Actually hindi is NOT the national language of India it's the princial official
language (for govt. administration etc.)India has MANY national languages
actually..

this is from Wikipedia:

The principal official language of the Republic of India is Standard Hindi,
while English is the secondary official language.[2] The constitution of India
states that The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari
script.[3] Neither the Constitution of India nor Indian law specifies a
National language, a position supported by a High Court ruling.[4] However,
languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian constitution are
sometimes
referred to, without legal standing, as the national languages of India.[5][6]

Because India's national language is Hindi.

Commonwealth of Nations includes Big members like..
Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, United
  Kingdom etc..
Since 2010 CWG event to be held in INDIA, the song was in our National
  Language..
But even the song should be in English version too..
so that it ll reach all over the world..
i know Music has No Boundary.. but Language has..
So it's better to release in English too..
otherwise there is no meaning of comparing it with 'waka waka'.

I am not aware, could anyone tell me whether waka was released in
other languages, or whether other theme songs in India, like Ath
Swagatam shubh swagatam of asiad 84 was released in any other language?

Gautham Menon's poetic love story ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya' recently completed
one hundred days and is still running. Meanwhile Gautham is also ready to
start the Hindi version of ‘VTV’.

One major change for the Hindi version is the songs. A R Rahman has composed
two new tunes for the Hindi version. Of the two one will be a duet and the
other will be a solo song for the hero. Tamil ‘VTV’ had seven songs and Hindi
will have eight.

A R Rahman had delivered the new tunes to Gautham before leaving on his Jai
Ho world tour. The pilot versions of the songs were recorded at ARR studios
in Chennai to enable the creative team to work on their digital story boards.
Trisha will play Jessie even in the Hindi version while Raj Babbar's son
Pratiek Babbar will be Karthik.

I agree to you 100%. People in the West have always been the giants because
they fall under a widely accepted market, which is all over the world. But
according to me, what AR is showcasing is his own works in India to the Western
World, who majority at this point would have only heard his Slumdog/Couple' s
retreat but they should also get to hear our legends many other gems. I think
this is the very best time to come and attack, rather than wait for more
western recognition and stuff like that. There is this proverb Make hay while
Sun shines and I'm sure our AR will make his Music Shine in the West too,
through this concert. Plus its a great feeling to spread Indian Music and I'm
happy to see AR doing it. So lets promote this idea, rather than comparing him
to the people from the West.

Just my 2 cents :)

. R. Rahman plans to be out of India for the longest period. And
Bollywood filmmakers like Abbas Tyrewala and Mani Ratnam who have
pending work with Rahman have pressed the panic button.

Rahman won't be available for film scores during most of 2010. It's
a very tough schedule for me this year, says Rahman. I'll be out of
the country for five months which I've kept aside completely for the
 word tour.

The concerts will take Rahman to places he has never been before. I
essentially need time for my music, spirituality and family.
Everything else is secondary. We'll be going to remote places in
Europe, the Far East and America. I'll be touring from this month
(March 2010).This would be my longest tour ever and I'm not thinking
 of any other work.

Contrary to reports Rahman turned 43 (and not 44) on January 6. I
was born in 1967, so it's my 43rd birthday. I am an old man now. Do I
feel older? It's a good feeling. I'm heading towards the place where
all of us are destined to .You are born and then one day, you die. So
my policy in life is to do what I want to do today, not tomorrow. If
I want to do good things in life I better do them now.

Hi, i am great arr fan and i love his music. but it is sad to say that he also
copies tunes. I have not noticed this before in his hindi alblums but i found
it in 'Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya'. Actually he is known for originality. but
thats' not true i think. May be he have used nepali tunes since nepali people
don't listen tamil song and though no one will know it. Only i am the person
to listen tamil songs as well since beign a fan of arr. The music starting
from 1:37 to 2:38 in Anbil Avan is ditto copy from one of the nepali songs. I
dont remember the song but the music is exactly same. I doon't know why arr
uses it. Also, the additional voices tune in Aaromale is also seems to be
copied . I have already heard that tune in one of the nepali songs.IIf i wil
find those nepali song then surely i will share in this group. Prevously
Vishhal-shekar also copied some nepali tunes.

anyway arr is great.

2010-01-24 Thread Shamil Sharif
The Sydney concert had a lot of changes in presentation apart from his previous
concerts.

1) Inside the stage, the wide 3d screen makes the concert more enjoyable., its
really high class,variety.
2) Rahman's entry with his speach marks a new change itself and felt more proud
of him.
3) Its good when performer's name shown on the screen.
4) Light and sound., no words..thanks for the effort for all the crew.
5) New singing style from the Chorus team, seems a good move
6) Energetic performance by dancers, felt they were really jumped inside the
screen after yuva bit..excellent work by the creators.
7) AR came into the crowd, where the securites rounded by him...hamma hamma
hamma..wow!
8) At the end, Rahman's speach at the Oscar comes into the screen followed by
Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Martin Lunther King Jr.

What a way to create the frienship and love between the two nations, Thank you
AR for this lovely treat...

No mate.. definitely did not pay for this one.. but did pay for his other
concerts..

Many of my friends / colleagues who attended / saw this concert (as well as his
previous ones) felt AR and other singers blew it at times.. not the entire song
though..just a wee bit.. but that's enough for us to notice the difference..
especially I dare say that we hear his songs more times than himself.

If I recall correctly, AR apologized to the audience when Noor-un-ala- noor (by
Qadir / Murtaza) went totally off track in Singapore concert.. (and that was so
nice of him..)

I guess we have come a long way now.. concerts are getting much better with the
presentation / performance. . I certainly wouldn't miss a chance to attend his

Are you taking your anger out here because some one conned you into paying for
a free concert? Jokes apart, Sam, that's hitting below the belt, can't let that
pass. Constructive criticism is welcome but just as we don't need yes men, we
don't need slanderers either.

I think Rahman Offkey is certainly a loose statement and not worth to
respond, but since ARR is my Guru, I am doing so,

The songs sung by ARR are those also composed by him so he has every right to
perform them in whatever way / remix them / change the tone in any way he
wants. Audience comes to see him performing and not to check if all his tones
are true to the CD. And let ARR decide how he wants to sing his own songs.

If ARR wanted to add any additional lyrics / miss out on some / change the
tone / tune during concert, it is his song / creation and he has full right
 to do so.

So please refrain from making such statements which none of us are qualified
 to make.

The best performance was Mausam Escape hands down. Next come Jai Ho and
Chandralikha. and oddly enough I liked Ringa Ringa too.
Didn't like how they performed some songs without any lead singers, like
  Chaiya Chaiya, Barso Re etc.
Boss was off-tune overall. Rashid Ali killed pronunciations and ate words
  out as always.
Really like the idea of displaying artists' name on grand screen.
Chandralikha performance was wonderful and appreciated the MJ part of it.
Can only hope sometime they perform Jai Ho in its full glory i.e., with
  Sukhwinder.

Concert Review
Jai Ho, Rahman
Oman had never seen anything like the Jai Ho concert before as over 15,000
people packed the Royal Oman Police Stadium on Thursday night to watch Oscar
winner A.R. Rahman perform with a troupe of 90 artists.
Drummer par excellence Shiv Mani set the tone for the three-hour show that
started on time at 8pm and ended on the stroke of 11pm.
The concert proved that shows of this scale can be held in Muscat and audiences
would pay to watch. Massive LED screens made a perfect backdrop as everything
worked to precision. Hundreds of lights dazzled the wide stage as the sound
quality and 3D projection provided a life-like effect throughout the show.
Rahman was, as usual, most unassuming on stage, but unleashed his vast
repertoire of songs and demonstrated his ability to handle different
instruments, including an unplugged session on a giant pedal piano with
Hariharan, Sadhna Sargam, Rashid Ali and Javed Ali.
Rahman let his music take centre stage and did not indulge in costume changes,
a la Bollywood shows, but made sure to wear the Omani mussar (headgear) when he
got lost singing sufi songs.
If there was a sombre sufi session by Rahman on harmonium while sitting on the
floor, then there were peppy hip-hop, pop, reggae, heavy metal, rap and ballads
to satiate the eclectic audience.
The audience jumped, danced and whistled with joy throughout the concert and
went away with moist eyes as Rahman called it a day with the emotional
rendition of the Indian national song Vande Mataram.

Jai ho! Rahman holds his Slumdog Millionare Oscars (Best Score and Best
Original Song) at a post-award party in Los Angeles this February. Mario
Anzuoni / Reuters
In less than 20 years, AR Rahman has come to dominate Indian popular music by
breaking all of its borders. S Subramanian reads a new biography of Bollywood’s
great assimilator.

AR Rahman: The Musical Storm
Kamini Mathai
Penguin India
Dh38

The Indian composer AR Rahman, recent winner of a pair of Academy Awards for
his jaunty songs in Slumdog Millionaire, has over the years demonstrated a keen
talent for reaching new, rapidly appreciative audiences. This talent is
typically discussed in reference to his work outside India, which began early
this century when he collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the saccharine
West End confection Bombay Dreams, pairing reworked versions of some of his
most outstanding songs from the 1990s with some of his worst original music.
Since then, his work has featured on Broadway and in Chinese and Hollywood
films. All this, particularly the Slumdog Oscars, has made Rahman the first
Indian composer to find substantial audiences beyond the already large world of
his country’s film industry.

But Rahman’s first, more impressive feat of border-crossing occurred much
earlier, when he became the first Indian composer with a pan-Indian audience.
So often is Bollywood used as a symbol of the entire Indian film industry that
it is easy to overlook the country’s diversity of other regional cinema.
Outside Mumbai, other sizeable film industries operate like self-contained
planets, producing movies in the languages of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam
and Bengali. The borders between the four south Indian cinemas are, for actors,
directors and composers, particularly fluid; the border between south Indian
cinema and Hindi cinema has, because of deeper linguistic differences,
traditionally been far less permeable.

Even music, that much-vaunted universal language, sat for long in decidedly
regional compartments. The music of the Bollywood and Tamil film industries may
have shared roots in the Indian seven-note scale, for instance, but they long
ago developed into entirely different sensibilities. In their default modes,
they leaned in different directions: Bollywood toward plaintive romantic or
existential ballads; Tamil music toward raga-based classical or rhythm-heavy
indigenous folk. They used different instruments: the harmonium would have
sounded as odd in Tamil music as the veena in Bollywood. The gulf separating
these genres was a wide one, spanned only by the occasional work of the
occasional composer. Perhaps work on the bridge that now connects them had
tentatively begun in the years before Rahman, but only after he brought power
cranes to the job, completed its construction, and made a few sorties back and
forth did other composers feel consistently
 comfortable doing the same.

Rahman’s debut soundtrack, Roja, released in 1992, provides a classic example
of how his music functions. A song will start simply, with a spare melody and
vocals with power but no apparent ambition to blow the listener away. Within
seconds, that all changes. The melody might enter a dense burst of
orchestration, or yield to a solo by an unexpected instrument, or somehow
reveal itself to be based on a highly classical raga. The vocals might shift
colour, from modest to epic, or from normal singing to Rahman’s own
free-spirited yodels, or from pristine enunciation to humming. The rhythm can
come out of wood blocks, or steel drums, or something that sounds distinctly
like a brass pot being hit with a bunched fist. Mixed together, this reminds
you of reggae one minute, Tamil folk the next, then electronica, then south
Indian classical – all together in one alluring whole.

Nearly 20 years after that debut, Rahman’s music still sparks interesting
(albeit well-worn) debates among music-lovers. What exactly is Rahman’s genius?
Does it lie in his arrangements, his meticulous layering of sounds and voices
as if they were sheets of phyllo? Or in his generous accommodation of styles,
or in his industrious production of catchy hooks? In other words: is he
“simply” a technically savvy producer of commercial music? Or do arrangement,
stylistic flexibility and hook-production fall legitimately under the rubric of
musical artistry, and is Rahman exactly what his legions of devoted fans say he
is: a straight-up compositional genius?

I knew someone like you was going to pounce. Where in my post does it say that
I'm worked up? Did you read what I said carefully? I explicitly said that I'm
not pre-judging the album, but just keeping my expectations low because the
genre of music that the movie requires is not something that I get too excited
about. I also said that I would listen to the music with an open mind when it
comes out and hope that he can compose a song or two that's more in my line of
preference. I also mentioned that Rahman likes to surprise too. I absolutely
encourage Rahman to be experimental and I hope that this experiment works!

People.. ..please. .

mood and content of the moviemostly hip hop, fast, dance, techno kind
of songs. It's Rahman's music, so it will be interesting to say the least,
but that type of music is not my cup of tea usually. Again, these are just
thoughts and I'm in no way judging the album prematurely. Once it releases,
I will listen with an open mind and hopefully be surprised here and there.
I'm hopeful there will be at least one soulful/slow number with the

Hello there my dear fren. Its really nice to see you share ur view as well. But
calling people stupid for what they truly enjoy and love is just pure ignorant.
What was experienced by Dinesh V. is truly amazing. Its not everyday we get to
see things like that happen. And it was not wrong for him to share it here. If
he dun share it here, where else would he? We are living here as a family.
Whether its a positive feedback or negative, we all will work it out. Its been
like that for a very long time. All i would like to request to u is that next
time perhaps u can use a more polite language towards the members there. Thank
you.

 Hi All Rahmaniacs,

I read this mail saying - The security gaurd saw A R Rahman's photo in the
car, and he told your car doesn't needs to under go security check as you are
 Rahman's fan

Don't you guys think this is too much.. Its good to be ARR's fan, but keep it
at that level. Being a Rahman fan doesn't fill our belly!!

Music is for us to have a good time at our leisure, so keep it at that level.

I accept that A R Rahman is a genius when it comes to music and ask him, he
would definitely attribute that to his hardwork, intelligently making moves,
applying to right academies to appreciate his music - like Academy Awards,
and associating with best in the industry so that all of them benifit by that.

So, all that is his strategy, which we too should learn and apply in our
 respective fields.

There is no reason for us to go on mentioning in every mail that I am a Die
hard Rahmaniac. Just say I like his music.

Instead of saying You know what? Today I was very lucky, I saw HIM at the
 airport
You know, the security guard said you are Rahman fan so you can go without
 security check
kind of things are very stupid.

I am sure that even A R Rahman would not expect these things from us fans.

If you ask him personally, he would say what stupidity his fans do.

Thats what he told in a Sugar-Coated way during Felicitation of ARR by
 Chennai Music Directors Association that
Don't abuse anyone's music, every music director has his own way of doing
 things
Same way he would also say about the stupidity happening here

 Finally,

I TOO AM A DIE HARD FAN OF A R RAHMAN. I RESPECT HIM FOR HIS TALENT.

 But guys, dont act stupidly!!

 Discuss about his compositions,
 * discuss what you liked in it,
 * let the other person also remind you of other composition that you might
 have forgotten,
 * try to enjoy the nuances of his music,
 * focus on lyrics,
 * musical instruments used,
 * the way he switches from one Raga to other,
 * get more technical,
 * teach other who don't know the basics of music like Ragas,
 * discuss those things,
 * share your renditions,
 * let others give their feedback
  - These kind of healthy discussions shud be there. Not saying I saw him
 here, there, kind of things.

Vithur and other co-ordinators please understand my point and explain it to
 other Rahmaniacs.

One final thing, by just talking about the genius of A R Rahman, nothing good
is going to happen to us.

We will just keep seing how high Rahman goes each day.. He has shaped his
life very well. He is planning for what he wants and he is achieving that.
But what about us? When will we be like that

So just admire his talent, aspire to be someone like him, or if music is not
your cup of tea, use that inspiration to become better in you field.

Just use his acheivements as your motivation and ofcourse his music will be
on you side to support you (morally).

IF WE DO THIS, NO ONE WILL BE MORE HAPPIER THAN A R RAHMAN HIMSELF, because
he will he happy for he inspired many for their own development and progress.

And A R Rahman, if you are reading this mail - do something about this
stupidity - just let them know not to be so stupid.

 Thanks,
 Ranjit

the promos for this salaam bombay dreams DVD was shared in this group couple of
weeks before and it really impressed me. i cant restrict but to get the DVD
from an online store and the money i've spent for it is definitely worth it. i
just completely watching the entire DVD. it has four sections: the making,
creative team interviews, sights and sounds and bonus material.

really, this DVD is a must have for any rahmaniac. the audaciousness of the
musical and the approach the team took to present this musical in a magnanimous
scale is simply mindblowing. they call it A R Rahman's Bombay dreams and Andrew
has been pivotal role in promoting ARR to the western audience as the score
that ARR has given for BD deserves it. shekhar kapoor's tid-bits in the DVD
compilation adds nice edge to this DVD. ARRs interview and songs recordings are
a treat to watch and cherish. the way the song sequences are choreographed and
shot are shown with abundant passion. the highest point is that when ARR is
congratulated the Queen. really awesome.

kudos ARR... a great, memorable chapter in ur life that every musical lover
would cherish.

Rawat, lets understand one simple thing first:
Music and its taste is very highly subjective.
Its not something that everyone can objectively define as to what is good or
bad.
can anyone measure likability of music like blood pressure !!
I can't understand why you fail to recognise this fact, instead of using terms
like 'blind-faith' !!

I am a known JA basher so I thought I can say about this song also.

khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its
religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high
weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and
then AG using it in the film.

But as a song, I find khwaja song quite barren and monotonous if I can
say that. It is a sort of introvert song giving a feel that a person
must be singing it within his heart and mind. It is his personal
pleasure. Others would not be able to connect to it.

Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to
say and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that. It is more
like the sounds generated when a player tunes up his instruments
before starting to really play it up. Such a long wasted part is a sin
in current busy time. Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are
without any lyrical or music value. So, I think the start itself is
 badly thought up.

But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics. A
typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up
lyrics as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar.

 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Dil Mein Sama ja
 Bebaso ki Taqdeer
 Tu ne hai sawari

There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type
of phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s
and here he comes up with that in a 21st century devotional song.

I would say that the major failure of the song remains in the poor
lyrics. Then, it fails in arrangements of vocals. None of the voices
carry and ethos and pathos. They are just singing an any song, not a
religious song for the most respected muslim personality of Indian
subcontinent. pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer
tu ne hai sanwari, has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one
has to strain to hear it and make the meaning of it. Sad that it is our
 man himself.

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor
pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and
then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be
repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line
unceremoniously and begin another line - sar jhukaate hain auliya.
What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what,
is that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have
come from within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him.

If all goes right for A R Rahman and Resul Pokutty, they might end up lifting a
13.5-inch and 8.5 pound knight holding a crusader's sword and standing on a
reel of film on Academy night.

The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8.5 pounds.
The film reel features five spokes, signifying the five original branches of
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: actors, directors, producers,
technicians and writers.

Although the statuette remains true to its original design, the size of the
base varied until 1945, when the current standard was adopted.

Since the initial awards banquet on May 16, 1929, in the Hollywood Roosevelt
Hotel's Blossom Room, 2,701 statuettes have been presented.

Every year in January, additional new golden statuettes are cast, moulded,
polished and buffed by R S Owens Company, the Chicago-based awards
manufacturer retained by the Academy since 1982.

MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on a
reel of film gripping a crusader's sword. The Academy tapped Los Angeles
sculptor George Stanley to realize the design in three dimensions  and the
world-renowned statuette was born.

Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by
its nickname, Oscar.

According to the Academy, the statuettes presented at the initial ceremonies
were gold-plated solid bronze. Within a few years the bronze was abandoned in
favour of Britannia metal, a pewter-like alloy which is then plated in copper,
nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold.

Due to a metal shortage during World War II, Oscars were made of painted
plaster for three years. Following the war, the Academy invited recipients to
redeem the plaster figures for gold-plated metal ones.

Achievements in up to 25 regular categories will be honoured on February 22 at
the 81st Academy Awards presentation at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and
Highland Center.

However, the Academy won't know how many statuettes it will hand out until the
envelopes are opened on Oscar Night.

Although the number of categories and special awards are known in advance, the
possibility of ties and of multiple recipients sharing the prize in some
categories makes it impossible to predict the exact number of statuettes to be
awarded.

As in previous years, any surplus awards will be housed in the Academy's vault
until next year's event.

Source -
http://www.thehindu businessline. com/2009/ 02/24/stories/ 2009022451020500 .htm

New Delhi, Feb. 23

Will A.R. Rahman be required to pay Customs duty on his Oscar
statuettes? No one knows yet. The statuettes are not solid gold, but
gold-plated. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) thinks the
two statuettes may be worth about $1,000. Rahman will be returning
with two in his hand baggage.

For passengers (above 10 years of age), who return after a stay abroad
of more than three days, the Customs baggage rules allow duty-free
clearance for articles up to Rs 25,000. This, however, does not cover
gold or silver, in any form other than ornaments.

Earlier in the day, at a Revenue Department function for laying the
foundation stone for Rajaswa Bhawan, the Union Home Minister, Mr P.
Chidambaram, suggested tax exemption on cash awards that may come with
the Oscars bagged by Rahman.

If the Oscars carry a cash award, I would recommend to the Finance
Minister that it should be exempt from taxation, Mr Chidambaram had said.

There is a precedent for taxing such trophies. In 2002, Sachin
Tendulkar, after he scored 29 centuries to equal Sir Donald Bradman's
record, was gifted a Ferrari by its makers. The then finance minister
said the government was waiving the Customs duty of Rs 1.13 crore on it.

But the rules said that waivers were not allowed on gifts, only on
prizes. In 2003, the Finance Bill of 2003 was amended and Sachin
brought in the Ferrari without payment of the Customs duty. This led
to a public interest litigation and Sachin offered to pay. Eventually,
Ferrari paid the duty.

Fascinating film fraternity - Indian tinsel town is singing praises of A R
Rahman, who has got a nod for the Oscars. And the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'
with world-class music, an Indian cast and based on an Indian theme, doing
exceptionally well in the international circuit, it's time more Indian films to
get the recognition they deserve. We are way ahead of Hollywood in the numbers
game, with more that 800 movies being churned out each year in India.

For hindi ones, i would recommend www.induna.com. They also have a

They deliver thru DHL express. Very good response by mail and phone

Hi Rahmanics,

Long wait for the album just couldn’t pay off. Ghajini has been one of the
average albums of A.R.Rahman so far though the album is completely different
from the original one but Rahman just couldn’t manage to outdo Harris Jeyraj's
Ghajini. Rahman had been very impressive in Jodhaa Akbar, the music was a
class. ADA and JTYJN too were typical Rahman albums. Last month's Yuvvraaj was
also good but definitely not one of his finest work. Even CD sales didn’t look
encouraging for Yuvvraaj but overall it was very good stuff. But what can I say
for Ghajini, I think Rahman was not in mood of composing this album. Rahman
should have been very careful in handling this project because the kind of
music which Harris Jeyraj had delivered in Tamil version was one of the
greatest works in terms of music in Indian Cinema. You just can’t compare that
with the recently released Hindi Ghajini. Very interesting to see Joginder
Tuteja giving very high rating for this
album instead he should have given it for Jodhaa Akbar, 4/5 for Ghajini is too
much. I think he tried to play safe this time.
I got the copy yesterday and listened to it atleast 8 times but
still I didn’t find any songs better except Behka and Guzarish (not as good as
Suthum Vizhium though). Behka is uniquely refreshing number by Rahman with
great vocal rendering by Karthik. Karthik rocks in Behka. About the Rest it
will take very long time to grow on you.

1. Guzarish – Good one but not the best, Javed Ali's voice is ok-ok. (3/5)
2. Aye Bachchu - No comments, X-micchi Y-micchi was better. (2/5)
3. Kaise Mujhe – Dissappointing. (2/5)
4. Behka - Only song I liked, Rahman managed to compose this song well. (4/5)
5. Latoo - Oh my god what was Rahman trying to do in this song. Rahmanji please
don’t try to experiment too much. (2.75/5)
6. Kaise Mujhe (instrumental) is not as good as previous Rahman’s instrumental
tracks. (2.5/5)

Album Rating:  2.5/5 . Top songs: Behka, Guzarish. Keeping finger crossed for
BGMs.

Rahman gave 3 hit albums this year, Jodhaa Akbar, JTYJN and Sakkarakatti.
Yuvvraaj was good album but couldn’t create magic as Taal in terms of audio
sales. ADA ’s sales were very bad too. Ghajini, I don’t know but by the way
Rahman had delivered music it too might fall down badly. It all depends on how
the songs have been shot and whether the songs are fitting to the situation and
most important thing of all will “Aamir Khan” factor help boost the album
sales. Rahman had been consistently impressive with the following directors:
1. Maniratnam
2. Shankar
3. Ashutosh Gowariker
Leaving the above 3 directors Rahman had given very few good albums.
Among the 6 albums of A.R.Rahman released this year (Jodhaa Akbar, ADA , JTYJN,
Sakkarakatti, Yuvvraaj, Ghajini) Jodhaa Akbar is the best. Yuvvraaj and JTYJN
were also good.
Finally Rahman who started year with rich music concludes very badly. I would
better listen to all his earlier albums all over again instead of listening
Ghajini’s music.

Note: This was my personal feeling I always liked ARR's album but Ghajini's
music somehow didn't convince me.

Regards,
Aditya

Dear all,
Let me introduce myself 1st. I am Kanchna Subramaniam from Malaysia,, a
diehard fan of AR sir.
Last month, I got to know that AR Sirs posters were available with chakarakatti
cds in Chennai. I was very sad because it was not available in Malaysia. I
really wish to have the poster.  But I didn’t get any poster when I bought
chakarakatti cd..
On 15th August, I went to the cd shop to buy some movies.  Actually I am a
regular customer of that shop. When I enter the shop. I saw AR sirs poster was
hanging.. I was s excited.  I asked the shop owner which I know
very well, whether he is having extra posters or not? Unexpectedly, the uncle
gave me  THREE posters, since he knows my affections toward AR sir  I was
soo happy and excited…. No words to express my feeling that moment.
Thanks to uncle although the posters are without AR sirs signature. Thanks to
God and my Guru, I know that I can’t have the posters without HIS grace…and AR
sir and Lotus five star for distributing the Cds and posters in Malaysia.
Recently, I did a T shirt with AR sir picture. And for me it is the best AR
t-shirt than the other AR t-shirts that I’m having.
i uploaded the fully wrapped poster and the t-shirt, for  Rahmaniacs have a
look on it…..thank you…. Hail AR Saab….

On Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 8:56 AM, Vithur [EMAIL PROTECTED] com wrote:

Living in London, did you get to estimate how much of a rage Kabhi Kabhi Aditi
from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na would turn out to be?
Although I'm based in London, I travel a lot to India and have many contacts
there. And in today's time of Internet boom, topographical difference can
hardly be a dampener. Besides, there are many satellite Asian channels, which
play Bollywood music. And Aditi is not the only song that I had sung in the
film, there's also Kahin to. Earlier too, I had sung a number, Ishq Ada Hai in
the film, Ada. So, it's not that I'm clueless about how my songs are doing. I
also made it a point to catch the flick.

What was the response to your first playback, Ishq Ada Hai?
Ishq Ada Hai was recorded seven years back as AR was looking for a singer who
could sing in a
totally different style. In addition, AR essentially wanted an acoustic and
organic feel to the song. He asked me to play some guitar and I started
experimenting with what became the intro. He wanted an intense effect to the
voice and suggested that style. I was glad that song was chosen for the promo
of the film and found its way to the top five in many charts. I'm pleased that
both this song and Kabhi Kabhi Aditi were the first songs on each of the
respective albums.

Was a career in music a natural choice, since your mother carved a niché for
herself in the world of classical music?
My mother was a ghazal singer but she would regularly perform lighter music.
She successfully recorded some albums in UK, one of which featured Ustad Ghulam
Mustafa's compositions. As far as I'm concerned, I broadened my outlook in
music having adapted to many genres in Western, Asian and World music.
Thankfully, I've also gained a lot of experience in studio work as well as by
performing live with many musicians — playing Jazz gigs to Arabic music. Having
recognized my ethnicity, I also listened to many Indian artistes whilst growing
up.

You had worked with Rahman on the Bombay Dreams project and had been part of
the troupe for a while as a guitarist, before this big break. How did the two
of you come together?
I met AR at a concert in UK, seven years ago. The initial conversation was
completely about my mother, Farida Ali's connection with Ustad Ghulam Mustafa
Khan, since he had worked on her ghazal album in UK and also about my love for
Jazz music.

You started off as a guitarist and then emerged as a singer...
From the beginning, AR knew I was also a singer. It just took time for tracks
like Ishq Ada Hai to surface. India is looking for new sounds and styles — now
is a good time to be in Bollywood.

When you chatted Rahman up, were you aware of his iconic status?
At that point of time, I did not know too much about AR's projects, other than
the fact that he had given music for Bombay, Rangeela and Taal.

You are 42 and yet sound like a 20-something in Aditi. Has age got nothing to
do with how one sounds?
Talent is not age-dependent. I do naturally have a young voice, since I do look
after my voice and myself.

Having given a smash hit, would you now like to pursue Bollywood seriously?
Since I am a singer, I feel that I would like to pursue any projects, which
will highlight my abilities. Bollywood is an important part in the spectrum of
entertainment. Besides this, I hope to further showcase myself as a guitarist
and composer.

What's keeping you busy at the moment?
Right now, I am working on my own album which will be produced by AR Rahman's
own music label. I am the first one to be signed on by him. I want India to
discover not just Rashid Ali's voice but also what his own music and guitar
playing is about. There's no denying one thing — Rashid Ali is here to stay.

SG ( Subhash Ghai ) :-  I was never assistant to any Director. Right from my
childhood, I used to write plays, direct them, in my college and University

and Pune.

Q: You produce movies, You direct and produce movies, and you direct movies.
Which among the three do you consider you are best at ?

SG :- I write, I direct and I produce. Three Jobs I have to do. There are three

and my mom was more philsophical and spiritual person.

Q :- Were you the only son or you had siblings ?

SG :- No. I had two brothers and one sister.

Q :- So, When did you meet RAHMAN ?

SG :- It was a long back story. It was 1993. I remember , Rahman's Roja Film
music was released. Few people were talking in Bombay. New boy coming out with
a genius quality in him, compared to other Music Director. So, I was coming
from Mysore to Bangalore. At that time, in the car, the driver was playing
songs of Roja. The songs were being played, and I asked him whose film it is ?.
He says that it is A.R. Rahman from Madras. I said, ya ya. I have heard his
name. So, I kept hearing those songs. So, it was two to three hours journey.
So, I heard two three times. I could see a lot of talent, innovative quality
because I have been trained under Laxmikanth Pyaralal for 20 years, and I had
music sense from my childhood. So I had developed an ear for music. I talked to
him; I love your music and am planning a film. I would like to have your
services as Music Composer. So, he was quite excited and he said, Even I love
your Film Hero, and I used to play
Hero's tunes, while I was a keyboard player. So, immediately, we clicked with
each other. It was a very mutual admiration for each other, and when I met him,
I could see his clean and Divine qualities in this man.

I remember when he said, Lets do a good job. I talked to him about money.
How much money I should pay?. He says, Lets do a good music. We shall talk
about it later. So I understood his character, and that he is more passionate
about his work. And i started blending with him, and we started to work on a
film called SHIKHAR, which finally couldnt place. But then , it happened in
TAAL.

I would say, that I was the first from the Hindi Film Industry who noticed him
from the Bombay Industry and who came to work with him, and everyone in Bombay
Industry was surprised to see me coming down and working with a South Indian
Music Director. There were frowns and questions in Bombay, as to how a Music
Director from South India, could make music for a Hindi Film, and find a place
in Hindi Industry.

In Hindi Music, there is always a Northern Music which is dominating. So, they
were wondering, How I am going to justify ?. So, I told him, Dont worry. YOu
know the Indian Classical and Western Music well. And he really proved , while
recording two songs . Ishq Bina Jeena Kya was recorded first, which I later
on recorded in Taal. This song initially did not belong to Taal. It was
recorded for Shikhar. So, I could see the new kind of vibrations and growth in
me, treating myself.

So what's the running time of the most-awaited film of the year -- JODHAA
AKBAR? While UTV and Ashutosh Gowariker have been keeping quiet about its final
length, this writer has learnt of some facts pertaining to its running time.

The rough cut of JODHAA AKBAR was of almost 4 hours' duration, which was
brought down to 3.20 hours. However, the film may be trimmed further, thereby
making the final length anywhere between 3 and 3.20 hours. Since the film is of
epic proportions, it wouldn't be possible to bring down its length below 3
hours, which means that the historical will be of 3 + hours for sure.

Await the official statement from Gowariker and UTV.

[arr] 'qawwali' dropped from JODHAA AKBAR

Rahman's 'qawwali' dropped from JODHAA AKBAR

Movie Poster
It may come as a shock to many that a spectacular 'qawwali' by the maestro, A
R Rahman, has been dropped from Ashutosh Gowariker and UTV's republic week
release, JODHAA AKBAR.

The traditional 'qawwali', from the movie that features the 'Indian Greek God',
Hrithik Roshan and timeless beauty Aishwarya (Rai) Bachchan, had been
extravagantly picturised, a while back. The music director of the magnum opus,
A R Rahman, informs that it was a mutually agreed decision, as there was no
situational demand.

Rahman also has interesting information regarding the above mentioned
'qawwali'. As per the composer, so impressed is Aishwarya Bachchan with the
composition that she wants to use it in her next project/movie.

Well, for now we can only wait and watch whether Ashutosh concedes to the
demand of the Bachchan 'bahu'!

A R Rahman is now going places. A busy composer in Tamil and Hindi, Rahman is
now scoring music for Shekar Kapoor's 'Elizabeth- the Golden Age', where he
pairs up with Hollywood actor Craig Armstrong, he is very excited.
'It has been really a wonderful experience working with Craig', says Rahman.
'We traveled a lot in places like Glasgow...remotely working with the guys in
London,' says Rahman.
Some of he ongoing projects of Rahman include Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodha Akbar
starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai and Subhash Ghai's Yuvaraj
Rahman's songs in Rajnikanth starrer Sivaji-The Boss was a blockbuster hit in
Kollywood. The film is being dubbed in Hindi and Rahman is eagerly awaiting to
see the response for Sivaji's songs in Hindi.
'After a long time, I have decided to dub my songs in Hindi. I had almost
stopped dubbing in Hindi but this time I am convinced that it will do well. The
music is ready and will be released soon,' he says.

[arr] Goldspots latest album

2007-09-22 Thread Shamil Sharif

Goldspot’s latest album, Tally of the Yes Men, even has a few songs in which
the string arrangements were composed by the AR Rahman’s Bollywood orchestra,
including the hit singles Rewind and Friday. Khosla, a one-time Ivy Leaguer and
wannabe-lawyer says that he wants the Indian influence to be “present without
being overbearing”.
