Kirron Kher for playing
Aamir Khan’s mother in RDB.

Best Actor in a comic role:

A bit off a surprise; Shreyas Talpade winning his first big award for his role
in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Dor.

Best Background Music:

Well, no prizes for guessing. A.R.Rahman for Rang De Basanti.

It must have been really unfair for Sanjay Dutt to have to walk away empty
handed after his wonderful performance in Lage Raho Munna Bhai; he received a
Critic’s Special award. So did Ayesha Takia for her role in Dor.

Siddharth registered his presence with an award for the most
promising male newcomer. Kangana Ranaut was given the most promising female
newcomer for Gangster and Woh Lamhe.
The disappointments of the night: Aamir Khan left high and dry after a
wonderful 2006 and the Bacchhans totally absent from the awards list. Thus fell
the curtains on what has been Bollywood’s best year in this millennium.

[arr] Musical year this, in Kollywood

2007-01-03 Thread Mohd Nash

Music has always been an inevitable and indispensable part of
regional films in India. With talents and technology spree like never before,
Kollywood is now more self-contained than ever, with a bunch of refreshingly
new talents to watch out for. Well, a musical year it has indeed been, with an
upsurge of potent musicians, who possess talents so much so that they can be
called neighbour’s envy, Kollywood’s pride!
The year 2006 has been a surprise package. While Yuvan Shankar Raja, Srikanth
Deva and D Imman composed music for many films, veterans like A R Rahman and
Harris Jayaraj came up with just a couple of films this 2006.
While film music per se retained its usual magical charm with the viewers,
few songs climbed the hilt and emerged smash hits. Like for instance,
Valameenukum Vilangumeenukum from the film Chithiram Pesudhadi. Gana
Ulaganathan, who was hitherto an unfamiliar name despite having sung a number
in the film ‘Machi’ (the song Gummango Gummango) earlier, became a name to
reckon with, after this song which became an instant hit with kids and elders
alike. This film announced out loud the arrival of music director Sundar C
Babu, son of veteran Veena maestro Chittibabu, to Tamil filmdom.
The song Valameenukkum was a simple folksy number, with catchy lyrics and an
unsophisticated and yet, fine choreography by Shobi.
As regards the music director who composed for the maximum number of films,
it is Imman all the way. He scored the music for over half a dozen films, while
Srikanth Deva closely followed him.
Also the year saw Kamal Haasan's Dasavatharam going to floors with music by
Bollywood's Himesh Reshmaiayya. Also 2006 saw a craze among the music composers
to go for remix songs. Remix, it seems, is the in-thing today.
Devisri Prasad and Mani Sharma, both biggies in Tollywood, have been making
their presence felt in Kollywood too. While Devisri Prasad delivered smash hits
with songs like Un Parvaiyil and Kozhi Veda Kozhi in Unakkum Enakkum, Mani
Sharma signed one of the most awaited movies of the year, Pokiri. It should be
noted that Mani Sharma has already given hits to Vijay in the form of Aal
thotta bhoopathy and Mellinamae in Shahjahan.
Likewise, Srikanth Deva, the music director who knows only too well the pulse
of mass audiences, bagged another much expected film, Aalwar.
Among the lyricists, the year undoubtedly belongs to Na Muthukumar. He not
only received an honorary doctorate this year but also penned the lyrics for
the maximum number of songs.
There also emerged a fresh bunch of talents in the form of youngsters and
this includes Dharan of Parijatham fame and GV Prakash of Veyyil fame. Both the
music directors have given smash hits each, the former with Unnai Kandenae and
the latter, with Uruguthae maruguthae. Nephew of AR Rahman, Prakash’s work in
Veyyil has opened new doors of fame for him.
Let's check out the top ten songs this year, in terms of how well they were
received:
  1. Valamennukum (Gana Ulaganathan) --- Chithiram Pesuthadi
  2. Anbae Vaa Munbae Vaa (A R Rahman) – Sillunu Oru Kathal
  3. Partha Muthal Nalae (Harris Jayaraj) -- Vettaiyadu Vilayadu
  4. Loosu Pennae (Yuvanshankar Raja ) ---Vallavan
   5. Unnai Kandenae (Dharan) ---Parijatham
  6. Un parvaiyil (Devisri Prasad) - Unakkum Enakkum Something Something
  7. Uruguthae maruguthae (GV Prakash) ---Veyyil
  8. Dhinam dhinam Deepavali (AR Rahman) -Varalaru
  9. Karuva paiya (Pravin Mani) Thoothukudi
  10. Adi vaa (Sabesh Murali) Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi

[arr] “Lajjo, will take me into a totally differ ent territory”

2006-12-25 Thread Mohd Nash
A.R.Rahman has been a busy man ever since he scored
music for Mani Ratnam’s Roja in 1992. But 2006 has been special in many ways.
The year started off with the chartbuster Rang de Basanti and is ending on a
high with Guru. The difference in the styles and sounds that have been used in
both the movies is testimony to Rahman’s class.

Come 2007 and this ace composer has much more to offer to all music
lovers. He is currently working on Jodha Akbar, a period film being directed by
Ashuthosh Gowarikar. The Gowariker-Rahman combination has proved to be quite a
hit in their previous two films, Lagaan and Swades. Then comes Sivaji- The
Boss; Rahman is excited about scoring music for the Superstar once again, this
is also the reunion of the Sankar-Rahman duo after Boys.

Rahman also has two albums ready for release. One is based on Hindustani
classical music and has been performed by Ghulam Mustafa Khan and students. The
other one is more like pop music. Then there is Lajjo, where Rahman teams up
with Mani Ratnam again. Rahman is sure that this movie will take him to a
different level; only he knows what is in store for our ears.

Then there are the Oscar nominations of Water and Rang de Basanti to look
forward to. It looks like 2007 is going to be bigger than 2006 for the musical
wizard.

[arr] Kollywood’s ten most powerful men

2006-12-20 Thread Mohd Nash
A.R.Rahman
It is unusual for musicians to figure in such a
list. But, the quality of Rahman’s music is such that he can raise the
expectations of a movie and play a pivotal role in its opening. Big time
producers and directors wait for his dates. When he composes, everyone falls in
line. When he summons directors to his studio at midnight, they oblige. When he
wants the music rights, he gets them.

.When he is fasting for Ramzan, directors wait. Those who work with him
once, seldom go to others. His magic holds sway.

[arr] Soundarya Rajinikanth's 'Hara' - Rahman emphasize on music rights.[pic]

2006-12-13 Thread Mohd Nash
Looks like Rahman is on a campaign to emphasize that
music rights be granted to the musicians themselves. If you might remember, the
ace musician walked out of Shahrukh’s home production when the producers failed
to arrive at an agreement regarding the music rights of the movie. Rahman
wanted the rights of the songs and scores of the movie.

Recently, Rahman has agreed to score music for the animated movie
‘Hara’, which is produced by Soundarya – Rajini’s younger daughter. I have
obtained rights of my music for Hara. It is indispensable that every music
director gets hold of the music rights, stated Rahman. I have been emphasizing
this for quite sometime, he added.

Rahman is not happy that Bollywoodies have shown a deaf ear to his royalty
request. Not many in the Bollywood understand this concept, reiterated Rahman.
I consider these rights over everything I gain in my life, declared Rahman.

[arr] Mani waited for Rahman's fast [pic]

2006-12-08 Thread Mohd Nash
The song that is rocking the charts right now, Tere
Bina from Guru in Rahman’s voice does have a history behind its success. Rahman
– in a recent interview revealed that the song was sung by Qadir Khan. As
reported by us earlier, the song in the album was dedicated to music maestro
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The soulful song, which was, originally of 25 minutes in
the voice of Nusrat was cut short into less than 5 minutes for inclusion in
Guru.

Qadir Khan recreated the voice of Nusrat in the song, which was
recorded for Guru originally. On the other hand Maniratnam had another wish –
in other words, command. Mani insisted Rahman to voice Tere Bina, which was
immediately turned down by Rahman stating that he would insult Qadir Khan since
Qadir has done an excellent job himself in that song. Besides, Rahman was
fasting during Ramadan period and doubted that he had enough energy to sing the
high pitch number.

However, Mani remained undaunted on all those hurdles and did not take no for
an answer. Finally, Rahman gave in and rendered his voice for Tere Bina. The
song also has Murtaza and Qadir Khan’s voices in the midst. Tamil singer
Chinmayi is a part of Tere Bina too.

[arr] Namitha with Vijay in Azhagiya Thamizh Magan

2006-11-29 Thread Mohd Nash

Namitha's desire to act opposite Vijay is now fulfilled. The
buxom actress will act opposite Vijay in Azhagiya Thamizh Magan.
The movie to be produced by Swarga Chitra Films Appachan would have Vijay and
Shreya in the lead roles. Namitha would play the second fiddle in the movie.
It may be recalled that Namitha had expressed her desire to act with Vijay in
a few interviews before.
Her dream will be fulfilled in the coming months when Azhagiya Thamizh Magan
would go to floors.
A major highlight of the movie is the musical score by A R Rahman.
Namitha, who made a name for herself doing glamour roles, is expected to do a
similar role in Azhagiya Thamizh Magan.
Also, she has been signed to act in a Malayalam movie.
