Of the two one will be a duet and the other will be a solo song for the hero. Tamil ‘VTV’ had seven songs and Hindi will have eight. [arr] Oman had never seen anything like the Jai Ho concert !
Music without borders Oscar winner opens up about his philosophy and shuttling between LA and Chennai creating universal music * By Sunil K. Vaidya, Oman Bureau Chief * Published: 00:00 January 24, 2010 * Concert Review Jai Ho, Rahman Oman had never seen anything like the Jai Ho concert before as over 15,000 people packed the Royal Oman Police Stadium on Thursday night to watch Oscar winner A.R. Rahman perform with a troupe of 90 artists. Drummer par excellence Shiv Mani set the tone for the three-hour show that started on time at 8pm and ended on the stroke of 11pm. The concert proved that shows of this scale can be held in Muscat and audiences would pay to watch. Massive LED screens made a perfect backdrop as everything worked to precision. Hundreds of lights dazzled the wide stage as the sound quality and 3D projection provided a life-like effect throughout the show. Rahman was, as usual, most unassuming on stage, but unleashed his vast repertoire of songs and demonstrated his ability to handle different instruments, including an unplugged session on a giant pedal piano with Hariharan, Sadhna Sargam, Rashid Ali and Javed Ali. Rahman let his music take centre stage and did not indulge in costume changes, a la Bollywood shows, but made sure to wear the Omani mussar (headgear) when he got lost singing sufi songs. If there was a sombre sufi session by Rahman on harmonium while sitting on the floor, then there were peppy hip-hop, pop, reggae, heavy metal, rap and ballads to satiate the eclectic audience. The audience jumped, danced and whistled with joy throughout the concert and went away with moist eyes as Rahman called it a day with the emotional rendition of the Indian national song Vande Mataram. click the link for more... http://gulfnews.com/arts-entertainment/celebrity/music-without-borders-1.572485 AR Rahman - His music for ears for years From: Vijay Mohan Iyer vi...@kmmusiq.com To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sun, January 24, 2010 9:21:47 AM Subject: Re: [arr] (SemiARR) Anmol Bhave bags National Award for best Sound ! Rahman holds his Slumdog Millionare Oscars (Best Score and Best Original Song) at a post-award party in Los Angeles this February. Mario Anzuoni / Reuters In less than 20 years, AR Rahman has come to dominate Indian popular music by breaking all of its borders. S Subramanian reads a new biography of Bollywood’s great assimilator. AR Rahman: The Musical Storm Kamini Mathai Penguin India Dh38 The Indian composer AR Rahman, recent winner of a pair of Academy Awards for his jaunty songs in Slumdog Millionaire, has over the years demonstrated a keen talent for reaching new, rapidly appreciative audiences. This talent is typically discussed in reference to his work outside India, which began early this century when he collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the saccharine West End confection Bombay Dreams, pairing reworked versions of some of his most outstanding songs from the 1990s with some of his worst original music. Since then, his work has featured on Broadway and in Chinese and Hollywood films. All this, particularly the Slumdog Oscars, has made Rahman the first Indian composer to find substantial audiences beyond the already large world of his country’s film industry. But Rahman’s first, more impressive feat of border-crossing occurred much earlier, when he became the first Indian composer with a pan-Indian audience. So often is Bollywood used as a symbol of the entire Indian film industry that it is easy to overlook the country’s diversity of other regional cinema. Outside Mumbai, other sizeable film industries operate like self-contained planets, producing movies in the languages of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali. The borders between the four south Indian cinemas are, for actors, directors and composers, particularly fluid; the border between south Indian cinema and Hindi cinema has, because of deeper linguistic differences, traditionally been far less permeable. Even music, that much-vaunted universal language, sat for long in decidedly regional compartments. The music of the Bollywood and Tamil film industries may have shared roots in the Indian seven-note scale, for instance, but they long ago developed into entirely different sensibilities. In their default modes, they leaned in different directions: Bollywood toward plaintive romantic or existential ballads; Tamil music toward raga-based classical or rhythm-heavy indigenous folk. They used different instruments: the harmonium would have sounded as odd in Tamil music as the veena in Bollywood. The gulf separating these genres was a wide one, spanned only by the occasional work of the occasional composer. Perhaps work on the bridge that now connects them had tentatively begun in the years before Rahman, but only after he brought power cranes to the job, completed its construction, and made a few sorties back and forth did other composers feel consistently comfortable doing the same. Rahman’s debut soundtrack, Roja, released in 1992, provides a classic example of how his music functions. A song will start simply, with a spare melody and vocals with power but no apparent ambition to blow the listener away. Within seconds, that all changes. The melody might enter a dense burst of orchestration, or yield to a solo by an unexpected instrument, or somehow reveal itself to be based on a highly classical raga. The vocals might shift colour, from modest to epic, or from normal singing to Rahman’s own free-spirited yodels, or from pristine enunciation to humming. The rhythm can come out of wood blocks, or steel drums, or something that sounds distinctly like a brass pot being hit with a bunched fist. Mixed together, this reminds you of reggae one minute, Tamil folk the next, then electronica, then south Indian classical – all together in one alluring whole. Nearly 20 years after that debut, Rahman’s music still sparks interesting (albeit well-worn) debates among music-lovers. What exactly is Rahman’s genius? Does it lie in his arrangements, his meticulous layering of sounds and voices as if they were sheets of phyllo? Or in his generous accommodation of styles, or in his industrious production of catchy hooks? In other words: is he “simply” a technically savvy producer of commercial music? Or do arrangement, stylistic flexibility and hook-production fall legitimately under the rubric of musical artistry, and is Rahman exactly what his legions of devoted fans say he is: a straight-up compositional genius?

It's Rahman's music, so it will be interesting to say the least, but that type of music is not my cup of tea usually. Again, these are just thoughts and I'm in no way judging the album prematurely. Once it releases, I will listen with an open mind and hopefully be surprised here and there. I'm hopeful there will be at least one soulful/slow number with the Rahmantic magic.

I accept that A R Rahman is a genius when it comes to music and ask him, he would definitely attribute that to his hardwork, intelligently making moves, applying to right academies to appreciate his music - like Academy Awards, and associating with best in the industry so that all of them benifit by that. So, all that is his strategy, which we too should learn and apply in our respective fields. There is no reason for us to go on mentioning in every mail that I am a Die hard Rahmaniac. Just say I like his music. Instead of saying You know what? Today I was very lucky, I saw HIM at the airport You know, the security guard said you are Rahman fan so you can go without security check kind of things are very stupid. I am sure that even A R Rahman would not expect these things from us fans. If you ask him personally, he would say what stupidity his fans do. Discuss about his compositions, * discuss what you liked in it, * let the other person also remind you of other composition that you might have forgotten, * try to enjoy the nuances of his music, * focus on lyrics, * musical instruments used, * the way he switches from one Raga to other, * get more technical, * teach other who don't know the basics of music like Ragas, * discuss those things, * share your renditions, * let others give their feedback - These kind of healthy discussions shud be there. Not saying I saw him here, there, kind of things. Vithur and other co-ordinators please understand my point and explain it to other Rahmaniacs. One final thing, by just talking about the genius of A R Rahman, nothing good is going to happen to us. We will just keep seing how high Rahman goes each day.. He has shaped his life very well. He is planning for what he wants and he is achieving that. But what about us? When will we be like that So just admire his talent, aspire to be someone like him, or if music is not your cup of tea, use that inspiration to become better in you field. Just use his acheivements as your motivation and ofcourse his music will be on you side to support you (morally). IF WE DO THIS, NO ONE WILL BE MORE HAPPIER THAN A R RAHMAN HIMSELF, because he will he happy for he inspired many for their own development and progress. No cash price for Oscar winners? AR Rahman - His music for ears for years From: Vithur vith...@gmail.com To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 5:47:41 PM Subject: [arr] The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8.5 pounds If all goes right for A R Rahman and Resul Pokutty, they might end up lifting a 13.5-inch and 8.5 pound knight holding a crusader's sword and standing on a reel of film on Academy night. The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8.5 pounds. The film reel features five spokes, signifying the five original branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers. Although the statuette remains true to its original design, the size of the base varied until 1945, when the current standard was adopted. Since the initial awards banquet on May 16, 1929, in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel's Blossom Room, 2,701 statuettes have been presented. Every year in January, additional new golden statuettes are cast, moulded, polished and buffed by R S Owens Company, the Chicago-based awards manufacturer retained by the Academy since 1982. MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on a reel of film gripping a crusader's sword. The Academy tapped Los Angeles sculptor George Stanley to realize the design in three dimensions and the world-renowned statuette was born. Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by its nickname, Oscar. According to the Academy, the statuettes presented at the initial ceremonies were gold-plated solid bronze. Within a few years the bronze was abandoned in favour of Britannia metal, a pewter-like alloy which is then plated in copper, nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold. Due to a metal shortage during World War II, Oscars were made of painted plaster for three years. Following the war, the Academy invited recipients to redeem the plaster figures for gold-plated metal ones. Achievements in up to 25 regular categories will be honoured on February 22 at the 81st Academy Awards presentation at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Center. However, the Academy won't know how many statuettes it will hand out until the envelopes are opened on Oscar Night. Although the number of categories and special awards are known in advance, the possibility of ties and of multiple recipients sharing the prize in some categories makes it impossible to predict the exact number of statuettes to be awarded. As in previous years, any surplus awards will be housed in the Academy's vault until next year's event. Source - http://www.thehindu businessline. com/2009/ 02/24/stories/ 2009022451020500 .htm New Delhi, Feb. 23 Will A.R. Rahman be required to pay Customs duty on his Oscar statuettes? No one knows yet. The statuettes are not solid gold, but gold-plated. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) thinks the two statuettes may be worth about $1,000. Rahman will be returning with two in his hand baggage. For passengers (above 10 years of age), who return after a stay abroad of more than three days, the Customs baggage rules allow duty-free clearance for articles up to Rs 25,000. This, however, does not cover gold or silver, in any form other than ornaments. Earlier in the day, at a Revenue Department function for laying the foundation stone for Rajaswa Bhawan, the Union Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, suggested tax exemption on cash awards that may come with the Oscars bagged by Rahman. If the Oscars carry a cash award, I would recommend to the Finance Minister that it should be exempt from taxation, Mr Chidambaram had said. There is a precedent for taxing such trophies. In 2002, Sachin Tendulkar, after he scored 29 centuries to equal Sir Donald Bradman's record, was gifted a Ferrari by its makers. The then finance minister said the government was waiving the Customs duty of Rs 1.13 crore on it. But the rules said that waivers were not allowed on gifts, only on prizes. In 2003, the Finance Bill of 2003 was amended and Sachin brought in the Ferrari without payment of the Customs duty. This led to a public interest litigation and Sachin offered to pay. Eventually, Ferrari paid the duty.

Cool Jon From: Aaditya(Addy) *COOL* adityacool6@ yahoo.co. in To: arrahmanfans@ yahoogroups. com Sent: Tuesday, 25 November, 2008 2:19:08 PM Subject: [arr] Ghajini's music is just average. Hi Rahmanics, Long wait for the album just couldn’t pay off. Ghajini has been one of the average albums of A.R.Rahman so far though the album is completely different from the original one but Rahman just couldn’t manage to outdo Harris Jeyraj's Ghajini. Rahman had been very impressive in Jodhaa Akbar, the music was a class. ADA and JTYJN too were typical Rahman albums. Last month's Yuvvraaj was also good but definitely not one of his finest work. Even CD sales didn’t look encouraging for Yuvvraaj but overall it was very good stuff. But what can I say for Ghajini, I think Rahman was not in mood of composing this album. Rahman should have been very careful in handling this project because the kind of music which Harris Jeyraj had delivered in Tamil version was one of the greatest works in terms of music in Indian Cinema. You just can’t compare that with the recently released Hindi Ghajini. Very interesting to see Joginder Tuteja giving very high rating for this album instead he should have given it for Jodhaa Akbar, 4/5 for Ghajini is too much. I think he tried to play safe this time. I got the copy yesterday and listened to it atleast 8 times but still I didn’t find any songs better except Behka and Guzarish (not as good as Suthum Vizhium though). Behka is uniquely refreshing number by Rahman with great vocal rendering by Karthik. Karthik rocks in Behka. About the Rest it will take very long time to grow on you. 1. Guzarish – Good one but not the best, Javed Ali's voice is ok-ok. (3/5) 2. Aye Bachchu - No comments, X-micchi Y-micchi was better. (2/5) 3. Kaise Mujhe – Dissappointing. (2/5) 4. Behka - Only song I liked, Rahman managed to compose this song well. (4/5) 5. Latoo - Oh my god what was Rahman trying to do in this song. Rahmanji please don’t try to experiment too much. (2.75/5) 6. Kaise Mujhe (instrumental) is not as good as previous Rahman’s instrumental tracks. (2.5/5) Album Rating: 2.5/5 . Top songs: Behka, Guzarish. Keeping finger crossed for BGMs. Rahman gave 3 hit albums this year, Jodhaa Akbar, JTYJN and Sakkarakatti. Yuvvraaj was good album but couldn’t create magic as Taal in terms of audio sales. ADA ’s sales were very bad too. Ghajini, I don’t know but by the way Rahman had delivered music it too might fall down badly. It all depends on how the songs have been shot and whether the songs are fitting to the situation and most important thing of all will “Aamir Khan” factor help boost the album sales. Rahman had been consistently impressive with the following directors: 1. Maniratnam 2. Shankar 3. Ashutosh Gowariker Leaving the above 3 directors Rahman had given very few good albums. Among the 6 albums of A.R.Rahman released this year (Jodhaa Akbar, ADA , JTYJN, Sakkarakatti, Yuvvraaj, Ghajini) Jodhaa Akbar is the best. Yuvvraaj and JTYJN were also good. Finally Rahman who started year with rich music concludes very badly. I would better listen to all his earlier albums all over again instead of listening Ghajini’s music. Note: This was my personal feeling I always liked ARR's album but Ghajini's music somehow didn't convince me. Regards, Aditya Add more friends to your messenger and enjoy! Invite them now.

PLS SOMEONE HELP On Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 8:56 AM, Vithur [EMAIL PROTECTED] com wrote: Living in London, did you get to estimate how much of a rage Kabhi Kabhi Aditi from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na would turn out to be? Although I'm based in London, I travel a lot to India and have many contacts there. And in today's time of Internet boom, topographical difference can hardly be a dampener. Besides, there are many satellite Asian channels, which play Bollywood music. And Aditi is not the only song that I had sung in the film, there's also Kahin to. Earlier too, I had sung a number, Ishq Ada Hai in the film, Ada. So, it's not that I'm clueless about how my songs are doing. I also made it a point to catch the flick. What was the response to your first playback, Ishq Ada Hai? Ishq Ada Hai was recorded seven years back as AR was looking for a singer who could sing in a totally different style. In addition, AR essentially wanted an acoustic and organic feel to the song. He asked me to play some guitar and I started experimenting with what became the intro. He wanted an intense effect to the voice and suggested that style. I was glad that song was chosen for the promo of the film and found its way to the top five in many charts. I'm pleased that both this song and Kabhi Kabhi Aditi were the first songs on each of the respective albums. Was a career in music a natural choice, since your mother carved a niché for herself in the world of classical music? My mother was a ghazal singer but she would regularly perform lighter music. She successfully recorded some albums in UK, one of which featured Ustad Ghulam Mustafa's compositions. As far as I'm concerned, I broadened my outlook in music having adapted to many genres in Western, Asian and World music. Thankfully, I've also gained a lot of experience in studio work as well as by performing live with many musicians — playing Jazz gigs to Arabic music. Having recognized my ethnicity, I also listened to many Indian artistes whilst growing up. You had worked with Rahman on the Bombay Dreams project and had been part of the troupe for a while as a guitarist, before this big break. How did the two of you come together? I met AR at a concert in UK, seven years ago. The initial conversation was completely about my mother, Farida Ali's connection with Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, since he had worked on her ghazal album in UK and also about my love for Jazz music. You started off as a guitarist and then emerged as a singer... From the beginning, AR knew I was also a singer. It just took time for tracks like Ishq Ada Hai to surface. India is looking for new sounds and styles — now is a good time to be in Bollywood. When you chatted Rahman up, were you aware of his iconic status? At that point of time, I did not know too much about AR's projects, other than the fact that he had given music for Bombay, Rangeela and Taal. You are 42 and yet sound like a 20-something in Aditi. Has age got nothing to do with how one sounds? Talent is not age-dependent. I do naturally have a young voice, since I do look after my voice and myself. Having given a smash hit, would you now like to pursue Bollywood seriously? Since I am a singer, I feel that I would like to pursue any projects, which will highlight my abilities. Bollywood is an important part in the spectrum of entertainment. Besides this, I hope to further showcase myself as a guitarist and composer. What's keeping you busy at the moment? Right now, I am working on my own album which will be produced by AR Rahman's own music label. I am the first one to be signed on by him. I want India to discover not just Rashid Ali's voice but also what his own music and guitar playing is about. There's no denying one thing — Rashid Ali is here to stay. http://timesofindia .indiatimes. com/India_ Buzz/Talent_ is_not_age- dependent/ articleshow/ 3381456.cms -- regards, Vithur ARR -- The Sweet Cube always

Q :- So, When did you meet RAHMAN ? SG :- It was a long back story. It was 1993. I remember , Rahman's Roja Film music was released. Few people were talking in Bombay. New boy coming out with a genius quality in him, compared to other Music Director. So, I was coming from Mysore to Bangalore. At that time, in the car, the driver was playing songs of Roja. The songs were being played, and I asked him whose film it is ?. He says that it is A.R. Rahman from Madras. I said, ya ya. I have heard his name. So, I kept hearing those songs. So, it was two to three hours journey. So, I heard two three times. I could see a lot of talent, innovative quality because I have been trained under Laxmikanth Pyaralal for 20 years, and I had music sense from my childhood. So I had developed an ear for music. I talked to him; I love your music and am planning a film. I would like to have your services as Music Composer. So, he was quite excited and he said, Even I love your Film Hero, and I used to play Hero's tunes, while I was a keyboard player. So, immediately, we clicked with each other. It was a very mutual admiration for each other, and when I met him, I could see his clean and Divine qualities in this man. I remember when he said, Lets do a good job. I talked to him about money. How much money I should pay?. He says, Lets do a good music. We shall talk about it later. So I understood his character, and that he is more passionate about his work. And i started blending with him, and we started to work on a film called SHIKHAR, which finally couldnt place. But then , it happened in TAAL. I would say, that I was the first from the Hindi Film Industry who noticed him from the Bombay Industry and who came to work with him, and everyone in Bombay Industry was surprised to see me coming down and working with a South Indian Music Director. There were frowns and questions in Bombay, as to how a Music Director from South India, could make music for a Hindi Film, and find a place in Hindi Industry. In Hindi Music, there is always a Northern Music which is dominating. So, they were wondering, How I am going to justify ?. So, I told him, Dont worry. YOu know the Indian Classical and Western Music well. And he really proved , while recording two songs . Ishq Bina Jeena Kya was recorded first, which I later on recorded in Taal. Re: [arr] [Semi-ARR]: 3:20 tentative running time for JA
so how many songs cut off ? shemil music1st - Original Message From: Thulasi Ram [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 11:03:18 AM Subject: [arr] [Semi-ARR]: 3:20 tentative running time for JA So what's the running time of the most-awaited film of the year -- JODHAA AKBAR? While UTV and Ashutosh Gowariker have been keeping quiet about its final length, this writer has learnt of some facts pertaining to its running time. The rough cut of JODHAA AKBAR was of almost 4 hours' duration, which was brought down to 3.20 hours. However, the film may be trimmed further, thereby making the final length anywhere between 3 and 3.20 hours. Since the film is of epic proportions, it wouldn't be possible to bring down its length below 3 hours, which means that the historical will be of 3 + hours for sure. Await the official statement from Gowariker and UTV. http://indiafm. com/news/ 2008/01/22/ 10767/index. html Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! [arr] 'qawwali' dropped from JODHAA AKBAR
Scoops News Rahman's 'qawwali' dropped from JODHAA AKBAR - October 30, 2007 2:01:16 PM IST Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network View Jodhaa Akbar Movie Poster It may come as a shock to many that a spectacular 'qawwali' by the maestro, A R Rahman, has been dropped from Ashutosh Gowariker and UTV's republic week release, JODHAA AKBAR. The traditional 'qawwali', from the movie that features the 'Indian Greek God', Hrithik Roshan and timeless beauty Aishwarya (Rai) Bachchan, had been extravagantly picturised, a while back. The music director of the magnum opus, A R Rahman, informs that it was a mutually agreed decision, as there was no situational demand. Rahman also has interesting information regarding the above mentioned 'qawwali'. As per the composer, so impressed is Aishwarya Bachchan with the composition that she wants to use it in her next project/movie. Well, for now we can only wait and watch whether Ashutosh concedes to the demand of the Bachchan 'bahu'! http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/07/oct/30_jodha_akbar_aishwarya_hrithik_a_r_rehman_100704.asp shemil music1st __ Do You Yahoo!?
