2010-05-29 Thread Sam
It is very good song.. unfortunately, I can't stand the thematic lines rendered
by the females in both Hindi and Tamil versions.. It sounds terribly squeaky
and annoying.. I edited and replaced it with the male voice and now the song
is looping in my pod non-stop over the weekend.

Something about this song is very captivating...may take a while to grow, but
once it holds you, you keep wanting to hear it again and again! I'm addicted to
this song..the melody is actually quite simple and traditional, but has a
hook and intensity that is very direct and gripping. It's the thickly layered
soundscapes which surround the skeletal melody and brilliant vocals of Rekha
and Javed along with the whole ambiance of the song that is so very magical to
me..blends of middle eastern, folk, techno, trance...just brillianthas
a bit of a primal feel to it too with that mosquito drone sound coming in and
out now and then with the use of Rekha's voice electronically processed

The best decription in a review that I came across about this song was from
Apunkachoice.com's review of Raavan. About Ranjha Ranjha...

"There is something inexplicable about the track Ranjha Ranjha belted out
efficiently by Rekha Bhradwaj and Javed Ali. As the song settles in your heart,
you are drenched in the richness of Rahman's music. Now that is indescribable".

No mate.. definitely did not pay for this one.. but did pay for his other
concerts..

Many of my friends / colleagues who attended / saw this concert (as well as his
previous ones) felt AR and other singers blew it at times.. not the entire song
though..just a wee bit.. but that's enough for us to notice the difference..
especially I dare say that we hear his songs more times than himself.

If I recall correctly, AR apologized to the audience when Noor-un-ala-noor (by
Qadir / Murtaza) went totally off track in Singapore concert.. (and that was so
nice of him..)

I guess we have come a long way now.. concerts are getting much better with the
presentation / performance.. I certainly wouldn't miss a chance to attend his
next one if it is in the vicinity.. and even more certainly carry a much bigger
expectation (as we always do for his next album)

Are you taking your anger out here because some one conned you into paying for
a free concert? Jokes apart, Sam, that's hitting below the belt, can't let that

I think "Rahman Offkey " is certainly a loose statement and not worth to
respond, but since ARR is my Guru, I am doing so,

The songs sung by ARR are those also composed by him so he has every right to
perform them in whatever way / remix them / change the tone in any way he
wants. Audience comes to see him performing and not to check if all his tones
are true to the CD. And let ARR decide how he wants to sing his own songs.

If ARR wanted to add any additional lyrics / miss out on some / change the tone

so.

So please refrain from making such statements which none of us are qualified to

Have you seen any of MJ's concert live or video? Even with all the
dancing, jumping and walking - singing is never compromised.

It is not hard work but results that matter..

I can understand if it slips once in a while.. but this is happening far too
frequent for AR in his concerts..  I have attended four of his concerts and
yes, I can see improvements in recent concerts... but again can't help feeling
let down when the singers mess up..

I simply dont get it. What kind of a perfection do you guys want in a concert?
And why do you want it? If you want them to sing live, jump around, walk
around, and also be perfect in their singing arent we asking for too much here ?
If you want accuracy in their singing, the score , the modulations and
variations please sit at home and listen to the recorded tracks !

Problem is what you guys want. Anyone realise how much AR rehearses before
concert ? Forget about the hours of rehearsing at his studio, he rehearses the
whole fricken night before the concert. about 10 hours.

You guys need to also understand how ARs compositions are. They are usually
mixed easily at the studio with the singer not having to work too hard, cuz
there are multiple recordings that happen. They are very difficult to sing
live.

Inspite of all of this they do a decent job. And they are improving after every
concert.

Agreed its good to be honest. But please also see how much hardwork goes into
it.

My personal reaction is quite similar to what Jahanzeb stated. I thought Mausam
& Escape was terrific and perhaps the best part of the concert! I also liked a
lot of the stripped-down/ simple versions like Udhaya/Tu Hi Re. ARR was good in
Khwaja but it looked like he was out of breath in the other songs and I didn't
like them as much. I'm not saying they were bad. It's just the nature of a lot
of ARR songs being heavily produced with layers and effects that don't
translate too well for me in a concert setting (a lot of the unplugged versions
are exceptions though). For this same reason I haven't been keen on attending
any of his concerts but it's very satisfying to see the production qualities
continually improve. The stage, setting and display of artist names for the
Sydney concert was very nicely done. Of course, all this is based on seeing the
videos on Youtube and I do understand how the real experience is much better
(but there's an upper-bound
 that's apparent too).

Nothing wrong with posting a opinion.

Do you want this group to be a bunch of YES MEN praising everything or do you
want this group to be both critical and appreciative of our boss's output?

Jahanzeb was not very harsh in his tone. He said good things about the concert
too. Try to be objective and see if there is any validity in this argument.
Check out the songs again and if you still things ALL songs had top notch
singing then we have a issue.:-)
I do realize live singing is extremely difficult and challenging but AR now has
a reputation of a World Class performer and he needs to maintain the high
standards he set for himself all the time. Price of success and acclaim if you
ask me :-) :-)

And good things can always come out of criticism. I salute the guys who had the
courage to point out the "belmishes" in Blue. Thanks to them we are now
enjoying the cleaner sound in VTV. I am sure AR will always ensure clean and
crsip sound in his forthcoming albums.

Thanks Jahanzeb for having the courage to stand up and speak out. We need more
guys who can voice healthy ctiticism.

P.S 1. For all those guys posting irrelavant you tube links trying to prove
Aromale was a lift...

If Aromale was copied from Pink Floyd/Other 70s Rock artists then all his
quawwalis were copied from old hindi quawallis and all his dance numbers are
inspired from countless techno songs.

Just becoz two songs are in the same genre does not make the copied/inspired

From: ichord

Subject: [arr] VTV and the Meaning of Artistic Liberty

Artistic unconventionality may haave a price in terms of difficult common
accessability and initial resistance, but the upside is to value a long term
tradition of artistic liberty, heavily influenced and in some ways born out of
the Rennaissance period of world history.

What is artistic liberty? It's a type of freedom of expression.. of thoughts,
ideas, concepts, emotions unbounded by dogma, static rules, and artificial
boundaries, both within and without the individual expressing such a freedom.
It's a gift of nature, an affirmation of our humanity, and a vehicle of
creative expression that serves to communicate the deepest part of ourselves
and to help interpret our world aesthetically through an unknown, undiscovered
canvas of free ideas and concepts that are "out there", and yet "within us" at
the same time.

Music as an artform is a medium of this expression among a spectral array of
various nonverbal communication forms, yet, to me, embodies a holistic
attribute more than other art forms that helpes to synthesize the senses and
the spirit. The power of focused sound, positively intended vibrations on the
molecular level indeed serve many positive purposes through its recreative
invention and various sonic avatars. It it we, the receivers, interpreters, and
listeners, through the magic of our neural makeup, who are divinely gifted and
bestowed the ability to create, invent, and magnify from this aural sea of
sound consciousness that embodies our very existence from conception to death.

When I listen to a contextually unconventional music album like VTV, the
concept of artistic liberty superimposed on the idea of musical freedom
immediately strikes me as a divine gift, that only very few in this world are
able to communicate so movingly and convincingly. No doubt, Rahman's music has
always been about unbounded freedom from the confines of sound limitation and
conventional rules, aided by a myriad of technological tools. It is to the
fortune of Rahman that he arrived at musical time when his own creative
intentions met technological upswelling at a very important crossroad in a
momentous part of musical history. Yes, it was written, and yes, it was
intended.

I celebrate VTV not only because it pleases me aesthetically and challenges my
intellect, stimulating both left and right hemispheres into a holistic
phenomenon, but also for what it represents; another fulcrum of artistic
liberty and musical freedom from a man, one of the greatest musicians ever,
whose creative intentions are only pure and loving.

The larger picture, the unbridled privilge of being a witness and recepient to
this special expression calls out loud and clear to me and I am listening...
listening. ...listening .

“Annadurai (the first DMK Chief Minister) believed that science and technology
should always be used for the benefit of the downtrodden. These awards are
being given by Anna University in respect for this idea,” Mr. Jawahar said.

The doctorates would be awarded at a special convocation at the university in
the last week of March, the Vice-Chancellor said. The date would be announced

Not sure what he means by this..

He is good, but he is not the best according to me nor has he done anything
very different. Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Jatin Lalit are also good. Pritam is good
too. I don’t think he’s outstanding.

Pritam is as good as Rahman?

Iam very happy that Rahman has got the Oscar, that a good artiste got it.

If Rahman would have got it for Lagaan I’d have been happier.

That he came from the south to the north is not new either Iliaraja did it
before him. I like his music but I am very blunt.

Shankar Jaikishen is Shankar Jaikishen no one can touch them.

Like that, there are others who each have their own standing. But I am happy

TOP 10 ALBUMS THAT BUILT BRAND ‘RAHMAN’

Trying to pick Rahman’s best albums is not easy, because whatever he does is so
good. Selecting a few good ones as his best is something like ‘searching for a
needle in a stack of needles’, to borrow a line from Saving Private Ryan.
Initially, the intention was to make a list of Rahman’s top 10, but it ended up
in 15 and could well have gone up to 25 had it not been for some ruthless
decisions, which could be taken only by one with a strong heart. So, here are
the top 15 albums, not necessarily his best musical scores, but landmark albums
that have helped build ‘brand Rahman’ into the global phenomenon that he is
now.

Sivaji: The Boss :15

We all thought that Shankar would work only with Rahman until Anniyan happened
and everyone thought that a change in order was imminent. But, Sivaji happened
and the famous duo was back together. Superstar in his element called for some
rollicking stuff that would reverberate in theaters. Rahman understood the
requirements and delivered a score which one would not describe as classy but
instantly likeable and popular. An ‘Athiradee’ album, which set unseen records
in audio sales in the recent times.

Kizhakku Cheemayile :14

This was the first album that took Rahman’s music and popularity to the rural
parts of Tamil Nadu. Kizhakku Cheemayile remains his only real hit that was
extremely well received in the villages of the state. The movie’s success and
the expertise of Bharathiraja in handling rural themes did help a lot. This
again went on to prove the critics that Rahman is good at folk tunes too.

Rang De Basanti :13

Rang De Basanti was perfect music for the angry & restless generation next.
Some of the numbers really tugged at the patriotic strings in the heart, like
‘Khoon chala’. The anguish of bereavement was perfectly conveyed in ‘Lukka
chuppi’, the suppressed feelings of anger mixed with the relief of having
released it was personified in ‘Roobaroo’ while the Punjabi flavor in ‘Rang de
Basanti’ simply rocked, not to forget the liberating ‘I am a rebel’.

Muthu :12

This was Rahman’s first step outside Indian boundaries. Though many may not
consider Muthu as one of Rahman’s best albums, the movie did take his name and
music as far as Japan. The huge success of the movie in foreign shores gave
Rahman that vital exposure, which should have primed him for all that, was to
follow. ‘Thillana thillana’ is still one popular number among Rajini fans.

Minsara Kanavu :11

This was Rahman’s first chance to do a musical film. He did not let the chance
slip by, showing us his full repertoire of musical skills. The songs became
boundlessly popular overnight; the National Award was a natural and obvious
result. The uninhibited ‘Ooh la la la’, the lilting ‘Vennilave’ and the
sensuous ‘Thanga thaamarai magale’ are proof enough of his versatility.

Boys :10

Contrary to his amazing consistency, Rahman had been going through a bit of a
low phase for a while (only by his own high standards). Boys marked his return
to peak form. The music instantly became a youth anthem. There was a time when
one couldn’t switch channels for 5 minutes without coming across ‘Sa Re Ga Me’
or ‘Maaro Maaro’. The album had tremendous energy and vibrancy about it, the
main reason for the youth loving it no end.

Gentleman :9

This was the start of Rahman’s long and fruitful association with Shankar. The
album was the definition of the word ‘popular’. The film was a huge hit and the
songs were omnipresent. ‘Chikku bukku’ was a craze, so was ‘ottakathai
kattikko’. ‘En veetu thottathil’ and ‘Usilampatti’ were equally popular. Few
other albums have enjoyed such overwhelming popularity.

Alaipayuthey :8

This was romance, getting the right feeling was the most important thing here
and Rahman was bang on target. He made songs that became youth anthems of love.
If one says that the music was the single most important factor in the film’s
success; that is not far off the mark. When Alai Paayuthe released, love was in
the air everywhere. ‘Pachai nirame’, ‘kadhal sadugudu’, ‘snehithane’ evoked
emotions that are yet to be replicated by any other composition. Also, the
stylish ‘endrendrum punnagai’ was the best entry into films that Madhavan could
have asked for.

Kadhalan :7

This put Rahman on the throne of Tamil cinema music, the cassette sales of
Kadhalan created an all time record. It was as if the trend of buying original
audio was being revived by a single album. Kadhalan had everything in it, the

Ajmer becomes second home for Rahman Ajmer: The city of world fame Khawaj Garib
Nawaj Chisti is now the second home for Oscar winner A R Rahman.
Rahman has purchased a bungalow in a satellite area of Kundan Nagar last
November in the name of his mother. Some people of Kundan Nagar had even spoken
to Rahman and his sister on their last visit but they did not know who they
were.
But after Rahman’s Oscar triumph now people of the area are happy that
their neighbour is an international figure.
“Rahman had come here five months back with two ladies and it was then that
we came to know that that he had purchased this bungalow. The bungalow is on
the name of his mother, Kareema Begum,” said CD Joshi who will become Rahman’s
immediate. He said, “Rahman along with her mother and sister came here and
stayed for long two days. They were busy seeing Ajmer and the house.”
“The lady spoke to me for minutes and it was then that we came to know that
some south Indian had come to live here. She was soft spoken and religious that
we never expected that she could be the sister of Rahman,” said 60-year-old
Sunita Goyal, a resident of Kundan Nagar.
The 16 number bungalow — purchased by Rahman — is triple storied with a big
porch and a garden and is situated in the posh area of Kundan Nagar. The house
is surrounded by a 10-feet wall and with a big iron gate.
“People living in this locality are those who want peace and remain to
themselves. Therefore it is often the case that people do not know who is
living three doors away from them,” said Laxmi Devi, who runs a laundry in the
area. The area is just five kilometres away from the Dargah.
According to administration sources, registry of the bungalow was done in
November in the name of Kareema Begum.
“Rahman frequently visits Ajmer for visiting the Dargah of Kwaja Garib
Nawaj. But on his visits he prefers keeping his identity hidden and therefore
having a house here best suits his choice,” said Pyare Mohan Tripathi, the
district public relation officer.

I don't think he sings in this song.. This album was released in December..

In an interview in Jan (after GG), AR had mention that Akon wanted him to "act"
in a Music Video, besides writing /composing a song..

Hip-hop artiste Akon wants me to write something for him and do a music video

CHENNAI: For a moment on Monday morning, things stood still in India. The
silence was deeper in Chennai during the seconds it took for the announcement
to be read out:
A.R.Rahman. As Chennai’s own genius walked the polished floor at Kodak Theatre
to get his own little statuette, it is possible the southern city cheered the
loudest.

The encomium kept pouring in ever since. Many feted not only his talent for
music but also his humility and simplicity.

S. P. Balasubramaniam, whose rendering of Rahman’s ‘Thanga Thamarai Magale’ in
Minsara Kanavu won him a National Award says: “Rahman is a great composer and a
greater human being. I think seniors and juniors have a lot to learn from him,
from his humility. Even after the Oscars, he will be the same. He is a genius!”
For yesteryear composer M.S.Viswanathan who has sung one number for him,
“Rahman is not only exceptionally talented but also a very good person.”

“Special victory”

Kamal Hassan called it a special victory and joked that they had given him two
Oscars, so it would be easier for him to balance the statuettes.

Rahman’s favourite playback singer P. Suseela reciprocates the admiration he
has for her. “Honouring the great musician, who is an Indian, on such a global
platform is rather special. Like a double century, he has bagged two awards.”

Pitching in with the patriotic angle, cinematographer P.C .Sreeram says: “Every
Indian has to be proud of Rahman and his team.” He feels there is a bond
between sound and light that can’t be explained in words. “Certain songs make
you react in a particular way. Yes, I think some of my best expressions in
light have come with his music.”

And then there was Tamil pride to the fore as well, with actor Prabhu and
lyricist
Vairamuthu congratulating him on speaking in Tamil at the Awards ceremony—“Ella
Pughazhum Iraivanukke.” Vairamuthu says: “I am doubly happy that a Tamilian has
won India such an honour. I had written ‘Ennai inda boomi sutri vasa aasai… (I
want the world to go around me)’ in the Roja song ‘Chinna china aasai.’ Now, I
am elated that the world has begun going around him now!”

Rahman’s sound engineer S. Sivakumar says the composer would lose track of time
while at work. Senthil Kumar, director, Real Image, points out, “Rahman
pioneered the use of synthesisers, sequences and multi-tracks. He is one of the
best keyboard players.”

Actor Suriya, whose on-screen romancing has often been embellished by music
from Rahman, reveals how it also played a role in his off-screen romance with
Jyothika.
“Apparently he had stopped singing love songs, but we were surprised when
Rahman sir volunteered to sing the stirring ‘New York Nagaram’ from Sillunu Oru
Kadhal. Since it was just before our wedding, it was like a great wedding gift
for us,” Suriya says.

Actor Madhavan’s career-launching film, Alaipayuthe sizzled the screens and not
in any small measure due to Rahman’s score. He has since gone on to do five
more movies with Rahman. Maddy says, “I think we missed giving him one more
Oscar—to the nicest person in the industry.”

Gopal Srinivasan of the A.R.Rahman Fan Club is one of an ecstatic world-wide

for the fantastic body of work Rahman has produced, instead of applause for
just one song or one movie.

Rapper Blaaze who worked on Slumdog Millionaire, was mentioned by Rahman in his
speech at Kodak Theatre. He says he is rendered speechless by Rahman’s
kindness. “His message after the ‘Jai Ho’ song when he said, ‘All my life I had
choices, love and hate, I chose love—and here I am…’ is the message for the
world right now. It is a historic moment for over a billion hearts…”

[arr] Rahman is special: Maniratnam

2009-02-23 Thread Sam
Chennai (PTI): Noted filmmaker Maniratnam, who introduced A R Rahman to the
film industry through 'Roja', on Monday said he was proud of the music maestro,
whose work has been recognised "internationally" after the double Oscar win.
"He is special. Thats all. It doesn't matter which award he gets. All that
matters is that his work had been recognised internationally," Maniratnam said.
"We all should be proud of it and I am especially very proud of him," the noted
director said when asked for his reaction.
Maniratnam approached Rahman to score music for his 'Roja' in 1991 after seeing
him performing at an awards ceremony in Chennai. Since Roja, Rahman has scored
music for all the movies directed by Maniratnam and they almost became
indispensable for each other.
"I think every victory is good and 'Slumdog' is a brilliant film and hopefully,
very soon, an Indian film will make it at the Oscars," Maniratnam said. Asked
whether he was in the race for Oscars, he said: "No".
Thiruda Thiruda, Bombay, Uyire (Dil Se in Hindi), Alaipayuthae (Saathiya),
Kannathil Muthamittal, Guru and Aayutha Ezhuthu were some of the super hit
movies in which the duo worked.

because James Howard (Defiance) actually has the lowest chances of win

A. R. Rahman knows how big a deal it would be if he wins an Oscar on Sunday.

Monica Almeida/The New York Times
A. R. Rahman, in his natural habitat at the computer, works on five or six
films a year, juggling several at a time. He is a kind of national hero in
India.
One of the most prolific and successful film composers in India, he has three
nominations, all for "Slumdog Millionaire" : best original score and best
original song, for both "Jai Ho" and "O ... Saya," a collaboration with the Sri
Lankan-British rapper M.I.A. (The film, by Danny Boyle, has 10 nominations, and
last month Mr. Rahman won a Golden Globe for best score.)
"It would be a great honor," Mr. Rahman said with characteristic diffidence in
a phone interview this week from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to perform
at the ceremony. "It would help me to do bigger things."
Ask him what those bigger things might be, however, and he grows even quieter.
Naming some Western directors he would like to work with, he sounds distracted,
almost bored, as if the future is just too abstract to worry about.
"Baz Luhrmann," he said. A beat, then: "Ridley Scott. I'm a big fan of Ridley."
But when it comes to his music Mr. Rahman, who is 43 but with his cherubic
cheeks could pass for less than 30, turns surprisingly chatty. His work has
been in more than 100 films since 1992, and after scoring Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Bollywood-themed stage musical "Bombay Dreams" in 2002 he enjoyed had a
steadily growing profile in the West. One of the first major composers in India
to embrace digital technology, he is in his natural habitat at the computer,
and he maintains the manic, multitasking rhythm of a true 21st-century techie.
"I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while doing
something unrelated," he said. "You just grasp a film and start working, and
something unpredictable comes out from a third element. The mind, the more
active it is, the more productive it is."
Productivity, along with a gift for golden melody and a cosmopolitan touch that
reflects the new, globally conscious India, have given Mr. Rahman, who lives
and works in Chennai (the city formerly known as Madras), a kind of
national-hero status. "Rah Rah Rahman," The Times of India proclaimed on its
front page after the Oscar nominations were announced.
"He has a rapper from Tanzania working with him," Mr. Boyle said, "and
fulfilled a mutual desire to work with M.I.A., part Sri Lankan, part London,
part New York. Add the house-music disco beats sweeping Bollywood dance lately
and you have a real moment of fusion."
Mr. Rahman works on five or six films a year, juggling several at a time in
various stages of completion. While unheard of in Hollywood, that pace is
common in India, and Mr. Rahman has made his share of modern classics, like
"Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India" (2001), beloved by Indian and Western
critics alike, and "Dil Se" (1998).
"Slumdog," Mr. Rahman said, was created in relatively luxurious circumstances:
"I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and did the whole score there."
Even by the musical-sponge standards of Indian film, Mr. Rahman has been an
especially curious fusionist. The son of a film composer, R. K. Shekhar, he
grew up with a record collection that included Indian music and rock; two
favorites were the American country singer Jim Reeves and Walter Carlos's
landmark electronic album "Switched-On Bach." (Born A. S. Dileep Kumar, he
changed his name to Allah Rakkha Rahman when he converted to Sufi Islam in his
early 20s.)
Mr. Rahman was playing professional sessions by age 11 and soon had a rock
band. He received a scholarship to the Trinity College of Music in London, and
upon his return to India began composing commercial jingles. His first film was
"Roja," and his sophisticated approach quickly revolutionized Indian film
music, said David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the
Humanities at Columbia University.
"He's sort of the Peter Gabriel of the Indian film industry," Mr. Novak said.
"He sh

Yes Ghajini is Releasing.
Dec,24,2008

Ghajini is finally releasing as per schedule on 25th Dec, and some theatres are
having paid previews this evening.

The last 24 hours have been most traumatic. In fact yesterday I had written a
post which I was just about to uplink when I heard about the problem, and then
I didn't post it. Am putting it below. Am emotionally totally drained. Just
going to wait for your response now.

_

Prenatal Depression.

Just before any of my films release I go into pendulum mode. One sec I feel
very optimistic about the film and the next I’m sure no one’s going to like it.
I lose my smile my appetite, my sleep. On the whole I am listless and walk
around like a zombie. VVC (Vidhu Vinod Chopra), who was talking to me
yesterday, accurately described it as Prenatal Depression. The film is about to
be delivered and will be out of our systems so to speak. Then it will have a
life of its own which we have absolutely no control over.

Sigh. It too tough, making films.

All the 2 years of planning, preparation, creative discussions, the struggle to
shoot the film and the sleepless nights of post production ultimately culminate
in a 3 hour experience in the darkness of a cinema hall.

This time around it is a remake of a Tamil film so I am especially anxious.
Ghajini was a huge success in the South and Surya had done an excellent job in
the original. I hope that I have been able to do justice to the film. Am
especially awaiting Surya’s response as he was the one who went out of his way
to convince me that I suit the role.

Am guilty of not being able to read the responses for my last post this time
around, as I have been just too busy. In fact the last couple weeks have been
too hectic and as a result of the exhaustion and excitement I’m down with fever
so am lying in bed as I write this.
While the film releases on the 25th all over I believe in some Cinemas it
actually opens for Paid Previews on the evening of 24th. So I will be eagerly
awaiting your response 24th evening onwards. Wont miss a single post.

At this time, irrespective of the fate of the film, I want to acknowledge and
introduce to you the various people who have worked behind the scenes on this
film. The presenter Arvind Garu, who has been a great support to the entire
team and has had complete faith in Murgadoss and his abilities. Also a man of
great wisdom and maturity. Both Tagore Madhu and Madhu Mantena who have worked
tirelessly to bring the film onto screen in the best possible way. Each with
their individual strengths have been the best producers that this film could
have ever asked for or got. Ravi K Chandran who has taken the film to another
level with his visual excellence. Rasul who has impressed me the most with his
amazing sound design. He has been among the most committed technicians I have
ever worked with. The kind of detail and layering I have seen him get into is
truly heartwarming, and the pains he has taken to satisfy the director are
inspiring for any film person.
Anthony who has truly astounded me with his editing abilities and has been a
learning experience to work with. Peter Hines who has shocked me with his mad
energy and acute understanding of the character and situation when he is
composing for action. Stunt Shiva, who stepped in when Peter was unable to be
with us because of the change in schedule because of my injury, worked with an
enthusiasm unseen in clash work. Sunil, who quietly and tirelessly went about
his work in Production Design to give the film the unique look that it
requires. Arjun and Avan who has never failed to satisfy me in my endeavor to
look the character. Rahul Nanda, who has managed to capture the pain and
romance of the film in one single image. Anup Dev, who has patiently and with a
lot of care given the final touches to the film. Piyush Misra, who handled the
tough job of adapting the dialogues into Hindi. Nabeel Abbas, whose advice into
the promotions and marketing of the film as
a consultant were extremely helpful. Shilpa and Prabhat, who are extremely
insightful and acute with their expertise in promotion have taken the film to
the heights that it deserves. Priti and Aman, whose marketing abilities have
given the film the scale and depth that it deserves. And lastly and most
importantly Murugadoss. To make a film is very difficult, to make a film which
connects with the audience is even more difficult, a

Re: [arr] Why no much talk abt Ghajini BGM

2008-12-29 Thread Sam
I have to agree with you on this. The BGM, though captivating, was loud in many
places. But I guess, it was intentional.

IMO, Illayaraja still tops when it comes to BGM.. Just listen to any of his
compositions in Mani's movies..

I feel ARR needs to work a little hard when it comes to giving background
scores for
thrillers. He is so good at other genres like when a scene is about
relations/patriotic etc.
But when it comes to darker ones or when glorifying a hero, it doesnt really
have to be loud.

This is where i feel he slips a little.

Take for example in Guru. When Gurukanth does something smart the Guru bhai
guru bahi aye che! is so loud, it deviates you from the movie.  Ditto is the
mottai rap in Sivaji ( its really okay cuz its for Rajini). Similarly when
Akbar gets angry in JA, the score is so loud. And now Ghajini. Thankfully a lot
is happening on screen and you dont worry much. Again check out the superb use
of flute for Jiah Khan when she is hunting for clues and stuff. He is so good
at that.

Watch Dark Knight, when the Joker talks. See how the music is in the background
and you will know what i mean.

:-) I am sure Pavan would still go to see it, even him he has to take a
dinner only of Combiflam. :-)

I had earlier said about JA that its personal music didn't go well with
the grandeur of the film.

I think Ghajini music and movie also were like that. Ghajini music was
soft whereas the movie was shouts, tempers, confusion, action, violence.
Still, contrary to JA where the grandeur of the film made the music sunk
without a trace, here in ghajini the contrast didn't harm the music at
all. Ghajini music still showed up as a major highlight of the film,
providing people the desired relief where they wanted it, from all those
hyper ultra emotions. And one can even discount bachhoo and lattu. So,
it would be just behka, guzarish and Kaise mujhe, only three song which
did such a wonder in the long (it came in 3 CDs) movie. Hail ARR.

--

Now, about the BGM being loud. Well, songs have a situation introduced
for them, but BGM has to fit the scene. And when scenes were about
madness, the BGM had to reflect the madness, and that is what it did.
and did it with so much of ARR's typical perfection that the madness got
multiplied.

So, it was technically impossible to put any other kind of BGM for this
film.

Guzarish's beats were played as BGM at the starting scene of Aamir+Asin,
but thankfully they delayed guzarish song to after interval where it
sounded more appropriate because Aamir had proposed to Asin by then and
had no reason to believe that Asin might decline, so he could express
his feelings in such a overt song, whereas had guzarish song been right
at the first meet, it would have been premature as Aamir was pulled
towards her but wasn't in love with her yet.

They have put a lot of thoughts in placement of songs for this movie
that other films/ directors don't exactly bother. Even the great Mani
slipped in Guru when he devised that flimsy situation just to put that
song (Tere bina???) when Aish's bro revealed to her that Abhishek
married her for money, so that there was a strain in their relationship
and then they sing that song and by the time song ended, their anger had
evaporated by magic. A rare shabby direction by Mani.

BGM was certainly good. There was rap piece when Aamir is chasing Jiah, which
was cool. I don't recall one in Tamil version

we the members of Rahman Bloods of coimbatore(RBC) watched the movie on the
release day.
our group members around 10 of them were there and the BGM is one of the plus
points in the mob\vie and ARR
has contributed well to this movie esp. the BEkha instrumental in Guitar when
aamir
proposes his love to asin after the party is a good example.

Kudos to ARRnna,Murugadoss and Aamir for given a good entertainer movie that
can be seen with family.

I havnt watched it yet. Freaking too much snow not letting me go
anywhere. Plus its not playing in our home town, driving 50+ km when u
feel like living in a cage (with snow around you everywhere) is
totally un-safe. Its first time when I missed first day show (usually
watch night show) of Rahman's movie in last 3 years, that too of such
hyped movie :(
Well.. might watch it next week.

About background score, someone did mention that there is Behka
instrumental version to look forward to..

Harris Jayaraj issued a press release stating that Vaaranam Aayiram is his last

I was also shocked especially when it came on the day before the release of our
film. Trust me, I too came to know about it when I got a similar mail from
Harris that had gone to the media. I think, we could have talked about it
instead of him going public. Maybe my decision to work with A R Rahman in my

"Different, yet Captivating"

That's exactly what I would say, if I were to define ARR's standard in one
sentence..

Through his journey from being "Musical Whiz Kid" to "Father of Modern
Bollywood Music", Rahman has captivated my heart, soul and mind countless
times, though not necessarily when I immediately hear the song..

There were times I had doubted whether he had lost his ability to reach up to
his own "standard".. but he has proven me wrong in the later releases..

If I were to rate his 2008 albums by his own standard,

"Different" factor rating scale: 1 to 5 (where 1 being "repetetive" and 5 being
"never-heard-this-before")
"Captivating" factor rating scale: 1 to 5 (where 1 being "boring" and 5 being
"out-of-the-world")

Jodhaa Akbar
In Lamhon Ke ("Different" = 5 + "Captivating" = 5)
Azeem-O-Shaan (4+3)

Mastam Mastam (4+3)
Zindagi (3+3)
Dil Ka Rishta (5+5)
Manmohini Morey (5+5)

Ghajini

Guzarish (3+4)
Aye Bacho (4+3)
Latoo (4+3)
Behkha (5+3)
Kaise Mujhe (3+4)

IMO, any song with a total rating of 7 or less does not live up to his
standards..

This post is less of a complaint and more out of curiosity What
exactly do you want in Rahman's music that you are not hearing in his
music today? Please be specific like in terms of instrumentation,
sound, melody, harmony, percussion, etc. I'm really curious to know,
because I hear this with each and every single Rahman release in the
past several years. The tone of many reviewers also is revealing, as
if they're thinking, "Rahman composed this song or this style of
music? HOW COULD HE? It's so beneath him! He can do better than
this! Not at all up to his standards!" Karthik's milliblog review of
Ghajini has the same exact tone, like "HOW COULD HE?" It's like if
ARR doesn't come up with a Jodha Akbar each time with semi classical
music, the soundtrack is not up to his standards, and some even said
that JA was not up to his standards!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to express it, fine. But,
I'm curious to know exactly what you are missing in Rahman's music
today. Take the albums he has released in 2008. If ARR is not living
up to his own standards in 2008, why? Please explain in detail!

Friends.. I'm not that great in the Sound Engineering and I've just started my
career.
Here I'm trying to explain what disappointed me when I heard 'In Lamhon ke'..
I know that there are many Sound Engineers and Audiophiles in Our Group..
Please forgive me, if there are mistakes considering the fact that I'm totally
a newbie.. :-)

Please find the attached file..
It is the screen shot of the Waves of the Song being played in Nuendo. This is
the original 'In Lamhon ke' track from the Audio CD.

At 01:31 the chorus part starts and note the wave signals hitting the peak
level. You can see the signals are ‘Flattened’ after hitting the peak. That
should not happen for a perfect mixed song and a signal should not touch the
peak level even if it’s a song with some heavy orchestration or a heavy chorus
part. That's what I learned.

Not only 'In Lamhon ke' but after 6:27 'Dil ka Rishta' is a pain for ears.. :-(
I've attached it's screen shot also..

The song is simply awesome.. Just no words ! but what to do... :-(

I'm very much sure that the Audio Companies had increased the overall Volume of
the Albums. Anyway this trend spoils some songs with heavy instrumentation like
In Lamhon ka, Dil Ka Rishta etc (and our ears too !).

For some songs we are not feeling the distortion caused by the waves hitting
the peak levels 'cuz we are used to it.

As Neetika Sis. said...

" ARR tracks are gems...should be taken extra care while handling ! "

Music companies should take care of this in future..

Hope Gopal and Vijay Bros. would tell about this issue to the concerned
people.. :-)
Let's hope for the Best !

Thanks.

Krish Bro,
I completely agree with you...This loudness is sometimes very irritating.
My fav song "In Lamhon ke daman mein (JA)"...when the chorus hits the peak, its
a torture to hear wid high volume..
I love dis song so much..but its a pain to decrease the volume everytime wen
the chorus part comes..
ARR is the one who introduced Quality sound to Indians...
I think its the fault of music companies :( :(
Whoever is responsile for this mistake should take care of this issue next
time.. as its a very serios problem arising from past few releases!!!

ARR tracks are gems...should be taken extra care while handling!!!

Subject: Re: [arr] Re: Tutu's Take- Indiafm Review of Yuvraaj

am I the only one disappointed by the increasing trend in recent ARR albums to
be loud?

No.. I'm also here..

All the songs of ARR's recent Albums are touching the Peak level in the Sound
Forge as well as Nuendo Softwares though it is not jarring or causing any
distortion. I was thinking about it when I heard the Sakkarakatti Songs in
Sound Forge. Thought it happened because AR's songs were missing H. Shridhar
Sir in the crew. But in Yuvvraaj he's credted and he has done the entire Mixing
and Mastering (with Sivakumar Sir). Still all the songs hit the Peak level. I
think this is bit a serious issue on a Sound Engineer's point of view. Because
AR's each and every song is like a reference book for a Sound Engineer.. I
learned and am learning a lot of things by analysing his old and latest mixes.
I think some kind of magic is missing in the mixes of some songs.
I said before that this is just a Sound Engineer's point of view. Apart from
these kind of some minute things , his songs are real real gems for the
audience. full satisfaction guaranteed ! I always believe that one could not
enjoy his songs if he keeps on looking and digging out such small small things.
But professionally we've to admit this.
Hope AR will take care of it in future and avoid touching the peak levels of
his songs. :-)

Thanks.

" He is composing music only for films with commercial interests. Why hasnt he

Hindi Version had a chorus in the first interlude that goes like "malli

Also, the "rangi rangi" (female chorus in the first and second stanza) in the

singer..

Vellai Pookal intro strumming is a preset in the Yamaha Motif

Re: [arr] indiaglitz review of JA.....

2008-01-28 Thread Sam
This is probably the 3rd or 4th review mentioning "In Lamhon Ke" as a weak
song. I don't understand.. This song starts with one of the finest melody till
date..

Though the chorus comes a little strong, the melody stands out tall.. I have
not been able to shake it of my head for more than a week now and I am sure it
is going to be permanently etched in my memory for a very long time..

[arr] Public Opinion vs Review

2008-01-21 Thread Sam
It's been a while where a reviewer's opinion was totally in contrast to general
public opinion (fans?) for an ARR album.. The 2 / 5 stars was a shocker.. The
last time I remember was for Yuva, when Subhash Jha called it souless..

Re: [arr]Indiafm review - Jodhaa Akbar disappoints, and how!

2008-01-21 Thread Sam
Gomzy, Do you really want to read this review? It is totally biased..

By Joginder Tuteja, January 21, 2008 - 12:07 IST

Now this one is supposed to be big. Really BIG! And why not? After all Jodhaa
Akbar has:

a) Ashutosh Gowarikar's labor of love finally getting ready to be unveiled
after going through grueling shooting schedules,
b) Hrithik and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan coming together again after Dhoom 2,
albeit in a different avatar,
c) A.R. Rahman and Javed Akhtar saab collaborating with Ashutosh for the third
straight time after Lagaan and Swades and
d) A true historical being brought to celluloid after ages.

No wonder, everything about this film is expected to be flawless and studied to
the minutest details. This is why one looks at the music with great
expectations. However, it all turns out to be anticipation in vain as Jodhaa
Akbar turns out to be the first major disappointment of 2008.

In the praise of Shahenshah Akbar comes the opening track 'Azeem-O-Shaan
Shahenshah'. High on orchestra, the track has ‘grand’ written all over it and
deserves an opulent treatment to it. Crooned by Mohammed Aslam, Bonnie
Chakraborty and Chorus, the track hails Akbar for creating an empire where
there is peace, harmony, and great life all around. The song doesn't belong to
the kind which could be sung around or played loud at home but would do well
when seen on the big screen, provided the picturisation is as lavish as
Rahman's efforts.

Javed Ali, who has been trying to make his mark over last 3-4 years, gets a big
break in the form of 'Jashn-E-Bahaaraa'. Sounding quite close to Sonu Nigam,
Javed does well in his rendition of this slow track that is in complete
contrast to 'Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah' in its treatment. Javed Akhtar saab's
poetry is in full flow for this love song which comes close to the style of
60’s in it's tune and flow.

However, one misses the kind of punch as expected from the first romantic song
of the album and the final outcome turns out to be little lackluster with not
much in the song pulling a listener for a repeat hearing. Towards the album's
end, a 'Flute Instrumental' version of the song is heard as well, which works
better as a core background piece which could be enjoyed with lights switched
off.

Kashif written 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' is a devotional track, which is strictly
for Rahman fans. Rendered by Rahman himself, it has the kind of arrangements as
heard in 'Kehna Hi Kya' [Bombay]. With minimal instruments in play, 'Khwaja
Mere Khwaja' has its strength lying in it's lyrics but that too has minimal
target audience due to the track's genre and setting. Overall, a situational
piece that seems like an unlikely candidate to make much headway into current
crop of audience. An 'Oboe Instrumental' piece for the same track comes at the
album's end and yet again has the kind of treatment, which hardly promises a
popular reach out.

'In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein' that comes later turns out to be most laidback of
all and just doesn't ignite the kind of spark that one had been hunting for in
this soundtrack so far. It's one thing to be slow and another to be just plain
and simple drag (if boring is too harsh a word here)! By this time, one
seriously starts wondering if Rahman was asked to work on the album
really-really hard or did he actually finish the job in a jiffy? In spite of
presence of Sonu Nigam and Madhushree, the song just doesn't click at all and
in the end what one gets to hear is a number which fails to impress and ends
without making any impression.

On the lines of 'O Paalan Haari' [Lagaan] (genre wise) comes 'Mann Mohanaa’,
which is yet, another devotional track after 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja'. This time
around, it is Bela Shinde's turn to sing a number for Lord Krishna as the
character of Jodha played by Aishwarya Rai turns over to God. Just like the
rest of the album, this one too doesn't go any further than being ordinary and
ends without creating any place in the heart (or the music collection) of the
listener.

Special attraction of the music album of Jodhaa Akbar is a bonus DVD that
includes a 4-minute long theatrical trailer of the film along with a few
posters, story and cast and crew details of the film

The album kicks off well with a high adrenalin title song but beyond that there
isn't much to look forward to. Jodhaa Akbar would work with a miniscule segment
of audience and that too only in certain big cities. It is expected to take a
good start at the stands due to high credentials involved but a sustained stay
at the charts may only be possible only if the film is a success.

Jodhaa Akbar disappoints, and how! Though the music of Lagaan was good
(catching on more after the film's success), Swades was always a few steps
behind. However, Jodhaa Akbar does not have much to cheer about and fails to go
an extra distance.

2 Stars

It's one of my favorites from the album. Surprised nobody has talked
much about it. The orhcestration and musical interludes are just mind
boggling. The melody is so classical.

I'll have lots more to say about JA soon.

[arr] In Lamhon Ke..

2008-01-18 Thread Sam
The song has a beautiful melodious start, mesmerizing portions when the singers
sing and classic pieces throough out ( esp 4:16 - 4:22).. The heavy chorus
interludes are a complete mis-fit, which takes the essence out of the song.

I am sure there was a need for some intense music in the film (during the
song)..but the audio could have done with out it..

Hi,
The first song retuned by arr was the old classic 'Kaalangalil aval

I think it featured actress shobana. Anyone remembers this ad?

Seriously..the animation is pathetic. Too many slow mo's.. Also, I am not sure
if ARR specifically composed for this trailer.. It sounds like that they have
used the bits composed by ARR and mixed them hurriedly..

The production team has a long way to go if they are planning to match

Subject: [arr] [Semi-ARR] Shankar signs on Rajnikanth for Robot : Rediff ???

http://www.rediff. com/movies/ 2008/jan/ 02robot.htm

The Boss of the Box-Office will soon be back. Months after Sivaji The
Boss set the cash registers ringing worldwide, Tamil superstar
Rajnikanth [Images] is teaming up with the out-of-the-box director
Shankar again.

If top industry sources are to be believed, Shankar will work with
Rajnikanth in Robot, which was planned to be shot with Shah Rukh Khan
in the lead and as producer. But the project apparently did not work
out owing to 'creative differences' , with Shah Rukh himself confirming
the separation. Later, it was reported that Shankar approached Aamir
Khan [Images] for the role.

Though the film's thread is not confirmed, the name 'Robot' and
widely-speculated media reports suggest the story is about a maverick
scientist who creates a robot and later runs into trouble with his pet
creation.

When the movie does hit the screen, Shankar, known for his expertise
in state-of-the- art film-making technique, could thrill filmgoers,
especially Rajnikanth fans wordwide. Film buffs and Rajnikanth fans
say if the duo team up again, it could be "explosive".

Sources say a top production house in Mumbai will produce the film, in
what could be the most expensive film ever made in India. If Sivaji
was shot for a whopping Rs 80 crore (Rs 800 million), the new film is
expected to cost more than Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion).

According to sources, Shankar has held discussions with the Mumbai
production house, which has shown a keen interest in the film with
Rajnikanth, the highest-paid actor in the country.

Interestingly, a search on 'Robot-Shanker- film' throws up many actors'
names as the heroes of this dream project -- the latest being Ajith of
Billa fame in the lead.

When official confirmation comes that Rajnikanth will star in the
Shankar film, remember you read it on rediff.com first!

For the first time year since 1995, ARR has not had a single music release,

Roja, which was his first Hindi release, was in 1993 and was followed by Humse

2007-11-27 Thread Sam
It is interesting you said this.. I was exactly thinking the same point last
week

I still remember the moment when I heard this song first time in my walkman. I
was caught completely off-guard and left totally mesmerized. I listened to this
song again and again the whole night (okay.. till 3 am) and the next day I was
late for my classes..

That magnasound cassette was worn out within one month and when the CD
released, I promptly bought a copy..

Even now the song stays so fresh.. Anupama's voice, roll of drums, haunting
harmony, strumming, unusual structure.. still I get goose bumps sometimes.

Hi guys,

It has been more than a decade after the release of Thiruda
Thiruda(1993) . But still the songs, sounds too fresh and noone till date in
indian film industry has done anything like that. Chandralekha song is one of
my fav of all times. Everytime i hear it i feel like hearing for the first
time. Too good song.

Rahman magic is never ending. I always remain in wonder how he is making these
kind of music.

[arr] Re: Shakalaka Baby - different ending??

2007-11-26 Thread Sam Sujith
Toofan ki raat intro is one kind of variation...put some reverb on the
fwd going phrase...reverse it...and put some reverb on the reverse
going phrseit usually has a very good suspended in ether, ghostly
feel to the sound. Interestingly, u can hear in Amith's clip...in the
second part...since the reverb was put on the reverse going phrase..u
can hear something like a pre-echo when that reverse phrse is reversed
again.

Another example i can think of is the intro giberish in Come On Come
on Kamakshi from love birds..the gibberish is the same phrase first
reversed with no claps and then played normally but with claps behind it.

Re: [arr] My ATM movie, BGM review

2007-11-12 Thread Sam
- Marilyn Monroe - Had the last few bits of humming missing
- Kelamal - Second interlude was shortned (parthum paramale pogum mehangale)
and also the last part where sriram sings "kokilam kokilam" was edited out.
- The BGM for scene where Vijay meets Shriya (in temple) reminded me very much
of Sahana tune.. (probably the temple setting, hero following herione with his
sidekick lead to it)

ESP thrillers are not completely strange tamil audience. Manivannan's
Nooravathu Naal (Vijaykanth/ Mohan) was entirely based on heroine having ESP
about her own murder, which apparently was a big hit.

Subject: [arr] My ATM movie, BGM review

For the past 3 years, the movie I am watching in cinema theaters are those that
have ARRs music. I had to travel 5+ hrs (to and fro) just to watch the movie.
Reason being, obviously, one magical name - ARR and this is the first Vijay
movie I am watching in a movie hall.

Whistling when ARR's name appears in the screen is biggest pleasure I can
attain and yes it happened when I saw ATM too. As usual, there were lot of
whistles when ARR's name appeared in the screen.

+'s of ATM movie:

1. BGM - electrifying at instances and overall very good. But, we have to keep
in mind that BGM for this movie is a result of record 15 days work (ARR has
himself confirmed this). All you need to create good music is a peaceful
atmosphere where there isn't external stress, tension. But, in this case, ARR
just had 15 days to compose the BGM and still the BGM has turned out to be the
as good as it can be. When you have 45 days to compose BGM (as in Sivaji), BGM
is outstanding throughout the movie and when u have 15 days to compose the BGM,
the result is kind of varies accordingly but only ARR can handle it so
professionally.

Check out for:
a. opening credit
b. ESP theme - electrifying
c. kelamal chorus - especially the initial humming is amazing
d. second half vijay vs vijay fight sequence BGM - superb!
e. final fight sequence BGM

2. Editing - the only thing that makes the movie to move fast is BGM and
editing, not the screenplay. Editing is exceptional throughout the movie..
Especially for ponmagal vandhal song. Hats off to Antony.
3. Special effects - Special effects in fight sequences are mindblowing.
4. Dance - excellent
5. Action - very good
6. Cinematography - good
7. Comedy - good
8. Screenplay - good
9.Story - good

Glad to see a story without another villain. Vijay vs Vijay scenes were
pleasant to watch.

Song picturization:
1. Ponmagal vandhal - Excellent. Well placed in the movie.
2. Maduraku - good
3. Valayapatti - very good but raaga mania done by madhumitha was cut
4. Merlyn Monroe - Good
5. Ella pughazum - dance sequence and song theme dosent match. Also, last 5
secs (hair-raising line) was cut.
6. Kelamal - okay

-ve's of the movie:

1. Blunt climax - Almost everyone were laughing! I really dont understand the
fact how a villain would turn good after hearing few dialouges that are said in
the climax. Had the climax been handled well, it would have given the movie a
new shape as ESP thriller is new to tamil cinema. But, climax was really
screwed up.
2. Song placements were almost here and there. It is an unwritten formula in
tamil cinema that there should be a song sequence 20 minutes before the climax.
Valayappati song was placed awkwardly. Viewers were murmuring, oh my god, a
song came.. uff... There was enough room in that plot that it could have
placed in a very good slot.
On the other hand, the way ponmagal song was placed was totally contrasting and
it received lot of whistles. Even maduraiku song received whistles.

Overall the movie is good in the context of a debutant director's movie that
has some electrifying BGM, excpetional editing and special effects.

This movie will run 100 days, not because the movie is good. It is because of
the reason, all vijay movies (for the past 5 years) run for atleast 100 days!

As Rahmaniacs, we have to be satisfied that till Pongal, i.e. for 60+ days, we
can hear ATM songs in all tamil channels and radio..

Long live ARR..

A R Rahman's song in a jiffy

By Behindwoods News Bureau.

November 12, 2007

How often have heard this line: "The `Mozart of Madras' has done it yet again."
A. R Rahman, after giving finishing touches to the musical version of the Lord
of the Rings, which received good response from the audience and critics alike,
is back in town ready to set the pulse racing with his beats.

In fact, for Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan the music director had asked for a
couple of days time, during the first week of November, to compose the
background score but the producers felt that it would be too late for a
Deepavali release and had them composed by duo Sabesh–Murali after explaining
the situation to Rahman.
But Producer `Kalai Puli' Dhanu's son Kala Prabhu, not wanting to compromise on
the music, patiently waited for Rahman to return and finish the one remaining
song for his debut directorial venture Sakkarakatti, which happens to be
Shantanu Bhakyaraj's debut as well. Rahman, on returning from London, called
Kala Prabhu and lyricist Vaali and immediately started composing music for the
song. He is said to have finished the composition in a jiffy, which had Kala
Prabhu jumping around the studio with joy as the movie was waiting only for
this song to be canned.

Re: [arr] Compiling a list of racy, edgy, thrilling music pieces

2007-11-10 Thread Sam
Just watched ATM.. and the list grows.

- Vijay's ESP BGM piece (this is fantastic)

For those who are interested in the movie review: The story sucks big time
(especially the second half) and with lot of MTV style special effects it looks
like some poor quality animation movie. No logic and No magic.

The BGM, songs and the audio quality were the only saving grace..(Audio quality
was better compared to Sivaji - don't know if this movie's BGM was recorded in
a different studio).

Re: [arr] Please anybody record ARR interview in sun tv tommorrow at 9.30 am

2007-11-07 Thread Sam
It was not so good interview by SUN TV. (When they will ever know to ask proper
questions)..

Highlights:
- ARR has spent considerable effort in re-recording. (Vijay hinted that now
A.R.Rahman will be known as R.R.Rahman)
- Vaali insisted ARR to sing the intro song and the song had to start with M
(Ma in Tamil) (sentiment- Mustafa, Muqabla?)).
- Vijay asked why ARR is not doing lot of tamil films. ARR replied that he is
now picky and would select only films that has merit as lot of efforts were
wasted (withount mentioning names)
- Rest of the talk were around Vijay's stardom and family time etc

[arr] ATM - My View/Reaction

2007-10-28 Thread Sam Sujith
1. Ellapugazhum: Requisite "big opening" to the song...nice to hear
the claps, vocals and the guitar chug to achieve the bigness of the
sound, instead of the trumpets and timpanis and such...also, the
opening sounds are very minimal and still owing to their sound design
convey the bigness properly...but then, the ensuing rhythm is a let
down..kind of wimpy...though the rhythm seems to carry the song, its a
letdown for me...I like the way the song is tuned...a straight forward
minor scale tune, with no elaborate ornaments and all...and eschewing
the tired pallavi-charanam format...But why the Michale Jackson like
imitation at one point? It may or may not have been intentional, but
kind of robs something for me... I like the solo horn(s) in the
interlude...the arrangements become dense and light at the proper
moments conveying a nice punch (hey thoda after the first charanam for
example)...a very different end to the song with some high pitched
vocals...

2.Ponmagal: Couldnt quite warm up to this song...the rap turns me
off...liked the charanam though...nicely built up, and ARR even
"samples" the original singer from the old original song at couple of
points...that was a nice twist...

3.Kelaamal: Another disappointment for me...depending on my mood. Of
most of the times I heard this song, it sounded tired..the tune,
arrangements and all...Blame my perceptions, but the tune sounded
nomadic...couldnt quite get the direction of it...seemed to
wander...And the arrangement was a bigger let down...standard 4/4 kick
and bass, with some gated sounds and arps and some bells and
whistles...The violin pieces only added to the normalness of the
song...I guess I would have loved this song, if it were given some
Narumugaye like arrangements...On the other hand, if I am in a good
mood, I can just listen to it as it as and not be bothered by it...but
its not happening much with this song...

4.Nee Marilyn: Now this I adore...the playfullness in the song is very
evident without beating me over the head...nice buildup right from the
beginning...the DJ naan phrase is absolutely tasty...the singers had
the perfect delivery...the FMish synth lead, the portamento motif are
delicious...also love the way the song is structured...in short, I
like everything about the song (lyrics I dont understand)...and best
of all, I can bob my head to it..

5.Maduraikku: The tune sounded vaguely familiar...but I love the
timbre of the voices...made a huge difference...I love the way the
charanam is tuned...and the way the female singer finishes off the
second charanam is an absolute delight...made me wish that she had
sung the whole song in that octave...her timbre is raw and beautiful
there...I have never been disappointed in general by ARR's nadaswaram
solos and they dont disappoint here either...the drums sounded a bit
weak and cramped for me though...it cud be the speakers...but I
remember the rhythm sections in Sangamam being more punchy, breathy
and spacey, and Sangamam employed a huge range of percussion...

6.Valayapatti: Another delightful song for me...A natural progression
for Kummi Aadi...or rather a better version of Kummi Aadi...love the
introduction, the female voice introducing the more sombre part of the
song...the following arrangements make a better sense when viewed over
the course of the whole intro, rather than the individual parts...how
they say about sum being greater than the parts...and then some
instruments introduce us the valayapatti melody line and the male
singers just rush from there...the whole pallavi makes for an
interesting listen...with the male voices being rumbunctious and
rushed, while the female lines are subdued and relaxed...couldnt make
out much out of the first interlude, probably works better on the
screen...the charanam arrangements are very nice again for me...pa pa
ni sa lines are introduced as swaras by the male vocals in the first
charanam, while the female sings some lyrics to the same tune in the
second charanam...and the remaining lines are the same pattern over
diffeent set of notes for the male and female voices...like it when
the whole chorus joins in saying the raga name...observe the weak and
strong accents of the bars when saying kalyani, bhagyasri, neelambari
versus sindhubhairavi...a change from where the vocal emphasis is more
rhythm oriented to something lyric oriented...I am a zero in carnatic
, but I like the way swaras sound...neways, I think I am ramblng
on...but this song works for me...

overall, i cud appreciate ARR doing varied projects at the same time,
but from this album, I would come back and listen to nee marlin and
valayapatti frequently, and i wud listen to ellapuzhagum and
maduraikku now and then...what i mean is it cud have been a better
album, so in a sense, some sort of disappointment...Now ARR definelty
knows better than me on how the songs are and how they shud be
like, its just that for my tastes, it wasnt a complete match...not
that it matters what i feel

Most likely it may go to SEL. I think these websites are speculating because of
Bollywood connection (Kajol heroine etc).. Let' see.. If it happens it would be
very interesting..

Subject: [arr] ARR + Kamal + RelianceAdlabs = Marmayogi

Initially it was touted that dasavatharam will have ARR as music director but
Kamal did something to put Himesh in that movie.. Not sure how far this new
news would become true, anyway, the news as it stands today:

Close on the heels of completing 'Dasavatharam', Kamal Haasan has reportedly
commenced works for his next film. A mega-budget movie, it would be produced by
Reliance Adlabs.
Reports suggest that the movie has been titled 'Marmayogi' and it would be
directed by Kamal Haasan himself.
Touted to be an historical adventure film, 'Marmayogi' will have musical score
by A R Rahman. Interestingly, it was the title of MGR's film released in 1951.

'I am jobless' Now that Shah Rukh Khan is not doing Shanker's Robot, he says
that he's jobless. In characteristic good humour, he adds, "I hope to find
work" Back to Section Stories Posted On Wednesday, October 24, 2007 Kunal M
Shah Shah Rukh Khan and South director Shanker are no longer working together.
This means that Shah Rukh will no longer be part of the much-publicised and
much-awaited film, Robot. Touted to be a slick, stylised film, Robot had
generated a lot of attention from viewers and industrywallahs alike. The film
is supposed to go on the floors early next year. Shanker has earlier made only
one Hindi film, Nayak with Anil Kapoor and Robot was supposed to go on the
floors by early next year. Shah Rukh Khan Our sources reveal that owing to
creative differences, SRK and Shankar have decided to not work together, and
needless to say, it's in the best interest of the film. Shah Rukh says, "Yes,
we have called it off. We were not happy with few
things, among them being the fact that his take on the film was completely
different from mine. We had worked very hard on the film in the last four
months and it is sad that we had to call it off. There were certain issues and
both Shanker and I decided that we won't make it. It was amicably done and
there is no bad blood." What next for SRK? "I had taken seven months off for
Robot but now I am jobless. Even Rajkumar Hirani's film is not happening. Don 2
will on the floors in 2008 end and so I am pretty jobless for the time being.
However, I am sure that I will manage to get some work." What about rumours
about him doing Dhoom 3? "I am not doing Dhoom 3. I don't know why people keep
on saying that I am doing it. As for Don 2, it will start in 2008 end as Farhan
is currently producing 3-4 films and it's their baby, they are the producers,
not me." As for Om Shanti Om (OSO), he says, "I think today films should be
made with a little more logic. That's
when we decided to make a film about the '70s. That way we could have our dose
of songs and dance. You will see lot of dialogue like `Mujhe Bhagwaan ke liye
chod do', etc. We also have the dialogue like, `Beta maine tere liye kheer
banai hai'."
